With millions of Americans looking to travel to celebrate Independence Day (4 July) – in the coming week or so – these are the most popular domestic destinations for U.S. travelers.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) has recently predicted that as many as 47.9 million people will travel during this year’s 4th July long weekend – with the vast majority of travelers (42 million) opting to travel to their holiday destination by road, even with the ever-increasing price of gas.

They also revealed which cities are set to be the most popular for Americans looking to book a short vacation in their own country – and so let’s find out which domestic destinations these are.

The city that is proving to be the second-most popular destination for Americans looking to celebrate Independence Day away from their home is the largest city in Washington State, Seattle.

Traveling Internationally This Summer May Be Cheaper Than Domestic Trips

A recent study has revealed that jetting off on an international trip this summer could actually be cheaper than heading away on a domestic vacation. The study is bound to come as a big surprise for travelers, having heard for several months about how expensive flight tickets and hotel stays are at present – but it could well have travelers scrambling to find their passports and book a trip overseas for the coming few months.

Having been made possible by a range of different factors, the study shows that an affordable international vacation isn’t just a thing of the past like many think it is right now, but a feature of travel today as well. Here’s which destinations the study claims American travelers can save money by visiting this summer – plus a look at which other international destinations represent good value for money at present.

    International Travel Not Always Extortionate

Despite frequent news stories telling travelers otherwise, international travel doesn’t have to break the bank – or at least that’s what a recent travel study is telling us. A study carried out by the travel booking platform Hopper found that several top destinations for American travelers could be well within budget – and, in many cases, even cheaper than going on a domestic staycation.

The reason why? The strength of the dollar compared to other currencies. Today, one US dollar can purchase ~0.94 Euros, making it one of the few occasions that the two currencies have almost reached parity – all whilst flights and hotel in the US are rising in price. In layman’s terms, that means a traveler’s budget in Europe will stretch 15% further than last summer and 6% further than at this time in 2019 thanks to the strength of the dollar – which will more than help offset the expensive air fare.

The survey also reveals that whilst flight tickets have generally risen across the board, that isn’t the case for every destination. Despite a general increase of almost 15% for international flights and more than 30% for domestic air travel compared to 2019, there are some destinations in Europe that have actually seen their ticket prices fall over the past few years.

Airfare to Portugal has fallen by 11% compared to 2019, with tickets to Croatia also falling 8.4% over the same period. Other countries, such as Ireland and Greece will cost more or less the same they paid for back in 2019, with airfare increases below 1%. Outside of the EU, key countries to target for cheap vacations include Chile, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, where both flight prices have fallen and the dollar is performing well against the local currency.

Despite low overall price rises, travel to Europe can still be expensive for travelers. Flights to Mexico and the Caribbean are cheaper, and have also seen a much lower rise in airfare prices compared to domestic flights and flights to Europe, meaning that trips to top destinations such as Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are even more attractive now than they were before.

The study also offered some general money saving tips both before and during a vacation. These included ordering currency from a bank before a trip to get the best exchange rate and, when abroad, paying in the local currency where possible to get the best exchange rate and price. Travel abroad may still cost a penny – but it may now cost less than you were previously expecting.

A recent study has revealed the top domestic destinations in the US for travelers to visit this coming summer. With the cost of both international air travel and hotel bookings abroad reaching expensive new highs over the past few weeks, domestic travel around the US is the perfect way to enjoy a great trip without having to worry too much about how to afford it – and there’s still so much that destinations at home have to offer travelers.

Whether heading to big cities or charming towns, or to breaks by the beach or in the country, travelers in the US are blessed to have so many options on their doorsteps – and so many different ways of reaching them. Here’s a look at which destinations made the cut to be crowned some of the top options for travelers this summer, plus a closer look into how the list was curated.

Top Domestic Destinations – Information For Travelers

The study into which domestic destinations are the best for US travelers this summer was conducted by the personal finance company WalletHub. The company developed a ranking system that took into account a range of different metrics such as travel costs, the attractions a destination has to offer, what the weather will be like, the safety of the destination and how expensive it is.

The study was wide-ranging in its scope, with a  total of 100 of the largest metro areas in the US being assessed across the 43 different metrics in order to determine which destination is the top one for travelers this summer. Once the study was complete, it was the metropolitan area of Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford in Florida that came out in first place – just one of several destinations in Florida to feature in the top 20 of the list.

Orlando took the top spot with a score of 69.97 according to WalletHub’s index. The city’s impressive range of activities – notably Disney World and Universal Studios – saw it take top spot when ranked on activities alone, whilst it also performed strongly in the safety and attractions metric. Other Florida destinations that performed well included Tampa in third place, Miami-Fort Lauderdale in 11th and Jacksonville in 14th spot.

For travelers looking to save on travel expenses, Santa Rosa in California was judged to be the destination with the lowest costs and fewest hassles, with Cincinnati, Ohio and Minneapolis, Minnesota close behind. In terms of saving money when you get there, McCallen, Texas was found to be the cheapest destination, with Tulsa, Oklahoma and Augusta, Georgia the second and third cheapest respectively.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was Honolulu that came top when it came to the best weather – making it the perfect destination for travelers looking for a beach getaway. The survey found that Chicago was the top destination in terms of attractions, with Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, and San Francisco also cited as cities with a lot to offer, making them ideal spots for those who like to get out and about and seize the day on their vacations.

CDC Urges All Travelers To Get Tested Before Domestic Or International Flights

Vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers are now encouraged to get tested before and after domestic travel, and the antigen test to enter the U.S. remains mandatory

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recently made updates to its domestic travel advisories and is now urging travelers to take a COVID-19 test prior to domestic travel.

The new update has raised alarms since the test was currently only advised for international travel and for travelers without vaccinations or incomplete schemes, but now the agency recommends it to vaccinated travelers too. The statement also suggests a period of time for the test: “Consider getting tested as close to the time of departure as possible (no more than three days) before your trip.”

The CDC also recommends travelers get tested after their domestic trip. On their website, they state that it should be considered “for current infection with a viral test if your travel involves situations with greater risk of exposure such as being in crowded places while not wearing a well-fitting mask or respirator”.

The agency has been increasing precautions as the new variant keeps spreading rapidly. A few days ago, NYC’s Commissioner of Health and Human Hygiene, Ashwin Vasan, advised all residents and tourists in New York to wear face masks “at all times”, including indoor and outdoor spaces.

For international travel, the COVID-19 test remains mandatory: “Before boarding a flight to the United States, you must show a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 1 day before travel or Documentation of Recovery from COVID-19 in the past 90 days.”

That measure hasn’t changed, despite the recent request from 260 companies to remove the test requirement. The CDC also recommends travelers get tested within a few days after arriving from international travel.

    CDC’s Travel Recommendations

Even though this year’s travel season seems to get busier than 2019, domestic and international travel haven’t completely gone “back to normal”. There are still COVID-19-related requirements and recommendations, and the CDC is constantly making updates depending on current developments.

    CDC sign

At the moment, these are the main travel advisories stated on the CDC’s official website:

    • Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines before travel.
    • Get tested no more than three days before departure and also get tested after arrival.
    • Check your destination’s COVID-19 situation and learn about specific restrictions. If the risk of getting the virus is high, the agency advises taking precautions like wearing masks, maintaining social distance, washing hands often, and monitoring daily health.
    • Face coverings are now optional but recommended. Travelers should wear masks in indoor spaces, in public transportation, and also while flying
    • When traveling by air, check if the airline requires special documentation like testing or vaccination.
    • Do not travel if you have any COVID-19 symptoms, such as fever, cough, fatigue, muscle or body aches, loss of taste or smell, headache, sore throat, or nausea.
    • Do not travel if you tested positive, if you are waiting for COVID-19 test results or if you had contact with a person with COVID-19.

From international travel, an antigen test is required to enter the US, but for domestic travel —since it is just recommended and not mandatory— travelers can take a self-test or an at-home test to get rapid results, if they so choose. US citizens can buy these tests or get them for free at covid.gov.

Female Traveler Going Through Airport Security Check

The agency has also warned about high travel risk countries—now categorized on level 3, level 4 is now only for special circumstances— and recommends travelers avoid destinations in that level. Popular countries for tourists such as Canada, France, Costa Rica, and the United Kingdom are in this category.

According to recent data shared by US health officials on Wednesday, the nation is reporting over 94,000 new infections daily, the number has increased 25% compared to last week. The CDC has also informed that hospitalizations have also been rising.

In the last year, the consumer price index for airline tickets has shot up by 25% — the largest jump since the Federal Reserve of St. Louis began tracking the index in 1989. In April alone, airfares spiked by 18.6%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Even though airline prices are soaring, Americans aren’t hesitating to break out their credit cards and book a trip. A recent Bank of America Institute survey showed spending at airlines and travel agencies is up a whopping 60% year-over-year.

An empty terminal, aircraft's are waiting and preparing for their next flight and one of them taken off

At the same time, as Americans continue to grapple with 40-year high inflation rates and resource-strapped airlines work to get more planes in the air, traveling on a budget seems to be nearly impossible.

Flight prices are pushing travelers to the breaking point

Since the beginning of the pandemic, many airlines have been drowning in debt and struggling to return to a state of profitability.

Now, with travel restrictions easing across the world and higher operating costs to deal with (like higher jet fuel prices), airlines are desperate to serve travel-deprived consumers — and for a major profit.

Airplane at the terminal gate ready for takeoff - Modern international airport during sunset - Concept of emotional travel around the world

This is extremely evident when looking at domestic airfares across the country. Many Americans are looking for domestic travel to enjoy their vacations this year but the cost of some airfares is simply out of control.

These are the top 5 most affordable U.S. airports for domestic flights

NetCredit analyzed data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics to identify the average cost of a flight from major airports around the country.

Many of us default to the biggest airports when searching for flight deals. But prices vary even between the big commercial hubs, and you can often find a cheaper or quicker option nearby.

Competition is a major factor though, with prices often cheaper at big airports with multiple airlines or rival airports nearby. Plus, airlines see some airports as hubs for business travelers who are less choosy about higher fares.

Preparation of the airplane before flight. Airport at the colorful sunset

So it does pay off to do some research. Take a look at these 5 most affordable U.S. airports for domestic flights.

    5. Punta Gorda, Florida

    Average Domestic Fare: $142.48

    4. Phoenix-Mesa Gateway, Arizona

    Average Domestic Fare: $137.61

    3. St. Pete-Clearwater Intl. , Florida

    Average Domestic Fare: $130.61

    2. Orlando Sanford Intl.

    Average Domestic Fare: $118.79

    1. Atlantic City Intl.

    Average Domestic Fare: $109.43

Atlantic City Intl is the cheapest US airport in NetCredit’s study. But Florida airports dominate the cheap list, making Florida the second-cheapest state on average.

As a tourist hotspot, Florida has more hub airports than any other state, ensuring strong inter-airline competition which is partially responsible for airfare affordability.

Be smart and book ahead to save on airline tickets

Remember the three golden rules of booking cheap flights:

    • Book ahead: 95 to 21 days in advance. This booking zone consistently yields the lowest prices for travelers (within 5% of the lowest ticket price).
    • …but check third-party discount sites for last-minute reductions if a late booking is unavoidable.
    • Be flexible – Research found that flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are cheaper than weekend bookings.

At the end of the day, flying domestically this summer can get very pricey, but if you do your research and compare prices out of different airports, you can save yourself a lot of money.

For example, Los Angeles Intl (LAX) can be pricey. But there are six airports in California that are cheaper than LAX. Long Beach Airport is just a 20-minute drive away and offers California’s cheapest flights from its single, terminal.

“With its rich history and culture, it is no surprise that our guests are eager to visit Rome. We are thrilled to provide Western Canadians with increased connectivity to this incredible city. We are also excited to bring guests from Rome to visit Canada and assist with the recovery of Canada’s vital tourism industry,” said Angela Avery, WestJet’s Executive Vice President of External Affairs at the launch of the new flight.
