Saudi Arabia didn’t open its borders to tourists until September 2019.

Given that the world shut down due to the pandemic just a few months later, that means that Saudi Arabia is a relatively new country to the international tourism stage.

Travelers who think they’ve been everywhere and seen everything are unlikely to have been to Saudi Arabia, and that makes it an incredibly appealing destination for seasoned explorers.

Saudi Arabia is a hidden gem, and that it was hidden for so long only makes it more interesting. It’s a treasure trove of rich cultural experiences alongside breathtaking landscapes and an exciting destination to explore.

Stretching across Saudi Arabia, you will find the Rub’ al Khali desert, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.

It is one of the sacred duties of Muslims to show generosity to guests, and this is definitely reflected in the way that travelers are treated in Saudi Arabia. Whether you are arriving in a hotel or in a local market, you will be greeted warmly.

As an added bonus, most people working in the tourism industry in Saudi Arabia speak excellent English, so the language barrier is less of an obstacle than many people might think.

A Spiritual Spot

It would be remiss not to mention that religious tourism is one of the main reasons many travelers choose to visit Saudi Arabia. Mecca and Medina, two of Islam’s holiest cities, are both located in Saudi Arabia.

While Europe’s status as one of the most popular travel destinations on Earth hasn’t changed, there’s been a huge shift in the dynamics of the continent’s tourism industry, with old-school hubs garnering a reputation as tourist traps and smaller, lesser-known countries emerging as the region’s trendiest destinations.

That’s exactly what the latest Statista report on European travel showed, too.

The German data-gathering company set out to discover the fastest-growing regions within the continent, and travelers have made their preferences pretty clear – Central and Eastern Europe are leading the way by a large margin.

Five countries, in particular, are drawing in visitors like never before:

Poland

Poland has always been considered one of those great, budget-friendly destinations that fly a bit under the radar, but if these recent numbers are anything to go by, that’s about to change pretty soon.

Travelers are growing tired of the suffocating crowds of Paris and the littered attractions of Venice, and, in contrast, Poland’s gorgeous landscapes and undiscovered charm seem like a breath of fresh air.

Whether you’re planning to explore the gothic, baroque, and neoclassical buildings of Warsaw (which, frankly, are not too far off from what you’d find in Prague) or the winding streets of Krakow, one thing’s for sure – Poland will exceed even your wildest expectations.

Hungary

Though Hungary is mainly known for its capital, Budapest, the country is currently undergoing a tourism renaissance that extends beyond the wonders that lie on the shores of the iconic Danube River.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot to love about Budapest – from the fairytale-like skyline to St. Stephen’s Basilica and the stunning Buda Castle – but if you’re planning a trip to Hungary, don’t overlook the dreamy countryside, either.

The wine regions of Eger and Tokaj, for example, are the perfect melting pot of warm-hearted people, surreal views, and world-class food.

Czech Republic

It’s places like these where you can truly take in the timeless beauty of the Czech Republic in its most authentic form, so if you’re lucky enough to explore Central Europe anytime soon, make sure to venture beyond the well-trodden paths of Prague.

Georgia

Having welcomed over 7 million international travelers in the past year alone, Georgia has officially left its “off-the-beaten-path” reputation behind.

Travelers coming to Europe are starting to appreciate the country’s warm hospitality, breathtaking landscapes, and unique cultural heritage, probably best experienced through the ancient cave city of Uplistsikhe.

City trippers can still find all of the trendy bars and restaurants in Tbilisi, the capital, whereas those eager to explore the wilderness of the local nature can’t go wrong with a hike through Svaneti.

Romania

When most of us think of Romania, our minds immediately go to the iconic Dracula Castle, which has long been a draw for curious travelers and movie lovers alike.

In reality, though, there’s a lot more to love and admire about this southeastern European country than just the centuries-old tales of vampires – Bucharest, in particular, is one of the most charming, attraction-filled capitals you’ll find in the entire continent.

At a time when most of us are growing tired of the overcrowded squares and endless wait lines, the world’s most visited hotspots (think France, Thailand, Italy, or even the U.S.) are struggling to return to their pre-2020 glory.

Instead, new, trendier destinations are emerging as the world’s fastest-growing hubs.

Thanks to their authentic appeal and untouched views, these countries have not only managed to fully recover in terms of visitor numbers but they’re actually setting new all-time records.

So, if you’re planning on taking an overseas trip in 2024, these are the three hottest destinations you won’t want to miss out on.

3. Greece

The U.S. Travel Association in collaboration with Euromonitor International recently released a report analyzing the tourism competitiveness score of countries from all over the world.

While the analysis had lots of interesting findings that shed some much-needed light into the interests and choices of modern travelers, one of the most fascinating pieces of information to come out of the study was the fact that only three of the world’s biggest destinations managed to outpace their 2019 performance by a notable margin.

Coming in at number 3 – you guessed it – is Greece.

The dreamy Mediterranean nation currently boasts a 105% recovery rate, which should come as no surprise given that reports on its many tourism successes have been abundant.

New all-time tourism records were set twice (1,2) in the past four months alone, and if current trends are anything to go by, this summer will bring in the kind of visitor volume that’ll blow both of these numbers out of the water.

Greece is mostly known for its postcard-worthy beaches, and as someone lucky enough to have experienced their allure firsthand, I can attest that they’re truly as good as they say.

While this next statement might be a bit controversial, I also believe that Greece’s world-class beaches are the best in all of Europe.

There’s no shortage of dreamy, warm-weathered hotspots scattered across the continent – Italy, Spain, and the gorgeous French Riviera all hold a unique type of charm.

However, the types of views and level of variety (not to mention reasonable prices) you’ll find in Greece are truly unmatched.

Beyond its coastal wonders, the country is also famous for its rich cultural and historical background, probably best experienced in the capital, Athens, or my personal favorite, Thessaloniki.

2. Turkey

Turkey has just left behind what can only be described as its most successful tourism year in history, having witnessed a remarkable 109% recovery rate from the pre-pandemic record set in 2019.

Featuring a unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, the country boasts such a unique natural and cultural identity that there’s really no other place like it on Earth.

The sheer number of attractions to explore in Turkey, each as unique as they come, will leave you a bit overwhelmed.

Everything, from the sun-kissed shores of Antalya and the vibrant city scene of Istanbul to the otherworldly atmosphere of Cappadocia (which is frankly unlike anything I’ve seen before), will leave you stunned, enchanted, and a little bit out of breath.

1. The United Arab Emirates

Ever since the Middle East set itself apart as the fastest-growing region in the world, its most coveted hotspots have seen nothing but flocks of curious travelers anxious to see what the fuss is all about.

That’s why it wasn’t really surprising to find out that The United Arab Emirates was crowned “the fastest-growing destination in the world” in the ranking compiled by the U.S. Travel Association.

Home to year-round traveler favorites like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, the country saw an exceptional 117% recovery rate this past year.

While some tend to write most of these cities off as overcrowded tourist traps, the truth of the matter is that there’s a lot to see and admire in the region (yes, including the futuristic skylines).

Beyond the architectural marvels, though, the UAE is also the place where outdoor enthusiasts can explore the rugged beauty of the Hajar Mountains and Jebel Hafeet, while culture seekers can marvel at the Al Fahidi Historic District or the Al Ain Oasis.

Europe is coming out of yet another successful year for tourism, with many of its classic attractions drawing in visitors in flocks of millions.

Greece

While figuring out the exact recipe that contributed to the coastal nation becoming one of Europe’s fastest-growing destinations is impossible, it’s safe to assume the allure of dreamy islands like Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete helped a lot.

The same can be said of iconic sites like the Acropolis of Athens and the ancient theaters of Epidaurus, which not only provide a glimpse into the country’s storied past but also leave visitors in awe with their architectural splendor.

Malta

Nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta stood out this year as one of the region’s best-kept secrets.

Just this week, ACI Europe released its monthly traffic report for October 2023, showcasing the four European destinations that are currently experiencing double-digit growth rates.

1. Ireland

Air travel to Ireland this October grew a whopping 25% from the same period in 2019, proving once again that the stunning European island is finally claiming its well-deserved title as one of the continent’s most popular destinations.

Those who’ve never been here before have no idea just how breathtaking, not to mention fascinatingly diverse, the local scenery is.

From the dramatic cliffs of Moher to the serene beauty of the Ring of Kerry, Ireland offers the type of views that not even the highest-quality camera can do justice to – the sharp contrast in colors, heights, and textures can only truly be appreciated firsthand.

It’s worth noting, though, that a good percentage of the tourists flocking to Ireland are primarily interested in exploring its fascinating history.

The country’s storied past, believed to have originated over 33,000 years ago, can now be (at least partly) relived through the enchanting castles and ancient ruins, of which Blarney, Bunratty, and the Rock of Cashel are all must-sees.

2. Greece

Having had the chance to explore most of the country’s natural, historical, and cultural wonders, I can confidently say that Greece’s reputation as a sunny beach hub doesn’t do it justice.

Between the ancient ruins of Athens, the lively streets of Thessaloniki, and the snow-covered slopes of Falkaro, Greece offers something for every type of tourist all year long.

3. Slovenia

Nestled between Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia, Slovenia has quietly emerged as Europe’s best-kept secret.

Where will the travel hot spots be in 2024? It’s a question we’d all like the answer to.

Will it be Mexico? Somewhere in Europe? If only there was some way we could know the destinations that are growing in popularity.

It turns out there is a way – there’s data out there that shows which destinations are gathering the most interest from travelers as we head into 2024.

A new report from luggage storage app Bounce has tracked the Pinterest travel index for a host of popular destinations to determine a list of the 20 places with the biggest increases in interest over the last year.

There are some intriguing and enticing places on the list, and we have picked out six of our favorites that we think everyone should consider checking out.

Kyoto, Japan

A country that has recently been breaking its own records for tourism, Japan can certainly be considered one of the most trending places to visit.

Kyoto is one of the country’s oldest and most famous cities and was the capital of Japan up until the mid-1800s.

The city itself is packed with stunningly beautiful pagodas and temples, as well as old, cobbled streets where geishas can be spotted.

It’s also the launchpad to two of Japan’s most iconic attractions: the Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its hundreds of red wooden gates, and the Arashiyama bamboo forest.

Hawaii, United States

The tropical islands of Hawaii have long been the perfect winter getaway for Americans.

Merida Breaks Previous Arrival Record

After two years of slower growth as a result of the ongoing Covid pandemic, Mexico shattered all records in 2022 and delivered its best performance yet, surpassing the already historical year of 2019 and recording an increase of 30% in arrival figures. All Mexican destinations, from the mighty Cancun to the under-visited, increasingly trendy Bacalar, benefitted from the surge.

Interestingly, coastal cities are not the only driving force behind Mexico’s 2022 revival: its rich colonial heritage is finally achieving notoriety after being overlooked for years and has greatly contributed to the diversification of tourism. Out of all post-Columbian settlements, however, Merida stands out as one of the fastest-growing destinations.

Last December alone, 328,750 passengers arrived at Merida International, the busiest month yet on record. Year on year, it has grown 10% since the pre-pandemic era, with a total of 3,092,951 passengers recorded throughout 2022. Back in 2019, the city had hit a previous all-time high of 2.8 million. Additionally, the launch of the new Maya Train, a Yucatan-wide project linking all main points of interest in the peninsula by rail, will further boost tourism. From December 2023, travelers will be able to board a Merida-bound train from Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and other resort towns along the coast making it a lot more accessible.

Visiting Merida Is Taking A Journey Back In Time

The capital of the Yucatan state, Merida, is a picture-perfect city with an incredibly well-preserved historical core that wouldn’t look out of place in the Iberian Peninsula of Europe.
