The Caribbean is one of America’s go-to vacation spots.
With its teal-colored ocean, bustling resort zones, and tall palm trees lining modern boardwalks, it provides U.S. nationals with the once-a-year tropical getaway they so desperately crave.
As a whole, the region is exploding in popularity, with every major country and national polity reporting a sharp increase in visitor numbers compared to 2019 and high occupancy throughout both low and high seasons.
With that being said, some are definitely standing out among the rest, either through investing more in infrastructure or purely their fast-paced recovery. That is the case with Jamaica, one of the top destinations this fall:
Why Is Jamaica Exploding In Popularity?
An island country in the Caribbean and the geopolitical group’s third largest island, behind only Cuba and Hispaniola, Jamaica has no shortage of natural wonders.
Its extensive coastline circles around for approximately 1,022 kilometers, with as many as 30%, or up to 306.6 kilometers, being sandy and considered ‘suitable’ for recreational use – such as sunbathing and swimming – as reported here.
Out of the Caribbean nations, Jamaica has one of the highest proportions of white-sand beaches, resulting from its many offshore coral reefs, which also give the water its crystalline tone. The country’s greatest strength as a tourist destination lies, therefore, in its coastal environment.
That’s not to say inland Jamaica should be missed, nor that it lacks any cultural value.
An Underrated Cultural Spot
Away from the coast, tourists will find verdant natural parks and vast, unspoiled jungles and mountain ranges, where wildlife spotting and hiking can be practiced, as well as small colonial-era settlements and plantations.
Jamaica’s History is marked by the slave trade, and some of the largest colonial plantations in the Americas can be found here, as well as British-era civic buildings and historical forts.
If it’s some relaxation you’re after and having your every need catered to as you kick back and simply bask in the Jamaican sun sounds appealing, you’ll certainly be spoiled for choice when picking from one of Montego Bay’s numerous all-inclusive offers.
A Diverse Offer
With its beachfront hotels and trendy ‘Hip Strip’, lined with shops and seafood restaurants, it is Jamaica’s busiest coastal resort.
Negril, on the other hand, is best known for its nightlife and water activities, making it the perfect destination for young travelers looking to socialize, while Ocho Rios is a busy cruise port.
Kingston, the country’s capital, is best known for its colonial mansions, the landmark Bob Marley Museum, and strong coffee culture: ideal for a cultural immersion once you tire yourself of ‘beaching’. Regardless of which traveler profile you identify with the most, one thing is for certain:
You will love Jamaica’s weather in the fall.
Great Fall Weather
While it may rain in ‘short, heavy downpours’, these clear quickly, and temperatures remain at a pleasant high of 87.8°F throughout the day the entire season, dropping to lows of 73°F in the evenings.
If you’re not crazy about the fall foliage and you wouldn’t mind a little escape to a tropical paradise to ward off the autumn chills, then Jamaica certainly will not disappoint.
Luckily, nonstop flights are plentiful, and they can be as cheap as $99 one-way when booked with Frontier.
Jamaica Is Breaking Tourism Records This Year
According to Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, the country is on track to reach its goal of hosting 3.8 million visitors by the end of the year, having already hit the 2.47 million mark between January and July.
Out of those, 1.72 million were cruisegoers making landfall for a stopover, more than twice 2022’s numbers.
As Bartlett noted, this represents an increase of more than 24 percent in ‘gross tourism dollars earned’ in only seven months: ‘Coming out of the pandemic, tourism has consistently demonstrated its resilience and, as a result, the sector’s contribution to the Jamaican economy cannot be overlooked‘.
Since Jamaica reopened its borders last year, tourists have been flocking to the island in record numbers, and Americans make up a sizable percentage of those, as the United States is the most popular country of origin for arrivals.
Jamaican nature is beautiful, the resorts are world-class, and it is easy to travel to from mainland America. It’s truly no surprise it is surging in popularity in 2023. Flying to Jamaica, Americans must now fill out a new entry form, which can be accessed here.
For many Americans, it’s looking like the start of fall now, and most of us are happy to embrace the stunning foliage, cozy weather, and spooky season.
The only problem is that no matter how great all might be, we all know what comes next.
Soon the leaves will drop and a chill will start to overtake much of the country, and with it the arrival of a long winter.
It’s not all doom and gloom though, the good news is that with more Latin American travel destinations expanding in popularity, more flights from the U.S. to sunny and warm destinations are offered.
More and more direct flights to unique locations to see cloud forests, beaches, and Mayan ruins mean more opportunities for Americans to escape the cold and head off on a tropical adventure.
One such place that Americans can fly from many major airports is the Honduran island of Roatán, a diving hotspot filled with sun, sand, and great vibes.
When it comes to Latin America, many Americans head to Costa Rica, and for good reason: it’s a great destination worthy of all its hype.
However, the other unique and culture-packed countries making up this part of the world are very much deserving of a visit as well, including Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.
Yet, Honduras’s most popular tourist destination lies far from the country’s north coast, about 40 miles off the coast in the Caribbean Sea.
Welcome to the island of Roatán.
Ease Of Getting There
With direct flights from many major U.S. airports, Roatán is well-connected for a winter getaway. Multiple airlines fly this route with connections as well, and deals can be found if you book early enough.
As part of the Bay Islands, Roatán is the only one with an international airport. It operates in the central time zone, and a flight from New York will only take about four hours, meaning you don’t have to waste too much time traveling.
Roatán is only about 5 miles wide and around 40 miles long, and in total the area is around 32 square miles of beaches, towns, fishing villages, and green hilly unspoiled nature.
Let’s be honest, most people come here for the beaches, racing from world-class manicured shores to natural and rugged. Although the beaches are endless, the more popular ones for tourists are West Bay Beach, Hall Moon Bay Beach, Marbella Beach, Camp Bay Beach, and Mahogany Bay Beach. Make sure to read up on each area as they all offer a different vibe and might not be what you are looking for.
If you have heard of Roatán before, it’s likely because of its world-renowned driving opportunities. The island is surrounded by some of the most bio-diverse coral reefs in the world, and the vast diverse sea life that lives here keeps even the most seasoned divers coming back for more.
Roatán is actually home to the second-largest barrier reef on earth, and the endless diving companies here are eager to take you out and show you the splendor. Snorkelers are also spoiled for choice here, so don’t worry if diving is not your thing; there will still be plenty to see from the surface as well.
While you can relax and chill as much as you want on Roatan, it’s no secret that the island has some pretty epic nightlife as well.
Due to the large number of tourists, most of whom are here to dive, the bars and clubs along the beaches serve late into the night, and the nightlife is renowned for being a fun time.
There are numerous famous places known for partying when the sun goes down; from dock parties to tiki bars there is enough nightlife to go around.
So plan ahead when booking your accommodation to make sure you are as close (or far) from this as you want to be.
Perfect Weather
Being an island in the Caribbean far off the mainland, the weather in Roatán doesn’t follow a strict calendar. That being said, the winter months of November through February are known as being the cold season, although it’s hardly cold at all.
Christmas time is the coldest time of year, and even then the average temperature is around 75 degrees, with pleasant sea temperatures for swimming.
The high season for tourism is between October and May, so you won’t have the place to yourself, but it’s unlikely that you will find yourself swamped with crowds.
Underrated Opportunities
While Roatán is a more popular destination in Latin America, it’s still relatively underrated by American travelers (aside from the diving crowd).
A visit to Roatán will allow you to enjoy some Latin American culture and can be a great starting point for more travel in Honduras and beyond.
While it’s true there are some safety concerns, as long as you are well prepared and know where to visit and where not to, you can enjoy a very underrated and under-explored country that many average travelers never see.
TripAdvisor just released the latest report from their Seasonal Travel Index series. There are some golden nuggets inside for travel trends, but the one topic that stood out was the most popular international destinations for American travelers.
Common places such as Los Cabos, Cancun and Paris made the cut, but one destination gaining popularity is the stunning city of Florence.
According to TripAdvisor’s data, it is a top 10 international destination for U.S. tourists this year. One of the more popular European getaways for Americans is the astonishing country of Italy.
Yet, more often than not, we hear about Rome, Venice, maybe Milan and the gorgeous Amalfi Coast.
Florence, or as locals call Firenze, doesn’t tend to make the top of the list when booking an Italy vacation. That has changed this year, and rightfully so.
This city will forever leave lasting memories from the moment you step foot on its cobblestone streets and your eyes meet its breathtaking scenery.
Why Has Florence Flown Under The Radar?
There are direct flights to Italy from the U.S., but none of them go to Florence. Even as a large city, it’s a trek to reach from America.
Starting off, you are guaranteed to have a long flight with a layover. If you aren’t starting your trip from a major city, chances are you will have multiple layovers.
That can be off-putting to some travelers. Even though Italy is a top destination for Americans, what they are discovering is Florence is worth the extra effort.
Florence will welcome you with open arms, whether traveling as a couple, with friends or even solo (female too), as it’s generally considered a safe city.
With a recent report from Expedia reporting a 20% decrease in airfare, now may be better than ever to visit.
Florence is a true gem; there is no other way to put it. The largest city and capital of Tuscany is a sight to behold.
Not only will Florence mesmerize you with its visual wonders, but it will add the aromas of Italian food through its winding cobblestone streets.
It’s everything you ever dreamt of Italy. But we’ll get to the food later. Florence is stunning with eye-popping architecture and set along the picturesque Arno River.
You can’t miss the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, which overpowers the Florence skyline with its centuries-old history and beauty.
It’s about the most romantic backdrop imaginable. Boat tours are popular, but some say it’s best explored by bike. The city is perfectly walkable as well, especially with minimal vehicle traffic.
Sometimes a slower pace can bring a stronger sense of appreciation for what you’re seeing, and you will want to see a lot in Florence!
The Top Sites
Not only is the city filled with amazing art, top-notch museums and architecture that will leave you gobsmacked, but the Tuscan countryside is gorgeous as well, to say the least.
The perfect shade of green rolls on for miles and miles through the hills and charming small towns. This is where the highest-rated activity around Florence takes place.
TripAdvisor reported the favorite activity from American visitors is taking part in a small-group wine tasting in the gorgeous Tuscan countryside.
Tuscany is a major producer of wine in Italy, and there may be no more scenic place to indulge than here.
That is unless you happen to see a hole in the wall in Florence. Wouldn’t you reach in, too?
The Food Is Astonishing
Dating back to Lady and the Tramp, we’ve all had dreams of stuffing our faces in Italy. Florence turns those dreams into reality.
The moon doesn’t have to hit your eye like a big pizza pie to realize how amazing the food is here.
TripAdvisor nailed it when they recently reported that 67% of U.S. travelers prioritize their destination of choice around food.
Florence is a lovely place to explore and delight your tastebuds. Wandering the cobblestone streets, you can literally follow your nose to where you want to eat.
It goes without saying Florence is home to amazing pizza and pasta dishes, among other specialties, but you can’t forget the countless gelato shops to satisfy your sweet tooth.
For years now, Cancun has been thenumber one tourist destination for Americans going abroad, renowned for its luxurious resort zone, world-class amenities, and of course, the miles on miles of sandy beaches bounded by the turquoise-colored Caribbean Sea.
Its popularity has extended well into 2023, even after the world’s wider reopening for tourism and other countries’ return to the competition. This year, as many as 20.5 million visitors are expected to visit the wider state of Quintana Roo, proving the Caribbean giant is still at the top of its game.
It may already be the King of Tourism, but with the diversification of the tourist offer elsewhere in Mexico,it looks set to get a new lead on its competitors due to 4 new reasons:
Revitalization Of The Tajamar Boardwalk
One of the biggest complaints among those vacationing in Cancun is how the city feels largely underdeveloped, with potholed streets and poor walkability beyond the resort walls. That’s why a majority of tourists often restrict their movements to the glitzy Hotel Zone.
Soon enough, Cancun’s urban infrastructure problems will be formally addressed, with more parts of the city set to be revitalized, from municipal parks to smaller beaches away from the main one, the well-frequented Playa Delfines, though the one we’re most excited about is the Tajamar Boardwalk project.
Currently, it makes for a pleasant leisurely stroll on the waterfront with views of the turquoise ocean, but there are no noteworthy amenities or tourist attractions along the ‘malecon’, at least for now.
In the near future, over $700,000 will be invested in making the boardwalk more attractive.
This may involve the widening of pedestrian and cycling paths, the introduction of restaurants and bars to the area, which borders the landmark Nichupte Lagoon, and open green spaces for the promotion of outdoor activities.
Free WiFi At The Beach
Cancun is not exactly renowned for the speed of its public WiFi, particularly in beach zones outside resort complexes, where connectivity can be remarkably weak. Unless you have a generous data package to see you through excursions out of your hotel, you could be left disconnected from the online world.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as a majority of tourists landing in the Caribbean are actively seeking to disconnect and take in the natural surroundings, but it can be a bit of a nuisance too.
Luckily, Cancun authorities have been paying attention to feedback and are now installing WiFi antennas along the Hotel Zone.
By the end of August, two of the busiest beaches in Cancun, Kilometer Zero and Playa Delfines, will be served by GigNet, a popular infrastructure provider in Mexico known to have introduced optical fiber to the Caribbean provinces.
While you shouldn’t exactly expect fast-speed internet in public spaces, at least now you won’t need to rush to the next convenience store to buy more data if your package suddenly expires.
Reopening Of Las Coloradas
After months of being closed off to tourists due to environmental concerns, the famous Las Coloradas are finally open again and hosting tourists.
One of the most popular day trips from Cancun and a top-rated attraction in the Yucatan Peninsula, it sits on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
Other than the verdant nature reserves that border it, the Las Coloradas lakes are, of course, best known for their bubblegum pink-colored hue, as a result of a combination of red algae native to salt lakes and tiny shrimp that inhabit the incredibly salty waters.
Last March, access to the site was closed due to disagreements between tourist guides and the salt company that oversees the landmark. These seem to have been resolved now, allowing for the return of visitor groups.
Day tours to Las Coloradas can be booked from Cancun through the numerous tour companies and private, certified guides that operate in the city, as well as Rio Lagartos, the nearest major city, and as far away as Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatan.
A New Tourist Train Launching
Finally, tourists can expect connectivity traveling to and from Cancun to improve from this December when the long-awaited Maya Train is set to launch.
Traveling on a loop around the Yucatan Peninsula, the train will call at all of the main tourist stops and as many as 34 stations, including Cancun and Cancun International Airport, making it a lot easier for passengers arriving at the Mayan Riviera to reach other destinations on the coast.
The train will run parallel to the ocean and, in some sections, over a viaduct, offering panoramas of the verdant scenery below, Mayan ruins, and open-air cenotes, and should leave each station every two hours, from 6 am to 10 pm daily.
Official ticket fares have not yet been announced, but earlier reports indicate they may cost between 60 and 80 Mexican pesos. Learn more about the Maya Train and how it will transform travel in the Mexican Caribbean here.
Do your 2024 travel plans include visiting La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona or a gondola ride in Venice? If so, you’re going to have to plan on applying for a travel pass beforehand.
And, no, we’re not talking about the tourist tax to enter Venetian city limits or Spain’s Sustainable Tourist Tax. We’re talking about the ETIAS, which is set to launch in 2024.
Americans (and travelers from other countries like Canada and Great Britain) currently don’t require any special visa or travel pass to enter the Schengen area and other parts of Europe for short-term stays under 90 days.
However, the ETIAS is set to change that.
Here’s what to know if you’re planning a trip to Europe next year as an American or a passport holder from one of the other 59 different visa-exempt countries.
What Is The ETIAS?
ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It’s a new system that will require visa-exempt nationals, like Americans, to request and pay for a travel pass before entering certain European countries.
And while that sounds a whole lot like a visa, it’s important to note that it’s not the same thing. Instead, it’s a travel pass, which is technically a visa waiver.
It’s similar to the ESTA some foreign travelers are required to have when visiting the US or Canada’s eTA.
The point? It’s not to make travel harder for Americans. It’s ultimately designed to help the European Commission enhance security and prevent travelers from overstaying their visit.
So, when will these new rules go into effect? The ETIAS was approved in 2016, but its official launch has been delayed numerous times.
Currently, all official websites note that the date is “from 2024,” but they’ve provided no official start date.
If you’re traveling to Europe in 2024, we suggest staying updated with travel news and bookmarking the European Union’s official ETIAS page to periodically check for updates.
Which European Countries Do Americans Need A Pass to Enter?
While there’s still no official start date, officials recently announced the complete list of 30 European countries where Americans and other visa-exempt nationals will need a travel pass to visit once the program launches.
The full list includes the following countries:
Austria
Belgium
Bulgaria
Croatia
Cyprus
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Iceland
Italy
Latvia
Liechtenstein
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Malta
Netherlands
Norway
Poland
Portugal
Romania
Slovakia
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
What if you’re planning to take a larger trip throughout several European countries in 2024? You only need one ETIAS.
The ETIAS travel pass is linked to your passport and is valid for three years or until that travel document expires (whichever comes first).
Applying For The ETIAS
Because the ETIAS is not a visa, applying for one is pretty straightforward.
In fact, it’s set to be as simple as applying for the eVisa required for Americans to enter Turkey or the Electronic Travel Authority they have to apply for when visiting Australia.
To get an ETIAS, you’ll fill out an online application. You’ll enter information such as your passport number, place and date of birth, address, email address, and travel information.
You’ll also have to provide information about prior criminal convictions, your current occupation, and information regarding your length and purpose of stay.
Then, you’ll pay the €7 fee and wait for your application to be approved (applicants under 18 and over 70 are exempt from paying this fee!).
It shouldn’t take any longer than four days (although ETIAS.com says 95% of people should be approved within minutes) unless they request further documentation, in which case it could take up to 14 to 30 days.
ETIAS Doesn’t Guarantee Entry
Unfortunately, simply having the ETIAS doesn’t automatically grant you entry to any of the 30 European countries in the list above.
You still have to go through the regular passport control check, where a border control agent will check your passport and any other required documentation.
This could include asking to see travel insurance, requesting proof of sufficient funds during your stay, or even asking to see accommodation reservations.
Ultimately, they have the last say on whether you’re allowed in or not, so check the entry requirements for the country you’re flying into just to be sure.
And finally, stay up to date on ETIAS news. Until it’s officially launched, start planning your European getaway by looking into underrated European cities to visit.
Mexico is the number one beach destination for Americans going abroad, irrespective of the season.
Famous for its turquoise waters, booming resort scene, and tropical atmosphere, the country is just the perfect getaway for sunseekers year-round.
Safety, however, remains one of the main concerns for U.S. citizens vacationing out of the country, especially this year, when certain states South of the border have made headlines yet again for rising crime rates and gang activity.
Luckily for Americans, their favorite destination is still one of the safest amid Mexico’s well-documented battle against crime, and security there is set to be even tighter in the coming months:
Cancun Is Perfectly Safe To Visit
If you have a vacation to Cancun booked for the coming months and you’ve been worried about reports of violence coming from Mexico, you’ll be relieved to learn that the local government’s great stride toward reducing crime has paid off.
Last July, the city witnessed a considerable increase in safety initiatives, from the launch of new security operations to the introduction of a ‘tourism batallion’, with the sole aim of keeping tourists safe from gangs operating in the area, as well as pickpockets.
The results have been impressive: while Mexican states like Sinaloa and Colima have been issued a stark ‘Do Not Travel’ warning by U.S. tourists, Quintana Roo, of which Cancun is a part of, remains at only Level 2.
This means travelers are not discouraged from visiting.
Instead, they must simply observe a higher level of situational awareness, mostly due to scamming practices noted in the area and pickpocketing.
In terms of urban safety, in the eyes of the U.S. Department of State, Cancun is at the same level of traditionally safe cities like Paris and London.
The Hotel Zone Is One Of The Safest Places To Be
This is due to the city officials’ continuous work to improve safety around the busy Hotel Zone, where a majority of American visitors are based, and in tourist hotspots both in and near Cancun, such as the beach towns of Playa Del Carmen and Puerto Morelos, and the massively-popular Tulum.
Cancun authorities upkeeping the city’s security is paramount to its success – Cancun is currently one of the most sought-after beach destinations worldwide – and they have spared no effort in ensuring it stays on the right track, especially after ‘signs of cracks‘ appeared in their protective shield.
Crime had been rising in Cancun up until this summer, and as the Cancun Sun reported, not only ‘of a petty nature’.
The strengthening of organized crime has been a pressing concern, and though shootings and turf wars are mostly restricted to the suburbs, last year, they reached the Hotel Zone.
Shootings were reported within the resort strip between 2021 and 2022, and though only individuals with links to organized crime were targeted, the incidents understandably scared away some tourists and put hoteliers on high alert.
Ever since, the Government of Quintana Roo has taken no chances when it comes to the safety of visitors.
How Are Local Authorities Responding To Crime?
One of their most popular measures included an increase in patrols and K9 units in Downtown Cancun and the Hotel Zone, trained to specifically identify potential threats to tourists and help keep crime out of the touristy center.
Police have also increased surveillance in the Bohemian district, with random checks carried out at bars, nightclubs, and even restaurants, in hopes that their ‘visible presence’ will keep criminals away.
This seems to have worked so far, as no shootings have been recorded in the Hotel Zone this year so far.
Additionally, the ‘Safer Beaches Initiative’ has proven a major success.
It has enabled visitors to fully relax and enjoy their much-needed break basking under the Caribbean sun with the certainty the sands are being policed day and night.
Security units are comprised of local police, the aforementioned ‘tourism battalion’, the National Guard, and even agents of the Secretary of Citizen Security.
They have even cracked down on the infamous local aggressive taxis, who have been displaying violence when confronted with competition from Uber drivers, threatening them with 18 years in prison for altercations.
Whether it’s walking the bar-lined streets in the early evenings or strolling the beach at sunset, Americans have never felt safer than they do now in Cancun, as it is no longer an attractive place for criminals with such a strong police presence.
Cancun Is One Of The Safest Destinations In Latin America
Yes, crime has risen, as is expected of any global destination of Cancun’s ranking, but it still remains one of the safest destinations in both Mexico and the wider Latin America, a continent often plagued with political turmoil and civil unrest.
No destination in the subgroup has invested so heavily in and taken security as seriously as Mexico has, and Cancun’s enduring post-crisis success is a testament to that commitment.
Island destinations rate high on travelers’ wish lists of places to escape to in the summer, causing overcrowding in popular places like Greece, Spain, Italy, and Mexico.
This has caused tourists a range of issues to contend with, from increased pricing and additional visitor taxation to flight cancellations and travel delays.
While many are prepared to brave the crowds regardless, others are on the hunt for the best underrated island destinations to explore in order to escape the crowds.
HomeToGo, a holiday booking platform, recently conducted a study of underrated island destinations and ranked them based on four main points: traveler demand, standing as a local secret, lack of social media hype, and overall awareness.
The study found that these are the top 5 underrated destinations to visit this summer that most Americans don’t know about:
Wadden Islands
The Wadden Islands, also known as The Frisian Islands, are a string of five islands located in the North of the Netherlands.
When most people think of the Netherlands, they picture historic towns, the canals of Amsterdam, and cultural museums. However, The Wadden Islands are one of the area’s best-kept secrets
They are adored by locals for many reasons: the extensive beaches, unique wildlife, scenic bike routes, and the high number of sunny days for the region.
The Wadden Islands are situated within the largest tidal flats system in the world, and the area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
One of the most popular activities is to go Mud Flat Walking, whereby a guided group goes out at low tide to walk across the seabed and see the local fauna.
Other activities for visitors include: visiting the sand dunes on Texel Island, taking a boat ride to see the seals and beaches of Vlieland Island, going surfing on Ameland Island, wandering the wartime museums on Schiermonnikoog Island, and hiking the nature trails on Terschelling Island.
Summer is undoubtedly the best season to visit The Wadden Islands and partake in all these outdoor activities they have to offer.
Quadra Island
If you haven’t heard of Quadra Island yet, then you’re in for a treat, as this underrated destination is stunning.
Situated off the coast of British Columbia in Canada and 124 mi (200km) north of Vancouver, the island is the largest in the Discovery Island chain.
Quadra is a location of natural beauty and is home to seals, wolves, bald eagles, and whales. Visitors can explore beaches and sheltered coves, hike through forests, kayak along the shores, book a sailing trip, and swim in a number of lakes.
One of the most favored things to do on Quadra Island is to visit Rebecca Spit Provincial Park.
The spit is home to a sandy beach within a sheltered bay and has stunning views of the coastal mountains. It’s the perfect spot for unwinding and beachcombing for seashells.
For those that aren’t the outdoorsy type, there are year-round farmers’ markets to explore, community festivals, cultural exhibits, amazing sunrises and sunsets, a heritage lighthouse, a winery, and an array of local artisan shops.
Another popular place to go on Quadra Island is Herons, a slightly upscale restaurant that overlooks a bay and is attached to an apparently haunted hotel.
It’s the perfect spot to grab a seat on the patio, eat some delicious seafood, and watch the sunset.
Quadra Island is blessed with a temperate climate, stunning landscapes, and a laid-back atmosphere, making it the perfect island destination for summer.
Magdalen Islands
The Magdalen Islands are a small archipelago of 8 islands located in Quebec, Canada.
The islands offer some of Canada’s most scenic secrets, from rolling green pastures to red sandstone cliffs, golden dunes, and plenty of sandy beaches.
The area has been steadily growing in popularity with Canadians but is still largely unknown on the international scale.
While the islands may be small, there is much to discover. All but one island are linked by road, and it only takes 90 minutes to drive the entire chain of islands, making it easy to explore all the best spots.
One of the most popular things to do is to climb a ‘butte’, a small grassy hill that offers stunning views of the entire Island chain. The best one is said to be on Entry Island, as it is the highest viewpoint on the islands and allows for 360-degree views.
A second must-do when visiting Magdalen is to get out on the water and partake in a kayak tour along the red sandstone cliffs and natural caves.
If outdoor activities aren’t your cup of tea, you can also visit the historic site of La Grave on Havre Aubert Island. The site is said to be the birthplace of the Islands and contains a collection of old fishing buildings that now house restaurants, boutiques, cafes, galleries, and a theatre.
Of course, a visit to the islands wouldn’t be complete without touring the local artisan food producers, crafts makers, and most importantly, the beaches. Head to Dune du Nord for a long sandy beach and lagoon or to Dune du Sud for its intricate sandstone cliffs and caves to explore at low tide.
This underrated island destination is the perfect summer escape. It’s a place to slow down, enjoy the beauty of nature, and savor some delicious seafood.
Isle of Portland
The Isle of Portland is one of the U.K.’s hidden gems and home to one of Europe’s best and largest beaches: Chesil Beach. It’s an ideal destination for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle to unwind.
Located in Dorset County and part of the Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site, the area was granted status for its geology showcasing 185 million years of Earth’s history and numerous prehistoric remains.
Although not technically an island, as it is connected to the mainland by a barrier beach, it offers all the charm of any seaside town. There are dramatic limestone cliffs, secluded coves, picturesque lighthouses, and plenty of history and culture to explore.
One of the best things to do on the Isle of Portland is also free: walking the South West Coastal Path. The hike covers over 392 mi (630 km) of unique coastline, allowing visitors to take in some of the best attractions the area has to offer.
You can stop at Pulpit Rock, an eroded formation, or Church Ope Cove, the perfect spot for swimming and diving to see shipwrecks.
Other local activities include a visit to Portland Castle for its panoramic views, learning about WWII at the Portland D-Day Center and The Verne High Angle Battery, or partaking in a variety of water sports.
Travelers can also visit the famous Portland Stone Quarry, whose limestone rock was used in the construction of well-known buildings like St.Paul’s Cathedral and Buckingham Palace.
This summer is the perfect time to visit this quaint little town most Americans don’t know about before the U.K. changes its entry rules next year.
Egadi Islands
The Egadi Islands are often touted as Italy’s best-kept secret. Although extremely popular with Italian tourists during the summer, these islands are still largely unknown by outsiders making it one of the few off-path places left in Italy.
Located off the coast of Sicily, Egadi is comprised of three islands: Favignana (the largest and most popular), Levanzo, and Marretimo.
Each rocky island offers the ideal Italian charm, beautiful Mediterranean waters, and laid-back atmosphere you would expect from any Southern European town.
Favignana is a sleepy island that forces visitors to slow down and take a break from the stressors of everyday life. It is home to quiet whitewashed streets, an old tuna factory museum, and numerous swimming spots.
You can visit Bue Marino for its towering rocks and caves or Cala Rossa for its crystal clear waters and protected cove.
On Levanzo island, you can see the famous prehistoric cave paintings at Grotta del Genovese or hike to the top of Marettimo for stunning views. The island has only one small town meaning time there is best spent on a boat or wandering along the shores.
Marettimo is the most remote of the islands and the least inhabited. The name means “sea thyme” due to the numerous thyme bushes that give off a pleasant aroma throughout the island.
Because of this, the best thing to do on this island is to go for a walk, visit the castle of Punta Troia, see the wild beaches, and snorkel the underwater shipwrecks and sea life.
It is always claimed that locals know best, and in the case of this underrated island destination, the Italians really do know best. The Egadi Islands are a destination everyone should be adding to their summer travel plans.
U.S. travelers are globetrotting like crazy this summer despite rising costs across the board. Hotels, flights, and everything in between seem to be going up.
But that hasn’t stopped travelers from taking to the skies for a summer escape. Central America is home to some amazing destinations, so it’s no surprise why it’s so appealing.
Anywhere from Guatemala to Panama has places worth visiting, especially if you’re a digital nomad or a solo traveler.
One country in particular is seeing an influx of American travelers coming their way. Almost 800,000 U.S. tourists have come to Costa Rica this year.
Here are 6 reasons why American travelers flocking to this Central American paradise:
An Alternative To Crowded Beach Resorts
While many travelers are flocking to the Dominican Republic or Mexico resort towns, some prefer more space.
Instead of being surrounded by fellow tourists on a pristine beach, some of us like to have some elbow room.
The good news is Costa Rica has amazing beaches with less crowds. You may have to go a little off the grid as there is no Cancun here, but the journey is worth it!
Some hidden gems are waiting to be discovered, and sometimes you might be the only one there to take it all in.
Costa Rica does have all-inclusive beach resorts, but nowhere near the density of say, Punta Cana or Cancun.
More Flights
More and more airlines are adding Costa Rica airports to their network, making it easy for Americans to reach.
American Airlines just announced additional flights this week. But even low-cost carriers such as Spirit and Frontier fly here — plus all the major airlines as well, including Southwest. Travelers usually fly into the capital city of San Jose (SJO), but Liberia (LJO) is gaining popularity too.
No matter which one you choose, its relatively easy to use either airport as a gateway to explore paradise. In fact, recent data shows 90 recent of visitors arrive by plane.
Clean Safety Record
Costa Rica has consistently held a respectable reputation in terms of safety for years. Rarely do you ever hear of travelers being harmed in their travels to this amazing country.
That’s not to say there isn’t crime, as the U.S. State Department did issue a travel advisory warning this past Spring.
However, despite some reports of a surge in crime, travelers are not typically targeted unless they find themselves in the crosshairs in a “wrong place, wrong time” scenario.
Most crime happens in and around San Jose, but the scenic beach towns and jungles are commonly considered safe destinations.
Celebrity Influence
Who doesn’t want to be rich and famous? When we see celebs living their best life, we want a taste too!
With gossip sites taking over the algorithms of our newsfeeds, it’s hard to ignore what the rich and famous are up to.
When a celebrity couple vacations here, it can quickly take over headlines where travelers say, “if it’s good enough for them, its good enough for me!”.
So, when famous models and musicians such as Gisele Bundchen and Shakira are reported living Pura Vida, that’s when travelers whip out their credit cards and book their next trip.
A Perfect Place To Reset
There may be no better place in Central America than Costa Rica to immerse yourself in nature, whether you’re going solo or with loved ones.
Those seeking a reset may seek out a luxe yoga retreat, a relaxing stay at an ecolodge in the vast jungle, or a beachside stay in one of its many nice, low-key beach towns.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest is one of the highlights of Costa Rica’s wilderness, where you can disconnect for an adventure in nature.
Digital Nomads Love It
Last summer, Costa Rica officially launched a new digital nomad visa. It’s a very simple process to go through to obtain the visa.
No background checks, in-person interviews, or future income documentation are required. However, digital nomads do have to make a minimum of $3000 monthly, which must be generated outside Costa Rica.
Prove health insurance coverage for the entire duration of your stay
Given these simple steps, Costa Rica has become very popular for digital nomads to work abroad. Plus, the country has many expats making it easier to meet people, unlike some other places.
When most Americans think of jetting off to a tropical paradise, they probably think of places like Jamaica, Cancun, or The Bahamas. But did you know there is a stunning tropical destination close to home that you don’t need to pack your passport for?
For Americans itching to get a taste of the tropics without leaving the country, they don’t have to look far, as the perfect destination lies within easy reach — The Florida Keys 🌴.
Combining several incredible destinations in one, The Florida Keys deserves a top spot on your travel bucket list.
From the snorkellable Key Largo to the quirky Key West, there are endless opportunities to make your tropical dreams come true in The Florida Keys.
The Perfect Florida Keys Itinerary
There are so many incredible places to stay when visiting the Keys it can be difficult to pick one. The easy solution to this is, of course, to pick them all! There is something in The Keys for everyone, and every Key is worth checking out.
It’s also incredibly easy to see everything The Florida Keys has to offer without breaking the bank.
For the ultimate Keys trip, we highly suggest flying into Miami, renting a car, and road-tripping through The Keys. Best of all, there’s no need to make the trek back to Miami when the vacation sadly comes to an end. Simply drop your rental car off at Key West International Airport and fly home from there!
Key Largo & Islamorada
The first stop on your adventure will be Key Largo, one of the best places to call home for a few nights on a journey through the Keys.
For a perfect spot to call home base, you can’t go wrong by checking into the Reefhouse Resort & Marina.
The resort is central to Key Largo’s top attractions, like John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and it has plenty to do on the property, with an amazing pool, a private beach, and delicious food. Plus, you’re only a few minutes away from Islamorada, meaning you can experience 2 Keys in one during a stay at the Reefhouse Resort.
One of the top things to do in Key Largo (and the rest of the Keys for that matter) is to go diving or snorkeling. Don’t worry if you forgot your mask; the Reefhouse Resort & Marina has a dive shop right on site!
Get Underwater
Speaking of diving, don’t let yourself pass on the opportunity to get underwater while in Key Largo. This area is home to some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling spots in the U.S. and is not to be missed!
If you have never tried scuba diving and want to learn, there is no place better. If you are already certified, you will love getting to explore the unique underwater landscape the Keys provides.
The average depth when diving in the keys doesn’t typically go beyond 30 feet or so, meaning you’ll be able to spend plenty of time on the bottom saying hello to sting rays and turtles.
If you’re wondering where to try diving, give Horizon Divers a call and tell them what you are looking for. You can easily get yourself on a morning 2-tank dive to explore the shallow reefs and shipwrecks in the Upper Keys National Sanctuary, and you’re guaranteed to have a good time.
You will not go hungry in the Keys. There are so many incredible places to grab a bite to eat that we could write a novel listing them all out. However, there are a few that you definitely shouldn’t miss! Key Largo has one of the best places to grab a bite, the famous Fish House.
The Fish House has locally sourced seafood that is to die for, all served in a quirky “keys-style” restaurant. Just give them a visit and you’ll see what we mean. This is the perfect spot to grab lunch after a morning dive and it should definitely be on your list of must-dos.
Plus, there are plenty of opportunities to grab some photos with friends and family.
If you are staying at the Reefhouse or somewhere nearby, be sure to schedule an afternoon/evening to visit Islamorada. This is the Key directly below Key Largo and is close enough that you can check it out without having to swap hotels.
There are 2 things you definitely need to add to your list of must-dos in Islamorada, and both are delicious.
Firstly, no visit to the Keys is complete without spending some time at The Florida Keys Brewing Company. As you can imagine, space is a prized commodity in the Keys, which is part of what makes this brewery so special.
The Florida Keys Brewing Company brews all of their beer right on-site and is one of the only local breweries that can truly say their beer is made right in the Keys.
Aside from how incredible the beer is, the property itself is eclectic and inviting. Everyone you meet will be friendly and nice, and you’ll be surrounded by incredible artwork, amazing beer, and a welcoming vibe.
After a beer or two, you’ll feel like a regular and probably start contemplating a move to the Keys 😅.
After a tour of the brewery, head right across the street for an amazing sunset dinner at Morada Bay Beach Café. This was one of our favorite dinners in the Keys. Not only was the food incredible, it was beautiful. Even your water comes out dressed to the nines!
Morada Bay Beach Café sunset dinner
And not only was the food delicious and beautiful, the scenery was gorgeous as well. We found ourselves pulling out the camera to try to capture the sunset as it would paint a different picture of the evening for you every few minutes.
If you want to feel like you are eating dinner in a beautiful painting, this is the place to do it.
Heading South
The upper Keys are beautiful, and we already can’t wait to go back, but you are missing out on some of the most iconic sights in the Keys if you end your adventure there.
After spending some time checking out Key Largo and Islamorada, be sure to pencil in a few days to head down the most beautiful stretch of highway in the U.S. to Key West.
Overseas Highway in The Florida Keys
And there’s no need to rush; there are great places to stop off for a bite to eat or take in the scenery along the way.
We left right at around lunchtime, so we made a stop in Islamorada for a delicious meal at the Oceanside Safari Restaurant and Lounge — be sure to try their special Mojito with fresh mint!
It’s the perfect way to cap off your lunch and will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.
Oceanside Safari Restaurant and Lounge Mojito
On your way down to Key West, you may find yourself staring out of the window at the ocean around you.
There is no other highway in the U.S. that gives quite the same feeling as the Overseas highway, and you’ll be glad you decided to drive through the Keys.
Be sure to stop off at the end of a bridge or two to take it all in and grab some photos.
Before you make it all the way to Key West, consider stopping at Bahia Honda State Park for a beach break. There are award-winning beaches and gorgeous stretches of sand to set up camp for a few hours. If you have snorkeling gear, definitely be sure to explore what’s in the water as well!
Pick The Perfect Hotel For You
After catching some sun and sand, you’ll be ready to head into Key West to your hotel (of which there are plenty!).
Depending on what you are looking for during your stay in Key West, there are tons of hotel options to suit your needs. Much of Key West’s action is centered around Duval Street, so if you are coming for the nightlife that may be where you want to look.
However, we wanted to be close enough to the action to enjoy all Key West has to offer without being right in the thick of it. We wanted to enjoy Key West but stay somewhere that felt like its own secluded area away from the rest of the island.
The Capitana Key West was the perfect place to call home that achieved exactly what we were looking for.
From the second you check in you can feel the calm and relaxing energy of The Capitana.
If you are staying in the main hotel building, you’ll have incredible views of the pool and beach from your room, but for a more intimate experience, we opted for the Two Bedroom Cottage.
Many people who come to Key West dream of packing up and moving there after visiting. Staying in a cottage allows you to feel like you already do!
The Capitana Key West Cottage Canal View
The property is a great escape that you could spend your whole trip enjoying if you wanted to, and it is great for every type of traveler and party size.
Spend the afternoon sipping cocktails by the pool or get active and try your hand at some badminton. Either way, you’ll love your stay at The Capitana.
Key West Is Endless Fun
You’ll have trouble deciding what to do with yourself because there are endless opportunities to have an amazing time in Key West, but let us help you out by sharing some can’t-miss experiences:
Sunset Sail
There are plenty of companies offering sunset sails, and if you walk to the Marina, you’ll see signs for all of them. We decided to head out with Sebago Key West and would absolutely do it again!
You’ll head out to the beat of a live musician while the (included) drinks start to flow, and the breeze from the ocean will cool you down before taking in a gorgeous sunset from a unique perspective.
Keep an eye out for dolphins and turtles. If you are patient, you’ll likely spot a few.
Speaking of dolphins, if you’ve never seen them up close and personal, then you should definitely go out on a dolphin watch. We went with Honest Eco, and cannot recommend them enough.
They explained so much about Key West’s dolphin population and you could tell they cared a great deal about the dolphins and making sure the experience was a great one for both humans and dolphins.
We were lucky enough to have some dolphins come right up to our boat to say hello, and it was a bucket list item of mine. I’m a bit of a sucker for animals, and this experience was surreal. I’ve always loved dolphins and been amazed at their intelligence; I’m not ashamed to say I teared up having them so close — there’s no experience quite like it.
If you are on the fence about a dolphin watch, go ahead and book it, especially if heading out with Honest Eco.
The Hemingway House is a classic tourist attraction in Key West, but there’s a good reason for it. The house itself is gorgeous, and the history behind it is fascinating.
Most people know it as Ernest Hemingway’s former home, but before Hemingway owned it, it once belonged to Asa Tift, one of the richest people to ever live in Key West and the most famous wrecker in the area.
Even if the history of the home isn’t your thing, it’s fun to see how many kitties you can spot around the property, all of whom are UNESCO world-heritage protected and allowed to roam the property at will.
Many of the best things to do in Key West are in or on the water, and a kayak tour is one of them.
You’ll see all sorts of wildlife from nurse sharks to starfish, and get to learn about the importance of the mangroves and their significance in the ocean ecosystem.
Kayaking through the mangroves makes you feel completely cut off from the world in the most beautiful way and is an experience you should try at least once. For a one of a kind experience, we went with Lazy Dog Charters.
I can’t stop going on food tours! Seriously, they are the best way to learn about a new destination and a great way to get the lay of the land at the beginning of your trip.
Not only do you learn about the area geographically, but you will also leave with a huge list of all the best places to eat and drink. Aside from the food, you’ll also learn about the culture and history of the area.
In Key West’s case, you’ll never be short on history, culture, or food to sample. Around every corner, there is another story waiting to be told and a new one ready to unfold. There is so much fascinating history in Key West, and it is certainly one of the most unique places in the U.S.
To get the most out of this experience, we went with Key West Food Tours, and the tour did not disappoint.
We said above that you wouldn’t go hungry in the Upper Keys, and the same holds true in Key West. There are a million food options that are all incredible, each with their own unique Key West flair. Certainly don’t restrict yourself to our list, but some of our favorites include:
Half Shell Raw Bar – If you love oysters, this is your spot! Right in the Marina, you can enjoy your meal knowing you are eating some of the freshest seafood money can buy.
Milagro – Chef Kevin has worked with Michelin Star chefs for most of his career and took that experience to create a restaurant with 5-star cuisine in a casual, bistro environment. The food is deliciously decadent in a more laid-back setting — in true Key West fashion.
Blue Heaven Key West – The most iconic brunch spot in Key West and a definite must. Not only is the food delicious, but you’ll feel like you stepped into another world the second you cross the threshold of the entrance.
No Keys Experience Is The Same
It’s an unfortunate fact of life that every vacation must eventually come to an end, but some destinations are worth endlessly repeating. The Florida Keys is definitely one of them.
There is a reason so many travelers come here time and time again, and every visit to The Keys will reveal something new and exciting.
We loved our time in The Keys and, like so many others, will be coming back the first chance we get!
**Travel Off Path was a guest of The Florida Keys, who helped with the creation of this itinerary by hosting some of our accommodations and attractions. Our opinions, recommendations, and suggestions remain our own.**
