Whether it’s stopovers in amazing cities with no extra fees, free tickets to some of the world’s top rated attractions or even hotel stays, their customers will be spoiled for choice this summer…

Although entry rules have never been easier to navigate and countless destinations have reopened fully, the price of travel is skyrocketing as a result of a record-high demand. In places like Miami, hotel prices have shot up by more than 50%, making vacations not only less affordable, but even prohibitive for a majority of travelers.

Fortunately, these new flight combo deals will help ease the burden a bit:

What Are Layover Programs And Which Airlines Are Included?

While they are not everyone’s cup of tea, long layovers are a great way to tick yet another destination off the bucket list, usually for no additional costs. It is the ultimate definition of two birds, one stone, allowing connecting passengers to see all the main highlights of a city ahead of boarding their final flight.

Some destinations are, in fact, major ‘layover’ hotspots, particularly in the Middle East, where both West and East-bound routes overlap. In recent years, places like Istanbul and Dubai have gained traction as stopover hubs, mainly due to their strong connectivity and direct links to multiple cities in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa.

As these global cities rose in popularity, so did their so-called Layover Programs: the industry’s response to the needs of travelers on brief city breaks. These programs aim to make transiting airports easier, especially during interminable journeys where access to certain services is limited – and they have been revolutionizing long-haul trips since.

In case you missed this piece of news amid the spate of flight cancellations that has plagued airports lately, there are seven popular airlines offering layover programs with hefty benefits. These can range from free overnights in close proximity to the airport, to big hotel discounts and entry fee waivers for a number of tourist sites.

It may sound too good to be true, but we assure you these ‘on the house’ stopovers are very real, and they will come in quite handy now that travel is getting costlier. Ready to find out which airlines have joined the trend?

Here are the details in full:

Airlines Offering Free Hotels And Attractions

Emirates – On Dubai Routes

Emirates is ensuring customers have the best possible connection time in Dubai – even when transit times are long. Dubbing it the Dubai Connect, the luxury-loving airline has a surprisingly generous layover policy in place: all passengers transiting Dubai between 10 and 24 hours are eligible for the program, regardless of cabin class.

Emirates will continue providing the shortest possible connection, but anyone who cannot book seats on the quickest routes will be entitled to ‘complimentary hotel accommodation’, transfers, and even entry visas free of charge. Dubai Connect services can be added on eligible bookings through the ‘Manage’ section at least 24 hours before departure.

In sum, those flying Emirates and staying longer in Dubai now enjoy:
- Free hotels (5-star ones for First Class and Business passengers)
- Transfers to and from the airport
- Visa fees waived
- Access to the Dubai Connect Lounge
Free Entry Into The Country’s Top 3 Attractions

Additionally, the carrier has launched a new campaign allowing passengers who book flights through their website to obtain free tickets into the United Arab Emirate’s leading tourist attractions. These include the sky high Burj Khalifa building, the Dubai Fountain Boardwalk, both in Dubai, and Louvre Abu Dhabi, in Abu Dhabi.

In order to qualify, travelers must book flights froom July 1 through September 30, though booking dates, as well as terms and conditions, may vary by region. As reported by the Khaleej Times, once the reservation is confirmed, tickets can be requested via e-mail ([email protected]). The following are required:

Etihad Airways – On Abu Dhabi Routes

Following a pandemic-induced pause, Etihad Airways is officially relaunching its Etihad Stopovers with some ‘steep’ discounts. The scheme automatically grants Abu Dhabi-bound passengers flying with the carrier a 40% discount at a participating five-star hotel, or a one to two-night complimentary stay in a three or four-star hotel.

On top of that, Etihad is introducing its new Transit Connect. The initiative acts as an extension of Etihad Stopovers and permits guests on ‘eligible routes’ to book a complimentary hotel near Abu Dhabi International Airport for flight connections between 10 and 24 hours, similarly to their competitors. These include:
- Centro Al Manhal Abu Dhabi
- Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham
- TRYP by Wyndham Abu Dhabi
- Premier Inn Abu Dhabi Capital Centre
- Premier Inn Abu Dhabi International Airport
- Ramada Abu Dhabi Corniche*

As for the 40% discount, it can be redeemed in a total of 23 luxury properties around Abu Dhabi, including the famous Anantara Easter Mangroves, the Crowne Palza Abu Dhabi (Yas Island), Le Meridien Abu Dhabi, the Radisson Blu Yas Island Hotel, the Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, and the InterContinental.

Turkish Airlines – On Istanbul Routes

Istanbul is unarguably one of the most exciting cities on the planet. A cross-continental behemoth, this metropolis is so vast it reaches beyond the Bosphorus Strait, past Europe and deep into Asia. Even better, all of its numerous landmarks and historical sites can be explored for free with Turkish Airlines’ signature Stopover In Istanbul.

Turkey’s flag carrier lets customers book hotel stays, free of charge, when transiting Istanbul for more than 20 hours. Business Class passengers can choose from a list of five-star hotels for up to two days, while Economy Fare ticket holders may pick a four-star overnight. On the downside, visa fees and transfers are not included.

- Transits must be 20 hours long or over 20 hours
- The offer is only available for passengers transferring in Istanbul Airport (IST), on the European side of the city
- eVisa fees are not included (a requirement applying to American and Canadian citizens, but not Europeans)

In case you haven’t heard, Turkey is fully open for travel, having removed all of its Covid-related entry requirements to welcome foreigners irrespective of nationality or vaccination status (though visa restrictions still apply). Effectively, transiting Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines flight is as simple as it ever was.

Airlines Offering Luxury Hotel Discounts

Qatar – On Doha Routes

Hosting the World Cup later this year, the Middle Eastern country of Qatar is determined to leave a good first impression on foreigners (budget travelers included). Naturally, this involves boosting the attractiveness of Qatar Airways as a flag-carrier, with a massive Stopover discount that is set to make trips to Doha a lot more accessible.

Under this program, all passengers booking tickets through Qatar Airways with a minimum transit time of 12 hours in the Qatari capital will be able to book a stay in a 5-star hotel starting at only $54,00. There are three packages available, and prices vary based on hotel classification and the length of the stopover:

Once they select their package and the duration of the stopover, which can be as long as four nights with no additional airfare fees, guests are free to ‘enhance’ their journey with add-ons, such as breakfast, a Discover Doha Tour, and airport transfers. Additional fees may apply and travelers are reminded Covid entry requirements remain in place.

Airlines With ‘Free Of Charge’ Stopovers

Iberia – On Madrid Routes

Iberia may not offer free hotel stays or airport transfers like Etihad or Emirates, but its ‘Hola Madrid’ Stopover program is still incredibly popular among transiting passengers in Spain. At no additional cost to the price of tickets, passengers can spend up to 6 nights in the Spanish capital, one of Europe’s most sought-after cities.

During the long stopover, other benefits apply, including up to 40% of discount on accommodation and free public transport for two days. Fortunately for budget travelers, Madrid is not nearly as expensive as Ibiza or Palma de Mallorca, and Spain’s simplified entry rules make it an easy country to visit.

TAP Air Portugal – On Lisbon, Porto Routes

Portugal’s TAP is another airline promising long city layovers at no additional costs this summer. When booking flights through TAP connecting in mainland Portugal, tourists have the option to extend their stay for up to five days in one of two of the most popular Portuguese cities: the picturesque Lisbon or the trendy Porto.

Lisbon is Portugal’s capital and an ideal destination for food and History enthusiasts. Strolling up the city’s hilltop Alfama district, visitors can find countless bakeries serving traditional Portuguese pastries, including the world-famous pastel de nata. American Airlines Suspends 4 Popular International Routes While Cutting Flights To More U.S. Cities

Out of concern they will not be able to cope with a rising travel demand, and in order to protect other important routes, American Airlines has made the painful decision to suspend four of its most popular international flights. While two of them will be unavailable during winter only, the others were either paused indefinitely – or worse, axed forever.

As if that weren’t enough, the airline is pulling out of three U.S. cities amid a major network shake-up, unceremoniously severing vital links between smaller domestic hubs and larger airports. The first post-Covid summer may be completely restriction-free, as promised, but cancellations and travel disruption continue widespread across the industry.

American’s latest scale back is yet another proof of that:

American Drops 3 U.S. Cities From Map While Suspending A Number Of International Routes

Citing staffing constraints and, more importantly, pilot shortages, American Airlines is dropping three routes and ‘temporarily’ halting service on five others, both domestic and international. Three of those are paused indefinitely, while two are unavailable through winter 2022. Below, you will find a list of all affected destinations and their current status:

Domestic
- Charlotte, North Carolina (CLT) to Alexandria, Louisiana (AEX) – Cut
- Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Ontario, California (ONT) – Cut
- Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to El Paso, Texas (ELP) – Suspended indefinitely
- Charlotte, North Carolina (CLT) to Sioux Falls, South Dakota (FSD) – Suspended indefinitely
International
- Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Saint Lucia (UVF) – Cut
- Dallas/Forth Worth (DFW) to San Pedro Sula, Honduras (SAP) – Suspended indefinitely
- Philadelphia (PHL) to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (SDQ) – Suspended during winter 2022
- Philadelphia (PHL) to Santiago, Dominican Republic (STI) – Suspended during winter 2022
Judging by the airline’s recent announcements, which include new flights to Cozumel, in Mexico, and two destinations in Jamaica, the Dominican Republic no longer ranks high on their list of priority destinations right now, with a majority of American travelers set to fly to Mexico instead this summer.

Small Cities In The States Of New York And Ohio Will Have New Connectivity Problems

Dealing another heavy blow to regional airports, which are among some of the most affected by cuts and trimmed schedules during the worsening aviation crisis, American Airlines is also dropping a further three U.S. cities from their route map altogether. Effective September 7, the airline will cease serving the following hubs:
- Islip, New York (ISP)
- Ithaca, New York (ITH)
- Toledo, Ohio (TOL)
According to an American Airlines spokesperson, the company made the ‘difficult decision’ to withdraw from the three cities as it struggles with staff shortages, affecting not only them but every major airline in the U.S. at present. They have reassured customers they will ‘proactively reach out’ to them after September 7 to offer ‘alternate arrangements’.

Passengers from both Islip and Ithaca relied on the availability of intra-U.S. flights to access major networks, within the U.S. and abroad, while Toledo residents are left with no choice but to drive two hours to Cleveland when vital links are cut. Now that one of the largest airlines in America has given up on them, logistics could become a lot more complex.

Envoy Air, American’s regional affiliate, had historically connected Toledo’s Express Airport to Chicago O’Hare (ORD), one of the busiest in the States. Sadly, even after having established a strong presence in this market over many years, and offering Toledo’s only gateway into the world, American Airlines saw no other choice but to shut down all operations.

Similarly to Envoy, Piedmont Airlines provided easy links to Philadelphia (PHL) from both Tompkins International Airport, in Ithaca, and the Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip. Those will no longer be available come September 7, when the changes will be enacted and American Airlines is due to end the aforementioned service.

Toledo Is Now Effectively Cut Off From All Major Flight Networks

It’s not all bad for the New York cities, as they will remain connected to the networks of at least 4 big U.S. carriers. Southwest Airlines will continue operating in Islip, alongside Frontier and Breeze, and Ithaca still has Delta Connection and United Express as backup now that American is leaving for good. Conversely, connectivity has been seriously reduced in Toledo.

Once American Airlines halts operations in the city, ultra low-cost airline Allegiant Air will be the only airline present in the city. Flights are only available to a handful of other small U.S. hubs, such as Orlando/Sanford, Phoenix/Mesa, Punta Gorda in Florida and St Petersburg/Clearwater – we’re afraid the two-hour drive to Cleveland is the least stressful option here.

The presence of strategic route maps that benefit smaller airports is paramount for regional connectivity, something that has come under threat again as the industry seeks to readjust overambitious schedules following an unprecedented surge in passenger numbers. Unfortunately, local hubs should brace for far greater future challenges yet to come.

American Airlines Launches Flights To Barcelona As Spain Reopens For All U.S. Travelers

Following a 32-month pause, American Airlines is finally reinstating its seasonal flights to Barcelona for summer 2022. Since June 3, U.S. citizens have been able to fly nonstop between Chicago and Spain’s leading tourist destination, as the American carrier opens up yet another route for Europe-bound vacationers.

A metropolitan city extremely rich in History and ideal for sightseeing, Barcelona sits on Spain’s eastern coast, being the gateway to the autonomous region of Catalonia. Even though Madrid is the number one city in Spain, Barcelona houses some of its most iconic landmarks, including La Sagrada Familia and several Gaudi monuments.

Travel Demand Is Back Now That Most Covid Rules Are Scrapped

Tourism in Europe may have come to a standstill throughout the Covid crisis, but now that the continent is opening its borders once more and dropping most entry requirements, demand for travel is shooting up dramatically. Similarly to other European nations, Spain has also eased its travel rules recently.

Once the Mediterranean hotspot signaled it was moving away from its once-strict Covid policies, American Airlines was quick to relaunch service between two of the busiest airports in the United States and Spain. This means nonstop flights to Barcelona are officially back to Chicago O’Hare International (ORD), just in time for summer.

The last time American offered service on this route had been October 2019, prior to Covid being declared a pandemic in early 2020. While the virus was yet to be controlled, and more disruptive variants kept surging, the route remained unavailable. For two consecutive summers, American Airlines customers based in Chicago were unable to reach Barcelona directly.

That is no longer the case.

American Airlines Ends Two Year Hiatus As Barcelona Route Is Relaunched

The hiatus ended last Friday (3) when American resumed operations on its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, carrying 234 passengers. Similarly to pre-pandemic summers, the Chicago-Barcelona flights will run through October 29, 2022, when the summer/fall tourist season ends in Spain and Europe on an extent.

The AA40 flight leaves Chicago (ORD) at 17:35, arriving to Barcelona (BCN) the following day at 9:00, on a daily frequency. Returning to America, the AA41 flight departs from BCN at 11:35, landing in ORD at 14:35 local time, also daily. Depending on date selection and seating, one-way Economy tickets can range between USD 823.59 and USD 2.819,25.

Besides Chicago, American is also offering flights to Barcelona from 3 other U.S. hubs, including Miami (MIA), New York (JFK), and Philadelphia (PHL). On top of that, the carrier operates on five other routes to Madrid, Spain’s capital: those flights leave from Charlotte (CLT), Dallas (DFW), MIA, JFK and PHL. Frequency is daily in all of them.

Can Americans Visit Spain Restriction-Free?

All Americans are eligible to visit Spain, albeit with different requirements based on vaccination.

The fully immunized are no longer subject to pre-departure testing when boarding a flight to Spain, but the non-vaccinated remain subject to presenting either a negative PCR test result issued less than 72 hours before arrival, or a negative Rapid Antigen (24 hours).

Irrespective of vaccination, U.S. citizens do not have to enter mandatory quarantine or undergo further testing when arriving to Spain. Additionally, Spanish authorities no longer require proof of vaccination to enter enclosed spaces, such as restaurants, travel on public transportation, or visit cultural venues.

Once they are in, all are welcome to explore the Iberian Peninsula’s leading nation hassle-free.

While it has eased its strict Covid-era entry protocols, now allowing the unvaccinated to enter again by presenting negative tests, Spain has refused to drop the mask rule across public transport, including planes. This means mask usage is still necessary when riding on city buses, intercity trains, and when flying within Spain.

What Are Some Of Barcelona’s Main Attractions?

Barcelona is an open air museum and one of Europe’s oldest cities. An intricate maze of narrow streets full of color and countless historical monuments. Housing the impressive Sagrada Familia, which will soon be finished after 144 years, the 13th century Barcelona Cathedral, and the picturesque Latin Quarter, it has enough sights to keep tourists busy for days on end.

Close to Barcelona, popular day trips include visits to the Costa Brava, where charming seaside towns can be found along Catalonia’s Mediterranean coast, the medieval cities of Girona and Lleida, and even the small Catalan-speaking nation of Andorra, which borders Spain and France.

Luckily, all these wonders are now only an 8-hour flight away from the U.S. with American Airlines.

Airlines Rally Together Against Testing Rule To Enter U.S.

Several different airlines across the country have rallied together in an effort to fight against the Covid-19 testing rule that’s currently required to enter the country via air. Despite several countries around the world either considerably easing or removing their Covid-19 related entry requirements, the U.S. has yet to do so. Even though its nearby neighbors Canada and Mexico do not requiring testing, the U.S. has stood firm on the rule and airlines in the country are not happy.

With all signs pointing towards a busy summer of travel – despite the issues the industry is facing – as it stands it will be American travelers returning home who’ll be out of luck and out of pocket regarding the current testing rules. Here’s a look at what the airlines have had to say about the current Covid-19 testing rules, why they feel they have to go and what steps they’ve taken to get them changed.

Airlines Challenge Testing Requirements – Information For Travelers

According to the CDC, travelers who are flying into the United States – regardless of their vaccination status or their citizenship – must take a viral Covid-19 viral test no more than 1 day before their flight. Alternatively, travelers may also show proof of recovery from Covid-19 in the form of a positive test result taken no more than 90 days before the flight’s departure and a letter from a licensed healthcare provider or a public health official stating that they are cleared to travel.

Whereas once this was the norm in countries across the world at the height of the pandemic, many countries have now removed such a requirement – leaving the United States in the travel dark ages when it comes to entry requirements. However, major airlines across the country are fighting to get the rule overturned to make entry into the country much easier for travelers.

The United States’ testing rules were described by American Airlines Chief Executive Robert Isom as “nonsensical” – and he has a point. Isom pointed out the fact that the Boston Red Sox baseball team flew to Toronto to play a game, yet rode a bus home to avoid the testing requirements, with those who cross the land border not needing to take a Covid-19 test like those who fly into the US.

Isom, who pleaded his case with politicians during the week, also highlighted the negative impact that the rule was having on US tourism. Currently, international travel figures in the US are down 14% compared to pre-pandemic levels, with Americans worried about testing positive and becoming stranded abroad. He also stated that 75% of the countries currently served by American do not have testing requirements.

Delta were also amongst the airlines criticizing the current policy, with Chief Executive Ed Bastian highlighting the fact that 44 of 50 countries the airline serves do not require testing. Bastian stated that removing the policy would result in a travel boom. He said:

“We know it will help induce and incent travelers to go abroad, bring more commerce in, more business in so hopefully they will get it done soon.”

Airlines for America, a trade association and lobbying group that represents major North American airlines, also met with a deputy White House Covid-19 coordinator Tuesday in a bid to try and get the testing rules reversed. Whilst the government hasn’t yet given any indication that the requirement will be dropped, travelers will be hoping that the constant pressure on all sides will lead to changes sooner rather than later.

United Airlines Is Taking More Aggressive Action To Stop Rising Air Fares

In order to stop what is proving to be an unprecedented, and even disruptive, rise in air fares, United Airlines is ready to take more aggressive action to mitigate the impacts of the 2022 aviation crisis. Now, they are calling for an industry-wide investment in sustainable aviation fuel and advocating for an end to America’s dependence on foreign oil.

Flight tickets have skyrocketed as fuel is built into the price, and ironically, just when international travel finally resumed following two years of Covid restrictions. Airlines need the commodity to power their jets, and it is getting costlier across the United States, leading air fares to become more expensive as a consequence. At times, even prohibitively expensive.

United believes it’s time to address the issue and has offered some solutions:

The Airline Wants Aggressive Policy Change On U.S. Fuel Policy

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, fuel prices shot up worldwide to 14-year highs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of flying has increased by 18.6% month-over-month, meaning that, due to fuel having essentially doubled in price in recent months, Americans are now less likely to be able to afford international, or even domestic trips.

Unsurprisingly, the rising air fares are not only a concern for customers who are eager to go on a vacation after two endless years of travel restrictions: airlines like United are also struggling to manage with the jet fuel hike. According to CCO Josh Earnest, the single most important reason behind the phenomenon is the cost of jet fuel.

Earnest noted Americans want to travel again and high travel demand is back, and he is advocating for an ‘aggressive policy’ to ease costs for passengers, who may already be facing financial difficulties themselves due to the pandemic. For him, in order to alleviate the economic impact, the United States needs to lessen its dependence on foreign oil, including Russian, immediately.

10 Billion More Is Being Spent On Fuel This Year With Flight Passengers Being Directly Affected

The former Obama White House press secretary has revealed the United States is going to pay $10 billion more in fuel this year than 2019, the year preceding the pandemic. Considering costs are then passed on to customers, either through gas stations or flight tickets, traveling has inevitably gotten more expensive for everyone, including those going on road trips or flying abroad.

To put it simply, fuel prices need to be reduced with immediate effect. As Earnest inferred, ‘one of the ways that we can do that actually is investing in sustainable fuel’, something United Airlines has pioneered. Last December, they flew the first passenger jet powered with sustainable fuel only, thus paving the way for other airlines to do the same.

Using sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels can dramatically reduce air fares, as airlines would no longer rely on the U.S. Government to strike deals with foreign states to supply the commodity, or be subject to a volatile global market, only set to get worse as the crisis intensifies. In fact, United is pushing for major changes.

It is investing in a company producing jet fuel from municipal waste, and that they have been testing since 2021. Although some passengers may be wary of flying on ‘experimental’ fuel, Earnest has emphasized it is perfectly safe and operated at the expected level. If United’s investments prove successful, this might well revolutionize the aviation sector.

Staff Shortages Still Need To Be Addressed

Higher fuel costs are not the only issue facing an already-battered aviation sector lately: staff shortages are becoming all too common, as several airlines are forced to trim down their summer program due to demand outpacing the industry’s hiring rate. Over the last few weeks, we have reported extensively on the matter ourselves.

From airlines fast forwarding security clearance for new pilots, which in turn technically makes them less experienced, to countries like the U.K. bracing for a chaotic summer ahead as there are fewer border control agents (and a higher number of arrivals), the impacts of Covid as a long-term complication are only beginning to hit.

Earnest mentions a worker shortage himself, and more specifically, a lack of pilots. This year, United has an ambitious plan to fulfill its largest-ever Transatlantic expansion, including by launching non-stop flights to five brand new destinations. Shortly after announcing it, they have been forced to suspend service on some routes.

You can probably guess why, but they have also fallen victim to a chronic, industry-wide worker shortage that will take years to mend. As Earnest puts it himself, ‘the lack of pilots is an acute problem’: people can’t just be hired ‘off the street’ to become a pilot, and years of training and preparation are required in order for an aspiring pilot to graduate.

Luckily, United is at least attempting to tackle yet this problem by training up to 500 new pilots each year. According to Earnest, this will give the airline an opportunity to ‘diversify the cockpit’ and open up career paths to people that ‘historically have not had that opportunity’. This seems to suggest United Airlines is promoting more affirmative action policies.

By reducing the impact on its workforce and finding cheaper alternatives for fuel, United Airlines is trying to keep the crisis from aggravating further by nipping it in the bud. After all, as the Business Insider affirms, the price of jet fuel is the ‘second biggest expense’ for airlines… Behind only labor. In sum, if airlines want to improve customer satisfaction, they will have to act more decisively.

Canadian Airlines Announce New International And Domestic Flight Routes

Airlines are ramping up flights to new destinations around the world, and Canadian airlines are no different.

This week, the major Canada-based airlines WestJet and Air Transat announced the launch of some inaugural nonstop routes to European destinations. The new flights include services to Rome, Amsterdam, and London’s Gatwick International Airport. We’ve got all the information for you below.

WestJet’s New Route Between Calgary And Rome

Are you living in western Canada and dreaming of Italy this summer? If so, you’ll be happy to hear that WestJet’s home city of Calgary is now better connected to Europe with the launch of the new flight route between Calgary and Rome on Saturday, May 7th.

The route was originally scheduled to launch in May of 2020 but was suspended due to the pandemic.

“With its rich history and culture, it is no surprise that our guests are eager to visit Rome. We are thrilled to provide Western Canadians with increased connectivity to this incredible city. We are also excited to bring guests from Rome to visit Canada and assist with the recovery of Canada’s vital tourism industry,” said Angela Avery, WestJet’s Executive Vice President of External Affairs at the launch of the new flight.

The direct connection between Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Rome-Fiumicino International Airport (FCO) with WestJet is currently scheduled to operate until November 4, 2022 and will resume on March 16, 2023.

At this time, nonstop flights between the two destinations are available two times per week. You can check WestJet’s homepage for more details.

Italy has also been dropping some of its entry requirements for travelers, so visiting the country is much easier than its been compared to the previous two years.

Air Transat Launches New Routes To Amsterdam And London

Just in time for the summer tourist season (and due to traveler demand), Air Transat has launched a new direct flight service between Montreal and Amsterdam.

This inaugural route on the popular vacation airline is the first of its kind in Canada, with Air Transat being the only Canadian-based passenger flight carrier to offer nonstop service to these two destinations.

Flights will operate on a new, more eco-friendly plane – the new-generation Airbus A321neoLR, which is 15% more fuel-efficient than other passenger carriers.

This new flight launch means that Air Transat now offers nonstop services from Toronto and Montreal to the Dutch capital city. Flights will operate three times per week, and are currently scheduled until mid-October in accordance with the high travel season.

The airline also launched another inaugural flight route this week between Quebec City (YQB) and London’s Gatwick Airport (LGW), with direct weekly flights available until late September on the airline. This new route marks the second direct connection between Quebec City and Europe on Air Transat, the other one being QC City to Paris, France.

Air Transat Ramping Up More Flights For Summer 2022

The Canadian vacation airline is also set to relaunch 25 of its routes to Europe by June 2022. Air Transat currently offers six flight routes between Canada and Europe.

With the gradual restart for summer 2022, Air Transat will provide flight services to 15 destinations throughout Europe from Toronto Pearson Airport. Destinations will include Dublin, Lisbon, Glasgow, Zagreb, and more.

16 European destinations will also be available from Montreal, including nonstop flights to Athens, Brussels, Madrid, as well as a number of destinations throughout France.

Swoop, Air North Launch New Domestic Routes

On top of the resumption of international routes to Europe from Canada, ultra-low-cost carrier Swoop has launched its first-ever service from Hamilton to New Brunswick. Flights are currently scheduled four times per week for summer 2022.

This new route is one of 11 inaugural routes that will be available on Swoop to Canada’s East Coast, in an effort to boost tourism to the region after an over two-year closure.

Southwest Airlines Announced New Changes And Service Improvements

The carrier will upgrade its wifi service, add more USB chargers, increase carry-on space, and provide more options for passengers

The American airline Southwest announced several new changes and service improvements on Wednesday in a press release. The carrier will develop a 5-year plan to optimize customer experience and will invest over two billion dollars to reach all goals.

Southwest Airlines—based in Texas— has recently been awarded the 2022 J.D. Power Award for “Highest Customer Satisfaction” in North America among economy carriers, but its commitment to offer a better service does not rest, according to its most recent statement.

The company published its main changes and goals to modernize customer experience and promised to enhance wifi connectivity onboard, install better technology for power outlets, offer more space for carry-on items, include more entertainment options, enable new self-service features, and will launch a new fare category, the Wanna Get Away Plus.

Bob Jordan, Chief Executive Officer, said: “You can never stop working to get better, and as our beloved Founder Herb famously said, ‘If you rest on your laurels, you’ll get a thorn in your butt!’ We have a long and proud history of offering Legendary Customer Service and warm Hospitality, and we have bold plans and significant investments to modernize and enhance the Southwest Experience.”

The CEO also added: “As we continue to welcome back loyal Customers and win new ones, these initiatives, combined with the best People in the industry, support our Purpose of connecting People to what’s most important in their lives through friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel.”

The low-cost carrier has been expanding its network during the past few weeks, offering routes in the United States and abroad, and now they will also focus on new service improvements.

More About The New Changes

Southwest Airlines stated that they want to offer their clients a better service and that they also listen to complaints and suggestions. Jordan said: “We listen to our customers, and their insights help us deliver on and exceed their expectations.” These are the main new changes and updates:

Better Wifi

The low-cost carrier understands that connectivity has become more important for its customers, and will be upgrading its wifi equipment on their current fleet with provider Anuvu and implementing hardware with 10 times better bandwidth and speed.

This service is already being tested on some routes, and the carrier also announced a collaboration with Viasat, an industry-leading satellite connectivity provider, for higher quality internet and live television.

Useful USB-Chargers

The carrier will install USB-A and USB-C power ports on every seat, without compromising legroom. Tony Roach, Southwest’s Vice President of Customer Experience and Customer Relations, said: “The ability to keep your devices charged while you are connected inflight is a request that we’ve heard consistently in ongoing conversations with our customers.”

Wanna Get Away Plus

This new fare will become available later this month and will bring more flexibility: the ability to transfer travel funds and make same-day seat changes on an available flight between the same origin and destination.

Larger bins

Southwest adjusting space to make more room for carry-on bags and give passengers the option to bring two free carry-on bags —size and weight limitations apply. Next year, travelers will find larger overhead bins for their personal items.

Additional Refreshments

Along with a large beverage selection, the airline will include additional seasonal options like a bloody mary mix during summer, and will also include other alcohol options like hard seltzer and rosé in September.

Lap-child features

Another feature will allow customers to add lap-child travelers when booking online. Currently, the airline also changed its self-service kiosks to allow travelers with lap children to check in.

A flight ticket and a photo ID doesn’t always guarantee you boarding on an airplane (even if you’re all ready to go with your coffee in hand).

While US airlines have a long list of guidelines to abide by, another set of standards apply to all air travelers across the country. These standards allow airlines to legally deny boarding to passengers for a multitude of different reasons.

After taking a little deep dive into the US Department of Transportation’s policies following our post on what airlines must pay you if you’re involuntarily denied boarding, we discovered some interesting facts that travelers should take note of.

Turns out, there’s a few things you can do to get yourself kicked off of a flight in the United States. Here’s the guidance for the Department of Transportation for all travelers and airlines in 2022.

Reasons Passengers Can Be Denied Boarding

There’s a few simple reasons why you may be denied boarding by an airline. The typical ones that come to mind are if you don’t make the check-in deadline or don’t have the right identification.

In those cases, it’s important to note that different airlines may have different policies and standards when it comes to re-booking you on a later flight, which is one of the many reasons why you should know the terms and conditions of the airline you’ll be traveling with. Among them, one thing to check out is an airline’s contract of carriage.

What Is A Contract Of Carriage?

Airlines around the world, including US-based airlines, each have something that’s called a “contract of carriage.” This contract of carriage is essentially a legal agreement that you consent to when buying a ticket on a passenger flight.

Every airlines contract of carriage can differ, and according to the recent guidance by the US Department of Transportation, “an airline can refuse to transport a passenger for the reasons listed in its contract of carriage, so long as the refusal is not discriminatory.”

Non-Discriminatory Reasons For Being Denied Boarding

Some of the non-discriminatory reasons airlines can deny a passenger boarding on a plane include:
- Being intoxicated or under the influence of illegal drugs.
- Attempting to interfere with the duties of a flight crew member.
- Disrupting flight operations or engaging in unruly behavior.
- Having an offensive odor that is not caused by a disability or illness.
That’s right, you could be denied boarding if the smell you’re bringing on the plane is offensive to those around you, as long as it is not linked to a personal disability or illness.

Now, onto the subject of unruly passengers. This topic has been reported on widely over the past few years, so much so that the TSA partnered with the FAA at the end of 2021 to help with removing any TSA Pre-Check privileges to passengers deemed “unruly.”

FAA regulations state that, “no person may assault, threaten, intimidate, or interfere with a crew member in the performance of the crew member’s duties aboard an aircraft being operated.”

Keep Your Travel Documents Updated

And in order to streamline the travel process, it’s important to always travel with an updated passport. With the routine processing times currently at 8-11 weeks, it’s recommended to get your passport updated at least 3-4 months before the expiration date.

As a traveler, it is your responsibility to keep all documents up to date, especially if you plan on traveling internationally.

Flair Airlines Launches 2 New Low Cost Flights To Puerto Vallarta

Great news for those who enjoy taking a break from the Canadian winter! The Canadian low-cost carrier Flair Airlines recently announced two new routes to the popular Mexican coastal city Puerto Vallarta. Services will begin in winter 2022.

The company wants to offer Canadian travelers the possibility to experience the warm weather and sandy beaches of Puerto Vallarta by the end of the year, just like the American low-cost carrier JetBlue is doing at the moment.

According to the information shared in a press release, Flair Airlines will allow more Canadian travelers to escape winter and enjoy this sunny destination with affordable tickets. Non-stop flights will connect Edmonton and Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR).

Flair Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Jones said: “We’re here to offer affordable options to Canadians, and growing our network in Mexico is an exciting step forward as we continue our international expansion.”

Jones also mentioned weather conditions: “We are looking forward to partnering with Puerto Vallarta International Airport to bring another sunny destination to our passengers. We know it will be a hot destination this winter, with temperatures averaging 30 degrees in November.”

The new services will begin on November 3 from Edmonton and November 5 from Vancouver. One-way fares will start at $99.

The company wants to position itself as Canada’s main ultra-low-cost carrier and is also currently offering travelers a special promo—until May 5— with domestic flights for $39 per service.

More Affordable Vacation Options For Canadian Travelers

Canadian families will have more affordable options to fly to Mexico. Now, along with other low-cost Canadian carriers such as Swoop—also offering flights to the Dominican Republic— Flair will be offering passengers the possibility to explore popular and exotic destinations at prices surprisingly low.

Starting in November, from Edmonton and Vancouver, Canadians can take direct flights into paradise with Flair Airlines. Myron Keehn, Vice President Air Service, Business Development, ESG and Government Relations, Edmonton International Airport, said: “Flair is bringing the fun with another non-stop Mexican destination from Edmonton International Airport.”

Keehn also added: “Puerto Vallarta and its beautiful beaches are a popular destination from Edmonton with plenty of ways to relax and enjoy a great vacation. We’re glad to have Flair headquartered at EIA and helping bring more options for low-cost travel to our communities.”

The new non-stop flights to Puerto Vallarta will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays, twice a week from Edmonton and prices start at $109. From Vancouver, the carrier announced weekly flights on Saturdays and one-way fares begin at $99.

Canadians will be able to enjoy one of the most beautiful Mexican cities in the Pacific for just about $200 round trip. They can explore the traditional villages, swim in the warm crystal clear waters of beaches like Playa Los Muertos or Playa de Oro, and have exciting adventures diving or water skiing.

Flair Airlines’ Expansion

The Canadian airline, headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, currently operates in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Flair Airlines was launched in 2017 and, according to data provided by FlightConnections they currently serve direct flights to over 50 destinations.

In Canada, the carrier’s top destinations are Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Halifax, Ottawa, and Victoria, but also serves other cities like Montreal, Abbotsford, Waterloo, Kelowna, Victoria, and Grand Prairie.

In the United States, Flair serves big cities such as New York, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, and recently became the first Canadian airline with services to Burbank airport in Los Angeles.

Flair Airlines states on its website its intention “to disrupt the monopolistic practices of Canadian airlines” and has been rapidly expanding to fulfill its mission: “We will liberate the lives of Canadians by providing affordable air travel that connects them to the people and experiences they love.”

New Flights To Cancun, Mexico

Cancun was the world’s second most popular tourist destination in 2021 behind Dubai. And during the COVID-19 pandemic—Mexico never closed. As a result, airlines from every corner of the world are starting direct flights to the region.

Not only that, Mexico was the second nation worldwide to scrap all COVID-19 entry requirements—including things like passenger locator forms, although they never had testing or vaccine requirements.

So Cancun really is the perfect destination in 2022, regardless of where you come from.

The New Flights To Cancun From The U.S.

As Cancun continues to grow in popularity for U.S. tourists, some U.S. airliners are increasing flights, including:
- Frontier Airlines – Frontier Airlines will increase their flights from Tampa to Cancun to three times per week. They will also begin flying from Houston to Cancun 4 times per week from May.
The New Flights To Cancun From Europe

Cancun has always been a popular destination for European travelers, especially British and German tourists. Therefore, it’s no shock that airliners are increasing flights to the region.
- Condor Airlines – Condor Airlines will add another weekly flight on its Frankfurt to Cancun route, From May, there will be five weekly flights instead of four.
- TUI – Popular British airliner TUI is increasing its flight frequency to Cancun. From May, travelers can fly to Cancun from Manchester, London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Bristol, Newcastle, etc. Moreover, travelers can catch direct flights to Cancun from Amsterdam and Brussels.
- Iberojet – Popular Spanish airline Iberojet began flying from Lisbon to Cancun in April; however, they will also increase their flight frequency from Madrid to Cancun in July. In addition, they’ve announced a new direct flight from Barcelona to Cancun in June.
- AirCaraïbes – French airline Air Caraibes will start its route from Paris to Cancun in October with two weekly frequencies until December, with an increase to 3 flights from December 2022.
The New Flights To Cancun From South America

Various South American airlines are increasing their flight frequency to Cancun, including:
- SKY Airlines – SKY Airlines will increase its flights from Lima to Cancun on a daily basis.
- Volaris – Volaris will start daily flights from Lima to Cancun in June.
New Flights To Isla Cozumel
- Southwest Airlines – Southwest Airlines will start flights from Denver to Cozumel in June.
- American Airlines – American Airlines will begin flights from Denver to Cozumel on Saturdays from June onwards.
- United Airlines – United Airlines will restart weekly flights from LAX to Cozumel in May.
- Suncountry – Suncountry will restart flights from Dallas to Isla Cozumel in June with two weekly flights (Thursday and Saturday.)
The COVID-19 Situation In Cancun

Cancun is recording its lowest COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. The current 7-day case average is only 9.

However, although there are no entry requirements to visit Cancun from Europe or the United States, there are still internal COVID-19 restrictions. These include mandatory masks in indoor areas. However, since Mexico, at a federal level at least, has now declared this an endemic, indoor mask rules at the state level for Quintana Roo should be ending soon.

Cancun did, however, remove the outdoor mask mandate earlier in the year.

Tips For Heading To Cancun In 2022

Travelers wishing to visit Cancun in the summer of 2022 need to book their accommodation soon. According to reports, Cancun hotels are almost fully booked in the summer, with an impressive 90% occupation.
