Other than its ‘metropolitan’ islands, such as Luzon, where the bustling national capital of Manila is located, or Cebu, where the sprawling Cebu City serves as a financial center, other smaller islands that make up the Philippines have retained their quaint character.

One such island is Palawan, with a population of over 900,000, distributed across the compact capital of Puerto Princesa, where around 300,000 live, and smaller settlements resting either on the coast or the mountainous, verdant inland.

Why Is Palawan So Trendy Right Now?

Puerto Princesa International Airport, the main entry point into the island, hosts only a limited number of flights, mostly domestic ones originating from within the Philippines, which helps keep tourism levels under control and preserve the island’s unique character.

It is, after all, known nationally as the Philippines’ ‘best island’, with Filipinos themselves selecting Palawan as their ‘preferred travel destination’. According to an official survey, as many as 23% of those surveyed express a desire to visit the island.

You may be wondering why that is so.

Palawan is best known for its miles on miles of unruffled sands, lapped by crystal-clear waters, exuberant marine biodiversity, and relaxed atmosphere. It is somewhere you go to escape the crazy traffic in Manila and the urbanization issues Cebu City faces.

Compared to other Southeast Asian islands, such as Thailand’s Phuket, it is a lot quieter and more peaceful, with fewer ‘entertainment zones’, and a stronger focus on ecotourism and wellness, which is sure to place Palawan at the front of Asia’s tourism rebound.

In case you have forgotten, wellness is one of the top travel trends this year.

Palawan Is A Force Of Nature

Some of the main attractions in Palawan include the capital of Puerto Princesa itself. It is traversed by a UNESCO-listed underground river and boasts some beautiful colonial-era architecture (if you need a little reminder, the Philippines was once under Spanish rule).

As these have been left virtually unscathed amid Southeast Asia’s struggle for independence from European powers, Palawan has a high concentration of historical churches, civic buildings, and monuments dating back to this period.

Its greatest asset, however, is its breathtaking nature, with long miles of sandy beaches surrounding the coast and turquoise lagoons. Travelers often describe Palawan as being ‘Avatar-like’, in reference to James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster film, set in a fantastical world of unique geological formations.

This description is not too far off, as Palawan is home to an extensive list of natural wonders. When seeking an escape into nature, visitors often head to El Nido beach, a tranquil swimming spot bounded by the bright-blue ocean and flanked by a steep karst cliff.

Day trips to smaller islands in the wider Palawan province are also a popular activity.

Palawan Tourism Is On The Rise

As Palawan News reports, the Filipino destination is recording a record surge in tourism this year in the wake of the country’s reopening for tourism and rekindled interest in Southeast Asia among foreigners, especially those coming from the Western Hemisphere and Europe.

The partial data recorded by the Department of Tourism, or Tourism Live Inventory and Statistics of Tourist Arrivals, shortened to TOURLIST, demonstrates that a total of 765,991 visitors visited Palawan between January and June 2023, at a whopping 136% increase year-on-year.

Out of those, nearly half are foreigners. As seen here, international visitors are becoming more numerous, but Palawan’s beaches, boutique hotels, and wellness retreats are yet to be overrun by them.

Additionally, the most popular location for tourists staying in Palawan is the small town of El Nido, which attracted nearly 300,000 for the first semester, nearly 4/10 of the overall arrivals.

In second place, Puerto Princesa, the regional capital, logs 269,090, followed by Coron and its 75,756 guests, San Vincente’s 52,057, and finally, Linapacan with 16,654.

Leading the way among the destinations in Palawan is the town of El Nido, attracting the most number of visitors at 294,065, accounting for a 38.39% share of the total tourist arrivals in the province.

All of the destinations above are well-known for their proximity to nature, proving yet again those vacationing in Palawan are actively searching for nature-based activities.

The World’s Most Desirable Island

Last year, Palawan was crowned the ‘Most Desirable Island’ in the Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards, as voted by the public, as well as named the ‘Most Preferred Destination’ within the Philippines by locals, in a survey carried out by PUBLiCUS Asia, Inc.

Provincial Tourism Offer Maribel Buñi is recorded stating, ‘this calls for more proactive initiatives and measures to ensure that we provide excellent service and offer quality tourism products for our visitors to have a memorable experience while they are on our island.’

As Buñi noted, the goal is not only to increase the number of arrivals but also to promote longer stays and ‘bigger spending’.

Could we expect this Filipino oasis to follow in the footsteps of Bali and launch its very own Long-Stay Visa in the near future?

That is yet to be seen, but we surely would not be surprised.

Travelers from all over the world are flocking to a fully open Asia for longer, multi-country trips this year.

U.S. travelers in particular are looking east this year. According to data from travel app Hopper, all three of this past summer’s top trending destinations among U.S. tourists were Asian cultural capitals.

Seoul, South Korea is a major destination leading this trend. In fact, Seoul is the 11th most popular city in the world for international tourists, according to Mastercard’s Global Destinations Cities Index.

The number of tourists to South Korea quadrupled at the beginning of this year, with a total of 4.4 million visitors to the country as of this June. According to experts, that number is expected to double by the end of the year.

So, why is the South Korean capital more popular now than ever before?

Here are four reasons why Seoul is now one of the most popular destinations in the world:

Trendy Revival of Seochon Neighborhood

The 500-year-old neighborhood of Seochon has changed a lot since its heyday in the Joseon era.

Today, the historical neighborhood has been restored and revived, creating an irresistible mix of authenticity and modernity.

An infusion of trendy new businesses and an influx of young creative Koreans has breathed new life into Seochon over the last few years. Narrow curving alleyways lined with traditional Korean homes (hanok) of polished dark wood and white stone give way to creative shops and popular corner cafes.

Tourists are drawn to the authentic atmosphere of the village. Local food stall owner Jo Gyeonghwan told CNA Luxury, “If you explore the alleys, you can see renovated hanok-style cafes and restaurants which cannot be easily found in other areas.”

Recently restored homestays are marketed to travelers looking for a unique traditional experience in a vibrant area. Architect Park Jung Hyun has been remodeling these homes for many years. This year, more travelers than ever before are choosing their destinations based on their favorite TV series and movies in a red-hot travel trend known as “set-jetting.”

XO, Kitty, a spin-off of the record-breaking American Netflix series To All The Boys, recently held the #3 slot in Netflix’s top 10 rankings and generated a cult-like fan following. A first of its kind, the series draws key inspiration from popular K-dramas while keeping things accessible in an English language format. The series is set almost entirely in Seoul and features a few of the city’s famous landmarks.

Fans of the uber-popular series are flocking from the U.S., Europe, and beyond to the South Korean capital to see where some of its most epic scenes were filmed. The most iconic spots from the series include the love locks at the N Seoul Tower and the Grand Hyatt Seoul.

According to the New York Times, 60% of global Netflix users have watched a Korean-language TV show or film. (Earlier this year, Extraordinary Attorney Woo – an inspirational series about an autistic lawyer– skyrocketed into Netflix’s top 10 in over 50 countries.)

Data from Expedia shows that two-thirds of travelers have considered taking a trip based on their favorite shows. With the wildfire of international fandom of Korean series and movies, the set-jetting trend will probably continue to lean in Seoul’s favor.

Tik Tok Tourism and Gen Z Trends

Yep, it’s another TikTok sensation driving a tourism boom.

‘Personal Color Analysis’ is the latest craze – and it’s got travelers running right to Seoul. In a 60-minute consultation, experts figure out what colors of clothes, makeup, accessories, and hair are most flattering to your skin tone.

According to TIME, the topic “personal color analysis Korea” has 375 million TikTok views.

While the service has been around for decades for public figures, the Korean beauty industry has been leading the charge in making it accessible to everyday people.

Like many other beauty and cosmetic services, personal color analysis prices in Seoul are up to 70% lower than in other major cities like New York or L.A., making it a motivating factor for international tourism.

In fact, so many tourists are coming to Seoul for this service that the Korean Tourism Organization set up a pop-up color analysis studio in New York’s Rockefeller Center this summer. Unsurprisingly, it was a massive hit – especially among Gen Z.

New Direct Flights

Today, it’s easier than ever to fly to the South Korean capital. While Seoul’s Incheon Airport has long been a key international flight hub, it’s seeing a surge in new routes from all over the world these days.

United Airlines increased their flights from San Francisco to Seoul by 70% earlier this year, while Virgin Atlantic teased new routes for next year.

Some budget airlines are promising prices 20% lower than full-service carriers like Korean Air and Asiana, making Seoul more accessible to travelers on a lower budget. Low-cost carrier Air Premia also launched a new route from Newark to Seoul this past May, while Northern Pacific Airlines plans to offer more affordable flights to Seoul and other Asian destinations via Alaska by the end of this year.

In Europe, Prague Airport launched new direct flights to Seoul at the start of the summer season. In Australia, Jetstar also launched a long-awaited service from Sydney to Seoul a few months ago. Asian destinations like Vietnam, Japan, and Singapore also added new routes from both full-service and low-cost carriers.

As airlines all over the world scramble to meet increased demand for flights to Seoul, it’s safe to say we’re not the only ones seeing this Asian capital’s popularity skyrocket!

Further down the Mediterranean coast, other popular resort spots include the smaller cities of Bodrum and Marmaris, where tourists can both bask under the scorching sun and marvel at Hellenic ruins that rival Greece’s in beauty.

This means you should expect to pay, on average, $5.08 for a meal at a cheap eatery in the trendy Konyaalti district of Antalya, and only $22.16 for a three-course meal in a mid-range restaurant. For comparison, a cheap meal in Nice costs roughly $20.74.

It’s no surprise holiday bookings for Turkiye are skyrocketing, as reported by British travel company On the Beach.

Britain is one of Turkiye’s most valuable markets, up there with Germany and the United States, and as many as 1.2 million seats on flights originating from the U.K. have been added this year.

In July alone, as many as 73,000 British holidaymakers flew to Turkiye, with Antalya consistently ranking as the most popular coastal destination for On the Beach customers.

Southern Spain and France’s Cote d’Azur may be Europe’s most sought-after fall destinations, as they are both Mediterranean regions enjoying long, hot summers, and balmy autumns, but despite their undeniable charm, they don’t stand a chance against Turkiye – especially now that new nonstop flights to Istanbul have launched.

Most bars and restaurants, especially those located in touristy areas, boast a long history and evident experience with tourists from all over the world, so communication shouldn’t be an issue.

As far as safety goes, Poland, in general, is considered a safe country, even being named one of the best European countries for solo female travelers.

Vibrant Nightlife

The Polish take their nightlife seriously, and the people of Krakow are no exception.

The city is filled to the brim with clubs, bars, and pubs that stay open until the early hours of the morning.
