Though the best time to visit Austria is still a topic of debate, there’s no doubt that the country offers visitors the quintessential fall experience.

Those who want to spend the season away from warm beaches and frigid mountaintops will find that Austria provides the ideal weather and scenery for the autumnal getaway of a lifetime.

Average temperatures in September and October range between 57 and 79° F (10 and 15° C), letting visitors know that the seasons have finally changed without making it impossible to enjoy a nice sunny day sightseeing.

Moreover, since this is the driest time of the year in the country, you won’t have to worry about rain or snow ruining your plans.

In fact, if you’re planning on enjoying a hike, picnic, or sightseeing tour, Austria’s weather provides the perfect setting.

What will really transform your visit into the quintessential fall experience, though, is the scenery.

Austria’s lush forests and abundant trees are a sight to behold, and right now, they’re being speckled with fiery reds, oranges, and yellows that’ll just get more vibrant as the season goes on.

That’s why, if you’re ever in the country, I can’t recommend partaking in some form of outdoor activity enough.

After all, Austria is renowned for hiking, climbing, rafting, and mountain biking, just to name a few.

An Abundance Of Outdoor Activities

No fall vacation is complete without a hike, or, at the very least, a sightseeing tour. Luckily, Austria offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, complete with the type of scenery that most of us only get to see in postcards.

After the record-setting temperatures of the summer, travelers are finally getting to partake in their favorite sports and physical activities without having to battle with the extreme heat.

If that sounds like you, the first stop in your itinerary should be Austria.

Walk along the picturesque paths of Trin, cycle alongside the Danube, or trek through the North Austrian lakes.

Just don’t forget to stop every once and again to take in the fields, mountains, and valleys that’ll be dressed in hues of orange in honor of the start of the new season.

Fall Events

If cultural attractions are more your speed, you can always cut back on the excursions and spend a couple of days in Vienna, Linz, or Salzburg instead.

The country’s capital is famous for its rich culture and history, which is manifested through the many events that take place in the city.

If you’re visiting Vienna in September, here are some events and attractions you might want to add to your itinerary:

Even Vienna starts to quiet down once the August rush subsides, providing you with all the perks of visiting a big European city with none of the chaos.

Greece has wrapped up the summer season as Europe’s top destination, surpassing the likes of Spain, France, and even Italy.

It’s clear that tourists are flocking to the country’s idyllic, white-sanded beaches in record numbers.

What many of us couldn’t have predicted, though, is the fact that Greece is continuing to attract a remarkable amount of visitors now that the temperatures have dropped and the beaches that filled our Instagram feeds just a few weeks ago have closed down.

According to the INSETE research body, the Mediterranean country is expecting over 4 million international visitors this month, and there are three destinations that have recorded the largest increase in tourists since last year.

Thessaloniki

This highly influential port city is set to become Greece’s trendiest hotspot this fall, expecting the biggest visitor arrival increase for September – a jump of almost 20% from the same time last year.

With an estimated 315,000 tourists arriving this month, Thessaloniki is about to turn into the country’s liveliest hotspot.

You can expect some of the city’s main attractions (The White Tower of Thessaloniki, Aristotelous Square, The Archeological Museum of Thessaloniki, and the ancient Roman Forum) to be extra busy during weekends, so make sure to plan ahead.

Since Greece is mostly known as a summer destination in the international travel community, the fact that a port city like Thessaloniki can experience such a surge of visitors only once the temperatures cool down might come as a surprise.

However, if you ever get to see the city for yourself, you’ll see why it’s so much more than just another resort town.

For starters, though Thessaloniki lies adjacent to the Aegean Sea, sunbathing in the city is not an option.

Those who spend their summers here need to travel back and forth to nearby beaches if they want to tan or take a swim.

Instead of beaches, the city boasts a long, stunning promenade that borders the sea, offering unparalleled views, especially this time of the year.

Beware though, that nights can get pretty windy, so make sure to bring a jacket with you if you’re a fan of seaside walks.

Moreover, Thessaloniki is famous for its rich cultural scene and lively atmosphere, so once in the city, there’s plenty to do and see without having to go to the beach.

Aside from the more traditional attractions mentioned above, tourists can also enjoy modern exhibitions like the Museum of Illusions (a must-see, in my opinion), the vibrant bar scene, and the many diverse restaurants that offer excellent-quality food at competitive prices.

If you don’t have the time to sit down and eat between sightseeing trips, I recommend getting a bougatsa or gyro to go – Thessaloniki is known for being home to some of the best variations of both.

Shopping enthusiasts will have the time of their lives here. Aside from the numerous shops located near Aristotle Square, they can also find a great outlet center named One Salonica right near the outskirts of the city.

Some of the most popular brands in the world (Nike, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Guess, Lacoste, Levi’s, Tommy Hilfiger, etc.) sell their merchandise here at heavily discounted prices,

Athens

Though the capital comes in at number two in terms of its increase in visitors from last year (15.4%), it’s still drawing in the highest number of tourists in the country.

Over 1.2 million people from more than 45 countries are expected to visit Athens this September.

Between the Parthenon, the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora of Athens, and the many, many museums that proudly display the city’s rich history, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to filling up your itinerary with cultural landmarks.

Moreover, the city provides all the perks of spending a fun night out in a gorgeous Mediterranean city without all the extra costs of getting around a place like Rome or Milan.

Rhodes

The third spot on the list is held by Rhodes, a famous summer hotspot that continues to draw in more than 437,000 visitors a month even as its beaches start to empty.

The largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands has apparently recovered from the devastating fires of July, seeing a 7.1% increase in visitors this fall compared to the same time last year.

Home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the island holds remarkable cultural value that tourists are able to enjoy all year long.

Its natural beauty, delectable cuisine, and fun year-round events further explain why tourists are still flocking to the Greek island even though peak season is over.

Although summer is the most common time of year for Americans to travel to Europe, one country has been exploding in popularity during the fall too.

If you missed out on the “European summer” trend this year that brought record-breaking crowds to this country, there’s still time to plan a fall trip to this destination — and you just might save money and have a better vacation too.

Italy is one of the most popular international destinations for Americans this fall. Normally most popular in the summer, fall is becoming an increasingly popular time to visit.

Here’s why fall is the best time to plan a trip to this beautiful European country:

1. Fewer Crowds

Summer in Italy is peak season, with the months of July and August seeing the highest crowds. However, things considerably cool off (both literally and figuratively) in September and October.

If you want to visit Italy without having to fight your way through the crowds, fall is a great time to travel.

During the summer months, things can get out of control, especially in major tourist hotspots. Portofino, Italy went as far as imposing a €270 ($300) fine on tourists who block a popular pedestrian walkway to take selfies.

But during the fall, you won’t have to wait in a massive line at popular tourist attractions like Rome’s Colosseum or Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice. You won’t find yourself elbowing through crowds in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery or searching in vain for an open spot on the beach in Positano.

Instead, you can enjoy fewer crowds and a calmer pace of travel during the fall. Many popular spots are devoid of crowds during the fall since it’s still an underrated time to travel to Italy.

2. Better Weather

Another benefit to visiting Italy in the fall is the milder weather.

Unfortunately, Italy has been suffering from extreme heat waves during the past few summers.

In July, temperatures hit a record-breaking 118° F (48° C) in parts of Sardinia and Sicily, the latter of which suffered from debilitating and destructive fires sparked by the extreme heat.

Throughout the rest of the country, temperatures were regularly above 100° F (38° C) this summer. Such extreme heat takes the fun out of exploring Italy.

It’s hard to enjoy sightseeing at the Colosseum or the Roman Forum under the scorching sun, and it makes other outdoor activities like hiking in Cinque Terre unpleasant and borderline dangerous.

This is why fall is such a great time to visit Italy. In the southern part of the country, the weather cools down considerably, but it’s still warm enough that you can have a beach getaway in a destination like Sardinia or the Amalfi Coast.

In the northern part of the country, fall also brings pleasant, cooler weather to destinations like Venice that can be unbearable in the summer.

3. Cheaper Prices

Finally, cheaper prices are drawing more and more travelers to Italy during the fall.

From early June through the end of August, travelers can expect to pay elevated prices for hotels in Italy. Not to mention, flights are also much more expensive.

With flight prices up more than 25% in 2023, many travelers found the cost of a trip to Italy to be too much this summer. However, flights during the months of September, October, and November tend to be significantly cheaper than flights during the summer.

You can also save a fortune on hotels in Italy during the fall, especially in coastal destinations like the Amalfi Coast, Ischia, or Cinque Terre where fall marks the beginning of the “shoulder season” slump in tourism.

Although fall is becoming a more and more popular time of year to visit Italy, you can still take advantage of these benefits right now while it remains somewhat underrated.

These Are The Top 5 Safest States To Visit In Mexico This Fall

Mexico has historically been one of the most sought-after destinations for U.S. travelers, breaking tourism records time and time again.

However, some states in the country still raise concerns in terms of safety, giving potential travelers pause before they even get a chance to book their trip.

So, if you’re planning on taking a trip south of the border this fall, it’s important to do your due diligence and ensure that your destination of choice is safe and welcoming to tourists.

To help you with that decision, Crimen en Mexico, a website dedicated to crime statistics in Mexico, has compiled a list of the safest (and most dangerous) states in the country.

These are the destinations that came out in the top 5:

5. Aguascalientes

Covering a modest 2168.35 mi² (5,616 km²), Aguascalientes is a lesser-known landlocked state that boasts some of the country’s best vineyards and hot springs.

While not your typical beach hotspot, tourists still come to the area to enjoy the San Marcos Garden, the Ojo Caliente Thermal Springs, and La Isla San Marcos (an entertainment complex located on the island in the middle of the San Marcos Lake).

Aside from its natural and cultural attractions, Aguascalientes is also known for its quiet, relaxing atmosphere – in part due to the low violence rate (6.9 per 100,000 people) in the state.

4. Durango

Though not so much at the forefront of mainstream tourism as some of the following destinations on the list, Durango is the backdrop of Mexico’s most naturally blessed landscapes.

The state is even nicknamed “The Land of Films” since many Hollywood projects have taken place in its diverse terrains.

Cinema buffs will be happy to learn that “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” (starring Clint Eastwood) and “The Revenant” (starring Leonardo Di Caprio) both feature scenes that have been shot right in Durango.

Moreover, the state’s capital, Victoria de Durango, has a well-known historic center with many well-preserved baroque buildings.

However, Durango’s biggest selling point right now is its low violence rate of 6.8 (per 100,000 people).

3. Baja California Sur

Home to some famed cities such as Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, Beja California Sur is renowned for its laid-back atmosphere and world-class beaches.

The entire Baja California peninsula has recently gained international recognition for its stunning scenery, crystal-clear waters, and the unparalleled level of safety it provides its visitors.

With a violence rate of 4.6, Baja California Sur comfortably holds the no. 3 spot in the “Safest States In Mexico” ranking.

If you’re looking to steer clear of resort towns this fall but still want to catch a glimpse of the region’s stunning beaches, you can always book a trip to La Paz.

The state’s capital is famous for its seafront Malecón promenade, gorgeous parks, and vibrant art scene, welcoming tourists from all walks of life.

2. Coahuila

The landlocked state located in northeastern Mexico is often treated as an afterthought by tourists who are eager to experience the country’s world-class beaches.

However, what the city lacks in coastal allure, it more than makes up for in history, culture, and, as it turns out, safety too.

Coahuila boasts an impressively low violence rate of 4.3, so if you want to see another side of Mexico this fall, I suggest adding it to your travel bucket list.

The state is home to some of Mexico’s biggest, most influential cities, including Saltillo (the capital), Acuña, Monclova, and Piedras Negras.

1. Yucatán

Luckily for tourists looking forward to visiting some of Mexico’s most gorgeous attractions, Yucatán, home to dozens of breathtaking beaches, was deemed remarkably safe.

Though the region did record 44 homicides from August 2022 to July 2023, it still boasts a record-low violence rate of 1.9.

In comparison, the country’s most dangerous state, Colima, recorded 873 homicides in the same timeframe and has a violence rate of 107.1.

If you’re ever in the region, you won’t want to miss out on the capital, Mérida. Known for its vibrant nightlife and rich Mayan heritage, the city has welcomed over 888,000 visitors during the first eight months of 2023 alone.

Chichén Itzá, one of Mexico’s most famous historical attractions, is also located within the state, despite tourists often assuming that the landmark is located in Quintana Roo due to the geographical proximity between the two.

The ancient Mayan city that covers 4 square miles (10 square km) is a sight to behold, so make sure to add it to your itinerary.

If you’re looking for 80-degree weather with a little less rain, then the fall is the best time to visit the Florida Keys from November-April.

With hurricane season ending and the mugginess in the air disappearing, the temperatures during this time of the year are tolerable for most travelers.

With schools back in session for the year and families back to work, these few months also come with fewer crowds compared to the summer. The spring breakers haven’t quite made their way to the coast yet- so get there before they do!

Prime-Time For Underwater Fun

If you’re planning a trip to the Florida Keys, don’t forget to book some type of underwater excursion. With some of the best beaches and marine life in the U.S., it’d be a shame not to make a few fishy friends on your trip here.

The best time for snorkeling in the Keys is often from October to May, as the temperatures are a little cooler and drier. Try your luck spotting turtles, barracudas, and even the serene manatees.

Buffalo, New York

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland is a very underrated city, and although the main attractions here such as The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame are not free for out-of-towners, there are many things to do here that won’t cost a thing.

One thing Cleveland is known for is the many parks and walking trails around the city, offering free views and a workout as well. Without leaving the city you can explore the beloved Towpath Trail, which is over 100 miles long.

You can also check the events calendar at Crocker Park for free concerts or check out the Cleveland Public Theater’s free shows. Recently named one of the best free attractions in America, The Cleveland Museum of Art is always free and absolutely worth a visit.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

While Chicago might be the more famous Lake Michigan city, Milwaukee deserves consideration for a fall trip for many reasons. Cheaper, smaller, and quirkier than its more famous neighbor, Milwaukee is home to the bronze Fonz, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and the Harley Davidson Museum.

Accommodation won’t break the bank here, and Airbnb’s in the more eclectic neighborhoods might offer a chance to see the city as the locals do, at a fraction of the price of a downtown hotel.

Pennsylvania’s Steel City is iconic in many ways, with the endless bridges crisscrossing the three rivers, the stadiums showcasing the skyline in the background, and the locals showing off their unique food and drinks scene (pickle-backs anyone?).

Burlington, Vermont

The trendy city of Stowe might be Vermont’s number one claim to fame in the fall season, but missing a chance to visit Burlington at this time of year would be a mistake.

Burlington is magic in any weather, but the small university town set along the imposing shores of Lake Champlain is the perfect backdrop for a cheap fall getaway. While hotels might be a bit on the pricy side, finding an Airbnb a bit out of town (with more nature to marvel at) can save some money.

Jamaica Is Breaking Tourism Records This Year

According to Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, the country is on track to reach its goal of hosting 3.8 million visitors by the end of the year, having already hit the 2.47 million mark between January and July.

Out of those, 1.72 million were cruisegoers making landfall for a stopover, more than twice 2022’s numbers.

As Bartlett noted, this represents an increase of more than 24 percent in ‘gross tourism dollars earned’ in only seven months: ‘Coming out of the pandemic, tourism has consistently demonstrated its resilience and, as a result, the sector’s contribution to the Jamaican economy cannot be overlooked‘.

Since Jamaica reopened its borders last year, tourists have been flocking to the island in record numbers, and Americans make up a sizable percentage of those, as the United States is the most popular country of origin for arrivals.

With the peak travel season in its demise, fall will soon be upon us, which may spell bad news for sunseekers heading to Europe.

While it’s true it gets surprisingly hot in summer, the old continent cools drastically over autumn, as well as suffering from a sharp increase in precipitation levels, in general.

Come September, you may expect more cloudy, rainy days across much of Europe, particularly its Northern half, but one spot in particular looks set to remain perfectly sunny and potentially hot like summer when the off-season starts.

Located in the Southwest of Spain, close to the border with Portugal, the autonomous province of Andalusia is home to beautiful sandy beaches bounded by the azure Mediterranean Sea, fast-developing resort zones, imposing fortresses, and cobblestone towns.

In fact, you would be wise to deliberately avoid visiting Andalusia in summer when the heat is at its peak, as thermometers can easily reach 120 degrees (F) and higher in some spots, such as Cordoba, dubbed Spain’s hottest city.

Andalusia as a whole is known as the hottest region not only in Spain but all of Europe due to the hot air that constantly blows in from an arid North Africa, a stone’s throw away from mainland Spain, on the other side of the Mediterranean.

We wouldn’t be keen on vacationing in the regional capital Seville, dubbed the ‘Iberian oven’, nor the busy resort city of Malaga over summer when it’s quite literally too hot to be outside, but we’d pack our summery shorts for an off-season Andalusian break any day.

Believe it or not, Seville continues to enjoy warm highs of 90 degrees in September, decreasing to only 78.8 on average in October.

It cools further in November, down to an average of 68 degrees, but it just doesn’t really ‘do’ fall or winter as London, Amsterdam, and the like do.

You Can Still Swim At Andalusia’s Beaches In Spring

Malaga is the same, with a pleasant high temperature of 75.2 throughout October, the peak month for fall travel, and lows of 59, mostly at night.

Other popular destinations in Andalusia’s scenic Costa del Sol, the aptly-named Sunny Coast, such as Marbella and Estepona, are also no exception.

As reported by The Olive Press, August has arrived in the region with ‘warm air masses and tropical nights’, at a time when temperatures are already somewhat decreasing across Europe’s Mediterranean South.

If anything, this means Andalusia-bound vacationers are poised to experience yet another scalding autumn.

An Inestimable Cultural Wealth

Other than its year-round sunny weather, Andalusia is famous for its host of historical attractions. Having been ruled by Phoenicians, Romans, and Muslim caliphates from North Africa, it has an incredibly diverse cultural and architectural heritage.

The largest fortress in the medieval Moorish world, the Alhambra, is located in Granada, at the foot of Andalusia’s Sierra Nevada, having survived to this day as a reminder of the province’s Muslim past, and it’s definitely a bucket list item worth checking out.

Seville is well deserving of a visit, too, and you’ll want to reserve a couple of days or more to explore this sprawling capital, where a colorful historic center awaits you, the Bohemian atmosphere is infectious, and a landmark cathedral, formerly a mosque, towers above a charming plaza.

The Great Mosque in Cordoba, built during the Muslim occupation of Andalusia, is yet another Moorish-era structure tourists should not sleep on, especially when it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its well-preserved Islamic elements.

Moreover, Ronda is where you’ll find Spain’s most famous bridge, spanning a deep gorge, where traces of Roman and Moorish civilizations can still be seen.

Finally, take a road trip across the Andalusian countryside, where you’ll be met with whitewashed, medieval villages etched onto limestone cliffs and perched atop hilltops, most notably Setenil de las Bodegas, where dwellings were built beneath rock overhangs centuries ago.

Andalusia is easily one of the most fascinating destinations you could explore in Spain, and with its balmy weather well into early November, it is unlikely you will have to pack heavy coats to visit in the next couple of months.
