4. Athens

2. Valencia

It totals 3,400 annual Google clicks, and that should come as no surprise, taking into account its affordability and amazing weather: meals in casual restaurants in downtown Valencia cost roughly USD USD $13, and the city enjoys over 300 days of sun per year.

It seems Spain is a leader in budget beach breaks, tallying yet another entry on this list, and the top-rated destination at that: Benidorm.

Whether it’s the Aqualandia water park, the flavorful cuisine, or the numerous beaches lining the wider White Coast, it is a favorite among youngsters and families alike.

Temperatures reach a pleasant 77 degrees on average in summer, while the price of food and accommodation is perhaps the lowest in Spain. A double room for one night in August costs only USD $141; as for a meal and a beer at non-expensive restaurants, USD $14.

The full Bounce list mentions beach destinations further away, such as Porto, in Portugal, one of the trendiest city breaks in Europe right now, and Faro, also in Portugal, but as this country does not straddle the Mediterranean coast, bounded by the Atlantic instead, it was not included here.

According to a new report from travel company Kayak, these are the six cheapest destinations in Europe.

Many are in Eastern Europe, which is usually considered the cheapest area in Europe to travel and spend time. But you may be surprised to discover that two of the destinations are in the heart of popular Spain.

There’s so much for budget travelers to enjoy.

Here is the full list:

Galicia, Spain

Located in the northwest of Spain, along the Atlantic coast, Galicia has all the charm of the country’s more popular destinations such as Andalusia and the Costa Brava, but on a more attractive budget.

With a population of over 2.5 million, Galicia is a vast region famous for its wild beaches, lighthouses, and verdant green landscapes.

Coffee and beer prices are similar to those found in wider Spain in the 1990s, and the region is famous for its abundant seafood, which travels quickly from net to plate.

Galicia boasts a rich cultural heritage. Visitors can enjoy free or low-cost days out to attractions such as the Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela and Muralla Romana de Lugo.

During the summer months the beaches are bustling with people, but not uncomfortably overcrowded in the way you might find in Southern Spain.

Turunc, Turkey

Turunc is just 20km south of the popular tourist resort of Marmaris. It is a small coastal area with a population of less than 2,000. The village itself is just 1km in size, meaning you can walk from one end to the other in less than 30 minutes.

Whether you’re looking for quaint villages with an authentic Spanish feel, beaches to enjoy watersports such as kayaking and snorkeling, or a vibrant dynamic nightlife, you’ll find both in and around Mallorca.

According to the report conducted by Kayak, the average visitor to Palma will spend just $44 a day on food and drink.

Saranda, Albania

In the heart of the lesser-known Albanian Riviera, Saranda is a beautiful and picturesque seaside resort that was once a sleepy fishing village.

Saranda boasts a favorable climate with an incredible 300 days of sunshine each year. Its location close to Corfu means you will find plenty of Greek influences here in the architecture, the attitudes and the food.

The main attraction for visitors here is the white sand beach, but if you’re looking to explore beyond the sun and sand, you could also visit Lekuresi Castle, which is in the area. Entrance to the castle is free, which is ideal for travelers on a budget.

A decent meal in Saranda will cost visitors just $6.

Skopje, North Macedonia

While North Macedonia may not be your first pick when thinking of European vacation destinations, this country is rapidly growing in popularity.

Skopje is the capital city of Macedonia, and it boasts a huge number of archeological sites and historic attractions.

Budget travelers looking for free activities in the city can head to the memorial house of Mother Teresa, who was born in the city, or explore Fortress Kale.

North Macedonia is widely considered to be the cheapest country in Europe, meaning that your money will go further here.

Dinner for two will cost just $18, while you can expect to pay $1.50 for a beer.

Peak summer travel season is just weeks away, and tourists are beginning to get excited about the epic trips they have planned.

With more tourists than ever expected to travel abroad this year, and most trips already booked, we now have access to new data showing this year’s travel trends.

A new report from travel insurance company Squaremouth breaks down info on the destinations, expenses, and demographics for travel in summer 2023.

Higher Average Trip Costs

According to Squaremouth’s report, which analyzed data from thousands of travel insurance policies that were purchased for this summer, travelers are spending more.

For the third year in a row, travel costs have increased, making summer 2023 the most expensive year to date.

On average, travelers are spending $9,333 on trips this summer. That price is nearly 7% higher than in 2022 and 27% higher than 2021’s costs.

Boomers Are Back

In 2021 when Covid was more prevalent and older people were at a higher risk of health complications, baby boomers only made up 29% of Squaremouth’s travelers.

Last year that increased to 33%, and now it has risen to 40%. The percentage of Gen Xers traveling this summer is second highest at 22%, followed by Gen Z at 15% and Millennials at just 12%.

However, it is important to note that the data is based on information gathered from people who have purchased travel insurance policies from Squaremouth. So while it is generally interesting information, it is only one piece of the puzzle.

Are millennials traveling less? Not necessarily – they could be purchasing insurance from other companies or not buying it at all.

Additionally, a higher percentage of baby boomers traveling does not mean that fewer younger generations are packing their bags; it simply means that the proportion of boomers has increased at a higher rate.

Travelers Are Headed Abroad

A whopping 76% of Squaremouth customers are headed abroad this summer. One region, in particular, accounted for 42% of all travel insurance sales – Europe. In fact, 8 of the top 10 international destinations are in Europe.

So where are all these travelers headed? By breaking down the percentage of travel insurance policy sales by destination, Squaremouth has reported the 10 most popular international destinations.

10. Norway

Stunning Norway is the 10^th most popular international destination, with 2.2% of travelers headed to the Scandinavian Adventureland.

With dramatic scenery, terrific cultural festivals, and some of the best places to view the Northern Lights, Norway is becoming more and more popular with American tourists.

9. Ireland

A long-time favorite destination for U.S. tourists, Ireland frequently receives accolades for its multitude of travel opportunities.

Be it the ease of traveling in an English-speaking country, the cozy pubs, or the dramatic Atlantic coastline, Ireland is a great destination for balancing fun nights out with adventure.

8. Germany

Germany is a constant favorite for travelers. Its cities are packed with history, and thanks to an efficient train network, it is possible to visit multiple cities in one trip.

Train travel is so popular in Germany that this summer, the government is introducing passes for unlimited rail travel for just $52 per month!

7. Iceland

In recent years, travel to Iceland has increased considerably. The otherworldly landscapes present throughout the country attract visitors looking for a nontraditional vacation.

This summer is expected to be one of the busiest and most expensive travel seasons yet.

According to airfare booking platform Hopper, the cost of a flight to Europe is currently up more than 35% compared to the same time last year.

The average cost for a flight from the U.S. to Europe is currently $1,032.

Domestic flights within the U.S. remain the most affordable option for American travelers. According to Hopper, the average round-trip domestic flight is $286, which is actually a 15% decrease from last summer.

From city breaks to national parks, there’s plenty to explore in the U.S. during the summer. So if you’re looking for an affordable vacation this summer, consider roaming closer to home.
