The world’s third most visited city will always have a special place in the hearts of American travelers – it’s an iconic, historic, and captivating place that can offer you something completely different with each visit.

From the major sights like Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, down to trendy districts such as Shoreditch, London’s popularity never seems to wane, with this spring looking no different.

Here are a few reasons why the capital of the United Kingdom remains an essential travel destination for Americans in 2024:

Accessible And Welcoming

One of the main attractions of London is that it is a super friendly and welcoming place for American travelers.

Okay, so we might have different words for certain things, and each has our own quirks and eccentricities (get used to being offered tea multiple times per day), but deep down, we are very similar, which makes traveling around the city easy.

While not a cheap city, it has become a little cheaper for Americans in recent years thanks to the decline in the value of the British Pound – it’s worth about $1.26 at the time of writing.

To make it more affordable, consider grabbing a London Pass – a special pass that gets you into multiple attractions for your chosen number of days for a set fee.

London is also an LGBTQ+-friendly destination, which you can celebrate at the BFI Flare festival from March 13-24 or at its annual Pride celebrations on June 29.

Always Something New Happening

London is a fast-paced city; there’s always a hip new place to hang out, get great food, or spend an evening in impressive surroundings.

A great example is the iconic Battersea Power Station, which is now home to an observation tower and the Arcade food hall and bar.

New shows will be opening in London’s many famous theatres in 2024 including MJ The Musical (about Michael Jackson) in Soho and the Player Kings starring Ian McKellen in Wimbledon.

Flight Choice Is Excellent

London’s major airport, Heathrow, is extremely well connected with the United States.

In fact, in a recent report, the airport revealed that its most popular flight route is to and from New York (more than 3 million passengers), with Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco also making the top 20.

And that’s just one airport – you can also fly non-stop to London into London Gatwick Airport from a wide range of American cities, including Boston, Miami, Las Vegas, Washington D.C., and Tampa.

One bit of advice when you arrive at Heathrow Airport is to give the Heathrow Express train a miss – it’s a quick way to get to central London, but it will set you back around $30 per adult, one way.

If you’re able, grab the London Underground and use the Piccadilly Line to Piccadilly Circus or Leicester Square, and you’re right in the mix. You can also use the relatively new Elizabeth Line to get into the city.

Iconic Events

Spring and summer are probably the two best months to visit London, especially due to the huge array of world-class events that take place in the city catering to all tastes.

For the green-fingered among us, there is the Chelsea Flower Show from May 21-25, while sports fans won’t want to miss quintessential events like the London Marathon (April 21) and Wimbledon (July 1-14).

And if the party vibe is what you seek, then delay your trip until August when the annual Notting Hill Carnival takes place (25-26).

A Truly International City

London can take you to almost any corner of the world in one day, which is just another reason why it’s so popular.

With every new neighborhood you explore, you can be transported to a different place and experience the flavors and cultures of different communities.

A heaven for remote workers, and that’s exactly what Colombia is.

If spending a little longer in a place while working as a digital nomad is on the cards then we may have the inspiration you need to find your next favorite location.

South America is fast emerging as one of the best places for digital nomads to explore and keep things affordable, so we’ve examined five of the cheapest major cities that can help you do just that.

Medellin, Colombia

Last year was a coming-of-age year for Medellin as a destination for solo travelers and digital nomads.

This picturesque city lies in Colombia’s beautiful Aburra Valley at the very northern part of the Andes Mountains and is known as the city of eternal spring, thanks to its mild and pleasant year-round weather.

Its popularity as a digital nomad destination means costs have slightly increased in recent years, however you should be able to get by on around $1,500 per month or less by being savvy.

The city has a great community of digital nomads, memorable nightlife, and a high number of shared working spaces – it’s also well-known for fast and reliable internet connections.

And if you’re still on the fence, then maybe Medellin being named as one of Travel Off Path’s top digital nomad destinations for 2024 in our annual awards will persuade you?

Fortaleza, Brazil

This city sits on the northern coast of Brazil’s State of Ceara and is lined with a beautiful sandy beach and is known for its very vibrant nightlife.

The city has a tropical climate that offers temperatures between 75 and 85F pretty much all year round.

It also benefits from an affordable metro system, excellent internet and remote working spaces, and some wonderful green spaces to help you unwind, such as Parque do Coco.

One thing to remember about Brazil is that it’s not the easiest place for Americans to visit anymore – you must apply for a VIVIS visitor visa to stay for up to 90 days.

There is a digital nomad visa available to apply for that can allow you to stay for up to two years if you meet the relevant criteria, such as having proof of accommodation, proof of onward flight ticket, and proof of proper travel insurance.

If you can handle that level of administration, then you’ll be rewarded with a city that costs around $1,500 per month to live in as a digital nomad.

Lima, Peru

This one may be a bit of a curveball, but with estimated living costs as a digital nomad set at around the $1,300 per month bracket, it’s easy to see why the capital of Peru is gaining in popularity.

Peru is expecting a big year for travel in 2024, helped by its weak currency compared to the U.S. Dollar, its fascinating culture, amazing cuisine, and awe-inspiring nature.

You can get a glimpse of most of these things in Lima, alongside plenty of remote working spaces and stunning views out onto the Pacific Ocean.

Buses can cost less than $1 per journey in Lima, and the city also benefits from ride apps such as Uber if you want to get somewhere in a hurry.

Peru had some issues with protests and public disturbances in 2023, but things seem to have settled now, with the U.S. Department of State rating the country at Level 2 – not the safest place on this list, but fine to travel to if you are cautious and sensible.

Bogota, Colombia

Another Colombian destination – it’s almost as if this South American treasure is one of the best places to live as a digital nomad?

For around $1,300 per month, you can stay in Colombia’s capital for up to two years.

The country’s accessible digital nomad visa only requires you to earn around $700 per month to achieve a stay of this length – and Bogota is one of the best places to do just that.

It’s a bustling city thriving with Colombian culture, and despite not having the best reputation with regards to safety, it is very cheap, has great internet, offers ideal weather, and is generally LGBTQ+-friendly.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Argentina is well-regarded as one of the top destinations for solo travelers for many reasons – not least the fact that it’s affordable and one of the safest countries in South America.

Latest data from Nomad List indicates that life as a digital nomad in the Argentinian capital, Buenos Aires, should cost you around $1,000 per month, and the Global Peace Index rates Argentina as the second safest country in all of South America – second only to Uruguay.

The city is still emerging as a digital nomad destination; however, it has a solid community and excellent nightlife and dining options.

It’s a very walkable city, and when you do need it, the public transport is excellent – you can get around the city for less than $2 per day on the reliable buses.

Americans can stay in Argentina with no visa for up to 90 days, and if you want to stay longer, the Argentinian digital nomad visa is very easy to apply for and can help you stay for 180 days.

While exploring new places is always exciting, there’s usually a reason why certain countries remain popular with American travelers.

Whether it’s down to the ease of travel, the language, the sights, or the culture, there will always be some favorites that stand out.

The latest favorites of American travelers have been revealed by the experts at Visited Travel App as part of their annual travel report.

They produced a list of the top 10 countries that were most visited by Americans in 2023, according to data from their users.

While the results may not be totally surprising, they are definitely inspiring. Time to start planning some 2024 travel!

Mexico

No surprises here – Mexico has been the premier travel destination for Americans for a long time now.

The beach destinations are unrivaled in Mexico – whether you want to sun yourself on the Riviera Maya, catch waves on the Pacific Coast in Oaxaca State, or sample a slower pace of life Mazatlán.

Then there are the cities – with Mexico City leading the charge as one of those places you simply must visit once in your life, especially as a solo traveler.

There’s always chatter about safety in Mexico, and naturally there are some places you should avoid, but with usual travel precautions many of the popular locations across the country are safe to visit.

There are plenty of reasons to visit in 2024, not least because the Tren Maya is now operational, making traveling around the super-popular Yucatan Peninsula easier and cheaper – allowing us to see some lesser-known hidden gems.

Canada

With captivating cities like Toronto and Vancouver and some of the most stunning scenery on the planet in between, it’s easy to see why Canada attracts travelers in droves.

While there are plenty of flights available to the neighbor in the north, another great benefit for those that live in the north of the United States is that you can easily drive across the border – giving you the benefit of having your own car when exploring the vast wilderness.

One other great reason to consider visiting Canada next year is that its tourism visitor numbers have not fully recovered yet after the pandemic, meaning the most popular places will still be a bit less crowded than usual.

France

A serial winner of the world’s top tourism destination title, France has an endearing appeal that American travelers just can’t seem to get enough of.

Paris alone is a good enough reason to visit this European country thanks to its beautiful architecture, unrivaled art scene, and oh-so-chic café culture.

Despite that, you may want to avoid visiting in the summer this year as prices will be inflated due to the city hosting the Olympic Games.

Away from Paris, France has many other destinations worth your time and effort – from the lush Loire Valley littered with beautiful chateaux to the sparkling seas and luxury hideaways along the iconic Cote d’Azur.

And with new flights to France being added all the time, there really is no excuse for you not to go and see what all the fuss is about.

United Kingdom

A weekend in London is pretty hard to beat.

This super diverse and constantly changing city is not only home to some of the world’s most famous landmarks but also a place where you can find trendy neighborhoods off the beaten path.

You could spend a few days in London and never go to the same places twice, with more still left to explore. It’s no wonder that Americans love visiting it so much.

But there’s much more to the U.K. than just London, though – the country is full of diverse cities and gorgeous countryside that is all easy to access due to its relatively small size.

Italy

Italy is another country that American travelers will always be fascinated with.

Its varied destinations such as Rome, the Amalfi Coast, and Venice are always great places to explore, even in the winter.

Italy benefits from a very efficient and affordable train network – it’s one of the best ways to get around and see as much of this diverse and historic place as possible.

However, my personal recommendation to check out in Italy is the Mediterranean island of Sardinia.

This gem has some of the best beaches in the country, as well as pretty and historic towns, impressive canyons and valleys, and culture that is unique and separate from the mainstream of Italy.

In 2023 more Americans traveled internationally than ever before, and Europe has emerged as the most popular outbound destination for U.S. citizens.

A whopping 15.8 million American travelers visited Europe in 2023. That’s 55% of all international journeys.

But where are all these travelers going?

A new report from Visa Guide World has found that these are the top 5 most visited European destinations by American travelers:

5. Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik is by far the coldest country to appear on this list but it also boasts the most incredible natural beauty.

It is the largest city in Iceland and the country’s capital, but it is still the smallest city on this list.

During the winter months Reykjavik is a frozen wonderland thanks to its location in the arctic circle but the weather is much milder in the summer when the destination becomes beautifully verdant green.

No matter what time of year you visit you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to visit the National and Saga museums where you can explore Iceland’s Viking history.

Other not-to-be-missed attractions include the chance to swim in the geothermal Blue Lagoon spa.

Reykjavik is an incredible city for nature lovers and if you visit during the winter months between September and April then you’ll stand a good chance of seeing the breathtakingly beautiful Northern Lights.

4. Rome, Italy

Italy is a hugely popular country with travelers from the U.S., and Rome is considered the country’s cultural heart.

Incredible architecture, museums and galleries, delicious food, and the warm Mediterranean climate are all part of the eternal appeal of the eternal city.

Rome is the third most visited city in Europe thanks largely to its rich history, monuments, and archaeological sites. Some of Romes’s not-to-be-missed attractions include the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, and the Trevi Fountain.

Although officially a city in its own right, Vatican City is also in Rome, and travelers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to explore its unique and ornate attractions. The Vatican museums are fascinating and you can also see the Sistine Chapel here.

Rome is a modern city with an ancient heart. Spend your days exploring the city’s rich history and your nights eating delicious Italian food and partying with the locals.

3. Dublin, Ireland

Dublin is the 3^rd most visited European destination for U.S. travelers. Many Americans choose to visit Dublin because they want to explore their own Irish heritage and others are just looking for a good time!

Some of the main attractions for American travelers in Dublin include The Irish Emigration Museum, the Book of Kells exhibition at Trinity College and the National Museum of Ireland. Dublin is a city with a rich history and these are the best places to explore it.

If you want to learn more about Ireland’s most famous beer, then you can visit the Guinness Storehouse, which was ranked Ireland’s number 1 visitor attraction. And on the subject of beer, Dublin is a great place for a pint or two.

The most popular month to visit London in 2023 was April. The weather in April is perfect for sightseeing and this is when the city really starts to come alive after a long cold winter.

April is also a great time to visit the city’s many parks and gardens, such as Hyde Park and Kew Gardens, when the spring flowers are in full bloom.

For many people, mentioning Latin America brings to mind images of the Christ The Redeemer Statue In Brazil and the colorful streets of popular Cartagena.

As we venture into the new year, travelers are searching more than ever for unique destinations and memorable experiences.

While it’s hard to go wrong in choosing a travel destination in vibrant Latin America, we’ll spotlight one surprising country that is emerging as a top destination.

An Emerging Destination

Visiting off-path destinations can be one of the most fulfilling experiences a traveler can have.

When tourism hasn’t yet taken center stage, it allows more of the local culture to shine through.

El Salvador welcomed 3 million arrivals in 2023, a number marking a 13% increase from 2019’s previous record.

And while this country is setting records and emerging as a new must-see place, it’s still relatively unknown, making it a great destination for lower prices and authentic experiences.

Is El Salvador Safe?

El Salvador’s uptick in tourist arrivals can be attributed in part to the country’s transformation in terms of safety.

Under the current president, this previously violence ridden country has seen drastic reduction in crime rates and success in its dismantling of organized crime.

El Salvador is now one of the safer countries in Latin America and is on its way to landing on bucket lists all over.

Along with taking strong action to prioritize reducing crime, the current regime has also invested in renovating and preserving tourist spaces, national parks, and historic centers.

While travelers should always use common sense and be alert, the risk of violent crime is much lower than in years past. It is always advisable to lock up valuables and avoid walking alone at night.

El Salvador’s dry season runs from November to April.

With the rainy season over, travel is easier during this time as the muddy dirt roads can cause transportation issues during the rains.

While Instagram is filled with images on repeat of Costa Rican waterfalls, El Salvador’s stunning landscapes are still relatively under the radar.

Nicknamed the land of volcanoes, this small Latin American nation is home to 25 volcanoes and 14 lakes as well as fantastic beaches.

This underdog country boasts some of the best surfing waves in Central America. Popular beaches for surfing include El Tunco, El Sunzal, and La Libertad.

Hiking fans can base themselves in Santa Ana and go on a guided hike of its neighboring three volcanoes.

An Underrated Cultural Destinations

The chance to scale an active volcano isn’t all El Salvador has to offer its visitors.

This country packs in plenty to explore–the ancient Mayan ruins of Tazumal, buzzing cities like San Salvador, and UNESCO world heritage site Joya de Cerén.

A former farming city buried under volcanic ash for 1400 years, Joya de Cerén is Central America’s own version of Pompeii.

With its Charming colonial cities, breathtaking national parks, and great beaches, this lesser-known destination makes for a great winter escape.

As El Salvador is a very small country, you could easily see much of it within just a week or combine it with neighboring countries for an extended trip.

U.S. Issues New Emergency Travel Alert For This Popular Latin American Country

In a major turn of events, the United States has issued an emergency travel alert for Ecuador, an increasingly popular country that in recent years has become a trendy spot for nature-based getaways and cultural tourism in Latin America, thanks to its unspoiled nature and colonial heritage.

In case you haven’t been following the news in the last couple of days, peace in Ecuador has sadly been disappeared following numerous prison riots, which have led to a surge in crimes across the typically tranquil nation. Travelers will need to follow all government orders and adhere to the advice in the latest alert issued by the U.S. Embassy in Ecuador.

Now, U.S. citizens who are visiting soon, should they opt to go ahead with their travel plans, will be subject to strict new orders.

What Is Happening In Ecuador Right Now?

It all started when the Ecuadorian Government confirmed that, on January 7, Adolfo Macias, the leader of a powerful criminal organization who had been jailed on a 34-year sentence, had escaped prison on the day he was rumored to be transferred to a maximum-security facility.

There have been simultaneous criminal attacks across cities, jailbreaks, and even armed men storming into live TV studios.

As Guillhaume Long, the former Foreign Minister has stated, Ecuador may have had an issue with crime for years, having ended 2023 rated among the worse in Latin America, but following last weekend’s mayhem, the situation has ‘spiraled out of control’.

It didn’t end there:

In a coordinated attack on January 8, only a day later, prisoners in at least six other correctional facilities across Ecuador rebelled against authorities and seized power, with as many as 150 guards and staff taken hostage and 39 inmates breaking free of a prison in Riobamba alone.

The situation keeps deteriorating quickly, as by January 9, violence quickly spilled onto the streets, with at least five explosions in ‘several cities’.

Though there have been no injuries or casualties reported for those, the overall picture is rather grim, and what’s worse, fast-evolving.

Government officials have counted as many as 30 different attacks since Macias went missing last Sunday, but no exact links have yet been established, nor has the inmate been tracked down yet.

We understand it may be confusing, and there is a lot going on, but this is clear: due to drug trafficking and turf wars, violence in Ecuador has risen tremendously compared to previous years, and even recent weeks, and the state of unrest could be prolonged further.

What Has Been The Government’s Response?

Based on Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa’s statements, civil distress could worsen, as he will ‘not negotiate’ with the parties responsible for the latest episode.

Noboa elaborated by saying the violence is ‘a reaction’ to the Government’s proposal to build a high-security prison for jailed gang leaders, but that has not been fully established, either.

In response, on January 8 the President a nationwide State of Emergency, set to last 60 days.

Travelers In The Country Are Subject To A Nighttime Curfew

This includes a national curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. directly impacting nighttime services across tourist destinations like Quito, the capital and cultural heart, Cuenca, the colonial gem, Guayaquil, the gateway to the Pacific, and many more.

There is no way of knowing when, or where crime will happen, or when or how an armed conflict will erupt, but if we’re to trust the President’s statement, it most certainly will, as military action will take place, and anti-Government forces will react.

Taking this information into account, it’s no surprise the U.S. Embassy has now issued an emergency alert for Americans in, or who are planning on traveling to Ecuador.

What Is The U.S. Government Saying?

The U.S. Department of State acknowledges the seriousness of the situation, noting that schools in Ecuador will operate virtually through January 12, and even remote work is being recommended ‘wherever possible’.

So far, Ecuador is yet to be demoted from Level 2 to 3 in the Travel Advisory listing, meaning the U.S. still does not discourage Americans from traveling, but seeing that usually happens with some delay, and it’s almost a given the country will be hit with a ‘Reconsider Travel’ advice at some point down the line.

Unless, of course, order is suddenly reinstated. For now, that looks unlikely.

While the advisory isn’t updated, the alert warns Americans to keep up to date with official communications from the government of Ecuador pertaining to the State of Emergency, ‘monitor credible media sources’ for information on ‘threats and violent activity’, and review Washington’s own safety advice.

How Does This Affect Tourists?

Ecuador has not shut down, and tourist services, hotels, and tourist attractions continue to operate normally, except they must adhere to the nighttime curfew.

Other than the threat of violence, the major immediate impact on the tourism scene is the theoretical halting of all nightlife across Ecuador.

In the medium to long term, there is no way of knowing how Ecuador will suffer from a potential eventual drop in tourism revenue.

After all, as charming and picturesque as it is, we wouldn’t be the first ones to book a flight out to Quito anytime soon, not until the dust settles and there is more information available.

For those who still intend to visit, flights to and from Ecuador continue to operate normally without changes in schedule or time, so far, as the curfew provides an exception for a number of essential workers, as well as individuals traveling via airports during curfew hours.

Embratur, the Brazilian Tourist Board, claims their unique culture throughout the country has been a driving force for increased tourism this year.

Over half a million American travelers have made their way to Brazil, where each destination in the country seems to have its own personality.

Some cities are more popular than others, of course, but many are still being put on the map beyond the recognizable names we all know.

In addition to culture, Embratur claims travelers are seeking a variety of ways to experience their diverse country, such as beaches, nature, historic cities, gastronomy, sunny escapes and sustainable tourism.

Rio de Janeiro

Rio may have the biggest recognition when we think of Brazil. Although it’s one of the furthest destinations from the U.S., that doesn’t stop Americans from checking this bucket-list beach city off their list.

With unmatched scenery and a lively, bustling culture, Rio is nonstop action even at famous Copacabana Beach.

This area is not for a tranquil beach getaway as you may get lost in a maze of crowds, a mix of locals and tourists alike.

Rio is a gem any time of year, but thousands flock to the city for the celebration of Carnival in late winter.

Sao Paulo

Those seeking an escape to an urban jungle brimming with cultural experiences should look no further than Brazil’s capital – Sao Paulo.

Often seen as the engine that runs Brazil, travelers can immerse themselves on the cheap into this underrated cosmopolitan giant.

Here is one of many places across the country to take advantage of phenomenal cuisine, arts and a variety of entertainment.

Stays are much more affordable compared to Rio, plus there are ample direct flights from the U.S., which tend to save travelers money on airfare.

Sao Paulo is then a cheap domestic flight to other popular destinations or a reasonable bus ride to Rio or other stunning coastlines even closer.

Other Destinations Being Spotlighted

Brazil is a vast country with many cities and regions not known to the average Joe or Jane. It’s not only Rio and Sao Paulo that are gateways into the country.

Sao Paulo can be your city escape, while Rio checks off the luxury beach destination, but what about the Amazon jungle or peaceful mountains of Minas Gerais?

There are also other coastal cities, such as Salvador gaining attention as a cultural hub and beautiful beach getaway – all easily connected by air.

According to Travelmath, U.S. travelers can fly nonstop to Manaus to explore the Amazon, Sao Paulo for a taste of the city life, and Rio for a bucket-list beach getaway.

Taking Advantage Of Visa Postponement

The U.S. requires a visa for Brazilian travelers, so Brazil flipped the script and will require the same.

Taking effect In April 2024, after a recent delay in implementation, all U.S. travelers will have to pay an $81 fee to obtain a visa to enter the country.

Americans are pouring in while they can to avoid the hassle and payment.

While the surge of travelers has only been reported through October, when the new visa requirements were originally supposed to be imposed, it will be interesting to see if tourism numbers dip from April onward.

Traveling to the Caribbean can be expensive. Most travelers don’t think of South America when they think of the Caribbean, but Colombia’s coast is indeed part of the Caribbean. You can definitely see, taste, and feel the Caribbean influence on Cartagena.

Colombia is one of the cheapest destinations in Latin America, so visiting Cartagena is a great way to get a taste of the Caribbean without breaking the bank.

To save money, consider staying outside the old town (the artsy Getsemani neighborhood just outside the city walls is a great choice) and eating local food instead of the pricier tourist restaurants.

Getting to Cartagena is also affordable. The budget carrier Spirit Airlines offers nonstop flights to Cartagena from Orlando, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale. There are also nonstop flights from Atlanta on Delta and New York on JetBlue and Avianca.

This makes Cartagena one of the best tropical destinations in Colombia if you’re looking for Caribbean vibes and culture.

Great For Solo Travelers

Another reason to visit Cartagena this winter? It’s great for solo travelers!

Many destinations in the Caribbean are not solo traveler-friendly, but Cartagena definitely is. There are tons of social hostels where solo travelers can stay, and if hostels aren’t your style, you can meet other travelers by doing activities like walking tours, cooking classes, or a boat trip.

Cartagena is also one of the best destinations in Colombia for solo female travelers because it’s one of the safest cities in the country.

Winter Has The Best Weather

Finally, winter is a great time to visit Cartagena because of the weather!

Cartagena has a year-round tropical climate, and there’s very little temperature variation throughout the year. Typically, the daily high is around 89° F, and the low is around 79° F. However, during the winter, it can be a couple of degrees cooler so it’s not quite as sweltering hot.

December through April is also considered the “dry season” in Cartagena. This means you’ll have sunnier weather with less rain. Additionally, it’s not as humid during the winter.

This makes winter the best time to visit by far — the weather in Cartagena can be oppressively hot and muggy during the summer, but winter is perfect!

One of the undeniable highlights of the winter event calendar is the Fiestas de Zapote, an annual festival in San Jose that features bullfighting, rodeos, and traditional Costa Rican music, just to name a few.

This year, the festival is set to take place between December 25th, 2023, and January 5th, 2024, so if your travel schedule is flexible enough, definitely try to time your visit so that it coincides with what many believe to be Costa Rica’s most iconic event.

If you’re planning to fly to the country a bit later in January, you can always attend the long-awaited Palmares festival, which is a massive celebration full of parades, concerts, and entertaining acts.
