That all depends on where you go. While September is certainly one of the best months to travel from a budget-friendly perspective, there’s no denying October is officially sweater weather season, a time to dig into the back of your closet and dust off your cozy attire.

Travel experts at TimeOut named the top 11 places to kick off fall in October with only a few U.S. destinations making the cut.

While a pair of iconic cities were no surprise, taking the top spot is a state many travelers overlook, yet it’s one of the most affordable and culturally rich states to visit, and you don’t have to pack your favorite sweater unless you want to, as TimeOut claims New Mexico temps average 72 across the board.

Fall is jam-packed with fun things to do — whether you’re diving into UFO lore, booking a stay in a centuries-old adobe, exploring stunning nature without the beaming desert sun, or celebrating one of America’s unique festivals.

New Mexico: TimeOut’s Top U.S. Destination This Fall

New Mexico is home to some of America’s most storied towns, no matter if it’s former goldmine rushes, Wild West shootouts, or an alleged crashed site of little green beings.

Today, New Mexico can be considered the Southwest’s last frontier. You don’t see many changes in this underrated state’s most sought-after getaways — maybe a new restaurant, but rarely any shifting skylines.

Laden with astounding mountains spreading from Las Cruces, New Mexico’s second largest city, all the way north to Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and the delightful UNESCO-protected town of Taos, there’s no shortage of ways to traverse the magic of the “Land of Enchantment”.

In between, there are cozy mountain towns, relaxing hot springs, and roadside must-stops like Hatch, the “Chile Capital of the World”.

In other words, New Mexico is perfect for road trips. No matter if you fly into Albuquerque, Santa Fe, or even the corner of Texas, El Paso to start from Las Cruces and work your way up, the only traffic jams are tumbleweeds and loose cattle.

TimeOut recommends the following destinations this fall:

As someone who used to visit New Mexico every month (and who thinks Albuquerque is a snoozefest), I can’t help but reveal 3 getaways TimeOut didn’t highlight.

Living in El Paso, I was fortunate to be at a crosspoint of cultures — Texas 🤠, Mexico 🌮, and New Mexico 🌶️.

As such, venturing across state lines was easy, and honestly one of the most scenic getaways this side of the States.

Mesilla:

Under an hour from El Paso International Airport lies the map-dot village of Mesilla.

This tiny hideaway was a monthly escape for me to indulge in New Mexico’s under-hyped cuisine, peruse local shops, and enjoy gorgeous hikes winding through the nearby Organ Mountains.

Double Eagle makes a mean spicy marg and their stuffed jalapenos aren’t for the faint of heart — but hey, you’re in pepper country.

The historic main plaza is anchored by a quaint, timeless cathedral known as the Basilica of San Albino and wrapped by inviting local boutiques and insightful museums you can spend hours perusing.

Taos:

If Santa Fe tops your New Mexico wishlist, that’s all fine and dandy. Though if you want to feel a true step back in time, the best alternative in my eyes is Taos.

A walk through town feels like a living museum lined with a UNESCO-protected townscape of traditional adobe homes and picturesque plazas.

Plus, if you’re like me and not a big fan of “Albu-quirky”, visit the Taos Mountain Balloon Rally instead (held Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 this year).

Taos is one of New Mexico’s prettiest destinations for leaf-peepers, too. Ride through the Enchanted Circle for the best photo-ops of luminous aspen groves.

Ruidoso:

Ruidoso is a rustic mountain town to enjoy fall splendor away from the city grind, though it’s been plagued by natural disasters in recent years.

As of July 25, locals’ favorite getaway officially announced it’s embracing tourists after being ravaged by floods and previous wildfires, but storms have caused more havoc this month, so there may be another update in store.

Fall is typically one of the best times to visit to enjoy gold aspens, cool hiking weather, and cozy lodges to curl up by the fireplace.

There are 2 stunning lakes in the area for scenic strolls and fishing, but Inn of the Mountain Gods has another lake with boat rides — and it’s arguably the most popular stay in town, drawing big-name performers for live shows, including Luke Bryan.

North America’s last remaining French territories are indubitably France, just set in an entirely different landscape than you envision France to be.

Equally tranquil as it is lively, it may be small, but there’s enough room to escape the action-packed town center and enjoy the serenity of the surrounding scenery.

While many Americans are unaware this enchanting slice of France is so close, many Canadians visit throughout the year as it’s a stone’s throw from Newfoundland.

As such, neither Saint Pierre nor Miquelon are strangers to tourists, and there are plenty of guided tours to enjoy.

But most of all, the bar scene is something out of a movie, where locals and tourists alike share in a common accustom known as Le verre de l’amitié, essentially translating to “a toast to friendship”, proving we can all indeed get along if we so choose.

Miquelon, on the other hand, is more for nature enthusiasts to explore and where the island’s incredible local cuisine derives from, in many cases – lobsters, scallops, and yes, even controversial foie gras (banned in some U.S. states).

Guided tours are offered here as well, but unlike Saint Pierre, a majority of tours are nature-related, such as scenic hikes like The Cormorandière Valley walk for about $25.

Getting Here And Where To Stay

Unfortunately, there are no direct flights from the U.S. However, an easy one-stop flight through Canada is doable.

Saint Pierre And Miquelon has direct flights from its own airline, Air Saint Pierre, from the following Canadian cities:
- Montreal (definitely the easiest connection!)
- Halifax
- St. John’s

Doesn’t it feel like the world is getting smaller and smaller? Like finding off-path destinations is a daunting task?

On the downside, there are no direct flights from the U.S., but easy connections make the journey worthwhile.

It’s time to give credit where credit is due and put the gorgeous island of San Andres, Colombia on the map this year.

One Of Colombia’s Safest Destinations

San Andres is a bit confusing to the eye at first glance.

Closer to mainland Nicaragua than Colombia, this South American island can easily be labeled Central America, but it is indeed a Colombian paradise in the Caribbean Sea.

Given Colombia’s iffy reputation right now across the country between U.S. travel security warnings and our own on-the-ground reporting, San Andres makes for one of the safest escapes in the nation.

Petty crime can happen anywhere, and there are reports of sketchy San Andres streets after a night of bar-hopping, but nowhere near the frequent occurrences that are often reported in the likes of Medellin, Bogota, and Cali.

The phrase ‘No Dar Papaya’ commonly used by locals is good to know anywhere in the country, which essentially means don’t give a reason to be sought out by criminals.

This idyllic vacation spot won’t have your head on a swivel wondering who is behind you; you can experience a blissful vacation in one of the most underrated beach destinations in Latin America.

World Class All-Inclusive Resorts

Mexico and other popular Caribbean getaways are not the only options for lavish all-inclusive stays. Plus, doesn’t vacationing on an island make the trip all the more alluring?

Here in San Andres, vacationers have at least 10 resorts to choose from for all-inclusive waterfront accommodations.

Many luxury hotels are packed in to the scenic northeastern tip of this small island near the cruise port.

Although, travelers can opt for more secluded stays wrapped around the stunning coastline from north to south.

Visiting an island paradise wouldn’t feel right without planning some much-needed beach days. While some resorts overlook the eye-popping blue waters, seeking out beaches away from resorts may be the best way to go.

Playa San Luis is set away from busy bars and high-end resorts with sprawling white sand, coral reefs and colorful traditional homes dotted along the scenic coast.

Further south is Playa Charquitos perfect for a relaxing day with less crowds and coconut stands to immerse yourself into island life living.

But perhaps the best of all is Johnny Cay – a tiny blip on the map just north of San Andres. Easily reached by boat, this tiny island lined with calm blue waters, white sand, palm trees, fresh made-to-order seafood and live reggae performances is the pinnacle of an island escape.

Multiple resorts and tour operators offer a plethora of water activities, including the unique ‘Walking Under The Sea Experience’ taking you to the seafloor for 25 minutes of aquatic wildlife viewing.

If that’s too off-the-wall, snorkeling, kayaking and private boat or jet ski rentals may be more up your alley.

Best Ways To Reach San Andres

Americans will have to factor in at least one air connection unless arriving by cruise, which are limited in their own right.

The good news is travelers can connect from popular Latin America hubs without adding significant time to your travels.

But, make sure to grab a window seat to witness the Sea of Seven Colors before landing – a variety of colorful ocean hues attributed to the coral reefs in the region.

The easiest flight connections will be through Panama City, Bogota or Medellin, while budget airline Wingo also connects through Cartagena and Barranquilla.

As an added bonus, the airport of San Andres is so conveniently located you can walk to your resort or grab a bite to eat and avoid transportation costs.

Sometimes travelers tend to look beyond what’s right at home when seeking an awesome trip.

With all the hoops travelers had to jump through simply to have a passport after the world shut down, it’s easy to see why it’s so tempting to use it.

There are still places not often discussed as top getaways, with one being the smallest state in America.

Springtime is great to take the Rhode less traveled. No, we’re not talking about the phenomenal Greek island of Rhodes, as incredible as it may be.

We’re talking about the delightful gem of New England – the pint-sized state of Rhode Island.

Phenomenal Stays

Easily overlooked, yet loved by those who visit, Rhode Island is the runt of a litter of 50. Often overshadowed by the familiar household names of the East Coast, it’s Rhode Island’s time to shine this spring.

One key reason is the drop-dead gorgeous coastal town of Newport, often the cream of the crop of any Rhode Island trip.

With winter coming to a close sooner rather than later, Newport is a springtime treasure filled with luxury.

It may not be on the same playing field as, say, Beverly Hills, but many celebrities own multi-million dollar mansions in the vicinity, such as Jay Leno and America’s unofficial Queen, Taylor Swift.

This is just the tip of the iceberg as the town of Newport exudes charm and luxury along amazing coastlines.

Vacationers have so many options to choose from for a luxurious stay, but the newly revamped Newport Harbor Island Resort takes the cake after a $50 million facelift.

Set to open April 15th, the resort calls nearby Goat Island home, which is ironic considering Rhode Island is not really a proper island.

The Charm Of Newport

If you have heard of anyone paying Newport a visit, the coastal town is at its peak for tourism in the summer months.

Lined with beautiful scenery along the coast with plentiful nice beaches with some walkable from downtown’s charming streets.

Besides driving around ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the seemingly endless mega-mansions, the top attraction of Newport is, inarguably, the Cliff Walk, with picture-perfect views.

Since Newport gets jam-packed with tourists in summer, spring is an amazing time to visit and take in all the sites with more elbow room.

The town center is very walkable with lovely shops, local eats, and vibrant historic buildings. Plus, the splendid weather is an added bonus, especially from late April through May.

New Cheap Flights

Any time we consider traveling to a new place, the question “how much is it?” surely comes up. While flying directly into Boston is quite popular to reach Rhode Island, the capital city does have a variety of flight options.

Providence is very nice on its own and home to one of America’s few Ivy League Universities – Brown University.

A mix of small-town charm, college town, and culture of a big city with neighborhoods like Little Italy, Providence is fun in its own right with all the makings for a weekend getaway.

No matter if you’re going to Newport or not, Providence is worthy of a stop at the very least, especially to check out the one-of-a-kind Waterfire event kicking off in April.

Reaching the state has never been easier with the expansion of low-cost airline Breeze Airways’ new direct flights into Providence from all of the U.S., from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh, and many more.

The latest flight routes by Breeze will service Providence (PVD) this spring from Greenville/Spartanburg on May 3rd and Cincinnati, Columbus, and Denver on May 16th.

Sun Country and Allegiant also fly here for budget travelers. Southwest will also offer new flights from Dallas and Denver beginning June 8th.

Montezuma Castle National Monument, Arizona

Mexico is the go-to country for U.S. citizens flying abroad, and while it’s true the whole country is packed with tourist attractions and breathtaking sights, there are three cities that stand out as America’s preferred vacation destinations, regardless of travel season, due to their year-round warmer weather, the hospitality of the locals, vast tourist offer and vibrant multiculturalism.

The Southern Neighbor has come out of the health crisis stronger than ever before: it has always been a tourism powerhouse, drawing in millions of tourists every year prior to 2020, but it is breaking every imaginable record in the current era. It has hosted over 30 million visitors in 2022, and further growth is expected for 2023 when an even greater number of Americans is expected to travel.

We already knew 25% of them will be heading to Mexico this year, but now we also know which cities they’re most likely to fly to:

The Leading Tourist Destinations In Mexico

According to recent research conducted by Grupo Empresarial Estrategia, three of Mexico’s coastal cities saw a 12.6% increase in arrivals in the first seven months of 2022 jointly compared to 2019. In actual numbers, this translates as 8.4 million passengers or 23.3% of Mexico’s tourism figures at that point.

In a country where the tourism offer is impossibly vast, comprising Magical Towns, colonial-era destinations, and an extensive coastline, keeping up the momentum is hard, but these three cities have proven yet again their reign is only starting. Further supporting the earlier findings, new data from Allianz Travel confirmed them as the top destinations for Americans traveling abroad in early February.

As seen in the study, which focuses mostly on travel data for Valentine’s Day but encompasses the wider period of February 2 up to February 13, during the peak season in Mexico, the country is the most popular vacation option for Americans flying internationally. More specifically, the exact same destinations that had been named Mexico’s most powerful triad last year.

Officially, the top three vacation spots Americans are completely obsessed with are:

Cancun

Cancun is the busiest hub in the state of Quintana Roo, and a highly sought-after destination for mainly one reason: it offers easy access to the wider Riviera Maya, a gorgeous sandy strip extending along the Eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, home to some of Mexico’s top-rated five-star resorts, a busy nightlife, the clearest beaches in the entire country, and seas that are turquoise blue.

It does have its flaws, especially when it comes to overpricing and the quality of the service amid higher demand, as well as the occasional presence of sargassum, which blankets the coast from April through October, but it remains a world-class destination. Demand has been so high and air traffic so intense eGates were opened to speed up the processing of passengers early this year.

Los Cabos

Located at the very tip of the Baja California peninsula, the ‘Capes’, or Los Cabos, are a dual destination including the neighboring cities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, which are both famous for their well-developed wellness scene and stunning nature – think the iconic arch-shaped rock formation rising out of the Pacific, golden sands and lush marine parks.

As a single entity, Los Cabos is the fastest-growing destination in all of Mexico, surpassing Cancun’s own growth rate. Last year, it posted a 24% increase in arrival figures, claiming the title of Mexico’s second most popular coastal spot. Its soaring popularity is attributed to a host of luxurious hotels and spa facilities and a laid-back atmosphere – contrasting with Cancun’s chaotic party scene.

Puerto Vallarta

The gorgeous capital of the state of Jalisco, Puerto Vallarta’s skyline is one of the most easily recognized in Mexico. It features a rose-colored cathedral spire rising above a Spanish-built cobblestone Old Town, dramatically set against the backdrop of the Pacific ocean. Wandering the streets, visitors are met with a surprising mix of old and new.

The old buildings in the Centro Historico will offer them a glimpse of Mexico’s bygone colonial era, and the riches of the now-defunct Spanish Empire, under which Puerto Vallarta existed, while the well-frequented, palm tree-lined Malecon promenade, filled with restaurants and trendy bars, serves as a reminder it is far from being just another boring open-air museum: it is youthful, fun, and full of life.

A Powerhouse Trio

Regardless of the holiday period and season, these three cities will continue leading booking trends. It is not a mere coincidence, and it is a pretty rare, impressive feat. For instance, it is quite normal for bookings to surge in the European market over summer, as Americans fly in their droves to the Mediterranean – or the newly-discovered Black Sea – to soak up the culture.

As the cold months approach, however, inbound travel from America decreases significantly – the European South is, after all, a seasonal favorite. Mexico’s triad, on the other hand, is busy year-round: even though numbers tend to dwindle in the off-season, they are still high enough for incoming passengers to struggle with higher rates and lower room availability in a number of areas.

Other fast-growing destinations in Mexico that should be on your list include Isla Mujeres, a scenic island off the Cancun coast, Lake Bacalar, touted as the new Tulum – except it’s far more authentic and has not been ruined by overtourism – and Merida, a colonial gem famous for its colorful 18th and 19th century buildings and Spanish heritage.

As reported by local media, Isla Mujeres has become one of the leading destinations in the state of Quintana Roo, which comprises most of the Mexican Caribbean, largely thanks to a successful promotional campaign headed by the local government – and of course, its own hospitality outlook. The news were shared during the Día Nacional de los Pueblos Mágicos.

The commemorative date celebrates achievements of 132 towns across Mexico that have distinguished themselves as sites of both historical and cultural importance. This year, it saw Isla Mujeres, one of these magical ‘pueblos’, tower high above other competitors in the same category due to its post-pandemic hotel occupancy.

According to figures released by Sedetur, Mexico’s equivalent to a Tourism Board earlier in the year, Isla Mujeres was already one of the best performing in the Mexican Caribbean during the first yearly quarter, way before the last surviving Covid mandates in Mexico fell – at times, it even surpassed the mighty Cancun.

In the first three months of the present year, which comprised the last high season for Mexican tourism, Isla Mujeres had an occupancy rate of 71.2%, higher even than the Cancun-Puerto Morelos duo at 70.73%. It still couldn’t beat Cozumel (71.77%), but it got pretty close to snatching the crown as the Riviera Maya’s fastest recovering municipality in early 2022.

Trend Continued Well Into The Summer Months

This trend was repeated over summer, when the insular gem experienced a ‘boom’ in bookings, with an average 180,000-200,000 tourists monthly. According to José Castillo Magaña, the island has succeeded in having ‘record occupations’ that even exceed the pre-pandemic levels. On certain occasions, occupancy was as high as 85 percent.

Of course, in terms of guests, Cancun remains a force to be reckoned with, being currently projected to be used as an entry point into Mexico by as much as 25 million tourists by year’s end. Although many will land in, and fulfill their vacations in Cancun, others will have onward tickets to other spots along or off the coast, including Isla Mujeres.

In early June, there were already up to 12,000 hotel rooms available, and an approximate 3,000 more would be added ‘until the end of 2022’, proving demand remains at an all-time high. As Magaña sees it, Isla Mujeres is positioning itself as a consolidated tourist hub, both due to the quality of services provided and ‘warmth’ of the islanders.

With multiple ferries departing daily from the continent, it is both a highly sought-after day trip, due to the exclusivity it provides being an island, as well as a resourceful final destination.

What Makes Isla Mujeres So Popular?

Located only 13 km from the Cancun coast, Isla Mujeres is home to incredibly pristine beaches, including Playa Norte, repeatedly ranked among the most beautiful in the world, and that’s been recently named ‘the best beach‘ in all of Mexico. It beats other regional contenders, like Playa Delfines in Cancun and Playa Paradiso in Tulum.

It has also been recently voted the second best island destination in North America by the renowned travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler. Besides, it is part of the reason why the Mexican Caribbean’s has had surprising September numbers, a period when tourism usually slows down following the end of the school holidays.

We cannot predict whether this growing popularity will extend into the upcoming high season, namely the months of December through April, especially now that the looming recession and cost of living crisis is making it harder for the average American to go abroad and splurge on a Mexican all-inclusive, but one thing’s for certain:

South America’s First Digital Nomad Village Will Open In Brazil

South America’s first-ever digital nomad village is set to open in Brazil, where remote workers will be able to base themselves as they explore one of the continent’s most exciting and culturally diverse countries. However, if you’re thinking tourist cliches like Rio or Sao Paulo have been selected as host cities, you are in for a big surprise.

Having spent two and a half years mostly sealed off from the rest of the world, Brazil is now keen on boosting tourism and being ahead of the curve when it comes to the latest travel trends. One of them is digital nomadism, a lifestyle that’s exploding in popularity in the post-Covid world, and on which the nation is banking on to boost its economy.

Having announced its own Digital Nomad Visa recently, it seems South America’s largest nation is preparing to become a major nomad hotspot:

First, Why Brazil

The Nomad Village Brazil is a project run by the Portugal-based startup Nomad X, who identified the country, with which the European nation has close historical ties to, as the ideal location for building a digital worker hub. Of course, the kinship between Portugal and Brazil is not the only reason for this favoritism:

Europe may have come out ahead of other markets by opening up to nomadism a lot sooner, with Croatia being one of the first in the world to launch a specific visa for this category, but unlike Brazil, where the sun shines all year round, the Old Continent normally gets chilly and grey in the long winter months. Yes, even in the Mediterranean.

Even in the low season, coastal states in Brazil, especially in the North, still record temperatures well above 30 degrees, making it an ideal place for long-term travelers looking for somewhere warmer to linger a while longer. Interestingly, NomadX didn’t pick ‘The Wonderful City’, namely Rio, to welcome guests.

Instead, they are setting up the village in the unheard-of Pipa, a small coastal town in Northeastern Brazil where some of the country’s most breathtakingly beautiful beaches are located. Branding it an ‘escape’ from the harsh Northern Hemisphere winter, the company has picked Pipa’s Morada dos Ventos guest house to welcome participants.

A Cozy, Picturesque Retreat Nestled In Northeastern Brazil

The picturesque property is located in a natural setting only 800 meters from the gorgeous Amor Beach, and a 13-minute walk from the landmark Pipa Beach, the area’s main attraction. It features 3 pools, tropical gardens adorned with sky-high coconut trees, and bungalow-style apartments with varying levels of comfort. In sum, just the perfect nomad haven.

The guest house will serve this purpose from November 1, 2022 to April 23, 2023, comprising the Brazilian summer and some of the hottest months in the calendar year. Pre-registration is also open, and nomads can already secure their slots through the Nomad Village Brazil official website, where more information can be accessed.

How Can Nomads Get To Pipa?

The nearest airport to the place is Sao Gonçalo do Amarante International, serving the city of Natal, some 62 miles away. Currently, the only international flights arriving in Natal originate from Lisbon, Portugal, meaning there are no direct links from North America. Still, Americans can easily reach it via short layovers.

Brazil’s main entry points are in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, both only 3h10 or 3h20 away from Natal by plane. Yes, it’s a bit trickier to get to, but once you’re there, trust us, you won’t ever want to leave. As you might have realized, this is a pretty unusual location to set up a nomad village, far from Brazil’s busy urban centers and traditional tourist route.

On the other hand, the Brazilian Northeast is also where the country’s most scenic coastline is found, lined with up-and-coming tourist spots like Jericoacoara and Canoa Quebrada. Pipa itself is famous for its energetic nightlife and Bohemian vibe, known to attract thousands of tourists, both from neighboring municipalities and abroad, every year.

In fact, its relative remoteness is precisely what makes it an enticing destination: without being in a big, sprawling city where making meaningful connections can be more challenging, guests will be able to interact, and exchange experiences, much more easily, besides being surrounded by the stunning Brazilian nature in a quieter setting.

What Are The Conditions For Applying To Live In Brazil As A Digital Nomad?

Anyone who satisfies all of the requirements below can apply to live in Brazil for up to two years as a digital nomad:
- Have earnings of more than $1,500 per month, either as entrepreneurs or employees of a foreign company
- A valid passport for the entirety of their time in Brazil
- Valid health insurance covering the intended stay
*It is worth noting citizens of Mercosur and Mercosur-associated countries, such as Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Colombia and others, already enjoy freedom of movement within Brazil and do not need to apply for visas working in the country

Although the Digital Nomad Village has an end date, as of now, it may well be extended into the future should it prove successful. Naturally, visitors wishing to stay longer can make their own private reservations for dates beyond April 2023, or move base elsewhere in the country (these 4 off path Brazilian cities could be a good starting point).
