This beautiful, peaceful Mediterranean island is geographically located in the Middle East, but culturally and politically, it’s a part of Europe.

It has already been growing in popularity with tourists, and it’s also set to become a top destination for digital nomads.

Here’s why Cyprus will become the next digital nomad hotspot this year:

1. Beautiful Weather Year-Round

If you’re looking to escape the cold and work from paradise, Cyprus is the perfect place to do it!

With its warm Mediterranean climate and around 330 days of sunshine per year, Cyprus is a great destination for digital nomads who want sunny weather and proximity to the beach.

Cyprus gets extremely hot during the summer (with temperatures regularly exceeding 95° F to 100° F) but it’s an absolute dream the rest of the year.

Even in the winter, it rarely drops below 60° F — and with the sun out, this still feels quite warm!

2. It’s Not In The Schegen Zone

Most countries in the EU are part of the Schengen Zone, and Americans can only stay in the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days out of every 180 days without a visa.

Although Cyprus is part of the EU, it’s not part of the Schengen Zone.

It’s one of the few remaining countries in the EU where you can stay for up to 90 days without counting against your 90-day Schengen Zone allotment. So for example, you could spend 90 days in Cyprus, then immediately go spend another 90 days in Greece (which is in the Schengen Zone.)

Now that countries like Croatia are part of the Schengen Zone, and countries like Romania and Bulgaria are joining next month, Cyprus is one of only two EU countries (the other being Ireland) still not part of it.

3. Affordable Cost Of Living

Another reason Cyprus is great for digital nomads is because it offers an affordable cost of living.

With many of the most popular countries in Europe experiencing soaring prices and a cost of living crisis, Cyprus remains comparatively affordable.

In particular, the capital Nicosia is the most affordable city in Cyprus. However, it’s not on the beach — but it is less than an hour away. If you want close proximity to the beach, it might cost you a little more.

Paphos, Larnaca, and Limassol are the three most popular beachfront cities in Cyprus, and all make a great base for digital nomads. And you can still enjoy living by the beach for less than it would cost in many other European destinations.

4. It’s Extremely Safe

As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe in Cyprus. Overall, it’s an extremely calm and peaceful place.

You might look at a map and notice Cyprus’s proximity to Israel, Lebanon, and Syria, but this Mediterranean island could not feel more isolated and far away from conflicts in nearby countries.

If safety is a top priority for you, you don’t have anything to worry about in Cyprus.

5. Enjoy A High Quality Of Life

Finally, digital nomads can enjoy a high quality of life in Cyprus.

The majority of people in Cyprus are Greek, and the laidback Mediterranean mentality of Greece extends to Cyprus too. You can enjoy a slower pace of life here.

Family and community are important, friends linger over a big meze meal together, and it’s very much a “work to live” not “live to work” mindset. If that sounds like something you’re looking for, Cyprus just might be the perfect digital nomad base for you!

Avid followers of travel trends will have read all about this year’s upcoming trending destinations – the likes of Japan, Turkey, and South Korea have been getting a lot of column inches.

But another nation tipped to be one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in 2024 is the beautiful island of Sri Lanka – and so far, it seems like that prediction is coming true.

The latest figures from Sri Lanka’s Tourism Authority show that the country experienced a surge in international visitors for the first two months of 2024 – both January and February were more than 100% up in 2023.

If that trend continues, Sri Lanka will almost certainly be one of the hottest travel destinations on the planet this year—so why should you consider it?

Amazing Cities And Nature

It’s hard to find a traveler who’s been to Sri Lanka and hasn’t absolutely loved it – the country just seems to push all the right buttons and leave people with long-lasting memories.

From the chaotic and exciting streets of Colombo to the beautiful riverside temples of Kandy – Sri Lanka’s cities allow you to sample a culture that is influenced by South India and Europe.

Venture away from the urban jungles, and you will find lush green hills and the chance to encounter exotic wildlife, including elephants.

As a small island, Sri Lanka is also blessed with beautiful beaches on almost every coast with some of the most iconic being Bentota Beach in the southwest and Mirissa Beach on the south coast close to Galle.

Incredibly Affordable

One thing that makes those incredible sights and attractions even more appealing is just how affordable Sri Lanka is.

If you’re willing to backpack and use hostels, you can often find a place to sleep for less than $10 a night, or if you prefer a little more comfort, you should be able to get a decent hotel with a nightly rate of $50 (maybe even less).

Ideal For Digital Nomads

When Sri Lanka first announced it was launching a digital nomad visa, it got a heck of a lot of travelers excited.

The visa allows you to stay for a year, provided you earn the minimum required amount (around $2,000 per month), and can be extended fairly easily.

The latest info from Nomadlist shows that you live in popular destinations such as Galle and Kandy for less than $1,300 per month.

Great At Any Time Of Year

Sri Lanka’s location and unique geographical mix of coastal lowlands and hilly inner regions mean that it can be an all-year-round destination – you just need to make sure you visit the right place at the right time.

The country enjoys warm weather throughout the year.

However, there are two main monsoon seasons: the Yala, which is concentrated in the southwest from April to June, and the Maha, which is worst on the east coast between November and March.

Festivals And Culture

Sri Lankan life is punctuated with many colorful festivals celebrating religion and the country’s history.

February 4 is Sri Lanka’s national Independence Day, while Sinhalese New Year is celebrated on April 13 this year, while Diwali – another hugely celebrated festival in Sri Lanka – takes place on October 31.

Solo Travelers Seem To Love It

For many, Sri Lanka reminds them of what it was like to travel around Southeast Asia many years ago.

The country is still relatively underrated and is a place where you can make up plans as you go along, something that solo travelers will always find appealing.

Simple To Visit

Before you travel, you need to grab yourself a Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) visa, which will allow you double entry into the country for 30 days.

You apply for it online and there is a fee of $50 – the visa can be extended while you are in Sri Lanka for a further fee.

Sri Lanka is rated as a Level 2 travel advisory by the U.S. government, which means exercise increased caution.

While this is not the lowest level possible, Sri Lanka is generally safe for tourists provided you are sensible – the Level 2 is largely due to some civil unrest in the country back in the fall of 2023.

I Have Visited Every Island In Spain And This Is The One You Can’t Miss

I love Spain but especially Spain’s islands.

They’re the perfect destination for laid-back relaxation, boast beautiful beaches, outstanding natural beauty, fascinating culture, and (for the most part) warm and welcoming people.

But which island is best?

I’ve been lucky enough to visit every island in Spain, and this is the one I keep going back to. Here’s why you can’t miss it:

The Balearics Or The Canary Islands?

There are two main island chains in Spain: The Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

The Balearic Islands is an island group located in the western Mediterranean Sea just off the coast of Spain. There are 4 main islands, although there are 151 in total. Only 5 of these are inhabited: Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Cabrera.

The Canary Islands are a chain of islands and islets located off the coast of northwestern Africa. In fact although they are Spanish territory they are considerably closer to Africa than they are to Spain. The 4 main islands are Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote.

Both island chains are known for their abundance of beautiful beaches. Both are popular with tourists looking for a sun, sea, and sand vacation.

But if you want to visit no matter what the time of year then the Canary Islands really can’t be beaten for their year-round sunshine. When it’s cold and raining at home you’re guaranteed a hot sunny break in the Canaries.

What’s more the sea temperatures are always above 20°C (68 F) even during the coldest winter months. By contrast, the Balearic Islands experience typically Mediterranean seasonal weather fluctuations and you can only swim in the sea during the warmest (and most expensive) months of the year.

Because tourism is seasonal on the Balearic Islands, this means that if you want to visit when the weather is warm, the crowd levels are always high.

And with locations such as Palma de Mallorca on Majorca and Playa d’en Bossa on Ibiza attracting party people with their high-octane nightlife, they’re not the best spots for low-key relaxation.

The Island Of Fuerteventura

I will always choose to visit the Canary Islands over The Balearic Islands.

Tenerife is the most-visited Canary Island in the chain and it has many busy and bustling resort towns. But by far my favorite island in this chain is Fuerteventura. There are so many reasons why!

First, the island boasts incredible rugged landscapes of incredible volcanic rock formations. Calderón Hondo is the most famous volcano in Fuerteventura and you can hike to its peak if you’re feeling energetic.

You’ll find similar volcanic displays across all of the Canary Islands. But what makes Fuerteventura unique is that these barren landscapes are punctuated by the Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park. These massive sand dunes are the biggest in Europe and they are breathtakingly beautiful. They are often referred to as a mini Sahara, but they’re much more accessible.

On the edge of these sand dunes is an incredible turquoise coastline with kilometers of beautiful white sand beaches. Many of these beaches don’t have traditional facilities such as restrooms or restaurants but they are truly stunning places to swim, sunbathe, and surf. La Oliva is my favorite beach here thanks to its calm waters and smooth, soft sand.

The people in Fuerteventura are among the friendliest I have ever met. While other islands (notably Gran Canaria right now) are railing against growing tourism and encouraging travelers to stay away, on Fuerteventura you’ll receive a warm welcome.

There are large communities of ex-pats on the island, and much of the local economy is reliant on tourism. Because surfing is such a huge part of life on the island you’ll also find laid-back surfing communities here.

My favorite is in Correlejo on the northern tip of the island. It has a reputation for having the best surf in Europe, boasts an abundance of surf schools, and whether you’re traveling solo or as a group you’re sure to find like-minded people here.

Convenient Location

If you have itchy feet like me then Fuerteventura is also a great choice because it’s such a good base for wider exploration.

In fact staying on Fuerteventura is worth it for visiting Las Lobos alone. The uninhabited island of Las Lobos is a protected island that can only be accessed by ferry from Fuerteventura. This journey only takes 15 minutes and if you make the trip then you’ll be rewarded with some of the most beautiful beaches and bluest waters I’ve ever seen.

Playa de la Concha is the main beach here and it’s known for its clear waters that are popular with snorkelers. To preserve the flora and fauna of the island, which is a national park, only 400 people per day are allowed to take the journey from Fuerteventura and for many people this opportunity is the highlight of their trip.

Fuerteventura is also conveniently close to Lanzarote, and you can take the ferry between the two islands in just 30 minutes. This means that you could visit two Spanish islands in just one vacation, and it’s fascinating to take the trip and explore the unique personalities of each island.

In the waters that surround the islands you can spot fish, turtles, bottlenose dolphins, and even pilot whales which makes getting out on the water in a boat of any size even more exciting.

Whether you’re island hopping or just want to see as much of the island as possible I recommend hiring a car. The roads are well-surfaced, traffic is minimal, and it’s incredibly easy to navigate. If you choose to stay in the north of the island it’s also cheaper to hire a car than to book a transfer from the airport.

As you travel from the north to the south of Fuerteventura you’ll pass through ancient villages, and authentic local markets, and learn so much more about this incredible island.

One Of Colombia’s Safest Destinations

San Andres is a bit confusing to the eye at first glance.

Closer to mainland Nicaragua than Colombia, this South American island can easily be labeled Central America, but it is indeed a Colombian paradise in the Caribbean Sea.

Given Colombia’s iffy reputation right now across the country between U.S. travel security warnings and our own on-the-ground reporting, San Andres makes for one of the safest escapes in the nation.

Petty crime can happen anywhere, and there are reports of sketchy San Andres streets after a night of bar-hopping, but nowhere near the frequent occurrences that are often reported in the likes of Medellin, Bogota, and Cali.

The phrase ‘No Dar Papaya’ commonly used by locals is good to know anywhere in the country, which essentially means don’t give a reason to be sought out by criminals.

This idyllic vacation spot won’t have your head on a swivel wondering who is behind you; you can experience a blissful vacation in one of the most underrated beach destinations in Latin America.

World Class All-Inclusive Resorts

Mexico and other popular Caribbean getaways are not the only options for lavish all-inclusive stays. Plus, doesn’t vacationing on an island make the trip all the more alluring?

Here in San Andres, vacationers have at least 10 resorts to choose from for all-inclusive waterfront accommodations.

Many luxury hotels are packed in to the scenic northeastern tip of this small island near the cruise port.

Although, travelers can opt for more secluded stays wrapped around the stunning coastline from north to south.

TripAdvisor lists the top 5 all-inclusive San Andres resorts as follows:
- 1) Hotel Arena Blanco by Dorado (#1 for ‘Best Value’)
- 2) Decameron Aquarium
- 3) Decameron Marizul
- 4) Decameron Isleno
- 5) Decameron Maryland
Prices vary but are not outlandish compared to mega-popular vacation hotspots.

Picture-Perfect Beaches

Visiting an island paradise wouldn’t feel right without planning some much-needed beach days. While some resorts overlook the eye-popping blue waters, seeking out beaches away from resorts may be the best way to go.

Playa San Luis is set away from busy bars and high-end resorts with sprawling white sand, coral reefs and colorful traditional homes dotted along the scenic coast.

Further south is Playa Charquitos perfect for a relaxing day with less crowds and coconut stands to immerse yourself into island life living.

But perhaps the best of all is Johnny Cay – a tiny blip on the map just north of San Andres. Easily reached by boat, this tiny island lined with calm blue waters, white sand, palm trees, fresh made-to-order seafood and live reggae performances is the pinnacle of an island escape.

Multiple resorts and tour operators offer a plethora of water activities, including the unique ‘Walking Under The Sea Experience’ taking you to the seafloor for 25 minutes of aquatic wildlife viewing.

If that’s too off-the-wall, snorkeling, kayaking and private boat or jet ski rentals may be more up your alley.

Best Ways To Reach San Andres

Americans will have to factor in at least one air connection unless arriving by cruise, which are limited in their own right.

The good news is travelers can connect from popular Latin America hubs without adding significant time to your travels.

But, make sure to grab a window seat to witness the Sea of Seven Colors before landing – a variety of colorful ocean hues attributed to the coral reefs in the region.

The easiest flight connections will be through Panama City, Bogota or Medellin, while budget airline Wingo also connects through Cartagena and Barranquilla.

- Avianca
As an added bonus, the airport of San Andres is so conveniently located you can walk to your resort or grab a bite to eat and avoid transportation costs.

This Paradise Island In Mexico Has One Of The Best Beaches In The World

The Mexican Caribbean is known not only for being home to award-winning luxurious resorts and a fascinating ancient Mayan heritage but also for islands of outstanding natural beauty, with one in particular, Isla Mujeres, leading booking trends this season.

There are many reasons why tourists flock to the ‘Isla’, but the main attraction is definitely the unspoiled reserves, and more specifically, this paradisaical beach that’s made it to TripAdvisor’s list of the 25 best in the world.

A pristine sandy stretch bounded by the turquoise-colored ocean, Playa Norte in Isla Mujeres is considered the best beach in the Mexican Caribbean:

Why Are Nomads Flocking Into Isla Mujeres?

Located just off the mainland, a short 30-minute ferry ride away from Cancun, Isla Mujeres has been a popular destination for Americans for years due to its wild nature, casual vibes, and traditional island cuisine.

It is a small island municipality with a population of around 13,000 inhabitants. It is dotted with charming seaside settlements and enjoys lower levels of urbanization compared to the mainland, so it can feel less chaotic and arguably a lot safer.

Isla Mujeres is deemed one of the safest destinations in Mexico, with a lower crime rate and petty theft as the main issue facing tourists, but other than the quaintness and high levels of safety, it is a literal paradise on Earth and a tropical haven lapped by soft, white sands.

There are many gorgeous spots to consider if you’ve set out to find the most beautiful beach in town, but the indisputable winner, as anyone who has explored Isla Mujeres extensively will be able to attest, is Playa Norte, or ‘North Beach’.

Why Playa Norte Is The Best Beach In The Mexican Caribbean

As the name suggests, it is located on the northern tip of the island, and it’s best known for its thin sands, sandwiched between a row of tall palms and impossibly clear teal waters, which owe their unique tonality to the surrounding reef.

The water is warm year-round and shallow, making this a family-friendly location, and there are also a number of beach bars and restaurants in the nearby Guerrero Avenue, where visitors can sample some delicious seafood, the island’s specialty, and find reasonably-priced drinks.

Water-based activities are common, too.

From snorkeling in the neighboring reef to paddleboarding and kayaking, there are a number of activities tourists spending the day or even staying overnight in Playa Norte can choose from.

It is one of three beaches on the island to have earned the coveted Blue Flag certification from authorities, which recognizes the efforts of local management to keep the area clean and safe for visitors, and it’s the equivalent to a badge of excellence for beaches.

Perhaps it’s no surprise this beach currently as the 24th best beach in the entire world on TripAdvisor, based solely on user reviews during the preceding year: it’s essentially a permanent feature on the list at this point, and the highest-ranking Mexican Caribbean beach at that.

The only other Mexican beach to feature on the list is La Balandra, in La Paz, over on the Pacific side, and based on Playa Norte’s rave reviews, with 8,256 impressions accumulated so far on TripAdvisor at the time of writing, it is one of Mexico’s best-loved swimming spots.

It is variously described by TripAdvisor members as ‘nicest beach on the island‘, ‘beautiful’ and ‘fabulous’, with one Kansas visitor in particular claiming one ‘short’ day is not nearly enough time, serving as encouragement to others to plan a longer sojourn in Isla Mujeres.

What Are The Most Common Complaints Among Tourists?

Complaints are mostly restricted to crowding and inflated prices in some restaurants and bars, though the general consensus seems that it is not so much that the tourist experience is compromised.

Playa Norte is no wild, tourist-free beach, but it can feel a lot more relaxed compared to Cancun’s resort-packed riviera, not to mention that, during sargassum season, it remains largely unaffected while other parts of Quintana Roo are struggling with the phenomenon.

That is because of its privileged, north-facing location, in a zone where currents do not typically carry sargassum, and cleaning efforts by local workers help maintain the waters crystal-clear and the sands their natural, virgin-white self.

All in all, it’s nothing short of spectacular, and Isla Mujeres as a whole should not be underestimated as a stand-alone destination, either, when it hosts a number of five-star hotels, snorkeling and scuba diving centers, marine preserves, and even Mayan ruins.

Home to world-renowned cities like Madrid and Barcelona, blessed with year-round warmer weather and boasting endless miles of coastline, it’s no wonder Spain is one of the top destinations for Americans flying across the pond.

The entire country is a hotspot for tourism, from the culturally-charged north-westernmost provinces to the resort-dominated Costa del Sol, but one island in particular seems to be fueling tourism growth the most (and stealing the hearts of visiting Americans).

How does eating heladitos as you walk down a palm-lined boardwalk, swimming in turquoise waters, and exploring postcard-ready medieval towns sound for a vacation?

Mallorca Is A Major Force Behind Spain’s Tourism Boom

According to Spain’s AIReF, the entity responsible for GDP-related stats, the Balearic island of Mallorca is a huge contributor to Spain’s tourism rebound, with the local economy (mostly tourism-based) having grown 3.2% in 2023, above the national average of 2%.

In total, it hosted 11.6 million tourists last year, a growing number of which are Americans, who have enjoyed nonstop flights to the paradisaical island since 2022; this year, it could break all-time records, as flight frequency from key markets increases and demand soars.

Racing for the number one spot in Spain, it challenges Malaga and nearby Marbella, voted a top destination this year, the tropical Canary Islands, Barcelona, famous for its Gaudí heritage and soon-to-be-finished Sagrada Familia Basilica.

Still, with so many destinations in Spain to choose from, you may be wondering why it’s Mallorca where they’re headed.

What Makes Mallorca So Special?

The largest island of a Mediterranean archipelago known as the Balearics, and the seventh-largest in this sea, Mallorca has been inhabited since at least the 3rd millennium BC, and though it is primarily a leisure destination in the modern age, it is a cultural site of the first order.

Scenic Coastal Scenes

Magaluf may be Mallorca’s ‘Cancun’, but you should bear in mind there is a whole island to be discovered, from highly-developed beach zones to unspoiled fishing villages with origins lost to time, not to mention a verdant, hilly hinterland dotted with charming historic towns.

Encompassing Palma’s tallest peak and unique geological formations, the Tramuntana Range is a sustainable tourism center rich in biodiversity, while the northwestern edge of the island is best known for its scenic coastal drives and charming port towns.

No visit to Mallorca is complete without Port de Sóller, popular for its historic tramway and imposing Romanesque-Gothic church, the stone-built settlements of Deià, Fornalutx, and Valldemossa, with their narrow streets and terracotta roofs, or the medieval Port of Pollença (and all its pristine calas).

Mallorca Is An Affordable European Getaway

When it comes to prices, Mallorca is incredibly affordable by Mediterranean standards, as a one-week stay will set you back by $1,045 per person, including accommodation, meals and transportation between different municipalities.

Most of the food served in restaurants is locally-sourced, and thanks to Palma’s fertile terrain and balmy climate, there is an abundance of tropical fruit and vegetables and freshly-caught seafood in markets; the cost of living outside resort towns is pretty low, too.

On average, restaurant menus in Palma are half the price of New York’s, with prices for inexpensive meals in local eateries set at $14, and more elaborate, three-course dinners for two people in mid-range spots costing $53.87, or the equivalent in euros.

Nonstop U.S. Flights Returning This Year

Furthermore, there will be an increase in capacity for United’s New York-Palma flights this year, proving demand keeps growing among Americans: starting May 25, the carrier will operate a 240-seat Boeing 767-400 ER on this route, 26 more than last year’s.

In the wake of United’s success, American Airlines is also planning on operating this Transatlantic route at some point this year, with flights from Miami to Palma expected to be announced soon, though at the time of writing, no further details have been unveiled.

With nonstop flights returning, and as many as three weekly flights scheduled, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from late May through September 25, not to mention a frequency increase for intra-Europe low-cost flights, we expect Palma to become one of the top destinations in 2024.

Why This Tropical Island Will Be A Top Destination For Digital Nomads In 2024

If there is one country digital nomads are flocking to this year, it is Thailand, a tropical Southeast Asian gem famous for its gorgeous beaches, paradisaical archipelagos, laid-back lifestyle, and indigenous tradition.

The reasons for that are widely known and have been listed on Travel Off Path a number of times before: people are friendly, the weather is nice and warm year-round, the cultural wealth is a huge plus, and overall, it’s a steal of a deal.

Yeah, yeah, we all get it.

Nonetheless, there is one island in particular that has gone above and beyond to ensure nomads feel welcome and that, unlike other Asian hotspots, is not adding visa hurdles that make it impossible for them to stay longer: quite the contrary.

In 2024, trendy Phuket is racing towards becoming the continent’s top ‘workcation’ destination, openly challenging Bali’s decade-long rule, and if we were you, we wouldn’t be sitting this one out:

Clubber-Packed Phuket Has More To Offer Than You May Think

Over the years, Phuket may have developed a reputation for being Thailand’s party capital and a weekend getaway owing to its riotous nightlife and lively social scene, but it has so much more to offer to long-term visitors than nightclubs and hostel-hosted parties.

For starters, it is not only an island – and Thailand’s largest one at that – but a whole province comprising the main landmass and 32 smaller islands: it has everything from overdeveloped tourist zones to off-path spots and untouched nature, and it doesn’t get nearly enough credit for how diverse it is.

Are you the sociable type who likes to surround yourself with like-minded individuals, staying within short walking distance of shops and work-friendly cafes, and with plenty of options to entertain yourself after sundown? Phuket City is where you should be based:

The province’s multicultural capital city, home to a significant Chinese minority and a growing community of Western expats, it is best known for having an abundance of coworking spots and its picturesque Old Town, characterized by Portuguese-inspired buildings.

Looking to beat the tourist crowds instead? Kata, a laid-back beach town bounded by lush vegetation, or perhaps, Koh Yao Yai, a lesser-known island a short 20-minute boat ride from Phuket, hosting a limited number of hotels and guesthouses, are top recommendations.

Of course, Phuket’s majestic nature is a huge draw for big-city escapees: whether it’s the white-sand beaches in Phi Phi, or the hiking footpaths leading deep into the heart of the Khao Phra Teaw jungle, nomads have plenty of attractions to keep them busy during a prolonged stay.

Other than boasting a diverse tourist offer, Phuket ticks nearly every box on the Nomad List checklist.

Phuket Is A Top Destination On Nomad List

According to previous visitors who carried out remote work from the island, it is budget-friendly, with an average $1,874 per month required, considerably more expensive than other destinations in Thailand, such as remarkably affordable Chiang Mai, but still lower than median Western prices.

Nomads have also reported Phuket guests enjoy fast internet, more specifically, 59 Mbps, though that may vary depending on where in the province they are staying. Service seems to be more stable and reliable in larger settlements like Phuket City, Chalong, or Patong Town.

Phuket is good ‘fun’, too, with its numerous bar districts and varied adult entertainment, not to mention the level of urban safety, rated ‘good’ by nomads: violent crime is essentially non-existent, and other than occasional pickpocketing, foreigners are not overly worried about security.

The temperature is another huge bonus: with the exception of the monsoon season, which results in heavy precipitation between July and October, you are likely to be met with long hours of sunshine every day ‘workcationing’ in Phuket.

Right now, it’s a ‘perfect’ 84.2°F, making Phuket the ideal temporary homebase over winter. This leads us to our third point, and probably the most relevant one yet.

Phuket Wants You To Stay Longer

Phuket officials want you to stay longer and take your time in exploring the sunny island, and instead of empty promises, they have announced an online visa extension program targeted at visitors who wish to remain in the province for longer than 30 days.

Currently, U.S. passport holders are granted only a single month in Phuket, as well as the whole of Thailand, when traveling as tourists.

Thailand does have a Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) in place nomads can apply for when deciding to reside in the country in the long term, but the truth is a majority of them are country hoppers at heart and are unlikely to stay put in a single destination for more than three months at a time.

Even then, 30 days is hardly enough time to explore all that the main island has to offer, let alone all the gorgeous paradisaical islets and unspoiled archipelagos offshore.

And let’s be honest: DNVs can be incredibly complicated for first-time applicants, and the strict financial requirements will typically render them ineligible anyway.

Fellow nomads, the ancient Thai deities (also known as สำนักงานตรวจคนเข้าเมือง) have heard our prayers, and now it is possible to apply for tourist visa extension online when staying in Phuket, without bureaucracy-filled visits to the nearest immigration office.

Called ‘E-Extension‘, the platform enables nomads, or any visitor interested in staying longer, to submit their documents and schedule appointments online, from the comfort of their Airbnb or hostel, and only present themselves before authorities when it’s time to receive the visa extension stamp.

An extension will normally grant you an additional 30 days to stay in Thailand, for a total of 60 days.
