Why You Should Book Your Winter Getaway To This Popular Beach Town In Mexico Right Now

The Mexican Caribbean has always been a hugely popular tourist destination for American travelers.

Boasting miles on miles of tropical coastline, a world-renowned hospitality industry, and luxurious resort zones, it is their go-to spot for relaxing and letting go of their mundane worries.

This year, however, this popularity seems to have soared to unprecedented new highs, leaving us wondering whether ‘shoulder season’ is even a concept still applicable to the region. That is particularly true in a trendy beach town that’s witnessing a record increase in bookings.

Playa Del Carmen is already filling up for winter, and travelers are now being advised to book their year-end getaway as soon as possible before they’re left out:

There Are Far Fewer Rooms Available This Winter Already

Following the start of the school year, it’s normally expected for bookings to decrease as families return home from the holidays and resort communities slow down operations in preparation for a much busier winter.

In that sense, 2023 has been rather atypical, as numerous destinations in Quintana Roo, especially those straddling the Mayan Riviera, have been recording a high number of hotel reservations as early as September.

A small beach town a short one-hour drive south of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen is no exception.

According to data gathered by the Cancun Sun, the leading news source on everything Cancun, 40 percent of rooms in Carmen are already filled for the peak season, which comprises December 2023 through February 2024.

September has been traditionally less busy, but now reservations are beginning to build as early as the fall period, with vacationers anticipating the high winter prices and either taking trips during the shoulder months or booking their winter getaway well in advance.

That seems to be the case for a majority, as highlighted by Osner Arjona, President of the Association of Small Hotels of Playa Del Carmen, who was quoted saying the town already has a ‘movement of reservations’ for late 2023 and early 2024.

This trend is expected to intensify further in October, the busiest month for winter bookings, as prices begin to increase and undecided tourists are forced to either make a decision or miss out on their Mexican Caribbean experience altogether.

The fact that bookings already sit at a whopping 40% should be perceived as worrying for those who plan on jetting off to Playa del Carmen this winter, as we are still early on into fall, and vacancy is already down significantly, as low as they would have been normally later in the year.

There is simply no way of telling how much lower occupancy rates will be come October or November.

The Longer You Wait, The Less Attractive Getaway Deals Will Be

While Carmen is unlikely to sell out completely – there are far too many accommodation options to consider, from luxurious resorts to more affordable AirBnB listings – the main concern here is the fluctuation in prices.

The higher the occupation rate, the more expensive accommodation gets, as a result of decreased competition and surging demand, so that is why you are advised to make those reservations right now, not only to secure the best prices, but also a beachfront spot.

Still, you may be wondering why exactly Carmen is suddenly on everyone’s radar.

Why Is Playa Del Carmen So Popular?

Carmen has a high concentration of luxurious resorts, wellness centers, and entertainment venues that place it at the front of the Mexican Caribbean’s tourism offer, up there with Cancun and Tulum.

In fact, one could even argue these three beach zones complement each other, with Cancun serving as the entertainment capital, Tulum the cultural heart and nightlife spot, and Playa Del Carmen the more laid-back alternative.

When going abroad, Americans strongly favor destinations where it’s easy to go and where they can get pampered without worrying excessively about the complexities of planning an international trip. With only 11 days of paid vacation on average per year on average, they want an all-inclusive vacay.

Carmen’s well-equipped resort zone gives them just that, with all of their favorite hospitality brands like the Hyatt, Thompson, Fairmont, and Marriott (just to name a few) having set up residence on the pristine coast.

Other than the ancient Mayan ruins and indigenous culture, the Mexican Caribbean is often associated with the five-star beachfront properties and the thin, white-sand beaches bounded by turquoise-colored seas, all boxes Playa Del Carmen effortlessly ticks off.

As it is much smaller than Cancun, it has a reputation for being more exclusive, though it is not exactly as quaint as the lesser-known Akumal: thousands flock to its bars and beach clubs every weekend for a taste of the (in)famous local nightlife.

It Is Extremely Safe

Another reason why Carmen has been exploding in popularity is the high level of safety, following improvements made by the current administration, responsible for the revitalization of the tourist zone, and deployment of more police to critical sites.

Due to the increased surveillance and zero-tolerance approach towards criminals, it is now one of the safest resort towns in Mexico, following years of being ill-reputed as a dangerous place for tourists.

The Cancun Sun went as far as stating Carmen may be added to the ‘Magic Neighborhoods’ program, a designation awarded by the Mexican Ministry of Tourism in recognition of an area’s cultural, historical, environmental, or economic significance.

The town will also be easier to get to from Cancun this winter, as it will be a stop on the Maya Train route, a new scenic railway linking all of the main tourist hotspots across the Mexican Caribbean, yet another factor that is certain to boost tourism and impact on hotel occupancy.

All things considered, it’s best you book that getaway sooner rather than later.

With fall quickly approaching and the likes of North America and Northern Europe getting colder and colder, travelers are beginning to turn their focus to sunnier destinations where temperatures will take longer to drop.

Understandably, many of them will be flocking to the Mediterranean.

The ancient sea, which borders not one but three continents, stays warm well beyond the summer months, and it offers visitors that much-needed subtropical getaway when the chilly autumn winds start blowing. Not only is it still warm and pleasant to visit, but it can make for an incredibly cheap vacation.

That is, if you’re not headed to the usual hotspots of Spain, Croatia, or Greece – and don’t worry, this is not another article on not-so-secret-anymore Albania:

Everyone, Meet Tunisia

This fall, one of the warmest and cheapest vacations is, in fact, not located in Southern Europe. Straddling the coast of North Africa, on the shores of the azure Mediterranean, lies the historical yet often overlooked nation of Tunisia.

As it is located on the ‘wrong’ side of the basin, it is largely ignored by sunseekers who normally ‘play it safe’ island-hopping in Greece or traveling down the Dalmatian Coast on the more developed, touristy European Mediterranean.

As you are about to learn, however, Tunisia has a comparatively vast tourist offer, and as it hosts fewer tourists, it is less crowded than its European competitors and also much more affordable.

Is the dollar-to-euro conversion rate hurting your wallet lately?

Despair not: in Tunisia, your tourist dollars will stretch a lot further, and you’ll get that long-anticipated off-season beach getaway at much more attractive rates.

Tunisia Is Freaking Cheap

You see, Tunisia is neither in Europe nor the Eurozone, and one U.S. dollar buys as many as three Tunisian Dinars. In Tunis, the capital and largest city of Tunisia, a single person’s estimated monthly expenses are around 1,389.30 Tunisian Dinar without accommodation.

In dollars, that is roughly $449.20. Compared to Malta, one of the trendiest fall destinations in Mediterranean Europe, Tunisia is, on average, 51% cheaper.

According to BudgetYourTrip, a one-week stay at a mid-range hotel on Tunisia’s turquoise coast is a very reasonable $344, with an average nightly rate of only $49.

Of course, you could go well above that and splurge on an all-inclusive five-star listing, but the point is, if you would rather save up some money instead while still treating yourself to a Mediterranean holiday, there are tons of options at hand.

The average price for a luxury hotel in Tunisia is $92, still according to BudgetYourTrip.

When it comes to food, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant will cost you a negligible $3.23, based on data gathered by Numbeo, while a three-course dinner for two at a mid-range eatery in an upscale district of Tunis or Sousse will set you back by $19.40.

Either way, a Tunisian vacay will hardly break the bank, whether you’re a big spender or a budget-conscious traveler.

Why Give Tunisia A Shot?

You already know it is shockingly cheap compared to other Mediterranean destinations, especially in Europe, but if you’ve never heard of Tunisia before, you may be wondering why this relatively unknown North African country is worth a visit.

First of all, it has a booming hospitality scene, particularly in Djerba, an island off mainland Tunisia best known for its sandy Mediterranean beaches and whitewashed towns, heavily influenced by Berber culture – a group native to North Africa and the Middle East.

Djerba is home to some of Tunisia’s most luxurious and expensive hotels, such as the Hasdrubal Prestige Thassala & Spa, equipped with a lagoon-style pool dotted with islets, inter-connected by footpaths and charming seafront villas.

This September, an overnight at the Hasdrubal will cost $139. To draw a comparison, even $150 would get you nowhere near the Hilton Diagonal Mar in overpriced Barcelona.

Fascinating Culture

On the mainland, popular resort towns include Hammamet, where tourists will find water parks and golf courses, as well as a whitewashed citadel dating back thousands of years overlooking the bright-blue sea.

Sousse is not to be missed, also, what with its contrasting cityscape, where both ancient and modern landmarks coexist.

From centuries-old cobbled streets that lead to a majestic Arab fortress and Roman amphitheaters to a palm-flanked boardwalk lined by restaurants and charming boutique hotels, you will find the best of both worlds here.

And then there is Tunis, the bustling Tunisian capital and the country’s financial center and beating heart. There is much more to Tunis than merely government buildings and clusters of skyscrapers, though: it houses some of the most beautiful French colonial architecture seen anywhere in Africa.

Central Tunis is particularly famous for its colonial-era art deco, which is not exactly well-kept but are still a source of fascination even when dilapidated.

A short 18-minute drive from Tunis, tourists will find yet another of Tunisia’s ancient wonders: the ruins of Carthage, one of the most powerful and legendary Mediterranean states of Antiquity.

Now an archaeological site, it costs only 12 Dinar, something like four dollars, to visit.

Tunisia Is Still Warm This Season

Buffalo, New York

As Western New York’s favorite city for a getaway, fall is when the up-and-coming city of Buffalo really comes alive. Blame it on Bills-mania, or the many Oktoberfests that are all over the region, but cheap activities in Buffalo are ripe for the (apple or pumpkin) picking in the fall.

With such close proximity to world-famous Niagara Falls, there is no shortage of places to stay in the Buffalo area on a budget. Make sure to check out the Ellicottville area and ride the chair lift for the best views of the foliage for around $12 a person.

And while catching a Buffalo Bills game might not be in the budget, tailgating is a cheap way to soak in the atmosphere for a fraction of the price. Uber to the stadium and party with the fans, then head to a fan-favorite Bills bar to catch the game.

Cleveland is a very underrated city, and although the main attractions here such as The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame are not free for out-of-towners, there are many things to do here that won’t cost a thing.

One thing Cleveland is known for is the many parks and walking trails around the city, offering free views and a workout as well. Without leaving the city you can explore the beloved Towpath Trail, which is over 100 miles long.

You can also check the events calendar at Crocker Park for free concerts or check out the Cleveland Public Theater’s free shows. Recently named one of the best free attractions in America, The Cleveland Museum of Art is always free and absolutely worth a visit.

For cheap eats, head to Cleveland’s historic public market, where everything from artisanal olives to homemade desserts are on offer for a fraction of what a sit-down meal would cost. While Chicago might be the more famous Lake Michigan city, Milwaukee deserves consideration for a fall trip for many reasons. Cheaper, smaller, and quirkier than its more famous neighbor, Milwaukee is home to the bronze Fonz, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and the Harley Davidson Museum.

Accommodation won’t break the bank here, and Airbnb’s in the more eclectic neighborhoods might offer a chance to see the city as the locals do, at a fraction of the price of a downtown hotel.

The trendy city of Stowe might be Vermont’s number one claim to fame in the fall season, but missing a chance to visit Burlington at this time of year would be a mistake.

While we might be a bit spoiled in America for fall foliage, it never hurts to do some international leaf peeping as well. The English countryside is always beautiful, but especially so in fall when the leaves change.

With numerous national parks including the stunning Lake District to visit, visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to watching the fall season roll in. Even a stroll around central London will reward you with an explosion of fiery fall colors at every turn.

Cheaper Prices

One thing to mention regarding prices is that big cities like London, Manchester, and Edinburgh will always be pricey, no matter the month. Meaning that waiting until the fall doesn’t mean you are likely to get a London hotel at a rock-bottom price, however, you are likely to see some money, so it’s worth checking around for good deals.

One area that is cheaper in the fall months would be the caroming and cozy smaller village pubs and bnb rooms across the country, where the landlords lower the room rates to attract visitors now that the summer surge has slowed down.

Attractions and tours are often a bit cheaper in the fall as well, meaning you can stretch your money much more than you would be able to in a summer visit.

Insider Tip: If possible, avoid traveling in the UK during their school half-term break, which for 2023 is around October 22nd – November 1st. This is when all the families will go on holiday and if not going abroad, will visit the top sites around the country.
