Is Tulum, Mexico a safe destination for travelers in 2024? Here’s everything you need to know about safety in the popular beach town.

You’ve probably seen photos of Tulum all over Instagram already. The fancy beach clubs, the trendy cafes, the gorgeous white-sand beaches lined with palm trees, and the jungle-chic hotels.

Tulum has been a major hotspot for years now, and it’s only expected to grow in popularity in 2024 with the opening of a new international airport and the Maya Train opening in February.

However, despite all the flash and glamour, there have also been safety concerns in Tulum. Here’s what you need to know about safety, from someone who has actually been to Tulum as a solo traveler.

Tulum Travel Advisory

Tulum is part of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, which currently has a Level 2 Travel Advisory from the U.S. Department of State.

This means travelers should “exercise increased caution” while traveling due to a higher level of crime. In Tulum, the increase in crime can mainly be attributed to organized crime and drug-related crime. However, some of it is also petty crime directly affecting tourists.

Don’t Be Too Flashy

One of the easiest things you can do to avoid getting robbed in Tulum is to avoid being super flashy.

Tulum tends to attract some “show off” travelers thanks to its high-end resorts and pricy restaurants and clubs, but it’s important to remember that you aren’t in St. Barts or Monaco.

Tourists have been warned to avoid wearing expensive items in Tulum, so maybe leave the Rolexes and $2,000 designer handbags at home if that applies to you.

Don’t Keep Your Phone Out

Phones are one of the most common things to get stolen by opportunistic thieves.

You can make it harder for them by not leaving your phone out, just waiting to get snatched.

Don’t leave your phone sitting out on the table while you’re at a restaurant or on your towel at the beach. It’s a really simple thing, but you’d be shocked by how many people don’t do it.

Always Stay Alert

Pay attention to your surroundings and stay alert while in Tulum. This includes maintaining an awareness of your belongings (phone, wallet, keys, etc.) and the people around you.

Tulum is not a destination where you have to be super “on guard” or edgy about your surroundings at all times, but it’s still a smart idea to stay alert and aware to avoid issues.

Don’t Walk Around Alone At Night

Honestly, as a solo female traveler who has traveled alone to almost every single country in Latin America, I felt very safe walking around Tulum, even after dark.

That being said, it’s a good idea to avoid walking around alone late at night. This goes for everyone, male and female travelers, and it’s good advice to follow anywhere in the world.

Only Use Bank ATMs

Some ATMs in Tulum are located out on the street and not affiliated with a bank. Avoid using these to take out money because they’re a bigger target for card skimmers and thieves.

Instead, find a bank ATM to withdraw money from. Some of these are located inside the bank and others are still located outside, but they are overall safer and more secure to use.

Know Some Spanish

This is not nearly as important as it is in other Latin American destinations because Tulum is extremely touristy and Americanized, so most people can speak English, but nonetheless, it’s a good idea to know some Spanish before traveling to Tulum.

While not strictly necessary in Tulum, speaking Spanish can help you understand more and have a more comfortable travel experience, and it makes you less of a target.

Europe is every digital nomad’s favorite playground: nowhere in the world will they find that country-hopping is as hassle-free as in the Old Continent, where borders are essentially a non-existing concept, and the wide availability of trains and low-cost flights make it incredibly easy to travel.

The only downside to Europe, however, is how expensive it can be, particularly if you’re a budget-conscious nomad who’s looking to settle temporarily somewhere affordable and cool enough: though they may be inherently fascinating, many European countries are becoming unliveable.

Be it soaring rates of overtourism, the strength of the euro against the dollar, or the surging inflation, which is giving locals themselves plenty of reasons to complain, options keep dwindling, so where exactly can remote workers relocate that will not break the bank?

Here are our top five picks for European spots where it costs less than $2,000 per month to live:

Rijeka, Croatia

The third-largest urban center in Croatia, Rijeka is a surprisingly multicultural city and seaport famous for its diverse demographic and numerous cultural attractions.

Rooted in both the Croatian and Italian worlds, it is a melting pot of neighboring cultures.

Due to its proximity to Italy, more specifically Venice, which sits just across the Adriatic inlet, the city has its own unique dialect of the endangered Venetian language (Fiumian), spoken mainly among ethnic Italians living locally, as well as Chakavian, a regional dialect of Croatian.

Among the most famous landmarks, the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc stands out, an 18th-century effort by renowned Austrian architects Fellner & Hellner and a Venetian-inspired Old Town dominated by the medieval Church of the Assumption.

For digital nomads, Rijeka is one of the top destinations in Croatia, as it costs only $1,677 per month to live and work remotely there, as per data gathered by Nomad List, not to mention the good air quality, proximity to the seaside, and internet speed (22 mbps on average).

Gran Canaria, Spain

The main island in Spain’s autonomous Canaries archipelago, Gran Canaria is a tried-and-true winter sun hotspot, offering warm temperatures year-round, white sand beaches, nature reserves, and vibrant city breaks, most notably Las Palmas.

On the digital nomad side, it’s risen to prominence as a result of its high quality of life, easy access to nature, relaxed atmosphere, and most importantly, the lower cost of living compared to other destinations in mainland Spain.

It would naturally depend on where you are based, as prices can be higher in Las Palmas, the regional capital, than the rural, mountainous inland, but it costs on average a mere $1,974 to reside in Gran Canaria monthly.

Some of the aspects nomads love the most about Gran Canaria are the sunny, temperate climate, owing it to the geographical proximity to the African continent, the fact that English is widely spoken, especially among young people in larger cities, and the cheaper prices for food.

Antalya, Turkiye

Dubbed the Queen of the Eastern Mediterranean, Antalya is a gorgeous resort city in Turkiye with millennia upon millennia of accumulated History and a unique mixture of Old World charm and modern seaside developments to call its own.

The Old Town part, locally known as Kaleici, is a maze-like cobbled zone lined by traditional shops and restaurants, guarded by a 2,000-year-old Roman city gate, and it’s easily Antalya’s most picturesque and culturally significant district.

In Konyaalti, however, the ancient cityscape gives way to clusters of skyscrapers and residential buildings distributed along a sand-and-gravel beach strip, bounded by waters of the shiniest blue, within walking distance of Westernized eateries and leisure and shopping complexes.

Antalya is old and historical, but it is also cool and trendy, and its low cost of living – Nomad List estimates it is possible to reside here on $1,235 per month – make it a highly sought-after destination for remote workers from both Europe and the U.S.

Now that Turkiye has lifted visa requirements for Americans, Antalya has become even more attractive to the average U.S. visitor.

Split, Croatia

The second Croatian entry on this list, Split is a unique city in the sense that it originally developed around the abandoned ruins of a Roman palace built for an emperor. This means much of the so-called Old Town is still found within the remaining walls of this ancient structure.

It is made up of a series of winding alleys leading to hidden patios and family-owned bakeries, yet outside the Diocletian fortress, visitors will find a palm-flanked marina interspersed with luxurious hotels, nightclubs, and charming oceanfront cafes.

Much like Antalya in Turkiye, Split has stolen our hearts with its combination of European ‘old’ and 21st-century coastal getaway: seeing centuries-old monuments coexisting harmoniously with — is no strange sight here.

Then, there is Split’s affordability: based on 726 impressions by members of Nomad List‘s online community, nomads can expect to pay around $1,998 per month living among locals in Croatia’s second city.

And it seems that American travelers just love visiting the U.K. – a recent report showed that American tourists are one of the most important to the country, with a 28% increase in spending for 2023 compared to 2019.

So, where are the best destinations in the U.K.? And why? Here’s what’s happening in 2024 at some of the country’s most iconic places that might help sway you.

London

A trip to Britain is not complete without visiting London – it’s the third most visited city in the world for a reason.

Of course, there are many timeless reasons why you might enjoy the city, such as iconic landmarks like Big Ben and Buckingham Palace and popular annual events like the Chelsea Flower Show or Notting Hill Carnival.

You will be able to experience the country’s biggest free celebrations of African music and culture, Africa Oye, when it takes place in Liverpool in the summer.

2024 will also be a big year for Liverpool’s most famous sons, the Beatles.

In July it will be the 60^th anniversary of the release of their album A Hard Day’s Night.

This means that the already amazing Liverpool Beatles Museum will have a host of additional artifacts and treasures as part of a celebratory temporary exhibition this summer.

Brighton

Brighton is one of the U.K.’s most popular coastal cities and combines the delights of a traditional, historic seaside town with a trendy vibe that has evolved thanks to many young people from London moving here.

The city is easy to access, being only a 30-minute train ride from London Gatwick Airport, and with more flights from the U.S. expected to connect to here in 2024.

Brighton is home to the biggest pride celebration in the country, which takes place in early August in 2024.

Another reason to visit in 2024 is that England’s National Gallery will be loaning some of its finest artworks from artists such as Rembrandt and Renoir to other museums around the country to celebrate its 200^th anniversary, and one of the beneficiaries will be Brighton Museum and Art Gallery.

Birmingham

The U.K.’s second-largest city has recently hosted major events such as the Commonwealth Games in 2022, so a lot of money has been spent on improving the city center and transport links.

You can enjoy luxury shopping at the Bull Ring, great dining and nightlife at the Mailbox, or end-of-year festivities at the famous Frankfurt Christmas Market.

Skye

Colombia has long held an iffy reputation for travelers. On one hand, it’s an amazing destination to visit.

On the other hand, many travelers have claimed they feel the need to keep their head on a swivel in certain areas.

Some of the more popular cities to visit are Medellin, Bogota and Cartagena to name a select few. The U.S. Embassy just issued a nationwide security alert this morning for all travelers in Colombia.

While the U.S. Embassy surely has intel we don’t possess, travelers can dive into our in-depth report regarding the safety aspect of Medellin here.

New Security Alert

Tragically, it has been reported from November 1 – December 31, 2023 8 U.S. tourists lost their lives by being duped by criminals.

There are a variety of ways tourists are targeted in Colombia. So much so, there is a common saying in Colombia that tourists should know.

‘No Dar Papaya’ translates to ‘don’t give papaya’. Essentially, do your best to not stand out and make yourself a target.

Keep valuables out of plain sight while going about your day, and stick to tourist-friendly neighborhoods.

Advice from the U.S. Embassy:
- Never physically resist a robbery attempt – your life is always more valuable than possessions
- Trust your intuition – if something feels off, stick to your gut
- Tell someone you trust of your plans when going out
A Fatal Scam

Colombia is no stranger to crime and the U.S. Embassy is most certainly aware. So why the sudden change in tone?

It’s quite alarming to lose 8 lives in such a short span. Medellin, in particular, has become a hotspot for U.S. tourists for its affordable costs and year-round splendid weather, among other digital nomad perks.

The world is a beautiful place, but there are bad apples everywhere. The same goes for Medellin as well as the rest of the country.

With digital nomadism and solo travel being so popular, the road can get lonely at times. With our phones glued to our hips, the easy thing to do is get on dating apps, as they are now universal.

It’s no longer a societal taboo to meet up with strangers, or even ride with them, but perhaps the latest scam will raise red flags again.

The U.S. Embassy in Bogota is sounding the alarm on dating apps in Colombia as U.S. travelers are being duped far worse than your typical ‘catfish’.

Lured in to meeting in a public place as most dates go, as the night goes on, victims were lead away from public view and assaulted, drugged, robbed and even killed in some instances.

Not all 8 reported deaths have been attributed to dating apps, but “several” have been linked.

How To Remain Vigilant Dating In Colombia

Other than keeping a heightened sense of awareness, the Embassy notes you should be one step ahead if you sense you’re on a date from hell.

Staying in public view is key as violent crimes typically take place in isolation, such as residences and hotel rooms.

When possible, inform the concierge of your hotel or residence of a visitor and ask them to obtain valid identification beforehand if you have a new visitor.

Sedatives have been used, so it’s important to keep an eye on what you’re drinking and keep your phone within reach, as electronics are a commonly stolen item.

Uptick In Crime

According to the Tourism Observatory of the District Personnel of Medellin, crime against foreigners increased 200 percent toward the end of 2023 when compared to 2022 data.

With the latest alert, it appears these unfortunate trends are carrying over into 2024, with the dating app scam becoming the most prevalent tactic.

Here is the kicker – the U.S. Embassy admits crime often goes unreported due to victim embarrassment. While Medellin is the hotspot for crimes against tourists, with the Embassy’s knowledge of unreported crimes, they felt it was necessary to issue an alert for the whole country with Medellin, Bogota, and Cartagena being highlighted.

U.S. Issues New Emergency Travel Alert For This Popular Latin American Country

In a major turn of events, the United States has issued an emergency travel alert for Ecuador, an increasingly popular country that in recent years has become a trendy spot for nature-based getaways and cultural tourism in Latin America, thanks to its unspoiled nature and colonial heritage.

In case you haven’t been following the news in the last couple of days, peace in Ecuador has sadly been disappeared following numerous prison riots, which have led to a surge in crimes across the typically tranquil nation. Travelers will need to follow all government orders and adhere to the advice in the latest alert issued by the U.S. Embassy in Ecuador.

Now, U.S. citizens who are visiting soon, should they opt to go ahead with their travel plans, will be subject to strict new orders.

What Is Happening In Ecuador Right Now?

It all started when the Ecuadorian Government confirmed that, on January 7, Adolfo Macias, the leader of a powerful criminal organization who had been jailed on a 34-year sentence, had escaped prison on the day he was rumored to be transferred to a maximum-security facility.

There have been simultaneous criminal attacks across cities, jailbreaks, and even armed men storming into live TV studios.

As Guillhaume Long, the former Foreign Minister has stated, Ecuador may have had an issue with crime for years, having ended 2023 rated among the worse in Latin America, but following last weekend’s mayhem, the situation has ‘spiraled out of control’.

It didn’t end there:

In a coordinated attack on January 8, only a day later, prisoners in at least six other correctional facilities across Ecuador rebelled against authorities and seized power, with as many as 150 guards and staff taken hostage and 39 inmates breaking free of a prison in Riobamba alone.

The situation keeps deteriorating quickly, as by January 9, violence quickly spilled onto the streets, with at least five explosions in ‘several cities’.

Though there have been no injuries or casualties reported for those, the overall picture is rather grim, and what’s worse, fast-evolving.

Government officials have counted as many as 30 different attacks since Macias went missing last Sunday, but no exact links have yet been established, nor has the inmate been tracked down yet.

We understand it may be confusing, and there is a lot going on, but this is clear: due to drug trafficking and turf wars, violence in Ecuador has risen tremendously compared to previous years, and even recent weeks, and the state of unrest could be prolonged further.

What Has Been The Government’s Response?

Based on Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa’s statements, civil distress could worsen, as he will ‘not negotiate’ with the parties responsible for the latest episode.

Noboa elaborated by saying the violence is ‘a reaction’ to the Government’s proposal to build a high-security prison for jailed gang leaders, but that has not been fully established, either.

In response, on January 8 the President a nationwide State of Emergency, set to last 60 days.

Travelers In The Country Are Subject To A Nighttime Curfew

This includes a national curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. directly impacting nighttime services across tourist destinations like Quito, the capital and cultural heart, Cuenca, the colonial gem, Guayaquil, the gateway to the Pacific, and many more.

There is no way of knowing when, or where crime will happen, or when or how an armed conflict will erupt, but if we’re to trust the President’s statement, it most certainly will, as military action will take place, and anti-Government forces will react.

Taking this information into account, it’s no surprise the U.S. Embassy has now issued an emergency alert for Americans in, or who are planning on traveling to Ecuador.

What Is The U.S. Government Saying?

The U.S. Department of State acknowledges the seriousness of the situation, noting that schools in Ecuador will operate virtually through January 12, and even remote work is being recommended ‘wherever possible’.

So far, Ecuador is yet to be demoted from Level 2 to 3 in the Travel Advisory listing, meaning the U.S. still does not discourage Americans from traveling, but seeing that usually happens with some delay, and it’s almost a given the country will be hit with a ‘Reconsider Travel’ advice at some point down the line.

Unless, of course, order is suddenly reinstated. For now, that looks unlikely.

While the advisory isn’t updated, the alert warns Americans to keep up to date with official communications from the government of Ecuador pertaining to the State of Emergency, ‘monitor credible media sources’ for information on ‘threats and violent activity’, and review Washington’s own safety advice.

How Does This Affect Tourists?

Ecuador has not shut down, and tourist services, hotels, and tourist attractions continue to operate normally, except they must adhere to the nighttime curfew.

Other than the threat of violence, the major immediate impact on the tourism scene is the theoretical halting of all nightlife across Ecuador.

In the medium to long term, there is no way of knowing how Ecuador will suffer from a potential eventual drop in tourism revenue.

After all, as charming and picturesque as it is, we wouldn’t be the first ones to book a flight out to Quito anytime soon, not until the dust settles and there is more information available.

For those who still intend to visit, flights to and from Ecuador continue to operate normally without changes in schedule or time, so far, as the curfew provides an exception for a number of essential workers, as well as individuals traveling via airports during curfew hours.

A Cultural Hotspot That’s Been Overlooked For Far Too Long

Hostels are even cheaper, averaging $55 in popular tourist cities, and according to Budget Your Trip, a one-week ‘budget’ trip to Portugal for two people totals roughly $858, excluding flights, if traveling luxuriously is not an absolute must.

In fact, Lisbon was just crowned the cheapest city break in Europe recently, based on a 173-city research carried out by U.K. based Economist Intelligence Unit, and seeing it is the capital, the country’s most-visited destination, and where prices are typically higher, it confirms Portugal is indeed a bargain.
