Why This European Capital Is Surprisingly My Favorite Solo Female Travel Destination

Europe is one of the safest and easiest regions to explore as a solo female traveler.

So if you want to explore the world, then there’s no need to wait for someone to go with you.

Just go it alone!

I’ve visited dozens of cities solo, but this unexpected European capital captured my heart. Its rich history, affordable prices, and excellent safety record all mean that it’s a city I would love to visit again and again.

Here’s why this European capital is my favorite solo female travel destination:

An Underrated Travel Destination

Warsaw is such an underrated travel destination, and despite being the capital of Poland, many travelers prefer to visit Krakow instead. In fact, Krakow is the most popular tourist destination in Poland.

Despite this, Warsaw is my favorite solo female travel destination for so many reasons.

Warsaw is varied and beautiful and you’ll find history on every corner.

As an official history nerd, I found it a fascinating place to explore.

You can see the remains of the city’s Ghetto Wall or wander around the newest Old Town in Europe.

So much of Warsaw’s Old Town was destroyed during WWII that it was almost completely reconstructed in the post-war era.

But the reconstruction is so faithful to the original that you almost forget you’re not exploring ancient history.

The best way to find out more about the impact WWII had on the city is with a tour, especially if you’re flying solo.

I took a tour of the Warsaw Ghetto and learned so much about the horrors that impacted the history of Jewish people both in the city and in wider Europe.

Warsaw’s detractors often mention its ugly Soviet-era buildings, but even these are interesting in their own way.

The Palace of Culture and Science was Stalin’s last gift to the city before the iron curtain fell.

My hotel was right next door, and if you’re nearby I recommend paying the 20 PLN ($5) to visit the building’s 30^th floor observation deck and enjoy the views of the city.

There’s so much to see and do in the city and it is this abundance of activity that makes Warsaw one of my favorite travel spots.

Safe And Secure

Warsaw is a destination with an impeccable safety record. I felt incredibly safe and secure in the city as a solo female traveler, even at night while having a cocktail or two.

Warsaw isn’t known for having the most happening nightlife scene in Europe but there are plenty of places to let your hair down. I recommend The Roots Cocktail Bar which is the number 1 cocktail bar in the city according to Tripadvisor and according to me!

The city is well-lit, there is a visible police presence across the city after hours, and the locals are helpful and friendly (if not a little blunt).

While I felt safe walking back to my hotel at night, the city has an amazing public transportation system that gives you easy and safe transport from pretty much anywhere in the city at all hours.

Don’t feel comfortable using public transportation as a solo female traveler?

I’ve never been in a city where traveling by Uber is so affordable! A 20-minute Uber ride cost me just 25 PLN ($6).

There are also plenty of electric scooters on almost every street corner, and it’s easy to download the relevant app and hop on. There are several different companies available, but I used Bolt because they offered a 50% discount on your first 3 journeys.

The U.S. Department of State has given Poland a Level 1 travel advisory which is the lowest level available, and is a clear sign of just how safe the country is.

While you should exercise normal precautions, such as keeping an eye on your bag in crowds, spending time in Warsaw is likely to be just as safe as spending time in your home city.

And feeling safe is so important when traveling solo.

Great For Budget Travelers

Warsaw is a great spot for budget travelers.

I’ve already mentioned just how cheap nearly every kind of transportation is which means that getting around will barely put a dent in your budget.

Want to see as much of the city as possible without opening your wallet?

There are a huge choice of city tours offered by locals available in English completely free of charge. Just make sure you have some cash to tip your tour guide.

Other free activities worth enjoying in Warsaw include enjoying the laser show at the Fountain Park, visiting the city’s many parks and green spaces, and many of Warsaw’s museums are free too.

You’ll find live street performances in the Old Town and across the city’s parks no matter what the time of year.

Art lovers will be fascinated by Warsaw’s murals and street art which are on some of the cities most prominent locations.

You can see the work of world-famous street artists in every district of Warsaw.

Accommodation options are affordable, and the price of food and drink is incredibly cheap too.

I paid just 11 PLN ($2.70) for a cake and coffee break, 40 PLN ($10) for an artisan pizza and 8 PLN ($2) for a pastry and bottle of water from a local bakery.

Entrance to the Royal Palace cost 50 PLN ($12.60) and this was the most expensive activity I signed up for in the city.

Warsaw is a great place to travel if you don’t want to worry about breaking the bank or checking price tags. And a great place for solo female travelers.

This New Sleeper Train Will Connect 4 European Capital Cities

Train travel in Europe is becoming an incredibly popular trend. Not only is it more environmentally friendly, it is also a great way to see fantastic views that you might otherwise miss.

In May of this year The European Sleeper launched a new night train. This train travels from Brussels to Amsterdam and then to Berlin.

The route has been incredibly successful, and now The European Sleeper is planning to extend its route and connect 4 European capital cities.

These are the cities you can visit:

Which Cities Can You Visit?

From March 25 2024 the night train route will not only visit Brussels, Amsterdam, and Berlin. It will also be extended to Dresden and Prague.

This means that the service will connect 4 European capital cities giving travelers more options. The new service will make 18 stops in total.

It will depart from Brussels at 19.22 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and arrive in the Czech Republic at 10.56 the following day.

It will depart from Prague at 18.04 on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. It will then arrive in Brussels at 09.27 the following day.

European Sleeper are preparing to launch several other new night train routes if this new route is successful. They have plans to expand their network both in the short and the long term.

The Good Night Train

The European Sleeper train is also known as The Good Night Train. It offers 3 different sleeping options depending on your budget.

The most comfortable and expensive option is the sleeper carriage. There are a maximum of 3 beds in each compartment and compartments can be booked as single, double, or triple options.

Each compartment includes a washbasin, seats and table, a comfortable mattress, wake-up calls, breakfast, and a welcome drink.

The Couchette carriages are the mid-level option. These carriages are multifunctional, containing seats during the day that fold down to 6 comfortable couchettes at night.

These compartments can be booked as a 6-person, 4-person, or private compartment. Breakfast and mineral water are included.

The most affordable option for budget travelers is the seating carriages. These have 6 seats in each compartment and can be booked individually or as a private compartment for parties of 6.

Why Travel In Europe By Train?

If you want to travel from country to country in Europe, it can be tempting just to book an airline ticket. But there are a huge number of benefits to traveling by train instead.

Traveling in Europe by train is easy, comfortable, scenic, and efficient. Train seats tend to be much wider and more comfortable than plane seats which is particularly important if you’re traveling overnight.

There are also very few luggage restrictions if you travel by train which means you won’t be stung with excess luggage charges if you’re carrying oversized bags.

You can take advantage of amazing views and more space to stretch your legs. And even during the dusk of a sleeper train, you’ll be amazed by how many of the countries you pass through that you’ll actually get to see.

One of the best benefits of intercity train travel in Europe is that train stations tend to be in the heart of the city center, while airports tend to be out of the city and in the suburbs. This will make it easy to get to your accommodation quickly without any hassle, queues in baggage reclaim, or expensive transfers.

It’s also worth noting that if you’re traveling on a budget, then the night you spend on a sleeper train is a night of hotel accommodation that you don’t need to pay for. Meaning that traveling by train really is a win-win!

Travelers from all over the world are flocking to a fully open Asia for longer, multi-country trips this year.

U.S. travelers in particular are looking east this year. According to data from travel app Hopper, all three of this past summer’s top trending destinations among U.S. tourists were Asian cultural capitals.

Seoul, South Korea is a major destination leading this trend. In fact, Seoul is the 11th most popular city in the world for international tourists, according to Mastercard’s Global Destinations Cities Index.

The number of tourists to South Korea quadrupled at the beginning of this year, with a total of 4.4 million visitors to the country as of this June. According to experts, that number is expected to double by the end of the year.

So, why is the South Korean capital more popular now than ever before?

Here are four reasons why Seoul is now one of the most popular destinations in the world:

Trendy Revival of Seochon Neighborhood

The 500-year-old neighborhood of Seochon has changed a lot since its heyday in the Joseon era.

Today, the historical neighborhood has been restored and revived, creating an irresistible mix of authenticity and modernity.

An infusion of trendy new businesses and an influx of young creative Koreans has breathed new life into Seochon over the last few years. Narrow curving alleyways lined with traditional Korean homes (hanok) of polished dark wood and white stone give way to creative shops and popular corner cafes.

Tourists are drawn to the authentic atmosphere of the village. Local food stall owner Jo Gyeonghwan told CNA Luxury, “If you explore the alleys, you can see renovated hanok-style cafes and restaurants which cannot be easily found in other areas.”

Recently restored homestays are marketed to travelers looking for a unique traditional experience in a vibrant area. Architect Park Jung Hyun has been remodeling these homes for many years. With trendy styles “ranging from a Korean-Scandinavian design to an earthy-modernist hideout,” these renovated hanoks offer something for every kind of traveler.

Seoul Set-Jetting

This year, more travelers than ever before are choosing their destinations based on their favorite TV series and movies in a red-hot travel trend known as “set-jetting.”

XO, Kitty, a spin-off of the record-breaking American Netflix series To All The Boys, recently held the #3 slot in Netflix’s top 10 rankings and generated a cult-like fan following. A first of its kind, the series draws key inspiration from popular K-dramas while keeping things accessible in an English language format. The series is set almost entirely in Seoul and features a few of the city’s famous landmarks.

Fans of the uber-popular series are flocking from the U.S., Europe, and beyond to the South Korean capital to see where some of its most epic scenes were filmed. The most iconic spots from the series include the love locks at the N Seoul Tower and the Grand Hyatt Seoul.

And it’s not just XO, Kitty bringing Western tourists to the sites of their favorite Korean shows.

According to the New York Times, 60% of global Netflix users have watched a Korean-language TV show or film. (Earlier this year, Extraordinary Attorney Woo – an inspirational series about an autistic lawyer– skyrocketed into Netflix’s top 10 in over 50 countries.)

Data from Expedia shows that two-thirds of travelers have considered taking a trip based on their favorite shows. With the wildfire of international fandom of Korean series and movies, the set-jetting trend will probably continue to lean in Seoul’s favor.

Tik Tok Tourism and Gen Z Trends

Yep, it’s another TikTok sensation driving a tourism boom.

‘Personal Color Analysis’ is the latest craze – and it’s got travelers running right to Seoul. In a 60-minute consultation, experts figure out what colors of clothes, makeup, accessories, and hair are most flattering to your skin tone.

According to TIME, the topic “personal color analysis Korea” has 375 million TikTok views.

While the service has been around for decades for public figures, the Korean beauty industry has been leading the charge in making it accessible to everyday people.

Like many other beauty and cosmetic services, personal color analysis prices in Seoul are up to 70% lower than in other major cities like New York or L.A., making it a motivating factor for international tourism.

In fact, so many tourists are coming to Seoul for this service that the Korean Tourism Organization set up a pop-up color analysis studio in New York’s Rockefeller Center this summer. Unsurprisingly, it was a massive hit – especially among Gen Z.

New Direct Flights

Today, it’s easier than ever to fly to the South Korean capital. While Seoul’s Incheon Airport has long been a key international flight hub, it’s seeing a surge in new routes from all over the world these days.

United Airlines increased their flights from San Francisco to Seoul by 70% earlier this year, while Virgin Atlantic teased new routes for next year.

Some budget airlines are promising prices 20% lower than full-service carriers like Korean Air and Asiana, making Seoul more accessible to travelers on a lower budget. Low-cost carrier Air Premia also launched a new route from Newark to Seoul this past May, while Northern Pacific Airlines plans to offer more affordable flights to Seoul and other Asian destinations via Alaska by the end of this year.

In Europe, Prague Airport launched new direct flights to Seoul at the start of the summer season. In Australia, Jetstar also launched a long-awaited service from Sydney to Seoul a few months ago. Asian destinations like Vietnam, Japan, and Singapore also added new routes from both full-service and low-cost carriers.

As airlines all over the world scramble to meet increased demand for flights to Seoul, it’s safe to say we’re not the only ones seeing this Asian capital’s popularity skyrocket!

Spain Is Now Europe’s Rail Capital: Here’s How To Get Around On Its Train Network

The world’s most populated country, China, holds the title for the world’s largest network of high-speed railways (around 23,500 miles), but you might be surprised by which country takes the second spot – Spain. Representing over 10% of China’s network, the country has just added a third fast train operator to its system, which has further cemented its spot as the number one longest rail network in Europe.

The introduction of the high-speed rail service, “iryo,” will make Spain’s rail network even cheaper and faster. With its trains running up to speeds of 223 miles per hour, high-speed trains have increasingly become an aggressive competitor to airlines and have been known to assist in sending national airlines broke, such as what happened in Italy with Alitalia. Spain’s new network will run operations between Madrid, Barcelona, and Zaragoza, with later routes being announced in mid-December and next year, including Madrid, Cuenca, and Valencia.

“It is great to see how commercially driven Open Access services – such as iryo — are making long-distance rail more attractive and winning travelers away from less sustainable transport modes, namely airlines and cars,” said Nick Brooks, secretary general of the Alliance of Passenger Rail New Entrants in Europe.

Where Can I Travel By Train in Spain?

Train services operate across all of Spain’s major towns and cities, meaning you’ll be able to travel by train to your favorite destinations without the hassle of short flights. You’ll be easily able to visit top locations such as Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Seville, Malaga, Pamplona, Santander, and Santiago de Compostela, all in a matter of hours.

Are High-Speed Trains Cheaper Than Flights?

When comparing mid-December availability for trains from Barcelona to Madrid, tickets for iryo start at around €30 (U.S. $31). The trip time is around 2 hours and 45 minutes, while driving would take 6 hours. Renfe is the more expensive option, with tickets ranging from around 50 to 120 euros (US $52- 104) for a basic fare, although you can grab some cheaper tickets if you book an early morning time; or you might meet the conditions to travel on Renfe for free, which is an initiative to lure tourists and help relieve residents up until the end of 2023.

Spain also offers more budgeted train options, with tickets on avlo starting at 7 euros (around US $7) and ouigo starting at around 15 euros (around US $15). When booking in advance, you can save money by scoring some cheap tickets.

When compared to flights within the country, the national airline Iberia offers flights in December for around US $50, which takes under 1 hour and 15 minutes. When you factor in additional transport costs getting to the airport, plus the time arriving at the airport before boarding, the train and air end up being similar in time duration, with select services being a quarter of the cost.

If you’re going to be taking multiple routes in a period, it’s recommended to grab a travel pass to save some money. Renfe offers travel passes for non-residents starting at 195 euros (US $203) for 4 trips, or you can grab a Eurail pass starting at U.S. $170 for 3 travel days in one month.

What’s The Process For Booking Tickets?

Like airlines, you will need to reserve your ticket even if seating is not allocated, so don’t expect to just turn up. Train companies also come with different classes with different fare options and comfort levels (keep reading below to see how these fares are applied).

You can buy all tickets either online through your desktop or mobile at the individual train company’s site with no booking fee, but keep in mind some of the sites have some confusing translations. Currently, on iryo’s website, you need to use the Google translate option with your browser, and some sites are known to have issues accepting international credit cards.

There are third-party sites, which are much easier to use, but these do take a small booking fee. These include thetrainline.com, raileurope.com, omio.com, and petrbax.com, which all connect to the train lines’ ticket systems and will provide your ticket for boarding.

What Is The High-Speed Train Experience Like?

Depending on which train network you take and the class of ticket, traveling by train can be similarly compared to an airport, except the seats are a little larger, and you have options with tables and seats facing each other for groups. You can also walk around the train whenever you feel like it, and trains are typically on time in comparison to flights.
