When you think of the ideal vacation, what comes to mind? Europe, the beach, a ski trip, camping… something else?

Whatever comes to mind, a common theme most of us share when planning a getaway is that we want it to be easy. We stress enough in our normal lives, so why should we stress on vacation?

Well imagine stepping off a plane and into a tropical paradise just an hour later.

No long-haul flights, no customs lines, no jet lag. Just the warm sun, the gentle breeze, and the crystal-clear waters of the Florida Keys.

This isn’t just a dream; it’s the reality that awaits at Playa Largo Resort in Key Largo.

Back Again and Again

The first time I took a trip to the Keys was another lifetime ago when I was about 12. We road-tripped all the way to Key West from Louisville, Kentucky.

I remember loving every second, and I’ve been back several times since! The most pleasant things in life are worth endlessly repeating, and The Keys are no exception.

Last year was another road trip, but this year I had the great pleasure of checking out Playa Largo.

And let me tell you, it did not disappoint!

This was my favorite shot I took of Playa Largo. It shows two of my favorite parts: the pool and the overwater cabanas. Pics like these make me glad I bought a drone!

While I like to see different sections of The Keys each time I go, I’ll be tempted to simply book a week at Playa Largo next time.

Why, you ask?

I have 5 main reasons…

1) Easy, Breezy, Beautiful… Playa Largo

Sometimes, the best things in life are the hardest to attain. Advanced degrees, chiseled abs, fancy cars… you get my point.

But sometimes, the best things are ridiculously easy, like a Playa Largo getaway!

Not only do you not need a passport to visit this gorgeous property, but you’ll be spoiled for flight options since Miami is so well connected (there are 80+ direct connections in the U.S.).

Once you land, Playa Largo is only about an hour away by car.

Talk about easy to reach!

2) Luxury Redefined, Nature Inspired

Sounds pretty buzzwordy right? Still, I mean it!

Playa Largo felt luxurious in a different way than most resorts, and that’s partly because of how much they went out of their way to preserve the natural environment when building the property.

I stayed in one of the Bungalows, and every time I walked to my room, I felt like I was walking on a gorgeous wooded path in the jungle.

But don’t let the ‘isolation’ fool you. While I felt worlds away in my room, I was only ever steps away from the beach, the pool, the amazing restaurants, and the gym.
I had the world at my fingertips while feeling like I had the whole resort to myself.

The Bungalows have 2 levels, and a full service kitchen. It really feels like you are in your own little home during your stay.

Best of all, when you stay in a Bungalow, you get breakfast brought to your room every day!

Talk about luxury… I didn’t need anything more than a robe to get my breakfast and coffee each morning.

Here were some of the top things I loved about staying in a Bungalow at Playa Largo:

Daily breakfast: Wake up, don your robe, walk to your front door… breakfast awaits!

Full kitchen: While I didn’t take advantage on this trip, I typically like to cook a few meals for myself when traveling, making this room perfect.

HUGE Master Suite: You know how I said the Bungalow was 2 floors? Well, the top one is the Master, the whole floor! Nothing screams luxury like a massive room with an equally massive master bath.

Giant Tub: I literally never take a bath at home, but when in Rome… anytime I stay somewhere with an amazing looking tub I have to try it out, and Playa Largo takes the cake! The tub even had a little tray with everything you need to make for a relaxing time in the tub.

Privacy: The second I reached my “Room” (it’s really more of a house if we’re honest), I felt like I had total privacy. Even drinking coffee on my balcony in the mornings felt private since I was surrounded by trees.

3) Adventure Awaits, Relaxation Beckons

I don’t know what your typical vacation looks like, but I prefer to have a bit of it all. I like adventure, and I like relaxing.

I want to be able to get my heart pumping if the mood strikes and to tune out and turn my brain off too.

This was easy at Playa Largo, and part of the reason I’m keen to head back.

One of my favorite parts of the property, which made for a relaxing time, was the floating cabanas. We had a cabana reserved for the afternoon and took full advantage!

When you book one, you get a cooler with some drinks already picked out, a Bluetooth speaker, and full service as if you are at a restaurant, meaning you can even order your lunch out to the cabana.

I loved being able to have my feet in the water while floating on the ocean and eating lunch in the shade.

Good music, good company, good drinks… all on the water!

Another highlight of my stay was Playa Largo’s Eventide, a celebration of the shift from day to night.

Think live music, special drinks, and fun activities! One of my favorite parts of the ceremony was a table where you could write something you were stressed or worried about on a piece of paper, and then you toss it into a firepit that gets lit and pulled out into the water.

I’d tell you what I wrote, but I don’t want to bring the worries back 😂.

Some of my other favorite activities (both adventurous and relaxing) included:

Sound Bathing Meditation: We enjoyed a guided meditation on the beach with singing bowls. It was the perfect way to start the day, and really set the tone for a day of relaxation. For those seeking a wellness getaway, you’re in luck! Playa Largo is hosting ReFLEXions September 13-15 which will have wellness classes, spa experiences, and motivational sessions to achieve the reset so many of us need!

Snorkel Trip: Playa Largo has a catamaran right on site operated by Caribbean Watersports, so it was super easy for us to go out for a snorkel session! I love any excuse to get underwater, and this was one of my favorite activities of the trip.

Massage: What more is there to say? You can never go wrong with a massage! I went with the Ocean Spa Signature Fusion Massage and practically melted into the table. As a daily laptop user, it was amazing to have a week of respite from my constant neck pain after such a great massage.

I couldn’t not snap a pic with these! Very cool experience.

4) Culinary Journeys, No Passport Required

Just saying it again… you don’t need a passport or long flights to enjoy amazing destinations!

And you certainly don’t need one to enjoy the incredible food on offer at Playa Largo.

I could write a whole article about the amazing food here, and I’m getting hungry typing this out…

My favorite dining experience was definitely the Evening Water Table (check it out here).

Something about walking into the water to sit at your dinner table made the whole experience that much more special.

While the sun set behind us, we enjoyed cocktails and appetizers before ordering our mains. If it’s something you like, I highly recommend the Pork Belly Chicharron.

Be sure to dress for the occasion! I accidentally wore pants that were difficult to roll up and ended up getting them a bit wet. WORTH IT!

Plus, the Bungalows had a washer and dryer, so it was a non-issue.

To top it all off, the experience comes with a mini Polaroid camera to capture the moment so you can take it with you when you are done.

One thing that really stuck out about Playa Largo was how attentive they were in making sure you walked away with memories of your stay.

Staff were quick to offer to snap pictures for you, and even quicker to make sure you were always having the best time.

Wine and S’mores are a surprisingly good mix!

A few more of my favorite culinary delights were:

Tropical Mixology Class: The very first night at Playa Largo, we jumped right into a mixology class with the head bartender, and it kicked off a new hobby! I had so much fun that making cocktails has become a weekly adventure. I still make the Hemingway Daquiri a lot (a Playa Largo fave), and have the ingredients on hand at all times!

Summer Nights Chimenea: After our water dining experience, we capped off the night by making s’mores and sipping on delicious wine around a few Chimeneas. It was a great opportunity to chat around the fires while enjoying some delicious treats!

5) Key Largo’s Charms At Your Doorstep

Finally, don’t forget to leave the property (even though you may not want to!). Key Largo and nearby Islamorada have plenty to explore.

Grab a bite at the world-famous Fish House or head to Islamorada to visit the Florida Keys Brewing Company.

We toured the brewery last year and loved spending an evening there. The beer is great and the vibes are off the charts.

Live music, local artists, and psychedelic décor await!

If you have the chance and you are certified, Key Largo also has fantastic diving. It’s easy diving, as pretty much anywhere you go in the Keys is going to be shallow.

The best way to try out a few beers is to order a flight. The darker one was my fave!

These 5 U.S. Airlines Are Most Likely To Experience Flight Delays Right Now

The holidays are just around the corner, leading to some of the busiest travel weeks of the year. Flight delays are extremely common at this time of year, especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Flying can already be a stressful experience, but delays can make it even more of a hassle.

Some of the best ways to avoid flight delays are to book with an airline with a high rate of on-time flights and to book a flight early in the morning — statistically speaking, it’s much less likely to be delayed than one later in the day.

According to new data from UpgradedPoints, these are the U.S. airlines that are most likely to experience flight delays right now.

1. Frontier Airlines

The worst airline for flight delays right now is Frontier Airlines. Flights with this budget carrier have a 31.9% chance of being delayed.

Rather than roll the dice and risk an almost 1-in-3 chance of having your flight delayed, it’s better to choose a more reliable airline for flights this winter.

Frontier is also currently facing other issues, including a class-action lawsuit over the airline’s $599 “unlimited flight” pass that was launched earlier this year.

2. Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines had a massive meltdown last year right around Christmas, leading to thousands of flight delays and cancellations.

Many travelers questioned whether booking with Southwest was safe in light of the total operations failure. And while it’s likely that Southwest will be working extra hard to avoid a repeat incident this winter, you may not want to take your chances.

And according to historical data, Southwest flights still have a 31.8% chance of being delayed, making the airline almost as unreliable as Frontier.

3. JetBlue

Another less-than-reliable airline with a high chance of delayed flights is JetBlue. This New York-based carrier does not have the best track record when it comes to on-time flights.

Although it’s not quite as bad as Frontier or Southwest, flying on JetBlue means that you still have a whopping 30.8% chance of flight delays when you travel.

4. Allegiant Air

Next up on the list of airlines likely to have delays is Allegiant Air. This budget airline is not particularly reliable, so even though you may save money booking your flight, you might also have to contend with unexpected delays.

Allegiant Air flights have a 29.2% chance of being delayed.

5. Spirit Airlines

Finally, we have Spirit Airlines. Although this budget carrier is the butt of many jokes for being a less-than-ideal way to travel, it’s actually not as bad as some other U.S. airlines when it comes to delays.

When flying with Spirit, you have a 28.1% chance of experiencing a flight delay.

Which Airlines Have The Least Delays?

So now that you know which airlines are most likely to experience flight delays right now (and which airlines to avoid!), here are the airlines with the least delays.

Although you might be tempted by ultra-low fares with an airline like Frontier or Spirit, it can be worth the extra money to book with a more reliable airline.

Here are the top three airlines with the least delays right now:
- Alaska Airlines: 20.3% chance of delay
- Delta Air Lines: 19.1% chance of delay
- Hawaiian Airlines: 15.6% chance of delay
Flights can be delayed for many reasons, including problems with the aircraft, staffing issues, weather, and more, but these three airlines experience the fewest delays.

There’s no surefire way to avoid flight delays (as nice as that would be!), but you can check out this guide for some more tips on how to escape the dreaded delay or cancellation.

The resort is central to Key Largo’s top attractions, like John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and it has plenty to do on the property, with an amazing pool, a private beach, and delicious food. Plus, you’re only a few minutes away from Islamorada, meaning you can experience 2 Keys in one during a stay at the Reefhouse Resort.

One of the top things to do in Key Largo (and the rest of the Keys for that matter) is to go diving or snorkeling. Don’t worry if you forgot your mask; the Reefhouse Resort & Marina has a dive shop right on site!

Get Underwater

Don’t Forget To Eat

You will not go hungry in the Keys. There are so many incredible places to grab a bite to eat that we could write a novel listing them all out. However, there are a few that you definitely shouldn’t miss! Key Largo has one of the best places to grab a bite, the famous Fish House.

The Fish House has locally sourced seafood that is to die for, all served in a quirky “keys-style” restaurant. Just give them a visit and you’ll see what we mean. This is the perfect spot to grab lunch after a morning dive and it should definitely be on your list of must-dos.

Plus, there are plenty of opportunities to grab some photos with friends and family.

An Evening In Islamorada

If you are staying at the Reefhouse or somewhere nearby, be sure to schedule an afternoon/evening to visit Islamorada. This is the Key directly below Key Largo and is close enough that you can check it out without having to swap hotels.

There are 2 things you definitely need to add to your list of must-dos in Islamorada, and both are delicious.

Firstly, no visit to the Keys is complete without spending some time at The Florida Keys Brewing Company. As you can imagine, space is a prized commodity in the Keys, which is part of what makes this brewery so special.

The Florida Keys Brewing Company brews all of their beer right on-site and is one of the only local breweries that can truly say their beer is made right in the Keys.

Aside from how incredible the beer is, the property itself is eclectic and inviting. Everyone you meet will be friendly and nice, and you’ll be surrounded by incredible artwork, amazing beer, and a welcoming vibe.

After a beer or two, you’ll feel like a regular and probably start contemplating a move to the Keys 😅.

After a tour of the brewery, head right across the street for an amazing sunset dinner at Morada Bay Beach Café. This was one of our favorite dinners in the Keys. Not only was the food incredible, it was beautiful. Even your water comes out dressed to the nines!

And not only was the food delicious and beautiful, the scenery was gorgeous as well. We found ourselves pulling out the camera to try to capture the sunset as it would paint a different picture of the evening for you every few minutes.

If you want to feel like you are eating dinner in a beautiful painting, this is the place to do it.

Heading South

The upper Keys are beautiful, and we already can’t wait to go back, but you are missing out on some of the most iconic sights in the Keys if you end your adventure there.

After spending some time checking out Key Largo and Islamorada, be sure to pencil in a few days to head down the most beautiful stretch of highway in the U.S. to Key West.

Overseas Highway in The Florida Keys

And there’s no need to rush; there are great places to stop off for a bite to eat or take in the scenery along the way.

We left right at around lunchtime, so we made a stop in Islamorada for a delicious meal at the Oceanside Safari Restaurant and Lounge — be sure to try their special Mojito with fresh mint!

It’s the perfect way to cap off your lunch and will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.

On your way down to Key West, you may find yourself staring out of the window at the ocean around you.

There is no other highway in the U.S. that gives quite the same feeling as the Overseas highway, and you’ll be glad you decided to drive through the Keys.

Be sure to stop off at the end of a bridge or two to take it all in and grab some photos.

Before you make it all the way to Key West, consider stopping at Bahia Honda State Park for a beach break. There are award-winning beaches and gorgeous stretches of sand to set up camp for a few hours. If you have snorkeling gear, definitely be sure to explore what’s in the water as well!

Pick The Perfect Hotel For You

After catching some sun and sand, you’ll be ready to head into Key West to your hotel (of which there are plenty!).

Depending on what you are looking for during your stay in Key West, there are tons of hotel options to suit your needs. Much of Key West’s action is centered around Duval Street, so if you are coming for the nightlife that may be where you want to look.

However, we wanted to be close enough to the action to enjoy all Key West has to offer without being right in the thick of it. We wanted to enjoy Key West but stay somewhere that felt like its own secluded area away from the rest of the island.

The Capitana Key West was the perfect place to call home that achieved exactly what we were looking for.

From the second you check in you can feel the calm and relaxing energy of The Capitana.

If you are staying in the main hotel building, you’ll have incredible views of the pool and beach from your room, but for a more intimate experience, we opted for the Two Bedroom Cottage.

Many people who come to Key West dream of packing up and moving there after visiting. Staying in a cottage allows you to feel like you already do!

The property is a great escape that you could spend your whole trip enjoying if you wanted to, and it is great for every type of traveler and party size.

Spend the afternoon sipping cocktails by the pool or get active and try your hand at some badminton. Either way, you’ll love your stay at The Capitana.

Key West Is Endless Fun

You’ll have trouble deciding what to do with yourself because there are endless opportunities to have an amazing time in Key West, but let us help you out by sharing some can’t-miss experiences:

Sunset Sail

There are plenty of companies offering sunset sails, and if you walk to the Marina, you’ll see signs for all of them. We decided to head out with Sebago Key West and would absolutely do it again!

You’ll head out to the beat of a live musician while the (included) drinks start to flow, and the breeze from the ocean will cool you down before taking in a gorgeous sunset from a unique perspective.

Keep an eye out for dolphins and turtles. If you are patient, you’ll likely spot a few.

Dolphin Watch & Snorkeling

Speaking of dolphins, if you’ve never seen them up close and personal, then you should definitely go out on a dolphin watch. We went with Honest Eco, and cannot recommend them enough.

They explained so much about Key West’s dolphin population and you could tell they cared a great deal about the dolphins and making sure the experience was a great one for both humans and dolphins.

We were lucky enough to have some dolphins come right up to our boat to say hello, and it was a bucket list item of mine. I’m a bit of a sucker for animals, and this experience was surreal. I’ve always loved dolphins and been amazed at their intelligence; I’m not ashamed to say I teared up having them so close — there’s no experience quite like it.

If you are on the fence about a dolphin watch, go ahead and book it, especially if heading out with Honest Eco.

Hemingway House

The Hemingway House is a classic tourist attraction in Key West, but there’s a good reason for it. The house itself is gorgeous, and the history behind it is fascinating.

Most people know it as Ernest Hemingway’s former home, but before Hemingway owned it, it once belonged to Asa Tift, one of the richest people to ever live in Key West and the most famous wrecker in the area.

Even if the history of the home isn’t your thing, it’s fun to see how many kitties you can spot around the property, all of whom are UNESCO world-heritage protected and allowed to roam the property at will.

Kayaking Tour

Many of the best things to do in Key West are in or on the water, and a kayak tour is one of them.

You’ll see all sorts of wildlife from nurse sharks to starfish, and get to learn about the importance of the mangroves and their significance in the ocean ecosystem.

Kayaking through the mangroves makes you feel completely cut off from the world in the most beautiful way and is an experience you should try at least once. For a one of a kind experience, we went with Lazy Dog Charters.

Food Walking Tour

I can’t stop going on food tours! Seriously, they are the best way to learn about a new destination and a great way to get the lay of the land at the beginning of your trip.

Not only do you learn about the area geographically, but you will also leave with a huge list of all the best places to eat and drink. Aside from the food, you’ll also learn about the culture and history of the area.

In Key West’s case, you’ll never be short on history, culture, or food to sample. Around every corner, there is another story waiting to be told and a new one ready to unfold. There is so much fascinating history in Key West, and it is certainly one of the most unique places in the U.S.

Valladolid is a great option for a weekend getaway if you’re hoping to witness firsthand a colonial-era settlement where centuries-old customs are maintained.

Originally settled by the Mayans, Valladolid was captured by the Spanish in the mid-16th-century, who named it after an already-existing city in Spain, and it would be under the control of the colonizers that it would flourish as an important trading and cultural hub in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Tourists often pinpoint the beautiful Cathedral of San Servacio, towering high over the town square, and Valladolid’s well-organized grid-like structure, a remnant of the Spanish period, as some of the main landmarks to be seen.

Sitting on the edge of the famous Sian Ka’an Reserve, yet relatively unknown to most day-trippers, it is one of a handful of towns in the overtouristed Riviera not yet ruined by over-development, and a ‘family first,’ traditional community where Mayan dialects continue to be spoken by some locals, besides Spanish.

The linguistic heritage is, in fact, a huge part of Felipe Carrillo Puerto’s tourist offer, with a visit to the Na’atik Language and Culture Institute ranking as the number one to-do activity on TripAdvisor.

It is credited with helping keep Mayan culture alive and bridging gaps between foreigners and locals.

The town is also home to the Holy Cross Catholic Church, an important part of post-colonial Mayan History, and the folk Museo Maya Santa Cruz Xbaalam Naj, a free museum chronicling the History of the natives during the Caste War when the Mayan populace revolted against Hispanic settlers.

Izamal

Population: 15,101

Distance driving from Cancun: 3h53

Yet another treasure of the state of Yucatan, easily reachable from Cancun, in the neighboring Quintana Roo, Izamal is a postcard-ready ‘yellow city’ that’s been stealing the hearts of visitors for years now.

It is the furthest one out, at just under 4 hours of driving, but it can be toured as a day trip if you time wisely, though it is best visited as an overnight destination.

After all, Izamal’s cultural wealth is well and truly boundless.

Stroll its cobbled streets, flanked by vibrant-colored buildings dating back centuries, and you’ll be transported back to the 16th century when the Spanish first made landfall and chased the native Mayans out of the land.

Though at least five pre-Columbian structures are visible in Izamal to this day, including a Mayan pyramid, the main attraction on site is the Franciscan Monastery, with an open atrium second in size only to the Vatican’s.

El Cuyo

Population: 1,567

Distance driving from Cancun: 2h36

The smallest settlement on this list, El Cuyo, is a quaint spot on the shores of the Caribbean that has successfully eluded city planners and international brands.

Located in the state of Yucatan but only two and a half hours away from Cancun, it was recently named by The Cancun Sun, the largest independent website on Riviera Maya news, a ‘traveler’s paradise’, and we’re inclined to agree.

Described as having sandy streets and a ‘fishing village ambiance’, it offers resort guests basing themselves in Cancun a much-needed escape from the agitated atmosphere of the chaotic metropolis and its tourist-filled sands.

El Cuyo may lack the Riviera Maya’s more advanced infrastructure, but it’s made great strides towards improving its attractiveness to guests in recent years, from the investment in better internet connectivity to the opening of ten boutique hotels and preservation of the town’s beaches.

Soon enough, El Cuyo could be inscribed on Mexico’s list of Magical Towns, recognized for their historical significance and/or inestimable value to the tourism industry.

Each winter, cities around the world come alive with unique and festive Carnival celebrations. Carnival is the celebration that occurs before Lent, the 40-day period prior to Easter, when it is customary for many Christians to fast. Carnival is celebrated in over 50 countries, each with its own unique traditions and events. Celebrations are typically marked with parades, colorful costumes, live music, and festive dancing and can last more than a month.

Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, Trinidad

May visitors to Trinidad and Tobago have said that if Trinidad is not celebrating Carnival, then they are preparing for Carnival. The annual festival is a huge part of the culture in this southern Caribbean Island, and next year it will be held from February 15 – February 22.

The Carnival in Trinidad is the largest in the Caribbean and typically attracts over 800,000 people. With a six-mile parade route, epic parties that start at 2 am and continue to daybreak, and some of the most elaborate costumes, Carnival in Trinidad is not to be missed.

Carnival of Binche, Belgium

The celebration culminates with a parade of men dressed as Gilles – French musicians originating in Burgundy in the early 1400s. Viareggio Carnival, Italy

Viareggio’s Carnival is so unique and popular that it is televised each year nationally.

Rio de Janeiro Carnival, Brazil

Often attracting over 2 million tourists to the popular beachfront city, Rio’s celebration is quite the spectacle. After being canceled for the past 2 years, the 2023 celebration will take place from February 17 – February 25 at venues throughout the city and will feature samba music and dancers, the famous Samba Parade, and epic parties.

The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

The Carnival of Santa Cruz takes place in Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, and attracts 200,000 spectators. The 2023 celebration will have events taking place between January 20 – February 26 with the theme of “New York – The City That Never Sleeps.”

One of the most popular events is the gala to elect the Carnival Queen, where contestants dawn flamboyant costumes in an attempt to win the crown. On “Carnival Tuesday,” a magnificent parade takes place throughout the streets before marking the official end of the ceremony when the spirit of Carnival, symbolized by a sardine, is paraded throughout the streets before ultimately being set on fire.

Venice Carnival, Italy

Venice’s famous Carnival celebration has been around since at least 1296 and will take place from February 4 – February 21, 2023. Each year the event hosts a boat parade and light show on the Rio di Cannaregio canal. The 10-day celebration plays host to several masquerade balls where attendees wear period costumes and dawn fancy masks.

Of particular note is the Flight of the Angel, when the winner of a local contest zip lines into St. Mark’s Square to mark the official start of the celebration.

Mardi Gras, New Orleans

New Orleans is famous throughout the world for the epic parties and parades that make up its unique celebration. While the actual day of Mardi Gras is on (Fat) Tuesday, February 21, 2023, celebrations span the city for the two weeks prior.

With nearly 80 parades throughout the Big Easy, it is no surprise why 1 million people flock to New Orleans each year. The celebration is known for its parades, where beads and coins are tossed to onlookers from elaborate floats surrounded by fantastic marching bands.

When the opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico this fall presented itself, I jumped on it immediately. Having lived elsewhere in the Caribbean since July, I was interested to see how different things were in San Juan. As an American, I knew I could travel to Puerto Rico without a passport. However, it didn’t register how truly easy it was to visit until I flew to San Juan.

The flight was a breeze! A lovely 2.5 hours from Miami with gorgeous weather, so the view from above turned the world below into a painting.
Having never been to Puerto Rico, I still felt like I was traveling to another country outside of the States. With Puerto Rico being a U.S. territory however, flying into San Juan was like any other domestic flight. When I landed and took my phone off airplane mode, I had fantastic cell service. Once deplaned, a small part of me felt like I needed to go through customs.

Instead, I was outside the airport and waiting for my ground transport in about 5 minutes! The drive to my hotel, The Sheraton, was smooth and short, which felt out of the norm for the Caribbean. If you’ve frequented much of the Caribbean, you probably know how rough the roads can get!

Not The Puerto Rico I Was Expecting

As we all know, the media often tends to exaggerate. As my departure date inched closer, I watched two hurricanes make landfall in Puerto Rico. First Fiona, and then Ian. Friends and family kept asking me if I planned to cancel my trip. I never had any intention of doing so, but did wonder what things would be like when I arrived.

By no means am I discounting the impact Hurricane Fiona and Hurricane Ian had on residents of Puerto Rico, particularly those in the south. Still, while exploring San Juan, I saw no evidence of storm damage and no areas without power, save the occasional traffic light. Everything seemed to be operating business as usual.

Speaking with my driver on the way to the hotel, he recounted his experiences throughout various hurricanes. He told me how much his life changed during Hurricane Maria, one of the worst to ever hit the island. Fiona and Ian were no comparison, at least for him.

Brad Dean, CEO of Discover Puerto Rico, later informed us at a press conference that Hurricane Fiona barely impacted travelers’ plans to come to the island for vacation. Less than 10% canceled their trip, and in Dean’s words, Hurricane Fiona was “a setback, not a reset.” Indeed, most of Puerto Rico was and still is completely open and safe for travel.

One Of The Best Ways To Give Back

It may seem counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to help the local economy of Puerto Rico, even after a hurricane, is through travel and tourism. Even something as simple as grabbing a quick bite at a local brewery adds up and supports the locals who work there.

During my stay, I had the pleasure of talking to numerous locals working in the tourism sector. Each of them echoed this sentiment, traveling to Puerto Rico and enjoying local activities is one of the best ways you can help.

An Immense Cultural Experience

Since it was my first time in Puerto Rico, I didn’t know what to expect. My typical go-to destinations are mostly European, and I have a deep-rooted love for the old. Marveling at the beauty of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, walking among ancient Viking burial mounds in Mølen, and exploring Blarney castle in Ireland are memories solidified in my brain. Not because of their visual appeal, but because of the connection I felt to the history and culture of those experiences.

Puerto Rico now has a place among this special set of memories, and I can’t wait to go back. Walking through the historic district of Old San Juan showed me that Americans don’t have to travel far to see a unique blend of history. Old San Juan is the oldest city in the U.S. and its territories. Visitors can see gorgeous buildings displaying Baroque, Neoclassical, Gothic, and Spanish Colonial architecture — all within walking distance of each other. On the western side of Old San Juan, some buildings date back to the 1500s — the history lover in me felt right at home.

A Unique Take On History

I explored Old San Juan in a unique way that I highly recommend to anyone visiting the area. Rather than simply walking around and exploring independently, I went on the Old San Juan Walk & Taste Tour with The Spoon Experience. This tour wasn’t just a guided walk among beautiful buildings and experiencing local food and drinks. While that was certainly part of it, what made the tour unforgettable was the vast amount of history eloquently expressed by our incredible guide.

In just a few hours, I sampled the most authentic local foods available while learning each meal’s historical and cultural significance. In between our food stops, our guide talked about Old San Juan’s rich history. From the obvious details like its strategically defensible position, to the not-so-obvious fact that the endless shade offered by San Juan’s architecture only exists due to a poor compass reading during the city’s planning. There was so much incredible history shared, and I can’t wait to go back and do it again to learn more!

Top 6 Reasons I’ll Be Going Back To Puerto Rico

It’s So Easy – Visiting Puerto Rico was like taking everything great about the Caribbean and packaging it with easy domestic flying. My flight from Miami was only 2.5 hours, and getting through the airport and to my hotel was a breeze. If I lived in Miami, I’d visit Puerto Rico on every available long weekend.

For More Of Old San Juan – I fell in love with Old San Juan the moment I saw it. The architecture, the charming little shops, and the immense cultural experience have cemented this beautiful city in my mind.

For The Adventure – My trip was spent in San Juan, but next time I head to Puerto Rico, I plan to check out more off-the-beaten-path sights. Some that I have in mind include El Yunque National Forest and Laguna Grande, a bio bay where visitors can experience the beauty of bioluminescence in the water.

For More Beach Time – I didn’t spend much time at the beaches, but definitely will in the future! From the gorgeous El Escambrón in San Juan to the stunning Pelícano Beach in Ponce, I’ll be scoping out Puerto Rico’s beaches during my future trips.

For The Art – I had the pleasure of taking part in a walking art tour in Santurce, a municipality in San Juan known for its vibrant art scene and exciting nightlife. Just like the culinary tour, it was a history lesson in disguise. I learned more about Puerto Rico and its people during the tour than I ever had in school. This was entirely due to our incredible guide from theartwalkpr.

For The Food – The food, I miss it so much! Aside from the Old San Juan Walk & Taste tour, I had the pleasure of taking a cooking class with Mesa Redonda at the lovely Cocina Abierta. My group was responsible for making the Sofrito, a staple base for many Puerto Rican dishes. Everything was incredible, and I left convinced that every meal should start with Alcapurrias and end with Tembleque.

Best Times To Visit Puerto Rico

I’m of the opinion that anytime is the best time to visit. However, depending on your preferences, there are months of the year that may best suit your needs.

To avoid crowds, stick to the shoulder seasons of September to mid-December and mid-April to May.

To save money, June through September is generally more affordable, as it is hurricane season. Just keep an eye on the weather and be sure to purchase suitable travel insurance, and you’ll be all set.

To avoid rainy days, shoot for February, as it is one of the driest months of the year.

How To Get There

While you may stop and see Old San Juan for a day during a cruise, if you want to stay in Puerto Rico for a while, you’ll have to fly. This is where Puerto Rico shines when compared to many other Caribbean destinations. San Juan has over 25 direct routes from the U.S. mainland, and flying in is incredibly easy.

Americans will not need a passport, and there is no lengthy customs line waiting for you upon landing. Not only that, it’s typically quite affordable. For instance, a direct flight from New York City to San Juan can be found for around $300 with JetBlue this November, carry-on included. Puerto Rico is undoubtedly one of the most accessible destinations in the Caribbean.

The Number One Reason I’ll Be Back

I arrived in Puerto Rico not knowing what to expect. I left with a newfound love and respect for the culture and people that made this island come alive. While the experiences themselves were incredible, the people behind them were the true magic. And they, more than anything else, are the reason I’ll be coming back.

Emirates Will Spend 2 Billion Dollars Improving Its Onboard Experience For Passengers

Emirates has big plans to ramp up its services for travelers.

Earlier this month, the airline announced that it is investing over 2 billion U.S. dollars for onboard improvements such as revamping its aircraft with the latest designs, technology, and other amenities in order to enhance its passengers in-flight experience. We’ve got all the details below.

New Passengers Services Will Launch This Month

“While others respond to industry pressures with cost cuts, Emirates is flying against the grain and investing to deliver ever better experiences to our customers. Through the pandemic we’ve continued to launch new services and initiatives to ensure our customers travel with assurance and ease, including digital initiatives to improve customer experiences on the ground,” said Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airlines following the news.

“Now we’re rolling out a series of intensive programs to take Emirates’ signature inflight experiences to the next level,” he continued.

According to the airline’s press release, some of the new passenger services onboard on Emirates are scheduled to launch this August.

Improved In-Flight Services For All Passengers

While Economy Class passengers may not be getting champagne and caviar, all passengers on Emirates flights in 2022 will be able to enjoy services like new and improved menus, upgraded seats, and flight attendants who’ve just completed world-class hospitality training.

Among the new services for travelers on Emirates is ‘New Inspirations, New Menus’, which will be introduced for Business and Economy Class passengers starting September 1, 2022.

Emirates’ New Vegan And Sustainable Menus

The airline announced its new plant-based meals for its vegan passengers or to anyone else who’d like to sample vegan food on board.

The dinner menu includes pan-roasted king oyster mushrooms, a jackfruit biryani, as well as sliced kohlrabi garnished with burnt orange. For dessert, travelers can choose between a vegan truffle cake with hazelnut, pistachio, and gold leaf, or a green grape tart with candied rose petals, vanilla custard, and berry compote with yuzu pearls.

For travelers on Emirates flights departing from Dubai, the airline has launched a sustainable food menu initiative. Menu items will include fresh greens from Bustanica, which is currently the world’s largest vertical farm and located in Dubai.

Emirates’ Upgraded Cabin Interiors

According to Emirates, the biggest investment is an upgrade of its aircraft fleet interiors. Airline cabins will be “retrofitted with new or reupholstered seats, new panelling, flooring and other cabin features.”

Refurbishments will happen for all cabin classes and new Premium Economy cabins will also be installed on a total of 120 of Emirates’ aircraft.

Plans to refurbish the cabins is scheduled to begin this November.

Emirates’ ‘Cinema in the Sky’

First Class passengers will soon be treated to Emirates’ new and unique “Cinema in the Sky” experience. These passengers will get to choose between 5,000 channels on the airline’s ice in-flight entertainment system to make their very own movie day on-board, including snacks available on demand. The impressive snack menu will include lobster rolls, edamame, juicy sliders, and of course, salted popcorn.
