When you are lucky enough to be a digital nomad, you get to spend your time in some pretty epic destinations around the globe. When you are a digital nomad who also happens to be a travel writer, then you really are expected to explore many diverse regions and know the best places.

Therefore, ask any experienced traveler as to which places they love the most, and the answers can be quite varied and interesting.

I have not traveled nearly as much as many other people, only clocking in about 55 countries so far, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a list of favorites to recommend when people ask.

One city that always comes to mind when I am asked about places I love is the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) capital city of Sarajevo.

And it seems I am not the only one to discover the charm of this history and culture-packed city, as it’s been seeing a record number of tourists this year and shows no signs of slowing down.

Here Are 5 Reasons Why I Love Sarajevo:

Budget Friendly

The countries of the Balkan region are known to be cheap destinations, and Bosnia and Herzegovina is no exception.

Traveling around the country and even in the capital city of Sarajevo is much cheaper than other European destinations and far less expensive than traveling around the UK or the U.S. In fact, for example, eating at a restaurant in Sarajevo is nearly 60% cheaper than in the States.

Airbnbs in the city are extremely cheap, and walking around most places is the best option, meaning you don’t need to spend much money on transportation as well. Getting to Sarajevo is easiest by bus or train from nearby countries, and the airport connects you to the U.S. with a quick stop in Istanbul or via low-cost carrier throughout other European cities.

Safe and Welcoming

The country of Bosnia and Herzegovina is known to be welcoming to tourists and is happy to have them visit their country to experience all there is to enjoy.

While the country (and Sarajevo especially) went through a very dark period and a world-famous siege, the people here now are happy and open, and it’s evident in how they live their lives.

Sarajevo is a safe city. I explored day and night and never felt the slightest sense of danger or ill at ease. The country ranks an impressive 61st place worldwide on the 2023 Global Peace Index, and travelers should not have any issues here.

Food, Architecture, And Scenery

Like all Balkan food, Bosnia has some fantastic cuisine at super low prices. Not to mention the coffee, which has to be seen and tasted to be believed. Don’t miss exploring the market and trying everything you can find, from Balkan favorites such as cevapi and burek, to more specialty dishes such as begova corba (chicken & veg soup) and the meat stew of Bosanski lonac.

Walking around the city and taking in the quirky architecture is a great way to soak up the vibe, one building that is stunning is the old brewery, don’t miss a chance to stop in there and have a look.

The scenery around the city is mesmerizing, and you can’t forget to get up into the nearby Trebević mountain area to explore the abandoned bobsled track, and even enjoy the cable car for some epic views.

Packed With History

When you mention Sarajevo to anyone, the first thing that likely comes to mind is the siege that took place in the 1990s. This tragic event is one that really should be understood to its fullest, and a walking tour is a great way to familiarize yourself with the horrors of this time.

Any good walking tour will also take you to the tunnel, which was dug under the airport’s runway to supply the people with goods while the city was shut off.

Aside from the horrific history of the siege, Sarajevo is important for other historical reasons. Keep your eyes out for famous sites such as the Sarajevo roses found in the buildings and sidewalks and The Latin Bridge, famous for being the site where World War I started.

Epic Day Trips

Sarajevo is fantastic, and spending a week or more there is easy to do, but if you find yourself wanting to see more of the absolutely wonderful country of Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are many options from the city.

One super popular trip is a 2-hour train ride to the postcard-perfect Mostar, where you can wander the old town and Cath the daring divers jump from dizzying heights into the shallow waters below.

Aside from Mostar, popular day trips from Sarajevo include beautiful places such as Travnik, Kravica Waterfalls, Srebrenica, Jajce, and Konjic.

Now more than ever, travelers are seeking a more meaningful experience rather than just another beach vacay, and they are often not hesitant about shelling out the dough if that means identifying value in a product or when they are sure they will get a high degree of satisfaction from it.

Having hit a peak of 97% in 2021, Los Cabos’ satisfaction rates are among the highest in Mexico, with visitors commending the service offered at hotels, the highly developed infrastructure and applauding the resort zone’s tight surveillance and safety.

Unlike the Mexican Caribbean, which has taken a markedly different approach in promoting affordable all-inclusive packages over the years, Cabo’s eyed big spenders.

A Favorite Among Celebrities

Tourists are no strangers to flying semi-private jets when taking trips to Cabo, as airfares are not as prohibitive as one might think, and unlike the average Cancun visitor, who wants to enjoy their time in the sun without breaking the bank, Cabo’s clientele is actively looking for deluxe experiences.

In recent years, authorities have invested heavily in converting Cabo from a mere resort town into a luxurious wellness capital of Latin America, so much so that it now boasts the highest concentration of five-star spa resorts anywhere in the subcontinent.

From frequent celebrity guests like Britney Spears and Jamie Foxx to anonymous vacationers from California who put aside some money every month and count down the days to live it up in Cabo at the end of the year, it has become Mexico’s number-one luxury destination.

Cabo has the distinction of being home to the second-best hotel in the world in Waldorf Astoria, as selected by the prestigious French publication La Liste.

Overall, it features six times on the list, with other noteworthy entries including Montage Los Cabos, straddling the Pacific, and the landmark Grand Velas, an award-winning listing renowned for its architecture and impressive amenities.

As Cascajares says, ‘the number of people interested in a luxurious vacation in the area will keep increasing in the following years’.

Yet another recent report has showed more than one in ten tourists traveling to Cabo are devoted foodies, as the Mexican Capes are known all over Mexico for their upscale restaurants and unique blends of indigenous Mexican cuisine and modern influences.

Other five-star experiences include well-frequented nightclubs, with better-selected customers than the Mexican Caribbean’s jungle parties, and yacht tours, with a growing number of guests renting private boats to explore natural attractions off the mainland, such as the famous Arcos.

Cabo is not only trendy: it is the guarantee of a well-spent, truly relaxing, luxurious vacation.

Formerly known as Tenedos, this tiny island home to approximately 500 residents will blow you away with how stunning it is, from the crystal blue waters and laid-back vibes to charming, colorful streets.

In particular, Sulubahçe Beach is what makes it feel as if you are in a remote paradise reminiscent of The Maldives.

We’ve all stepped into the ocean to make sure it passes the test of being able to see our feet. Sulubahçe Beach far exceeds the test, and despite being unable to swim most days due to cold waters, the scenery is immaculate.

It will easily become one of your all-time favorite beaches.

A Fairy-tale Island

Not only is the scenery some of the best you could ever imagine, but the small-town charm is to die for. Comparable to Greece, visitors will find themselves oohing and ahhing on every street.

In fact, it was a Greek island until the 1920s when it joined the Turkish Republic. Greece’s loss is Turkiye’s gain, where locals have been flocking for sunny days for over a century now.

It is estimated roughly a million Turkish people visit during the summer since it is so easy and affordable ($30 ferry) to reach from mainland Turkey, which obviously means it’s easy for you too once you fly in.

It’s no mystery why locals love it, whether it’s cozy cafes, vibrant storybook houses, or the timeless cobblestone streets we have all pictured in our minds for our dream vacay.

That’s why recent visitors have dubbed it a ‘fairy-tale island’. Not to mention, the extremely affordable hotels are often as low as $40 per night.

Even though Bozcaada feels like a Greek island, the Turkish currency (lira) tends to give tourists more bang for their buck.

A Place To Indulge

Less money spent on hotels gives you more money for experiences. Of course, you could see one of the most well-preserved castles in Turkiye (Bozcaada Kalesti), or you could spend your day indulging in amazing Greek and Turkish cuisine and local wine.

The choice is yours, but when you’re in a destination that mixes 2 delicious cuisines, it’s hard to pass up, especially when you can sit on a patio and take in the vast scenery all while pleasing your tastebuds.

Most of the cuisine you will find is Greek, yet there are some Turkish dishes here and there. However, wine selection remains strictly Turkish as it’s produced locally in Bozcaada from a variety of grapes.

Your palate will not be disappointed spending your day indulging in the finer things in life. The island may be small, but it’s home to many vineyards and restaurants with both unforgettable food and unmatched scenery.

Why These 2 Southeast Asian Destinations Are My Favorite For Solo Travel

We all have our favorite travel spots – places that are etched into our hearts for one reason or another and places that we will always return to throughout our lives.

Two of my all-time favorite destinations as a solo traveler are in Thailand. However, I actually put off traveling to this popular Southeast Asian nation for quite some time.

I had a preconceived idea of what it was like, and I saw it as a bit too cliched to be worthy of my time and money.

However, from the moment I was hit with that warm blast of humid air when I stepped off the plane at Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport, my love affair had already started to be written.

A Travel Icon

Before the pandemic, Thailand regularly ranked in the top 10 most visited countries in the world – in 2019 it attracted a record of almost 40 million international tourists.

It’s that popular for a reason – it’s a land of incredibly friendly people, amazing weather, unbelievably beautiful beaches, and fascinating history and culture.

It also has one of the most exciting and delicious cuisines in the world (it’s not all spicy) and is still relatively cheap to visit despite its popularity.

Now that travel to Thailand is back to business as usual, I wanted to share two of my favorite solo travel destinations in the country that will always have a place in my heart.

Bangkok

It would be easy to dismiss Bangkok as simply the entry point to Thailand and not worth spending time to explore on its own merit.

But this mega metropolis is a very intoxicating place despite the hustle and bustle of its nearly 10 million inhabitants.

As a solo traveler, there’s no shortage of accommodation options, from cheap and cheerful hostels around the city’s Khao San Road party district through to serviced apartments and hotels of all shapes and sizes.

The sheer scale of Bangkok means there is something for every budget and taste, and it’s not unreasonable to expect to pay as little as $30 for a room.

Food and drink are also very affordable, with street food being the obvious choice to keep the costs down, costing as little as $2.

Public transport is cheap and easy in Bangkok, whether you jump into a tuk-tuk or take the metro.

It may be an urban jungle that appears chaotic, but it’s easy to work your way around, and there are almost endless hidden gems to explore.

My three things not to miss in Bangkok:

1. Bangkokian Museum

A free museum based in three restored heritage houses in the Silom district of the city that showcases what life was like for the middle and upper classes in Bangkok in the 1940s.

It’s a quieter alternative to the famous Jim Thompson House Museum.

2. Mahanakhon Sky Walk

Located in the heart of the city, the Mahanakhon Sky Walk offers incredible 360-degree views of the city from its staggered observation deck and glass-floored terrace, which is over 1,000 feet above the city streets below.

It costs about $25 to get a ticket to go up, but if you do it at sunset or even at night, you’ll be solidly rewarded.

3. Wat Suthatthepwararam Ratchaworamahawihan

While the Grand Palace and the Golden Mount may steal a lot of the limelight, this slightly quieter temple is a nice place to get a feel for Thailand and its rich Buddhist culture.

Located next to the famous giant swing, Wat Suthat boasts intricate Southeast Asian architecture, impressive murals, and many ornate golden Buddha statues.

Chiang Mai

Located in the far north of Thailand, surrounded by majestic mountains and beautiful countryside, Chiang Mai is a change of pace from Bangkok.

That said, there’s still plenty of great nightlife in the city for those who seek it out – jump aboard one of the famous red truck taxis and see where the night takes you.

Food and accommodation are also cheap here, and modern developments mean that there’s no shortage of stylish apartments to choose from if you decide to base yourself in Chiang Mai for a while.

Littered with enchanting temples, pretty gardens, and a thriving art scene, the city itself can keep you entertained for at least a week before you even think about heading out into some of the amazing National Parks and natural beauty that surround it.

My three things not to miss in Chiang Mai:

1. Cycling Tour

I won’t single out any one company, but Chiang Mai has a host of organizations that offer guided cycling tours around the area.

On two wheels, you’ll visit street food markets in the suburbs, see unknown temples, and ride past rice fields. Don’t worry, the whole area is located in a very flat valley, so the riding is easy.

2. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

The Thailand Tourism Authority says exactly what I need to say about this: “Locals would say you haven’t really gone to Chiang Mai unless you’ve been to Wat Phratat doi Suthep.”

Yes, it is touristy, but it’s worth the effort. This super impressive temple is about 6 miles outside the city (you can catch local buses between 5am and 5pm) and sits atop a mountain that gives unbeatable views back to the city.

3. A Real Thai Massage

Chiang Mai is one of the best places to get an authentic Thai massage that will have your back feeling 20 years younger.

My personal favorite is the Lila Thai Massage chain, which employs women who are rehabilitating after spending time in prison – it gives them a purpose and a career to help rebuild their lives again.

The European capitals of Athens, Rome, Madrid, and Lisbon are all incredible to visit any time of year, but winter is the best.

If you have read anything about summer travel this year, you might already know that these cities have also seen record crowds recently.

This past summer, for example, Europe and especially the cities of Athens and Rome saw jam-packed tourist sites, not to mention tourists misbehaving, such as climbing statues and defacing ancient property.

So, for those of you who skipped a trip to these cities this summer, well done.

Why not enjoy them in the winter instead, when you are much less likely to be elbow-to-elbow with others?

Note: Christmas and New Year’s will be busy in all these cities, yet the endless festivities and beautiful decorations might lure you here anyway. Aside from the holiday itself, don’t forget about Europe’s famed Christmas markets, which are bustling in these cities throughout December.

If you don’t mind crowds and higher prices, then the holiday time might be for you, but if you are looking for quieter and cheaper times, skip this time frame and head to these cities after the New Year.

Athens

As the most popular tourist destination in Greece, Athens sees millions of visitors each year. While summer is hot and unbearably crowded, once the weather starts to cool down, it becomes one of the country’s best places to visit.

Remember that the weather can be unpredictable, with December having an average daily temperature of 54 degrees. As long as you plan accordingly, then you can visit the vast array of important artifacts and sites here and warm up with a steaming helping of Greek food when done. Winter is mostly the locals here, and aside from Christmastime, there are few other visitors.

And if you are looking for an awesome day trip take the train about 4 hours north to experience the stunning Meteora, where the monasteries sit on rocks jutting up into the sky.

Rome

Italy’s capital, Rome, lies in the center of the country, but the climate is often representative more of the south than the north. With a climate that is generally mild, winter is often sunny and clear, and although it can be a bit crisp, you will find that walking around to visit all the sites will warm you up in no time.

Aside from the Christmas week, Rome is pretty quiet in the winter. Typically jam-packed places such as the Vatican, Trevi Fountain, The Spanish Steps, and the Colosseum see much fewer visitors in the winter, giving you lots more space to spread out and explore.

A visit to Rome in the winter is enjoyable, and once that winter sun dips beyond the horizon, set yourself up in some wonderful restaurant to enjoy soul-warming pasta and pizzas and warm up with some wine.

Lisbon

Portugal’s trendy capital city of Lisbon is another city that is a great place to check out in the colder winter months. While you might get a bit of rain, bring a cute umbrella and consider it an accessory. The city’s coldest temperatures arrive in January, but even then, it’s a pleasant average of 55 degrees.

The activities here are much more enjoyable in the winter, even if you do have a bit of rain. There are a fraction of other tourists vying for the best spot for everything, so popular choices such as Tram 28 are much more fun at this time of year.

Lisbon has loads of indoor activists to take advantage of as well, including museums such as The Fado, The National Azulejo Museum, and the Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology (MAAT). Don’t forget a day trip to the charming town of Sintra, another place that is jam-packed in summer and much more calm in winter.

Madrid

First things first, in the winter you can find other destinations in Spain with much better weather than Madrid.

As the city is the highest capital on the continent, the winter weather tends to get cold, cloudy, and possibly a bit snowy. So, as long as you are prepared for the potential to see such a beautiful city with a little dusting of snow and an average temperature of around 46 degrees, you will have a great time.

Now, all that being said, you are likely to have crisp blue skies and many sunny days on a winter trip to Madrid, giving you great weather to explore the many cultural highlights of the city, and of course without the record crowds to contend with.

Take a winter stroll in the city’s Retiro Park, enjoy the Botanical Gardens, or wander the famous food markets (Mercado San Miguel is a favorite), and sit inside the endless tavernas enjoying tapas and vermouth.

Every now and then, a TV show or movie becomes so popular it starts a whole new trend in the travel industry.

Whether it’s the massive success of Frozen, which led to tourists flocking to a small town in Austria, or now where hoards of tourists are making their way to Montana due to the success of Yellowstone.

It’s easy to see why people do this since the entertainment industry is designed to allow us to escape reality.

That’s a key reason for wanting to travel in the first place, right? The unfortunate fact is no matter how hard we try to immerse ourselves in a captivating story; ultimately, we have to snap back to reality.

Plus, these destinations may not match up with your expectations since they are framed in such a way to make for a great story but are not intended to put a place on the map.

Regardless, it does happen, and Montana is the latest place to see a surge in popularity, largely in part due to entertainment influences.

Yellowstone Or Yellowstone?

When you read the word “Yellowstone”, what do you think of? Is it the massive hit TV show about the fictitious Dutton family, or is it the stunning national park millions of people flock to each year?

Either way, Montana is booming! Yellowstone the show and Yellowstone the park are both Montana-based.

In fact, it’s likely the show has helped to increase the amount of visitors to one of America’s most beautiful national parks.

That’s not the only place the show has influenced travelers to visit – it’s the whole state! Given the show’s huge success with multiple seasons to watch, Montana has seen an influx of visitors all year.

Shops all over the state have been selling cowboy hats and attire to tourists so they can look just like the Duttons on Instagram.

Common Misconceptions About Montana

It’s been reported tourists inspired by watching Yellowstone are coming to Montana and booking ‘Dude Ranches’.

While that does fit the old-fashioned, simple way of life Yellowstone projects, there are some misconceptions.

It’s hard to argue the beauty of Montana; it is gorgeous at every turn. Even the small towns have such a unique charm.

One recent dude rancher was quoted as saying, “It’s as beautiful as I thought it’d be. Why would anyone want to live anywhere else?”.

That may be a valid viewpoint, but many travelers don’t factor in brutal Montana winters. Yellowstone may depict a picture-perfect life on the ranch by cozying up at a campfire, but the allure often goes away when the frigid temps roll in.

Montana may be a great spot for fall, but winters can be rough unless you’re into hitting the slopes.

Boz Angeles

Bozeman has long been a getaway for those in the know. But now the state has become more mainstream, making one of Montana’s treasures even more popular.

So much so, the city of Bozeman has taken on the moniker of “Boz Angeles” since many west coasters have made their way here.

The charming city is often mentioned on the show and has elevated the city’s status even more. Locals are conflicted between the boost to the economy while also battling to maintain the state’s pristine beauty.

Should you choose to visit a city in Montana, Bozeman is just the place. While the population is just over 50,000, this trendy little city is worth being on your itinerary.

Outdoor Tourism Boom

Many of Yellowstone’s scenes were filmed in the summer, which showcases Montana’s magnificent scenery.

Whether it be postcard-worthy Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, or just simply taking in the views on the backroads, Montana is a sight to behold.

It would be tough to visit Montana without enjoying the great outdoors. It is nicknamed “Big Sky” after all.

Common activities are fishing, hiking, camping, and horseback riding, reminiscent of the show. Whatever you decide to do, Montana wants to remind tourists the land is seemingly untouched in many areas.

They would like to keep it that way. Wildlife encounters are also possible, so it’s best to enjoy viewing animals from a distance.

The digital nomad lifestyle is a different way of traveling that allows you to get a more complete experience of what life is like in a country compared to traditional, shorter tourism trips.

Even in countries that don’t have specific digital nomad visas, staying longer and continuing your work while you travel is a great way to dive deeper into a place.

Often, the most challenging part of this lifestyle is choosing where to go – so how does the country that just ranked best in Europe for remote work sound?

That prestigious honor belongs to the underrated Scandinavian nation of Denmark, which came out on top in the 2023 Global Remote Work Index by network access provider Nordlayer.

Countries were judged on factors including cyber safety, economic safety, social safety, and digital and physical infrastructure.

Here’s why Denmark secured the number one position and why it is one of my favorite countries in Europe:

Safe And Modern

Denmark is known for being a safe country. In fact, it ranked second in the whole world in the 2023 Global Peace Index.

Not only does the country have low levels of crime, but it’s also strong on issues such as social safety and digital and cyber security, which are important considerations for digital nomads.

Denmark is a modern country with great infrastructure – from its reliable public transport network to its widely available and stable internet connections.

It also has great healthcare, and English is very widely spoken, especially in and around the capital city of Copenhagen.

This solid infrastructure does, however, mean that Denmark is not the cheapest option when it comes to digital nomad destinations in Europe.

Hip And Trendy

Scandinavia is known for its unique style, with Denmark at the heart of that.

From the simple and striking architecture of its cities to social wellness concepts such as Hygge (a feeling of coziness), Denmark has been a trendsetter on the global stage for many years now.

And if you want to check out one of the trendiest places in this very hip country, then look no further than the Havnen district of Denmark’s capital city, Copenhagen, which was recently voted the fourth coolest neighborhood in the world by Time Out.

Its stylish waterfront cafés and bars are the perfect place to sit with a laptop and get through a couple of hours of work in style.

An Easy Place To Visit

While Denmark has no specific digital nomad visa, American citizens benefit from visa-free entry into the country for stays of up of 90 days, which gives you plenty of flexibility to stay for a few months.

As mentioned above, English is very widely spoken, which makes arranging places to stay and getting around the country very easy.

Many Danes help to improve their English by watching American movies and TV shows.

The currency used in Denmark is the Danish Krone, which at the time of writing had a conversion of about 7 Krone to US$1.

You can fly to Copenhagen airport directly from many American cities, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Something For Every Taste

Whether it’s exploring the pretty and colorful waterfront boulevard of Nyhavn in Copenhagen or taking long walks on the pristine sandy beaches in the west of Jutland, Denmark has a little of something for everyone.

The country is relatively small and can be easily traversed in four or five hours via the train network.

Here are three of my favorite surprise destinations in Denmark:

Møns Klint

For those of you who thought Denmark was flat, think again.

Tucked away in the southeast corner of the country is the Møns Klint, a dramatic white cliff face that juts up more than 400 feet above the sea below.

This four-mile stretch of impressive landscape is a great place to take in some wild nature or enjoy a picnic in warmer months.

Bornholm

A remote and beautiful island located away from the Danish mainland in the Baltic Sea, Bornholm is a fantastic place for a quiet retreat.

The island boasts cute fishing villages, iconic and historic Danish architecture, and a slow-paced way of life.

It also has great food, including what the Danish Tourism Board claims could be the world’s only Michelin-starred beach shack at Dueodde Beach.

Aarhus

This region is about a three-hour drive from Copenhagen and boasts a cultural city, some fascinating museums, and also some beautiful nature.

The Mols Bjerge National Park is a fabulous place to see in this area, as is the Djursland Peninsula.

The United States is a continent-sized country and a surprisingly diverse one at that in terms of tourist offer. From the towering skyscrapers of New York to the glitz and glamor of Los Angeles, there is something for every type of traveler.

With as many as 50 states, however, and who knows how many exciting city breaks, it’s challenging to narrow down the very best and get to the one destination that’s appealing to a majority.

Luckily, readers of Conde Nast Traveler have helped us reach a more democratic decision.

This surprising city was voted best to visit in the States, ranking higher than all other tourist favorites, from East to West:

Chicago Is The Best U.S. City

According to CN Traveler readers who participated in their yearly survey, the best city for visiting in the U.S. is Chicago, Illinois.

Though it is a city best known for boasting great connectivity to other global destinations through its busy O’Hare International Airport, which officially serves as an intermediate stop for many Americans going abroad, Chicago is so much more than a mere transit hub.

Topping the CN Traveler list ‘yet again‘, it is the third-largest city in the States, home to beautiful architecture, an inspiring underground music scene, and most importantly, an amazing local cuisine.

Incredible Cuisine

Not that many American cities are renowned for their local food.

The U.S. may be a colossal state, but as it is a nation built by and for migrants, food is either heavily influenced by third cultures or directly imported from other countries, lacking the traditional aspect of it.

Chicago is no exception, as it does not have a wealth of native ingredients and dishes itself, but on the other hand, it is known for its creative take on world cuisine and numerous delicacies.

These include the Chicago-style hot dog, the Italian-inspired beef sandwich, and Chicago Barbecue.

The most iconic of them, deep-dish pizza, is baked around a steel pan, resembling an upside-down pie filled with mozzarella cheese.

Some of the best restaurants for trying deep-dish pizza include Giordano’s, with up to 9,721 impressions on TripAdvisor so far, mostly positive, Spacca Napoli Pizzeria, and Piece, a go-to spot for both sampling the unique creation and belting out songs on karaoke nights.

An Electric Nightlife

When it comes to nightlife, Chicago is probably one of the most vibrant cities in America, home to a plethora of entertainment venues, dive bars, nightclubs, and pubs, and no visit would be complete without a night out in trendy Andersonville.

Other than being a Bohemian neighborhood brimming with life after sundown, it is popular for its Swedish architecture, further proof of Chicago’s undeniable multiculturalism.

It houses the Swedish American Museum, where artifacts from Scandinavian migrant communities are exhibited, and Clark Street, a commercial zone lined by adorable antique shops, rustic-looking cafes, and heritage row buildings.

In fact, Chicago’s architectural display is of the reasons why it is so admired by outsiders.

A Fascinating Mix Of Old And New

Strolling along the Chicago River, which cuts through the heart of the city and branches out into several smaller canals, you will meet clusters upon clusters of modern skyscrapers, including the landmark, 110-storey Willis Tower.

In other parts of the city, you will also find ‘Polish Cathedrals’ – a North American architectural style, in spite of their name – evocative of the Old World, and the castle-like Chicago Water Tower, built 154 years ago, and one of the oldest-standing structures.

The best neighborhood for viewing historical buildings is the Old Town, settled by Germans in the 1850s, and a protected zone with a well-preserved Victorian-era townscape.

St Michael’s Church in the Old Town is one of the few buildings in Chicago, alongside the Water Tower, to have survived the Great Fire of 1871, responsible for destroying much of the earlier historical settlement.

If you’re the museum type and would like a deeper cultural immersion beyond just sightseeing, the Art Institute of Chicago and the lesser-known Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures are not to be missed.

Chicago’s Greatness Lies In Its Diversity

As CN Traveler points out, there are as many as 77 neighborhoods to pick from, and whether you’re a culture geek or you’re simply looking for an epic weekend getaway, rest assured Chicago will deliver.

This year, a new stunning luxury hotel also opened in a privileged location in the city center, right by the iconic Chicago Bean, with panoramic views of both the skyscraper-dotted skyline and the winding Chicago River.
