The U.S. passport is one of the most powerful globally, granting its bearer access to over 180 countries visa-free, but there are some infamous exceptions.

From Cuba to Turkey, a select number of destinations requires Americans to present either a pre-issued tourist visa, or a travel authorization in order to travel.

To the dismay of some, this infamous will keep growing this year, with the addition of one of the world’s top sunny destinations from October.

As soon as October 1, Brazil will suspend visa-free access to U.S. citizens, reversing a decision taken in 2019 to exempt them from the bureaucratic hurdle. This means that, if you’re an American, your days of enjoying unrestricted access to Brazil are numbered.

On this article, we will give you a quick rundown of why a visa is being implemented, how difficult it will be to apply, and why you should book your flights to Brazil before the new rule comes into force:

Why Is The Rule Changing?

Since Brazil’s newly-elected Government came into power, the country has shifted from its open-door policy and began enacting stricter curbs.

One of those changes has been, in fact, a reversal to a previous visa regime.

Back in 2019, Brazil’s approach to tourism was based on reciprocity. Unlike the European Union, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and much of the international community, Washington does not grant Brazilians visa-free access to the United States.

As a result of the lack of a bilateral visa suppression agreement, Americans flying to Brazil were required to obtain a visa prior to boarding, which could be applied for at the Brazilian Consulate or mission closest to them.

The South American giant abandoned the reciprocity measure temporarily in a bid to boost tourism, but due to a political decision, it is once again being reinstated from October 1.

How Hard Will It Be To Apply?

Beginning October, if you’re an American national, you will only be allowed to board a Brazil-bound flight, or any flights connecting in Brazil for that matter, holding a valid tourist visa.

Unlike what was previously reported when the news came out, the visa application could move online.

While there is a lot of speculation at the moment, the local Government is expected to launch a new easy-to-apply eVisa, enabling American applicants to continue traveling to Brazil with minimal hassle – as well as Canadians, Australians, and the Japanese*, who will also automatically lose their privilege of visa-free travel due to their respective country’s visa restrictions imposed on Brazilians.

So far, no further details have been divulged, but the fact that an electronic visa is being discussed, as opposed to a traditional Consulate-issued visa, is surely encouraging news for bureaucracy-wary tourists, as this means it will be a lot easier to apply.

*The Japanese may be exempt from any visa requirements that may come into force as Tokyo is currently working with Brasilia on a visa-waiver agreement between both countries.

Why Should You Visit Brazil Ahead Of The Visa Implementation?

Visiting Brazil before October 1, Americans will only be required to present a valid biometric passport.

They will not be expected to fill out visa forms, pay a fee, nor submit their travel information ahead of flying, as the visa suppression continues valid up until that date.

In other words, visiting Brazil now is less complicated than it will be in four months.

Although an eVisa is hardly an impediment, with countries like Turkey and Vietnam all having similar procedures in place, visa applications, no matter how simple, are always an anxiety-inducing process, especially when there is a backlog of requests, or the official application website presents problems.

Best to tick Brazil off the list while there are less hurdles standing in your way.

One of Brazil’s oldest cities, Belem do Para was settled by the Portuguese as early as 1616, and serves as one of the main gateways to the landmark Amazon River.

A hugely overlooked gem of the Brazilian North, it was the first European colony established in the Amazon, and due to its historical importance, it’s retained much of that colonial-era charm, an attribute lost in sprawling urban centers like Rio or Sao Paulo.

You will still find canopied streets, European piazzas surrounded by trees, churches with traditional Portuguese-style blue tiles, among other architectural treasures, as well as development zones, and lush green parks. This is the Amazon region after all.

No COVID-Related Requirements

Brazil may be imposing visa requirements on US citizens soon, but on the brightside, it has recently lifted all COVID-related mandates.

Flying to Brazil, you are no longer expected to present either a vaccination certificate or a negative test: entry is once again as simple as it was prior to 2020.

Europe’s borders are fully open, and all pandemic-related restrictions have been lifted, causing travel demand to skyrocket in response, but while a majority of tourists will be fighting for a spot in the sun in Ibiza or Santorini, very few have set their hearts on this beautiful summer hotspot — especially Americans.

Cyprus is one of the trendiest Mediterranean destinations right now.

An island nation located in the basin’s far East, a stone’s throw away from Turkey, it is rising further in popularity due to its burgeoning resort scene and a pristine coastline lapped by azure waters.

But there is more to Cyprus than meets the eye, as it houses not one but two countries, the Northernmost of which doesn’t even technically exist. Sounds confusing?

Allow us to explain:

The Complex History Of North Cyprus

Cyprus’ recent History is one of conflict.

While we won’t bore you with detail, one thing you should know is that the island is split in two between the internationally-recognized Republic of Cyprus, and a breakaway state, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which occupies a third of the territory.

While the Republic, lying to the South of a United Nations Buffer Zone, is a member of the European Union and home to Greek-speaking Cypriots, a majority of Turkish-speaking Cypriots, as well as Turks who have emigrated from mainland Turkey, live in the unrecognized, heavily-embargoed North.

Cyprus has been at the heart of a centuries-old conflict between Greece and Turkey, aggravated since Turkish forces invaded and occupied the Northern portion of Cyprus in the seventies, and the current status quo is often considered an unsolvable quandary in geopolitics.

Despite continued militarization on the island since the invasion, particularly along border zones, Cyprus is considered safe to visit, and both Southern Cypriots and Northern Cypriots live peacefully on their respective sides of the dividing line in spite of a lack of integration.

Cyprus is, after all, a super trendy Mediterranean spot, hosting millions of guests every year.

Interestingly, a majority of tourists only ever visit the Greek-speaking South, either rapidly glossing over or skipping the North altogether due to its reputation of being underdeveloped and simply ‘not worth the hassle’.

The truth of the matter is these widely-disseminated misconceptions could not be further from the truth.

Is This Southern Europe’s Most Underrated Destination?

The North of Cyprus is perhaps the island’s most fascinating region.

The de facto state extends from the tip of the Karpass Peninsula, the Northeasternmost point of Cyprus, where some of the best beaches and marine parks are located, to Cape Kormakitis on the Northwestern coast.

Aside from a handful of exclaves, the border with the South runs along the heart of Nicosia, the island’s capital and a city claimed by both the Turkish Cypriot administration and the Greeks.

North Nicosia is jam-packed with tourist attractions, such as the Selimiye Mosque, the largest and oldest Gothic structure in Cyprus that used to be a church, to the 16th-century Büyük Han caravansarai, and an Ottoman bazaar bustling with trade.

Beyond Nicosia, adventurous tourists are drawn to the city of Kyrenia (called Girne in Turkish), straddling the North Cypriot coast. With its heavily fortified harbor, medieval castle, and cobblestone streets edged by traditional Greek-style whitewashed houses, it is really the stuff of fairy tales.

Kyrenia is also within short driving distance of gorgeous coastal spots, most notably the Alagadi Turtle Beach, highly sought-after by wildlife spotters, and Diana Beach, a tiny, secluded bay bounded by the azure waters of the East Mediterranean.

Outside the major urban settlements, the breakaway North has retained the postcard-ready 13th-century Bellapais Monastery, nestled between the lush green mountains, only 3 miles southeast of Kyrenia.

The hilltop ruined Saint Hilarion Castle, set against a dramatic rugged landscape, is yet another gem worth exploring.

Also not to be missed: the archaeological complexes of Soli and Salami, comprising the remnants of two ancient Greek cities which still feature an amphitheater, a colonnaded agora, and remarkably well-preserved mosaics.

If it’s some beach fun you’re after, the Karpass Peninsula is where you should be headed. Expect to find beach clubs, an up-and-coming resort scene with affordable overnight stays, and less crowds in comparison to South Cyprus’ resort town of Ayia Napa.

In the Famagusta Province, which took the brunt of the conflict in the seventies, dark tourism is blooming, particularly in the Ghost Town of Varosha, cleared in the seventies following the invasion, and the shelled city of Famagusta itself.

How To Safely Visit North Cyprus

Some important info you should know ahead of visiting North Cyprus:

Despite not being recognized as a country, it issues passports*, it has a national flag, a different language (instead of Greek, Turkish is the most widely-spoken language), currency (the Turkish Lira is in use), and of course, it’s established border posts with the South and its own police force.

*International recognition of travel documents issued by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is limited

The depreciated Turkish Lira is partly the reason why Turkey is such a popular budget destination for American travelers, and the fact that the North of Cyprus has adopted it means it is much cheaper than the Euroized South.

According to a recent report published by North Cyprus International, prices are on average 25% lower in the North, with most of the food being locally produced and hotel fares being similar to those in the sister nation of Turkey.

The cost of living in North Nicosia and Kyrenia may be higher, as they are important tourism and trading hubs, but Northern Cypriot cities remain incredibly cheap by European standards.

Careful Not To Be Banned From Entering The South

The best way to get to North Cyprus is flying to the South first.

You can only fly to North Cyprus directly via Turkey, as all other countries have suspended flights to North Nicosia since the conflict erupted all those decades ago.

There is a catch, though: arriving directly in the North, you will be unable to cross to the South afterward, as the Republic’s authorities will deem you have entered Cypriot territory illegally.

In order to avoid problems, it’s best to land first in Larnaca, the main international airport serving the Republic of Cyprus, and get a shuttle bus to South Nicosia. Once in the capital city, you can cross the border at one of the many checkpoints splitting Nicosia in half.

The busiest of them, the one on Ledra Street, Nicosia’s main shopping avenue, is the preferred crossing point for tourists.

You will have no issue going back and forth between the Republic of Cyprus, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, as long as you are stamped in the Republic of Cyprus (the Greek South) first.

The easiest way to travel around North Cyprus is driving, as public transportation options are limited, and some intercity buses do not run on a fixed schedule, departing only when full. There are no trains in the island of Cyprus.

Luckily, regular bus services link major cities like Nicosia (North) and Kyrenia/Girne.

Cyprus Is A Level 1 Destination

Cyprus is perfectly safe for tourists, with the State Department listing it as a Level 1 destination in spite of the unsolved dispute.

As long as you do not attempt to enter the Buffer Zone or militarized areas, you will have no issue exploring this fascinating island, both North and South.

Your First Day & Where To Stay

If you’ve never been to Aruba, I’d suggest taking your arrival day to unwind on the beach or at your resort. Nobody likes flying half the day away, but as soon as your feet hit the white sands of Aruba, you’ll forget about the time it took to get there.

For a first-time visit (and every visit after, honestly…), one of the best areas to stay is going to be Palm Beach. The beach is about 2 miles long and has everything you could possibly want on a Caribbean vacation.

Aruba Is More Than The Beach

Of course, one of the highlights of heading to Aruba is going to be its gorgeous white-sand beaches. And when I say white sand, I mean it!

Aruba has some of the whitest sand in the Caribbean and, as a result, never feels hot on the feet. Everything about the sand and the beautiful blue waters screams relaxation and peace of mind.

But Aruba is more than its beaches! Aruba really is a destination for every type of traveler. Art, culture, adventure, nightlife, and more are all at your fingertips and easily accessible from anywhere on the island due to its small size.

Personally, I like to check out the local art scene and do more “off-path” things (yea, I said it).

On a different trip to Puerto Rico, one of my favorite experiences was exploring the amazing street art in Santurce. Little did I know Aruba is also home to absolutely breathtaking street art and murals!

San Nicolas Street Art

Founded in 2016 by Tito Bolivar after being inspired during a visit to Bogota, Colombia, Aruba Mural Tours in the city of San Nicolas offers travelers a glimpse into what’s possible when an idea becomes a sensation.

The first murals went up after the first-ever Aruba Art Fair, and San Nicolas’ fate was sealed.

Now, there are well over 40 murals to enjoy, and everywhere you turn your head, you will be met with art from some of the greatest muralists in the world.

I’d suggest the morning tour, as the sun won’t be as hot, and you can plan to stop and grab some great local fish on the way back to your hotel at Zeerover, a restaurant on a picturesque pier that looks out on the unbelievably blue waters where your fresh meal just came from.

A Truly Off-Path Experience

There is no better way to truly get off path than by heading into the desert! I wasn’t aware that Aruba had a desert until a few days before my trip, but it’s definitely worth exploring.

Most of my experience of the Caribbean is from the time I spent living in Grenada, which is very mountainous. You can’t look too far in any direction without seeing a mountain unless you look at the ocean, of course.

In Aruba, you can see for miles. Everything is incredibly flat, and a trip into the desert really shows the unique character of this island.

What is the best way to see it?

A UTV tour! UTVs are different from ATVs; they are like a cross between an ATV, a golf cart, and a car, and they are an absolute blast to drive through the desert! We toured with De Palm Tours, and our guide was hilarious and informative.

During the tour, you’ll stop at several points in the desert to get a bit of history, a chance to stretch your legs, and the option to switch off driving to be a passenger for a while, which is the perfect time to grab some great video!

Pro-tip: Wear some really amazing sunglasses with great coverage, or bring some off-roading goggles. If you don’t have either, they have them for sale before the tour begins. There is no windshield, and there’s a lot of sand in the desert! ????

The Most Important Decision

Aside from choosing to visit Aruba in the first place, one of the biggest influences on whether you will have a great vacation is going to be where you stay. I touched on it above, and I’ll say it again, the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino was the perfect pick for a stress-free vacation with everything I could possibly need while enjoying all that Aruba offers.

From a delicious breakfast on the gorgeous balcony to a picture-perfect afternoon under the ocean-front palapas, the Marriott did not disappoint.

I wasn’t there long enough to try everything, but that just means that I’m more excited to go back for another visit.

In particular, I want to try the Massage de la Aruba at the on-site Mandara Spa and the Desert Bathing experience offered by the Marriott, where you can enjoy a picnic in the desert after a yoga session and some introspection.

To cap off your Aruba adventures, I highly recommend enjoying your last dinner at sunset at Atardi, where you can dine with your feet in the sand in one of the most beautiful settings in the Caribbean.

The view of the sun setting over your delicious dinner on your last night in Aruba will stick with you, and you’ll desperately want to come back the second you leave.

Having remained open for tourism throughout the health crisis and often portrayed as one of the most welcoming countries in South America, Brazil left American travelers dismayed at the decision to reimpose visa requirements that had been lifted in 2019.

From October, U.S. citizens, as well as Canadians — will no longer enjoy visa-free access to Brazil, like their European and British counterparts.

Unless they hold a pre-issued visa, which must be shown at the airport counter, they will not be allowed boarding.

This is hardly news to those who had visited Brazil prior to 2019, but it may come as a shock to first-time visitors, especially considering how hard it will be to apply for a visitor visa:

Why Is Brazil Making It Harder For Americans To Visit?

While it’s common for developing nations subject to visa restrictions by the U.S. to drop visa requirements for U.S. citizens, or at least make them less cumbersome, usually in a bid to boost tourism, it is not guaranteed that they will.

In these cases, e-Visas or VOAs (Visas On Arrival) are commonly introduced as a solution to the reciprocity issue.

After all, citizens of only 40 countries out of 195, primarily in Europe and high-income Asian countries, can enter the United States visa-free.

Traveling to Turkiye, Vietnam, Indonesia, and numerous other popular tourist destinations, Americans must either apply for an online travel permit or pay a fee and apply for a visa directly at the airport of arrival.

This is only a minor nuisance for most, as e-Visas and VOAs are quite easy to obtain.

They are not traditional visas and are less bureaucratic, and do not affect the freedom of movement of U.S. citizens.

They can apply for the permit from the comfort of their homes by filling out an online form or simply landing at their destination.

Being non-visa exempt, however, is a whole other ball game.

Recently, Brazil has announced it will reinstate its reciprocation policy by reintroducing visa requirements on nationals of foreign countries that do not grant Brazilians visa-free entry.

Currently, Brazilians can travel to 171 nations visa-free, or 90.48% of the world, making it a fairly friendly nation and the Brazilian passport one of the top 20 most powerful.

Regrettably, the United States is not of those states that have signed a visa-waiver agreement with South America’s largest economy.

This means that, as soon as October 1, 2023, Americans will be barred entry unless holding a valid tourist or long-term residency visa.

How Hard Will The Brazilian Visa Be To Obtain?

Brazil’s reciprocity measure is also quite literal: the harder a third country makes it for Brazilians to visit, the harder Brazilian authorities will make it for passport holders of that country to visit Brazil, and the United States is known to have some of the strictest visa procedures.

As detailed by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, foreign nationals who do require a visa must, first and foremost, check which kind of visa best serves the purpose of their visit.

A Brazilian Visitor Visa (or VIVIS) would apply to a majority of American applicants:

It enables its holder to stay in the national territory for a period of 90 days, allowing for sightseeing, visiting family or friends, attending business meetings and conferences, and other leisure or business-related activities.

When applying for other visa categories, such as the recently-launched Brazilian Digital Nomad Visa (BrDNV), or a work permit, Americans may be eligible to remain in the country for a longer period while working remotely and/or accessing the job market.

After identifying the correct type of visa that applies to them, U.S. citizens must then collect the relevant documentation.

Based on requirements imposed by the U.S. on Brazilian nationals and still applying reciprocity, these may include:
- Proof of paid accommodation*
- Proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of the stay
- Proof of onward or return ticket
*Or an invitation letter written by a Brazilian national or resident who will be hosting the applicant in their home. This letter may require official registration.

Next, travelers must fill in the online application form, which can be found on the Ministry of Foreign Affair’s official website.

During completion, all the documents that had been gathered in the previous step must be attached to the form itself.

Once the form has been submitted, it is necessary to print and sign the Visa Request Form Receipt, or RER, as it may be required by Brazilian Consular authorities.

Lastly, Americans are expected to fill out a ‘booking request form’, and wait until they are summoned by the nearest Consulate.

For the last step, they can either post all the original documents to the Brazilian Consulate upon paying the fee – this includes your current American passport – or attend a visa appointment, when the visa can either be issued or denied.

Prior to 2019, visa denials were extremely rare and often resulted from a lack of documentation or incomplete applications.

The Consular Section informs that it takes up to 15 working days to process visa requests, but these wait times may be impacted by a surge in demand.

How Much Will The Visa Cost?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also published their latest visa fees, and Americans can expect to pay up to USD $160 for a tourist visa, in response to the United States’ own USD $160 visa fee applying to non-visa exempt applicants, assuming pre-2019 fees will be reapplied.

These changes are due to come into effect on October 1, and Americans who will be traveling to Brazil following the implementation date are urged to plan accordingly.

The new measure applies only to citizens of:
- The United States
- Canada
- Australia
- Japan
All Europeans, including non-EU Europeans, such as Serbian and Turks, the British, and New Zealand nationals can continue traveling to Brazil freely as their countries have signed visa-waiver agreements enabling Brazilians to travel hassle-free.

According to a new report published by the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association, abbreviated to ALTA, Argentina has officially exceeded its pre-pandemic levels of passengers in January 2023, suggesting this year could be on track to become the country’s biggest since records began.

Effectively, it has reached 101% of growth in the first month compared to January 2019, placing Argentina at the forefront of the tourism scene in the wider Latin World: no other destination in the geopolitical group has kickstarted 2023 as successfully:

Although it is still likely to top an ‘overall passenger numbers’ chart somewhere, Mexico has only grown by 25% compared to 2019, perhaps slowed down by Cancun’s less potent rebound; meanwhile, Brazil is yet to return to its pre-pandemic traffic, having got as far as 93%, with no growth in January 2023.

The fact that Brazil has recently decided to re-impose visa requirements for Americans is also not playing out in its favor. In Chile’s case, where 88% of January traffic levels have been recovered, the slower growth can be attributed to a strict border regime and other harsh local anti-COVID measures.

In other words, Argentina is crushing it compared to its strongest competitors. But how did it outpace them so quickly?

One Of The Safest Countries For Tourists In South America

Not only is it relatively affordable to visit, with the excellent currency exchange rate, but Argentina also ranks as one of the safest countries in South America. It is one of only three countries in the continent where Americans are not advised to exercise ‘increased caution’ when visiting or even avoid visiting at all by the U.S. State Department.

Crime rates in parts of Argentina are surprisingly low — lower than some U.S. cities, for that matter — and urban safety levels are high, with cities like Buenos Aires, Rosario, La Plata, and Mendoza all deemed low-risk. In comparison, neighboring Brazil has one of the highest crime rates globally.

And then, it boasts an endless supply of cultural attractions. Well-delineated by wide boulevards flanked by green patches, interspersed with Belle epoque, Art Deco, and Neo-Gothic buildings, Buenos Aires has deservedly earned the nickname ‘Paris of South America‘, and in this respect, it is easily the most beautiful capital Mercosur capital.

In other parts of the country, tourists will find glaciers and even Welsh-speaking minorities, particularly in the Patagonian South, as a result of a large influx of migrants from Wales. No COVID Entry Requirements

Lastly, Argentina has no entry requirements, as mentioned above. In order to visit from the U.S., you will not be expected to present a vaccination card upon boarding nor undergo any form of testing upon landing. Entry is a breeze, and the attitude towards COVID is much more relaxed than it was in 2020 or 2021.

Americans are generally allowed to stay in Argentina legally for up to 90 days as tourists, though there have been instances where they were granted a longer sejour.

Americans Should Expect Less Travel Disruption Vacationing In Europe This Summer

If you jet off to Europe last summer immediately after the continent fully reopened for tourism, amid the post-pandemic travel frenzy, you might have realized, much to your dismay, that airports were not prepared for such an unprecedented surge in travel demand.

Back then, last-minute cancelations, long delays, winding queues and severe staff shortages became the norm. After nearly three years of being barred from visiting, almost every American sought entry into Europe, and regardless of any mitigation measures in place, it was downright chaos.

Seeing that the appetite for travel is currently the highest it’s ever been, many predicted summer 2023 would be a mere extension of last year’s woes, but it could be the exact opposite. According to experts, travelers should in fact expect less travel disruption vacationing in Europe in the future:

Europe Is Better Prepared To Deal With Pent-Up Demand

According to ACI Europe, an airports’ organization, the European zone should be able to cope with demand this summer, and the capacity caps that affected operations across major hubs last year, including Frankfurt, Schiphol and Heathrow, will be the exception rather than the rule.

At the peak of the crisis, these airports were forced to cut down the number of flights allowed per hour in order to adapt to the far more limited staffing levels, and the sudden spike in passenger numbers. The move led to a wave of cancellations and other severe disruption between the months of June and August.

Other airports like Dublin International faced extremely long wait times, with passengers who arrived many hours ahead of their flight being held up at security and prevented from boarding as a result of long delays. Things would only improve in the fall, when the peak travel season came to an end.

Luckily, Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI Europe, has now reassured potential visitors that airports are more prepared to manage the busy air traffic come summer, as ‘they have reached out to all their operational partners’ to identify both risks and ‘stress points’.

Staffing Levels Are Sufficient

One particular concern is staffing levels, which remained way below the required minimum for such a sharp spike in travel bookings. According to Jankovec, not only airports, but also airlines, ground handlers, border control forces and air traffic control will ramp up their mitigation efforts.

In countries like the U.K., which at the beginning of 2022 was already struggling with a severe shortage of border officers, long customs delays had become all but inevitable. While we are not able to make country-based predictions, Americans traveling to Britain in 2023 may not be as badly affected as their peers who visited in 2022 following mass hiring campaigns.

In Jankovec’s own words, ‘by and large, the aviation system capacity on the ground should cope with demand, and capacity limitations will remain the exception‘. British Airways (BA) Chief Executive Sean Doyle added himself he is ‘confident’ there won’t be a repetition of last summer’s woeful stories.

Doyle notes they have ‘come a long way very quickly’, and that resourcing and operability are ‘in a much better shape than last year’. In actual figures, BA has hired more than 7,500 new staff since launching a major recruitment campaign last year.

Europe Is Nearing A Full Recovery

Other data shared by ACI Europe shows how close Europe is to returning to its pre-pandemic form. In January 2023, passenger traffic was only 11 percent lower than January 2019, with roughly 42 percent of European airports having already recovered their pre-crisis traffic.

The excellent indicators can be attributed to the continent’s resumption of normality and lifting of all border measures, a move which has encouraged American tourists, and all other visiting nationalities, to journey across the pond more. With the exception of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia – for obvious reasons – all European nations are now open for tourism restriction-free.

Some of Europe’s fastest-recovering tourist destinations this year, in terms of air traffic, include Portugal, Cyprus, Croatia, Malta and Romania. On the other hand, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Germany lag behind at least by 30 percent compared to the pre-COVID years.

Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, was quoted saying ‘with strong travel demand continuing through the traditionally slower winter season in the Northern hemisphere, the stage is set for an even busier spring and summer.’

The best thing about being a digital nomad is that it’s not a one size fits all formula. Challenges and Inspiration

Now, it goes without saying that packing it in and heading out into the world with your laptop is easier for some than others. Family and financial obligations are, of course, huge factors in terms of being able to make the lifestyle work.

While there are many people that have successfully transitioned to a digital nomad life with kids, the logistics for schooling and healthcare are much more complex when you factor in children and other family commitments.

Another barrier is financial obligations. Oftentimes, you will meet digital nomads from two categories. The first is those who never owned a home or even possibly a car — so “packing it all in” literally meant just getting rid of your apartment and possessions, a task that isn’t really all that hard.

On the other end of the spectrum, you will find those who sold their homes and cars and are using that money as a cushion to help fund life abroad. This leaves out those who fall somewhere in the middle, perhaps owning a home but not ready to give it up. It’s no secret that the cost of living and inflation have made the financial burdens on us very heavy, and it’s much easier said than done to sell it all, rent it out, put it in storage, and head out into the unknown.

It’s understandable that the risk of becoming a digital nomad might sound too great, but don’t be discouraged. Ultimately only you know what’s right for you, and if you are one of those who long for the digital nomad lifestyle but it’s just not feasible for you currently, there is some good news!

There is no age limit for being a digital nomad. Embarking on this lifestyle when you are 65 can be just as fulfilling as if you were 25. There’s a lot of the world to explore, and there really is something for everyone. One idea for those interested in the digital nomad life but unable to dive in headfirst is a workcation. Does the idea of taking a few weeks away from the office yet still working and not using any holiday time sound good? Then a workcation might be just the answer for you.

Many companies are beginning to embrace this trend, realizing that workers are just as productive out of the office, and time away from the cubicle leads to an increase in employee satisfaction. If your workplace doesn’t explicitly announce that work cations are possible, it’s worth asking, just don’t be surprised if it sets an office trend.
