Cancun is the number one resort destination for U.S. vacationers, and it’s easy to see why:

Hotels are nothing short of spectacular, boasting top-notch amenities and offering world-class service.

The beaches are stunning, and they feel very Americanized and tourist-friendly for those who might feel some agitation about traveling to a foreign country.

On the downside, with its infamous entertainment scene, with rows upon rows of beach clubs and night venues operating until the wee hours, and a main avenue that is always chock-a-block with visitors, it can get overwhelming at times, even if you’re barricading yourself in a five-star.

Sometimes you just want to escape the bustling resort city and take in the tropical atmosphere of the Mexican Caribbean without having to share it with hundreds, if not thousands of fellow travelers, and as per usual, we’ve got you covered:

Here are 3 incredible lesser-known spots south of Cancun you can hit up for smaller crowds, if any at all, and both unspoiled beaches and culture:

Lake Bacalar

We know the Mexican Caribbean is best known for its scenic, palm-lined beaches and highly-developed coastal cities, but what if we told you don’t need to stay by the oceanfront to get those tropical vibes, nor swim in the purest, bluest of waters?

An elongated 18-mile-long lake separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land, Bacalar is a hidden gem that is growing increasingly popular on TikTok lately, thanks to its multiple shades of blue – it is officially known as the ‘lake of seven colors’ – and serene nature.

Unless you’re a fan of salt water, there is absolutely no reason to prefer a Caribbean beach over Bacalar.

The banks are also sandy, with plenty of ‘beaches’ and swimming spots to pick from, there are no waves or marine creatures lurking beneath, and the teal hue on the water is similar, if not brighter.

From bathing in the natural shallow pools to kayaking adventures along the lake’s extension or sailing tours to the deepest parts, there are plenty of water-based activities to choose from.

What’s best, despite being more famous now, Bacalar is still remarkably peaceful.

Mahahual

Alright, alright, we know the Caribbean is the main reason why you’re going south of the border anyways, and lounging by the white sands as you bask in the sun is probably the number one priority on the list: well, how about doing just that on unruffled white sands?

The small town of Mahahual was once a quaint fishing village, though it is rapidly becoming a leisure destination for Cancun escapees like you.

The beaches are wilder, and insidious American-led gentrification has yet to seep into the community, and the native culture feels its strongest here.

Relax by the palm shades at the municipal beach, sip a coconut, eat a traditional Mayan dish in a local restaurant, and spend your day at peace.

There are very few, if any, street vendors flogging their usual trinkets, less screaming from children, and no thumping music coming from beach bars nearby.

The town is best known for its quaintness, grass-thatched palapas, and fast-growing hospitality sector, with many hotels and restaurants having opened in the last decade.

It is also a short one-hour drive from Bacalar, which means you can definitely see them both in a day if you’re coming in a car.

Dzibanche and Kohulich

Who said Southern Quintana Roo didn’t have its fair share of ancient Mayan sites?

Due to its proximity to Central America, where Mayan civilization was centered, it has an even higher concentration of historical ruins.

There’s no denying the North is a more popular destination for archaeological zones, as it is home to Chichen Itza, the number one such attraction in Mexico, but if it’s the overgrown, ‘unlisted’ Mayan ruins that make your heart beat faster, then this is where you should be headed:

Kohunlich and Dzibanché are located an hour south of Bacalar, and they’re some of the most authentic and photogenic Mayan ruins you’ll see, with pyramids that are surrounded by lush vegetation, pathways that have been left essentially as they were, and intricate carvings on walls.

The easiest way to get there is by booking a tour from Bacalar or Chetumal, the largest towns in the region, and it costs $85 and $70 Mexican pesos to enter Kohunlich and Dzibanché, respectively, or around $4.96 and $4 to enter.

Far cheaper than other overtouristed Mayan sites, but just as beautiful.

According to the Cancun Sun, the area around Bacalar is one of the best for avoiding the Mexican Caribbean crowds, as the region’s 20+ million tourists typically stay within the resort zones in Cancun, or at best, take day trips out to hotspots in the immediate vicinity.

Soon enough, tourists landing in either Cancun or Tulum will be able to travel on the Mayan Train all the way down to Chetumal, the capital of Quintana Roo.

Hopping off there, they’ll find plenty of bus connections, day tours, or private transfer options to Bacalar, Mahahual, and the Mayan ruins.

Culture-based trips are surging in popularity in 2024, and that’s particularly true among American travelers, who in their vast majority, travel abroad specifically to get out of their comfort and expose themselves to completely different environments.

From a colorful Latin America, to deeply-historical Europe, to mystical Asia, there is a whole mapa mundis of options to pick from, and if you’re looking to get inspired, Tripadvisor‘s latest compilation of bucket-list cultural destinations might be a good place to start.

To our fellow culture buffs out there, these are the top five spots to visit in 2024:

Athens, Greece

Fifth on the list, Athens is capital of Greece and a sprawling metropolis with a History spanning over 3,400 years. Cradle of Western civilization, the birthplace of democracy, and the proud home of the ancient Parthenon, it is easily one of the world’s most culturally-charged cities.

Without question, the most striking feature and main point of interest in Athens is Acropolis Hill, atop which sits the Parthenon itself and a number of other temples that have stood the test of time, offering a glimpse into civil and religious life in Ancient Greece.

The only Asian destination to make the list, Agra is a medium-size Indian hub – by Indian standards – lining the banks of the Yamuna river, and boasting a high concentration of landmarks, from the iconic Taj Mahal to the ornate Akbar Tomb to the sandstone Agra Fort.

Spring is a time when most travelers stay put and try to save for that long-awaited summer getaway, but if you’re looking to get the best bang for your buck on your upcoming vacation, the first thing you need to do is to rethink your schedule.

Visiting some of the world’s top beach destinations smack dab in the middle of summer is far from ideal since the timing guarantees that you’ll be dealing with sky-high prices and insufferable crowds.

That’s why Kayak’s “Best Time To Travel” tool, an algorithm based on the latest data surrounding destination prices, weather, and traveler numbers, suggests that several amazing warm destinations are best visited in the spring.

For example, if you’re thinking about going to Hawaii, Phuket, or Cartagena this summer, what you’re about to read might convince you to take that vacation a bit earlier than planned.

Hawaii

Those who want to keep their travel domestic this spring can’t go wrong with Hawaii, where the paradisic weather and movie-like beaches are bound to get you officially out of that wintery mindset.

These upcoming months, return tickets to Hawaii will start at just over $110, giving all travelers, no matter their budget, a chance to hike along the lush trails, snorkel on the crystal-clear waters, or simply lounge around the soft-sanded shores of the 50th state.

Hotel prices in Honolulu, Hawaii’s beating heart, will hover a little over $200 a night, and remember, most of these places are all-inclusive resorts where several meals are included in the upfront fee.

However, I do want to note that scheduling your trip a bit later on in spring might be a smart choice, at least if you want to avoid peak-season crowds.

According to Kayak’s data, December and March are the most popular months in the state, so those looking to enjoy a peaceful, relaxing experience will want to plan their trip in April or May instead.

And I’m not even getting into how dreamy the weather gets this time of year, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the mid-80s (24-29°C).

Phuket

Are you itching to go somewhere warm and remote this spring? Phuket might just be the place for you.

From March through May, the Thai gem offers everything you could wish for and more, from great prices to fantastic sightseeing opportunities.

Plane tickets to Phuket reach their annual low in March, when a round-trip will cost roughly $859.

In comparison, the same exact ticket would set you back $1322 if you were to schedule your trip in July, marking a remarkable $463 difference – money that would be much better spent toward fun experiences or better accommodation options.

While airfare to Phuket will be steep no matter the time of year, the good news is you can save quite a bit on accommodation instead.

Stays in the city during April and May have an average daily rate of $37, but depending on the neighborhood, it can go as low as $21 a night—that’s less than what most of us are paying for a fast-food meal!

Now that the holiday season has officially passed, you can explore the region’s gorgeous beaches and cultural attractions crowd-free while enjoying the sweet 82°F (28°C) weather.

Cartagena

While the Caribbean coast of Colombia offers the type of picture-perfect views that can be enjoyed all year long, April is hands-down the best month you can choose for your Cartagena getaway.

That’s when the winter crowds have subdued and local beaches enjoy what you’d consider the ideal sunbathing weather – with temperatures that range from 75°F to 88°F (24-31°C).

Value-seeking travelers will be delighted to learn that flight and accommodation prices are at their lowest, too – airfare will cost you around $195, while hotels and short-term rentals have daily rates that rarely go over $75.

So, if you’ve been dreaming about strolling through Cartagena’s cobbled streets, exploring its Old Town, and seeing the iconic Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, scheduling your visit this spring will guarantee that you get the best bang for your buck.

It is teeming with tourists year-round, particularly Brits and Northern Europeans, and for a resort zone as lively and well-frequented, you’d assume prices would reflect the soaring demand.

That’s not necessarily the case, as tourists spend an average $1,305 for one week in Albufeira: the Velamar Boutique Hotel costs only $75 to book per night, while staying overnight at the adults-only Hotel California Urban Beach will set you back by an acceptable $132.

Naturally, you can go the all-inclusive resort or upscale restaurant route—there are plenty of those in Albufeira if you’re keen on splurging—but if you’re after a budget-friendly beach getaway, you will definitely find it here if you’re fine not getting pampered 24/7.

Porto Santo

We’ve all heard of Madeira at this point, the ‘Hawaii of Europe‘, but very little is said of its Maldives-like sister, the neighboring, much smaller Porto Santo, part of the same archipelago, where beaches are sandy instead of pebbly and the ocean’s a turquoise-blue.

Porto Santo is a natural oasis in the Atlantic, famous for its translucent waters, which rival the Indian Ocean in beauty, dramatic arid landscapes, year-round balmy weather due to its proximity to the African continent, and laid-back atmosphere.

While Madeira has become a globalized island, being home to multiple nationalities and hosting nonstop flights from America, Porto Santo is a lot more isolated, being served by a limited number of intra-Europe flights and Madeira ferries.

It’s somewhere you go for unwinding and soaking up nature, and for a destination as exclusive as this, you may be surprised to learn that you can find dormitory beds for as cheap as $29, only 450 meters from the beach, and double rooms in three-star hotels for a very reasonable $93.

The average hotel cost for a one-week stay in Porto Santo comes in at an affordable $744.

It’s not exactly cheap by Portuguese standards, but considering the complete lack of tourist crowds, the quality of the beaches, and the unlimited access to the wild nature, it’s a fair trade off.

Braga

Back to the Portuguese mainland, miles away from the resort-packed coast and the sunny islands, Braga is a historic city in the far north of the country, only reachable by train and best known for its religious importance and medieval heritage.

An imposing cathedral dominates the cobbled Old Town, and its adjacent Sacred Art Museum and landmark Kings’ Chapel, distinguished for being a textbook example of Gothic architecture, is sure to captivate history buffs.

Other attractions include well-preserved ancient walls, a neoclassical church perched atop a cascading stairway, possibly the most photographed in Portugal, and the lush Santa Barbara Garden, with its flower arrangements, and the nearby, monumental Archbishop’s Palace.

Fortunately for the culture-seekers, Braga is pretty affordable for a historically-charged city break of its status, with week-long stays setting travelers back $786 or a remarkably cheap $380 if you’re staying in shared dorms and eating in inexpensive local pastelarias.

Porto

The capital of Northern Portugal, the city of Porto has wooed passersby for years now, with its UNESCO-listed Historic Center, centuries-old tradition of wine-making, and fast-flowing Douro River, cutting through its very heart, providing an endless source of fascination.

Among some of the main Portenho landmarks, Clerigos Tower is perhaps the most noticeable one, rising above the maze of terracotta roofs below, though the iconic Dom Luis I Bridge, Lello Library, known to have inspired the Harry Potter saga, and the cathedral are not to be missed, either.

It is the only other Portuguese city that can stand up to Lisbon: it has Baroque churches that are just as ornate, a History that is just as ancient, and an equally vibrant multicultural scene.

With all the value it offers, the $59 you’ll spend per day visiting Porto on a budget sound like an absolute bargain.

From traditional Portuguese pastries costing less than a dollar to satisfying $16 lunch menus including a starter or dessert and a main dish, exploring the hilly, colorful Porto and the wider, vineyard-dotted Douro Valley will hardly break the bank.

However, Poland should absolutely be on your list of places to travel.

I visited for the first time this past December and was blown away by how gorgeous Poland was (especially around the holidays when the cities are transformed with lights, decorations, and festive Christmas markets!)

There’s so much to discover in Poland, with tons of charming cities like Krakow, Wroclaw, and Gdansk. Poland is also incredibly affordable and extremely safe.

2. El Salvador

Being a very small country, El Salvador often takes a backseat to the other power players in Central America, such as Costa Rica and Guatemala.

But you really shouldn’t skip El Salvador.

The country has worked hard to become a safe, beautiful, and welcoming destination for travelers.

From the great surfing beaches on the Pacific coast to the country’s natural wonders like Coatepeque Lake and Santa Ana Volcano, El Salvador is worth a trip in 2024.

Its small size also makes it perfect for a week-long getaway.

3. Georgia

The country of Georgia is another one of the most underrated travel destinations to check out this year.

Although it remains under the radar for most travelers, it’s only a matter of time before this country in the Caucasus explodes in popularity.

Georgia has a cool capital city, Tbilisi, and tons of amazing natural beauty.

I visited Bolivia in 2023 and was surprised and amazed by how much I enjoyed my time there.

This is the ultimate destination for adventure junkies, with bucket list experiences like cycling the infamous Death Road, off-roading on the Uyuni Salt Flats, exploring the Witches’ Market in La Paz, and more.

7. Cyprus

Finally, Cyprus is one of the best underrated destinations for travelers.

Geographically located in the Middle East but part of the EU and more culturally European, Cyprus is a small island in the Mediterranean that is currently trending.

Although it’s slowly growing in popularity as more travelers discover the country’s beautiful beaches and year-round warmer weather, Cyprus still remains an underrated destination.

Why This Country Of 227 Islands Will Be One Of The Top European Destinations This Summer

With a recorded history spanning at least three millennia, a world-renowned cuisine, and a whopping 227 paradisaical islands to its name, Greece is up there with Italy, Spain and Türkiye as one of the top destinations in the Mediterranean, having hosted 32.7 million tourists last year alone.

In 2024, arrival figures are expected to soar further even, with the local tourism sector having now fully recovered from the crisis, and demand at an all-time high, surpassing 2019 levels.

Based on the available data, it’s safe to say it could break tourism records this summer.

Still, you may be wondering what are some of the not-so-obvious things about Greece that have got travelers hooked in the first place (other than, of course, it lays claim to Europe’s party capital):

Islands, Islands And More Islands

As we have mentioned already, Greece encompasses 227 islands, excluding the smaller, uninhabited islets, and to reduce them to the usual Instagrammer-friendly live sets of bougainvillea-filled alleys and overtouristed towns is a gross mistake you don’t want to make.

The Aegean archipelagos are more diverse than they get credit for, and though the above description certainly applies to Santorini, Mykonos and the like, where overdevelopment and celeb-frequented beach clubs have all but obliterated the native charm, there are countless quieter spots you can escape to.

From hilly Folegandros, where cobbled towns sit atop tall cliffs overlooking azure waters, to offbeat Anafi, with its golden sand beaches and traditional blue domes, to an unspoiled Patmos, where a monumental medieval fortress towers over an ancient chóra, Greece will steal your heart like it did ours.

It’s Easy To Get Around

Seeing it administers a massive coastline and hundreds of islands, some so far away from the mainland their closest neighbors are, in fact, Middle Eastern countries like Türkiye, you would expect it to be trickier to get around or island-hop in Greece, but that’s not the case at all.

All island destinations are served by either intra-European or domestic flights from larger hubs or week-round ferry connections: From Piraeus, the main Athenian port, you can travel anywhere in the Aegean Sea, with comfortable overnight ferries linking the capital to islands as far East as the Dodecanese.

Traveling within Greece is also surprisingly affordable.

Fares for a sleeping cabin in commercial ferries traveling from Athens to Mykonos average $41, from Athens to Kos $67, or from Athens to Crete starting from only $34 when booked in advance with Minoan or Anek Lines.

Don’t Underestimate The Greek Mainland

The quaint collective of Greek islands is indisputably the main reason why tourists will be flocking to the Southeastern European gem this summer, but they shouldn’t be in a hurry to leave the mainland for the earliest Santorini-bound ferry.

Continental Greece is famous for its cosmopolitan cities, with Athens and Thessaloniki to name a couple, natural and manmade wonders, including the Meteora Monasteries, resting on vertiginous free-standing pillars of rock, and scenic train journeys traversing a verdant Peloponnese nature.

Athens’ restaurant-lined Plaka district, bustling street bazaars and UNESCO-listed Parthenon are just as quintessential Greece as whitewashed churches and blue domes, and trust us, you don’t want to leave Greece without paying a visit to Delphi, formerly seat of The Oracle in Ancient Times.

Greece Has Better Weather On Average Compared To Other European Countries

As one of Europe’s Southernmost states, boasting year-round warmer temperatures, particularly in the Aegean archipelagos, it goes without saying Greek weather is as much an incentive for tourists to come as is the fascinating culture and postcard islands.

It enjoys an unusually-long high season, starting as early as April, when seas begin getting warmer, clouds dissipate, and those blood-orange spring sunsets make a triumphant return to the Cyclades, and that perfect ‘Greek island weather’ extends well into late October.

July and August are the hottest months to visit, but for most of the year, Greece is surprisingly pleasant to visit, if not for swimming, then for sunbathing.

It’s still only March, and islands like Crete, Rhodes and Karphatos are already recording temperatures as high as 66.2°F.

Greece Can Be More Affordable Than You Think

Members of the Mykonos white-on-white cult will beg to differ, but a one-week trip to Greece does not have to set you back by thousands of dollars unless you’re actively looking to splurge on a cave suite with your own private lagoon or eat in fancy restaurants every night.

Food in Greece is actually quite affordable by European standards, owing to its varied selection of locally sourced fresh vegetables, tropical fruit, and dairy products.

Eating as cheap as $13 shouldn’t be an issue in mainland cities or even larger islands like Corfu and Crete.

Naturally, touristy islands packed with seaside resorts tend to be pricier than average – a simple moussaka dinner in Santorini can cost a shocking $22, versus $9 in Athenian restaurants – but in opting for the round-the-corner, ten-dollar gyros every now and then, you can cut down costs significantly.

Overall, accommodation in Greece is not as expensive as you might think, either.

The average price for a one-week stay is an acceptable $603 – once again, we’re talking mid-range, not remarkable all-inclusive villa stays.

7 Nonstop Flights From The U.S.

The final reason for Greece’s surging popularity this year is the improved connectivity with the United States, which is set to increase demand among Americans and help them realize their wildest Mamma Mia-inspired fantasies without long stopovers in third countries.

There are still no Transatlantic flights from the U.S. to any Greek island – airports are far too small, and in most cases, they even lack airports altogether – so you can’t head straight to Santorini from New York, but you can easily find nonstop flights to Athens.

Athens International is hosting commercial flights from as many as 7 U.S. hubs this summer, including JFK, Newark, D.C., Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and Atlanta.

Once they get to Athens, travelers can connect to domestic flights, or hop on a ferry to reach the islands.
