If a trip to Europe is in the cards for you this year, then take a moment to pause before you press that ‘book’ button.

Do you really want to wrestle with the crowds in Barcelona? Fight for beach space in the Algarve? Or are you ready for a different, cooler kind of European experience?

Copenhagen could be the answer you seek.

The capital city of Denmark has always been a popular choice for travelers, but in 2024, we could see it become one of the trendiest destinations on this historic continent.

Here’s why:

King Of Cool

There’s no doubt that Copenhagen is one of the coolest cities in Europe, and I’m not just talking about the dress sense of its inhabitants or the range of sleek bars and fine restaurants.

Being in northern Europe, the city enjoys pleasant summers that don’t suffer with the baking hot summers of countries such as Greece or Spain.

The average temperatures for July and August are a comfortable 65F, meaning you can enjoy fun in the sun without cooking.

Heading to slightly cooler destinations in the summer is a trend that has been taking off in recent years, so expect places like Copenhagen to become even more popular.

Connection With The U.S. Has Never Been Better

Copenhagen Airport saw an impressive 27 million passengers pass through its doors in 2023, which pretty much puts it back on par with pre-pandemic tourism figures.

More interestingly, it seems that American travelers are taking a shine to the Danish capital, with more than one million passengers going between it and the United States last year.

You can fly non-stop to Copenhagen from no fewer than 8 locations in the U.S., including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Boston, Miami, New York (JFK), and Newark – with some flights in the shoulder season as little as $450 for a round trip.

Hidden Gems Are Plentiful

Away from the obvious sights and attractions of Copenhagen, there are some relatively easy-to-find hidden gems that can have you feeling like a local in no time.

Make use of Copenhagen’s excellent metro system and take a trip out to Amager Strandpark.

This small but beautiful beach is actually its own tiny island just off the shore, but you can reach it on foot from the Amager Strand metro station.

Here, you’ll find great walking and cycling paths, piers for getting out onto the water, and facilities such as cafes and toilets.

Another great coastal attraction to check out is CopenHill, a dry ski slope built onto the top of an energy plant.

It’s also great for hiking in summer.

If you’re looking for a trendy place to spend an evening, look no further than the Meatpacking District.

This former industrial area is a short walk from the central railway station.

Its former meat processing warehouses have been gentrified into a range of cool bars and stylish restaurants—my personal recommendation is Warpigs Brewpub.

Lots Happening In 2024

If you’ve had Copenhagen on your bucket list for the last few years but never managed to tick it off, then 2024 might just have the perfect excuse to do so.

From June 27-29, the city will host the annual World Coffee Championships at the Bella Center, where leading specialists from around the world will gather to celebrate all things roasty.

2024 will also be the first year that the new attraction, Home of Carlsberg, is open to the public.

This visitor experience will allow travelers to learn the story of the famous beer brewer that began life in the city all the way back in 1874.

Also new for this year are five new underground stations on Copenhagen’s metro, which are set to open, linking the downtown area with cool suburbs such as Sydhavnen.

Underrated Digital Nomad Destination

It certainly won’t be the first country that comes to mind, but Denmark is actually a very underrated place to live as a digital nomad.

Americans can stay for up to 90 days without anything more than a tourist visa, and English is very widely spoken, especially in Copenhagen.

It also scores very highly on safety, ranking as the second safest country on the 2023 Global Peace Network, while internet connection, infrastructure, and co-working spaces are all of a very high standard too.

The only real downside is that it’s not the cheapest place to stay – but if you feel like enjoying some nomad luxury, there are few better places in Europe to do it than Copenhagen.

If you’re looking to make your Pittsburgh trip extra budget-friendly, you’ll be happy to know that places like the Carnegie Museum offer heavily discounted tickets for students and seniors.

Admission is entirely free on the first consecutive Saturday and Sunday of every month, so try to time your visit accordingly.

One Of The Safest Cities In The Country

Not only does Pittsburgh offer excellent value for the money, but it’s also one of the safest cities you can visit in all of North America, which, let’s face it, is any destination’s biggest selling point.

OK, so I’m not really a fan of the “destination dupe” trend going around right now since every place has its unique charm and character, but Pittsburgh truly is kind of like a smaller, cheaper, safer San Francisco, so if that’s a city you’ve wanted to visit for a while now, considering Pittsburgh instead might work in your favor.

The Pennsylvanian hub boasts the same “hilly tech town” vibe and forward-thinking industries that make San Francisco so fascinating.

If that sounds like something you want to experience in the near future, your decision-making process just got a whole lot easier!

Everyone would like to think there were a lot of valuable lessons learned during the pandemic.

Amsterdam may have made it through, but it seems memory loss may be a side effect.

Surely, we all feel grateful those dark days are behind us, but is Amsterdam forgetting how travel came to a screeching halt with so many economies across the world severely affected overnight?

The Netherlands’ most popular city has long been attracting free spirits with fewer rules and more play, but those days may be over as the city is basically hanging up a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign.

Fortunately, Amsterdam has a doppelgänger less than an hour away. The beautiful city of Utrecht is well worth the trip.

Another Campaign To Deter Tourists

Man, oh man, here we go again…

Amsterdam has launched yet another campaign to keep tourists at bay. This time, it’s in the form of a questionnaire to get tourists to think twice about their reason for visiting.

With very specific questions, including references to drugs, this new tool is designed to push tourists to visit for the right reasons (in their eyes) and inform them of certain illegal activity despite the city’s notoriously lax culture.

While over-tourism is a very real concern, here is the kicker – Amsterdam built their own city, culture, and attractions, so how is this newfound Karen-esque perspective the fault of tourists when they’re just seeking a fun time in what is supposed to be a really cool city?

The answer may be a hard lesson for Amsterdam if tourism numbers drop, and this is exactly why nearby Utrecht should be on travelers’ radar.

A Spitting Image Of Amsterdam Without The Hassle

Split between a canal (the Oudegracht), just like Amsterdam, is another city that can easily take on the moniker of ‘next best thing’.

Of course, every city is unique in its own way, even if they’re essentially neighbors, but that’s not to say Utrecht won’t have you ‘ooh-ing’ and ‘ahh-ing’ just like you would in the more popular Dutch city.

Many streets will have you asking, “wait, am I in Amsterdam?”. It wouldn’t quite feel this way without a bicycle-friendly lifestyle and a plethora of cafes. To that, Utrecht says, “check” and “check”.

Easy To Reach

In under an hour, travelers can drive, Uber, bus, or take a cheap train to Utrecht from Amsterdam, which is the easiest gateway into this lesser-known gem.

The only other notable city outside the Netherlands to use as a gateway would be Dusseldorf or Brussels, where a train takes approximately 2 hours.

Given that Utrecht is essentially a smack dab in the country, these are the best options.

One Of The Oldest Cities In The Netherlands

Utrecht’s history runs deep and was hugely significant before Amsterdam became what it has grown into today: a thriving cultural hub and top tourist destination.

But tourists can still see stunning sites of this ancient city’s historic past with the unmissable Dom Tower, an array of incredible castles, and overall medieval atmosphere.

It goes without saying, one of the best ways to learn about history is by visiting local museums, which Utrecht has many, as well as walking tours through lovely historic neighborhoods.

More Laid Back

Travelers can visit Utrecht for a more casual time along a scenic canal as if Amsterdam didn’t have the wild scenes they’re known for.

Amsterdam is fully aware of its self-induced party image, but Utrecht is on the other side of the spectrum.

Its beauty strongly resembles that of the more popular Dutch city.

People tend to be more keen on welcoming outsiders as it’s not a hugely popular tourist hub where over-tourism or partygoers are major concerns.

More Affordable

Amsterdam is a lot of things, but it’s not exactly known for its affordability. Utrecht, on the other hand, is much more budget-friendly.

While it’s certainly not the cheapest in Europe, if you’re seeking Amsterdam vibes without breaking the bank, Utrecht is the place.

Sip coffee canal-side, rent a bike, or pay a cheap entry fee to climb the 14th-century Dom Tower as the cost of living and attractions are more affordable than in Amsterdam.

One Of The Happiest Cities In The World

Utrecht may be in caught in Amsterdam’s shadow, but that doesn’t mean it has to be gloomy. In fact, Utrecht is the fastest growing and happiest city in the country, according to the United Nations.

As Amsterdam sounds like a place to skip for now, Utrecht is slowly but surely making a name for themselves.

So, when choosing between Amsterdam or Utrecht, would you rather be told “don’t do this”, “don’t do that” and get pressed with, “what are your intentions?” like a Dad on Prom Night, or would you rather visit somewhere new and exciting filled with people truly happy to have you?

As in most countries restaurants are considerably more expensive in the main tourist areas, so we recommend you seek out restaurants catering to locals.

Restaurants packed with locals almost always offer the best value and the best dishes too.

Shop In The Markets

If you’re shopping for luxury goods, there are better places to visit in Europe. But if you’re looking for gems and quirky pieces, the markets of Athens are well worth exploring.

You can chat with stallholders, look at unusual items, and get a real taste of Athenian culture. Many of these markets are popular with locals as well as tourists.

The markets in Athens are a great place to buy souvenirs while learning about the products and their origin and meaning, often from those who made or produced them.

Excellent Nightlife

If you want to party the night away, then Athens is a great place to be. The nightlife here is legendary and for good reason.

Just don’t expect an early night as most bars don’t get the party started until around 10pm when the daily temperatures have cooled, so you’ll be partying until the early hours.

Some of the best nightlife spots in the city include Kavouras bar for live Greek music and the 360 Cocktail Bar above Monastiraki Square, where the drinks are as good as the incredible views of the city.

Beautiful Beaches

Because Athens has a reputation for being a grimy, urban city, people often don’t realize just how close the city is to the coast. Less than 14 km south of the city center, you will find a beautiful stretch of golden sand beaches with blue-flag-certified clean waters.

The cove of Skalakia Agias Marinas is one of the most beautiful and famous of these.

The beaches of Athens are great place to enjoy water sports such as windsurfing and paddle boarding.

A Gateway To The Greek Islands

Athens is incredible but it is also a noisy, busy city with very little green space.

For this reason many travelers choose to use Athens as a stopover on route to a more relaxing vacation on one of the many Greek islands.

If you land in Athens, you could fly straight back to your preferred island. But most people choose to spend a few days exploring the city and then travel to the Greek islands by ferry. This tends to be not only cheaper but also a more picturesque way to travel.

Piraeus is Athens’s central port, but many ferries also depart from the ports of Rafina and Lavrion.

5 Reasons Why This Trending U.S. City Is Perfect For Solo Travelers

Washington, D.C. might not be the first place you think of when it comes to amazing travel destinations in the U.S., but you shouldn’t overlook the nation’s capital for a great solo trip.

D.C. has been exploding in popularity as a tourist destination lately, with a record number of visitor arrivals in 2023.

There are tons of amazing things to do in the city, and it’s a surprisingly excellent destination for solo travelers too.

I’ve spent a lot of time exploring D.C. on my own, and these are the top reasons I think it’s the perfect place to go as a solo traveler:

Lots Of Solo-Friendly Activities

One of the biggest reasons you should visit D.C. as a solo traveler is because of the abundance of solo-friendly activities and unique things to do around the city.

There are tons of museums and monuments around every corner, and as a solo traveler, you can pick and choose what you’re interested in. With over 70 museums around the city, you can spend several days checking out impressive collections.

Along the National Mall, you’ll find some of the best museums, including the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Air and Space Museum.

Checking out the city’s many monuments and memorials, including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the World War II Memorial, is another must while in D.C.

You can even take a free tour of the White House, which was the coolest thing I did in D.C. — it just requires arranging it in advance (you can make a request 21 days to 3 months in advance, and it’s best to have some flexibility in the preferred dates and times of your visit.)

Easy To Get Around

Another reason I’d recommend D.C. for a solo trip is because it’s really easy to get around on your own. You don’t need a car, because it’s a very walkable city that also has good public transportation.

All of the museums and monuments mentioned above are walkable from each other.

If you want to give your feet a rest, you can also take D.C.’s Metro, which is well-connected and a quick way to get around the city.

It’s Very Safe

If you’re traveling on your own, especially as a solo female traveler, safety is probably a factor you take into consideration when choosing where to go.

D.C. is an extremely safe city, so you don’t have anything to worry about traveling here solo.

Obviously, you should always take safety precautions when traveling solo, but in general, D.C. is a very safe and secure place to visit.

Lots Of Different Neighborhoods

Washington, D.C. has a lot more to offer than just government buildings, museums, and monuments. Many of the top tourist attractions in D.C. are located in Downtown, which is why I’d recommend staying there as a first-time visitor.

Another great neighborhood to stay in is Georgetown. This historic neighborhood is a little further away from Downtown, but it’s incredibly picturesque and walkable.

While in D.C., you should also make sure to visit Chinatown and Dupont Circle, two other cool and lively neighborhoods.

Easy To Get To From Other Cities

Finally, D.C. is perfect for a solo trip because it’s easy to get to from other places in the U.S. More than 60 cities across the U.S. have regular nonstop flights to D.C.

There’s also a direct Metro line from the Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Downtown for just $6.

And if you’re already on the East Coast, you can take Amtrak to D.C. easily. The high-speed Acela train connects Boston, New York, and Philadelphia with D.C., while other Amtrak train lines connect Southern cities along the East Coast to D.C.

Why This City In Mexico Plans To Make A Historical Tourism Comeback In 2024

Travelers seeking a sun-soaked vacation in Mexico tend to have a select few beach destinations to choose from.

Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos are the leading beach vacations, yet there are so many other beaches to check out.

Whether it’s tranquil towns like Loreto, underrated resort towns or digital nomad hubs like Puerto Escondido, Mexico is the place to be for an incredible beach trip.

For a variety of reasons, one Mexican beach city has lost its luster over the years but still remains a household name.

Vacationers may often choose the most popular beaches, but 2024 is the year to give this, dare we say iconic, beach destination another chance.

What Happened To Acapulco?

Let’s go back in time for a moment.

Before the 5-star ritzy resorts of Los Cabos and all the sleepy beach towns turned popular getaways, there was the magnificent resort town of Acapulco.

Globally renowned as the place to be, Acapulco became Mexico’s shining star for years.

The state of Guerrero’s most recognizable beach town to this day has spiraled in popularity.

Since the days of being mentioned in Frank Sinatra songs, when the rich and famous would set their sights on Acapulco as their destination of choice, crime has been a huge factor for the entire state.

Today, the U.S. State Department has Guerrero listed as ‘Do Not Travel’ with references to violent crime and unpredictable checkpoints by armed personnel.

The advisory goes as far as to say government employees are forbidden from visiting tourist areas, including Acapulco.

As crazy as it sounds, some may remember viral videos of violent attacks on jet skis at beach resorts in recent years, which certainly didn’t help Acapulco’s reputation.

The good news is that Acapulco is ready to turn the page and is dedicated to making the necessary changes to become a major player in tourism once again.

Acapulco Is Ready For A Resurgence

Acapulco may not want to call it a comeback since they’ve been here for years, but they’re certainly ready for a hard reset.

The beautiful beach city has declared 2024 to be the stepping stone into a historic resurgence for tourism.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day”, as they say, but Acapulco is a step ahead as the city isn’t starting from scratch.

Sure, progression takes time, and this will certainly not be an overnight transition to becoming a place tourists deem safe.

Only time will tell if the U.S. State Dept. lowers their advisory level for the region, but Acapulco is putting in effort to increase security measures for tourists.

Mexico thrives on tourism, and one key factor is ensuring tourists not only feel safe but making sure they make it back home unscathed.

Acapulco is investing heavily in security by bringing in more National Guard troops with construction of 12 new barracks underway.

The National Guard will have a heavy focus on touristy areas, along with overseeing public transportation.

Beach Resorts Are Back

Not only has crime become a deterrent for travelers with much safer destinations in other parts of Mexico, but also a disastrous hurricane destroying hotel grounds.

Hurricane Otis ravaged southern Guerrero in 2023, causing serious damage to many beach resorts.

Reports indicate Acapulco’s accommodations are nearly halfway back to were they were before with 7,000 rooms open for vacationers right now.

There were approximately 19,000 before the hurricane wreaked havoc, but Acapulco is focused on taking baby steps to make a major comeback.

One of the best parts of Acapulco is staying at beachfront hotels, wrapping around the famous Acapulco Bay, and stretching further down the scenic coastline.

With premium prices for some of the more popular Mexican vacation hotspots, one way to entice travelers to vacation here is the much lower resort prices.

It Is One Of The Most Culturally-Charged Cities In Europe

First and foremost, we must reiterate that Naples is simply the third-largest city in Italy and its largest coastal metropolis.

Needless to say, there is no shortage of fascinating landmarks scattered around its historic center—and beyond, even.

This is one of Europe’s oldest cities, with a recorded history dating back as early as the second millennium BC, and from the monumental fortresses to the underground maze of Roman catacombs to the ornate chapels, there’s a hidden gem to be discovered in every corner.

When exploring this UNESCO-listed city, make sure to add the historic Piazza del Plebiscito, flanked by the majestic Royal Palace and a colonnaded basilica, the 13th-century Castel Nuovo, and the medieval Naples Cathedral to your list of places to visit.

It’s Not Your Average Open-Air Museum

Naples has developed a reputation for being grittier than your average Italian city.

It certainly looks less ‘polished’ and glamorous than the touristy parts of Rome, Florence, or Venice, but this is exactly why it is unique and why it shouldn’t be so easily scrapped from your itinerary.

It feels distinctly Italian, or more specificially, Southern Italian: this is far from being another open-air museum for Ancient History-aficionados, and though there are plenty of cultural sites listed, it is still somewhere Neapolitans actually live, work, and socialize.

In sum, Naples is a sprawling metropolis with a big heart, but it won’t bow to a visitor’s every whim: locals are likely to not be proficient in English, Old Naples is not your typical postcard-ready, colorful Mediterranean port, and not everything revolves around tourism.

It’s Full Of Character

While it’s true certain neighborhoods in Naples look less clean and, to some, less beautiful than your typical Italian tourist hotspot, how spotless or aesthetically pleasing do you expect an ancient maze of winding alleys approaching a 3,000-year-anniversary to be?

Where tourists are likely to see ruined buildings and underdevelopment, however, travelers will find a city full of character instead, with streets so narrow clothes are hung out to dry between opposite houses, hidden bookshops-turned-bar in the evenings, and local pasticcerie.

In all honesty, yes, it is overwhelming at first, but it only takes a couple of days exploring a vibrant Quartieri Spagnoli or watching high-spirited Neapolitans go about their daily affairs, rarely, if ever, registering the presence of Amalfi-bound Americans to fall in love with the organized chaos.

A Gastronomy Mecca

Other than being considered Rome’s edgier southern sister, Naples is a gastronomy mecca of the first order, being the birthplace of pizza, caprese salad, buffalo mozzarella, and other world-famous foods you’re likely to have grown up loving, yet didn’t know originated here.

Whether you’re actively looking for MICHELIN-star restaurants, or you feel your happiest sightseeing while grabbing street snacks to go, Naples and its varied selection of fine-dining eateries, street markets, and family-owned, rustic trattorie will simply blow your expectations.

You can’t go wrong with a classic, and it’s no wonder Naples’ signature Neapolitan pizza, most commonly made with San Marzano tomatoes and mozzarella cheese, is officially the fourth-best dish in the world (there’s no way you’re leaving the aptly-nicknamed ‘City of the Sun’ without trying it).

Naples Has Perfect Weather

This leads us straight to point number five: Naples is perfect for sightseeing regardless of season, as it is located so far south the Italian peninsula the weather remains pleasant year-round, unlike Milan, Turin or Bologna, where freezing temperatures are common.

Naples’s current temperature is a pleasant 79°F, and it will only get warmer as we approach summer, before a scorching 100°F (or higher) is recorded; if we may offer a suggestion, March to May is the best period to be in Naples.

Days are long and sunny, with limited rainfall expected, there are no heatwaves, and you’ll find it is less busy as the vast majority of tourists heading to the south of Italy – more specifically, the neighboring Amalfi Coast – will be doing so from June onward.

The Gateway To Beautiful Campania

Of course, no visit to Naples would be complete without adding a day tour to one of the many points of interest around the wider region of Campania, and if you’re staying longer than three days, we would highly recommend you pay a short visit to either one of these spots:
- The Amalfi Coast: where your Italian dolce vita dreams will materialize, riding vespas down a beautiful, rugged stretch of coastline interspersed with charming hillside villages and eating lemon gelato as the sun sets over the Mediterranean.
- Capri: an island easily distinguished for its jagged peaks and pebbly beaches, which can be seen from the mainland in Sorrento, and an upscale leisure destination home to small-scale, chic hotels where you can escape the Amalfi crowds.
- Pompeii and Herculaneum: these formerly-bustling Mediterranean towns were buried under volcanic ash following a devastating eruption in the 1st century AD, and with their preserved villas and temples, offer a glimpse into life in an ancient Roman city in the 1st century AD.
Naples Is Safer Than The Media Portrays

It only takes a quick search on Google to pull up numerous articles describing Naples as unsafe and dangerous for tourists.

There may be some truth to those statements, but there are also a lot of overstated risks and fearmongering.

Crime is slightly higher than in other Italian, but Naples remains a fairly safe destination for a cosmopolitan hub of its size: on Numbeo’s World Crime Index, it ranks as the 95th most-dangerous city in the world, only 15 slots above Rome, at 110.

Additionally, Statistica reports there are 3,500 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants, including all crime, from the petty type to full-blown violence, which is unlikely to affect tourists and is mostly restricted to mafia wars in peripheral districts.

At the end of the day, urban issues are bound to be more noticeable in Naples, which has a population of 3 million, than in smaller towns. Like any other big city, Naples has do’s and don’ts tourists must adhere to protect themselves, and their primary concern remains being pickpocketed.

Beginning May 23, Delta Air Lines will launch nonstop flights from New York (JFK) to Naples for the first time, proving there is growing demand for South Italy vacations among American travelers.

There’s No Cheapest Time To Fly To Puerto Vallarta

You don’t have to consider yourself a budget-conscious traveler to appreciate a good deal – and that’s exactly what you’ll get if you schedule your Puerto Vallarta trip this spring.

According to Skyscanner, March is the cheapest time to fly from the U.S. to Puerto Vallarta, followed by May and April, in that order.

Return tickets booked during these months start at $225, which is roughly $100 less than what you’d pay during peak season (right around the winter holidays).

Hotels and short-term rentals in the city are pretty reasonably priced this time of year, too.

The average daily rate hovers around $140, but some stays can go for as low as $72.

While not dirt cheap, this is still pretty good, considering you’re planning a dreamy beach vacation in Mexico.

The Weather Is Impeccable

Low prices aren’t enough to convince even the stingiest travelers, especially when that means going during a time of dreadful weather.

Luckily, that couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to visiting Puerto Vallarta in spring.

In these upcoming months, the climate in the city will be impeccable – sunny, dry, and with temperatures that hover around the comfortable mid-70s to mid-80s.

Remember, though, that the gentle sea breeze that keeps you from overheating throughout the day can get a bit chilly at night, so bringing a shawl or light jacket along for those late-night seaside strolls is always a good idea.

Explore The Wonders Of Puerto Vallarta Crowd-Free

If you’re anything like me, even a visit to the most stunning destination on Earth will end up feeling stressful if you’re surrounded by hundreds of other people invading your personal space every step you take.

That’s why timing your Puerto Vallarta visit to coincide with the later spring months can end up being the best decision you can make for that quiet, crowd-free experience you’ve been seeking.

In this case, however, March is out of the question since it’s one of the most popular months of the year to visit the Mexican hub (along with December).

By this point, everyone knows just how popular and inherently fascinating Mexico is, and U.S. travelers, in particular, have lost no time making it their No. 1 international destination, and for good reason.

If there’s another place so close to home that offers the same jaw-dropping views, centuries-old remains, and tantalizing food, I’ve yet to see it.

However, unlike the rest of the country, which only seems to be moving in an upward trajectory, one iconic city has recently lost its crown as Mexico’s most popular destination, with many travelers overlooking its fascinating cultural sights in favor of trendier, beachier hubs.

With all that said, Mexico City, the country’s gorgeous capital, remains one of the best places you can visit – and I’m not only talking about North America but the entire world.

And if you, too, are eager to explore the city’s sunny streets this year, I’m here to tell you that the perfect window to finalize those plans will be ending pretty soon, so moving quickly is of the essence right now.

That’s because spring is hands-down the best time to visit the iconic Mexican hub, according to Kayak’s Best Time to Travel Tool.

If you’re anything like me and hate to waste too much of that precious budget on travel (which, let’s face it, is the least exciting part of the experience), you’ll be happy to hear that airfare from most major U.S. cities to Mexico’s capital have never been lower.

Most stays in Mexico City also boast lower rates during spring – according to Kayak, they average $86 a night but can go as low as $46.

And as we speak, you can take advantage of some pretty sweet hotel deals going on.

Hyatt Regency Mexico City is currently offering rooms for 20% less than its normal rate, St. Regis has discounted its prices by 37%, whereas those who want to go all out and stay at the Ritz-Carlton will be happy to learn that their $905-a-night rooms are currently being listed at just $489, marking a whopping 41% discount.

The Weather Is To Die For

You don’t need me telling you how balmy Mexico is, but unfortunately, there can be such a thing as too warm, and if you want to avoid the sweltering summer heat, booking your trip now could be the best decision you make.

Right now, temperatures in Mexico City are ranging between the high 60s and the low 80s (15-27°C), creating the perfect atmosphere for long sightseeing trips, memorable meals at outdoor restaurants, and cool nighttime walks.

As great as spring weather is, most travelers are still insistent on pushing their vacations off until summer, which is why these upcoming months are ideal for those who want to enjoy Mexico City’s many, many attractions without having to wait on abysmally long lines or make their way through suffocating crowds.

If you’re a culture-hungry American planning on taking an international trip soon, it’s highly likely that Mexico is at the top of your wishlist. Best known for its warm climate, welcoming locals, and rich heritage, it is still the number one destination for U.S. travelers in 2024.

While Cancun’s upscale resorts and well-frequented beaches continue to lead booking trends by a wide margin, other lesser-known destinations are stepping into the spotlight, either due to their growing importance as wellness hubs or immense historical value.

Falling under the latter category, San Miguel de Allende has been surging in popularity lately. A medium-size city home to just under 200,000 inhabitants, it is the top ‘off-path’ destination in Mexico this year, even though it does not have its own airport, and it is nowhere near the coast.

It has just been featured on American Express‘ list of Trending Destinations, and it’s accumulated tens of millions of views across social media, especially TikTok, over the previous year.

It has won the hearts of Americans, and here are 5 reasons why:

The Prettiest Small City In Mexico

San Miguel (as it is called in the short form) is not only one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico, but also one of its most culturally-charged.

Founded in the 16th-century, it holds UNESCO World Heritage status thanks to its preserved colonial core, and impressive number of historic buildings.

Americans are eager to take culture-based trips this year, with a majority of them never having visited ancient sites, nor marveled at towering cathedrals, and for the odd History buff, San Miguel and its cobbled alleyways and fascinating museums is a no-brainer.

La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel is pretty hard to miss: the darling of visiting photographers, towering above the main square, it has a striking pink-washed Gothic façade, an uncommon feature for churches on both sides of the Atlantic.

Other points of interest include Casa de Allende, the previous home of infamous revolutionary Ignacio Allende, who was involved in the Mexican War of Independence, San Francisco Church, built in a flamboyant Churrigueresque style, and a vibrant Artisans Market.

Plenty Of Unique Stays To Pick From

Imagine staying in the heart of town, where the rooftop pool offers a privileged view of bell towers and the maze of colorful streets, within short walking distance from the main square, but it’s still a lush-green oasis, where you’re able to relax, and the cacophony of the outside world can’t disturb you?

Or perhaps a hacienda dating back to the period of colonization, embedded in the tradition of New Spain, with its sun-drenched, Mediterranean-style gardens, lovely inner courtyards, and charming rooms that, despite having been renovated, still somehow ooze Old World charm?

San Miguel is full of charming, unique stays, and let’s face it, if you’re staying in the center of town, you have no option but to immerse in the culture, as you are likely to be housed in a former colonial mansion turned into hotel, in a neighborhood that is hundreds-of-years-old.

According to Tripadvisor, the top three coolest and most unique hotels in San Miguel are Casa de Sierra Nevada, a Belmond listing, El Santuario, a hacienda-style guesthouse, and the rustic, reasonably-priced Villa Mirasol Hotel.

Relax While Immersing Yourself In The Culture

Other than the eclectic architecture, richly-decorated Catholic shrines, and the verdant city parks dotted with ornate fountains, San Miguel is famous for its peaceful environment and quaint, laid-back nature, compared to other colonial cities in Mexico.

If you’re looking to relax while soaking up the culture, it is definitely where you should be headed: though it boasts a plethora of colonial landmarks, neighboring Guanajuato can feel a tad too chaotic, with its incessant traffic and bustling crowds.

Mexico City is ten times worse, and pretty as it may be, Guadalajara does not have San Miguel’s highly-reputed hospitality, nor the same concentration of wellness centers and spas, offering Americans top-notch treatments.

The two top-rated spas in town are Sense, A Rosewood Spa, where contemporary relaxation techniques are infused with native, indigenous ingredients, and Liva Aqua, equipped with eight massage rooms, a sauna, steam bath and relaxation areas.

It Is Incredibly Quaint And Safe

Safety is a primary concern for Americans traveling anywhere in Mexico, and the media is largely to blame for that, having painted a bleak picture and presented the Latin gem as crime-ridden and gang-dominated for decades now.

As it turns out, not all parts of Mexico are plagued by rampant crime, and certainly not picturesque San Miguel.

Walking the city center, there is no need to get jumpy or clutch your personal belongings tightly every time you accidentally rub shoulders with a passerby:

Petty crimes and violence rates are lower than in the state capital of Guanajuato, and most American tourists report zero problems when vacationing in the municipality.

It is remarkably tourist-friendly, with well-lit streets after sundown and a year-round tranquil atmosphere.

That being said, you should not make a spectable of yourself by attending touristy spots bedecked with expensive jewelry, nor wander off towards peripheral, poverty-stricken areas, as you logically wouldn’t do in any destination, including in the States. It is pretty safe, just don’t push your luck.

It Can Be Very Affordable

On top of being safe, San Miguel is quite affordable compared to most tourist cities in Mexico. You can stay in a centrally-located, non-luxurious hotel paying between $139 and $277 per night.

Food is on the cheaper end, too.

If splurging on fine dining isn’t on the cards this time, you can go order a plate of tamales with breaded milanesa beef, rice, and a salad on the side in a local restaurant for less than $15, or grab a tasty tostada or tacos from a street market for less than five bucks.

Though this depends entirely on the preferred level of comfort in hotels, the restaurants visited, and whether you’re the kind who brings expensive souvenirs back, a 3-day trip to San Miguel can cost only $180, excluding hotels.

As you can see, San Miguel is very low-risk, it has attractive prices, the cultural value is immeasurable, and there are endless cute Instagrammable corners to be discovered. It doesn’t have an airport, but it’s only one-and-a-half hours away from both BJX and QRO.

How To Get To San Miguel From The U.S.

BJX is the main international airport serving the state of Guanajuato, with nonstop flights from a number of U.S. cities including Atlanta, starting March of this year, Chicago (Midway), Fresno, Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento and San Jose (California).

QRO is located near Querétaro, the capital of the state of the same name – San Miguel sits near the border – and it hosts flights from Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston (Intercontinental), and San Antonio in Texas.

Arriving to either Guanajuato or Querétaro, there are bus connections available to those traveling onward to San Miguel de Allende. Soon enough, a scenic train visiting the colonial cities of the region could be launched.

Following the Maya and Isthmus Trains, which launched simultaneously in 2023, local business leaders and tourism officials are now pushing for a third scenic train connecting León, Guanajuato, Querétaro and San Miguel de Allende.

The project is still on the drawing board, and as of now, there is no set date for commencement.
