You can’t beat the Italian Alps when it comes to skiing. There’s a reason why this is a world-renowned ski destination.

The mountains in northern Italy have great conditions for skiing as well as other winter sports like snowboarding. The Alps cover all of northern Italy, with the Dolomites in the northeastern part of the country being particularly popular with skiers.

There are tons of great ski destinations located within the regions of Valle d’Aosta, Piemonte, and Trentino-Alto Adige.

Several of the world’s best ski resorts are located in Italy, such as Racines-Giovo and Carezza.

Affordable Flights

Here’s where you might be thinking that a ski trip to Italy is way out of budget. Surely flying to Europe is more expensive than flying to a ski destination in the United States?

But for many Americans, especially those on the East Coast, flying to Italy can actually be cheaper than flying domestically!

That’s because Milan, the city closest to northern Italy’s ski towns, is a major flight hub and it’s often possible to find good deals on airfare. Winter is also the off-season for flights to Italy (especially January through March) so you can save even more money.

For example, looking at nonstop flights out of New York’s JFK for a week-long trip in February yields the following round-trip prices:
- JFK to Vail, Colorado: $1,129
- JFK to Jackson Hole, Wyoming: $1,298
- JFK to Milan, Italy: $648
As you can see, it’s actually significantly cheaper to fly nonstop to Milan than it is to Vail or Jackson Hole.

Budget-Friendly Accommodations

Another thing about northern Italy ski towns that is cheaper than the United States?

Budget-friendly accommodations! Whether you choose a hotel or a self-catering rental, you can often save a lot of money in Italy compared to similar properties in the United States.

According to BudgetYourTrip, the average nightly price for a hotel room in Vail, Colorado is $887 per night. This isn’t even for five-star luxury hotels — it’s just the average for ALL hotels.

There are obviously cheaper ski destinations in the U.S. than Vail, but you still might end up spending $500+ a night on accommodation during ski season.

Meanwhile, in northern Italy, you can find much better deals on accommodation. According to BudgetYourTrip, the average nightly price for a hotel room in Livigno, Italy (a popular ski destination) is just $145 per night.

Cheaper Ski Lift Passes

You can also save big on ski lift passes in Italy compared to the United States.

Lift ticket pricing in the U.S. is out of control, with the cost of a weekday pass in Vail, Colorado reaching a sky-high $229 this season. A weekend pass will set you back $269.

Meanwhile, a day pass in Racines-Giovo, one of Italy’s top ski resorts, is only around €60 ($65 USD.)

This is a huge savings, and it really adds up over the course of your ski vacation.

In addition to lift tickets being cheaper, you can also save money on other aspects of your trip, such as ski lessons and ski rentals.

After three years of confusing travel rules, 2023 finally marked the comeback of tourism across the globe.

Throughout the year, we have seen a boom in bookings as travelers took to the skies in droves in search of that bucket list spot they could only dream about visiting a while back (but couldn’t).

As per usual, Google has been tracking this fast-growing trend, and in the top ten of their ‘Year in Search’ list, one country in particular was highlighted as the most sought-after destination in its own continent, as well as a cultural behemoth awaiting (re)discovery now that normality has resumed.

Egypt is the eighth most-searched country currently, and with record growth expected ahead of the annual round-up, it seems pretty safe to say it has been one of 2023’s rising stars.

The question is: why?

Why Is Egypt So Popular In Google Searches Right Now?

A country as ancient as civilization itself, Egypt has been on the radar of Americans for years, and you know already why that may be.

It is the land of Pharaos, boasting unique landscapes, a fascinating culture, and a plethora of world wonders.

We won’t bore you with yet another copy-and-paste article on the marvels of pyramid-dotted Egypt: there are plenty of those doing the rounds already.

Instead, we would like to divert your attention to why Egypt is trending right now, and posting record rates of growth in 2023 specifically, and what has changed compared to previous years.

In other words, why are more Americans taking the 11-hour-plus Transatlantic flight to Cairo when there is an exhaustive list of alternative destinations they could explore instead?

Egypt Was A Less Tense To Visit In 2023

First of all, if you’ve been to Egypt at all in the last two or three years, and you have returned yet again in 2023, you might have noticed the atmosphere is a lot less tense.

The pandemic has finally subsided, and the unfathomable sanitary controls that changed with little warning numerous times in the span of a single week no longer apply.

U.S. citizens – in fact, every other foreigner – can once again visit Egypt curb-free.

Other than the visa-on-arrival policy, a bureaucratic hurdle the Egyptian Government is yet to loosen, you are no longer required to satisfy health-related entry requirements, fill out complicated forms at the airport, or observe crazy rules while being a guest at a resort.

The return of normality is one reason why Egypt’s soaring in popularity in 2023, but that is not all.

After all, every single country has axed restrictions as well, some much sooner than Egypt.

Is Egyptomania Back?

This brings us to reason number two, and perhaps the most important one of all: the renewed interest in cultural expeditions among Americans.

2023 has been the year of the culturephile, and the resurgence of South American colonial cities, off-path Europe, and mystical Southeast Asia as trendy tourism hotspots only go to show there are truly no limits as to how far Westerners will go to have more meaningful experiences when traveling.

In terms of cultural expeditions, Egypt is really a no-brainer.

Its History dates back several millennia, and some of the oldest structures created by man can be found within its borders, including the Great Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza, but these alone can’t explain Egyptomania picking up steam this year specifically.

Instead, we must look at new developments that are fuelling more searches, and thus holiday bookings than the expected average, and the biggest one of them is the soon-to-be-launched Great Egyptian Museum, opening in early 2024.

20 years in the making, and to the tune of a billion dollars, this majestic center for the culture and sciences is finally bowing after much anticipation, presenting to the public for the first time a vast selection of artifacts that previously did not have a permanent home.

One of them is Tutankhamen’s sarcophagus, its associated 5,000 artifacts that were unearthed when the legendary Pharao’s tomb was discovered in the 1920s, a 3,200-year-old statue of Ramses the Great, and the relatively well-preserved sun-powered, 2,500-year-old Khufu ship.

Aside from the cultural stuff, a string of new hotel openings and experiences has improved Egypt’s tourist offer this year, from a luxurious Four Seasons palace in Sharm El Sheik, the country’s leading resort city, to the announcement of a new 282-key state-of-the-art Hilton in Marsa Alam.

Elsewhere along the Nile, cruise liner Viking has debuted one of its most remarkable products yet, the five-star Viking Aton river cruise, taking guests on a 12-day ‘Pharaos & Pyramids’ adventure, starting with a three-night stay in Cairo before proceeding to an eight-day journey down the Nile.

Points of interest include the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens, as well as its counterpart Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings, visits to the Temples of Khnum, Dendera, Abu Simbel, and High Dam, and traditional Nubian villages.

All in all, it’s an exciting period to visit Egypt, as the country is waking up from its pandemic slumber, and it has a number of tricks up its sleeve.

Did we mention already it even has its own Bali? Yep. Get those flight tickets right away.

Egypt Is Affordable By Western Standards

Finally, a huge part of why Egypt is racking up large arrival numbers is its high affordability.

For an all-expenses-paid vacation on the Red Sea coast, you will likely have to fork out at least a couple thousand dollars for a one-week stint at a resort, but for those on a budget and who are not necessarily looking to splurge on a vacation, they can definitely get by on a ‘mid’ $361 for the week.

The figure is based on data gathered by Budget Your Trip, and includes acommodation, transport, food, and tourist attractions.

According to the platform, in the past travelers have spent on average $26 per day, or the equivalent in the local currency, when opting for a mid-range style of travel, or a very reasonable $68 when indulging in some luxury.

The average cost of an overnight at a budget hotel is $23, though it can be a lot more expensive depending on a traveler’s preferences and whether they are the Four Seasons or family-owned, affordable neighborhood hotel type.

The point is that consumer prices in Egypt are typically lower for tourists due to the devalued currency, and that is why it won’t weigh heavily on anyone’s pockets, even if they are actively looking to spend more on comfort.

Egypt has made its mark in 2023 as one of the trendiest destinations of the post-pandemic scene, and based on Google searches alone, it could be set for a historical 2024.

The world capital for backpacking tourism, Southeast Asia (SEA), has a newfound fame as a digital nomad hotspot.

Hardly a shock, seeing that a majority of SEA countries offer low prices and tropical weather, but while it’s not unexpected that Bali, Phuket, or even up-and-coming Vietnam would see a surge in nomads, an unlikely destination is challenging the tried-and-true hotspots for the number one spot.

Forget about the overcrowded beaches, complicated visa rules, and safety concerns: next year, it’s the unheard-of Malaysian Penang where you should be headed.

Penang Is The Next Asian Nomad Hotspot

According to the latest report issued by NomadList, tracking travel trends among digital nomads, Penang, a lesser-known state in Malaysia is currently one of the fastest-growing destinations for this subcategory, overtaking the much more famous Vietnamese Hanoi and Saigon, and even Filipino Manila.

In fact, it is currently the fifth fastest-growing nomad destination worldwide, fenced off from the top four by Tokyo, Da Nang in Vietnam, Seoul in South Korea, and Malaysia’s own capital Kuala Lumpur.

Yet, this begs the question: why is Penang getting so popular?

Penang Is Low-Risk And Well-Equipped

For starters, Malaysia as a whole is one of Southeast Asia’s best-developed and, thus, safest countries.

Unlike its neighbors, it is considered an upper-middle-income country, which means poverty rates are lower, the public sector receives more funding and is thus better equipped, being able to provide citizens and foreign residents alike better services, and safety levels are high.

As for Penang specifically, it has its off-path appeal working in its favor.

Malaysia is an incredibly diverse country, home to peoples of different ethnicities and religions, including Muslim, Buddhist, and Christian, and Penang is often considered Malaysia’s most highly diverse state: not one group holds a demographic majority.

When traveling around Penang, which includes both a large island and a section of the Malay Peninsula, on the mainland, nomads are likely to encounter different cultural manifestations, customs, cuisine, and even languages, making it incredibly exciting to have as a base.

A Beautiful State Capital

George Town, the state capital (located on Penang Island), is not only a ‘Gamma’ level global city of huge economic importance to Malaysia, home to young entrepreneurs and creative hubs but also a vibrant, 700,000-people-strong metropolis and a cultural center.

From the historical, British-built, 18th-century Fort Cornwallis and a picturesque European-style colonial core to the rapidly-developing business district, with its contrasting skyscrapers and fast-paced life, George Town offers long-term residents the best of both worlds.

Extremely well-prepared to host international residents, George Town has a plethora of work-friendly internet cafes and coworking offices for remote workers to pick from, other than being incredibly affordable.

In total, nomads are expected to spend, on average, US$1,164 working remotely from George Town while exploring the wider Penang Island and the state’s mainland territories.

Internet is also ‘fast’ – NomadList reports an average speed of 26Mbps – the temperature is warm, though it can get unbearably humid in the rainy season, safety levels are high, and most importantly, air quality is ‘great’, a rare feat among Southeast Asian cities.

Sitting opposite of Penang Island, on the Penang mainland, the city of Seberang Perai is the state’s largest, as well as Malaysia’s third-largest urban center, but it lacks George Town’s cultural appeal and eclectic architecture.

An Underrated Tourist Destination

We could argue Penang – particularly Penang Island – is one of Malaysia’s most underrated tourist destinations.

The offshore spot has a high concentration of unspoiled maritime reserves, sandy beaches, forested areas, and quaint seaside villages, with the following listed as some of the top points of interest in Penang by TripAdvisor:
- The Tropical Spice Garden, where over 500 plant species can be admired, and visitors can participate in cooking courses
- The Habitat Penang Hill, an ecotourism project where guests can come in close contact with the jungle environment and learn from it
- Batu Ferringhi Beach, a long sandy crescent lapped by azure waters, and a popular swimming spot for locals and tourists alike
- The Batu Ferringhi Night Market, with over 100 food stalls serving traditional Malay, and pan-Asian food
- The Historic Streets of George Town, a UNESCO-protected zone in the state capital where native Southeast Asian and European architecture form a unique townscape
- The Kek Lok Si Temple, simply the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia, housing as many as 10,000 Buddha statues
- Penang National Park, a peaceful reserve traversed by walking trails, which zig-zag into and out of the jungle, and bordered by the seafront
As if the cultural and natural attractions, the affordability, and the warm weather were not a strong enough draw, Malaysia has its own simplified Digital Nomad Visa, possibly the easiest and least expensive to qualify for in Asia.

How Does The Malaysian DNV Work?

It is dubbed the DE Rantau Pass, and all digital freelancers, IT workers carrying out activities for foreign-based companies, and young entrepreneurs can apply when proving they make at least US$2,000 per month, or around US$24,000 per year.

This visa enables applicants to remain in Malaysia for longer than the usual 90 days granted to tourists.

However, nomads staying in the medium term can still travel to the country bureaucracy-free – depending, of course, on nationality-based requirements.

Americans can stay in Malaysia visa-free for up to 3 months, unlike in other Asian destinations like Vietnam, where they must apply for a visa in advance, or Thailand, where visa-free entry is granted, but the maximum time of permitted stay is 30 days.

This makes not only Penang but the whole of Malaysia incredibly attractive to young digital nomads.

While Tulum can be a great destination, its ridiculously high prices are causing its popularity to wane as travelers seek out more budget-friendly alternatives.

In Tulum, it’s possible to spend $25 on a five-minute taxi ride or up to $1,000 per night for a hotel room (that may be less than impressive.) But in Akumal, you can get a much better value for your money.

One of the biggest draws of Akumal is that it’s a great destination for experiencing the natural beauty of the Riviera Maya and the surrounding areas.

Tulum has become highly developed and commercialized, but Akumal is much more natural. It’s known for being a haven for scuba divers and snorkelers.

The jewel of the Baltic is the proud home to the Helsinki Christmas Market, one of Europe’s oldest and largest, where tourists are welcome to sample reindeer meat, salmon pastries and savory pancakes, and other Nordic delicacies they can’t find easily in the imports section of their local market back home.

Finland may not be every American’s go-to pick for some Northern Lights hunting, with Alaska and Iceland easily taking the lead in bookings, but it still stands among Europe’s top aurora sightsing hotspots.

More specifically, the historical ethno-region of Lapland, which sits mostly north of the Arctic Line, close to the borders with Sweden and Norway, is your best bet at witnessing the elusive light show.

Finally, winter is the absolute best period to dive into Finland’s sauna culture. The practice of sauna was, after all, invented in the territory of modern-day Finland several centuries ago.

An immaterial cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO, the Finnish sauna is the country’s top tourist activity, and it seems to be as inherent to Finnish nation-making and psyche as a national anthem, a flag, and a national language would be.

The concept of a Finnish sauna involves taking a dip in the ice-cold Baltic Sea – hence why winter is ideal for visiting Finland – and rushing back inside into a steam room to seek some comfort from the bone-chilling cold.

It’s the extremities on both ends of the experience that make it worthwhile: you’re either feeling too warm being cooked alive in a 100-degree cubicle, or you’re standing outside where strong Northern winds are blowing – a pint of draft black beer in hand to keep you warm and more cheerful, of course.

And believe us when we say it feels amazingly rejuvenating, and it’s the best feeling when you step into a fuming sauna after being out in the cold, and vice versa.

How To Get To Finland This Winter

This winter, Finnair is offering nonstop flights to Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport (HEL) from Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, and New York-JFK, making it easy for Americans to reach the Nordic country.

If it’s a multi-country trip you’re thinking of, you’ll be glad to know Helsinki boasts flight connections to several popular European winter destinations, including Paris, London, Prague, and Budapest, as well as ferry connections to at least two other countries: Sweden and Estonia.

Traveling by ferry between Helsinki and Tallinn, the medieval capital of Estonia, takes only two and a half hours, making it a feasible day trip for tourists staying longer in Helsinki.

Combining Finland with a trip to fellow Nordic country Sweden, Americans can hop on the overnight Tallink ferry, traveling for a total duration of 18 hours, and calling at the cruise port in Stockholm, where they can also board return flights to the States.
