Summer is finally over, which means the high season for traveling to Europe is nearing its end as well.

In only a few weeks, stronger winds will sweep across the Old Continent, and several popular tourist hotspots will begin shutting down as they prepare for the colder months to come.

While a Transatlantic trip could sound less attractive to some in a colder climate, it’s worth noting not all of Europe will be cooling down in the immediate future. In fact, much of Southern Europe could stay warm and make for a perfect off-season getaway.

Here are 4 lesser-known sunny spots in Europe that are set to enjoy high, summer-like temperatures throughout this fall and also smaller crowds:

Menton, France

A hidden pearl of France’s Côte d’Azur, Menton is the last French town before the border with Italy, and understandably so, very multicultural in character.

Its pastel-colored, closely packed buildings feel more Italian than French proper, and you may even hear Ligurian dialects spoken on the streets.

Either way, Menton is a one-of-a-kind weekend getaway. Sandwiched between two countries, it combines both the traditional charm of the Italian Riviera – think a slow-paced lifestyle, fresh citron pressé and cobblestones – and the unspoken elegance of the French Mediterranean.

Though the local beach is pebbly, which may be a bit of a nuisance to some, the waters are crystal clear, and the long boardwalk is incredibly multicultural to stroll, lined with gelato stalls and artisan workshops and stretching all the way into Italy.

Additionally, staying at a 3-star hotel in Old Town Menton will set you back by only $76 per night this fall.

Paphos, Cyprus

One of the trendiest resort zones in the Eastern Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus, Paphos is renowned for its year-round warmer weather, long, endless miles of sandy beaches, and turquoise-colored shallow lagoons.

As it is geographically located in the Middle East – despite being culturally European – Cyprus boasts scorching summers and pleasantly warm autumns, with the best time to visit being actually between August and late October, when it’s not too hot out.

Visiting Paphos this fall, you will be met with less crowded beaches, a more youthful atmosphere, as there will be very few families on vacation, and affordable beachfront stays, with rates starting at only $121 for the Queens Bay Hotel on Booking.com this October.

Sanlucar de Barrameda, Spain

An autonomous region within Spain, Andalusia is the hottest region in all of Europe this fall, with temperatures soaring above 86°F degrees across several cities, but if there’s one beach spot that is set to make headlines, what with its vibrant nightlife and summery weather, is Sanlucar.

Officially called Sanlucar de Barrameda, it is a smaller coastal city on the shores of the Mediterranean, a short one-hour drive from Seville, home to an array of different historical sights, including a medieval castle and a charming Old Town, and a 6 km-long, 50 meter-wide sandy beach.

Plenty of space to lounge and bask in the sun, especially in the low season, when most holidaymakers will have already made it back home.

With hotel rates as cheap as $64, Sanlucar is one of the most affordable sunny breaks in this part of the world.

Hvar, Croatia

A paradise island off the mainland coast of Dalmatia, one of the main ethnic groups comprising the country of Croatia, Hvar has been recently named the new ‘Ibiza’, in recognition of its subtropical atmosphere, paradisaical beaches, up-and-coming resort scene, and riotous nightlife.

Throughout the tourist season, which lasts from summer until late fall, guests will find a myriad of beach clubs and bars operating until late hours, including the trendiest one on the island, Carpe Diem, and the central Veneranda Club, hosting techno parties and famous DJ sets.

The cost of accommodation for one-week stays in Hvar this fall will set you back by roughly $2,000 for a mid-range B&B or hotel room, with overnight rates at the extremely popular Amfora Hvar Grand Beach Resort starting from only $162.

As a cultural destination, this small island is not to be underestimated, either, as it is home to one of Croatia’s oldest settlements in Stari Grad and centuries-old historical fortresses that rival Dubronvik’s in beauty.

Why Hotels Are Cheaper Than Airbnb In Most Destinations, According To New Report

Airbnb has been getting a bad rap recently. In 2021, Barcelona became the first European city to effectively ban Airbnb. A cascade of cities and even counties followed.

Then, earlier this month, New York followed suit by banning booking service platforms like Airbnb from offering short-term unregistered rentals in the city.

And to add insult to injury, now a new report from Which? has found that Airbnb’s aren’t actually any cheaper than hotels in most destinations anyway.

The study found that a one-bedroom short-term let from a platform such as Airbnb is more expensive than a hotel room in 38 of the 50 destinations surveyed.

This might come as a surprise to many because when they first launched, private rental sites such as Airbnb and Vrbo offered a cheaper alternative to booking a hotel in many in-demand cities.

These are the destinations where the differences were the biggest:

Big Savings In Capital Cities

Hotels were cheaper than Airbnb in every capital city included in the investigation.

The following 7 capital cities are a clear example of this:

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in Amsterdam is $224. The average price of a hotel room is $143.

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in Singapore is $174. The average price of a hotel room is $100.

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in Greater London is $200. The average price of a hotel room is $126.

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in Dubai is $157. The average price of a hotel room is $87.

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in Barcelona is $172. The average price of a hotel room is $116.

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in Hong Kong is $121. The average price of a hotel room is $65.

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in San Fransisco is $201. The average price of a hotel room is $157.

New York, New York

Because the effective banning of Airbnb in New York has been such a big media focus in the past couple of months, the study also looked at the costs of hotels versus Airbnb in New York City.

It found that not only were Airbnb’s in the city more expensive than equivalent hotel rooms but also that many New York options still listed on the site are actually illegal.

You are no longer allowed to rent out a whole home for less than 30 days in New York. This means that the only legal Airbnb options in the city are those where the owner resides in the property and where the property is officially registered for short-term rental.

This change is expected to drive up nightly rates in the city further.

The trend of banning Airbnb and other short-term rental sites is only set to continue. From October 1 Scotland will also introduce a restrictive licensing scheme for short-term lets, for example.

Are Hotel Rooms Really Better?

When asked to respond to the study, Airbnb said “This data is wrong and based on flawed methodology” because private lets generally have more space than hotel rooms.

And it is worth mentioning that when you book an Airbnb, you will typically have more space than a hotel room. But this isn’t always the case.

You will also often have a kitchen or cooking facilities, which means you could save money in the long run if you compare the costs of eating out with the costs of cooking for yourself.

It is ideal if you enjoy cooking for yourself on vacation but not important if you feel eating out is part of the fun of the trip.

Finally, the Which? study concludes that a bigger Airbnb may still be better value for a group as the cost of a larger let is often cheaper than the combined cost of several hotel rooms. Many families also prefer the space and flexibility offered by Airbnb.

But in terms of cost alone, in most cases, a hotel room will be cheaper than an Airbnb rental.

These Are The 3 Most Popular Destinations In Greece To Visit This Fall

Greece has wrapped up the summer season as Europe’s top destination, surpassing the likes of Spain, France, and even Italy.

It’s clear that tourists are flocking to the country’s idyllic, white-sanded beaches in record numbers.

What many of us couldn’t have predicted, though, is the fact that Greece is continuing to attract a remarkable amount of visitors now that the temperatures have dropped and the beaches that filled our Instagram feeds just a few weeks ago have closed down.

According to the INSETE research body, the Mediterranean country is expecting over 4 million international visitors this month, and there are three destinations that have recorded the largest increase in tourists since last year.

Thessaloniki

This highly influential port city is set to become Greece’s trendiest hotspot this fall, expecting the biggest visitor arrival increase for September – a jump of almost 20% from the same time last year.

With an estimated 315,000 tourists arriving this month, Thessaloniki is about to turn into the country’s liveliest hotspot.

You can expect some of the city’s main attractions (The White Tower of Thessaloniki, Aristotelous Square, The Archeological Museum of Thessaloniki, and the ancient Roman Forum) to be extra busy during weekends, so make sure to plan ahead.

Since Greece is mostly known as a summer destination in the international travel community, the fact that a port city like Thessaloniki can experience such a surge of visitors only once the temperatures cool down might come as a surprise.

However, if you ever get to see the city for yourself, you’ll see why it’s so much more than just another resort town.

For starters, though Thessaloniki lies adjacent to the Aegean Sea, sunbathing in the city is not an option.

Those who spend their summers here need to travel back and forth to nearby beaches if they want to tan or take a swim.

Instead of beaches, the city boasts a long, stunning promenade that borders the sea, offering unparalleled views, especially this time of the year.

Beware though, that nights can get pretty windy, so make sure to bring a jacket with you if you’re a fan of seaside walks.

Moreover, Thessaloniki is famous for its rich cultural scene and lively atmosphere, so once in the city, there’s plenty to do and see without having to go to the beach.

Aside from the more traditional attractions mentioned above, tourists can also enjoy modern exhibitions like the Museum of Illusions (a must-see, in my opinion), the vibrant bar scene, and the many diverse restaurants that offer excellent-quality food at competitive prices.

If you don’t have the time to sit down and eat between sightseeing trips, I recommend getting a bougatsa or gyro to go – Thessaloniki is known for being home to some of the best variations of both.

Shopping enthusiasts will have the time of their lives here. Aside from the numerous shops located near Aristotle Square, they can also find a great outlet center named One Salonica right near the outskirts of the city.

Some of the most popular brands in the world (Nike, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Guess, Lacoste, Levi’s, Tommy Hilfiger, etc.) sell their merchandise here at heavily discounted prices,

Athens

Though the capital comes in at number two in terms of its increase in visitors from last year (15.4%), it’s still drawing in the highest number of tourists in the country.

Over 1.2 million people from more than 45 countries are expected to visit Athens this September.

Between the Parthenon, the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora of Athens, and the many, many museums that proudly display the city’s rich history, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to filling up your itinerary with cultural landmarks.

Moreover, the city provides all the perks of spending a fun night out in a gorgeous Mediterranean city without all the extra costs of getting around a place like Rome or Milan.

Rhodes

The third spot on the list is held by Rhodes, a famous summer hotspot that continues to draw in more than 437,000 visitors a month even as its beaches start to empty.

The largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands has apparently recovered from the devastating fires of July, seeing a 7.1% increase in visitors this fall compared to the same time last year.

Home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the island holds remarkable cultural value that tourists are able to enjoy all year long.

Its natural beauty, delectable cuisine, and fun year-round events further explain why tourists are still flocking to the Greek island even though peak season is over.

Italy is one of the most popular international destinations for Americans this fall. Normally most popular in the summer, fall is becoming an increasingly popular time to visit.

Summer in Italy is peak season, with the months of July and August seeing the highest crowds. However, things considerably cool off (both literally and figuratively) in September and October.

If you want to visit Italy without having to fight your way through the crowds, fall is a great time to travel.

During the summer months, things can get out of control, especially in major tourist hotspots. Portofino, Italy went as far as imposing a €270 ($300) fine on tourists who block a popular pedestrian walkway to take selfies.

But during the fall, you won’t have to wait in a massive line at popular tourist attractions like Rome’s Colosseum or Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice. You won’t find yourself elbowing through crowds in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery or searching in vain for an open spot on the beach in Positano.

Instead, you can enjoy fewer crowds and a calmer pace of travel during the fall. Many popular spots are devoid of crowds during the fall since it’s still an underrated time to travel to Italy.

2. Better Weather

Another benefit to visiting Italy in the fall is the milder weather.

Unfortunately, Italy has been suffering from extreme heat waves during the past few summers.

In July, temperatures hit a record-breaking 118° F (48° C) in parts of Sardinia and Sicily, the latter of which suffered from debilitating and destructive fires sparked by the extreme heat.

Throughout the rest of the country, temperatures were regularly above 100° F (38° C) this summer. Such extreme heat takes the fun out of exploring Italy.

It’s hard to enjoy sightseeing at the Colosseum or the Roman Forum under the scorching sun, and it makes other outdoor activities like hiking in Cinque Terre unpleasant and borderline dangerous.

This is why fall is such a great time to visit Italy. In the southern part of the country, the weather cools down considerably, but it’s still warm enough that you can have a beach getaway in a destination like Sardinia or the Amalfi Coast.

In the northern part of the country, fall also brings pleasant, cooler weather to destinations like Venice that can be unbearable in the summer.

3. Cheaper Prices

Finally, cheaper prices are drawing more and more travelers to Italy during the fall.

From early June through the end of August, travelers can expect to pay elevated prices for hotels in Italy. Not to mention, flights are also much more expensive.

With flight prices up more than 25% in 2023, many travelers found the cost of a trip to Italy to be too much this summer. However, flights during the months of September, October, and November tend to be significantly cheaper than flights during the summer.

You can also save a fortune on hotels in Italy during the fall, especially in coastal destinations like the Amalfi Coast, Ischia, or Cinque Terre where fall marks the beginning of the “shoulder season” slump in tourism.

Although fall is becoming a more and more popular time of year to visit Italy, you can still take advantage of these benefits right now while it remains somewhat underrated.

This small town is located about fifteen minutes further up the Riviera Nayarit from Sayulita, but it feels much quieter. The town has a population of just 3,000 people, and it has not gotten as crowded as Sayulita yet.

If you want to spend time on the beach or go surfing in San Pancho, you’ll have less competition than you would in Sayulita.

Both Sayulita and San Pancho are very popular with tourists, but they still don’t see as much tourism as nearby Puerto Vallarta.

Out of those, 1.72 million were cruisegoers making landfall for a stopover, more than twice 2022’s numbers.

As Bartlett noted, this represents an increase of more than 24 percent in ‘gross tourism dollars earned’ in only seven months: ‘Coming out of the pandemic, tourism has consistently demonstrated its resilience and, as a result, the sector’s contribution to the Jamaican economy cannot be overlooked‘.

Since Jamaica reopened its borders last year, tourists have been flocking to the island in record numbers, and Americans make up a sizable percentage of those, as the United States is the most popular country of origin for arrivals.
