1. Las Vegas, Nevada

Why This Sunny Region Of Spain Is A Must Visit For Americans This Winter

We are sure visiting Europe in winter does not sound too appealing to most, as it’s the coldest period across the continent, and in a majority of countries, sunshine hours are severely limited, not to mention the fact that it normally gets dark before you have time to finish your post-lunch siesta.

Luckily for you who have yet to take a Transatlantic trip following Europe’s reopening for tourism, not all of it will be plunged into darkness come winter.

This one region along Spain‘s Southern coast will likely remain sunny and relatively warm still throughout the season, and for you culture enthusiasts out there, you are in for a treat:

The Perfect Off-Season Sunny Getaway

Costa del Sol literally translates from Spanish as ‘Sunny Coast‘, and it couldn’t have been more appropriately named.

Located in Southwestern Spain, near the border with Portugal, and at the closest point between Europe and Africa, it has pretty mild winters compared to other regions in Europe.

For starters, due to its geographical location near the African tectonic plate, its seasons are not nearly as defined as in Central or Northern Europe, where spring and summer are warm, autumns are rainy, and winters are typically extremely cold.

The best way to describe the weather in the Sunny Coast is ‘eternal spring‘, with a seasonal spike in temperatures starting from May and lasting as late as October.

In fact, we wouldn’t actually recommend you visit during the hotter months unless sunburns and sleeping under 95°F don’t faze you.

The coldest month on the Sunny Coast is January, and even then, temperatures still average 64.4°F during the day and only drop to a maximum low of 46.4°F late at night.

Rainy days are infrequent, and though the Mediterranean is off-limits for swimming this time of year unless you’re used to colder waters, you can still wear shorts and lightweight jackets when stepping out for some sightseeing.

It may sound like an odd statement to make, but the off-season, particularly winter, is when the Sunny Coast is best enjoyed.

What To See Around Costa Del Sol

The Sunny Coast is part of the Andalusia autonomous region of Spain, and extends from the province of Granada, to the East, all the way to the Gibraltar Peninsula, near Cádiz.

It is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea, and interspersed with traditional Andalusian villages, luxurious beachfront hotels and golden sands.

One of the largest cities is Malaga, a coastal resort spot that enjoys a year-round warm climate and a plethora of cultural attractions, from the House of Picasso, where the artist was born and spent his early years, to a medieval hilltop Moorish fort offering sweeping views of the coastline.

Other Malagueto icons are the Plaza de Toros, a historical bullring, Malaga Cathedral, a Reinassance effort built following the Christian Reconquista, and the Atarazanas Central Market, where visitors will find a variety of food items and Andalusian delicacies.

Outside Malaga, some unmissable gems include Estepona, famous for its palm-lined boardwalk; Fuengirola, where the liveliness of the social scene is not conditioned on the season; Marbella, the unofficial seafood and yachting capital, and Frigiliana, a whitewashed, cobbled village straight out of a fairytale.

Tourists are particularly fond of Torremolinos, a coastal resort town within short driving distance of naturist-friendly beaches and boasting a high concentration of LGBT-friendly venues, and Benalmádena, where hiking trails, a cable car ride, and a charming Old Town await them.

The Sunny Coast Is Affordable To Visit This Winter

One of our favorite things about traveling down the Sunny Coast of Spain in summer is how affordable it is.

Granted, it is far from being one of Europe’s most expensive destinations, and it’s been a go-to budget-friendly getaway for years, but it gets particularly cheap over winter due to the seasonal tourism drought, which helps bring prices down.

This January, you can book a hotel room in Hotel Zeus in central Malaga for only $78 per night, down from $87.

The four-star Room Mate Valeria, a chic accommodation a short 10-minute walk to Malagueta, the city’s main sandy beach, is also $128 this season, down 40% from the usual rate of $213.

For those who don’t mind sharing a room, we strongly recommend Chinitas Urban Hostel, in the heart of the Old Town, where they will have access to a rooftop bar with privileged views over the ocher-colored cityscape and of Malaga Cathedral for only $26.

If it’s an all-inclusive vacation you’re after, the Melia Marbella Banus is a great pick, located on a quieter coastal section near Puerto Banus, only 150 meters from the beach, with prices starting from $228 for a Premium room.

Over in Estepona, the Elba Estepona Gran Hotel & Thalasso Spa is a favorite among wellness seekers, with all meals included and access to state-of-the-art spa facilities for $208 per night.

How To Get To The Sunny Coast From America

If you’re flying in from America, the easiest way to reach the Sunny Coast is flying first into Madrid, Barcelona, or any other European destination offering winter flights to Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, the main international hub serving the coastal provinces.

These would be a majority of Northern European and non-coastal destinations in Central Europe.

Some intra-Europe flights to Malaga can be as cheap as $25 one-way.

Embratur, the Brazilian Tourist Board, claims their unique culture throughout the country has been a driving force for increased tourism this year.

Over half a million American travelers have made their way to Brazil, where each destination in the country seems to have its own personality.

Some cities are more popular than others, of course, but many are still being put on the map beyond the recognizable names we all know.

In addition to culture, Embratur claims travelers are seeking a variety of ways to experience their diverse country, such as beaches, nature, historic cities, gastronomy, sunny escapes and sustainable tourism.

Rio de Janeiro

Rio may have the biggest recognition when we think of Brazil. Although it’s one of the furthest destinations from the U.S., that doesn’t stop Americans from checking this bucket-list beach city off their list.

With unmatched scenery and a lively, bustling culture, Rio is nonstop action even at famous Copacabana Beach.

This area is not for a tranquil beach getaway as you may get lost in a maze of crowds, a mix of locals and tourists alike.

Rio is a gem any time of year, but thousands flock to the city for the celebration of Carnival in late winter.

Sao Paulo

Those seeking an escape to an urban jungle brimming with cultural experiences should look no further than Brazil’s capital – Sao Paulo.

Often seen as the engine that runs Brazil, travelers can immerse themselves on the cheap into this underrated cosmopolitan giant.

Here is one of many places across the country to take advantage of phenomenal cuisine, arts and a variety of entertainment.

Stays are much more affordable compared to Rio, plus there are ample direct flights from the U.S., which tend to save travelers money on airfare.

Sao Paulo is then a cheap domestic flight to other popular destinations or a reasonable bus ride to Rio or other stunning coastlines even closer.

Other Destinations Being Spotlighted

Brazil is a vast country with many cities and regions not known to the average Joe or Jane. It’s not only Rio and Sao Paulo that are gateways into the country.

Sao Paulo can be your city escape, while Rio checks off the luxury beach destination, but what about the Amazon jungle or peaceful mountains of Minas Gerais?

There are also other coastal cities, such as Salvador gaining attention as a cultural hub and beautiful beach getaway – all easily connected by air.

According to Travelmath, U.S. travelers can fly nonstop to Manaus to explore the Amazon, Sao Paulo for a taste of the city life, and Rio for a bucket-list beach getaway.

Taking Advantage Of Visa Postponement

The U.S. requires a visa for Brazilian travelers, so Brazil flipped the script and will require the same.

Taking effect In April 2024, after a recent delay in implementation, all U.S. travelers will have to pay an $81 fee to obtain a visa to enter the country.

Americans are pouring in while they can to avoid the hassle and payment.

While the surge of travelers has only been reported through October, when the new visa requirements were originally supposed to be imposed, it will be interesting to see if tourism numbers dip from April onward.

Home to an abundant nature, a vibrant culture, and warm, welcoming people, South America has been one of the top destinations for Americans this year.

Throughout 2023, several countries on the continent registered a record increase in bookings as a result of loosened entry rules, attractive prices, and improved flight connectivity following the end of the health crisis.

Though the ongoing spike in arrival figures is unlikely to slow down anytime soon, there are four very important updates U.S. travelers heading South early next year should be aware of: some spell great news, others not so much.

We will start with the cheery stuff, but you want to make sure you read until the very end, or you may be in for an unpleasant surprise in the future.

Buenos Aires Is The Cheapest And Safest Capital Of South America

If you are planning a trip to Buenos Aires, the charming capital of Argentina and South America’s most prominent foodie hotspot, you are in for a treat.

Famous for its European-inspired architecture, wide boulevards, grand parks, and award-winning restaurants, BA (in the short form) has already been a source of fascination for decades, but it’s truly surged in popularity this year for two reasons.

It is one of the cheapest city breaks for Americans going abroad due to both the ‘tourist dollar’ scheme, which effectively doubles the value of your money when buying pesos in Argentina, compared to the official rate applicable to overseas purchases, and the low consumer prices.

According to BudgetYourTrip, a two-week trip to Buenos Aires can cost as cheap as $354 if you’re going on a budget.

Then, there is the citywide lower risks for robbing, scamming, and urban violence in general: other than being mesmerized by tango street performers and finding out empanadas are their new favorite snack, visitors feel very safe walking the streets in downtown BA.

The same cannot be said of a majority of South American capitals, especially when Argentina has the distinction of being only one of a handful of countries in the region to currently enjoy Level 1 status, as defined by the U.S. State Department.

This means it can be on par with the likes of Iceland, Finland, and Norway in terms of safety, and this brings us to point number two.

Colombia Is Getting More Dangerous To Visit… Again

Contrastingly, Colombia has been slapped with yet another Level 3 warning by the same entity, meaning it is not a low-risk destination, and Americans should even ‘reconsider’ travel.

Since the nineties, the South American gem has made great strides in increasing safety in its cities and tackling its gang-related problems, but it is still miles behind other states in the region in terms of safety.

This year, numerous tourists have reported being victims of violence when traveling in Colombia, and Medellin is once again on track to become the crime capital of the continent.

And U.S. nationals are particularly concerned as they are perceived to have money and make for easy targets.

If you are visiting Colombia in 2024, you should ensure you maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid walking alone late at night, including in touristy neighborhoods, and leave valuable items at your hotel, preferably in a safe.

Machu Picchu Will Allow More Tourists To Visit Every Day

On a happier note, more tourists will now be allowed to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site and Wonder of the World that is Machu Picchu.

One of the most popular tourist attractions for country-hoppers in South America, it offers an iconic postcard-ready view, with well-preserved terraces and ruined yet impressive pre-Columbian dwellings resting high on a mountain in the Peruvian highlands.

If you’re lucky enough, you may get to feed an alpaca and try the local pisco drink, which is supposed to help you with altitude sickness, and the best thing is you will no longer have to fight as hard for a spot on a guided tour or plan your visit far in advance.

In the past, Machu Picchu hosted a maximum of 3,800 visitors per day, and not all were fortunate enough to get tickets on time.

From January 1, however, the Ministry of Culture, responsible for overseeing visits to Machu Picchu, will be allowing as many as 4,500 guests daily, and as high as 5,600 on busier days, helping accommodate more tourists and ensuring no one misses out on this World Wonder.

Visas For Brazil. For Americans.

Perhaps the most serious update on this list, Brazil’s latest reshuffle of entry rules is something you don’t want to read inattentively – if you are American.

As we reported a few months ago, the largest country in South America is bringing back visa restrictions for U.S. passport holders in a tit-for-tat move that’s been interpreted as a response to America’s own harsh visa policies applied to Brazilians.

As promised, the visa will be digital, but something we did not know at the time was that the application process very much resembles a typical visa procedure, which is burdensome as you are about to learn.

No, you will not have to travel to the nearest Brazilian Consulate to apply for an entry permit and an interview, you can submit your information from the comfort of your home right here.

You will, however, be expected to upload an exhaustive list of documents:
- The completed application form itself
- The relevant data on your passport
- A colored digital passport-style photo*
- Confirmation of outbound and return flights
- Bank statements for the last 30 days showing a balance of at least $2,000 for travel
*Passport photos are typically taken on a white background, and the face of the individual must be fully visible. When wearing glasses, they must ensure there is no light reflection. More information can be found in the application form.

Application will cost $80.90, and the application platform is run by VFS Global.

It is live now, and you can already make your application if you are due to arrive to Brazil after January 10 and you hold a U.S., Canada, or Australian passport.

European, British, New Zealand, Japanese, and most foreign nationals do not need visas for Brazil, as Brazilians can travel to those countries and territories visa-free.

Having obtained a visa, Americans will be allowed to travel to Brazil on a single visa for 10 years.

This means you can enter Brazil for up to 90 days on different trips within the next decade after getting a visa approval.

Meanwhile, Canadians and Australians will be granted a five-year visa upon approval.

This winter, a ski trip to Europe is cheaper than you might think.

In fact, there’s one popular ski destination that may even be more affordable for American travelers than traveling to popular U.S. ski destinations.

Northern Italy is a surprisingly affordable destination this winter for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports (or for anyone who just enjoys a good après-ski!)

Here’s why you should consider Italy for your next ski trip, and how a trip to the Italian Alps might be more affordable than you think.

Great Conditions For Skiing

You can’t beat the Italian Alps when it comes to skiing. There’s a reason why this is a world-renowned ski destination.

The mountains in northern Italy have great conditions for skiing as well as other winter sports like snowboarding. The Alps cover all of northern Italy, with the Dolomites in the northeastern part of the country being particularly popular with skiers.

There are tons of great ski destinations located within the regions of Valle d’Aosta, Piemonte, and Trentino-Alto Adige.

Several of the world’s best ski resorts are located in Italy, such as Racines-Giovo and Carezza.

Affordable Flights

Here’s where you might be thinking that a ski trip to Italy is way out of budget. Surely flying to Europe is more expensive than flying to a ski destination in the United States?

But for many Americans, especially those on the East Coast, flying to Italy can actually be cheaper than flying domestically!

That’s because Milan, the city closest to northern Italy’s ski towns, is a major flight hub and it’s often possible to find good deals on airfare. Winter is also the off-season for flights to Italy (especially January through March) so you can save even more money.

For example, looking at nonstop flights out of New York’s JFK for a week-long trip in February yields the following round-trip prices:
- JFK to Vail, Colorado: $1,129
- JFK to Jackson Hole, Wyoming: $1,298
- JFK to Milan, Italy: $648
As you can see, it’s actually significantly cheaper to fly nonstop to Milan than it is to Vail or Jackson Hole.

Even if your flight savings aren’t quite as dramatic as this, you can still make up for the savings in other areas such as…

Budget-Friendly Accommodations

Another thing about northern Italy ski towns that is cheaper than the United States?

Budget-friendly accommodations! Whether you choose a hotel or a self-catering rental, you can often save a lot of money in Italy compared to similar properties in the United States.

According to BudgetYourTrip, the average nightly price for a hotel room in Vail, Colorado is $887 per night. This isn’t even for five-star luxury hotels — it’s just the average for ALL hotels.

There are obviously cheaper ski destinations in the U.S. than Vail, but you still might end up spending $500+ a night on accommodation during ski season.

Meanwhile, in northern Italy, you can find much better deals on accommodation. According to BudgetYourTrip, the average nightly price for a hotel room in Livigno, Italy (a popular ski destination) is just $145 per night.

Cheaper Ski Lift Passes

You can also save big on ski lift passes in Italy compared to the United States.

Lift ticket pricing in the U.S. is out of control, with the cost of a weekday pass in Vail, Colorado reaching a sky-high $229 this season. A weekend pass will set you back $269.

Meanwhile, a day pass in Racines-Giovo, one of Italy’s top ski resorts, is only around €60 ($65 USD.)

This is a huge savings, and it really adds up over the course of your ski vacation.

In addition to lift tickets being cheaper, you can also save money on other aspects of your trip, such as ski lessons and ski rentals.

When you think of a winter getaway, do you imagine sunning yourself on some exotic sands, or perhaps navigating your way through the twinkling lights of an unfamiliar metropolis?

It seems that American travelers value both kinds of trips at this time of year, according to new data released by Allianz Partners.

The travel insurance expert has analyzed more than three million itineraries for roundtrips from the U.S. during a key winter holiday period to determine which international destinations are the most popular.

The top 10 is a pretty enticing list of some of the best destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe.

I know where I’d choose (Mexico, I’m looking at you), but what about you?

1. Cancun, Mexico

Like you really need someone to tell you that Cancun is an awesome destination for a winter escape.

But did you know that the year 2024 will be one of the best times to visit this Mexican favorite?

Why not get in there early and take advantage of a winter trip in January or February?

The new Maya train has just begun operations and there’s a new airport in nearby Tulum, making the entire region around Cancun even easier to explore.

There’s also a plethora of new hotels and resorts in the region soon to open – so there’ll be more choice and probably slightly cheaper prices due to the competition.

2. London, United Kingdom

I’m British, so you don’t need to tell me how much it rains in the United Kingdom, but let me tell you that the winter is still a magical time to visit the capital city of London.

The city is iconic, and in reality, it’s more like visiting multiple cities in one if you take the time to tour around.

Sure, the headline acts such as the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, and the London Eye are worth your time, but you can enjoy a more off-path experience by checking out some of the trendier neighborhoods – each with their own distinct vibe.

My advice would be to explore places like Bermondsey for its indie breweries, Hackney for its vibrant culture, and Shoreditch for some great nightlife, including one of the best blues bars you will find on this side of the Atlantic.

3. San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico

There aren’t too many better places to get the Mexican winter sun experience than on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula in San Jose Del Cabo.

Luxury resorts, unrivaled wellness spas, affordable accommodation for digital nomads – San Jose Del Cabo really does have it all, not to mention perfect winter weather and a slightly quieter and slower pace of life than Cancun.

4. Montego Bay, Jamaica

Recently listed as one of the most popular Caribbean destinations for Americans, Montego Bay in Jamaica offers you a little bit of everything.

There are also outdoor experiences to be had, such as a hike up to the world-famous Dunn’s River Falls, a 180-foot high and 600-foot-long waterfall that is the perfect place for taking in the luscious scenery of this magical island.

5. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Punta Cana may play second fiddle in terms of popularity to some of Mexico’s iconic locations, but it makes up for it with arguably even more beautiful beaches and more affordable prices.

The all-inclusive hotels here are as legendary as the white sands and sparkling seas that run around the coastline.

And soon, Punta Cana will be connected up to the Dominican capital Santo Domingo by a new train, in a major upgrade of the country’s railway network.

This November, hotel occupation already sits at all-time highs of 85 to 95 percent, depending on weekdays, and winter bookings are certain to accelerate in the weeks to come as the colder months approach and the average American’s urge for that winter sun intensifies.
