6 Reasons Why Northern Baja Should Be Your Next Mexico Getaway

Tijuana’s claim to fame is being the Most Visited Border City in the world. While this sprawling underrated city does receive a ton of tourism, most of it comes from foot traffic.

Being the most visited border crossing in the world, these tourism statistics are heavily inflated by border crossers, whether it’s locals who work in the U.S. or Californians coming down for a day trip.

But Tijuana and the rest of northern Baja are so much more than just pharmacies, dentists, and affordable health care.

Tijuana is a major city with millions of residents. It has also held a sketchy reputation for years. Like many other ‘dangerous‘ places, these crime statistics often don’t affect tourists.

    vibrant street in Tijuana

So many travelers go to Cabo, Cancun, or even Mexico City, but this region of Mexico should be a more popular getaway all on its own.

Here are 6 reasons why northern Baja should be your next Mexico getaway:

    First-Ever Route From American Airlines

Northern Baja just became easier to reach than ever before. If travelers wanted to come here, they would usually have to fly to San Diego or connect through another Mexican route.

American Airlines is set to become the only U.S. carrier to fly to Tijuana. The main airlines that serve Tijuana are all of Mexican origin:

    • Aeromexico
    • Viva Aerobus
    • Volaris

This exciting new route will allow more Americans direct access to this side of Mexico by taking one of their favorite airlines to Tijuana’s recently renovated airport.

Travelers can bypass the Cross Border Express by landing directly in Tijuana. Beginning in February 2024, American Airlines will fly direct to Tijuana with daily service from Phoenix (PHX).

    Tijuana Beyond The Border

At first glance, Tijuana may look like any other border town with pharmacies and dentists at every turn. But those who simply look at Tijuana as just another border town are doing themselves a disservice.

The city is massive with some really nice places to visit. Travelers will be surprised with the new luxury hotels popping up, such as the Quartz Hotel and Spa or new boutique hotels like the K Tower.

There is also a constantly growing culinary scene, whether it’s the classic Taco Alley, food trucks of Telefonica Gastro Park or fine dining in the ritzy Plaza Rio neighborhood.

Tijuana is a thriving, fun city far beyond its reputation of a dirty, crime-ridden no-go zone. Friendly locals welcome you with open arms and vendors playfully coerce you to “buy things you don’t need”.

Downtown is considered to be especially safe for tourists with trendy coffee shops, breweries and nightlife.

    Road Trip To Rosarito

Once you land in Tijuana or cross over from San Diego, the epic beach town of Rosarito is a must-add to your Baja trip.

However, Rosarito is home to a breathtaking coastline of beautiful beaches, cliffside restaurants and artisan shops. It’s an easy Uber ride or drive to reach.

One reason it remains under the radar is there are no all-inclusive resorts here. So Cancun, Cabo, and others take center stage over smaller beach towns like this.

It’s also advised to check swimming conditions before getting into the water.

    The Charming Town Of Tecate

Located east of Tijuana is the charming town of Tecate. If you’re thinking you’ve heard this name before, yes, this is where the popular Mexican beer calls home.

Other than brewery tours, there is plenty to see here in this safe, small town. In fact, it one of Mexico’s many pueblo magicos.

For a slower pace than the bustling streets of Tijuana, tourists will love visiting the main square in the heart of town – Parque Miguel Hidalgo.

What Tecate is known for, other than being a major producer of beer, is being the gateway into Baja’s gorgeous wine country.

    Escape To Baja’s Wine Country

To truly escape the crowds of other popular Mexico destinations, travelers will love exploring Valle de Guadalupe.

Located south of Tecate, this stunning region of Baja is the ultimate getaway for a relaxing time. Not only does this area have amazing wineries, but also one-of-a-kind accommodations.

There are some very unique places to stay, ranging from luxury resorts and boutique hotels to sleek Airbnbs.

A perfect way to spend time in the stunning landscape of Baja is by enjoying the region’s finest wine.

    A Gem In The Desert

Far East of Tijuana and Tecate is another major border city – Mexicali. This city in the desert caters to those with a sense of adventure and appreciation of amazing sunsets.

People come to the dunes to have an awesome time sandboarding and riding ATVs near the Arizona border.

This city is also a cultural hub you wouldn’t expect. It was once home to the largest Chinatown in Mexico, known today as Chinesca, with annual Chinese New Year celebrations.

Travelers will love wandering this vibrant neighborhood full of unique shops and restaurants showcasing the historic Chinese culture of this gem in the desert.

These 4 Off The Beaten Path U.S. Destinations Are Perfect For An End Of Summer Getaway

Summer never seems long enough. Before you know it, the days will get shorter, the weather will be colder, and the season of sunshine and freedom will end.

With the end of summer approaching, you may feel anxious about taking one last trip before the fall. But you don’t want to go just anywhere. You want to go somewhere relaxing, beautiful, and not crowded.

    Amelia island

While an international trip may sound appealing, many destinations in the U.S. can serve as the perfect summer escape.

The islands of Hawaii, off the coast of Florida, South Carolina, and Oregon, are home to little-known places that can be your end-of-summer getaway.

Green hills with a blue water lagoon

    1. Molokai, Hawaii

Hawaii is littered with tourists this time of year. While that may be true for the big island, Molokai is a small island that is not on the radar for most tourists.

One of the reasons why it’s not a highly visited place is because the people and government of Molokai don’t want it to be. The island has resisted chain hotels, cruise ships, and other large-scale tourism.

    pebble beach with blue water

While it may seem like they are anti-outsiders, this 38-mile-long island is trying to attract a specific type of visitor.

Instead of the tourists who only want to take photos, the island invites tourists that are curious. People that want to learn about the culture and land they are visiting.

The people of the island want travelers that will be respectful during their visits and mindful of their impact on the island.

humpback whale jumpinh out of the water

If you’re an ideal guest, you’ll enjoy the island’s beauty without the typical problems of tourism, such as overcrowding, traffic, and pollution.

In a landscape mostly made up of cliffs, the island is home to Pāpōhaku Beach, one of Hawaii’s largest white sand beaches.

You can also enjoy the Halawa Valley tour that takes you to Moaula Falls and passes through an ancient Hawaiian village.

    2. Edisto Island, South Carolina

While major cities in South Carolina focus on commercial development, Edisto Island is the opposite.

A place of natural beauty and over five miles of beaches, this charming island offers visitors an escape from the big city life.

The island focuses on preserving its family-oriented lifestyle. In addition, there is much support given to local artists and business owners.

Path way leading to the ocean with at sunset

On the island, you won’t find brand-name stores. Instead, you’ll find locally owned clothing boutiques, gift shops, and bookstores. You can also visit local crafters at the Bay Creek Arts and Crafts Market.

Edisto Island is a place that can bring you back to simpler times.

    3. Tillamook Coast, Oregon

As things start to heat up towards the end of summer, the natural inclination is to head to the water. And one of those places you’ll want to visit is Tillamook Coast in Oregon.

The main attraction is the surf, yet, the coast offers a variety of other water activities. Kayaking, rafting, fishing, crabbing, and clamming are great ways to explore the water without the crowds.

When you’re all cooled off from the water activities, Tillamook has a ton of culture and history to explore. You can visit the Tillamook Air Museum to experience history by viewing blimp hangars from World War II.

Coast with cliffs with green trees above crashing waves

One of Tillamook’s biggest highlights is its coastal ride on a historic steam locomotive. On this ride, you’ll get stunning ocean and bay views.

    4. Amelia Island, Flordia

Everyone knows the Florida Keys is one of the state’s biggest attractions. Yet, looking past the typical destination, you can find Amelia Island.

With 13 miles of beaches, you won’t have any problem finding a place to pitch your umbrella in the sand. This island is known for its tranquil island vibes.

Overseas highway in the florida keys

From May through October, the island is a host to one of the many wonders of nature. Turtles will come to the shore to lay their eggs during these months.

While you’re visiting, you can take part in nest excavation. Once the baby turtles have emerged from their nests and crawled to the ocean, selected volunteers come in when the nests are empty.

Volunteers then excavate the nests for leftover materials, unhatched eggs, and baby turtles who may need help making it to the sea.

6 Underrated European Cities For An Affordable Getaway This Summer

    [ad_1]

    Last Updated

When it comes to affordable vacations, Europe might not be the first place to spring to mind.

Yes, many destinations in Europe are expensive, and with rising costs for nearly all aspects of travel these days, they appear to be growing increasingly so.

Young female tourist with camera and backpack photographing Cloth Hall in the old city center of Krakow (1)

The good news is that the vast and varied continent of Europe offers a wide variety of places to visit, many of which can be considered quite affordable. Budget travelers and backpackers know where to go for low prices on hostel beds, cheap beers, and everything in between.

But, affordable doesn’t have to apply solely to the backpacker crowd. Knowing where to go for lower-priced getaways, and how to travel around are some major ways to save on your next European vacation.

With their annual City Costs Barometer, The UK Post Office has compared city costs across the continent and determined the best deals for a city break getaway.

By looking at typical costs tourists face in twelve categories, such as accommodation, meals, sightseeing, and transportation, the report found the European cities that were the best overall value for a weekend city getaway.

Panoramic view of Warsaw in a summer day n Poland

To calculate the weekend cost for each destination, the following items are factored in:

    • Cup of coffee at a cafe/bar
    • Bottle of beer at a cafe/bar
    • Soft drink at a cafe/bar
    • Glass of wine at a cafe/bar
    • 3-course evening meal for 2 people with a house bottle of wine
    • Return transport to/from the airport
    • 48-hour travel card
    • Sightseeing city bus tour
    • Top tourist heritage attraction
    • Top museum
    • Top art gallery
    • 2 nights at a 3-star accommodation (weekend rates/2ppl)

While the number one spot went to the world-famous Lisbon, the list includes many culture-packed Eastern European choices where you can get the most for your money.

Here Are 6 Underrated European Cities For An Affordable Getaway This Summer:

    Vilnius

Coming in at a close second after Lisbon on the list for the cheapest city break in Europe is the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius. This charming and historic city is underrated and off the beaten track by most tourists, and those that do make the trip find themselves pleasantly surprised with all there is to experience here.

Not only is Vilnius a great place to soak up some culture, but it’s cheap as well, with a weekend trip coming in at around $280.00 for two people.

    Krakow

In addition to making a top spot in the cheapest places in Europe list, Poland’s beloved Krakow also ranks high as one of the top places to visit this year. People love Krakow for its storybook setting, not to mention its history and architecture.

A weekend exploring Krakow will run you around $310.00 currently, and not to mention, you can hop on the train and visit another on this list easily, Warsaw.

    Riga

The Baltic country of Latvia has been getting a lot of attention recently from travelers in the know, although it still remains somewhat under the radar with the masses. There are a lot of reasons to love Latvia, and its capital of Riga especially, but affordability is one major factor to visit.

According to the figures gathered by the UK Post Office for their study, a weekend in Riga will set you back only about $353.00, which is much more affordable than the majority of European cities.

    Zagreb

Croatia and cheap are not usually words that you would associate with each other, with the seaside country boasting some notoriously beautiful and expensive cities such as Split and Dubrovnik.

However, move away from the coast up to the northwest of the country, and you can find yourself in Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia. A weekend exploring the streets and history of this beautiful city will cost about $410.00.

    Budapest

As one of the countries in Europe where the U.S. dollar will go the furthest right now, thanks to favorable exchange rates, Hungary should see a tourism boom this year. Not that this stunning country has been a secret, but in the past, it’s mostly been visited by those on the European backpacking trail.

The capital city of Budapest draws travelers in with its old-world charm and keeps them there with the low cost of travel expenditures. Budapest’s overall weekend cost is the same as Zagreb’s, around $410.00 for the weekend.

Aerial view of the parliament in Hungary at sunset

    Warsaw

In line with Budapest and Zagreb’s $410.00 price point, you can also find Poland’s capital city of Warsaw. With over 50 museums to enjoy, this once-overlooked city is having a bit of a post-pandemic cultural tourism boom.

Most of Warsaw was destroyed in World War II, and the blend of architecture that stands now is a blend of original and reconstructed, making it an interesting place to sightsee.

With a price point much lower than other European capital cities, it’s clear that Warsaw will give travelers great value.

With many Americans gearing up to travel this summer, it’s time to start thinking about which places will be the busiest.

More and more people are reporting that they are planning on traveling closer to home this year to both save on costs and also avoid the anticipated headaches that summer 2023 air travel will bring.

Woman sitting looking at summer mountain view. Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, Colorado, USA.

Luckily America has no shortage of places to visit without leaving the country, and to give you some ideas, the popular travel planning website Trips To Discover has ranked the best place to visit in each state this summer.

The list includes an ideal summer destination from each of the 50 states, meaning you can discover a new place without having to go too far, thus avoiding all the airport traffic, delays, lost baggage, and all the other stressors that come with flying nowadays.

Red covered bridge in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

The destinations were chosen based on a variety of factors, including the summer weather quality, the number of attractions on offer for the whole family, and the ease of access to nature and outdoor activities.

While some of the locations on the list are ones that are well-known, there are others that are more off the beaten track. Including all six of the regions within the United States, here are 6 destinations that offer a unique getaway for a summer trip.

    New England: Conway, New Hampshire

If you venture into New England’s White Mountains, you can find Conway tucked into the rolling green hills.

While the area is worth a visit in any season, a trip here in the summer allows you to go tubing down the Saco River and swim in the area’s lakes.

The downtown is delightful, and you can take a ride on the Conway Scenic Railroad’s old-fashioned trains to take in the views. Shopping, dining, and outdoor attractions also win people over who visit.

    Mid-Atlantic: Saranac Lake, New York

The Adirondack Mountains in Northern New York are one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s best places to get away and into some epic nature.

Only about four hours from Manhattan and two hours south of Montreal, this natural paradise isn’t actually as hard to reach as you might expect.  The Adirondack area is home to around 3,000 lakes, with the most famous being Lake Placid.

While Lake Placid is a great destination, it tends to get crowded in the prime months, so keep going about 10 miles northwest until you find the serene Saranac Lake. With fewer crowds, lower prices, and a more local feel, this is the unique place to get away this summer that you have been thinking of.

    The South:  Beaufort, South Carolina

You can find the charming and historic waterfront town of Beaufort located only about an hour and a half’s drive from the lovely Charleston, making it a perfect day or overnight trip.

If some areas of this town might look familiar, it’s because much of Forrest Gump was filmed here.

With moss-draped trees and huge historic houses lining the streets, this is a gem tucked away for those who are lucky enough to discover.

Spend your time wandering along the streets, taking in the antebellum architecture, visiting the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, and sampling some fantastic Low-country cuisine.

    The Midwest: Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

If you are looking for a unique place to visit in the American midwest, Wisconsin Dells is worth consideration.

Known as the “Waterpark Capital of the World”, Wisconsin Dells has more waterparks per capita than any other place in the world.

While the waterparks are a huge draw here, making this a great destination for families, there are other reasons to visit this unique destination as well. The rock formations jutting along the river make for some epic scenery, and duck tours, horse rides, canyon, and river walks are all options to help you navigate this interesting terrain.

    The Southwest: Taos, New Mexico

As the only Native American community to be designated both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark, Taos Pueblo is absolutely worth a visit in the Southwest.

Nicknamed “The Soul Of The Southwest”, Taos charms visitors with its many galleries, amazing rafting, local cultures, and of course, the landmark sights.

A visit here can let you explore the spiritual traditions of the region and the fine arts and unique culture.

Ancient City of Taos, New Mexico USA.

    The West: Estes Park, Colorado

Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park is a fantastic destination to visit, and the bonus is that you can spend your downtime in the small mountain town of Estes Park.

Enjoy your visit as you spend the days wandering downtown, fly-fishing, spotting the vast wildlife, hiking, and many other activities.

Wander the charming downtown streets and the picturesque riverwalk, and use this town as your base for exploring the National Park and surrounding area.

Why This Charming Mexican City Is More Than Just A Weekend Getaway

Many travelers who consider going to Mexico opt for the more trendy destinations over finding somewhere new.

Depending on whether they are looking for a fun beach vacay or wanting to immerse themselves in Mexico’s beautiful culture, they may choose places like Oaxaca, Cancun or Mexico City.

    puebla mexico houses

The latter has become quite a trendy place for travelers in recent years. Those who come to the capital of Mexico will also be in close proximity to an overlooked gem.

Puebla is a city within approximately a 2-hour drive. Those who have already discovered Puebla’s magic often consider it to be a day trip or weekend getaway from Mexico City.

There is so much to explore here, so those who have only stayed for a short time are cutting themselves short on what this charming, historical city has to offer.

    The City Of Puebla

    cathedral in puebla

A simple search online about Puebla will result in multiple weekend guides and how to take the perfect Instagram photo with the backdrop of Puebla’s infamous volcano, Popocatépetl.

The problem with that is there is more to experience in just two full days! The endless food options would be almost impossible to take in on a 48-hour trip.

Puebla is also the name of the state, but the city of Puebla is the main gastronomical hub of the region.

This area of Mexico is home to some of the most authentic traditional Mexican cuisine known to man.

According to the Minister of Tourism in Puebla, “The state’s capital is the second municipality with more museums in Mexico, and gastronomy is our heritage with Chiles en Nogada, Rib Mole, and Mole poblano, among many others.”

    chiles en nogada dish

To truly get a taste of all the culinary offerings here, one would need to stay for an extended time.

Two of the more common food items on local menus are Mole Poblano and Chiles en Nogada, which might have foodie travelers salivating from looks alone.

Mole Poblano typically derives from turkey, chocolate and a mix of various peppers totaling dozens of ingredients.

Chiles en Nogada is a vibrant dish that is a signature staple of Puebla. It is made from locally sourced ingredients, such as poblano peppers and a unique sauce made from nuez de Castilla.

    mole poblano dish

It might be advised to wander the colorful streets of the city before eating as it would be extremely hard not to indulge in the spectacular flavors of Puebla.

The city itself is a proud historical destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it was a highly important piece of Mexican history dating back all the way to the 16th century.

Back then, over 280 temples were constructed to satisfy various sects of religious beliefs. Travelers will find some beautifully preserved architecture still standing today across the region.

    municipal building in puebla mexico

Visitors to the city will find a vast array of comfortable hotel options ranging from high-end hotels to remodeled boutique accommodations in the historic buildings.

Many are located near the city’s main museums to gain a better understanding of how Puebla came to be what it is today.

    Beyond The City Limits

While there is nothing wrong with spending the majority of time in the city of Puebla, travelers would be remised if they didn’t take time to explore some of the region’s Pueblos Magicos.

There are 10 Magical Towns worth seeing:

    • Huauchinango
    • Xicotepec de Juarez
    • Chignahuapan
    • Cuetzalan
    • Cholula
    • Atlixco
    • Zacatlan
    • Tlatlauquitepec
    • Tetela
    • Pahuatlan
    volcano in puebla mexico

Each town is unique in its own way and acceptable for all ages. Cholula might be the most well-known as it sits toward the base of the picturesque Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl volcanoes.

Sadly, there is no Cholula hot sauce factory to tour as the popular condiment has no relation to the town.

What travelers will find is a small community happy to have them visit and be able to explore important landmarks, such as pyramid ruins and numerous colonial temples.

Many visitors come for the scenic nature of the state of Puebla. Not only is there gorgeous scenery outside the city limits, but travelers will also find the culinary scene is still superb on the outskirts.

    travelers sipping mezcal in mexico

Those wanting a taste of neighboring Oaxaca can easily double dip in Mexican culture through this loophole.

Tour guides take travelers to the nature reserve of Tehuacán-Cuicatlán, a region neighboring the state of Oaxaca.

Here, tourists will get to experience expansive food options. Through Mezcal Aislados, traditional alcoholic beverages as well.

Mezcal is a pillar of Oaxacan culture. Travelers can get a taste of the agave-based booze without stepping foot in Oaxaca while also taking in Puebla’s natural beauty.

Spring break might be over but we’ve still got a while to go before spring itself is finished.

For those in North America, the first official day of summer 2023 is June 21st, meaning you still have over 2 months of spring to enjoy (and/or get through), depending on where you are.

Girl walking in Magnolia gardens Charleston South Carolina

The good news is that the time period of late April and May is known as the shoulder season for most of America, which means it’s a great time for domestic travel.

So, if you can get the time off from work (or can swing a workcation or even a hush trip), a trip within the U.S. will come with a lower price tag than one taken during popular spring break travel time or the upcoming busy summer season.

Travel this summer is projected to be busy around the world, and America is no exception.

A large number of Americans are planning on traveling this summer, and many are looking to stay close to home.

This increase in interest means higher prices across the board, so taking advantage of a late spring getaway makes more sense this year than any.

So now that you know why you should be going on a late spring getaway, where should you go?

Well, luckily for you, social media company Ayrshare has compiled a list of the most popular places to travel this spring in the U.S., according to their popularity on TikTok.

By looking at the top 40 spring destinations in the U.S., each location’s hashtag view on TikTok was then factored in to generate a list of the top cities for spring travel.

Average spring weather was also taken into consideration after the rankings were determined.

Based on research by Ayrshare, here are the top trending travel destinations in the U.S. for this spring, according to TikTok:

    Houston, Texas

    • TikTok Views: 4.8 Billion

With an average spring temperature in the high seventies and around 14 days of rain, the weather in Houston allows for a decent spring getaway.

We all know Texas can (and does) get hot in the summer, so checking out some of its beloved cities is a bit more enjoyable in the spring.

With average spring weather not too much different from Houston, Austin comes next on the list of great spring destinations.

There are loads of reasons that Austin is a good idea for a spring trip; from enjoying the many wildflowers that bloom to taking in some NASCAR, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

    Washington, District of Columbia

    • TikTok Views: 2.1 Billion

With an average spring temperature in the mid-sixties, Washington D.C. isn’t as warm as the first two contenders, but since there’s so much to do there, it still ranks quite highly on the list.

From strolling the cherry blossoms to wandering around the many monuments and museums, it’s all definitely more enjoyable than a visit in the middle of summer, when the temperatures spike.

@adventuressashley After seeing that early Cherry Blossom blooms were happening, I make the decision to make an early and unplanned trip to Washington D.C. to catch these beauties! Did you know DC is under 4 hours from NYC? Making it the perfect getaway for 2 nights or even a long weekend! Can’t wait to be back shortly to catch the next wave. Orlando, Florida

    • TikTok Views: 1.6 Billion

Since Orlando is one of the most searched destinations this summer, it should come as too much of a surprise to see it trending on TikTok as well.

Most Americans know Orlando as a pretty solid choice for a getaway any time of year, and spring is no exception.

The spring break crowds have gone, and the weather is perfect for some major thrills at the theme parks.

    Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

    • TikTok Views: 1.5 Billion

Long gone are the spring break partygoers, but what remains is the great weather and over 60 miles of coastline for you to enjoy.

Myrtle Beach starts to warm up quite nicely in late spring, and come May, the temperature is perfect for some serious beach lounging.

Now is the time to come if you like it hot but not too hot, and not nearly as crowded as it will be in the summer.

Come to witness the thawing of the snow and watch the landscape turn lush and green before your eyes with wildflowers and trees.

Denver is known to be getting more and more pricey for accommodation, and a visit in the shoulder season will save you some serious cash.

Fancy a trip to Japan to see their famed cherry blossoms but can’t swing the airfare?

Portland might be a runner-up, as the Portland Japanese Garden is one of the most authentic of its kind outside of Japan.

Aside from flowers (of which there are many more to love besides the cherry blossoms), Portland comes alive in the springtime with festivals, waterfalls, and many events for everyone to enjoy.

    • TikTok Views: 409.4 Million

With an average springtime temperature of just over 70 degrees, Charleston is another city that is getting warm but not yet too hot to enjoy its charm this time of year.

Wander the storied streets and take in the wisteria that covers the grand front porches.

Events such as the North Charleston Arts Fest also take place in the spring, so make sure to check the event calendar to take advantage of some fun.

    Los Angeles, California

    • TikTok Views: 242.5 Million

With only an average of 5 rainfall days in the spring, Los Angeles is easily the top pick on this list for those who are looking to avoid some raindrops.

The shoulder seasons of spring and fall also bring clean and crisp air, as you are less likely to be subjected to the smog that can take over in the summer months.

Witness the blooming of Tinseltown and take in the flowers, or head to the beach or amusement parks. Either way, you are sure to have a good time.

    Seattle, Washington

    • TikTok Views: 242 Million

As another top searched-for destination for flights, Seattle’s popularity on social media shouldn’t shock anyone.

Travelers love to come here in the spring before it gets too hot or crowded with summer tourists.

And surprisingly enough, the Emerald City is a good choice weather-wise for a spring trip, only averaging 8 days of rain this time of the year.

Why This Underrated Region Is Perfect For A European Summer Getaway

    Share The Article

    Last Updated

Spending a week or two in the South of France or the Italian Riviera or touring some of Europe’s most famous capitals may sound like the perfect summer vacation.

And while summer in Europe is a dream for many travelers, the reality is often not quite as idyllic as you might imagine.

    Castle in Latvia

Between record-breaking 100-degree heat waves, extreme crowds, and skyrocketing prices on everything from hotels to rental cars to activities, summer in Europe can end up feeling more like a nightmare than a dream vacation.

However, if you’re willing to go off the beaten path, you can experience an incredible summer vacation in Europe with low crowds, affordable prices, and mild weather.

    Tallinn Estonia

Why You Should Visit The Baltics This Summer

The Baltics are a region in northeastern Europe consisting of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

These three countries on the Baltic Sea often fly under the radar for tourists coming to Europe, but they each have a lot to offer and can be combined into a great summer vacation.

Here are the top reasons to plan a trip to the Baltics this summer:

Top 5 Travel Insurance Plans For 2023 Starting At $10 Per Week

    Fun Capital Cities

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania each have capital cities worth visiting.

Tallinn, Estonia is perhaps the most picturesque Baltic capital, located on the Baltic Sea and famous for its walled Old Town. For a unique day trip, you can also take a two-hour ferry to Helsinki, Finland.

Riga, Latvia is another beautiful coastal city known for being a cultural hub and for its art, nouveau architecture, and medieval Old Town.

And Vilnius, Lithuania is another quaint and charming Baltic capital located inland.

Hot air balloons rise above Vilinus Lithuania

You can explore these capital cities without the high prices and extreme crowds that more popular European destinations like Rome or Paris experience during the summer.

    Affordable Prices

Traveling in the Baltics is much less expensive than traveling in Western Europe. While you won’t find quite as cheap of prices as you might in Eastern Europe or the Balkans, you’ll still find that things like accommodation, food, activities, and transportation are quite affordable.

According to the travel budgeting website BudgetMyTrip, here’s how much you can expect to spend per day in the Baltics on a mid-range vacation:

    • Estonia: $89
    • Latvia: $99
    • Lithuania: $80
    Tallinn Estonia Old Town

    Get Back To Nature

Aside from cities, the Baltic region also has plenty of beautiful nature on offer to visitors.

While they may not have the same “wow factor” as the beaches of the Mediterranean or the Adriatic, the Baltics do have laidback beaches perfect for a relaxing summer getaway.

Pärnu in Estonia, Jurmala in Latvia, and Palanga in Lithuania are some of the most popular and picturesque beaches in the Baltic region.

    Jurmala Beach

Estonia’s Matsalu National Park is also known for being one of the best bird-watching destinations in Europe, while Kemeri National Park, just outside of Riga, is home to pristine forests and bogs.

    Mild Summer Weather

Finally, the Baltics are a great summer destination in Europe because of the mild weather this region enjoys. While winters are unbearably frigid, summers are pleasant and mild.

The average low and high temperatures in July for these countries are:

    • Estonia: 55° F / 71° F
    • Latvia: 57° F / 75° F
    • Lithuania: 57° F / 74° F
    Lithuania island

Many other popular destinations in Europe, including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Italy have been experiencing record-breaking heat waves in recent summers, with temperatures soaring as high as 100° F to 110° F.

If the idea of extreme heat isn’t appealing to you, traveling to the Baltics during the summer is a great way to beat the heat and enjoy mild weather.

  • Top 5 Destinations in the U.S. for a Cheap Spring Break Getaway

Top 5 Destinations in the U.S. for a Cheap Spring Break Getaway

Spring is in the air, and that can only mean that spring break is nearly upon us. The very mention of this popular vacation might bring back memories of MTV beach houses, college students living it up, swim-up bars, and spending endless amounts of money on questionable amounts of alcohol. Or perhaps you prefer a more laidback vibe, and the idea of enjoying a spring getaway at a less frenzied pace sounds more appealing to you.

With flight costs notoriously expensive around popular spring break times, why not stay closer to home? These five US cities are all easily reachable by domestic flights, have a major airport, and are serviced by multiple airlines at different price points, meaning no long-haul flights, layovers, or missed connections. These destinations are all well connected to other U.S. regions and reachable by bus, car, or even train in some cases — if you prefect to avoid flying altogether.

Here are the top 5 destinations in the US for a cheap spring break getaway for both the party-seekers and chill-chasers:

    Panama City, Florida

No spring break list would be complete without mentioning this “Spring Break Capital of The World.” Constantly ranked as Florida’s top spot for beachgoers, Panama City has all the ingredients for a memorable spring break. While Florida offers numerous cities and beaches for those looking for a spring break getaway, Panama City is known to be one of the most affordable spots in Florida.

At the time of writing, a search on Airbnb for a weekly rental in April (for 2 people) is about $600.

In addition to having accommodation coming in well under other Florida destinations, Panama City also offers activities day and night at price points that are sure to entice those looking to keep costs down.

Simply strolling and enjoying the white sand beaches is one free way to spend your day. If you are very committed, you can even pack a lunch to save costs on the many lively beach restaurants that tempt you in.

Or, if you prefer, head inland to Pitt and Sylvan Springs, where you can splash about in a tube or kayak or wander the trails and enjoy the cooler temperatures of the park. Panama City also is a great choice for both families and the younger crowd, as there are options for everyone here.

While prices may have risen in recent times, Panama City still offers a chance for a spring break on the beach, but at a lower price tag than many other US destinations.

    Outer Banks, North Carolina

Looking for a more mellow beach destination? A visit to the Outer Banks might be just what you seek.

A trip to these barrier islands can be cost-efficient as they are located within driving distance from many east coast areas, not only saving you money on flying but also the headache of air travel during this time of year.

Spring brings warm and mild temperatures to the area, and since the actual tourist season hasn’t started yet, the beaches are yours to explore. Climb the dunes along the ocean, and take in the views. An Outer Banks spring break also means that you can take advantage of the many seafood choices that occur in Spring.

    Outer banks sand dunes

After being closed all winter, most restaurants start opening up at this time, meaning it shouldn’t be too hard to get a prime table and prime prices.

While a trip to the Outer Banks can get pricy during the summer, the average weekly price in April for an Airbnb for 2 people is currently about $700.

Remembering that you can cook in for most meals and spend days aimlessly combing the beach for free, this destination surely deserves a spot on the budget spring break getaway list.

dock and sunset sky outerbanks north carolina

    New Orleans, Louisiana

A spring break getaway to New Orleans could be the perfect way to spice up your season and be the best remedy for the dreary March and April weather that tends to linger about for far too long.

Spring is the time to enjoy New Orleans without the muggy oppressive heat that summer cooks up. In addition to its warm and sunny weather, New Orleans is just overflowing with culture around every corner. One major attraction here is simply strolling and enjoying the charming streets of the French Quarter.

During March and April, it’s possible to find an Airbnb for 7 nights in the Big Easy for between $400-$500 (price based on 2 people). In addition, New Orleans is being added as a destination for most budget airlines, with flights from major US cities as low as $30 one way.

One main reason to head down to the big easy is for the food scene. Any foodie will tell you that New Orleans is a culinary destination in itself, but eating your way around this city’s famous restaurants might not be the cheapest way to spend your spring break. However, a visit at this time of year can land you in the middle of any of the city’s famous music and food festivals, meaning you can try more dishes without breaking the bank.

    street lights in new orleans

    Daytona Beach, Florida

It’s no shock to see Daytona Beach on any spring break list, as it’s been a classic favorite for years. While this destination does see higher prices in spring break time across the board, there are still ways to save on a trip to this party capital.

Hotels and apartments have never been more plentiful, meaning those who look can find lower-priced options. The area is well connected with taxis and shuttles, and most restaurants and bars are overflowing with special deals every day of the week.

Finding an apartment here in March or April can be done with an average weekly price as low as $400 for 2 people, and many cater to larger groups as well.

Daytona beach florida view from above the ocean

While flights to Daytona Beach airport are higher at this time of year, you can save money by flying into Orlando and either taking a shuttle or renting a car to reach Daytona Beach instead.

For example, New York to Daytona Beach for a week in March could cost you about $300 with a layover in Cleveland. The same dates but heading to Orlando are currently only about $100. Even if you factor in a shuttle at approximately $40 each way, that still saves a big chunk of change.

Not to mention if you were planning on renting a car anyway for your trip, Orlando might make a much more budget-conscious choice, depending on your starting point, of course.

    lifeguard

    Washington, D.C.

Partying poolside all day not your thing? What about a trip to Washington, D.C. to take in some culture instead? Thinking of a visit to this national capital in the spring should immediately bring your mind to one thing-  cherry blossoms. This is the time of year to plan the perfect outfits and go take advantage of the beautiful backdrop that the city’s blooming cherry trees offer.

You might be surprised to see this city included on a list of budget-friendly spring break getaways, but the wide range of accommodations that are available in various neighbors and various price points makes finding something affordable not very difficult.

A beautiful reflection of cherry blossoms and the monument in Washington DC, Alaska's newest destination from San Diego

For example, many budget travelers choose to stay across the River in Virginia and commute via subway into the city center. A search on Airbnb yields many good choices, from guest suites to entire lofts, many coming in under $600 for a week.

Perfect for history buffs, D.C. is a good choice for spring break travel, and wandering among the monuments is much more manageable than doing so in the blazing summer heat. If the spring weather gets a bit drizzly or chilly, pop into one (or all) of the city’s famous museums, from the Smithsonian to the National Gallery.

The sheer amount of free activities in D.C. is another reason it can be considered a budget destination. There is so much more to do in Washington, D.C. than you might think, making it perfect for travelers of all ages. In addition to being a hit with history fans, Washington D.C. is also perfect for foodies.

The impressive food and drink scene here offers something for travelers of all tastes and budgets. To explore more off-the-beaten path and usually lower price options, follow a local publication. They are always in the know with tips and deals, helping travelers explore the local food and drink scene without breaking the bank.

5 Reasons To Visit The Cayman Islands For Your Winter Getaway

Are you looking for the perfect Caribbean getaway this winter? There are many destinations in the Caribbean to choose from, but here’s why the Cayman Islands should be at the top of your list!

    Aerial view of cayman

    Where Are The Cayman Islands?

The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. Located in the western part of the Caribbean Sea, there are three islands that make up the Cayman Islands.

Grand Cayman is the largest island, followed by Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman is the smallest island.

    Why Visit The Cayman Islands?

The Cayman Islands are one of the best destinations in the Caribbean.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable tropical getaway this winter, we’ll outline why the Cayman Islands should be at the top of your list:

The best time to visit is from December until April, when you can enjoy beautiful warm and sunny weather.

Here are the top reasons to visit the Cayman Islands:

    Cayman Islands aerial view

    1. Gorgeous Beaches

One of the main reasons to visit the Cayman Islands is its beaches. Any beach bum will be thrilled with the stunning beaches here.

Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman is regularly named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, thanks to its soft white sand and clear azure water. Although the name is a bit deceiving (it’s actually only 5.6 miles long), this beach is by far the most popular in the Cayman Islands.

Cayman Kai on the north side of Grand Cayman is another beautiful beach with fewer crowds, while Sandy Point is known for being the best beach on Little Cayman.

    2. Amazing Diving

Another one of the biggest reasons to visit the Cayman Islands is for its amazing scuba diving. If you like to dive, this is a bucket list destination with some of the best dive sites in the Caribbean.

Grand Cayman is the most popular island for scuba diving because it’s the largest and has many diverse dive sites, but Little Cayman is renowned for having the best diving of all. It’s worth the extra effort to get to Little Cayman in order to explore its vibrant underwater world.

    3. Less Development

Compared to many destinations in the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands have not seen as much development. Grand Cayman is the most developed island, particularly the western end where Seven Mile Beach is, but the northern and eastern parts of the island are more wild and pristine.

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are even less developed and only accessible by flight from Grand Cayman. However, if you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path Caribbean destination, these two islands are perfect choices.

Beach In The Cayman Islands, Caribbean Sea

    4. Flight Connections

Getting to the Cayman Islands is easy. The only international airport is located on Grand Cayman, the largest island, but there are more than a dozen nonstop flights from cities across the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Due to its location, Grand Cayman is a short flight from many places in the United States and can be reached in three hours or less from the East Coast.

    5. Something For Everyone

The Cayman Islands has something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach vacation or an active scuba diving trip.

Grand Cayman has the largest resorts to choose from and is home to the famous Seven Mile Beach, as well as some great scuba diving sites.

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are less developed and also offer amazing scuba diving. Cayman Brac is also known for deep-sea fishing, while Little Cayman has diverse wildlife, including rare and endangered species.
