The tricky thing about going somewhere that’s just recently become popular is that while everyone wants to see what the hype is all about, few actually know how to get the most out of the experience.
That’s exactly the case with Sanadë (or Saranda), Albania, a place that’s set to become one of Europe’s trendiest beachy hotspots this summer yet remains unknown to most people.
Where to go? What to see? What’s worth doing? How to stay safe, on a budget, and certain that you’re getting the most out of the experience?
Luckily for you, I’ve already vacationed in Saranda more than a dozen times by this point, and I’m here to share everything I’ve learned during my time in the city, answering all of these questions and more in the process.
So, if you’re planning on exploring some of the most gorgeous places on the Albanian Riviera this summer, this is the only travel guide you need.
The Best Things To Do And See In Saranda
While there’s a lot to be said about the value of flexibility and spontaneity when it comes to a great travel experience, when going somewhere as undiscovered (and unpredictable) as Albania, having at least a faint idea of an itinerary will always work in your favor.
In Saranda, however, you might be overwhelmed by the sheer number of hotels, bars, and restaurants that seem to have taken over the city, and, as you might’ve guessed, while some are genuinely great places where your money goes a long way, others are just tourist traps not with the time of day.
I’m here to help you figure out where it’s actually worth going.
Where To Stay?
There are some truly fantastic hotels in Saranda (places like Hotel Bahamas and Santa Quaranta offer excellent value for the $100-something price tag), but most locals coming to the city opt for short-term rentals instead.
Now, I’ve stayed in beautiful apartments in the city center for just $40 a night, but these are usually unlisted on booking sites and only found through acquaintances, so if you’re looking for that type of price or experience, you’ll want to reach out to a local or another traveler who’s been to Saranda; Facebook groups are great for that kind of thing.
Alternatively, you can always book Airbnbs, which, generally speaking, are far better-managed and decently priced in Europe than they are in the U.S. – cute little 1-bedrooms in the city center rarely cost more than $50 a night.
Where To Eat?
One thing about food in Saranda is that while it’s not anything groundbreaking, it’s reliably tasty.
Below, I’ll list some of the places I’ve found myself turning to time and time again during my time in the city:
L’arte Della Pizza
Balbi 34
Why Not? – Burger Bar
Restaurant Pupi
Oda e Babës
Where To Go At Night?
So, you’ve been to the beach, you had your lunch, and now it’s nighttime and you’re rested, dressed up, and ready to go out – where do you go?
Well, if you’re looking for the classic club experience, Jericho and Vamos are your best bets – during summer there’s a party going on every single night, and unless you’re there during a particularly busy time, you won’t need a reservation, either.
On the other hand, those looking for just a laid-back night with a good drink in their hand can head over to one of my favorite places in the city – Noname Cocktail Bar.
It’s a small, dimly lit place that makes some of the best cocktails in the city for under $10.
The music is great but not so loud that you can’t hear yourself talking, and it’s right on the main promenade so you can watch the people go by and take in that summer sea breeze – it’s always been one of the highlights of my Saranda trips.
The Best Beach In Saranda
The first beaches you’ll see once you set foot in Saranda are the ones located just beside the promenade.
Now, these are called “public beaches,” but you’ll still get charged if you use the sunbeds here, though the price will be notably lower than what you’ll pay in nearby private beaches – between $4 and $5 for a set of two loungers and an umbrella depending on the month.
With that said, bringing your own umbrella and towels/chair is totally acceptable (which is more than what can be said for most private beaches in Saranda), and obviously free.
However, if you’re coming all the way to Albania, spending your days on such a sub-par and poorly organized beach is, in my opinion, a waste of time, especially when there are so many better options.
Sunbeds here are a bit pricier, ranging between $15-$20 a day, but you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck since the beach is clean and well-maintained, the service is great, and the water is just to die for.
There are even small, unoccupied areas where you can lounge around for free, but these are pretty small and rocky, so make sure to weigh out the pros and cons beforehand.
But while this is my favorite beach within Saranda, it still doesn’t hold a candle to the places you’ll find outside the city, so make sure to budget for some day trips during your Albanian summer getaway.
Exploring The Region Beyond The Main City
Saranda is the type of city that never leaves you bored, but there’s just so much to see and do in nearby villages that spending your entire holiday in the city would honestly be a waste of opportunity.
Let’s start with beaches since that’s probably what you’re here to see in the first place.
I’ve loved Pasqyra Beach since the first day I set foot in it.
It was 2013, and this was the first beach I saw that checked every single box – it had padded wooden sunbeds and straw umbrellas, the ground was pebbly but not uncomfortable, there were people there, but it wasn’t too crowded, the sea was as crystal-clear as they come, and I only paid about $7 for a pair of loungers – that’s a great price to pay for what feels like your own tropical paradise.
Granted, that price has gone up to ~$20 now, but not much else has changed.
In fact, this hidden Albanian gem was named the beach with the bluest waters in the world, leaving behind far better-known places.
Other beaches you won’t want to miss out on during your travels in Saranda include Ksamil, Livadi, and Jala, but I’d advise against going to Dhërmi – it truly is gorgeous, but over-tourism has unfortunately turned it into a mismanaged, overpriced mess.
For those who want to enjoy something beyond the daily sunbathing sessions, Syri i Kaltër and Butrint National Archaeological Park are not to be missed.
How To Stay Safe And Avoid Getting Overcharged
What most travelers consider before going to Albania is whether it’s truly safe.
I’m happy to report that Saranda is one of the safest places I’ve vacationed in my life.
Even when I walked home at 3 A.M. from the club, I never felt unsafe, not in the promenade (which was still relatively busy even at that hour), nor in the more quiet neighborhoods I had to walk through on my way back.
Now, I’m not saying what I did was a good idea since normal safety precautions are always necessary (especially if you’re traveling alone), but it goes to show just how safe and non-threatening the atmosphere is here.
One risk you do run, though, is that of getting overcharged.
Locals are notorious for trying to squeeze a few extra bucks from visitors, so my top tips to always get fair prices include:
While the euro has lost quite a bit of power to the Albanian Lek these past few months, 1€ is still not equal to 100 Lek (that’s the exchange rate most businesses quote foreigners), so always use the local currency if possible.
Stick to bigger money exchange places located in the city center, if you can check out online reviews, all the better.
When renting a sunbed, always ask other people or an employee about how much they cost BEFORE you actually sit down, that way, you can make an informed decision and avoid any potential confrontations down the line.
Only go to restaurants where the menus have clearly marked-out prices.
Only use reputable taxi services like Saranda Taxi 715 (+355 69 669 0142) and try to steer away from random drivers trying to poach tourists in the streets.
And with that last bit of information, you’re now 100% ready to make the most out of your Saranda vacation – I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

When you think of Northern Europe, you probably think of the Northern Lights, dog sledding, and cold weather year-round. These are all great things to see during a visit, but what is the best way to get there and experience those things?
Flying into places like Norway is easy enough if you’re coming from North America, but there’s more to a great holiday than just booking a ticket.
You have to plan out when and where you’re going, and that’s easier with a local guide.
Local guides know all the best-kept secrets, like the most interesting hotels, restaurants, and things to do. They won’t bog your trip down with strictly touristy things but will allow you to see the real culture of the country.
I recently went on a trip to Norway with Torunn Tronsvang from Up Norway (a local tour company that tailors your experience based on your interest to the exact tee) and had what can only be described as the most magical time ever.
I stayed at hotels that ranged from all-out luxury to some of the best camping sites and got to enjoy different physical activities like snowshoeing, kayaking, and biking alongside fjords.
Torunn matched exactly what I like to do with my itinerary — creating an unforgettable experience I wish to emulate every time I travel. The next time you’re looking to travel to Norway, consider using Up Norway. They take on the burden of planning and ensure you have the best time possible without having to plan every detail yourself.
Find out why Norway is best experienced with a local guide:
The first leg of the trip was flying into Oslo, the capital of Norway, on Norwegian Airlines. The airline is Scandinavia’s second-largest airline, and coming from Barcelona, Spain, where springtime was in full effect, I was not expecting to see snow or feel cold brushes of wind every few seconds.
This total contrast surprised me but gave me a better appreciation for breaking the norm. Springtime in Norway is very different from springtime in places like North America or Southern Europe, and that’s part of why it’s unique.
You can still enjoy gorgeous snowy hikes and cozy saunas.
Arriving at the Sommerro, located in the hear of Oslo, I was amazed at how the hotel had recreated the interior to resemble its art deco past. Coming from places like Miami Beach, Mexico City, and Paris, I was amazed that the art deco movement from the 1920s had reached Oslo.
The building was the former headquarters of Oslo’s electric company and was built sometime in the 1930s. Each room had strong notes of art deco-inspired motifs, like a glass chandelier adorned with palm tree leaves that sat directly in the middle of the room.
While we only stayed there for two nights, I could appreciate the amenities, like the Ekspedisjonshallen dining hall, which had a bar directly in the middle with a giant original art deco fresco behind it. Dishes like truffle pasta hit the spot and, slowly, made me realize Norway was also a foodie destination.
You can’t experience Northern Europe properly without staying in a snowy mountain lodge. Our second stop of the trip was the quaint Skåbu Mountain Lodge.
It was essentially a winter wonderland located in the small village of Skåbu, known as Norway’s oldest town and the highest settlement in Northern Europe.
The hotel was built from an old grocery store and was a centerpiece for the entire community. Staying there made me understand social sustainability on a more personal level.
Social sustainability means ensuring companies preserve and maintain the community that was initially there. The owners at Skåbu were adamantly invested in relationships with the district.
This was showcased to us when we explored all the different areas where locals could show off their businesses.
On day two, Up Norway arranged snowshoe hiking and dog sledding. While my pups were a little slower than the rest, I could appreciate the scenery in what many would consider a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
It felt like I had stepped into a wardrobe and was transported to Narnia.
Snowy mountain hills surrounded both sides of me, and every so often, I would make a sharp turn exposing a frozen fjord in the distance. The sun made the snow glitter, and each tree had a fresh layer of snow on it.
We had some traditional Norwegian food during dinner that blew my socks off. Dishes like a rack of lamb from wild sheep with potato puree from head chef Lukasz B. Socha were so delicious that it made me want to have seconds.
Who would think that Norway had some of the best food in Europe?
Torunn from Up Norway then escorted us to our next stay, which would be to the beautiful Storfjord Hotel. Nestled on a hill facing Glomset Bay, it could only be described as a woodsy romantic fantasy.
Each room resembled a log cabin, and most were facing the bay giving the guest the most fantastic view each sunrise. If undisturbed, the water mirrored the sky, and tall mountains with snowy tops peered from behind the bay.
Up Norway arranged a kayak tour of the bay, and this was another example of the unique ways a traveler can capture Norway’s natural beauty.
Our last stop would be my favorite property.
Located on the edge of Norangsfjord and facing a fjord with two opposing giant mountains on each side, the Union Øye Hotel was a Victorian masterpiece.
Built in the late 1800s, the hotel was one of the first luxury hotels in the area and still maintains its original facade and interiors.
Each room is decorated with a specific theme, all fitting the same Victorian genre. This massive property has more than five social rooms with different purposes.
There’s a library, a palm room, and even a conservatory. Our guide Torunn gave a property tour, including a bike expedition around the fjord. During dinner, we again sampled other Norwegian classics that were equally as good as the ones I tried earlier and, lastly, we toasted to our final night together.
Why You Should Book A Local Guide
Local guides like Torunn from Up Norway are essential for a good experience, especially in countries where getting off path is an essential part of the experience.
They not only know where and when to go to certain places, they understand the different dynamics of specific cultures.
They explain how things work in ways you can understand, and they often do much of the non-fun work for you, like booking all the hotels and experiences.
Up Norway was able to attune itself to my specific wants and needs and create an itinerary that was perfect for my interests. If there was something I didn’t want to do, they could adjust it in a way that didn’t seem complicated.
Having someone who can do this is such an advantage when traveling abroad, especially when you don’t speak the native language.
Granted, you should always pick up a few words whenever you’re traveling somewhere new, but knowing how to barter isn’t always as easy for every traveler, and Torunn was able to help me in most cases.
There are plenty of English speakers in Norway, so that wasn’t much of an issue, but it was nice having someone there just in case anything happened.
Another positive aspect of getting a local guide is knowing which places to avoid. Often, we want to see the most touristy thing because that’s all we know. With a local guide, we get the heads up on what’s worth visiting and what’s not.
For example: Up Norway took me to the Skåbu village, which I would have never known about. It might not be highly touristy at first glance, but it was one of my favorite experiences, and that wouldn’t have been possible without a guide.
How Much Are Guides?
Pricing depends on what you want. If you’re looking for a luxury adventure in the mountains, that can cost more.
It all varies on what you like to do. Up Norway will ask you questions and curate a travel itinerary with pricing.
This is not a binding agreement; you can alter the itinerary as you see fit, and most airline purchases are separate from this.
Is A Guide Good For Solo Or Group Travelers?
Again, it depends on what you want to do. If you bring on the family, you let them know in advance, and they’ll create a customizable list of things to do.
If you’re traveling solo and prefer to avoid communicating with anyone, they can arrange a text-based service that allows you to keep on top of things without being around too many people.
Norway is a fantastic destination for solo and group travelers because there’s so much to do here. Working with a guide will open that up for you, and you’ll get to experience different things like dog sledding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and more.
The next time you travel and want a snowy vacation check out the country of Norway. This underrated destination is best experienced with a local guide like Up Norway, which can have something for all different types of travelers.
Tipping on vacation is awkward. There’s no way around it. Every country has its own norms, and every hotel has a hundred employees who all seem worthy of a few extra bucks. But who do we actually need to tip? When should we do it? And how often should we be doing it? And of course, how much?
Fear no more, for Travel Off Path has you covered. Here’s the ultimate guide on who to tip while traveling.
From the Airport To The Hotel
Obviously, this depends on how you get to your hotel. If you’re finding your own way, tip yourself with a drink at the bar later. If not, follow these rules.
Shuttle Drivers
If you’ve got a shuttle organized by your hotel, definitely tip your driver. A lot of them rely heavily on tips. Depending on the country, anywhere from $2.50 to $5.00 a person should suffice.
Taxi Drivers
Don’t tip your taxi driver unless you really want to. They’re making money off of your fare at a decent rate. The tourist area rates are often brutally inflated, so don’t go out of your way for them.
In The Hotel
The Porters
These guys can make your arrival and departure a breeze. Reward them as such. It doesn’t require anything crazy. A few bucks per bag is perfect. A family of four could tip $10-$15, especially if they carry the luggage a pretty long way or in rough weather. Many porters often set the mood for the entire stay with their attitude, so make sure they know they’ve done a good job.
Housekeeping
Often unseen, this team helps make your room spotless when your return each day (at least, they usually do). They’re also some of the worst-paid workers in the sector, so a tip for them can go a long way.
It’s important to leave a small amount each day rather than one large tip at the end, as you may have multiple housekeepers in your room. It’s also a great idea to leave a slightly larger tip on your first day to help get a little bit of extra attention to your room.
Don’t go crazy. $5 a day is at the upper end of what is necessary, especially in countries with a lower cost of living. Make sure to leave it somewhere obvious, so it’s clear for them.
The Lobby Crew
The Concierge
In today’s internet-dominated world, the concierge has become a little less useful for many of us. But they are still around in most good hotels. They’re still capable of booking things, sniffing out a good reservation, and even bagging you a better room, but you might not use them so much. If you’re a hotel regular, the concierge should still be a useful person.
Tip them based on use. If they just throw you a direction or two, you’re fine. But if they spend half an hour working out your day, give them $5 or so.
Front Desk Staff
As helpful as they can be, the front desk doesn’t need to be tipped. Many of them are on a managerial path and are paid a yearly salary as opposed to hourly. The best thing you can do for them is to go online and namedrop them in a good review of your hotel.
Eating Out
This is where things get complicated. In the US, we tip almost every waiter or barman who serves us. This is mainly due to the way these workers are paid. In Europe and other areas of the world, bar and restaurant staff are paid a fair hourly wage, and tipping is not expected – in some cases, it can be taken as an insult.
The Americas
As a rule of thumb, always tip your servers in the Americas. North, Central, And South America all expect a tip of some sort. In the States, Canada, and Colombia, for 15-20%. In other countries, you can swing a little lower, in the 10-15% range. Brazil, Costa Rica, and Chile all include a service or sit-down charge, so you don’t need to tip there.
Europe
Europeans are far less likely to take tips than anywhere else in the world. Most of the countries there receive good wages, and often, the waiters won’t receive the whole thing anyway. Some countries now actively list their service charge (the price is the same) to give the hint that tipping isn’t required.
In most of these places, you can leave a little extra if the service was exceptional. Otherwise, don’t worry about it. If you’re unsure about an individual country, just ask someone when you arrive.
Africa and the Middle-east
Tipping is widely expected in the Middle East. Even countries like Qatar and the UAE, which often include service charges, want an extra 15-20% on top of the bill. Many African countries also look for about 10-15% of the bill in tips.
Asia
Some Asian countries like China adamantly refuse tips, while others, like Japan, view it as something that needs to be hard-earned, above and beyond the good service that’s already expected. Some heavily touristy countries like Thailand are becoming more receptive to tipping after realizing the amount of money that can be made.

For most of air travel history, Canadians have gotten the shaft when it comes to flight availability, cheap tickets, and cool far-flung routes. We’ve watched our neighbor to the south get the most amazing flight connectivity, while we’ve had to pay higher prices for less exciting destinations. However, as of 2022 there are now more airlines, flight routes, and direct international destinations than ever before.
That’s right Canadians, it’s time to travel. With the addition of many low-cost airlines to Canada’s sky, all the airlines have had to pull up their socks and give the best offerings possible, despite the pandemic, rising fuel costs, and staff shortages.
Canada now flies direct to more cities than ever before, and there are some great deals to be had.
But what airlines are new to Canada this year? And where do they fly? What are prices like? What about seats and bags?
This Canadian airline guide is going to go over:
ALL the major airlines operating in Canada, with info on the new ultra-low-cost airlines like Lynx, Swoop, and Jetlines
Every city they fly to
What some unique routes are for each airline
What sets them apart from the others, pros and cons
Info on seats and bags
Everything else you need to know about these Canadian airlines
Air Canada
Air Canada, the nation’s flag carrier, is the biggest airline in Canada with the most destinations served. The actual Air Canada brand flies to a massive list of cities, and of course with its position in the Star Alliance, the ability to connect with 1-stop to almost any corner of the planet. Air Canada’s base is out of Montreal and is more popular with Eastern Canadians.
Pros
Huge selection of destinations and routes
On average, more seat width, leg room, and baggage allowance than other Canadian airlines
The ability to earn and use popular Aeroplan points for flights
Multiple planes that feature business class, including lay-flat ‘pod’ type seats
Great network of lounges worldwide
Cons
Can be one of the most expensive airlines to book on (although good deals can always be found)
Some people feel the brand and the vibe is a little old school when compared to the other airlines

Seats and Leg Room

Premium Economy: You’ll get a wider seat on almost every premium economy flight, with an average of 19-24″, with 37-38″ seat pitch / legroom, which is a great upgrade from economy.
Business: In a non-lay flat bed seat, business seats have an average width of 20-21″.

WestJet
WestJet is Canada’s 2nd biggest airline with its base in Calgary, making it a very popular option for Western Canucks. They’ve grown tremendously in the past 15 years and have added many new routes with no signs of slowing down.
Pros
WestJet gets a better overall customer review score, outranking Air Canada
WestJet does have some code sharing with OneWorld and Skyteam, which helps with longer international trips.
Cons
Many of WestJet’s planes, even the new ones, don’t have entertainment screens installed.
You have to be flying pretty far, like to Europe on one of their new 787s, in order to get any free food.
While WestJet used to be cheaper than Air Canada, in almost every case they now have identical pricing

Seats and Leg Room
Economy: WestJet has 17″ wide seats in economy on most of their planes, which is 1″ less than Air Canada. They also have 31-36″ seat pitch/ legroom on most aircraft, so the planes with 34-36 give WestJet a huge legroom advantage.
Premium Economy: Most of WestJet’s Premium Economy (or ‘Plus’ seating), is the same seats as economy, but with the middle seat blocked off with a makeshift table, making the width the same as economy, 17″. A few planes have been retro-fitted with proper PE seats, those give 19-20″ width, and a massive 38″ seat pitch / legroom.
Business: On their 787’s, the business class seats turn into a lie-flat bed, with 21″ width and 46″ seat pitch / legroom.

WestJet allows you to bring both a personal item and a carry-on bag for free. The personal item size allowance is 16 x 6 x 13″ and carry-on bag size at 21 x 9 x 15″
Swoop
Swoop is the largest new kid on the block when it comes to Canadian airlines, and probably the largest example of success when it comes to an ultra-low-cost airline in the country.
The tickets can be extremely cheap, think as low as $79 for international flights down to Mexico or the U.S., but know they charge for absolutely everything past that. If you are a light traveler, you can save some serious money with Swoop, plus they have routes the big guys don’t have. We flew the Kelowna – Winnipeg route when it first came out and did a full review.
Pros
Incredibly low prices on airline tickets, we’ve seen prices as low as $29, which is something Canada hasn’t seen in decades.
Owned by WestJet, so you know the quality is there
The ability to fly direct on less popular routes that WestJet and Air Canada don’t operate
Cons
You’re charged for absolutely everything. If you want to pick seats and bring lots of luggage, you can easily jack the price up as high as the major full-service carriers.
The routes, while seriously growing all the time, are still nowhere near AC or WJ’s offerings.
Planes are not as comfortable and really only offer 1-class of seating. The only way to score some extra leg room is to pick an emergency row or front of the plane, which can cost $25-50 extra.
Pets are not allowed on Swoop flights

No. Swoop does not allow pets in the cabin, not even as service animals.
Seats and Leg Room
Economy: Swoop only has economy seats, with an average of 29″ pitch / leg room, and 17″ inch wide seat. On available planes, the extra leg room seats that are available for purchase for $25-$50 at time of booking will get you another 4-6″ of leg room. (They go up in price if purchased later on.)
Checked bags have a cost on Swoop, and so does the time frame of when you buy them. All costs below are based on buying them at the same time the ticket is purchased. If you sign on and modify an existing booking to add a bag later, it’s an additional $10 fee, and if you add a bag at the airport, it’s an additional $20 fee. They also add a $2 summer and Christmas ‘peak’ fee to all baggage prices.

Checked bags are limited to 50 lbs
Carry on Bags

Air Transat
Air Transat is Canada’s largest vacation and charter airline based out of Quebec. In 2021, Air Canada canceled their acquisition deal of the airline. The flights are mostly targeted at snowbirds going to the states and vacationers heading to Mexico, the Caribbean, and even some impressive European routes.
Pros
Great deals to both popular routes, like Los Angeles and Cancun, but also to some more unique places like Cartagena, Colombia and Malaga, Spain.
They have a ‘club’ class, which is very similar to a business class-type seat, offering very comfortable ways to vacation hotspots that other airlines don’t.
You can earn Aeroplan points on flight due to their agreement with the Star Alliance
Carry-on bags are free
Cons
Many of the routes are extremely seasonal, so they won’t be available all year
Some planes have a 16.5″ wide seat in economy, which is a tight squeeze for many.
Pricing for the ‘Club’ cabin (which is a version of business class) can get quite pricey considering it’s not a full-service business class product. Deals can always be found, but the standard pricing can be eye-opening for a charter airline.

Montreal to Acapulco
Pet Policy
Yes. Air Transat allows pets in the cabin. 1 cat or dog per passenger, with at least 72 hours notice, the kennel must count as the passengers carry-on allowance, the kennel can now exceed 17 x 9.5 x 10″, and a fee of $50 within Canada/U.S. or $100 internationally must be paid.
Seats and Leg Room
Economy: Air Transat has seats as small as 16.5″ wide in economy, making them one of the smallest in thecountry, but some planes have the standard 17″ and a few aircraft with 18″. If you are concerned with getting a 16.5″ seat, check the flight on SeatGuru before you book. Seat pitch / legroom for economy is between 31-32″. Club (Business): Air Transat has very roomy club seats averaging 20-22″ wide and 33-38″ seat pitch / legroom.
Air Transat has a 50lb limit to checked baggage, even in their ‘club’ class.
When passengers book the flight only, economy is charged $35-90 for a checked bag, (based on distance) but get it free if a vacation package has been booked. Club class always gets a free checked bag.
Carry-On Bags
Air Transat allows both a free carry-on bag and a personal item on all flights. Carry on bags have a size limit of 20 x 9 x 16″ and personal items have a size limit of 17 x 5 x 12
Sunwing
Sunwing, like Air Transat, is the other major discount charter airline in Canada, offering cheap flights and vacation packages to sunny destinations. In March 2022, WestJet announced its deal to acquire Sunwing.
Pros
Sunwing operates out of almost every Canadian airport, even smaller ones like Regina SK, offering more vacation for Canadians who don’t live near major airports like Toronto.
They have really cheap vacation packages, including hotels. Sometimes the prices are so cheap it’s like getting the round-trip flight for free.
Cons
Service is an issue, especially in pandemic times. It’s been well talked about that Sunwing has suspended food and beverage service on flights throughout the past few years, leaving passengers hungry. Imagine a 5.5 hour flight from Winnipeg to Mexico without anything to eat!
Seats are small and legroom is almost nonexistent
There is no premium economy or business on any flight. The only way to get any extra legroom is one row of emergency seating mid-plane.
The carry-on weight allowance is laughable and almost impossible to meet.
Where does Sunwing fly DIRECT?
Here is a list of cities that Sunwing currently flies to that can be reached with a direct non-stop flight.
*Sunwing’s flights are FROM Canada to sunny destinations, and not really used for domestic routes
Mexico
Acapulco Cancun Huatulco Ixtapa Los Cabos Manzanillo Mazatlan Puerto Vallarta

Central America
Liberia, Costa Rica Panama City, Panama
Pet Policy
No. Pets are not allowed in the cabin on Sunwing unless they are a service animal.
Seats and Leg Room
Economy: The seating is a little tight on Sunwing. They only fly a 737-type plane with one version of economy class, with seats that are 17″ wide and 29″ inches of seat pitch / leg room. Tall passengers will have an issue. The saving grace is if you’re able to book a seat in the emergency row, which gives you up to 10″ more leg room, depending on the aircraft.
Checked Baggage
Sunwing allows passengers who’ve booked a total vacation package to bring one checked bag for free, while passengers who’ve only booked a flight with Sunwing will have to pay $21-$26.
The max weight for a checked bag is 50 lbs
Carry On Bags
Sunwing allows all passengers to bring on a free personal item and 1 free carry-on bag. However, the carry-on weight rule is INSANELY regulated and extremely low weight at 11 lbs. Truth be told, most EMPTY carry-on bags weigh around 11lbs without any items inside. Sunwing checks every single bag and will simply not allow it on the plane if it’s over 11lbs, as there is no fee you can pay to allow for a heavier bag.
Carry-on bags have a size limit of 20 x 9 x 16″ and the personal item has a size limit of 9 x 11 x 5 (the smallest in the industry by far)
Lynx
Lynx, a very new ULCC kid on the block, has launched in 2022 with some great routes to start. They are currently serving 10 cities across Canada, with fares as low as $49 on their 737 planes.

Flair
Flair Airlines has been around for about 15 years, but recently went under a re-brand as they launched more routes, really trying to stick out in the Canadian market. They are not owned by any of the big guys… yet.. so they like to lead with the message they are independent.
They have some seriously low fares, like Calgary to Victoria for $29 for example, something never seen before in the Canadian industry.

Seats and Legroom
Economy: Flair Airlines uses 737 planes, which have 29-30″ of seat pitch / legroom and 17″ of seat width. They have extra legroom seats available in the emergency row mid-plane as well as the front few rows, but we couldn’t find an exact measurement of just how many more inches it gets you.
Fees for seats are as follows: $10-$20 for a normal seat selection, and $25-45 for an extra legroom or emergency row seat. Seats are free if you allow Flair to select it for you.
Checked Baggage
Flair charges $49-$69 for a checked bag when you purchase it at the time of buying the ticket, with an additional $10 fee if you buy it at the airport. Checked bags have a 50 lb maximum.
Carry-on Bags
A personal item is free on Flair, but a carry-on bag will cost you. Personal items have a max size limit of 17 x 6 x 13″ and 15 lbs, which is pretty generous for an ULCC.
A carry on bag is $29-$49 when you pre-pay with an additional $10 fee at the airport, must weigh under 22. lbs and have a max size of 21.5 x 15.5 x 9, which is as big as Air Canada.
Porter
Porter Airlines is located at Billy Bishop airport, Toronto’s smaller (cooler!) airport on the island. The airline only flies the smaller Bombardier Q400 ‘Dash’ planes, but offers some decent Eastern routes, both within Canada and the States.
Where does Porter fly direct?
Here is a list of cities that Porter flies to directly:

Jetlines
Jetlines is so new to Canada that at the time of writing this article (July 2022) they still don’t have their routes published. Jetlines will have its headquarters just outside of Toronto. They plan to start operations late summer / early fall 2022 and plan to fly within Canada and to the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean.
Smaller regional Canadian airlines
In addition to all the above airlines, there are still more Canadian airlines to mention, especially for smaller regional routes. All of the below carriers offer important connections throughout the provinces and territories. Click on the carrier to see their current flight route map.
Canada has finally positioned itself to offer passengers more options than ever when it comes to air travel, and it looks like all the pent-up demand in 2022 is only driving this trend further.
