When you think of the ideal vacation, what comes to mind? Europe, the beach, a ski trip, camping… something else?

Whatever comes to mind, a common theme most of us share when planning a getaway is that we want it to be easy. We stress enough in our normal lives, so why should we stress on vacation?

Well imagine stepping off a plane and into a tropical paradise just an hour later.

No long-haul flights, no customs lines, no jet lag. Just the warm sun, the gentle breeze, and the crystal-clear waters of the Florida Keys.

This isn’t just a dream; it’s the reality that awaits at Playa Largo Resort in Key Largo.

Back Again and Again

The first time I took a trip to the Keys was another lifetime ago when I was about 12. We road-tripped all the way to Key West from Louisville, Kentucky.

I remember loving every second, and I’ve been back several times since! The most pleasant things in life are worth endlessly repeating, and The Keys are no exception.

Last year was another road trip, but this year I had the great pleasure of checking out Playa Largo.

And let me tell you, it did not disappoint!

This was my favorite shot I took of Playa Largo. It shows two of my favorite parts: the pool and the overwater cabanas. Pics like these make me glad I bought a drone!

While I like to see different sections of The Keys each time I go, I’ll be tempted to simply book a week at Playa Largo next time.

Why, you ask?

I have 5 main reasons…

1) Easy, Breezy, Beautiful… Playa Largo

Sometimes, the best things in life are the hardest to attain. Advanced degrees, chiseled abs, fancy cars… you get my point.

But sometimes, the best things are ridiculously easy, like a Playa Largo getaway!

Not only do you not need a passport to visit this gorgeous property, but you’ll be spoiled for flight options since Miami is so well connected (there are 80+ direct connections in the U.S.).

Once you land, Playa Largo is only about an hour away by car.

Talk about easy to reach!

2) Luxury Redefined, Nature Inspired

Sounds pretty buzzwordy right? Still, I mean it!

Playa Largo felt luxurious in a different way than most resorts, and that’s partly because of how much they went out of their way to preserve the natural environment when building the property.

I stayed in one of the Bungalows, and every time I walked to my room, I felt like I was walking on a gorgeous wooded path in the jungle.

But don’t let the ‘isolation’ fool you. While I felt worlds away in my room, I was only ever steps away from the beach, the pool, the amazing restaurants, and the gym.
I had the world at my fingertips while feeling like I had the whole resort to myself.

The Bungalows have 2 levels, and a full service kitchen. It really feels like you are in your own little home during your stay.

Best of all, when you stay in a Bungalow, you get breakfast brought to your room every day!

Talk about luxury… I didn’t need anything more than a robe to get my breakfast and coffee each morning.

Here were some of the top things I loved about staying in a Bungalow at Playa Largo:

Daily breakfast: Wake up, don your robe, walk to your front door… breakfast awaits!

Full kitchen: While I didn’t take advantage on this trip, I typically like to cook a few meals for myself when traveling, making this room perfect.

HUGE Master Suite: You know how I said the Bungalow was 2 floors? Well, the top one is the Master, the whole floor! Nothing screams luxury like a massive room with an equally massive master bath.

Giant Tub: I literally never take a bath at home, but when in Rome… anytime I stay somewhere with an amazing looking tub I have to try it out, and Playa Largo takes the cake! The tub even had a little tray with everything you need to make for a relaxing time in the tub.

Privacy: The second I reached my “Room” (it’s really more of a house if we’re honest), I felt like I had total privacy. Even drinking coffee on my balcony in the mornings felt private since I was surrounded by trees.

3) Adventure Awaits, Relaxation Beckons

I don’t know what your typical vacation looks like, but I prefer to have a bit of it all. I like adventure, and I like relaxing.

I want to be able to get my heart pumping if the mood strikes and to tune out and turn my brain off too.

This was easy at Playa Largo, and part of the reason I’m keen to head back.

One of my favorite parts of the property, which made for a relaxing time, was the floating cabanas. We had a cabana reserved for the afternoon and took full advantage!

When you book one, you get a cooler with some drinks already picked out, a Bluetooth speaker, and full service as if you are at a restaurant, meaning you can even order your lunch out to the cabana.

I loved being able to have my feet in the water while floating on the ocean and eating lunch in the shade.

Good music, good company, good drinks… all on the water!

Another highlight of my stay was Playa Largo’s Eventide, a celebration of the shift from day to night.

Think live music, special drinks, and fun activities! One of my favorite parts of the ceremony was a table where you could write something you were stressed or worried about on a piece of paper, and then you toss it into a firepit that gets lit and pulled out into the water.

I’d tell you what I wrote, but I don’t want to bring the worries back 😂.

Some of my other favorite activities (both adventurous and relaxing) included:

Sound Bathing Meditation: We enjoyed a guided meditation on the beach with singing bowls. It was the perfect way to start the day, and really set the tone for a day of relaxation. For those seeking a wellness getaway, you’re in luck! Playa Largo is hosting ReFLEXions September 13-15 which will have wellness classes, spa experiences, and motivational sessions to achieve the reset so many of us need!

Snorkel Trip: Playa Largo has a catamaran right on site operated by Caribbean Watersports, so it was super easy for us to go out for a snorkel session! I love any excuse to get underwater, and this was one of my favorite activities of the trip.

Massage: What more is there to say? You can never go wrong with a massage! I went with the Ocean Spa Signature Fusion Massage and practically melted into the table. As a daily laptop user, it was amazing to have a week of respite from my constant neck pain after such a great massage.

I couldn’t not snap a pic with these! Very cool experience.

4) Culinary Journeys, No Passport Required

Just saying it again… you don’t need a passport or long flights to enjoy amazing destinations!

And you certainly don’t need one to enjoy the incredible food on offer at Playa Largo.

I could write a whole article about the amazing food here, and I’m getting hungry typing this out…

My favorite dining experience was definitely the Evening Water Table (check it out here).

Something about walking into the water to sit at your dinner table made the whole experience that much more special.

While the sun set behind us, we enjoyed cocktails and appetizers before ordering our mains. If it’s something you like, I highly recommend the Pork Belly Chicharron.

Be sure to dress for the occasion! I accidentally wore pants that were difficult to roll up and ended up getting them a bit wet. WORTH IT!

Plus, the Bungalows had a washer and dryer, so it was a non-issue.

To top it all off, the experience comes with a mini Polaroid camera to capture the moment so you can take it with you when you are done.

One thing that really stuck out about Playa Largo was how attentive they were in making sure you walked away with memories of your stay.

Staff were quick to offer to snap pictures for you, and even quicker to make sure you were always having the best time.

Wine and S’mores are a surprisingly good mix!

A few more of my favorite culinary delights were:

Tropical Mixology Class: The very first night at Playa Largo, we jumped right into a mixology class with the head bartender, and it kicked off a new hobby! I had so much fun that making cocktails has become a weekly adventure. I still make the Hemingway Daquiri a lot (a Playa Largo fave), and have the ingredients on hand at all times!

Summer Nights Chimenea: After our water dining experience, we capped off the night by making s’mores and sipping on delicious wine around a few Chimeneas. It was a great opportunity to chat around the fires while enjoying some delicious treats!

5) Key Largo’s Charms At Your Doorstep

Finally, don’t forget to leave the property (even though you may not want to!). Key Largo and nearby Islamorada have plenty to explore.

Grab a bite at the world-famous Fish House or head to Islamorada to visit the Florida Keys Brewing Company.

We toured the brewery last year and loved spending an evening there. The beer is great and the vibes are off the charts.

Live music, local artists, and psychedelic décor await!

If you have the chance and you are certified, Key Largo also has fantastic diving. It’s easy diving, as pretty much anywhere you go in the Keys is going to be shallow.

The best way to try out a few beers is to order a flight. The darker one was my fave!

10 million people flock to a vibrant coastal city in Texas, yet it still flies under the radar.

Often overshadowed by the Caribbean-esque beaches of Florida and even neighboring Gulf Shores, Texas is commonly seen viewed as a hootin’ hollerin’ good time in many of the state’s inland cities.

Texas may not have a seat at the table with the likes of Cancun and Los Cabos, but it more than holds its own in the South.

As a born and raised Texan, I can tell you to skip Galveston’s brown waters, but Corpus Christi is a pretty cool place to visit, even if you never step foot on the beach.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Dallas, Houston, and Austin lies a laid-back getaway ready to surprise you this summer from nearby beautiful beaches, delicious fresh seafood, and a thriving arts scene.

No Need To Visit Florida! Head To The Coast Of Texas Instead

There’s no doubt about it, Florida draws a crowd.

From the immaculate city of Miami all the way around to the Florida panhandle, you will find hordes of tourists enjoying the sun and sand at some of America’s best beach locations.

However, when it comes to Texas, most of the millions of visitors are locals who are aware of Corpus Christi’s allure.

A lot of Texas is flat, nothing reminiscent of paradisal beaches. But once you reach the southernmost points of this vast state, you will find a treasure trove of hidden gems flying under the radar.

Stretching from Corpus Christi to the Mexican border, this region isn’t discussed enough as a top vacation destination, especially in summer.

Florida’s hidden gems are unveiled left and right, but it’s time to shine a light on Corpus and the surrounding area.

And to do that, it needs to be affordable, right?

Budget-Friendly Beaches: Corpus Christi‘s Affordable Stays

Unlike California, the South, including Florida, is typically viewed as an affordable beach destination.

This is true for most of the South – you know, Gulf Shores, Destin, Biloxi, and yes, Corpus Christi.

Airfare can be hard to track with so many factors changing day to day, but Corpus Christi is large enough for its own airport.

On the other hand, hotels are much easier to keep an eye on and rates typically stay in the same ballpark unless there’s a major event.

In other words, if Taylor Swift isn’t touring here, you’re solid!

Corpus has some awesome hotels to stay in overlooking the scenic bay, historic U.S.S. Lexington, and even scattered around nearby beach towns.

Downtown has undergone major renovations where you can easily explore the newfound booming arts scene and surprises like European-esque cathedrals from affordable name-brand hotels such as:

Formerly the main draw of Corpus were the many tributes to native singer Selina, but this delightful city is undoubtedly a beach destination.

Although, most would agree it’s best to go outside the city limits to level up in terms of quality.

In nearby Port Aransas, Padre Island, and Mustang Island, there are some great deals too such as:

Fresh Seafood Galore: Indulge In The ‘Catch Of The Day’

Anyone in Texas, or perhaps in the South for that matter, knows the cult-like following of Whataburger, founded right here in Corpus Christi.

But this seaside city’s foodie claim to fame isn’t fast food burgers; it’s fresh seafood straight from the source.

My personal favorite is beachfront restaurant Fajitaville, a unique blend of Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville vibes mixed with Tex-Mex dishes, but also serve Shrimp Cocktail and Ceviche for your seafood fix.

There are too many to name individually, but what you want to do is take advantage of the breezy patios while indulging in your ‘fresh catch’.

Even more so for dinner as the Texas heat winds down with epic sunset views.

Tourists Warned That Sargassum Will Invade Mexico And Florida Beaches This Spring

If you are on your own way or have already taken a trip to the beautiful beaches of Florida or Mexico this month, you couldn’t have timed your vacation better.

Travelers fork over huge amounts of money to visit the best beaches, but sometimes Mother Nature has other plans.

Hurricanes or untimely rain are one thing, but icky, smelly sargassum can ruin the whole vibe of a picture-perfect sunny beach getaway.

Bits of seaweed are bound to wash up from time to time, but sargassum is an unsightly brown seaweed that tends to be more like an aquatic invasion.

For those planning on heading to Florida or Mexico, experts from the University of South Florida (USF) have been monitoring the sargassum blooms and providing reports each month.

Popular Beaches Affected This Spring

Whether you’re packing a passport or not, some of the most popular beaches this spring are expected to see brown goop wash ashore.

Spring Breakers, in particular, always seem to have Florida and Mexico at the top of the list and that’s exactly where tourists are being warned about.

As the giant blobs of sargassum make their way to land through the Caribbean, travelers still have time to alter their plans or, at the very least, change their expectations.

Florida is expected to be directly impacted by April, according to USF. Although, southwest Florida, including the Keys, may not see sizable amounts until late April or May.

Cancun, for example, has already been hit earlier than expected.

Mexico’s top beach destination has some of the most out-of-this-world blue waters imaginable, and it is close to the States.

Given it’s the most popular international vacation spot for Americans to visit, many will surely be disappointed with the eyesore of sargassum ruining their ocean views.

Even though beaches are being impacted, sargassum is no stranger to Mexico’s shores; Tulum and Playa del Carmen are always affected, too.

The Good News

This isn’t the first rodeo for these destinations. When spring arrives, somebody somewhere across major beach destinations is preparing for worst-case sargassum scenarios.

As these vacation spots thrive on tourism, it’s not like they want to deal with the bad press of ugly, stinky beaches.

While there doesn’t seem to be a bulletproof solution, there are some strategies being implemented, including the installation of barriers and cleanup crews.

Even the Mexican Navy is getting involved to better protect beaches to give tourists the best possible vacation experience.

Sargassum arriving on popular beaches is inevitable, but the good news is substantially less is expected to arrive this spring than previous years.

Experts Continue To Monitor Sargassum Movement

Each destination handles sargassum invasions their own way, but experts will continue to monitor its movement across the ocean and update accordingly.

Until then, it’s wise to check the latest reports on whichever destination you’re planning a beach trip to and temper expectations just in case.

Mother Nature is undefeated, after all. For now, the biggest blooms seem to be expanding through the East Atlantic and Caribbean Sea, which just so happens to have some incredible beaches in its path.

USF has issued some very insightful reports, but the March bulletin has not yet been issued.

What About The Gulf?

Florida may be super popular but the U.S. is home to some awesome beach getaways, including Florida’s neighbor Alabama, which is surging in popularity already.

The latest reports show minuscule amounts of sargassum in the Gulf of Mexico, where there are many beach vacation destinations to choose from.

Of course, there is no guarantee, but this region may serve as a great alternative beach spot. With some highly underrated and super cheap beach getaways, sargassum-free vacations are not hard to find with just a little digging.

As for Mexico, Los Cabos is one of the most popular beach destinations for Americans and not at risk of seeing sargassum given its prime location on the southern tip of Baja.

Florida never seems to lose any steam as one of the most visited states in America. It goes without saying travelers are always seeking sun-soaked getaways, especially when incredible beaches are involved.

As far as beaches go, Florida is among the best in the country for beach vacations, whether it’s a day trip or your main stay.

Of course, the shining star of Florida is Orlando where the most world-renowned theme park calls home.

But not every Florida traveler is seeking to make up for lost time and feel like a child again through the wonders of Disney, so there are many other places to enjoy in the Sunshine State.

Heck, even Jacksonville is breaking tourism records. This spring, however, one of the best places to visit is the sunny city of Tampa.

New Cheap Flights

As winter winds down, there is no better time to plan for your spring trip. Tampa may be your best bet for a cheap flight as one of the nation’s most popular low-cost airlines is launching a plethora of new flights to Tampa between March and April.

It’s no coincidence all 4 cities with new flights have cold winters to get travelers in the mood for some fun in the sun.

Spirit Airlines will fly to TPA from the following 5 cities beginning in early March:
- Milwaukee (March 6)
- Kansas City (March 7)
- Memphis (March 7)
- Nashville (March 8)
These routes are nonstop, but travelers from other cities will be able to connect on one of America’s cheapest airlines.

Anticipating A Record-Setting Spring Break

Why all the new flights? Well, spring breakers have to get to Tampa somehow, right? Since a majority of college students are ballin’ on a budget on the ramen noodle diet, these new flights will be one of the best options for a much-needed spring break.

There are so many awesome places to enjoy spring break in the coming months, but Tampa is expecting a new record of tourists to pour into their airport and nearby beaches.

Florida is one of the best destinations for a quintessential spring break, and Tampa is forging its own path to lure in more tourists to consider their beaches.

Yes, Tampa Is A Beach Destination

Tampa proper isn’t known for stunning beaches like many other Florida cities. However, Tampa makes for an excellent gateway to some of the best beaches in the U.S.

In fact, nearby Siesta Key has been consistently ranked as one of the top U.S. beaches for years, and it’s only an hour away.

Other small towns south of the city are absolutely delightful, but perhaps no more than the picture-perfect “island” of Anna Maria slightly closer than Siesta Key.

The city of Tampa sits on the waterfront, offering scenic views, but the most worthwhile beaches are still in close reach.

You can’t go wrong choosing between Siesta Key, Anna Maria Island, or a handful of incredible beaches in Clearwater, such as the paradisal Honeymoon Island.

Affordable Luxury Hotels

We all get it – the urge to splurge. That’s how expensive beach destinations, such as Los Cabos, maintain their popularity.

But, sometimes, we have to be reasonable, and Tampa is one of those places to experience luxury hotels without breaking the bank.

Excluding the JW Marriott, which is about $500 per night, many other luxury hotels are much closer to the $100-200 range.

Not all are beach resorts per se, but downtown Tampa is worth a visit too.

Springtime Is Perfect To Enjoy The Outdoors

Tampa may not be world-renowned like Orlando and Miami, but it’s fun destination with great weather year-round.

Besides being on the lookout for Florida’s infamous alligators, Tampa is perfect to spend your days outdoors in the springtime.

Beyond the beaches are fun activities like bike rentals through the city’s boardwalks, tiki boats, zip-lining, dolphin tours and the expansive state parks in the region, spring is an excellent time to take advantage of Tampa’s attractions.

This Florida City Will Be One Of The Top Destinations In The U.S. For 2024

Florida is always among the top destinations for a fun, sunny escape.

As winter temperatures drop by the day, perhaps more than ever Florida is on travelers’ minds.

But let’s be real – Florida is an awesome getaway no matter the season. In fact, some would argue there is too much sun at certain times of the year.

That’s what beach days are for, right? However, there is one major Florida city known for its fun year-round attractions and no beach within 60 miles.

This city is consistently one of the most visited in the U.S., and those in the know are predicting it will only become more popular in 2024.

Orlando Is Booming

Along with Miami, Orlando is a top 5 destination in the U.S. in terms of popularity right now, and with good reason.

Orlando is nonstop fun and not just for grown-ups. This city is a safe space for the entire family or the perfect excuse to act like a kid again.

The “fountain of youth” may not be real, but imaginations can run wild in a judgment-free zone in the city’s number one world-famous attraction.

We’re talking Disney World, of course. Some would say Disney World is more of a household name than the city itself.

But the heartbeat of Orlando that brings in hordes of tourists is no doubt the world’s top amusement park, plus a handful of others.

What’s New At Orlando’s Theme Parks?

Disney World is the most notable destination for countless hours of thrills, but many love visiting the Universal Orlando Resort too.

Both parks are constantly adding new experiences, so it’s not the same-ol’ same-ol’ each year. Do you know how hard it is to keep kids entertained?!

Whether the whole crew is paying a visit or not, Orlando’s theme parks are fun for all ages.

For 2024, there are three new adventures to check out at Disney World:
- The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure
- Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
- Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana (already opened, but new to most visitors)
For Universal Orlando, 2023 was a year of many debuts, including the crowd favorite Minion Land. This year, park guests can experience Dreamworks Land with popular characters brought to life from hit films, Trolls, Shrek and Kung Fu Panda.

If these parks don’t tickle your fancy, SeaWorld Orlando and Legoland Florida have fun new additions, too, and may have fewer crowds, comparatively speaking.

New Luxury Stays

No matter your reason for visiting Orlando, not everyone desires Mickey Mouse decor in their hotel room.

Away from the magic of Disney are four new luxury hotels welcoming guests in 2024. On Lake Nona, there will be the new Aloft Orlando Lake Nona opening doors this month.

Additionally, there are a pair of new resorts tourists can stay at – Villatel Orlando Resort and the Evermore Orlando Resort.

Villatel comes with the caveat of a soft opening in 2024, with full completion expected in 2025. While the Evermore is a gargantuan property with a man-made lagoon neighboring another new lavish hotel – the Conrad Orlando.

Some Orlando hotels received cushy upgrades, too, with the most noticeable being the 5-star Waldorf Astoria Orlando, with an overhaul of select rooms and culinary offerings.

Affordable And Sunny

According to reports, travel to West Palm Beach was bolstered this year by growing airplane and train traffic.

Several airlines launched new flights to Palm Beach International Airport this year.

Delta Air Lines started service from White Plains, New York to PBI, while the low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines launched flights from Wilmington, Delaware to PBI.

These and other seasonal routes make it easy for travelers from other parts of the United States to get to sunny West Palm Beach, especially to escape the cold this winter.

Additionally, the long-awaited Brightline train from Miami to Orlando officially launched this year, connecting more travelers to West Palm Beach.

Previously, Brightline opened stations in West Palm Beach and Boca Raton, two towns in Palm Beach County, but now stations have also opened in Miami and Orlando.

West Palm Beach is just one hour and 15 minutes by train from Miami and two hours and 10 minutes from Orlando.

A More Laidback Alternative To Miami

If you’re anything like me, the thought of the approaching winter is enough to send a shiver up your spine.

Cold, dark, and wet days are just not compatible with me, and I’m sure there are plenty of other travelers out there who feel the same.

For this merry band of sun seekers, there are many options available to us to help us find some winter sun and extend our intake of vitamin D long into the colder months.

And in the United States, travelers are lucky enough to have a unique and breathtakingly beautiful winter sun destination right on their doorstep.

I am, of course, talking about the Florida Keys. And luckily for all winter avoiders, there are a host of great reasons to take a trip down to this idyllic archipelago right now.

More Ways To Get There

This is a common occurrence with each winter, but it’s worth noting that the airline capacity is increasing drastically to the Keys over the next few months.

Key West International Airport (EYW), located at the very southwestern tip of this stretch of islands, is currently undergoing a major concourse expansion, which the Florida Keys and Key West Tourism Board says is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025.

Airlines including JetBlue, American Airlines, Delta, and United will be increasing and expanding their offerings of flights to this airport throughout November and December from U.S. cities, including Washington D.C., Boston, Chicago, New York City, and Newark.

With so many flights from so many different airports, you should still be able to secure a relatively affordable airfare if you book at the right time.

Development Of Accommodations

Despite its relatively small size, there’s no shortage of accommodation in the 125-mile-long Florida Keys, many of which have recently been expanded or developed to welcome a new wave of visitors this winter.

Some of the highlights, according to a recent report, include Flamingo Lodge in the Everglades National Park, Casa Morada Resort in Islamorada, Sun Outdoors Sugarloaf Key in the Lower Keys, and Casa Marina Key West, Curio Collection by Hilton, which has just undergone a significant renovation.

While it’s not known as the cheapest region to stay, the sheer number of resorts means that you can at least shop around a little.

Ample Attractions

Even though it seems like a place with a slower pace of life, there is no shortage of attractions and things to do in the Keys.

The tourism board recommends the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West, Crane Point Museum & Nature Trails in Marathon, and the Key West Lighthouse and Keeper’s Quarters Museum, which recently reopened after restoration work.

That’s before you even mention the fishing, the watersports, the wildlife spotting opportunities, and the State Parks.

Relaxation Is Part Of Life

If you’re not into hitting attractions every day, then the Florida Keys is pretty much the perfect place to simply exist, enjoying the warm winter days and amazing sunsets and sunrises.

This part of the world is the ideal place to give yourself some time to reset.

Temperatures in the Keys average in the mid-70s for most of the winter, and it is also the season where there is hardly any rain. Sounds like heaven to me…

No Jet Lag (For Most Of Us)

The Keys is within reasonable flying time for a huge chunk of the U.S. population, and its eastern time zone location means that jet lag isn’t really an issue for most people who venture out there.

When you think of the winter sun, you may imagine having to trudge halfway across the world or to the opposite hemisphere, but that’s simply not the case here.

You can enjoy a near-perfect climate close enough to realistically fly there even just for a long weekend.

A brand-new Key West marina has just opened this fall, called Happy Landings.

Sargassum Seaweed Has Arrived On Florida Beaches And Will Get Worse

For weeks, experts have been warning about giant masses of sargassum coming to Florida, the largest ever seen, and it has already started to hit the coasts.

According to the information shared by Fox 35 Orlando, piles of this seaweed are covering the American coast, and it is not even peak season yet.

Usually, the brown algae begin to appear on shorelines by the end of May or June, but it has come a bit earlier than expected this year.

Travelers visiting the beaches affected by sargassum seaweed are not having the vacation experience they expected, and the situation is already creating problems for locals, tourists, businesses, and the government since the safe removal of seaweed requires large investments.

Experts do not recommend touching the seaweed as it can be home to sea creatures that can produce rashes, and when it rots, it can emit toxic gases.

Florida isn’t alone, as other popular destinations like Cancun in Mexico have also experienced early sargassum seaweed arrival.

Sargassum In Florida

The presence of sargassum seaweed has already been reported on multiple beaches in Florida.

On the East Coast, Cocoa Beach has been one of the most popular beaches now covered with Sargassum seaweed. According to travelers at the beach, it is there in large amounts.

TikTok users have also shared recent videos with proof of the current situation.

The algae have also reached the west of Florida and arrived at the Gulf Coast beaches.

The account AllThingEmeraldCoast has also shared a video of Pensacola Beach, from just a few days ago, with the text: “Sargassum is starting to show up on Pensacola Beach 4/11/23, this year is the largest bloom in recorded history—I have a feeling it’s about to get a lot worse.”

South Beach in Miami also has piles of sargassum across the coast.

The account South Beach Helicopters shared recent aerial views of the seaweed washed up off the coast and beachgoers walking and swimming next to large masses of sargassum.

More Seaweed Expected

This is just the beginning of the sargassum seaweed season, and experts predict that once we approach the hot summer months, more algae will be found at the beaches.

Oceanography professor Dr. Chuanmin Hu said: “When we enter the summer months, by end of May or early June, I’d expect more sargassum along the ocean side of the Florida Keys and the east coast of Florida.”

More masses of sargassum seaweed could be coming from the eastern Atlantic. It’s hard to determine exactly how much and when, but local authorities are already taking measures to remove the seaweed from the beaches.

Experts are still researching and trying to understand this phenomenon, as it is getting worse than in previous years.

Is It Dangerous?

This type of macroalgae is usually not dangerous, but it can be under certain circumstances.

When it reaches the shore and rots, after a few days under the sun, it produces hydrogen sulfide, and besides smelling very bad, this gas can cause respiratory problems in some people that are sensitive to it.

This seaweed is also home to certain sea creatures that can produce rashes and blisters on the skin, so it is not advised to touch it.

Another risk is related to wildlife. While in the sea, the sargassum can provide shelter and help certain species breed, large piles of this alga on the coast can also threaten turtle nests in Florida.

And, while many consider a solution to eating these algae and there are multiple tutorials and videos online on how to cook it, experts have warned about the presence of plastic and metals—like arsenic and cadmium in it.

Ed Phlips, an algae researcher at the University of Florida, said that “it picks up all sorts of bacteria and algae and small plants and animals as it moves around.”
