There’s a reason the Dominican Republic breaks tourism records year after year — it’s one of the most beautiful paradises in close reach to Americans ready to live it up on Spring Break, burn through PTO come summertime, and escape the dwindling temps during fall and winter.

That said, the U.S. Embassy has just issued a new travel alert for the Dominican Republic, and the reason may not be what you expect…

Boasting captivating culture, world-class resorts, pristine white-sand beaches, and underrated cuisine, there are few places to kick back or turn up at your leisure than the D.R.

Peeling Back The Layer Of Underlying Issues

Let’s not pretend the US isn’t full of its own problems. In the same breath, let’s also not overlook the safety concerns of traveling abroad to quite literally anywhere, as accidents can happen anywhere at any time.

While it’s true that a vast majority of tourists make it back home unscathed no matter the destination, the US Embassy felt it was necessary to issue a new travel alert regarding the importance of obtaining travel insurance to better protect yourself on your trip — and there have certainly been horror stories coming out of the D.R. in recent years.

I think it’s safe to say we’re all sick of talking about the dark days of the pandemic, right?

However, around this time, there were numerous reports of strange illnesses (and even deaths) at luxe resorts, though it was later determined no foul play occurred.

Regardless of circumstance, these situations are impossible to predict, making insurance-free travel a roll of the dice.

There’s also the aspect of the Dominican’s driving hazards. In fact, one insurance company ‘across the pond’ claims their data shows “the Dominican Republic has the highest road fatality rate in the world, with nearly 67 deaths per 100,000 people”.

Infrastructure can be lacking in some areas, including major cities like Santo Domingo and Santiago.

Not to mention, there are oftentimes shortages of emergency personnel, and the main reason for the US State Department’s Level 2 advisory is due to ‘violent crime’.

However, what’s become increasingly obvious in recent years is how travelers are scratching their wanderlust itch, venturing into new territory — and this is where some risk comes into play.

Say you want to check out one of the D.R.’s new vacation hotspots, Samana. That’s a 4-hour shuttle ride from Santo Domingo, much of which consists of winding roads through “no man’s land”.

When you arrive, there are plenty of outdoor activities, such as waterfall hikes. Slip on a wet rock without insurance? That’s a big oops!

One hugely important reason the Embassy is urging American travelers to obtain insurance is the simple fact that Dominican medical care requires upfront payment (even in emergencies).

Colombia has long held an iffy reputation for travelers. On one hand, it’s an amazing destination to visit.

On the other hand, many travelers have claimed they feel the need to keep their head on a swivel in certain areas.

Some of the more popular cities to visit are Medellin, Bogota and Cartagena to name a select few. The U.S. Embassy just issued a nationwide security alert this morning for all travelers in Colombia.

While the U.S. Embassy surely has intel we don’t possess, travelers can dive into our in-depth report regarding the safety aspect of Medellin here.

New Security Alert

Tragically, it has been reported from November 1 – December 31, 2023 8 U.S. tourists lost their lives by being duped by criminals.

There are a variety of ways tourists are targeted in Colombia. So much so, there is a common saying in Colombia that tourists should know.

‘No Dar Papaya’ translates to ‘don’t give papaya’. Essentially, do your best to not stand out and make yourself a target.

Keep valuables out of plain sight while going about your day, and stick to tourist-friendly neighborhoods.

Advice from the U.S. Embassy:
- Never physically resist a robbery attempt – your life is always more valuable than possessions
- Trust your intuition – if something feels off, stick to your gut
- Tell someone you trust of your plans when going out
A Fatal Scam

Colombia is no stranger to crime and the U.S. Embassy is most certainly aware. So why the sudden change in tone?

It’s quite alarming to lose 8 lives in such a short span. Medellin, in particular, has become a hotspot for U.S. tourists for its affordable costs and year-round splendid weather, among other digital nomad perks.

The world is a beautiful place, but there are bad apples everywhere. The same goes for Medellin as well as the rest of the country.

With digital nomadism and solo travel being so popular, the road can get lonely at times. With our phones glued to our hips, the easy thing to do is get on dating apps, as they are now universal.

It’s no longer a societal taboo to meet up with strangers, or even ride with them, but perhaps the latest scam will raise red flags again.

The U.S. Embassy in Bogota is sounding the alarm on dating apps in Colombia as U.S. travelers are being duped far worse than your typical ‘catfish’.

Lured in to meeting in a public place as most dates go, as the night goes on, victims were lead away from public view and assaulted, drugged, robbed and even killed in some instances.

Not all 8 reported deaths have been attributed to dating apps, but “several” have been linked.

How To Remain Vigilant Dating In Colombia

Other than keeping a heightened sense of awareness, the Embassy notes you should be one step ahead if you sense you’re on a date from hell.

Staying in public view is key as violent crimes typically take place in isolation, such as residences and hotel rooms.

When possible, inform the concierge of your hotel or residence of a visitor and ask them to obtain valid identification beforehand if you have a new visitor.

Sedatives have been used, so it’s important to keep an eye on what you’re drinking and keep your phone within reach, as electronics are a commonly stolen item.

Uptick In Crime

According to the Tourism Observatory of the District Personnel of Medellin, crime against foreigners increased 200 percent toward the end of 2023 when compared to 2022 data.

That’s a big jump that raises eyebrows. What’s even more concerning is many deaths deemed ‘violent’ were U.S. citizens in 2023.

With the latest alert, it appears these unfortunate trends are carrying over into 2024, with the dating app scam becoming the most prevalent tactic.

Here is the kicker – the U.S. Embassy admits crime often goes unreported due to victim embarrassment. While Medellin is the hotspot for crimes against tourists, with the Embassy’s knowledge of unreported crimes, they felt it was necessary to issue an alert for the whole country with Medellin, Bogota, and Cartagena being highlighted.

U.S. Issues New Emergency Travel Alert For This Popular Latin American Country

In a major turn of events, the United States has issued an emergency travel alert for Ecuador, an increasingly popular country that in recent years has become a trendy spot for nature-based getaways and cultural tourism in Latin America, thanks to its unspoiled nature and colonial heritage.

In case you haven’t been following the news in the last couple of days, peace in Ecuador has sadly been disappeared following numerous prison riots, which have led to a surge in crimes across the typically tranquil nation. Travelers will need to follow all government orders and adhere to the advice in the latest alert issued by the U.S. Embassy in Ecuador.

Now, U.S. citizens who are visiting soon, should they opt to go ahead with their travel plans, will be subject to strict new orders.

What Is Happening In Ecuador Right Now?

It all started when the Ecuadorian Government confirmed that, on January 7, Adolfo Macias, the leader of a powerful criminal organization who had been jailed on a 34-year sentence, had escaped prison on the day he was rumored to be transferred to a maximum-security facility.

There have been simultaneous criminal attacks across cities, jailbreaks, and even armed men storming into live TV studios.

As Guillhaume Long, the former Foreign Minister has stated, Ecuador may have had an issue with crime for years, having ended 2023 rated among the worse in Latin America, but following last weekend’s mayhem, the situation has ‘spiraled out of control’.

It didn’t end there:

In a coordinated attack on January 8, only a day later, prisoners in at least six other correctional facilities across Ecuador rebelled against authorities and seized power, with as many as 150 guards and staff taken hostage and 39 inmates breaking free of a prison in Riobamba alone.

The situation keeps deteriorating quickly, as by January 9, violence quickly spilled onto the streets, with at least five explosions in ‘several cities’.

Though there have been no injuries or casualties reported for those, the overall picture is rather grim, and what’s worse, fast-evolving.

Government officials have counted as many as 30 different attacks since Macias went missing last Sunday, but no exact links have yet been established, nor has the inmate been tracked down yet.

We understand it may be confusing, and there is a lot going on, but this is clear: due to drug trafficking and turf wars, violence in Ecuador has risen tremendously compared to previous years, and even recent weeks, and the state of unrest could be prolonged further.

What Has Been The Government’s Response?

Based on Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa’s statements, civil distress could worsen, as he will ‘not negotiate’ with the parties responsible for the latest episode.

Noboa elaborated by saying the violence is ‘a reaction’ to the Government’s proposal to build a high-security prison for jailed gang leaders, but that has not been fully established, either.

In response, on January 8 the President a nationwide State of Emergency, set to last 60 days.

Travelers In The Country Are Subject To A Nighttime Curfew

This includes a national curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. directly impacting nighttime services across tourist destinations like Quito, the capital and cultural heart, Cuenca, the colonial gem, Guayaquil, the gateway to the Pacific, and many more.

There is no way of knowing when, or where crime will happen, or when or how an armed conflict will erupt, but if we’re to trust the President’s statement, it most certainly will, as military action will take place, and anti-Government forces will react.

Taking this information into account, it’s no surprise the U.S. Embassy has now issued an emergency alert for Americans in, or who are planning on traveling to Ecuador.

What Is The U.S. Government Saying?

The U.S. Department of State acknowledges the seriousness of the situation, noting that schools in Ecuador will operate virtually through January 12, and even remote work is being recommended ‘wherever possible’.

So far, Ecuador is yet to be demoted from Level 2 to 3 in the Travel Advisory listing, meaning the U.S. still does not discourage Americans from traveling, but seeing that usually happens with some delay, and it’s almost a given the country will be hit with a ‘Reconsider Travel’ advice at some point down the line.

Unless, of course, order is suddenly reinstated. For now, that looks unlikely.

While the advisory isn’t updated, the alert warns Americans to keep up to date with official communications from the government of Ecuador pertaining to the State of Emergency, ‘monitor credible media sources’ for information on ‘threats and violent activity’, and review Washington’s own safety advice.

How Does This Affect Tourists?

Ecuador has not shut down, and tourist services, hotels, and tourist attractions continue to operate normally, except they must adhere to the nighttime curfew.

Other than the threat of violence, the major immediate impact on the tourism scene is the theoretical halting of all nightlife across Ecuador.

In the medium to long term, there is no way of knowing how Ecuador will suffer from a potential eventual drop in tourism revenue.

After all, as charming and picturesque as it is, we wouldn’t be the first ones to book a flight out to Quito anytime soon, not until the dust settles and there is more information available.

For those who still intend to visit, flights to and from Ecuador continue to operate normally without changes in schedule or time, so far, as the curfew provides an exception for a number of essential workers, as well as individuals traveling via airports during curfew hours.

The next few weeks are notorious for being one of the busiest times of the year when it comes to air travel – and experts at the Transport Security Administration (TSA) are predicting airports to be even busier this year than last.

While TSA Administrator David Pekoske says the TSA is prepared to handle the surge in passengers during the winter holiday season, there are plenty of things we as travelers can do to help everyone’s journey run more smoothly.

In a bid to speed up the airport security experience and reduce traveling stress, the TSA has released a list of 10 steps travelers should follow.

While some points may seem obvious to seasoned travelers, it’s always worth checking in to see what the latest advice is because things can change quickly.

Packing Preparation

Before you get anywhere near the airport, you need to pack.

The TSA recommends beginning your packing with an empty bag so you don’t end up accidentally bringing items you didn’t intend to.

It also pays to check the “What Can I Bring?” section of the TSA website to make sure your bag is all good.

Get To The Airport Earlier Than Usual

This may seem super obvious, but you’d be amazed how you can reduce traveling stress by arriving earlier than you normally would when the airport is busy.

The TSA’s official advice is to arrive 2 hours before your flight, but there’s no harm in getting there a bit before that if you can spare it.

Have Your ID Ready

No one wants to be that person fumbling around in their bag or pockets for their ID when they finally get to the front of the queue.

Make sure you have the correct ID for your journey and have it in your hand when you’re in the screening line, says the TSA.

Advice On Wrapped Gifts

Got that snow globe for your Great Aunty Irma? How about the latest footballer’s autobiography for Dad? Traveling with gifts is super common at this time of year.

Sometimes, those items may need to be inspected, so you can make life easier for yourself by transporting any gifts unwrapped or by having them in gift bags or boxes that can easily be opened to be checked if required.

Firearms Foresight

If you are traveling with a firearm, you must ensure it is unloaded and packed in the correct kind of lockable hard case.

You must also declare the firearm at the ticket counter.

New Screening Technology

How you are screened varies from airport to airport, with new technology being implemented all the time.

The latest technology is Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, which can view your bags in 3D.

The main benefit of CT is that you don’t need to remove liquids or laptops from bags – so be aware of which lane you’re in and what technology is being used.

Time To Consider TSA PreCheck

Imagine waiting for just five minutes or less at the airport checkpoint.

That dream can be a reality if you sign up for TSA PreCheck – a system that allows you a much faster checking experience at the airport and costs just $70 for a five-year duration.

The PreCheck is becoming more popular with travelers and has 15 million members and counting.

While American travelers are enjoying or getting ready for spring break travel, the government of the United States has just issued a travel warning for one of the top destinations this season: Mexico.

The U.S. State Department shared on Monday an official travel warning addressing multiple concerns, recognizing safety threats, and sharing advice related to current events.

The document published on the website of the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico explains to travelers the main factors to consider when planning travel to this country, including risks of crime, drugs, assault, medication, and other warnings like drowning and arrests.

A list of actions to take when traveling to Mexico—like reading the Mexico Travel Advisory page, recommendations for safety applications that travelers can download, and general warnings— has also been included.

Considering top spring break destinations, authorities have specifically addressed locations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and other popular beach destinations in the Quintana Roo region.

Just a few weeks ago, the U.S. The State Department issued a special travel advisory for U.S. citizens visiting Cancun related to disputes and violent incidents between taxis and Uber drivers in the region.

While American authorities warn travelers about travel to Mexico, the Mexican government assures tourists that Mexico is a safe destination.

Considering the current situation in Mexico, there are new updates for tourists. Here’s what travelers should know about this recent travel advisory shared by the American government:

The U.S. government states that most visitors travel safely in Mexico —Cancun is still considered a safe destination for many travelers— but those planning a trip to this country should bear in mind multiple factors.

Regarding safety, travelers are encouraged to maintain high levels of awareness and avoid risky situations since crime (including violent crime) can occur even in popular tourist destinations like Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and Tulum, especially after dark.

U.S. citizens have also been victims of assault, and lonely or drunk travelers have been targeted.

Authorities also remind travelers about illegal actions and behaviors in Mexico and that Mexican law is different from American law, and travelers should keep this in mind.

The document highlights that guns and ammunition are illegal, as well as drug possession—including medical marijuana—, public urination, and drinking and driving. Those who violate these terms can be arrested.

U.S. citizens are warned about consuming drugs or unregulated alcohol as travelers have been injured by contaminated alcohol, synthetic drugs, and adulterated prescription pills. Counterfeit medication has also been reported. Travelers should consult with medical professionals and buy medicine from reputable establishments.

In case of emergency or need for medical attention, the document mentions that private hospitals might be more expensive in Mexico than in the United States and that payment in cash might be required. This is one reason it is always good to buy travel insurance.

The U.S. State Department has just issued a further 16 more new travel advisory updates. Posted on the Department of State’s travel advisory website just yesterday, the new travel advisories are the latest of several updates already this month, as the State Department and embassies around the world work around the clock to ensure that American travelers are kept in the loop and can make informed decisions regarding their travel plans.

Featuring a wide range of countries spanning several continents, yesterday’s travel advisories prove that even after the pandemic, there are still plenty of other things that travelers need to be wary of when traveling abroad. Here’s a look at which countries were affected by yesterday’s latest round of travel advisory updates, plus a reminder of what travel advisories are and the role they should play in any traveler’s trips abroad.

Travel Advisory Updates – Information For Travelers

Travel advisory updates are the State Departments way of keeping travelers up to date with issues they may encounter on their trips abroad. Every country in the world has a travel advisory page, regardless of its popularity, which contains concise, up to date information about security threats and concerns not just in the country as a whole, but often in specific regions where appropriate. A wide range of different issues are covered, ranging from everyday issues such as high crime rates to more pressing matters such as civil unrest and terrorism. Following the pandemic, travel advisories also contain an update from the CDC on the level of Covid-19 in each destination.

Travel advisories come in four different levels, each one indicating the severity of the risk travelers will face in that country. Level 1 travel advisories – the least severe warning – advises travelers to “exercise normal precautions,” whilst Level 4 – the most severe warning level – tells travelers “do not travel” to that destination. Despite the strict wording on the different levels, travel advisories do not have the power to prevent a traveler from heading to a certain destination, though they do provide travelers with the information required to make the decision of whether or not to travel in the first place.

Latest Travel Advisories – What Travelers Should Know

Yesterday’s travel advisory updates saw a further 7 countries issued with Level 1 travel advisories, bringing the total number of Level 1 countries up to 81. Those 7 countries and their CDC-determined Covid-19 levels are:

Angola (low Covid-19 level), Comoros (low Covid-19 level), Dominica (unknown Covid-19 level), Equatorial Guinea (low Covid-19 level), Fiji (high Covid-19 level), Poland (high Covid-19 level) and Togo (moderate Covid-19 level).

There were also five additions to the Level 2 category, which advises travelers to exercise increased caution. They are as follows:
- Bangladesh: exercise increased caution in Bangladesh due to crime, terrorism, and kidnapping. Low level of Covid-19.
- Bosnia and Herzegovina: exercise increased caution in Bosnia and Herzegovina due to terrorism and land mines. High level of Covid-19.
- India: exercise increased caution in India due to crime and terrorism. Moderate level of Covid-19.
- Laos: exercise increased caution to Laos due to civil unrest. Unknown level of Covid-19
- Philippines: exercise increased caution to the Philippines due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping. Moderate level of Covid-19.
Four countries were awarded Level 3 travel advisories, which asks travelers to reconsider travel. El Salvador, which has a moderate level of Covid-19, was deemed to be Level 3 due to its high levels of crime. That was also the case for Honduras, which also has a high level of Covid-19 according to the CDC. Travelers are also asked to reconsider travel to moderate Covid-19-level Ethiopia due to armed conflict, civil unrest, communications disruptions, crime, and the potential for terrorism and kidnapping in border areas. Those with travel plans involving Moldova (moderate level of Covid-19) are also asked to reconsider them, due to the country’s close proximity to the conflict in Ukraine.

The latest round of travel advisory updates saw no countries awarded the most severe Level 4 update – but that doesn’t mean that things can’t change quickly. In addition to making sure they read the travel advisory page for their destinations this summer, travelers should also ensure they purchase a good travel insurance policy to ensure they are covered in the event that something does go wrong.

Only 20 Percent Of Travelers In June Had No Issues, Here’s How You Can Join Them

According to a survey by Bankrate, only 2 out of 10 travelers were able to complete their trips without any travel problems during the month of June. As summer has unfolded, there’s been turmoil in the aviation sector as airports and airlines have struggled with short-staffing. A significant increase in travel demand has made it difficult for the small amount of staff available to keep up. And to add fuel to the fire, inflation is higher than ever, making life more difficult for all travelers and airlines alike. As a result, about 80% of travelers surveyed reported some type of travel-related issue during their trips during the month of June.

Most Common Travel-Related Issues
- 57% of travelers reported higher costs than they were used to
- 26% reported difficulty finding availability with accommodations and flights
- 29% reported long wait times
- 27% reported unsatisfactory customer service
- 14% reported the loss of money due to canceled or disrupted plans
So What Can You Do?

While there is no way to 100% guarantee that you will complete your trip without disruption, there are ways to mitigate your risk. Before embarking on any travel, it is essential to know your passenger rights, what to do in case of lost luggage, and how to minimize your chances of losing luggage.

Combating Higher Costs

Unfortunately, inflation is higher than it has been in four decades. As a result, finding flights and accommodation that match previous year’s vacation budgets can be difficult. This summer, in particular, may be worth looking into a cruise, as it is likely the best value for money vacation this year. For costs while traveling, it can be tougher to save when prices are high. To minimize costs, be sure to use a credit card that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees, try sticking to local foods that are often more affordable, and take advantage of attractions that offer free admission.

Combating Low Availability

It can be difficult to travel when nearly everything is already booked, but not all hope is lost! Here are a few things you can try when having difficulty finding accommodation.
- Call the hotel. Sometimes availability isn’t always up to date on booking websites, so it may be worth reaching out in person to see if any rooms are available.
- Get creative. Are you traveling with a group of four? Would one larger room work rather than two separate, or vice-versa? If the room you want isn’t available, there may still be a way to make it work with your group if you are flexible.
Combating Long Wait Times

Nobody likes waiting in line, but that is the unfortunate reality facing travelers this summer. Short staff has led to long wait times for airport security worldwide. If you are lucky enough to be flying out of certain airports, you may be able to skip the TSA line for free with advanced reservation. Otherwise, programs such as TSA precheck and CLEAR are your best bet for getting through airport security more quickly. While the programs are not free, they typically save a lot of time going through the TSA lines.

Combating Unsatisfactory Customer Service

There isn’t a way to force a service representative to ensure you have a good experience. Still, there are things you can do to heighten your chances of a good experience. As hard as it may be, staying positive throughout the interaction will do more for your case than anything else. Aviation staff have had a tough year, and they are much more likely to be on your side of an issue if you are easy to deal with and explain your situation efficiently. If you run into bad customer service and your problem remains unsolved, escalate the case until you’ve got what you need.

Combating Monetary Loss From Cancelled or Disrupted Plans

It’s nice when everything goes according to plan, but you should plan for the worst this summer. As cancellations and delays continue to interrupt travel plans, it is more important than ever to ensure you are protected. One of the best ways to financially protect yourself when planning a trip is to get travel insurance. Travel insurance often covers some of the “non-refundable” items on your trip’s checklist.

Putting It All Together

If you’d like to be a part of the 20% of travelers who experienced no travel-related issues, following some of the guidelines above will push you in the right direction. Canada Issues New Travel Advisory Due To Monkeypox

As monkeypox spreads globally, the Canadian government has issued a travel advisory for Canadians traveling overseas. The new Level 2 travel advisory suggests Canadians should practice enhanced health precautions following the emergence of monkeypox.

The Canadian government released the travel advisory on June 7, 2022.

The Full Details Of The Level 2 Travel Advisory

According to the Canadian government, a Level 2 travel health notice “indicates an increased risk to travellers or certain groups of travellers (for example, pregnant women, campers, people visiting friends and relatives) and reminds them to practise enhanced health precautions.”

The Canadian government suggests all Canadians should follow these precautions:
- Use personal protective equipment—such as masks—to minimize the spread of monkeypox
- Delaying all travel until the risk is lower
- Avoiding higher-risk activities
- Taking recommended vaccinations for some groups
- Washing hands at all times, especially after being in close contact with some people
- Being careful if you’re attending mass gatherings or parties
- Being aware of any symptoms, such as a new rash
The Canadian government has issued the advisory if you’re traveling to these destinations:
- Argentina
- Australia
- Austria
- Belgium
- Bolivia
- The Czech Republic
- Denmark
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Hungary
- Ireland
- Israel
- Italy
- Malta
- Mexico

- Netherlands

- Spain

- Switzerland

The Canadian government says: “During your travel, you may be subject to procedures at your destination put in place to limit the spread of monkeypox, such as isolation, should you become infected. You may have limited access to timely and appropriate health care should you become ill, and may experience delays in returning home.”

“PHAC is working closely with international, provincial, and territorial health partners to gather information on this evolving issue. Further investigations are underway to determine the likely source of infection and to limit further onward spread.”

The Canadian government says you should see a healthcare professional if you develop symptoms when you’re traveling. In addition, if you have monkeypox symptoms during the flight: “tell the flight attendant before you land or the border services officer as you enter the country.”

What Is Monkeypox?

The Canadian government states: “Monkeypox is a disease that is caused by a virus. It is regularly found in parts of Central and West Africa, where it has been re-emerging in recent years”

They suggest monkeypox can spread in three ways:
- From animals to humans
- From person to person
- Through direct contact with contaminated objects
In addition, monkeypox can spread from person to person via close contact in the following ways:
- Scabs or skin lesions (which may resemble chickenpox)
- Body fluids or blood
- Mucosal surfaces (including eyes, mouth, throat, and rectum.)
- Contaminated clothing or linens
- Respiratory droplets (coughs and sneezes) may transmit the monkeypox virus, but scientists are still learning.
However, the Canadian government suggests that: “symptoms usually last between 14 and 28 days. Monkeypox is usually a mild, self-limited disease. In rare situations, people may become very sick and death may occur.”

They add: “Treatment for monkeypox is mainly supportive. Vaccines and medications for prevention and treatment are not commercially available at this time.”

Have Other Countries Issued Travel Advisories?

The Canadian government isn’t the first nation to introduce a travel advisory for monkeypox. The United States issued a travel advisory due to monkeypox almost two weeks ago.

The CDC advises Americans to avoid:
- Close contact with sick people, particularly those with skin or genital lesions.
- Touching any dead or live wild animals, such as rats, squirrels, monkeys, and apes.
- Handling all materials used by monkeypox-infected individuals as they could be contaminated.

The US State Department has issued 13 new travel advisories for June. The latest updates, which were uploaded onto the State Department’s website on May 31st, provide information that aims to keep American travelers safe and well informed ahead of their travels. These most recent updates feature a range of countries which are located in regions that are bound to be amongst the most popular with American travelers this summer, such as Europe and the Caribbean.

With travel this summer expected to rival pre-pandemic figures, travel advisories are bound to play an important pre-travel role for those jetting off around the world this year. Here’s a look at which countries were affected in the most recent updates, plus a recap of what the travel advisory system is and how it helps American travelers.

Travel Advisories – An Explanation For Travelers

The State Department’s travel advisories are helpful updates that provide information to travelers about destinations around the world. Each update assigns a risk level to a destination, with Level 1 being the lowest risk level and Level 4 being the highest risk level. Warnings are updated frequently as and when they are needed, reflecting the ever changing risks such as crime, terrorism and health concerns that are present in each destination.

Along with a warning from the State Department, each travel advisory update also contains information from the CDC on the level of Covid-19 in each destination, allowing travelers to know what they may be getting themselves into if they do decide to travel. Whilst they play an important role in keeping travelers informed about real and current threats they may face and should always be consulted, they have no legal power to prevent travel – meaning the decision to travel is ultimately down to the traveler.

Recent Travel Advisory Updates – What Travelers Should Know

The latest travel advisories to be posted featured updates from all four warning levels. The Level 1 updates are as follows:
- St. Kitts and Nevis – exercise normal precautions. CDC indicates a moderate level of Covid-19
- Anguilla – exercise normal precautions. CDC indicates a high level of Covid-19
- Kuwait – exercise normal precautions, travelers should not visit the border region with Iraq. CDC indicates a low level of Covid-19
The Level 2 updates are:
- Bosnia and Herzegovina – exercise increased caution due to terrorism and land mines. CDC indicates a moderate level of Covid-19
- Dominican Republic – travelers should exercise increased caution due to crime. CDC indicates a moderate level of Covid-19
- Tunisia – exercise increased caution in Tunisia due to terrorism. The country also has several no-go regions. CDC indicates a moderate level of Covid-19
- Turks and Caicos Islands – exercise increased caution due to crime. CDC indicates a high level of Covid-19
Level 3 travel advisories carry a warning that travelers should reconsider travel to these destinations. The recent Level 3 updates are:
- Guyana – risk of crime. Covid-19 level is moderate according to CDC
- Jamaica – risk of crime, with several areas travelers should not travel to. According to the the CDC, Jamaica has a high level of Covid-19
- Mauritania – risk of both terrorism and crime. The country’s Covid-19 level is low according to the CDC
- Poland – travelers should reconsider their trips to Poland due to its Covid-19 related restrictions. It has moderate levels of Covid-19 according to the CDC
Finally, two countries were awarded Level 4 warnings. These warnings explicitly tell travelers “Do Not Travel” to the destinations in question. The Level 4 warnings are as follows:
- Burma (Myanmar) – do not travel due to areas of civil unrest and armed conflict. CDC indicates a low level of Covid-19
- Moldova – do not travel due to armed conflict in neighboring Ukraine, and the unresolved conflict between the breakaway region of Transnistria and the central government. Moderate level of Covid-19 according to the CDC
