As the winter cold covers much of the U.S., why not plan a sunny escape south of the border?

While a majority of travelers have beaches in mind, you would be doing yourself a disservice to overlook some of Mexico’s most cultural cities.

Right now, Mexico has some of the best weather in easy-to-reach destinations packed with historical sites and experiences.

Consistently in the 70s and 80s through the winter months, there are three cities that stand out among the rest for a perfect weekend getaway.

Guadalajara

Somehow, one of Mexico’s cultural icons remains overlooked by Americans. Even with direct flight options from many major U.S. cities, Guadalajara never comes close to Mexico’s most popular getaways.

No, there is no beach anywhere near Jalisco’s capital, but you’ll forget all about that when you set your eyes on Lake Chapala just outside the city.

Guadalajara is not exactly a natural wonder itself, but you can jam-pack your weekend full of surprises ranging from charming small towns and endless agave fields to gorgeous lakes.

The city itself is exactly what you would expect of quintessential Mexico, with vibrant streets, immaculate cathedrals, and buzzing markets with nonstop action and street food.

Visiting at least one of the surrounding small towns, such as Tequila, is a must for obvious reasons.

Given the convenient flight options and ease of getting around, including Uber, you can undoubtedly build an itinerary for 48 to 72 hours.

Plus, isn’t it nice to be able to stay at high-end hotels while sticking to your budget? It is, after all, one of digital nomads’ favorite playgrounds for that very reason – Guadalajara is super affordable.

Guanajuato

Tucked away in a bowl between Leon and trendy San Miguel de Allende is perhaps the most timeless city in all of Mexico.

A weekend away in this real-life time machine with touchstones of Europe and Old Mexico is money well spent.

You can’t go wrong picking a place to stay in this picturesque city as the views are incredible from both the scenic outlooks and charming cobblestone streets below.

Not many places hold on to their magic, but Guanajuato is the exception to the rule. If you turn a blind eye to the Starbucks across from the famous Teatro Juarez, you’ll notice there are no name-brand hotels anywhere in sight.

Tourists have their choice between Airbnbs, exquisite boutique hotels, each with their own unique flair, and even a historic castle converted into one-of-a-kind stay.

Uber is an option, but exploring the city’s winding roads and tunnels is best explored on foot to take it all in.

When you need a break wandering the hills – and you will definitely need a break – the city’s wide variety of rooftop bars is the perfect stopping point to take a breather.

The streets can be crowded with narrow sidewalks, especially when the city comes to life at night on weekends with traditional Callejonedas performances.

Mexico City

With slightly cooler temps on average than Guadalajara and Guanajuato, Mexico City is still sunny this time of year nonetheless.

This gargantuan city is a year-round getaway and consistently one of the most popular to visit outside of Mexico’s beach getaways, even breaking tourism records.

Rather than hit the beach, why not spend sunny days exploring the vast concrete jungle of Mexico City and the nearby canals of Xochimilco?

Although one of the biggest cities in the world, Mexico City is still suited for shorter trips. Given the high volume of direct flights and ease of getting around by Uber, taxi, and the cheap metro, no time is wasted in the air or on the ground.

There is definitely no shortage of cultural sites and fun things to do for a weekend, whether it’s museums, ancient ruins, or a classic lucha libre match.

In fact, this cosmopolitan city is deemed safe for tourists, so you won’t feel the need to have a bedtime. Given the trendy bar scene, why would you?

It’s impossible to explore the largest city in North America in its entirety in a weekend, but don’t the best destinations always leave you wanting more?

Also in Atlanta, the fascinating National Center for Civil and Human Rights museum will begin a major expansion to celebrate a decade since its opening.

There will also be some major new family-friendly attractions including the renovated and rebranded Margaritaville Fins Up Water Park in Buford, and the opening of the Georgia Safari Conservation Park in April.

The safari park will feature luxury accommodation including suites that overlook some of the exotic animals that live there.

Hotel Choice Keeps Growing

Georgia is a varied state and due to growing interest from all different kinds of travelers, a lot of money has been spent on creating new hotels and redeveloping existing ones.

In Atlanta, a new Signia by Hilton Atlanta hotel is set to open in January with no fewer than 967 guest rooms.

Also set to open in January is the boutique Trillith Guesthouse in Fayetteville, home to the famous tv and movie studio Trillith Studios.

February will see the opening of Cloudland at McLemore Resort Lookout Mountain, which will offer a wellness spa, mountaintop golf course, and unbeatable views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and McLemore Cove.

And for those who love being near the coast in Georgia, Hotel Bardo Savannah will open in the city’s historic Forsyth Park Mansion in February.

A Quieter Winter Destination

If you’ve read all this and you’re thinking that you simply cannot wait until spring or summer to visit Georgia, then you’re in luck because the state is an enjoyable winter destination that is very underrated.

Whether you want to hunker down in a cabin in a mountainous wilderness or enjoy the beautiful barrier islands along the coastline, winter is a great time to visit with lower prices and fewer crowds.

While not as warm as southern neighbor Florida, Georgia offers temperatures ranging from 50F to 60F during its winter, which is usually shorter and milder than most other states.

There are many tempting destinations when it comes to considering a European trip, not least of all in sunny Spain.

Cities like Barcelona, Seville, and Madrid are tempting enough before you even begin to consider beach destinations such as the Costa del Sol, the Balearic Islands, or even the Canary Islands – Spain really does have it all.

And the fact of the matter is that American travelers have simply been loving Spain over the past year.

The latest data from the Spanish Ministry of Tourism shows that more than 3.5 million Americans have visited Spain in 2023, which is over 17% higher than in the last pre-pandemic year 2019.

And the forecast for 2024 shows that this figure could continue to grow – so just why is one of Europe’s cultural gems so popular with American travelers right now?

Universal Appeal

As mentioned above, Spain has a little bit of something for everyone.

Iconic attractions such as the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona or Plaza Mayor in Madrid will always draw in the crowds who love to experience the archetypal European city break.

Then there’s the region of Andalusia in the south of Spain with intriguing cities that show the country’s Moorish history such as Seville, Cordoba, and Malaga.

From Malaga, head east along the coast to find some of Spain’s best resorts, which are perfect for families and couples.

There are even many idyllic island destinations to choose from, such as the Balearic Islands, which recently smashed their tourism record, and the volcanic Canary Islands, which lie off the coast of northwest Africa.

For those who prefer to wander from the beaten path, Spain has some lesser-known destinations such as Galicia that are ideal for discovering different, more rustic sides of the country.

Flights Are Plentiful And Affordable

The choice of flights from the U.S. to Spain has increased alongside the popularity of the country.

Americans can fly nonstop to a wide range of destinations in Spain including the likes of Mallorca.

According to travel booking website Kayak, roundtrip flights from New York to Spain can cost as little as $400, and from Los Angeles, they can cost around $500.

However, the prices of flights vary massively depending on the time of year – be flexible with your dates and you’re bound to find a good deal.

Digital Nomads Are Welcome

The Spanish digital nomad visa has been very popular since it first launched back in May 2023 as part of the country’s StartUp Act.

To be eligible, you must prove you earn double the Spanish minimum wage (about $2,700 per month), must be from outside the European Economic Area, and must not have been a resident in Spain in the last five years.

You can stay for up to a year on the visa and can then apply for an extension after that – you can also bring a spouse or partner, but the amount you must earn goes up by around 25% if you do.

The visa even allows you to work for Spanish companies, provided the money from that makes up no more than 20% of your total income.

Cities such as Seville and Valencia have proven to be very popular hangouts for digital nomads thanks to their great weather, interesting culture, and great transport links.

Spanish Life Is Great

Immersing yourself in the culture of Spain for a few weeks is good for the soul.

Life here is a slower pace than in America, with time taken out to enjoy coffee with friends an essential part of life (as are afternoon siestas).

Evening plans tend to happen much later in Spain than in America too – if you’re heading out for dinner, realistically don’t even think about it until at least 8pm (and even that is a little early for Spain).

People in Spain also know how to throw a party, with a rich calendar of fiestas throughout the year that are often a great way to see some of the traditions in action such as Flamenco dancing and great music.

After three years of confusing travel rules, 2023 finally marked the comeback of tourism across the globe.

Throughout the year, we have seen a boom in bookings as travelers took to the skies in droves in search of that bucket list spot they could only dream about visiting a while back (but couldn’t).

As per usual, Google has been tracking this fast-growing trend, and in the top ten of their ‘Year in Search’ list, one country in particular was highlighted as the most sought-after destination in its own continent, as well as a cultural behemoth awaiting (re)discovery now that normality has resumed.

Egypt is the eighth most-searched country currently, and with record growth expected ahead of the annual round-up, it seems pretty safe to say it has been one of 2023’s rising stars.

The question is: why?

Why Is Egypt So Popular In Google Searches Right Now?

A country as ancient as civilization itself, Egypt has been on the radar of Americans for years, and you know already why that may be.

It is the land of Pharaos, boasting unique landscapes, a fascinating culture, and a plethora of world wonders.

We won’t bore you with yet another copy-and-paste article on the marvels of pyramid-dotted Egypt: there are plenty of those doing the rounds already.

Instead, we would like to divert your attention to why Egypt is trending right now, and posting record rates of growth in 2023 specifically, and what has changed compared to previous years.

In other words, why are more Americans taking the 11-hour-plus Transatlantic flight to Cairo when there is an exhaustive list of alternative destinations they could explore instead?

Egypt Was A Less Tense To Visit In 2023

First of all, if you’ve been to Egypt at all in the last two or three years, and you have returned yet again in 2023, you might have noticed the atmosphere is a lot less tense.

The pandemic has finally subsided, and the unfathomable sanitary controls that changed with little warning numerous times in the span of a single week no longer apply.

U.S. citizens – in fact, every other foreigner – can once again visit Egypt curb-free.

Other than the visa-on-arrival policy, a bureaucratic hurdle the Egyptian Government is yet to loosen, you are no longer required to satisfy health-related entry requirements, fill out complicated forms at the airport, or observe crazy rules while being a guest at a resort.

The return of normality is one reason why Egypt’s soaring in popularity in 2023, but that is not all.

After all, every single country has axed restrictions as well, some much sooner than Egypt.

Is Egyptomania Back?

This brings us to reason number two, and perhaps the most important one of all: the renewed interest in cultural expeditions among Americans.

2023 has been the year of the culturephile, and the resurgence of South American colonial cities, off-path Europe, and mystical Southeast Asia as trendy tourism hotspots only go to show there are truly no limits as to how far Westerners will go to have more meaningful experiences when traveling.

In terms of cultural expeditions, Egypt is really a no-brainer.

Its History dates back several millennia, and some of the oldest structures created by man can be found within its borders, including the Great Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza, but these alone can’t explain Egyptomania picking up steam this year specifically.

Instead, we must look at new developments that are fuelling more searches, and thus holiday bookings than the expected average, and the biggest one of them is the soon-to-be-launched Great Egyptian Museum, opening in early 2024.

20 years in the making, and to the tune of a billion dollars, this majestic center for the culture and sciences is finally bowing after much anticipation, presenting to the public for the first time a vast selection of artifacts that previously did not have a permanent home.

One of them is Tutankhamen’s sarcophagus, its associated 5,000 artifacts that were unearthed when the legendary Pharao’s tomb was discovered in the 1920s, a 3,200-year-old statue of Ramses the Great, and the relatively well-preserved sun-powered, 2,500-year-old Khufu ship.

Aside from the cultural stuff, a string of new hotel openings and experiences has improved Egypt’s tourist offer this year, from a luxurious Four Seasons palace in Sharm El Sheik, the country’s leading resort city, to the announcement of a new 282-key state-of-the-art Hilton in Marsa Alam.

Elsewhere along the Nile, cruise liner Viking has debuted one of its most remarkable products yet, the five-star Viking Aton river cruise, taking guests on a 12-day ‘Pharaos & Pyramids’ adventure, starting with a three-night stay in Cairo before proceeding to an eight-day journey down the Nile.

Points of interest include the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens, as well as its counterpart Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings, visits to the Temples of Khnum, Dendera, Abu Simbel, and High Dam, and traditional Nubian villages.

All in all, it’s an exciting period to visit Egypt, as the country is waking up from its pandemic slumber, and it has a number of tricks up its sleeve.

Did we mention already it even has its own Bali? Yep. Get those flight tickets right away.

Egypt Is Affordable By Western Standards

Finally, a huge part of why Egypt is racking up large arrival numbers is its high affordability.

For an all-expenses-paid vacation on the Red Sea coast, you will likely have to fork out at least a couple thousand dollars for a one-week stint at a resort, but for those on a budget and who are not necessarily looking to splurge on a vacation, they can definitely get by on a ‘mid’ $361 for the week.

The figure is based on data gathered by Budget Your Trip, and includes acommodation, transport, food, and tourist attractions.

According to the platform, in the past travelers have spent on average $26 per day, or the equivalent in the local currency, when opting for a mid-range style of travel, or a very reasonable $68 when indulging in some luxury.

The average cost of an overnight at a budget hotel is $23, though it can be a lot more expensive depending on a traveler’s preferences and whether they are the Four Seasons or family-owned, affordable neighborhood hotel type.

The point is that consumer prices in Egypt are typically lower for tourists due to the devalued currency, and that is why it won’t weigh heavily on anyone’s pockets, even if they are actively looking to spend more on comfort.

Egypt has made its mark in 2023 as one of the trendiest destinations of the post-pandemic scene, and based on Google searches alone, it could be set for a historical 2024.

It doesn’t have a world-famous resort strip home to all the popular brands in hospitality, like Cancun.

Its wellness scene is nowhere near as developed, if it is existing at all, as Los Cabos.

It does not even have a beach, like fellow Jalisco city Puerto Vallarta.

Yet, for some reason, Guadalajara is smashing tourism records in 2023, with international arrival figures up 18.3% against the already record-breaking 2022, which remains, to this date, Mexico’s best-performing year: so far this year, as many as 4.2 million foreign visitors have landed there.

This may have left some wondering what it is about this inland metropolis that is captivating a growing number of tourists.

Here are 5 reasons why:

Incredibly Historical

Though it is a poorly-disseminated fact among Americans, Guadalajara is, in fact, one of the cultural capitals of Mexico, with a historical relevance comparable to that of Mexico City, having been founded as early as 1532 and having played a key role in the Mexican War of Independence.

It’s here where the country’s first revolutionary government convened, and throughout its History, Guadalajara has hosted migrants not only from Spain, but all over Europe and further afield, drawn to its 18th-century development boom, and they have left a profound mark on the city.

This is evidenced in a diverse demographic, mixed-origin cuisine, and inestimable cultural wealth, offering culture seekers plenty to sample and marvel at, especially if lounging by a pool all week is not their idea of fun.

Beautiful Architecture

With its accumulated centuries of History, it goes without saying Guadalajara has a plethora of landmarks, some of which rank among the most iconic in Mexico: think Guadalajara Cathedral, an imposing 16th-century Catholic effort, or Hospicio Cabañas.

Guadalajara’s number one point of interest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cabañas once housed one of the largest orphanages and hospitals in the Americas; still, it is only the tip of a monumental iceberg, as it only takes a short stroll around the historic center to be awe-struck.

From the Expiatorio Church to the Neoclassical Teatro Degollado to San Juan de Dios Market, the largest indoor market South of the United States, and all the winding streets lined by brightly-painted colonial houses that connect them, Guadalajara truly has an endless supply of manmade wonders.

Affordable Prices

Over the years, Mexico went from being an affordable tropical destination to one of the most luxurious, and if you’re headed to the Mexican Caribbean or even coastal Jalisco, you should definitely plan on spending a few thousand dollars during your stay, be it on costly dining or expensive resorts.

In Guadalajara, on the other hand, as it does not sit on the overdeveloped coast, consumer prices are within a ‘normal’ range: it is by no means the cheapest destination in Latin America, but tourists can get by on $46 per day for meals, or $791 for the whole week, all included.

The cost of living for locals is even lower, and if you’re visiting for a longer period (e.g. you’re a digital nomad) you should expect to live comfortably off of $1,918 per month; naturally, prices are higher for short-term visitors as they normally spend more on experiences, cultural attractions, and hotels.

Great Connectivity

One of the reasons why Guadalajara is seeing this uptick in foreign arrivals, particularly from the United States, is the great connectivity between U.S. hubs and the Jalisco capital: it is among the best-connected international airports in inland Mexico.

You can fly to Guadalajara from at least 20 departure points across America, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, and more keep getting added: next year, Detroit will receive its inaugural Guadalajara-bound Aeroméxico Connect flights.

Guadalajara also hosts nonstop service from Vancouver, in Canada and a Transatlantic link to Madrid, in Spain, making it one of a handful of non-coastal resort destinations in Mexico that are open to foreign markets outside the United States.

One Of The Top Destinations In Jalisco

Finally, it was recently crowned one of top destinations for tourists, both domestic and international, in the state of Jalisco, alongside Puerto Vallarta, proving they are not exactly intra-state competitors, but actually complement each other.

While Vallarta, and its neighboring Riviera Nayarit, in the bordering state, caters mostly to beachgoers and high-end travelers seeking relaxation and some fun in the sun, Guadalajara’s tourism sector is mainly geared towards culture and immersive experiences.

That’s not to say museums and historical buildings are the city’s only attractions:

Tourists will often visit it for the family-run restaurants and delectable cuisine, as it is the birthplace of the ‘drowned’ sandwich and tejuino, an indigenous corn beverage, shopping, and the exciting nightlife of Chapultepec Avenue.

The luxurious adults-only Hideaway at Royalton Blue Waters is set to open this November in Montego Bay, the perfect timing for a winter trip.
