Two of the most popular places for Americans to book a vacation are Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

Punta Cana’s vacation rental scene is booming! Whether it’s a local service or a major platform like Airbnb, it should be relatively easy to find comfortable accommodations.
Recent reports show there are hundreds, if not thousands, of Airbnb’s available. Many of these homes provide the necessary amenities digital nomads will be seeking, such as reliable wifi and a work desk.
Although Punta Cana’s co-working scene is plentiful, if you pick the right place to stay, then you may not need to leave at all.

Punta Cana is the perfect place for a “workcation”. Travelers in general come here to be pampered at high-end resorts and enjoy the pristine beaches.

The Perfect Florida Keys Itinerary
There are so many incredible places to stay when visiting the Keys it can be difficult to pick one. The easy solution to this is, of course, to pick them all! There is something in The Keys for everyone, and every Key is worth checking out.
It’s also incredibly easy to see everything The Florida Keys has to offer without breaking the bank.
For the ultimate Keys trip, we highly suggest flying into Miami, renting a car, and road-tripping through The Keys. Best of all, there’s no need to make the trek back to Miami when the vacation sadly comes to an end. Simply drop your rental car off at Key West International Airport and fly home from there!
Key Largo & Islamorada
The first stop on your adventure will be Key Largo, one of the best places to call home for a few nights on a journey through the Keys.
For a perfect spot to call home base, you can’t go wrong by checking into the Reefhouse Resort & Marina.
The resort is central to Key Largo’s top attractions, like John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and it has plenty to do on the property, with an amazing pool, a private beach, and delicious food. Plus, you’re only a few minutes away from Islamorada, meaning you can experience 2 Keys in one during a stay at the Reefhouse Resort.
One of the top things to do in Key Largo (and the rest of the Keys for that matter) is to go diving or snorkeling. Don’t worry if you forgot your mask; the Reefhouse Resort & Marina has a dive shop right on site!
Get Underwater
Speaking of diving, don’t let yourself pass on the opportunity to get underwater while in Key Largo. This area is home to some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling spots in the U.S. and is not to be missed!
If you have never tried scuba diving and want to learn, there is no place better. If you are already certified, you will love getting to explore the unique underwater landscape the Keys provides.
The average depth when diving in the keys doesn’t typically go beyond 30 feet or so, meaning you’ll be able to spend plenty of time on the bottom saying hello to sting rays and turtles.
If you’re wondering where to try diving, give Horizon Divers a call and tell them what you are looking for. You can easily get yourself on a morning 2-tank dive to explore the shallow reefs and shipwrecks in the Upper Keys National Sanctuary, and you’re guaranteed to have a good time.
You will not go hungry in the Keys. There are so many incredible places to grab a bite to eat that we could write a novel listing them all out. However, there are a few that you definitely shouldn’t miss! Key Largo has one of the best places to grab a bite, the famous Fish House.
The Fish House has locally sourced seafood that is to die for, all served in a quirky “keys-style” restaurant. Just give them a visit and you’ll see what we mean. This is the perfect spot to grab lunch after a morning dive and it should definitely be on your list of must-dos.
Plus, there are plenty of opportunities to grab some photos with friends and family.
If you are staying at the Reefhouse or somewhere nearby, be sure to schedule an afternoon/evening to visit Islamorada. This is the Key directly below Key Largo and is close enough that you can check it out without having to swap hotels.
There are 2 things you definitely need to add to your list of must-dos in Islamorada, and both are delicious.
Firstly, no visit to the Keys is complete without spending some time at The Florida Keys Brewing Company. As you can imagine, space is a prized commodity in the Keys, which is part of what makes this brewery so special.
The Florida Keys Brewing Company brews all of their beer right on-site and is one of the only local breweries that can truly say their beer is made right in the Keys.
Aside from how incredible the beer is, the property itself is eclectic and inviting. Everyone you meet will be friendly and nice, and you’ll be surrounded by incredible artwork, amazing beer, and a welcoming vibe.
After a beer or two, you’ll feel like a regular and probably start contemplating a move to the Keys 😅.
After a tour of the brewery, head right across the street for an amazing sunset dinner at Morada Bay Beach Café. This was one of our favorite dinners in the Keys. Not only was the food incredible, it was beautiful. Even your water comes out dressed to the nines!

And not only was the food delicious and beautiful, the scenery was gorgeous as well. We found ourselves pulling out the camera to try to capture the sunset as it would paint a different picture of the evening for you every few minutes.
If you want to feel like you are eating dinner in a beautiful painting, this is the place to do it.
Heading South
The upper Keys are beautiful, and we already can’t wait to go back, but you are missing out on some of the most iconic sights in the Keys if you end your adventure there.
After spending some time checking out Key Largo and Islamorada, be sure to pencil in a few days to head down the most beautiful stretch of highway in the U.S. to Key West.
Overseas Highway in The Florida Keys
And there’s no need to rush; there are great places to stop off for a bite to eat or take in the scenery along the way.
We left right at around lunchtime, so we made a stop in Islamorada for a delicious meal at the Oceanside Safari Restaurant and Lounge — be sure to try their special Mojito with fresh mint!
It’s the perfect way to cap off your lunch and will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.

On your way down to Key West, you may find yourself staring out of the window at the ocean around you.
There is no other highway in the U.S. that gives quite the same feeling as the Overseas highway, and you’ll be glad you decided to drive through the Keys.
Be sure to stop off at the end of a bridge or two to take it all in and grab some photos.
Before you make it all the way to Key West, consider stopping at Bahia Honda State Park for a beach break. There are award-winning beaches and gorgeous stretches of sand to set up camp for a few hours. If you have snorkeling gear, definitely be sure to explore what’s in the water as well!
Pick The Perfect Hotel For You
After catching some sun and sand, you’ll be ready to head into Key West to your hotel (of which there are plenty!).
Depending on what you are looking for during your stay in Key West, there are tons of hotel options to suit your needs. Much of Key West’s action is centered around Duval Street, so if you are coming for the nightlife that may be where you want to look.
However, we wanted to be close enough to the action to enjoy all Key West has to offer without being right in the thick of it. We wanted to enjoy Key West but stay somewhere that felt like its own secluded area away from the rest of the island.
The Capitana Key West was the perfect place to call home that achieved exactly what we were looking for.
From the second you check in you can feel the calm and relaxing energy of The Capitana.
If you are staying in the main hotel building, you’ll have incredible views of the pool and beach from your room, but for a more intimate experience, we opted for the Two Bedroom Cottage.
Many people who come to Key West dream of packing up and moving there after visiting. Staying in a cottage allows you to feel like you already do!

The property is a great escape that you could spend your whole trip enjoying if you wanted to, and it is great for every type of traveler and party size.
Spend the afternoon sipping cocktails by the pool or get active and try your hand at some badminton. Either way, you’ll love your stay at The Capitana.
Key West Is Endless Fun
You’ll have trouble deciding what to do with yourself because there are endless opportunities to have an amazing time in Key West, but let us help you out by sharing some can’t-miss experiences:
Sunset Sail
There are plenty of companies offering sunset sails, and if you walk to the Marina, you’ll see signs for all of them. We decided to head out with Sebago Key West and would absolutely do it again!
You’ll head out to the beat of a live musician while the (included) drinks start to flow, and the breeze from the ocean will cool you down before taking in a gorgeous sunset from a unique perspective.
Keep an eye out for dolphins and turtles. If you are patient, you’ll likely spot a few.
Speaking of dolphins, if you’ve never seen them up close and personal, then you should definitely go out on a dolphin watch. We went with Honest Eco, and cannot recommend them enough.
They explained so much about Key West’s dolphin population and you could tell they cared a great deal about the dolphins and making sure the experience was a great one for both humans and dolphins.
We were lucky enough to have some dolphins come right up to our boat to say hello, and it was a bucket list item of mine. I’m a bit of a sucker for animals, and this experience was surreal. I’ve always loved dolphins and been amazed at their intelligence; I’m not ashamed to say I teared up having them so close — there’s no experience quite like it.
If you are on the fence about a dolphin watch, go ahead and book it, especially if heading out with Honest Eco.
The Hemingway House is a classic tourist attraction in Key West, but there’s a good reason for it. The house itself is gorgeous, and the history behind it is fascinating.
Most people know it as Ernest Hemingway’s former home, but before Hemingway owned it, it once belonged to Asa Tift, one of the richest people to ever live in Key West and the most famous wrecker in the area.
Even if the history of the home isn’t your thing, it’s fun to see how many kitties you can spot around the property, all of whom are UNESCO world-heritage protected and allowed to roam the property at will.
Many of the best things to do in Key West are in or on the water, and a kayak tour is one of them.
You’ll see all sorts of wildlife from nurse sharks to starfish, and get to learn about the importance of the mangroves and their significance in the ocean ecosystem.
Kayaking through the mangroves makes you feel completely cut off from the world in the most beautiful way and is an experience you should try at least once. For a one of a kind experience, we went with Lazy Dog Charters.
I can’t stop going on food tours! Seriously, they are the best way to learn about a new destination and a great way to get the lay of the land at the beginning of your trip.
Not only do you learn about the area geographically, but you will also leave with a huge list of all the best places to eat and drink. Aside from the food, you’ll also learn about the culture and history of the area.
In Key West’s case, you’ll never be short on history, culture, or food to sample. Around every corner, there is another story waiting to be told and a new one ready to unfold. There is so much fascinating history in Key West, and it is certainly one of the most unique places in the U.S.

We said above that you wouldn’t go hungry in the Upper Keys, and the same holds true in Key West. There are a million food options that are all incredible, each with their own unique Key West flair. Certainly don’t restrict yourself to our list, but some of our favorites include:
Half Shell Raw Bar – If you love oysters, this is your spot! Right in the Marina, you can enjoy your meal knowing you are eating some of the freshest seafood money can buy.
Milagro – Chef Kevin has worked with Michelin Star chefs for most of his career and took that experience to create a restaurant with 5-star cuisine in a casual, bistro environment. The food is deliciously decadent in a more laid-back setting — in true Key West fashion.
Blue Heaven Key West – The most iconic brunch spot in Key West and a definite must. Not only is the food delicious, but you’ll feel like you stepped into another world the second you cross the threshold of the entrance.
No Keys Experience Is The Same
It’s an unfortunate fact of life that every vacation must eventually come to an end, but some destinations are worth endlessly repeating. The Florida Keys is definitely one of them.
There is a reason so many travelers come here time and time again, and every visit to The Keys will reveal something new and exciting.

The United Kingdom is the most popular international destination for American travelers in 2023, with a 145% increase in flight bookings from the United States to the United Kingdom compared to last year.
Though London takes the lead, other travelers will venture elsewhere in England or head north to spend some time in Scotland.
But far fewer travelers will venture to Wales, another country that is part of the United Kingdom. There’s so much more to the UK than just London, and Wales is one of those under-the-radar destinations.
Despite its proximity to London, Wales remains an underrated gem in the UK.
Here’s why this part of the United Kingdom should be on your travel wishlist this year:
1. It’s Less Crowded Than England
England is the most-visited destination in the United Kingdom, but Wales receives comparatively fewer tourists. The majority of tourists to Wales are day-trippers from England, so if you spend a few days to a week exploring the country, you aren’t likely to contend with extreme tourist crowds.
This makes for a much more pleasant experience. Rather than waiting in long queues and elbowing your way through crowds at popular tourist landmarks, you can enjoy solitude and tranquility in Wales.
Wales is full of underrated beaches, national parks, and cities that see far fewer crowds than neighboring England.
2. It’s More Affordable Than London
Wales is also more affordable than London (and the rest of England.) Although London is the most popular international destination for American travelers, it’s notoriously pricy.
According to the travel planning resource BudgetYourTrip, the average cost of a hotel room in London, England is £247 (approximately $317 USD) per night.
However, in Cardiff, Wales, the average cost of a hotel room is only £186 ($238 USD) per night, which is around 25% cheaper.
Overall, you can have a much more affordable vacation in Wales than you can in England. The cost of living is lower, and everything from food to activities to transportation is cheaper in Wales.
3. Wales Is Full Of Natural Beauty
One of the biggest reasons to visit Wales this year is because of its unspoiled natural beauty.
For hikers and outdoor adventurers, Wales has several national parks to explore. Snowdonia and Brecon Beacons National Parks are known for their mountains, while Pembrokeshire Coast National Park has wild and rugged beaches.
Wales is full of surprisingly beautiful beaches, dotted with colorful fishing villages and ancient castles.
Cities like Cardiff and Swansea are also worth a visit, but the real highlights of Wales lie in the country’s great wealth of natural beauty and scenic landscapes, as well as its quaint and picturesque small towns.
4. It’s Easily Accessible From London
Getting to Wales is not difficult. In fact, it’s a very quick journey from London, which is the main travel hub of the United Kingdom.
Although Wales has an international airport in Cardiff, there are very few direct flights from abroad and none from the United States.
Instead, you can get from London to Cardiff by train in just 1 hour and 50 minutes. While it’s possible to visit Cardiff on a day trip and possibly squeeze in a couple of other sights, it’s really better to treat Wales as a destination in its own right.
With limited time, two or three days would allow you to see some of the main highlights of this fairly small country. If you have a full week, you can thoroughly explore Wales’ mountains, coastline, and cities and towns.
Croatia is on the bucket list of many Americans country-hopping around Europe.
With its Mediterranean climate that provides the coastal provinces with great weather year-round, perfectly preserved historic cities, and a laid-back way of living, it competes with neighboring sunny spots Montenegro and Greece for the title of Southeast Europe’s top solo travel destinations.
Despite Greece’s ancient charm, and Montenegro’s trendiness, Croatia is still a favorite among the majority, and in this article, we will give you 7 reasons why:
It Is Perfectly Safe For Tourists
Eastern Europe has historically had a reputation for being ‘less safe’ than the more ‘developed’ West, but as the figures compiled by the U.S. State Department will tell you, we’ve now entered a new era where decades-old misconceptions no longer apply.
As part of the bloc, Croatia is one of the safest countries for solo travelers to explore, ranking as the least risky overall in a research conducted by experts at Bounce, who asked visitors whether they felt safe traveling Croatia, in a broader sense, and got a resounding yes for a response, ‘even at night and alone’.
Bounce‘s data corroborates that of the U.S. State Department’s Travel Advisory listings, where Croatia is added as a ‘Level 1 destination’. This means safety concerns are minimal, and it is about as safe as Norway, Finland, or even Iceland, considered the safest to visit in the world.
Beautiful Nature And Beaches
The Croatian coast, part of a wider historical region called Dalmatia, is one of the most beautiful bathing zones not only in Eastern Europe but the entire continent.
Situated on the Northern arm of the Mediterranean, mystically named ‘The Adriatic’, Dalmatia is a rugged, typically subtropical terrain boasting scenic coastal drives, interspersed with small, pebbly beaches and sandy crescents and a boundless natural wealth other Eastern powers find hard to rival.
If you’re a nature seeker, you should definitely pay the Plitvice Lakes Natural Park a visit. Famous for its cascading waterfalls, flowing effortlessly in the dry, hot summers and freezing over almost completely during harsh winters, it is a natural escape from the busy, overtouristed coast.
The Sljeme mountain, a short one-hour drive from downtown Zagreb, is also not to be missed, what with its numerous hiking trails, meandering creeks, and abundance of wildlife. It is particularly stunning in the colder months when snow blankets the foggy pine forest.
Diverse Tourist Offer
Croatia is – perhaps unsurprisingly – often portrayed in the media as a summer getaway.
Home to a collective of Adriatic islands lapped by the turquoise ocean and sharing a pan-Mediterranean culture with its Italian, Greek, and Spanish counterparts, Croatia – at least Dalmatian Croatia – feels indeed closer to Southern than Central or even Eastern Europe.
With that being said, reducing it to simply a beach zone is a gross mistake.
As you might have guessed already, this is a country where nature will always find ways to surprise you, whether it’s the lesser-explored alpine peaks that surround the inland capital of Zagreb, the picturesque Danube basin, or the vast, lush-green forests covering nearly a third of the national territory.
Croatia is diverse, and as a lover of nature, you will never run out of parks to explore, mountains to climb, or rivers to kayak in.
Croatia Is More Liberal Than Other Eastern European Countries
Eastern Europe has been synonymous with conservatism and backward policies when it comes to Human Rights.
From the outright prohibition of gay marriage in some countries to the endemic post-Soviet corruption observed in others, one might think Croatia and the likes of Hungary, Romania, or Moldova are all peas in the same pod.
This couldn’t be further from the truth: yes, Croatian society still has a way to go, especially regarding its acceptance of same-sex relationships, the culture is very much liberal and Western-inclined, but the role of religion in the state, albeit influential, is a lot more limited than in, say, Serbia.
The proof is in the countless LGBTQ bars and nightclubs that keep popping up in urban centers like Zagreb and Zadar, the naturist-friendly beaches, where you won’t be looked down upon when deciding to bare it all, and the locals’ carefree attitude towards life in general.
You may get the odd disapproving look from an elderly Croatian nonna holding hands with your same-sex partner in Split, but it is highly unlikely you will have abuse hurled at you.
Locals Are Friendlier To Tourists
The unfriendliness of Europeans towards Americans has become a running joke on social media channels.
Videos of tourists re-enacting the rudeness of the French or the impatience of Italian waiters as they take your orders have gone viral repeatedly in recent years, and judging by Western Europe’s staggering overtourism rates, it’s no wonder they’d want locals ‘out’.
Croatia, on the other hand, has so far been an exception, much like its close partner Bosnia and Herzegovina. For years, most notably during the nineties, tourists famously avoided vacationing in Croatia due to the bloody war resulting from the break-up of Yugoslavia.
After surviving a period when its beautiful beaches became empty, and the underground tunnels of the medieval fortress were used as bunkers by the populace to protect themselves against heavy shelling and artillery, Croatians have learned to appreciate the contribution of foreigners and the freedom they now enjoy following the traumatic Yugoslav years.
In fact, it is so friendly to foreign investment that it became Europe’s first country to launch a Digital Nomad Visa as early as 2021 when the continent’s borders were still sealed shut due to COVID, and it is now the ‘most liked’ digital nomad hub for 2023.
Tourists – and tourist dollars – are more than welcome, and as long as you show kindness and respect, and familiarize yourself with the culture, rest assured they will extend their Balkan friendliness to you.
Great Infrastructure
Croatia’s excellent infrastructure is one of the main reasons why it has become a massively popular destination for solo travelers.
You can be anywhere in the country – the Istrian Peninsula, close to Italy, or the remote Southern tip of Neretva, approaching the border with Montenegro – but you will have at least one bus in availability to get you where you need to be, as well as multiple ferry and rail connections.
Companies like Flixbus operate across the entire national territory, transporting customers from the Zagrebi metropolis to the ancient ports of Split and Dubrovnik all year round.
Trains are a bit trickier to navigate, as they run less frequently and are mostly restricted to Central and South-Central Croatia, but they are a great option for traveling at a slower pace, taking in the scenery in anticipation of the next stop.
Of course, if you’re short on time, you can always fly. Nearly all Croatian resort towns on the coast have a small domestic or international airport that serves them, linking them to other tiny aerodromes and major international hubs like Zagreb, Split, Zadar, and Dubrovnik.
A Set-Jetting Destination For TV Fans
Lastly, Croatia has risen to prominence in the past decade due to its association with the greatest television event of the 21st century, Game of Thrones.
The city of Dubrovnik, where a good portion of the external King’s Landing scenes were shot, is a natural film set featuring winding cobbled streets flanked by centuries-old stone houses, huge ramparts and fortifications, drawbridges, and hilltop forts.
If you’re a History buff or simply a Game of Thrones fan, you will find yourself stopping for pictures and re-enactments of some of the show’s most iconic moments at every turn.
Cities like Split and Sibenik are also popular among visitors keen on experiencing that Old World charm and slow Mediterranean living, though true, hardcore film fans might want to extend their time in Zadar instead, Hitchcock’s own favorite coastal spot.
According to the legendary filmmaker, ‘Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world,’ and having sat by the Sea Organ as the Adriatic caressed my feet, on a balmy late summer evening, with the seas reflecting the blood-orange sunset, I feel compelled to agree.
The Bulgarian coastline framing the west coast of the Black Sea is becoming more and more popular with tourists looking for an off-the-beaten-path European beach destination.
Many come because this area doesn’t see the crowds or high prices of other popular European beaches.
Although it sees millions of tourists from both within Bulgaria and abroad each summer, the Bulgarian coast is still relatively unknown to American tourists.
One section of nearly 80 miles of sandy beaches and resorts is referred to as the Bulgarian Riviera, and I was lucky enough to spend 2 months enjoying this area in the summer of 2022.
Here Are 7 Things That Surprised Me Most About My Time In The Bulgarian Riviera:
1. Bulgarian Hospitality
After being lucky enough to spend a long period of time traveling throughout most of the western Balkan states, I thought I was prepared for Bulgaria.
Despite my previous experience with that famous Balkan hospitality, I was still unprepared for the level of friendliness that I received from Bulgarians. It seemed that no matter what our interaction was or no matter their age or background, they were all very nice and welcoming.
I say this as an American who has traveled to many countries and has not always been greeted with the most welcoming of attitudes.
Overall Bulgarians treated me with nothing but kindness and warmth, especially so when you showed the slightest indication of willingness to partake in their traditional food and drinks!
2. The Beautiful Beaches
With the average summer season starting in late May and going until mid-October, the Bulgarian coast sees over 300 hours of sunshine in both July as well as August. The water is perfect for swimming with an average temperature of around 79 degrees Fahrenheit, with usually calm and mild waters near the shoreline.
Sunny Beach is considered one of the best beaches, but be aware it’s very commercialized and geared toward English tourists. That being said, the sand is soft and stretches forever, and their lifeguards watch the waters, so it does have its merits. Saxa Beach in Burgas and Town Beach In Sozopol are also good options if you don’t mind a crowd but want some good restaurants and other amenities.
For those times you are looking for a wild and natural environment, head to Boloata Beach in Kaliakra Cape, which is part of both a nature and archeological reserve. One of the few wild beaches left, Itakli Beach is a perfectly peaceful place to enjoy some alone time, so long as you don’t mind the occasional nudity; this is a natural beach, after all.
Most of Bulgaria’s tourists come from Romania, Turkey, Germany, Russia, Greece, and Ukraine, a fact that’s not too surprising given these countries’ proximity.
However, you will see many British people here on holiday as well, thanks to low-cost airlines’ regular and cheap flights connecting the UK to Varna and Burgas.
One thing that you probably won’t see many of is Americans. In fact, I never met another American in my two months here, and many of the Bulgarians were a bit surprised when they found out I came from the States.
When I returned back home after my time in Bulgaria, I spoke so highly of it that I am sure I must have convinced some other Americans to check it out for themselves.
4. The History
Bulgaria itself has a long and fascinating history, and the Black Sea region is no exception. Towns such as Sozopol and Nessebar boast beautiful old towns and historical architecture, and cobblestone streets to explore.
The towns along the coast here were important as trading ports, and some date back to the Bronze Age. One fun fact that I learned while I was out wandering the streets of Nessebar (my personal favorite town along the coast), is that this UNESCO World Heritage town is very important to the history of money, as it’s one of the first places in the world to start making coins.
Ironic as I learned this while I was out spending way too much money at the many stalls and handicraft shops tucked away in the alleys.
5. Let’s Eat
Let’s just say this right off the bat, the Bulgarian food scene on the Black Sea coast might be one of my favorites that I have ever experienced. It’s the perfect blend of grilled meats, vegetables, and cheeses, with soups and stews, salads, and fresh seafood adding perfectly to the mix.
Rakia is the country’s favorite drink here, and if you have tried it, you know that it can be hit or miss in some countries. I have to say that Bulgarian Rakia is quite good, even more so when mixed as a Rakia sour.
Some of my favorite food memories of this region are eating plates of fried smelt while sitting in the sand with a cold beer or having the traditional Shopska salad of juicy Bulgarian tomatoes and cucumbers topped with white cheese. (just remember to guard your food against the relentless seagulls!)
6. Cheap or Not Cheap, Up To You
I have to be honest, when I decided to spend my summer on the Bulgarian coast on the Black Sea, I had read about how cheap this destination was over and over again. Ok, it CAN be cheap, yes, and it’s for sure a fraction of the price that an Italian or Greek beach destination is, but it’s also easy to splurge here.
The town we were based in is known as being one of the more expensive areas, and those who are looking for cheap and cheerful head over to Sunny Beach, where you can get an English breakfast and a pint of beer for under $5.
Of course, how much you spend is totally up to you, and while I did enjoy the frequent cheap and delicious street snacks, I was often tempted by the amazing waterfront or poolside restaurants with their cocktail specials, cozy bean bags, and world-class freshly caught seafood.
7. Have A Seat
Being from America, the idea of paying for beach lounges is still a tad foreign to me. Now, I have gotten used to this concept after spending a summer on the beaches of Albania, Montenegro, and Croatia, but it hit a bit differently in Bulgaria.
As our base was in the tourist town of Sveti Vlas, the clientele is a bit more upscale (aside from us of course), and the beach is mostly taken up by huge fancy beach clubs, offering everything from simple loungers to luxurious beach tents with beds and personal concierge.
On the very rare occasion, I did splurge for a seat, it was mere seconds after I sat down that someone came over looking to collect. I saved money by almost always just lying my towel in an empty bit of sand and never having to worry about theft or my personal space.

Whether you’re staying on the most populous and best-equipped island or any of the more remote paradise islets that surround it, you will be met with long stretches of virtually deserted white-sand beaches glistening against the turquoise waters and beautiful palm tree-lined promenades.
The British Virgin Islands host, on average, 83,000 tourists every year.
If you’re looking for some utter relaxation away from the hordes of holidaymakers flocking into Mexico’s gentrified mega-resorts, then the BVI will definitely feel a lot more exclusive.
According to 2019 estimates, the islands have a population of about 30,000 British subjects, and due to their relatively compact sizes – the main island, Tortola, is only 12 miles long – their capacity is reduced. In other words, expect fewer crowds.
One of a handful of five-star listings on Booking.com, the Sugar Mill Hotel has deluxe double rooms with sea views starting at US $399.
Still, within the US $400-US $500 price range, the Long Bay Beach Resort, 7 km from Road Town, the main settlement on Tortola, offers overnight stays from US $489, but if you’re on a tighter budget, you will find guesthouse stays as cheap as US $81 per night in the city center.
Tropical Vibes
As a natural world destination, the British Virgin Islands boast unique biodiversity and a truly pristine nature you are unlikely to find anywhere else in the overtouristed subgroup.
Comprising more than 50 islands, the BVI is famous for having stunning beaches lined with coral reefs, scenic coastal drives, volcanic terrain, and unspoiled rainforests serving as natural parks dotted with tourist trails and wildlife observation areas.
It is somewhere you go for disconnecting from the craziness of the modern world, placing it at the front of the ‘digital detox’ travel trend.
If lying on the warm sands all day as the Caribbean Sea caresses your feet under the bright tropical sun, notifications off, sounds like your idea of fun, these unheard-of islands are definitely where you should be headed.
As tourism isn’t as prominent in the BVI as in their Caribbean counterparts, and the islanders enjoy a high level of social development due to their status under the British flag, you are extremely unlikely to be disturbed by beach vendors or even face safety issues.
Your only job is to kick back, relax, and take in the oceanic vibes.
Unique Culture
The BVI may be primarily a resort destination, but it is also an incredibly underrated cultural site waiting to be discovered.
Originally inhabited by indigenous Americans hailing from the continent’s South, the islands were re-settled by Europeans following Christopher Columbus’ second excursion into the Americas in 1493, after which they were renamed ‘British Virgin Islands’.
Throughout the centuries, the archipelago would fall under the control of several different empires, being administered by the English, Dutch, French, the Danish, and even the Spanish, who fought their Anglo-Saxon rivals in an attempt to assert their Empire’s borders in the New World.
Ultimately, the territory would return to British control when it became an important trading hub associated with the sugar cane trade.
During this period, a large number of enslaved Africans would be forcibly brought to the BVI to work in the fields.
Today, the archipelago’s multi-ethnic populace is reflective of centuries upon centuries of racial diversity and intermarriage, though Afro-Caribbean descendants continue to form a majority. Nonetheless, all islands are British citizens.
For those interested in the complex History of the BVI, especially tourists who would like to add in some culture to their sunny break, there are four major museums in Tortola where they can learn more:

The Old Government House, the official residence of the archipelago’s Governor, originally built in 1899

Direct Flights
Finally, if you’re thinking the BVI are not worth the hassle as they are more remote than other resorts a stone’s throw away from home, you might want to reconsider upon learning that the first-ever nonstop flight between the mainland U.S. and the territory has launched recently.
Offered by American Airlines, the inaugural three-hour journey took place on June 1, linking Miami to the BVI’s main international airport on Beef Island.
Although it is not the capital or most populous island, it is connected to Tortola via the landmark Queen Elizabeth Bridge, spanning the bright-blue sea.
The daily flight will remain operational through August 14, pausing in the fall before restarting service in November.
Overall, the BVI administration estimated that more than 2,100 monthly visitors would be transported to the archipelago during active months.
The flights depart Miami at 10:07 a.m. arriving at Beef Island at 1:06 p.m. Returning to America, guests will take off at 1:47 p.m., touching down in Miami at 4:25 p.m.
Additional flights have also been added on certain June dates due to strong demand.
As stated by BVI Premier Natalio Wheatley, ‘this is the first time in history that a flight has completely sold out in such a short amount of time‘, and the administration is grateful to American Airlines for partnering with them in fulfilling this long-awaited service. ‘bringing ease and accessibility’ to the ‘treasured’ destination.
Round-trip flights from Miami start from US $998 and US $503 from San Juan in Puerto Rico.
Low-cost options are non-existent, as both seat availability and capacity are lower, but this is a more exclusive destination where you’ll be able to truly enjoy the natural wonders of the Caribbean without battling for a spot in the sun amid the raging crowds.
For some, that might be worth the extra hundred bucks.
The Mexican Caribbean is the go-to spot for Americans traveling abroad.
With its turquoise waters, charming coastal settlements, and wellness scene, there is truly no better place for sunseekers to be, but if Cancun no longer appeals to you, then vacationing in a smaller beach destination away from the big city that’s surging in popularity, this might be your best bet.
Akumal Is The Next Trendy Caribbean Spot
Akumal is one of the trendiest beach resorts in the Maya Riviera, with the Secretary of Tourism of Mexico reporting occupancy rates of 87.6% for the first quarter of 2023.
According to a report issued by the entity, it already outpaces well-established tourist towns like Playa del Carmen, its closest competitor in the Caribbean (86.6%), Cabo San Lucas on the Pacific coast (84.5%), New Nayarit (84.4%), Puerto Vallarta (83.6%), and even the mighty Cancun (80.5%).
As we have discussed previously, while Cancun remains Mexico’s number one sunny hub in terms of overall figures, largely due to its record-breaking tourism – last year, over 30 million arrivals were recorded in Cancun Airport – it has long ceased being the fastest-growing destination.
For months now, it has been bumped off the number one spot by competing cities as returning travelers and first-time visitors alike look for alternatives to the jam-packed Mayan city.
In a way, it feels like Cancun is yesterday’s news, and places like Akumal, and the lesser-known Bacalar, are finally getting the hype they deserve.
What Can Akumal Offer?
Akumal is a small coastal community of roughly 1,300 inhabitants, sitting between the much busier Playa del Carmen and Tulum, 62 miles south of Cancun.
It straddles both Akumal and Half Moon Bays, two of the most scenic swimming sites in the state of Quintana Roo, where marine life still thrives, and overtourism has yet to drive out a majority of the locals with its associated gentrification.
Due to its size, it can feel more exclusive, with a more limited selection of hotels, resorts, and luxury stays than internationalized Cancun. More specifically, there are only 23 five-star properties listed on Booking.com, against Cancun’s 48 or Tulum’s 32.
Though it is a lot smaller, it is by no means less well-equipped, offering visitors both all-inclusive resorts – the adults-only Unico Hotel Riviera Maya is a perfect romantic getaway for couples – and charming, boutique hotels nestled in the jungle, where you can go ‘glamping’.
Fellow budget travelers, rejoice: unlike other Caribbean destinations, Akumal still warmly welcomes us.
A king room with a garden view at the three-star Akumal Natura Glamping costs a mere USD$84 for an overnight in June, while private stays at the colorful Del Sol Beachfront Hotel are on the market for USD$89.
All in all, whether you’re the splurging type or a budget-conscious vacationer, Akumal has some great deals for you.
Beautiful Natural Attractions
Seen from above, it looks like a beautiful crescent lapped by crystal-clear waters, and although it is a miniature development zone, it certainly has no shortage of attractions.
Other than the beautiful beaches, most notably the landmark Playa Akumal, a sandy extension of coast bounded by the translucent waters of the Caribbean, tourists have access to a monkey sanctuary, inland, shallow, family-friendly cenotes, such as Ya-kul, and relaxation spas.
Basing yourself in Akumal, you can also take a few day trips out to explore the Tulum Ruins or spend a day at the Xel-ha aquatic theme park. Adult tickets start from USD $89, including all food, drinks, and unlimited snorkeling.
But first and foremost, Akumal is a natural oasis where people go to escape the hustle and bustle of Cancun.
If you’re wary of the latter’s mega resorts and Instagram crowds, and you’re hoping to have a more relaxed Caribbean experience, then this is the place for you.
Mexico Is Set For A Record-Breaking Year In Tourism
Overall, Mexico has reached occupancy rates of 60.5% in Q1, 9.5 percentage points higher than in 2022, which indicates the country could be set for yet another record-breaking year once the December count is in.
In beach areas, an average of 142,685 rooms were filled, against 124,300 in the previous year, at a year-on-year increase of 14.8%. In terms of occupancy, this means an even higher rate of 71.7%, surpassing that of the national average, which accounts not only for coastal zones but also for inland destinations like the country’s capital, Mexico City, or the beautiful Guanajuato.
Though it faces strong competition, Akumal has resurfaced as one of the leading beach zones amid Mexico’s post-crisis tourism revival.
Despite being an extremely popular destination among sunseekers, tourism in the Mediterranean has always been concentrated in its Westernmost part, where Spain, France, Italy and the like are located.
While the powerhouse trio tends to see the most crowds over summer, other destinations in the lesser-explored East are largely ignored by newcomers, especially those lying outside the European Union, often perceived as less-developed or maybe not worth the detour.
As it turns out, Europe’s most promising summer destination is neither the Amalfi Coast nor Côte d’Azur, but a small Mediterranean country very few Americans visit, and that could soon outpace your favorite beach getaway in terms of tourism recovery:
Montenegro Is The Next Trendy Mediterranean Hotspot
Nestled between Albania and Croatia and sharing other land borders with fellow Balkan states Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro is a tiny European nation boasting stunning nature and a dramatic coastline.
At only 5,332 square miles, its topography is quite rugged, with mountains comprising more than two-thirds of the territory. Featuring numerous hiking spots – for the delight of travelers – deep valleys, and inland basins, it is perhaps Europe’s most underrated natural world destination.
Dubbed the Montenegrin ‘Dolomites’, in reference to Northern Italy’s famous jagged peaks, the Durmitor National Park is a popular nature spot and UNESCO-protected site. A part of the Dinaric Alps, it features a whopping 18 glacial lakes scattered around the scenic Jezerska Površ plateau.

The Breathtaking Beauty Of Kotor
The Bay has seen human activity since Antiquity, and it is dotted with well-kept ancient towns, each of them so incredibly picturesque it’s hard to pick a favorite. A strong contender is Kotor, the largest and busiest of the Dalmatian settlements.
A busy cruise port, Kotor is where tourism in the Bay is centered, drawing in millions of visitors every year, who cram into its labyrinth-like, walled Old Town to admire the Romanesque churches, charming cobbled streets, and imposing hilltop fortress overlooking the Mediterranean inlet.
Other attractions in Kotor Bay are the traditional Dalmatian villages of Risan, Tivat, and Perat, known for their medieval heritage.
Perast is a popular day trip from Kotor Town due to its quaint harbor and proximity to Our Lady of the Rocks, an islet housing a historic church, and its adjacent museum.

Moving further away from Kotor, as they travel down the dreamy Adriatic route, visitors will find a rapidly-developing resort scene, particularly around the coastal town of Budva, where international luxury brands like the Meliá will be opening new grand properties soon.
Distinguished by its wealth of amenities and affordability, Montenegro’s resort strip is on track to become Europe’s go-to summer getaway, with overnight rates at all-inclusive, five-star listings like the landmark Azul Beach Resort starting at just USD$138 per night.
Google lists a further 31 luxury properties worthy of consideration, renowned for their elegance, unique take on wellness, and haute Mediterranean cuisine.
Unlike other Med hubs, where luxury trends have pushed out budget travelers, middle-income earners and backpackers are still welcome in Montenegro.
Whether it’s comfortable youth hostels and guesthouses, or affordable yet well-equipped AirBnBs, they will still be able to bask in the Montenegrin sun without taking a huge financial hit.
With summer knocking on our doors and temperatures rising fast, it’s hardly a surprise vacationers are already flocking to Southern Europe in record numbers.
Sometimes described as ‘Croatia on a budget‘, Montenegro is becoming increasingly known as a result of its attractive prices, great weather, crystal-clear waters, and inestimable cultural wealth.
Montenegro Is Open Restriction-Free
In addition to its impressive tourist offer and competitivity, Montenegro is open for tourism restriction-free, like the rest of Europe. This means foreigners are welcome irrespective of vaccination status and without the need to undergo testing prior to entry.
There are no direct flights between the United States and Canada and the Mediterranean nation, but low-cost offers are plentiful, departing from numerous European transit hubs, including a selection of German, Eastern European, and British airports.
Most seasonal routes serve Tivat, the main airport on the Montenegrin coast, and Podgorica, Montenegro’s inland capital. Tivat is the best airport to fly into if you’re hitting the Montenegro coast.
The city of Dubrovnik, in Croatia, only 92.3km from Kotor, also hosts seasonal flights from Newark beginning July through September. From there, Kotor-bound visitors can take a cross-border bus or private shuttle to reach the Montenegrin Bay.

Bologna is a city that is small but perfectly formed, meaning that it’s easy to get around on foot.
You can walk from one end of the city to the other in just a couple of hours: unless you get distracted and stop to eat or look at something beautiful!
There is an abundance of self-guided walking tours available in the city, and it’s a very pleasant city to walk around because there are very few hills.
If you’d rather save your energy, there is an affordable city bus service, with tickets starting from just 1.30 euros per journey.
A City Rich With Culture
Bologna city canter has been designated UNESCO heritage status, naming it the ‘City of Porticoes’ thanks to the many porticoes the city contains.
A portico is a porch that sits at the entrance of a building, usually supported by columns, and you will find dozens of these in Bologna.
But it is not just these architectural curiosities that attract visitors to Bologna. The Piazza Maggiore sits in the heart of the city and is a cultural and social hub: there’s no better place to go to people-watch.
The Two Towers of Bologna are also a unique focal point, both leaning as the more-famous tower at Pisa does and dominating the skyline of the city.

You would be forgiven for thinking that because Bologna is a small city, it is a sleepy city, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.
