Colombia Drops Vaccine Requirement For All International Travelers

After three years of imposing strict health controls at its outer borders in a bid to keep COVID variants from being imported, Colombia has dropped the vaccine requirement, allowing all international travelers to visit without disclosing their immunization status.

Authorities have silently removed all vaccine and most pandemic-related mandates affecting tourists seeking entry into the South American country – as per the latest update published by IATA. This has been confirmed by one of our staffers who just entered the country without restriction.

But what does this mean in practice, and are there any requirements left for visiting Colombia now that vaccination is no longer mandatory?

What Has Changed Since The Latest IATA Update?

According to the Travel Regulations Map maintained by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), where changes in border rules are tracked, Colombia has ceased requiring foreigners to present COVID proof of entry, based on the update dated May 4, 2023.

In other words, tourists will no longer be expected to present proof of vaccination boarding a Colombia-bound flight in their home country, or instead, undergo pre-travel testing, nor be subject to further checks landing at their destination.

This is great news for unvaccinated travelers, particularly those coming from the United States, who had had their movements into and out of Colombia restricted before, from being banned to being forced to present a negative test for entry later on.

There is still one requirement that hasn’t been done away with:

The CheckMig Form Remains Mandatory, But No COVID-Related Questions

While pandemic-era entry rules are no more, the Colombian Government has kept the CheckMig form in place, and completing it is now the only requirement for flying to Colombia. Additionally, questions related to immunization have been removed from the form.

Whether you’re vaccinated or unvaccinated, you must simply fill it out at most 72 hours and up to one hour before departure.

The CheckMig platform is Colombia’s pandemic-era solution for pre-travel registration. It serves as a travel permit, seeing that without completing it, you may be denied boarding or entry into Colombia. Fortunately, it is free to apply for, and all travelers are now treated the same, irrespective of vaccination.

No Vaccination Or Testing

To sum it up, traveling to Colombia, you are no longer expected to present a:
- Vaccination certificate indicating a complete vaccination course; or
- A negative antigen test undertaken prior to departure; or
- Undergo isolation upon arrival when unvaccinated, or having failed to complete a vaccination course; and
- Present mandatory COVID health insurance
As confirmed by the Colombian Consulate in Paris, France, the country has officially reinstated its pre-pandemic entry regulations. As long as they satisfy visa requirements and present a valid and ‘undamaged’ passport, foreigners will be granted entry hassle-free.

As a matter of fact, one of our editors-in-chief has just landed in Colombia today and has been able to verify that a vaccine or test certificate is indeed not required, either upon check-in at the airport or crossing the international border.

It is worth noting U.S. and Canada passport holders can remain in Colombia for up to six months without applying for a visa in advance, making it one of the easiest South American countries to travel to, unlike neighboring Brazil, which has recently shut its doors to North Americans by imposing a new tourist visa.

Home to breathtaking and surprisingly diverse scenery, which comprises Andean peaks, dense tropical jungles, including a sizable portion of the Amazon rainforest, and a pristine coastline bounded by the Caribbean Sea, Colombia is the perfect natural world destination.

Peak summer travel season is just weeks away, and tourists are beginning to get excited about the epic trips they have planned.

With more tourists than ever expected to travel abroad this year, and most trips already booked, we now have access to new data showing this year’s travel trends.

A new report from travel insurance company Squaremouth breaks down info on the destinations, expenses, and demographics for travel in summer 2023.

Higher Average Trip Costs

According to Squaremouth’s report, which analyzed data from thousands of travel insurance policies that were purchased for this summer, travelers are spending more.

For the third year in a row, travel costs have increased, making summer 2023 the most expensive year to date.

On average, travelers are spending $9,333 on trips this summer. That price is nearly 7% higher than in 2022 and 27% higher than 2021’s costs.

Boomers Are Back

In 2021 when Covid was more prevalent and older people were at a higher risk of health complications, baby boomers only made up 29% of Squaremouth’s travelers.

Last year that increased to 33%, and now it has risen to 40%. The percentage of Gen Xers traveling this summer is second highest at 22%, followed by Gen Z at 15% and Millennials at just 12%.

However, it is important to note that the data is based on information gathered from people who have purchased travel insurance policies from Squaremouth. So while it is generally interesting information, it is only one piece of the puzzle.

Are millennials traveling less? Not necessarily – they could be purchasing insurance from other companies or not buying it at all.

Additionally, a higher percentage of baby boomers traveling does not mean that fewer younger generations are packing their bags; it simply means that the proportion of boomers has increased at a higher rate.

Travelers Are Headed Abroad

A whopping 76% of Squaremouth customers are headed abroad this summer. One region, in particular, accounted for 42% of all travel insurance sales – Europe. In fact, 8 of the top 10 international destinations are in Europe.

So where are all these travelers headed? By breaking down the percentage of travel insurance policy sales by destination, Squaremouth has reported the 10 most popular international destinations.

10. Norway

Stunning Norway is the 10^th most popular international destination, with 2.2% of travelers headed to the Scandinavian Adventureland.

With dramatic scenery, terrific cultural festivals, and some of the best places to view the Northern Lights, Norway is becoming more and more popular with American tourists.

9. Ireland

A long-time favorite destination for U.S. tourists, Ireland frequently receives accolades for its multitude of travel opportunities.

Be it the ease of traveling in an English-speaking country, the cozy pubs, or the dramatic Atlantic coastline, Ireland is a great destination for balancing fun nights out with adventure.

8. Germany

Germany is a constant favorite for travelers. Its cities are packed with history, and thanks to an efficient train network, it is possible to visit multiple cities in one trip.

This is an increase of 30% in 2021 numbers and up 24% from 2019.

It’s no surprise that travel won’t be slowing down anytime soon, especially when Tripadvisor reports that over two-thirds of global travelers are planning a trip between this December and next February – but where will everyone be going?

Tripadvisor can give a good indication, as it recently conducted a survey across six of its markets, which included the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan, to find out some of the travel trends for the upcoming season, and the insights might surprise you.

How Do America’s Top International Destinations Compare To Others?

Each market ranked its top domestic and international destination, and overall findings backed up that 30% of all respondents plan to vacation closer to home, as shown by the selection of top international destinations by each country.

Americans chose Mexico and the Caribbean in eight out of ten of its top destinations, with Mexico representing four destinations in the top five. Mexico is a popular option for Christmas this year and has many reasons for enticing so many Americans.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom gravitated towards international destinations in Europe, such as Paris, France, Amsterdam, Netherlands, and multiple locations in Spain. Australia chose six out of ten destinations in Thailand, while both Japan and Singapore selected Bangkok, Thailand, Seoul, South Korea, and Paris, France in their top five.

The most popular global destinations across all Tripadvisor respondents represented a mix of major cities and winter sun favorites, with London coming in at number one, followed by Paris, New York City, Cancun, and Dubai.

How Do U.S. Travel Behaviors Compare To The Other Markets?

Tripadvisor reported that traveler appetite has shown no sign of slowing down despite the rising costs with global inflation. More respondents than last year favored taking international trips, which increased from 40% to 43%, showing strong demand for international travel. Other highlights included:
- Americans are most likely to travel the same amount or more compared to last year; 93% of U.S. respondents will travel the same amount or more, while the U.K. sits the lowest at 86%.
- America ranks lower than other markets for traveling this upcoming season: over two-thirds of global participants plan to travel for the upcoming season, while America comes in as the fourth country at 59%.
- Americans will be taking more 6+ trips compared to other markets. Other markets represented higher numbers for just one to two trips.
- After Japan, Americans travel the least internationally. Almost a quarter of U.S. respondents will travel internationally, compared to nine out of ten people for Singapore and half of U.K. respondents.
- More Americans will be returning to destinations that they have visited before: almost three-quarters of U.S. respondents (73%) will return to the same destination, in comparison to the other markets (68%).
- U.S respondents are almost on par with the globe for changing their travel behaviors based on rising living costs. This shows that almost two-thirds of the networks have been affected by rising living costs, which is the same for Americans (61% said they would change travel behaviors compared to 62% of all respondents).
