After three years of confusing travel rules, 2023 finally marked the comeback of tourism across the globe.

Throughout the year, we have seen a boom in bookings as travelers took to the skies in droves in search of that bucket list spot they could only dream about visiting a while back (but couldn’t).

As per usual, Google has been tracking this fast-growing trend, and in the top ten of their ‘Year in Search’ list, one country in particular was highlighted as the most sought-after destination in its own continent, as well as a cultural behemoth awaiting (re)discovery now that normality has resumed.

Egypt is the eighth most-searched country currently, and with record growth expected ahead of the annual round-up, it seems pretty safe to say it has been one of 2023’s rising stars.

The question is: why?

Why Is Egypt So Popular In Google Searches Right Now?

A country as ancient as civilization itself, Egypt has been on the radar of Americans for years, and you know already why that may be.

It is the land of Pharaos, boasting unique landscapes, a fascinating culture, and a plethora of world wonders.

We won’t bore you with yet another copy-and-paste article on the marvels of pyramid-dotted Egypt: there are plenty of those doing the rounds already.

Instead, we would like to divert your attention to why Egypt is trending right now, and posting record rates of growth in 2023 specifically, and what has changed compared to previous years.

In other words, why are more Americans taking the 11-hour-plus Transatlantic flight to Cairo when there is an exhaustive list of alternative destinations they could explore instead?

Egypt Was A Less Tense To Visit In 2023

First of all, if you’ve been to Egypt at all in the last two or three years, and you have returned yet again in 2023, you might have noticed the atmosphere is a lot less tense.

The pandemic has finally subsided, and the unfathomable sanitary controls that changed with little warning numerous times in the span of a single week no longer apply.

U.S. citizens – in fact, every other foreigner – can once again visit Egypt curb-free.

Other than the visa-on-arrival policy, a bureaucratic hurdle the Egyptian Government is yet to loosen, you are no longer required to satisfy health-related entry requirements, fill out complicated forms at the airport, or observe crazy rules while being a guest at a resort.

The return of normality is one reason why Egypt’s soaring in popularity in 2023, but that is not all.

After all, every single country has axed restrictions as well, some much sooner than Egypt.

Is Egyptomania Back?

This brings us to reason number two, and perhaps the most important one of all: the renewed interest in cultural expeditions among Americans.

2023 has been the year of the culturephile, and the resurgence of South American colonial cities, off-path Europe, and mystical Southeast Asia as trendy tourism hotspots only go to show there are truly no limits as to how far Westerners will go to have more meaningful experiences when traveling.

In terms of cultural expeditions, Egypt is really a no-brainer.

Its History dates back several millennia, and some of the oldest structures created by man can be found within its borders, including the Great Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza, but these alone can’t explain Egyptomania picking up steam this year specifically.

Instead, we must look at new developments that are fuelling more searches, and thus holiday bookings than the expected average, and the biggest one of them is the soon-to-be-launched Great Egyptian Museum, opening in early 2024.

20 years in the making, and to the tune of a billion dollars, this majestic center for the culture and sciences is finally bowing after much anticipation, presenting to the public for the first time a vast selection of artifacts that previously did not have a permanent home.

One of them is Tutankhamen’s sarcophagus, its associated 5,000 artifacts that were unearthed when the legendary Pharao’s tomb was discovered in the 1920s, a 3,200-year-old statue of Ramses the Great, and the relatively well-preserved sun-powered, 2,500-year-old Khufu ship.

Aside from the cultural stuff, a string of new hotel openings and experiences has improved Egypt’s tourist offer this year, from a luxurious Four Seasons palace in Sharm El Sheik, the country’s leading resort city, to the announcement of a new 282-key state-of-the-art Hilton in Marsa Alam.

Elsewhere along the Nile, cruise liner Viking has debuted one of its most remarkable products yet, the five-star Viking Aton river cruise, taking guests on a 12-day ‘Pharaos & Pyramids’ adventure, starting with a three-night stay in Cairo before proceeding to an eight-day journey down the Nile.

Points of interest include the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens, as well as its counterpart Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings, visits to the Temples of Khnum, Dendera, Abu Simbel, and High Dam, and traditional Nubian villages.

All in all, it’s an exciting period to visit Egypt, as the country is waking up from its pandemic slumber, and it has a number of tricks up its sleeve.

Did we mention already it even has its own Bali? Yep. Get those flight tickets right away.

Egypt Is Affordable By Western Standards

Finally, a huge part of why Egypt is racking up large arrival numbers is its high affordability.

For an all-expenses-paid vacation on the Red Sea coast, you will likely have to fork out at least a couple thousand dollars for a one-week stint at a resort, but for those on a budget and who are not necessarily looking to splurge on a vacation, they can definitely get by on a ‘mid’ $361 for the week.

The figure is based on data gathered by Budget Your Trip, and includes acommodation, transport, food, and tourist attractions.

According to the platform, in the past travelers have spent on average $26 per day, or the equivalent in the local currency, when opting for a mid-range style of travel, or a very reasonable $68 when indulging in some luxury.

The average cost of an overnight at a budget hotel is $23, though it can be a lot more expensive depending on a traveler’s preferences and whether they are the Four Seasons or family-owned, affordable neighborhood hotel type.

The point is that consumer prices in Egypt are typically lower for tourists due to the devalued currency, and that is why it won’t weigh heavily on anyone’s pockets, even if they are actively looking to spend more on comfort.

Egypt has made its mark in 2023 as one of the trendiest destinations of the post-pandemic scene, and based on Google searches alone, it could be set for a historical 2024.

These 2 Beautiful European Countries Are Offering Unlimited Train Travel For Only $55

Perhaps the most unlikely travel trend to have resurged in 2023, train travel is back in full force, with numerous countries across the globe either reinstating previously defunded routes, or even launching brand new ones – scenic rides across the Mayan Riviera, anyone?

Much of the action has been centered, however, in Europe: boasting a well-connected train network linking multiple countries, and with its goal to reduce carbon emissions in the medium-term drastically, the Old Continent has turned to the railway to boost tourism.

Now, both Germany and Hungary, two of Europe’s most beautiful destinations, are offering unlimited all-you-can-travel train passes for around $55, and if we were you, we wouldn’t want to miss out, especially when there is no way of telling how long the generous offers will last.

One can always use some further encouragement, so perhaps it’s worth mentioning there is an additional third country you can travel in for free, and it is just as fascinating as the other two.

Lucky for you, this mysterious, hugely-underrated destination is only a stone’s throw away from the German border.

First of all, let’s have a look at the German and Hungarian offers.

How Does The German Pass Work?

Germany launched their €49 ticket, equaling roughly $55, last March.

The measure, believed to be temporary at the time, proved so successful the Government has continued applying it, and it looks set to become permanent, with Transport Minister Volker Wissing referring to it as the ‘biggest public transport reform in German History’.

The Deutschlandticket, as it is formally called, or simply ‘Germany Ticket’, allows holders to travel as many times as they want, on any regional public transportation routes, across almost the entire country for a set monthly price.

With that being said, its validity applies mostly to local and medium-distance transportation, such as metropolitan regions or intra-state travel, and it functions as a digital subscription that can be canceled ahead of the next month’s billing.

Essentially, subscribers can board any short and medium-distance buses and trains they would like during their subscription period, based on the region of Germany they are currently traveling.

For instance, those using the pass in metropolitan Berlin can now travel from the German capital to the neighboring State of Brandenburg freely, without paying additional fees, as Brandenburg would be considered short to medium-distance travel.

On the other hand, pass holders cannot board trains from Berlin to Frankfurt or Berlin to Cologne without booking an independent train ticket, as it would entail boarding a long-distance train.

This is true for all long-distance routes, including any trains operated by DB Fernverkehr AG, RE included, and FlixTrain (IC, EC, and ICE).

Ticket validity varies per region, and it all depends on where the pass is purchased and, most importantly, which region it is linked to and where it is activated.

Still, it is a great way to save money traveling in Germany as the overall cost of multi-city train journeys within a single state, such as Bavaria, home to Munich, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Würzburg, Bamberg and other popular historical hotspots will normally cost a lot more than $55 without a pass.

Additionally, pass holders can hop on certain eligible trains from/to stations in neighboring countries when operated by a German operator and when the pass is associated with the state or region of entry.

These include Tønder in Denmark, Wissembourg in France, Basel in Switzerland, and Świnoujście in Poland.

Tickets can be purchased directly from Germany’s national Deutsche Banh or from local transport providers in different cities.

What About Hungary?

As for Hungary, two travel passes are available, one nationwide and one for counties.

Traveling across the Eastern European gem, tourists can purchase a ‘National Travel Card‘, granting them access to not only every train but every bus line in the country, as long as the following companies operate it:
- MÁV-START
- MÁV-HÉV
- GYSEV
- Volánbusz (buses only)
For the duration of the pass, which lasts 30 days, you are free to city-hop at leisure, from the stately Austrian-Hungarian thermal pool hotspot that is Budapest to the serene Lake Balaton, known as the ‘Hungarian Sea’, to the ancient cultural hotspot of Pécs, near the Croatian border.

Much like the Germany Ticket, Hungary’s national pass costs only 18,900 Hungarian forint, or approximately $55, and foreign visitors are eligible to buy them at more than 1,100 ticket booths around Hungary.

All you have to do is simply walk into any train station, find the nearest MÁV-START, GYSEV, or Volánbusz office, or simply a vending machine, and select the option that best suits you.

It is worth noting this pass cannot be used in municipal services, meaning you cannot use it for taking the tram or metro in the wider metropolitan zone of Budapest, or any regional public transportation in any specific Hungarian city.

In a way, it is the opposite of the German pass.

Fortunately, Hungary then introduced a ‘County Travel Card’, allowing holders unlimited bus and rail travel in one of its 19 counties. It costs roughly $27, and it’s the perfect option for tourists looking to stay in a single location for a while longer.

This option is sure to make digital nomads happy, as Budapest is quickly becoming one of the world’s top nomad destinations, and they often reside in the city for between one to three months at a time.

If you are a student, you should know you are eligible for a 90 percent discount buying these tickets, so make sure you bring a valid international student ID mentioning your status.

What About The Third Mysterious Country?

There is still one country missing, after all.

$55 all-you-can-travel train passes sound great, but how about unlimited free travel for both residents and tourists alike?

Luxembourg is currently the only European nation to extend this privilege to non-tax-paying visitors, as they can hop on any train or bus of their liking around the principality without pre-booking and explore one of the prettiest, most fairytalish destinations extensively sans exorbitant ticket fees.

You read that right, no ifs or but’s or caveats:

This is all-encompassing free public transportation, regardless of route, train line, or distance, applying to all nationalities, provided it is a national route that does not cross Luxembourg’s borders with France, Germany, or Belgium.

Some of the top sights to see in ‘Lux’, as Europeans commonly call it, include Luxembourg City, the compact national capital, famous for its landmark medieval fortress and cobbled historic center, Vianden, where one of the largest and most impressive medieval castles sits, and the charming central town of Ettelbruck.

As Luxembourg is a tiny country, you can cover much of the territory in three to five days, making it a perfect intermediate destination on your cross-country European trip.

Palm Beach County in South Florida just announced a new tourism record, welcoming 9.5 million tourists this year. Most of these visitors stayed in West Palm Beach, the largest town in the county.

Here’s why West Palm Beach is so popular with travelers right now:

Easier Than Ever To Get To

According to reports, travel to West Palm Beach was bolstered this year by growing airplane and train traffic.

Several airlines launched new flights to Palm Beach International Airport this year.

Delta Air Lines started service from White Plains, New York to PBI, while the low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines launched flights from Wilmington, Delaware to PBI.

These and other seasonal routes make it easy for travelers from other parts of the United States to get to sunny West Palm Beach, especially to escape the cold this winter.

Additionally, the long-awaited Brightline train from Miami to Orlando officially launched this year, connecting more travelers to West Palm Beach.

Previously, Brightline opened stations in West Palm Beach and Boca Raton, two towns in Palm Beach County, but now stations have also opened in Miami and Orlando.

West Palm Beach is just one hour and 15 minutes by train from Miami and two hours and 10 minutes from Orlando.

A More Laidback Alternative To Miami

Miami is known for being one of South Florida’s biggest hotspots, offering an incredible blend of great beaches, crazy nightlife, delicious food, and a vibrant arts and culture scene.

However, Miami is a major metropolis, whereas West Palm Beach is a smaller, more laidback town with about one-quarter the population of Miami.

This makes it a more laidback and relaxing alternative to Miami. But make no mistake, there are still plenty of things going on in West Palm Beach! The town has gorgeous beaches on par with those in Miami, as well as tons of opportunities for shopping, dining, and nightlife.

Let’s be real, though – there’s no Spirit Airlines for Antarctica. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny no matter your method of transport.

There are also options to fly in and cruise back for those wanting to experience both.

Reasons To Visit

Beyond bragging to your friends you went to one of the most bucket-list-worthy destinations on Earth, the main reason to go is you’ll make lifelong memories for doing so.

There is no place on the planet as untouched as Antarctica. Tourists are only allowed so far in. Those who do touch land will be limited.

According to Jeremy Clubb, the Founder of Antarctica Cruises, many solo travelers are seeking unique experiences in far-out places.

The travel insurance expert has analyzed more than three million itineraries for roundtrips from the U.S. during a key winter holiday period to determine which international destinations are the most popular.

The top 10 is a pretty enticing list of some of the best destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe.

I know where I’d choose (Mexico, I’m looking at you), but what about you?

1. Cancun, Mexico

Like you really need someone to tell you that Cancun is an awesome destination for a winter escape.

But did you know that the year 2024 will be one of the best times to visit this Mexican favorite?

Why not get in there early and take advantage of a winter trip in January or February?

The new Maya train has just begun operations and there’s a new airport in nearby Tulum, making the entire region around Cancun even easier to explore.

There’s also a plethora of new hotels and resorts in the region soon to open – so there’ll be more choice and probably slightly cheaper prices due to the competition.

2. London, United Kingdom

I’m British, so you don’t need to tell me how much it rains in the United Kingdom, but let me tell you that the winter is still a magical time to visit the capital city of London.

The city is iconic, and in reality, it’s more like visiting multiple cities in one if you take the time to tour around.

Sure, the headline acts such as the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, and the London Eye are worth your time, but you can enjoy a more off-path experience by checking out some of the trendier neighborhoods – each with their own distinct vibe.

My advice would be to explore places like Bermondsey for its indie breweries, Hackney for its vibrant culture, and Shoreditch for some great nightlife, including one of the best blues bars you will find on this side of the Atlantic.

Why This Asian Country Will Be One Of The Most Popular Destinations For 2024

From 2020 to early 2023, visiting Japan was a distant dream for a majority of travelers.

As the country grappled with the effects of a health crisis, most foreign tourists were routinely barred from entry, including U.S. passport holders.

After nearly three years, however, the country finally slammed its doors open and began welcoming visitors again without restrictions. It’s no surprise it shot straight to the top ten of Google’s Most Searched Destinations, in a position it hadn’t held in a while.

Bookings for Japan have increased dramatically since, and if the latest travel trends are anything to go by, it could be set for a truly phenomenal 2024.

Amid the renewed Japanophilia, you may still be wondering why the East Asian country is suddenly so popular, again, especially when other Asian countries that also adopted restrictive measures, such as China, are yet to see as strong a rebound on the international tourism front.

Why Is Japan So Popular Right Now?

Japan has historically been one of the top destinations for Americans in the Asian continent, owing to their close historical ties, the unshakable Japanese-American camaraderie, and, of course, the country’s awe-inspiring culture.

This is all old news.

We are not here to regurgitate previously-written pieces on how exciting Tokyo is, Osaka’s world-class museums, or Kyoto’s picturesque cobbled alleys and centuries-old temples that have been left virtually untouched by two devastating world wars.

Of course, Japan’s perennial attractions an important role in the country’s resurgence, but that in itself does not account solely for a record-breaking return to pre-crisis tourism levels in only a few months, considering the wider reopening only took place last April.

So why, then, are tourists suddenly so invested in Japan?

It goes without saying that part of it has to do with the re-established flight connections between Japan and America, Europe, and most of the world, following a number of years of severed ties and, thus, a drastic reduction in travel demand, but we’re digging a little deeper here.

In preparing for its post-crisis relaunch, Japan is greatly diversifying its tourist offer.

Japan Is More Incredible Than It Ever Was

Overtourism was a major concern for Japanese authorities before the pandemic struck, mainly because travel demand was restricted to three major destinations, with all ‘ultimate’ Japan itineraries including the aforementioned Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto trio, and they are keen on avoiding that.

Now, the Government is promoting a bunch of lesser-known spots tourists were previously oblivious to.

Some of the new focus areas include Ishikawa, one of the country’s unsung foodie hotspots and perhaps the best destination for sampling Japanese seafood and all its variations, and Wakayama, which marks the start of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route.

Crisscrossing the Kii Peninsula, this mountainous footpath surrounded by unspoiled nature leads to all Three Grand Shrines of Kumano, a triad of hugely important religious sites dating back centuries, and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site that will be celebrating its 20 years on the list in 2024.

As stated by Miho Oguri, Marketing and Communications Manager at JNTO (Japan National Tourism Organization), their focus next year is to promote Japan’s ‘regional areas’ to ‘let travelers see more of the variety of cultures in-depth’.

Other initiatives include the opening of a whopping 370km trail traversing at least three national parks in eastern Hokkaido, offering access to traditional villages and unheard-of natural wonders, and helping adventurous tourists reach ‘deep Japan’.

Japan’s popularity boom can also be explained by seasonal travel fatigue.

A Year-Round Destination

For years, Japan has been known as a springtime destination, as it is when cherry blossoms spring up in their vibrant colors, and much of the country’s inbound tourism is concentrated between the months of March and May.

In 2023, those dynamics changed.

Summer has brought more lively outdoor festivals; a sudden spike in bookings was seen during the fall period, dubbed the ‘new springtime’ for Japan due to the smaller crowds and magnificent foliage, which rivals cherry blossoms in beauty, and even winter travel is gaining traction.

Japan is not a widely-known snow and ski destination, but the weaker yen, and the largely underdeveloped Japanese highlands are now luring more investors, with several infrastructure projects and tourist facilities popping up.

This December, a new 78-key ski resort is opening its doors in Furano, in the so-called ‘belly button’ of Northern Hokkaido, a minimalist design, and rooms in comforting wooden tones that will certainly help American visitors get in the mood for a winter getaway in Japan.

The Nozo Hotel is among Japan’s most hotly-anticipated openings this year, as it is set against the pristine white landscape of Hokkaido Island’s mountainous North, and it is equipped with a spa, where cold water dips and saunas are available, and chic restaurants and cocktail bars.

Nozo is two hours away from Chitose International Airport, serving Sapporo, and an even shorter one-hour drive from the domestic Asahikawa Airport.

In 2024, additional luxurious retreats will be bowing, including Japan’s first-ever Rosewood listing in the tropical Miyakojima Island, famous for its golden sand beaches and turquoise seas, and a Six Senses in charming Kyoto.

As Oguri reiterated, authorities are pushing for Japan to become a ‘year-round destination‘.

Finally, there is the fact that Japan is becoming cheaper to travel.

Cheaper Prices

Not only has the Government greenlit a number of projects that make it easier for tourists to explore Japan on a budget, such as a new one-day travel pass for Eastern destinations, but the Japanese currency itself – the yen – is now weaker than it was pre-2019.

Regarding the new pass, it’s an all-you-can-ride ticket for all JR East-operated lines.

Unfortunately, these do not cover the typical Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Hiroshima itinerary, but it does allow holders unlimited travel between destinations such as Aomori, Sendai, Kanazawa, Nagano, Niigata and Morioka, six of Japan’s most fascinating off-path gems.

With tickets starting at just 10,000 yen, or only $70.53 at the current exchange rate, you can even hop on a shinkansen bullet train line to get to your preferred destinations faster.

As for the yen, this year, it’s reached new lows against the dollar, trading at a threshold of ¥150, when in 2019, prior to the health crisis, it equaled only ¥109.

Argentina’s recently elected government has just slashed the value of its currency by 50% compared to the U.S. dollar in a bid to tackle economic challenges in the country.

This means that your money will now go twice as far – one dollar used to be about 390 Argentinian pesos, now it is about 800.

It may seem a bit insensitive to cash in on another country’s financial woes, but one of the main benefits of this move from the Argentinian government’s perspective is that it should attract more tourists into the country and, subsequently more spending and investment.

Digital Nomads Are Welcome

Argentina is a very forward-thinking country when it comes to welcoming digital nomads to its shores – it was recently ranked South America’s best destination for such travelers.

You can stay in Argentina for 90 days without doing any additional paperwork, which may already be enough for some, however, you can extend that to 180 days with the easy-to-apply-for digital nomad visa.

The visa can then be renewed for a further 180 days if you meet the desired criteria.

Argentina has more than 300 different co-working spaces and the average cost of living for digital nomads comes up at about $500 per month.

Bustling Buenos Aires

Most travelers will arrive first in Buenos Aires when they get to Argentina, and there are plenty of reasons to hang around in this city.
