Visiting Europe in spring is one of those things every avid traveler needs to experience at least once in a lifetime, but there’s one tiny problem keeping us back from setting off on the transatlantic getaway of our dreams – the cost.

While most European hotels and short-term rentals are reasonably priced, at least compared to similar places in the U.S., airfare can put a big dent in your travel budget—after all, you’re probably embarking on a 7+ hour flight, so paying extra is to be expected.

However, what if I told you that right now, you can fly to some of Europe’s biggest hubs and back for as little as $169?

That’s right, airfare to five of the biggest European hotspots has officially reached its yearly low, according to Skyscanner, so if you’re thinking about making 2024 the year when you finally take that long-awaited spring vacation across the Atlantic, these are some of the top destinations you’ll want to consider:

Paris

Let’s start off with Paris since it’s the capital of the most visited country on Earth and probably one of the highest-ticket items on your travel bucket list.

Round-trip tickets between the U.S. and the French capital start at just $270 this April.

The next time airfare rates will come close to this level again will be in November when the weather in the city is rainy and dreary, so budget-conscious travelers, you need to move fast!

And remember, these same exact tickets can sell for up to $500 or more come summer, especially this year, when Paris is hosting the 2024 Olympics, so timing your visit right can end up saving you hundreds if not thousands of dollars (if you’re traveling in a group of 5 or more people).

Vienna

The Austrian capital exudes a type of regal charm that’s just too hard to resist, and as someone lucky enough to have visited the city during spring, I can attest that the experience is truly worth every penny, especially when flight prices are as low as they are right now.

Vienna is usually even more expensive than Paris to travel to since the cheapest tickets you can access from the U.S. throughout most of the year hover around the $600 mark.

This April, however, some flights are available for just $372, and May tickets aren’t too far behind with a $404 price tag – definitely the lowest you’ll see in 2024.

Milan

Italy’s fashion capital just so happens to be a cultural marvel that turns into the ultimate playground for sightseers and art lovers this time of year.

Best of all, you can get to and from the Italian gem for just under $175 this April.

In May, airfare is set to get even lower, with tickets starting at $169.

If you’re trying to spend as little on travel as possible for your next European getaway, you can stop reading right now – you’ve found your winner!

Porto

As one of the trendiest European hubs of the moment, Porto has seen traveler interest skyrocket this past year, and since a good chunk of this ever-increasing interest is coming from U.S. tourists, flight prices are getting higher by the day.

However, you can still finally get your dream Portuguese experience without breaking the bank.

This April, round-trip flights start at $410, which, while not exactly cheap, is still way better than paying almost $800 for the same exact tickets come July.

Bucharest

Finishing off the list with a slightly more underrated destination, Bucharest promises travelers a delightfully unique experience this spring, characterized by the fascinating juxtaposition between communist-era buildings and Belle Époque palaces.

Now, most flights from the U.S. to Bucharest surpass the 10-hour mark, so it’s great to see that there’ll be some $450 round-trip tickets available for travelers this April.

From then on out, prices will gradually increase (May is the second-cheapest month of the year to fly to Bucharest, with tickets starting at $469) until they reach the $700-$800 mark, so if there’s one time to rush through those reservations, that time is now.

Home to a gorgeous Atlantic coast, where some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe can be found, ancient cities with origins lost to time, and a highly-reputed food scene, Portugal is currently one of the trendiest destinations for tourists across the pond.

Not only is it everything you’d expect a Southern European country to be, in terms of cultural offer and weather, but it is also renowned for being the cheapest of the bunch: it costs an average $1,033 to spend a week basking in the sun, and savoring your way through Portugal.

If the Iberian gem’s been on your radar for a while, and you’ve been wondering which Portuguese destinations will get you more bang for your buck – as well as blow your mind – these are 4 of the cheapest (and most incredible) spots:

Albufeira

The leading tourist destination in the sunny Algarve, mainland Portugal’s southernmost territory, Albufeira is nicknamed ‘Portuguese Santorini‘, due to its whitewashed Old Town resting on small cliffs facing the ocean, and bright blue shutters and doors.

Albufeira is both the nightlife capital of the Algarve and the gateway to its sandy coast.

It is teeming with tourists year-round, particularly Brits and Northern Europeans, and for a resort zone as lively and well-frequented, you’d assume prices would reflect the soaring demand.

That’s not necessarily the case, as tourists spend an average $1,305 for one week in Albufeira: the Velamar Boutique Hotel costs only $75 to book per night, while staying overnight at the adults-only Hotel California Urban Beach will set you back by an acceptable $132.

Naturally, you can go the all-inclusive resort or upscale restaurant route—there are plenty of those in Albufeira if you’re keen on splurging—but if you’re after a budget-friendly beach getaway, you will definitely find it here if you’re fine not getting pampered 24/7.

Porto Santo

We’ve all heard of Madeira at this point, the ‘Hawaii of Europe‘, but very little is said of its Maldives-like sister, the neighboring, much smaller Porto Santo, part of the same archipelago, where beaches are sandy instead of pebbly and the ocean’s a turquoise-blue.

Porto Santo is a natural oasis in the Atlantic, famous for its translucent waters, which rival the Indian Ocean in beauty, dramatic arid landscapes, year-round balmy weather due to its proximity to the African continent, and laid-back atmosphere.

While Madeira has become a globalized island, being home to multiple nationalities and hosting nonstop flights from America, Porto Santo is a lot more isolated, being served by a limited number of intra-Europe flights and Madeira ferries.

It’s somewhere you go for unwinding and soaking up nature, and for a destination as exclusive as this, you may be surprised to learn that you can find dormitory beds for as cheap as $29, only 450 meters from the beach, and double rooms in three-star hotels for a very reasonable $93.

The average hotel cost for a one-week stay in Porto Santo comes in at an affordable $744.

It’s not exactly cheap by Portuguese standards, but considering the complete lack of tourist crowds, the quality of the beaches, and the unlimited access to the wild nature, it’s a fair trade off.

Braga

Back to the Portuguese mainland, miles away from the resort-packed coast and the sunny islands, Braga is a historic city in the far north of the country, only reachable by train and best known for its religious importance and medieval heritage.

An imposing cathedral dominates the cobbled Old Town, and its adjacent Sacred Art Museum and landmark Kings’ Chapel, distinguished for being a textbook example of Gothic architecture, is sure to captivate history buffs.

Other attractions include well-preserved ancient walls, a neoclassical church perched atop a cascading stairway, possibly the most photographed in Portugal, and the lush Santa Barbara Garden, with its flower arrangements, and the nearby, monumental Archbishop’s Palace.

Fortunately for the culture-seekers, Braga is pretty affordable for a historically-charged city break of its status, with week-long stays setting travelers back $786 or a remarkably cheap $380 if you’re staying in shared dorms and eating in inexpensive local pastelarias.

Porto

The capital of Northern Portugal, the city of Porto has wooed passersby for years now, with its UNESCO-listed Historic Center, centuries-old tradition of wine-making, and fast-flowing Douro River, cutting through its very heart, providing an endless source of fascination.

Among some of the main Portenho landmarks, Clerigos Tower is perhaps the most noticeable one, rising above the maze of terracotta roofs below, though the iconic Dom Luis I Bridge, Lello Library, known to have inspired the Harry Potter saga, and the cathedral are not to be missed, either.

It is the only other Portuguese city that can stand up to Lisbon: it has Baroque churches that are just as ornate, a History that is just as ancient, and an equally vibrant multicultural scene.

With all the value it offers, the $59 you’ll spend per day visiting Porto on a budget sound like an absolute bargain.

From traditional Portuguese pastries costing less than a dollar to satisfying $16 lunch menus including a starter or dessert and a main dish, exploring the hilly, colorful Porto and the wider, vineyard-dotted Douro Valley will hardly break the bank.

A shoulder-season vacation is the perfect way to get out of that wintery mindset and relieve yourself from the stresses of day-to-day life; however, there’s a catch.

Prices are skyrocketing and summer travel plans always take priority, which leaves those trying to get out of their hometown rut this spring on a pretty tight budget, especially when it comes to flying overseas.

Luckily for us, Europe, one of the world’s most coveted hotspots this time of year, is filled with stunning yet reasonably-priced destinations, granted, so long as you look beyond massively popular destinations like London or Paris.

In fact, Statista just came out with its own list of the cheapest European cities you can visit this spring based on their daily price index, and these were the 5 places that dominated the ranking:

5. Sarajevo

The Bosnia and Herzegovina capital is one of Eastern Europe’s most underrated destinations, and I’m sure that everyone who’s gotten to see just how much value you get for your money here will agree.

With average daily costs evaluated to be just under $50, Sarajevo is the ideal city for travelers who want to experience the region’s rich history and culture on a budget.

Here, you can stroll through the cobbled streets of the Old Bazaar (otherwise known as Baščaršija), go on a free sightseeing tour of the Latin Bridge and the Eternal Flame, and even take a few breaks in between to try some of the mouthwatering local dishes, like gulaš, burek, and ćevapi, oftentimes for less than what you’d pay here in the U.S. for a single cup of coffee.

4. Budapest

Famous for its stunning architecture, thermal baths, and impressive nightlife, the “Pearl of the Danube” adds yet another win to its long list of successes – being named one of the best budget-friendly destinations in all of Europe.

One thing I loved about visiting Budapest is the fact that even though you’ll be paying far less than what you would in bigger, better-known destinations, the sights you’ll get to experience here are akin to what you’d see in the likes of Prague or Vienna.

That’s why those dying to take a picture of that quintessential European city skyline will find Budapest to be everything they’d wished for and more.

Here are the most affordable cities for digital nomads right now:

1. Penang, Malaysia

Penang is one of the fastest-growing digital nomad destinations right now. This Malaysian city is safe, beautiful, and close to nature.

It’s a great city for culture and food, and it’s becoming incredibly popular with other digital nomads thanks to its affordable cost of living.

It also helps that Malaysia has one of the easiest digital nomad visas in Asia.

To qualify, applicants must demonstrate earnings of at least $2,000 per month in the “digital domain” (a broad category that applies to most digital nomads and remote workers) and pay a fee of $225.

The visa entitles you to live in Malaysia for up to 12 months.

2. Da Nang, Vietnam

Next up on this list of the cheapest cities for digital nomads is Da Nang, Vietnam. This is another city in Southeast Asia that boasts a low cost of living while offering a great quality of life.

This gorgeous coastal city is growing in popularity with travelers and digital nomads alike. It’s very safe, and it makes a great base for exploring more of Vietnam.

While there is no specific digital nomad visa for Vietnam, the country recently introduced a new 90-day tourist visa that makes it easier than ever to stay in the country for up to 3 months.

3. Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Phnom Penh is another great destination for digital nomads where you can live on less than $1,000 a month. Cambodia is one of the cheapest countries in Southeast Asia.

And in Phnom Penh, the capital city, you can enjoy affordable prices while still benefitting from all the conveniences and amenities you’d expect to find in a big city.

This has made Phnom Penh a growing hotspot for digital nomads in recent years.

While Cambodia does not have a digital nomad visa, many people stay long-term on an E-class visa, also known as an ordinary visa, which can be extended for up to 12 months.

Another option is a simple tourist visa, which is good for 30 days and can be extended for one additional month.

4. Cordoba, Argentina

Departing from Southeast Asia and heading to South America, we have Cordoba next on our list. Although the bustling capital of Buenos Aires is the most famous destination in Argentina, don’t overlook the country’s second-largest city, Cordoba.

Cordoba has just 1.5 million people (compared to the 13 million in Buenos Aires), so it’s a more relaxed city.

It’s also more affordable than the capital in a country that is already one of the cheapest in South America right now. And it makes a great base for exploring the rest of Argentina.

Americans can stay in Argentina for up to 90 days on a tourist visa. The country also offers a digital nomad visa that is good for up to 180 days.

5. Osijek, Croatia

Finally, the one city in Europe to make this list is Osijek, Croatia. Although Croatia has gotten more expensive in recent years, Osijek remains one of its most affordable cities for digital nomads.

This city, which is the fourth largest in Croatia, lies inland close to the border with Hungary and Serbia. It’s a charming, historic city with a laidback atmosphere, which is making it increasingly popular with digital nomads.

Croatia has a digital nomad visa which is one of the easier visas to obtain in Europe.

Applicants will need to demonstrate earnings of approximately $2,600 a month and once approved, the visa is good for up to 12 months.

And budget travelers will be pleased to find out that many countries in Central America are very affordable.

Based on data from BudgetYourTrip, we’ve found that it’s possible to travel in these destinations for just $50 to $60 a day including food, transportation, and accommodation.

These are the three cheapest countries in Central America to visit in 2024:

Guatemala

The most affordable destination in Central America is Guatemala. This gorgeous country is the most affordable in Central America and is perfect for a winter getaway.

Some highlights of Guatemala include the colorful colonial city of Antigua, the epic Acatenango volcano hike, the stunning Lake Atitlan, and the fascinating Mayan ruins of Tikal.

According to BudgetYourTrip, the average daily cost of travel in Guatemala is $48 per day, or $679 for a week-long vacation for two people.

Getting to Guatemala is cheap too — there are tons of affordable nonstop flights from major U.S. cities to Guatemala City. For example, flying from New York’s JFK to Guatemala City is under $200 on JetBlue this winter. You can find round-trip flights for under $300 from other cities too.

Nicaragua

Another one of the cheapest countries in Central America is Nicaragua. This is a country that combines culture and beaches really well. The historic cities of Leon and Granada are both well worth a visit, but the country also boasts plenty of natural beauty including Lake Apoyo and two coasts with great beaches.

On the Pacific side, beaches like San Juan del Sur are known for being surfing (and party!) hotspots. Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast is more remote, but it’s worth the effort to visit beautiful and untouched destinations like the Corn Islands.

All of this exploring in Nicaragua doesn’t have to break the bank, either. Based on estimated travel costs, you can expect to spend $54 per day or $754 for a week-long trip for two people.

Flights from the U.S. to Nicaragua are limited, so it usually works out cheaper to fly into Liberia, Costa Rica, which has lots of nonstop flights from the United States. Then, it’s less than two hours by tourist shuttle to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.

Honduras

Honduras often gets a bad rap for being the most dangerous country in Central America.

However, if you stick to the tourist trail in Honduras, you won’t have anything to worry about. In fact, this underrated destination has only been growing in popularity with American travelers recently.

It’s another one of the cheapest destinations in Central America, with an average cost of $57 per day or $799 for a week-long trip for two people.

Specifically, the Bay Islands of Honduras are extremely popular with tourists.

These islands on the Caribbean coast of Honduras offer stunning beaches and an abundance of great scuba diving and snorkeling spots. Roatan is the most popular of the Bay Islands, but Utila is the best choice for budget travelers — it’s more affordable and has some of the cheapest diving in the Caribbean!

In Utila, you can expect to pay $15 to $20 a night for a basic room and as little as $30 per dive.

Argentina’s recently elected government has just slashed the value of its currency by 50% compared to the U.S. dollar in a bid to tackle economic challenges in the country.

This means that your money will now go twice as far – one dollar used to be about 390 Argentinian pesos, now it is about 800.

It may seem a bit insensitive to cash in on another country’s financial woes, but one of the main benefits of this move from the Argentinian government’s perspective is that it should attract more tourists into the country and, subsequently more spending and investment.

Digital Nomads Are Welcome

Argentina is a very forward-thinking country when it comes to welcoming digital nomads to its shores – it was recently ranked South America’s best destination for such travelers.

You can stay in Argentina for 90 days without doing any additional paperwork, which may already be enough for some, however, you can extend that to 180 days with the easy-to-apply-for digital nomad visa.

The visa can then be renewed for a further 180 days if you meet the desired criteria.

Argentina has more than 300 different co-working spaces and the average cost of living for digital nomads comes up at about $500 per month.

Bustling Buenos Aires

Most travelers will arrive first in Buenos Aires when they get to Argentina, and there are plenty of reasons to hang around in this city.

Ticking off the iconic sights such as the Teatro Colon, Palacio Barolo, and Plaza de Mayo is one way to spend a day or two in this perfect blend of colonial history and modern Latin American soul.

Another is to explore the incredible gastronomy and nightlife that Buenos Aries offers – you can survive on a diet of empanadas and cocktails for longer than you might think!

The Perfection Of Patagonia

Once you have got the thrill of the city out of your system, you may want to head south to check out one of the jewels in Argentina’s crown, the region of Patagonia.

Following years of being sealed off for tourism as a result of the health crisis, Southeast Asia re-emerged this year as one of the trendiest and most sought-after destinations among Westerners.

From the nightlife hotspots of Phuket and Pattaya in Thailand to the up-and-coming coastal resort of Mui Ne in Vietnam, both Americans and Europeans have been flocking to the subcontinent for a tropical vacation that won’t break the bank.

Other than the traditional tourist hotspots, this lesser-known, equally incredible, and ridiculously cheap country has also been surging in popularity lately, and it could be set for a historical 2024 now that it has just been confirmed as the home to the 8th Wonder of the World:

This Is Why Cambodia Should Be On Your Bucket List For 2024

Often forgotten in the grander scheme of things, the Kingdom of Cambodia is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to the jam-packed beach zones of Indonesia and Thailand as they hit new peaks of overtourism.

Bordered by Thailand to the Northeast, the landlocked Laos to the North, Vietnam to the East, and straddling the Gulf of Thailand, which provides its only access to the sea, it is one of the most ancient, traditional states in Southeast Asia.

Cambodia has retained a distinct character since at least the 9th century, when the Khmer Empire was formed, though it would later come under French influence following colonization attempts in the 19th century.

Though Cambodians, as a group, share a unique set of traits that set them apart from their immediate neighbors, whether it’s their Indian-influenced, flavorful cuisine or predominantly Buddhist demographic, they’ve also absorbed Western culture to some extent.

Colonial Heritage And Ancient Ruins

The decades under European control resulted in the makeover of many settlements across the then-mostly rural Cambodia, including in the capital city, Phnom Penh, remodeled with French-style buildings, wide boulevards, and an abundance of green spaces.

Still, Phnom Penh remained very much the cultural heart of Cambodia, and that foreign powers couldn’t erase: founded as early as the year 1372, it has an impressive selection of ancient temples, imperial palaces, and historical ruins dating back to the Khmer Empire.

Siem Reap, a resort town in the Northwestern region, is yet another major point of interest for visiting Americans, as it concentrates some of the most impressive stone buildings of the Khmer Kingdom, including Angkor Wat, which features on the Cambodian flag.

In fact, Angkor Wat has just been awarded the unofficial title of Eighth Wonder of the world, beating the ruins of Pompeii in Italy to claim this position.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the rediscovery of this complex is one of the main reasons why tourists are returning en masse to Cambodia lately, as it is the largest religious monument in the world and a massive fortification built with purpose and precision.

It was assembled by 12th-century King Suryavarman II and dedicated to the Hindu deity Vishnu, with five perfectly-symmetrical lotus-shaped towers representing Mount Meru, the ‘Olympus’ of the Hindu and Buddhist gods.

Beautiful Unspoiled Coastal Areas

On the Cambodian coast, the main destinations to visit are Sihanoukville, a small, laid-back city sitting on a peninsula stretching out into the Gulf of Thailand, bounded by an elongated, thin-sand beach, and Koh Rong, an island just off the mainland.

Full of sandy coves and dense patches of jungle and surrounded by a colorful coral reef, this hidden gem of an island is one of the last truly unspoiled nature reserves in Southeast Asia and a new favorite in the adventurous backpacking community.

There is a party beach at Police Beach, a small zoo in the island’s south, and the landmark High Point Rope Park, which is full of suspension bridges.

Tourists can also walk on rope crossings and zip line across the verdant landscape below.

One Of The Cheapest Tropical Getaways In Asia

With all this to offer, the crowd-free beaches, ancient cities and gorgeous nature trails, you would think Cambodia would be teeming with tourists from all over the world, but it is in fact one of the least-visited countries in Southeast Asia.

While its neighbors routinely welcome tens of millions, Cambodia hosted an all-time high 6.6 million tourists in 2019, and this year, though it’s on a recovery path following the pandemic, it still barely reached the 3 millionth mark.

This means it remains largely protected from the downsides of gentrification and overtourism, and prices can be much lower and far more attractive than Thailand, Bali, or any other regional sunny spot – which are already incredibly cheap compared to Western standards.

The beachfront Scarlet Sails Villa, located on a quaint, picturesque beach in Koh Rong Island costs only $63 to book per night this December, while the luxurious Plantation Urban Resort & Spa, in the forested Daun Pehn district of the capital region, has overnight rates starting from $97.

If you’re on a stricter budget, you can go even cheaper, with the House Boutique Eco Hotel in central Phnom Penh costing $24 to book, and non-luxurious yet moderately comfortable rooms at Le Casablanca Hotel available for a mere $14 on Booking.com.

Whether you’re on a luxurious getaway or you’re simply hoping to find a decent place to sleep as you set out to explore during the day, prices in Cambodia will not heavily impact your wallet.

On average, travelers have spent $16 per day on meals when traveling the country, $45 per night on accommodation, and a negligible $7.41 on transportation.

In total, a one-week trip to Cambodia that’s not too frugal will cost $865, making it one of the cheapest tropical destinations not only in Southeast Asia but the entire world.
