Planning a trip can sometimes be just as exciting as taking the trip itself, the only real problem is choosing where to go.
For those seeking inspiration, online travel guide Travel Lemming just released its annual list of best places to travel in 2024 as chosen by its team of editorial experts.
While the full list contains no less than 50 different destinations, the top six alone are more than enough to get your travel inspiration juices flowing.
Here they are:
1. Yucatán, Mexico
It kind of had to be, didn’t it? The Mexican state of Yucatán has long been a favorite of American travelers and that looks set to continue into next year.
From pretty beach towns like Sisal and Chicxulub Puerto, to the mysterious and beautiful Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Uxmal, Yucatán has something for everyone.
The colorful, cobbled streets of Merida are a great place to base yourself while you explore this stunning place.
And the whole region is about to get easier to visit thanks to new flights direct from the United States into the brand-new Tulum International Airport in the neighboring state Quintana Roo, as well as the introduction of the Maya Train which will connect them.
2. Gizo, Solomon Islands
This location is for those who truly love to get away from it all when they travel.
Gizo is a small town located on Ghizo Island in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands.
This island paradise offers a stunning place to relax and unwind and has relatively good access, considering how remote it is – you can fly into a small airstrip on Nusa Tupe Island and then hop on a short boat ride to Gizo from there.
Gizo also offers unrivaled bird and wildlife watching, amazing diving, and several wrecks of machinery from the Second World War that you can visit close-up.
3. Stavanger, Norway
This picturesque and history-rich Norwegian city is a fun and vibrant place to spend a few days taking in the best of the country’s culture.
A university town and one of the epicenters of Norway’s oil industry, in Stavanger, you will find a wealth of high-quality restaurants serving seafood delicacies as well as some fascinating history.
The Gamle Stavanger area of the city is one of its most photogenic with a crisscross of typical Norwegian wooden houses, while in the south you can relax on the secluded Sola Beach.
One of the real highlights of Stavanger is the nearby Preikestolen (pulpit rock), which is a huge, dramatic cliff face jutting out over the Lysefjord.
It offers incredible views and was even used as a filming location in the movie ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’.
4. Antigua, Guatemala
If colorful colonial towns full of charm and history are your thing but you feel like a change from Mexico, then Antigua in Guatemala may be for you.
Founded way back in the 1500s, this city was once the capital of Spanish colonial Central America.
Nowadays, the city is a hub for backpackers and combines beautiful historical sites such as San Francisco Church with buzzing nightlife and a great street food scene.
5. Memphis, Tennessee
Memphis is a city that really knows how to show you a good time.
As the self-proclaimed home of blues, soul, and rock and roll, you can find live music in bars on almost every street corner – it’s also home to the famous Beale Street, Blues Hall of Fame, Stax Museum of American Soul Music, and Sun Studio.
The other main thing to do in Memphis besides getting your hit of live music is eat some barbecue food.
The city is famous for this cuisine and whether it’s pulled pork, ribs, or a barbecue bologna sandwich, the food here makes the city smell and taste as good as it sounds.
6. Phú Quoc, Vietnam
Nicknamed ‘Pearl Island’, this idyllic Southeast Asian gem in Vietnam is the perfect place to soak up everything good this region has to offer.
It has over 90 miles of beautiful coastline with white sand beaches and turquoise seas, and it remains warm and sunny most of the year thanks to its tropical climate.
One unique thing about Phú Quoc is that it’s famous for fish sauce, and there is even a factory that you can tour to see how it’s made.
Once you’ve done that, then enjoy how great it makes food taste on a floating restaurant offshore.
We tend to think that most fall and winter travel is reserved for Europe’s cultural cities and Mexico’s dreamy beaches; however, right now, there’s one particular Middle Eastern country that’s rivaling the world’s most coveted hotspots in terms of traveler interest.

The charming historic district of Casco Viejo is a great place to spend your days wandering the alleys, not to mention hitting up all the rooftop pools, cafes, and bars while getting your work done. Of course, you can visit the Panama Canal and impress your friends when they come to visit you here with a trip to this marvel.
Panama City is multi-cultural and vibrant. English is commonly spoken, and they use the U.S. dollar as their currency, meaning there is no need to convert in your head all the time.
This sprawling and chaotic capital city is not for everyone, and there are many areas you must avoid, but the city does have its’ charms and would make a great digital nomad base for a while.
You can snag a posh apartment in a modern and very secure building with a rooftop pool for a shockingly low price, and other amenities such as groceries and wifi are also quite cheap.
The view of the surrounding countryside is pretty great, and loads of expat-friendly bars, cafes, and restaurants are all around. Getting around by rideshare apps is easy here, and the sheer size of this city means there is always something new to discover.
Another reason to come to San Salvador is the people. El Salvadorians are some of the warmest you will meet, and they welcome people’s interest in their country. Day trips to nearby villages and sites such as Suchitoto or Lake Coatepeque are always an option when you get some downtime as well.
Granada, Nicaragua
Nicaragua is one of the most underrated countries in Latin America, and ask anyone who has been there, and they will likely tell you that it’s the charming and color-packed city of Granada that sticks out in their minds the most for a digital nomad base.
While it’s not the capital (that’s Managua), Granada sits on the shores of the imposing Lake Nicaragua and offers loads of day trips to Ometepe Island, or Volcanos and lakes cut as the polar Laguna Apoyo.
The city itself is stunning and colonial, and apartments are cheap and amenities very affordable. While this city is overall very safe, there are of course things to be aware of and places to avoid. Just ask any seasoned expat or helpful local, and they won’t steer you in the wrong direction.
Guatemala is full of great places to visit, and most make good places for digital nomads to base themselves as well. Many people love the stunning Lake Atitlan, and some prefer the nice areas in Guatemala City, but my pick is the absolutely charming city of Antigua.
Antigua is a well-preserved colonial city, and the cobblestone streets are lined with every type of restaurant, guesthouse, shop, and cafe that you can imagine. There are loads of American dining options here in case that’s what you are looking for (including the most beautiful Wendy’s and Starbucks you will ever see).
The city sits in the shadow of the imposing Acatenango Volcano, and the surrounding countryside is a view that doesn’t get old.
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Many come to the trending Dominican Republic and head straight to the beaches, and for good reason. This country is known for its sandy beaches and while these coastal towns can make for some great digital nomad options, it’s the vibrant capital city of Santo Domingo that makes this list.
While this city can be a bit overwhelming and there are many areas that you want to avoid, the colorful and culture-packed historic district is a must-see. There is enough to enjoy here that setting up here as a digital nomad would make sense.
With restaurants and cafes lining all the streets and modern supermarkets and accommodations around every turn, the city could make a great place to call home for a bit and offers enough day trips to nature and beaches to keep you busy.

There is one underrated Latin American country that has been racking around in my brain constantly since I visited, and I already can’t wait to go back!
Here is why this underrated Latin American country should be your next getaway:
A Country Of Many Worlds
One thing there is no arguing about is that Ecuador is home to some of the most unique landscapes on Earth together in one easy-to-explore package.
One of the things that amazed me about Ecuador the most was how many different ecosystems you could see during a 30-minute car ride.
Dry rainforest, desert, jungle, beach, a brackish river — all a quick car ride from each other!
While many destinations may leave you wondering what to do with your time, Ecuador will wow you with something as simple as a ride in the car.
During my visit, I started my journey in the country’s capital and one of its most well-known cities, Quito.
Up, Up, and Away
Quito is a gorgeous city nestled in the Andes mountains and is one of the highest capital cities on Earth with an elevation of 9,350 feet (2,850 meters). It has one of the best-preserved colonial town centers in Latin America, which is also a UNESCO world heritage site.
Admittedly, I was unable to explore much of Quito during my trip, as Quito was just an overnight stopover on my way to Manta.
However, I did get the chance to stay at one of the most unique places in Quito, Hacienda Jimenita 😍.
Even though I only spent one night here, I still think about the dreamy views and the fire crackling in my room as I drifted off into much-needed sleep after a day of flying.
Hacienda Jimenita is a super cute hotel located on a nature reserve just 15 minutes from Quito’s airport. The perfect place for a stopover (though I wished I could have stayed a few days!), and a welcome getaway to rest and connect with nature.
If you are just stopping over, be sure to walk around the grounds, check out the underground tunnel, and try the breakfast. Don’t be afraid to start a fire as you go to bed. Trust me, nothing will lull you to sleep like the sounds of crackling wood and the inviting warmth of a fire.
I had an amazing stay simply taking it all in, walking the grounds, and enjoying a morning coffee on my balcony overlooking the valley below and the city of Quito off in the distance.
Once it was time to leave, a quick 15-minute drive to the airport meant that I got to maximize my time relaxing instead of sitting around at the airport or in a long car ride.
Off To Manta
Flying in Ecuador is so much easier than in the U.S., at least in my experience. Quito Airport was quick and efficient and much more relaxed than airports back home.
I was through security in less than 5 minutes and in the lounge in another 5. Priority Pass members will get easy access to the super comfy lounge on site.
Within just a few hours I had transitioned from my cozy cabin overlooking Quito to the luxurious Ora Verde Manta hotel in Manta, Ecuador. The flight from Quito was only about an hour and was easy flying.
One thing I loved about the Ora Verde Manta hotel was how close it was to everything I needed while in Manta. It sat right across the street from the mall and was located on a massive beach for early morning walks.
The hotel itself was super comfortable, and I loved waking up early to get some work done while the sun rose, giving a wonderful view of the pool and the beach.
If you are going to make the effort to get to Manta, you should definitely drive to nearby Manabí for some of the best food you’ve had in your life!
We were lucky enough to check out Iche, a school that is actively bringing Ecuadorian cuisine to the world by training its students to blend age-old traditions with modern cooking.
Unfortunately the day we decided to tour, the restaurant itself wasn’t operating, but we were lucky enough to drive to a nearby restaurant run by one of Iche’s first graduates.
When I tell you the food was worth all the effort it took to travel there, I mean it!
We ate at a restaurant called Seleny, named after its amazing chef, Seleny Bermúdez. We were able to join in on some of the fun as she cooked a delicious meal using a centuries-old technique and cooking surface — the Manabí stove.
To be completely honest, I have no idea what the names of the dishes were 😅; I just know with every bite I was contemplating a permanent move to the Manabí province!
After such an amazing meal we started to make our way back to Manta, but did stop and check out an interesting museum and landmark called Centro Civico Eloy Alfaro, as well as visit a few straw hat shops to learn more about the famous hats and how they are made.

The Road to Guayaquil
This trip was all about seeing as much of Ecuador as we could in about a week, so of course we had to visit its largest city! Guayaquil is a city of about 2.6 million people, and is a fantastic place to spend a few days.
However, we still had to get there, and the road to Guayaquil was filled with gorgeous views and fun things to explore and do. And what’s the best way to combine a gorgeous view with an exciting activity?
Paragliding.
Ecuador is full of adventurous things to do for every type of traveler, and I am not one to turn down an offer to try something new. When I learned we would have the chance to try out paragliding along the coast of Ecuador I couldn’t wait, and the experience didn’t disappoint!
If you aren’t a fan of heights I get it, I’m not super comfortable with them either. However, when something freaks me out I feel like I have to tackle it head-on, which is initially what got me into rock climbing.
But there is a big difference between climbing 80ft up a wall attached to a rope vs. strapping yourself to a parachute and soaring up hundreds of feet above the ocean! I couldn’t wait 😂.
The whole process was really simple, and you don’t need to know anything special to take to the skies. Your guide will control everything, leaving you with the lovely job of enjoying yourself and snapping photos from the sky!
Paragliding along the coast was one of the highlights of the trip, and once we landed I was already asking how long it takes to learn how to do it on your own. Bucket list item: head back to Ecuador and get certified!
No Bad Time For Wine
If you like wine, chances are you’ve had some wine from Argentina, but did you know that Ecuador also makes some delicious wines?
I didn’t, but it is definitely on my radar now. After paragliding, we made one more stop before Guayaquil at Ecuador’s finest vineyard, Bodega Dos Hemisferios.
Touring the vineyard, we learned about why the wine we were tasting had such unique flavor profiles. The microclimates of Ecuador bring out some incredible flavors in the grapes, and I am certain we will all be seeing Ecuadorian wine making its way onto the world stage over the coming years.
After our tour we had an incredible tasting with the gorgeous backdrop of the vineyard. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend an afternoon.
As if paragliding and a vineyard tour wasn’t enough, we still had another wonderful surprise waiting for us — the Oro Verde Guayaquil.
If you want to feel like a celeb checking into a luxury hotel in Ecuador, this is where you need to stay. From the second you walk into the Oro Verde you will feel like you are living life on another level.
The lobby is gorgeous and decked out in ornate trim, and everything your eyes land on feels fancy.
Once you get up to your room, you’ll feel cozy and ready for a quick refresh before heading back out for, you guessed it — more wine!
Bodega Dos Hemisferios has been so successful that they recently launched their own wine bar with tasty food right in Guayaquil, City Winery. The food is great, and we already knew the wine would be top-notch.
The Ultimate City Break
After spending much of our time along the coast or in more off-the-beaten-path corners of Ecuador, it was time to explore some of the hustle and bustle of the city.
I don’t know about you, but I like to check out museums, see some of the main landmarks, and eat amazing food whenever I travel.
In that vein, our first full day in Guayaquil was spent doing just that.
Before meeting up with our group, I decided I wanted to try out the Aerovía, a cable car line that allows you to take in the views of the city, or you can ride it all the way over to Durán. I didn’t stop off anywhere; instead, I just made a round trip to enjoy the experience.
Chances are, you will have the whole cable car to yourself, as the locals usually opt for the bus.
After taking in the views, I met back up with our group to walk along the Malecón 2000 and grab some lunch at one of the many restaurants available.
From here, we went on a chocolate tour and tried some desert after. The number one piece of advice I can give is to make sure you try the cocoa mucilage! The name isn’t super enticing, but trust me it is worth it!
The mucilage comes from the cocoa bean, but it doesn’t taste anything like chocolate. It is the white pulp that surrounds the cocoa beans, and it is so sweet!
You can get it in a ‘shake’ or try it in frozen form.
I would travel back to Ecuador just for this.
Reasons I’ll Be Visiting Again
Ecuador was incredible, and I think about my time there nearly every day. The country was gorgeous and the people were some of the most kind and welcoming I have ever met.
I cannot wait to go back!
Though I didn’t have enough time during my travels to see the whole country, it has definitely been put on my radar, and I can’t wait to explore more of the Amazon, the Galapagos, and the rest of Ecuador’s unique beauty.

Between December and March every year, hundreds of humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of the Dominican Republic — AKA the best time to sign up for a little whale watching!
If you’re in the area for a while, it’s worth taking a short drive or boat to the incredible Samana Bay. The whale capital of the Dominican, the biodiverse area should be on everyone’s bucket list.

The Weather Gods Answered
With a tropical climate and warm weather throughout the year, Punta Cana has it all. With these warm temperatures comes warm seas (Perfect for a couple of laps through the blue waters).

Punta Cana is fairly easy and reasonably priced most of the time from locations around the U.S.
As of now, Newark, New York, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale offer nonstop flights to this sunny spot year-round.
Nonstop flights from New York in the winter can be found for under $300, while some flights from Miami nonstop are under $240- WHAT A BARGAIN! It’s no wonder this is one of the most popular winter destinations for American travelers.
It’s good to always use Google flights to keep track of flights to Punta Cana because they tend to change a lot depending on the time of year you’re planning to visit.
What’s Better Than A Tropical Paradise?

One of Europe’s most traditional sunny getaways, Portugal has been reinventing itself later as a long-term destination, attracting not only vacationers but a growing number of digital nomads looking to relocate to Southern Europe.
This year alone, over 200 Digital Nomad Visas (DNVs) were issued in a matter of months, not to mention the granting of tourist visas, which most remote workers from America use to reside in Portugal temporarily for up to three months, without requiring additional documentation.
If the Lusophone country has been on your radar lately, too, and you’re unsure what to expect moving there, here are four incredible destinations to consider:
Porto
The unofficial capital of Northern Portugal, as well as the country’s second-largest city, O Porto, literally translated from Portuguese as ‘The Port’, is a major maritime port sitting along the banks of Douro River, an estuary leading to the Atlantic Ocean.
As a cultural destination, it is one of Europe’s oldest cities, having been settled as early as the 2nd century BC and a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its Baroque monuments, medieval monuments, and centuries-old wine-making tradition.
As a ‘workcation’ destination, Porto boasts a high concentration of internet cafes and coworking centers, which make the digital nomad experience a lot more seamless, as well as a Gamma+ rating, as awarded by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network.
This means it is large and self-sufficient enough to be considered an important commercial hub with a better-than-average urban infrastructure.
This makes the 1.7 million people-strong Portuense Metropolitan Area one of Europe’s most attractive cities for living in and conducting business.
Cascais
Part of the Lisbon District, which comprises the Portuguese capital as well as a number of smaller settlements, the lesser-known beachfront city of Cascais has proven to be a major point of interest for digital nomads traveling across Portugal.
First of all, it is much smaller than Lisbon proper, with just over 200,000 residents, and as it sits on the coast, as opposed to on the banks of a busy estuary, life in Cascais feels a lot more relaxed and slow-paced than in Portugal’s first city.
Offering more accessible access to the Atlantic coast, sandy beaches, and hidden coves, and being characterized by a historic center full of tiled facades and traditional Iberian houses, there are few places in Portuguese as charming and picturesque to work remotely from as Cascais.
Additionally, it is becoming increasingly more attractive as ‘nomad fatigue’ takes over Lisbon. In recent months, Lisboenses have openly decried the growing presence of remote workers and gentrified communities in the capital, with an Expresso article openly telling them to leave.
In Cascais, however, the local attitude towards nomads seems to be much friendlier.
Lagos
One of the main urban centers of the beautiful Algarve region in Southern Portugal, Lagos concentrates roughly 30,000 or so residents within its municipal boundaries, making it the smallest city on this list but by no means the least prepared for a surge in expats.
With reasonable prices – particularly in the off-season – a less chaotic city life and a hospitality industry able to cater to remote workers, either through discount accommodation rates for more extended stays or reduced prices for common workspaces, Lagos is a seriously underrated nomad hotspot.
According to NomadList, basing yourself in subtropical Lagos will cost you US$2,527 monthly, which falls within the estimated US$2,000 – US$3,000 budget of the average young digital nomad living in Southern Europe.
In terms of tourist offers, Lagos is best known for its lively nightlife, traditional Iberian architecture, food scene – due to its limited urbanization, and it’s one of the best destinations for sampling authentic Portuguese cuisine – and golden-sand beaches.
Fortunately for American nomads, now they can fly nonstop to the Algarve as flights between the United States and the region are set to launchfor the first time.
Madeira
The only destination that is not located on the Portuguese mainland, the autonomous archipelago of Madeira lies off the coast of Northwestern Africa, but it is still part of Portugal, and thus just as safe, developed, and well-equipped as any other entry on this list.
The main island is home to Funchal, a compact, gorgeous capital famous for its cobbled historic quarter, dating back to the early 16th century, fast-developing marina, bounded by luxurious hotels and resort spas on one side, and the Atlantic on the other, and abundance of green spaces.
Funchal is your best bet at a comfortable ‘nomad’ life in Madeira, as it has the best infrastructure, the highest concentration of work-friendly spots, and more affordable accommodation options compared to smaller towns on the main island, or the smaller, more isolated island of Porto Santo.
Madeira is also a winter sun destination, connected to mainland Portugal, as well as wider Europe by nonstop flights year-round, though frequency is particularly accentuated in the colder months, and they even host direct flights from the States, making it incredibly easy to reach.
You Can Stay In Portugal Visa-Free For 3 Months
As stated in the introduction, in order to work permanently from Portugal as a digital nomad, you must apply for the relevant visa and satisfy all of the criteria set out by Portuguese authorities.
Alternatively, as an American citizen, you may enter Portugal for up to 90 days out of any 180-day period as a visitor, visa-free, provided the intention of your visit is not to carry out paid work for a Portugal-based company or, of course, reside in the country illegally.
This means you will be entering Portugal as a short-term tourist, and you will be required to leave Portugal – and the Schengen territories as a whole – once the 90 days are up, for at least a further 90 days.

One of the reasons that St. Kitts remains an underrated tourist destination for Americans is because there are not many nonstop flights available from the United States.
However, JetBlue launched a brand-new route this week from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport in Basseterre, St. Kitts.
The flights will be thrice weekly on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
This makes getting to St. Kitts easier than ever before, as it’s the first city in the Northeast to get a direct flight to St. Kitts. Nonstop flights are also available from Charlotte and Miami on American Airlines and Atlanta on Delta Air Lines.
2. The Biggest Cruise Season Yet
If you don’t want to commit to flying to St. Kitts and staying on the island, it’s also now easier than ever to visit the island on a Caribbean cruise and get a taste of what St. Kitts has to offer.

More often than not, big cities hold a bad reputation amongst most solo travelers due to their immense populations – but what if this was actually an advantage?
While it’s important to exercise caution anywhere in the world, sometimes more people = a greater chance to meet others while traveling alone.
There’s nothing worse as a solo traveler than walking around desolate streets at night, but in the city that never sleeps, that’s never an issue!
There are of course a few parts of the city I’d personally avoid, but for the most part people will always be around, and police presence is high (which provides a level of comfort).
I couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions as I pulled up to the concrete jungle for the umpteenth time. New York is a creative escape, a bustling metropolis, and believe it or not, one of the best cities in the U.S. for solo travel – here’s why.

It really is the ideal spot to base yourself in New York if you’re looking to be in the hustle and bustle.
Judgement-Free Zone
As a Brit living in the U.S., I often struggle with being a ‘tourist in my own country.’ Unlike Europe, where solo travelers are a dime a dozen, the U.S. hasn’t fully caught onto the solo travel trend quite as much just yet.
While it’s certainly more prevalent than in the past, hostels and dining alone still aren’t super common in all places. A city where anything goes, New York really has it all. With diverse neighborhoods, cultures, and people, you’ll never feel out of place here.
In a city where it’s very common to see Power Rangers or Cowboys strolling through Times Square, do you think anyone would really judge you for eating a meal alone?
