For Americans, Europe is more commonly associated with summertime, when it’s nice and pleasant out to go for a pistachio gelato by a pebbly beach, ride Vespas down a cliffside road in an Amalfi town, or island-hop around the Aegean.

Sounds heavenly, as long as the scorching July heat and the thought of an inevitable sunburn do not faze you, and you’re not too worried about spending hours on end in a queue to visit the Eiffel Tower: it’s all about that signature European joie de vivre, right?

What if we told you some classic summer destinations are, in fact, best enjoyed in colder weather, when crowding is so minimal during mornings you can have the whole city to yourself, and prices are not so exorbitant?

Here are 4 European gems you should visit in winter:

Paris, France

Though Paris is relatively busy year-round, in winter, it feels unusually quiet-er, as people are not keen on flocking into the narrow streets of the Latin Quarter when temperatures drop, and museums like the Louvre or Orsay are not overrun by school groups fulfilling their summer trip schedule.

Perhaps Europe’s number one tourist destination, the French capital is beautiful regardless of season, what with its well-planned cityscape, a multitude of flowery cafés, and wide boulevards, but there’s no denying it is far more pleasant to stroll when the summer hordes are gone.

There are places that just fit that somber wintery aesthetic: believe us when we say there is nothing less idyllic than sharing your ‘secret’ picnic spot in Luxembourg Gardens with thousands of other romancing couples or sitting on the steps of a jam-packed Montmartre in mid-July.

We would very much rather walk around the quartier in the crisp winter air while trees are barren and offer more than just short glimpses of the stately Haussman architecture the foliage normally hides, and the local brasserie is not overflowing with seasonal tourists, but chatty, high-spirited locals.

Rome, Italy

Yet another destination that often gets ruined by mass tourism is Rome. Unlike other Southern European spots, it is not your typical beach destination.

Yes, there is a beach in the wider metropolitan region, more specifically in the Ostian suburbs, but culture enthusiasts dreaming of marveling at the Sistine Chapel or retracing the steps of gladiators upon entering the Colosseum are not exactly going out of their way to sunbathe in an off-path, largely residential coastal zone of Rome.

With that being said, why go in summer anyway?

Rome is a sightseeing hotspot, and between late May and early September, it is a literal furnace, with temperatures that soar above 100 degrees and mile-long queues snaking around the block for all of your bucket list attractions.

Between December and March, some rain is expected, and even the occasional snowfall should temperatures drop dramatically, but the sun still shines for half the time, and in a worst-case scenario, should every single day be cloudy and cold, you can bet a freshly-cooked Pasta alla Gricia and a non-industrialized macchiato will keep you happy, cozy and warm.

Unless you fancy elbowing your way through a crowd for pictures of Trevi Fountain, we strongly suggest you reserve your go on a Roman holiday off-season, as you won’t be sweating profusely, the volume of tourism is lower, and consumer prices are not hiked in response to an overwhelming demand.

Seville, Spain

Third on the list, Seville is perhaps Spain’s third most-visited city after Madrid and Barcelona.

Famous for a colorful Plaza de España, a grouping of stately buildings arranged in a half-circle bounded by a manmade canal, the maze-like Triana neighborhood, lined by narrow, whitewashed houses, and a landmark medieval Cathedral, it truly makes for one of the country’s most iconic cityscapes.

The only downside is Seville is located in what’s Europe’s hottest region, where it’s virtually impossible to stay outside for longer than a couple of hours in the scalding Sevillano summer: you shouldn’t be surprised if the city thermometer exceeds 120°F even after sundown.

Needless to say, winters are pretty mild, with an average of 60.8°F and only six days of rain.

This means you may still eat alfresco and wear light jackets and even shorts sightseeing during the day; that is, if you don’t mind moderately chilly winds.

Similarly to Rome, you’re not going to Seville for a Mediterranean beach vacation: it’s inland, and there’s no beach after all.

Instead, you’re going there for the architecture, delectable ethnic cuisine, and the peaceful city parks, which, thanks to Andalusia’s year-round warm weather, can remain verdant even in the low season.

Lisbon, Portugal

Fourth and final entry: Lisbon is a hilly port city sitting on the banks of River Tagus, right where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean, and it’s grown to be a massively popular summer destination for Americans in recent years.

Something many who have been to Lisbon will agree, however, is that unless you have a certain physique, and you have well-trained lungs and can cope with an overpowering heat, you cannot tackle the seven hills the sprawling Portuguese capital is built on, nor set out to explore without pausing every now and then for an orange sumo break in a climatized café.

We will go ahead and say Lisbon, much like Paris, Rome, and its neighboring Seville over the Spanish border, should be visited over winter.

The reasons for that have been stated one way or another previously:

It is more of a sightseeing, cultural destination, a quality it shares with Rome, and though the Portuguese coast is a short half-hour drive away, the average tourist is not flying all the Lisbon for beaches, especially when North Atlantic waters are noticeably colder than the Mediterranean.

They are drawn to the medieval castle perched atop the colorful Alfama district, the ancient convents, and the marvelous food scene.

During a temperate Lisboense winter, nights may be cold due to the strong winds coming from the Atlantic, and you should expect more rain, but daylight hours are plentiful, and the average temperature is a very comfortable 57.74°C.

Plus, wandering the narrow cobbled alleys of Lisbon accompanied by their significant other amid the dense mid-winter fog, a bottle of Carcavelos wine in hand, to the tune of a fado ballad as played by a Portuguese busker is something we think everyone should experience at least once.

Central America has always been the go-to spot for backpackers and young travelers looking to experience a culture different than their own and surround themselves with nature, yet this year, it’s surging in popularity not only with the adventurous type but also with Americans in general.

A growing number of U.S. passport holders are choosing the fascinating isthmus that connects both the Northern and Southern halves of the New World as their travel destination, and much of it has to do with the fact that most countries in the region are untouristy and pretty affordable.

One of them is the lesser-known Nicaragua, the largest sovereign state in Central America and one of the trendiest places to visit in 2024:

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, bordering the much smaller Honduras to the North and the tourist hotspot that is Costa Rica to the South while having open access to both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea along its Northeastern and Southwestern fronts.

Central America as a whole is famous for its wild nature, but there is something to be said about Nicaragua in particular: it may not be as developed as its Southern neighbor and certainly not as popular a destination, but it arguably has the most breathtaking scenery.

It is one of a handful of countries where you can literally navigate watercourses from the Pacific to the Caribbean, find as much as 7% of the world’s biodiversity while exploring the jungle, experience more than 70 ecosystems, and relax on perfectly unruffled, tourist-free beaches.

Unlike Costa Rica, Central America’s indisputable leader, Nicaragua is still largely underdeveloped, and though this can pose issues at times, especially in terms of commuting and the accessibility of some regions, it is precisely the low volume of tourism that gives it its unique charm.

Called the ‘Land of Lakes and Volcanos’, it boasts an enviable assortment of untouched landscapes and natural wonders:

With at least 19 volcanos, often part of wider natural parks dotted with peaks and jungle trails, Nicaragua’s plethora of hiking spots will surely make your thrill-seeking heart beat faster.

One of these volcanos is the landmark San Cristóbal, rising a monumental 1,745 meters above sea level and offering sweeping views of the verdant world below.

Hikers should beware, though: many volcanos in Nicaragua are currently active, and San Cristóbal itself has had its fair share of eruptions. Luckily, volcano experts can easily predict these, and activity providers will cease organizing guided hikes during eruption periods.

Gorgeous Beach Spots

The quaint Little Corn Island, off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, is one of such great options, as it is covered by lush vegetation and surrounded by a turquoise-colored reef.

Enjoy pristine swimming spots, sip on some coconut water by the shade of a palm tree, or gorge on a soulful breakfast in your boutique hotel: Little Corn is somewhere you go for slowing down, recharging, and basking in the sun.

For a weekend-long stay, one of the top recommendations on Booking.com is Little Corn Island Beach and Bungalow Hotel, with prices for a standard ‘Crusoe’ room starting from $366 for a minimum of two nights.

The easiest way to reach Little Corn is flying first from Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, to the neighboring, equally charming Big Corn Island, then taking a passenger boat over (the journey takes roughly 20 minutes).

The Pacific Side

On the mainland, more specifically on the Pacific side, Playa Maderas is yet another gorgeous sandy stretch you shouldn’t miss out on, unfolding along an azure ocean and distinctive for the shark fin-shaped geological formations distributed along the shoreline.

This is a surfing hotspot, and numerous surf schools based in neighboring San Juan del Sur operate locally.

Opting for a luxurious hotel instead? The Aqua Wellness Resort, tucked away in a quiet corner of the trendy Redonda Bay, is the ideal tropical getaway, with on-site restaurants, spa facilities, and privileged beach access.

Nicaragua Is Hugely Affordable

Accommodation costs aside, a one-week trip to Nicaragua will cost the average mid-range solo traveler $380, as per data compiled by BudgetYourTrip, while those traveling with a partner should expect expenses to total $759, or the equivalent in the local currency.

Nicaragua is one of the cheapest countries in Central America, and Latin America as a whole, due to its low cost of living and abundance of natural resources: much, if not all fruit sold in local markets is homegrown, and it is a largely self-sufficient country in terms of agricultural production.

Normally, travelers will spend $15 on meals per day when eating in non-expensive local restaurants.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, local authorities have highlighted it is now the main destination in Central America, a statement their counterparts in Costa Rica will certainly dispute at some point.

The Government expects 1.82 million tourists to have landed in Nicaragua before the end of 2023, up from 2019’s all-time high 1.2 million.

Other options include the Atlas Amadil Beach Hotel, famous locally for its aquatic park, where nightly rates start at only $183 for two adults, and the shockingly-luxurious Les Dunes D’Or Resort, a short 0.7-mile walk from central Agadir, with lagoon-style pools, spa facilities, and lush green gardens for the starting price of $136 per night for couples.

Oh, don’t get us started on the cheap, amazing food you can get outside the naturally pricier resort zone.

On average, travelers spend the equivalent to $13 on meals per day vacationing in Agadir, typically for a hearty meal – the couscous or tagine of your preference – and a jug of squeezed fruit, and we know it can sound too good to be true, but you must remember the cost of living in Morocco is far lower than in America.

If you’re going where the locals are, and you are doing your best to avoid the Euro-priced restaurants on the beachfront – though those are certainly worth checking out as Moroccan food with a high-end twist does have its value – you can have a memorable holiday and never go over budget.

In total, a one-week trip for two adults to Agadir is estimated at $819, as per the data shared by Budget Your Trip (this is likely to exclude flight tickets).

An Underrated Cultural Hub In North Africa

Hungry for some culture instead?

The city itself is essentially divided between the medina, or fortified Arab town, the oldest part and a maze of winding alleys lined by shops and merchant houses that now serves as a historic center, and external, more modern developments, added during the French colonial period.

Though much of the Old Town was severely damaged during an earthquake in the sixties, it is still centered around the ruins of a 16th-century Kasbah, or fortress, built by Morocco’s second Saadian Sultan, and it’s retained much of the ancient character following a successful reconstruction.

Agadir is perfect for immersing yourself in Moroccan culture, so make sure you take your time admiring the tapestries family-owned businesses will proudly display on their doorstep, the ornate architecture, and slowly savoring your way through the colorful medina.

Were it not for the occasional call to prayer emanating from the nearby medina’s perfectly-symmetrical Moorish minarets or the fascinating cacophony of shouts in Arabic and Tamazight – two official national languages – that join crashing waves as part of a single soundscape, it wouldn’t be hard to convince oneself they are in Iberian Europe instead.

This is particularly true in terms of safety, as Agadir is one of the least-risky destinations in Morocco.

Agadir Is Pretty Safe For African Standards

Americans should not be excessively concerned when visiting Morocco as a whole, as most issues facing tourists revolve around scamming and pickpockets, as opposed to actual violence like other far less safe African nations (South Africa, we’re looking at you).

Even though pickpocketing is a widespread issue in Morocco, in Agadir, it is not as pronounced, as the population is more affluent in general, and the presence of luxury hotels and high-end riads that draw Westerners to the Atlantic Coast means more policing and tighter surveillance.

According to Numbeo, crime in Agadir is ‘low’, with only a ‘moderate’ increase in incidents in the past three years.

In fact, it registers ‘moderate’, ‘low’, or ‘very low’ on all subcategories of crime, including car theft, robbery, insults, and attacks, and the only true aggravated problem seems to be corruption and bribery.

Even then, short-term resort or riad guests are unlikely to be affected by Morocco’s dysfunctional social services and politics.

How To Travel To Agadir This Winter

Getting to Agadir over winter has never been easier.

Luckily for Americans, nonstop flights connect the United States and Morocco. More specifically, from New York-JFK and Washington-Dulles to Mohammed V International, the main international airport serving Casablanca, the largest city in the country.

Flag carrier Royal Air Maroc is the operator for these flights, which run year-round.

Upon landing in Casablanca, Americans can use the European-standard Moroccan Railways to travel the 303 miles between the airport and Agadir, with trains running 45 times weekly, and plenty of first-class seats at affordable rates available.

Alternatively, they can fly to Agadir from Casablanca, within Morocco, or from a secondary transit hub in continental Europe, which offers numerous seasonal routes to the coastal resort from countless European cities.

Now that the world has reopened fully and normality has been reinstated, paving the way for the return of overtourism, travelers are seeking less crowded, off-the-beaten-path destinations where they can truly relax and appreciate a foreign country without all the distraction.

One of the lesser-known destinations in the undiscovered gem that is the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, is keeping a close eye on the fast-growing trend, so much so that it is planning to launch a brand new destination to keep high-end travelers looking for more exclusivity appeased.

Next year, it’s the magical Red Sea, a tourism hotspot waiting to happen where you should be headed:

Welcome To The Middle Eastern Caribbean

In the biggest piece of news to come out of the Middle East in years, their rising competitor Saudi Arabia has just confirmed a brand new luxury travel destination in their currently underdeveloped Red Sea Coast, touted as the Middle Eastern Caribbean.

The Red Sea is an enclosed body of water that the Arab Kingdom straddles.

Famous for its high concentration of salt and turquoise-blue hue, it’s remained largely ignored as a tourist destination for years.

Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea extends for over a thousand miles, from the border with the neighboring Kingdom of Jordan to the North and to Yemen in the South, and much of the coast remains untarnished.

This is largely due to Saudi’s late opening for tourism, as only in recent years has the kingdom opened its doors to foreign visitors.

Local authorities are now keen on catching up with their fellow Gulf partners, having announced the opening of a new resort zone in the Red Sea region.

What’s On The Cards For The Red Sea Coast?

According to the Red Sea project files, as many as 22 of the region’s 90 islands will be developed, with the construction of up to 50 luxury accommodations comprising 8,000 rooms and an additional 1,000 residential properties by 2030.

This is one of the largest development projects seen in the Middle East currently, which should also bear witness to the launch of a giant moon-shaped resort in Dubai.

Though the final project will not be delivered until 2030 at the earliest, a number of properties are already popping up along the coast and around the 90-island archipelago.

As executive director Chopra stated, ‘regenerative tourism’ is at the front of Saudi’s new tourism offer, as the kingdom seeks to ‘enhance’ the local communities and environment and offer more ‘transformative’ experiences as opposed to just luxury.

The Ummahat Islands will be the first to host new hotels, namely the St. Regis Red Sea Resort, where tourists can find accommodation in villas on land or floating on water, set to compete with a Ritz-Carlton for guests.

On Shura Island, Saudi leaders are planning to build a 1.2-kilometer bridge connecting it to the region’s main international airport, for the shortest possible travel distance of 30 minutes from the hub to the resort zones.

Shura itself will also feature 11 low-rise resorts designed to resemble ‘coral washed up on the beach’.

Naturally, as development spreads to other islands and coastal strips on the Red Sea mainland, visitors can expect the introduction of more state-of-the-art resorts, golf courses, marinas, and dining spots.

So far, two inland resorts have been confirmed, Desert Rock and Southern. Dunes.

There is more: Sheybarah, a quaint island 45 minutes by ferry from the mainland, is expected to become a ‘hyper-luxury’, ultra-exclusive resort with numerous over-water pods – yes, it’s a running theme – which architects have described as ‘bubbles of a diver’.

The Ultra-Luxurious Triple Bay

Elsewhere, in Amaala, a planned luxury tourism megaproject titled Triple Bay, a wellness hub is being built in an area of outstanding natural beauty, bounded by mountainous landscapes and a ‘sparkling’ sea, where guests will be able to practice diving, yachting, and other watersports.

Triple Bay is bowing in 2024 with 3,000 rooms between 25 hotels and their adjacent 900 villas and apartments, all powered by renewable energy and boasting a zero-carbon footprint, so it won’t be long until tourists can check it out for themselves.

When it comes to overtourism, Saudi Arabia is ensuring the unspoiled nature reserve that is the Red Sea does not suffer the brunt of these concurrent development projects by initially setting a cap of one million visitors a year in the area (500,000 at Amaala).

The Saudi Red Sea is home to the world’s fourth-largest barrier reef, majestic mountains, inactive volcanoes, and ancient historical sites, and the visitor cap will ensure it remains an exclusive luxury travel destination.

Finally, the newly-opened Red Sea International Airport, which began operations only in September of this year, will offer visitors a truly seamless experience, as they will be allowed to breeze past security and will not be required to pick up their own luggage.

Instead, it will be sent directly to their resort.

Judging by the size of the two leading hotels, it is almost as if travelers are favoring resorts that feel more exclusive, almost never feel busy due to the fewer rooms available, and that focus on wellness: further down the list, the One&Only Palmilla is a prime example of that.

Winter Has The Best Weather

Finally, winter is a great time to visit Cartagena because of the weather!

Cartagena has a year-round tropical climate, and there’s very little temperature variation throughout the year. Typically, the daily high is around 89° F, and the low is around 79° F. However, during the winter, it can be a couple of degrees cooler so it’s not quite as sweltering hot.

December through April is also considered the “dry season” in Cartagena. This means you’ll have sunnier weather with less rain. Additionally, it’s not as humid during the winter.

If you are planning a trip to Buenos Aires, the charming capital of Argentina and South America’s most prominent foodie hotspot, you are in for a treat.

Famous for its European-inspired architecture, wide boulevards, grand parks, and award-winning restaurants, BA (in the short form) has already been a source of fascination for decades, but it’s truly surged in popularity this year for two reasons.

It is one of the cheapest city breaks for Americans going abroad due to both the ‘tourist dollar’ scheme, which effectively doubles the value of your money when buying pesos in Argentina, compared to the official rate applicable to overseas purchases, and the low consumer prices.

Since the nineties, the South American gem has made great strides in increasing safety in its cities and tackling its gang-related problems, but it is still miles behind other states in the region in terms of safety.

This year, numerous tourists have reported being victims of violence when traveling in Colombia, and Medellin is once again on track to become the crime capital of the continent.

And U.S. nationals are particularly concerned as they are perceived to have money and make for easy targets.

If you are visiting Colombia in 2024, you should ensure you maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid walking alone late at night, including in touristy neighborhoods, and leave valuable items at your hotel, preferably in a safe.

Machu Picchu Will Allow More Tourists To Visit Every Day

On a happier note, more tourists will now be allowed to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site and Wonder of the World that is Machu Picchu.

One of the most popular tourist attractions for country-hoppers in South America, it offers an iconic postcard-ready view, with well-preserved terraces and ruined yet impressive pre-Columbian dwellings resting high on a mountain in the Peruvian highlands.

If you’re lucky enough, you may get to feed an alpaca and try the local pisco drink, which is supposed to help you with altitude sickness, and the best thing is you will no longer have to fight as hard for a spot on a guided tour or plan your visit far in advance.

In the past, Machu Picchu hosted a maximum of 3,800 visitors per day, and not all were fortunate enough to get tickets on time.

From January 1, however, the Ministry of Culture, responsible for overseeing visits to Machu Picchu, will be allowing as many as 4,500 guests daily, and as high as 5,600 on busier days, helping accommodate more tourists and ensuring no one misses out on this World Wonder.

Visas For Brazil. For Americans.

Perhaps the most serious update on this list, Brazil’s latest reshuffle of entry rules is something you don’t want to read inattentively – if you are American.

As we reported a few months ago, the largest country in South America is bringing back visa restrictions for U.S. passport holders in a tit-for-tat move that’s been interpreted as a response to America’s own harsh visa policies applied to Brazilians.

As promised, the visa will be digital, but something we did not know at the time was that the application process very much resembles a typical visa procedure, which is burdensome as you are about to learn.

No, you will not have to travel to the nearest Brazilian Consulate to apply for an entry permit and an interview, you can submit your information from the comfort of your home right here.

You will, however, be expected to upload an exhaustive list of documents:
- The completed application form itself
- The relevant data on your passport
- A colored digital passport-style photo*
- Confirmation of outbound and return flights
- Bank statements for the last 30 days showing a balance of at least $2,000 for travel
*Passport photos are typically taken on a white background, and the face of the individual must be fully visible. When wearing glasses, they must ensure there is no light reflection. More information can be found in the application form.

Application will cost $80.90, and the application platform is run by VFS Global.

It is live now, and you can already make your application if you are due to arrive to Brazil after January 10 and you hold a U.S., Canada, or Australian passport.

European, British, New Zealand, Japanese, and most foreign nationals do not need visas for Brazil, as Brazilians can travel to those countries and territories visa-free.

Having obtained a visa, Americans will be allowed to travel to Brazil on a single visa for 10 years.

This means you can enter Brazil for up to 90 days on different trips within the next decade after getting a visa approval.

Meanwhile, Canadians and Australians will be granted a five-year visa upon approval.
