These U.S. Airlines Had The Most Delays And Cancelations In July

Air travel in the United States and the rest of the world has had a rough summer, with some airports even capping the number of flights allowed per day. Demand has skyrocketed after years of being unable to travel due to the pandemic. Now that the world is easing restrictions and opening back up, travelers are desperate for a taste of freedom again. Unfortunately, the aviation industry has struggled to meet the overwhelming demand due to staffing shortages. As a result, delays, cancellations, and lost luggage have plagued travelers all summer. Using data from aviation analytics company OAG, we have determined the U.S. airlines with the most delays and cancellations for July.

According to OAG, gate arrival times within 15 minutes of their originally scheduled arrivals are considered on time. Similarly, as long as a plane departs within a 15-minute window of its originally scheduled departure time, it would be regarded as an on-time departure. Keeping this in mind, the following U.S. airlines had the most delays for July.

Top 5 U.S. Airlines With The Most Delays In July
1. Allegiant Air – 39% of Flights Delayed (4,811 Total Flights Delayed)
2. JetBlue Airways – 35% of Flights Delayed (10,142 Total Flights Delayed)
3. Southwest Airlines – 32% of Flights Delayed (39,187 Total Flights Delayed)
4. Frontier Airlines – 28% of Flights Delayed (4,048 Total Flights Delayed)
5. American Airlines – 27% of Flights Delayed (47,170 Total Flights Delayed)
Have Delays Gotten Any Better?

Yes and no. The airlines above ranked against each other in about the same order in June. However, each airline’s percentage of flights that were delayed has started to decline, with the exception of Southwest. Although it did improve, Allegiant Air has claimed the title for most delays from a U.S. airline for two months in a row. In June, Allegiant Air had 41% of their flights delayed. Jetblue was also the 2^nd worst for delays in June, with 39% of their flights delayed. Frontier and Southwest were nearly tied at 30.7% and 30.4%, respectively. Finally, American had 29.2% of their flights delayed in June.

Top 5 U.S. Airlines With The Most Cancellations In July

Delays aren’t ideal when trying to get away on a much-needed holiday, but cancelations can completely ruin a trip. The U.S. airlines with the most cancellations for July don’t follow the same trend as delays, with Southwest and Frontier not even making the top 5.
1. American Airlines – 2.4% of Flights Canceled (4,240 Total Flights Canceled)
2. United Airlines – 2.4% of Flights Canceled (3,075 Total Flights Canceled)
3. Allegiant Air – 1.9% of Flights Canceled (237 Total Flights Canceled)
4. Delta Airlines – 1.7% of Flights Canceled (2,376 Total Flights Canceled)
5. JetBlue Airways – 1.6% of Flights Canceled (469 Total Flights Canceled)
Have Cancelations Gotten Any Better?

Cancelations have improved between July and August, with each airline making improvements throughout the month of July. American was the worst airline for cancelations for both months, with 4.3% of its flights canceled in June. Allegiant trailed close behind at 4%, followed by Delta at 3.7%, United at 3.3%, and JetBlue at 2.9%. As demand for travel continues to ease as fall looms, the downward trend in cancelations is likely to continue.

As travelers continue to navigate the chaos seen this summer, it is important to know their passenger rights, tips for making it through the chaos, and how to minimize their chances of losing luggage. From the data above, things seem to be improving slightly. However, travelers should still take precautions as airlines struggle to keep up.

Americans Will No Longer Be Able To Enter The US With Expired Passports Starting In July

The U.S. Department of State has an important message for American citizens traveling in the long term, or who are due to fly internationally soon. Starting in July, expired U.S. passports will no longer be considered valid documents when returning to the United States, as certain pandemic-era measures are due to be revoked.

Throughout the Covid crisis, the U.S. Government allowed Americans who had been stuck abroad indefinitely, and whose passports might have ceased being valid amid the never-ending cycle of restrictions, to travel back home on an expired document. The ordinance had been extended a number of times, while travelers still faced a high degree of travel unpredictability.

Now that Covid is close to being considered an endemic disease, and a majority of travel curbs have been loosened, the U.S. is finally revising this once-lax travel policy:

Americans Will Be Denied Boarding If Their Passports Are Not Valid From July 1

As those who have been closely following the latest updates on the websites of major U.S. Embassies lately will already know, after June 30, 2022, U.S. citizens who remain overseas with an expired passport will no longer be able to use it as a travel document for returning to their home country. Instead, they are now urged to apply for a new passport.

Since the announcement was made, several U.S. Embassies around the world were quick to update their own travel guidance, including the American diplomatic missions in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, France, Germany, and several other countries. As early as July 1, only passports that meet expiry requirements will be accepted.

In a message to U.S. citizens holding an invalid travel document and who are abroad at the moment, the Embassies have collectively advised them to seek assistance in obtaining a replacement passport ahead of traveling. As the U.S. Embassy in Albania reiterates, Americans are eligible for ‘temporary passports’ in cases of emergency travel.

These passports can be issued when a travel date cannot be postponed, and the time required for applying for a regular passport would prevent departure. In these situations, they should contact an official U.S. representation in the foreign country they are in – whether it’s Albania or any of the aforementioned nations.

The application process may vary, but same-day issuance is usually available on a case-by-case basis. Nevertheless, Embassies remind travelers that, in ‘certain circumstances’, additional information may be required, or they may refer cases to the Department of State for further evaluation. For that reason, they are warned against making travel plans in advance.

Change In Travel Rules Follows A Global Reopening Trend

Prior to the tightening of the rule, all U.S. citizens qualified for travel to the United States on an expired passport, so long as the flight back was a ‘direct return’, or included a short-term, air-side transit in a foreign country. U.S. authorities only required that the document had previously valid for a total of 10 years, from the date of issue, before expiring.

As Covid is no longer prompting border closures worldwide, and the world is quickly reopening for tourism, the grace period for void travel documents is poised to elapse. After all, we are approaching a stage in the pandemic where Covid is not seen as a seriously disruptive health threat, especially in Western states that are progressively easing travel rules.

In spite of the positive trend, Americans are reminded holding valid passports is the main prerequisite for international travel – and, soon enough, for entering the United States. Lastly, all travelers are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Program (STEP), including U.S. nationals that are abroad.

STEP is a free service allowing Americans that are either traveling for extensive periods of time, or living in other countries, to register their trip with Embassies or Consulates that are closest to them. This will help U.S. officials assist them during unforeseen events, and strengthen communication between both parts.

Americans May Not Need Passports To Travel To Certain Destinations

It is worth noting that, even though passports are needed for the vast majority of international flights departing from the U.S., there are a number of destinations known to have struck bilateral agreements with the White House, allowing Americans to visit bureaucracy-free – even when they do not have passports.

That is still the exception rather than the rule, and the U.S. Department of State reaffirms Americans will be denied from boarding a plane when attempting to travel to an international destination without valid documentation. As pre-pandemic regulations are reinstated, the best option here is to get a passport, or renew an expired one, as soon as possible.

Travelers Could Need A Booster To Visit Bali Starting In July

Quickly after relaxing some of its most stringent Covid mandates and allowing vaccinated tourists to visit with few limitations, Indonesia is mulling a new package of restrictions to be introduced following a viral rebound. For the double vaccinated, this could mean showing proof of a booster when entering the country, including the province of Bali.

Recently, South East Asia has taken steps to reopen following two years of total closure, however hesitantly. Indonesia is no exception, having relaunched Visa On Arrival for a number of foreign nationals visiting Bali earlier in March, and even exempting vaccinated tourists from the dreaded pre-departure tests.

While it seemed before as if Indonesia would not deviate from its reopening path, now we are not so sure:

Indonesian Minister Hints At New Booster If Cases Continue Rising

Starting in late 2021, Indonesia has been moving away from its harsh pandemic policies, allowing immunized travelers to return without quarantine or testing, and boosting its tourism-dependent economy after months of severe stagnation. The recent relaxation led many to believe the nation would revoke even more rulings in the weeks to come.

That may no longer be the case, after Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, one of Indonesia’s top officials regarding border policies, suggested a new booster requirement for travel may be enacted in the (likely) event that Covid infections continue rising.

Prior to this month, pandemic rates in Indonesia had been on a laudable downward trend, influenced by the Government’s swift actions and comprehensive vaccination campaign. Regrettably, Covid is spreading again – fast. According to Reuters, Indonesia is reporting its highest daily averages since February 20, when cases peaked.

The case count may not be high enough yet to overwhelm the nation’s health sector – there are 1,485 new infections each day, or 3% of the peak – but the Government is determined to keep them from increasing any further. Effectively, local authorities are targeting tourists once more, even after WHO expressly told countries international travel is not a risk.

Is There An Actual Risk Indonesia Will Impose A Booster Mandate?

In Pandjaitan’s own words, should the number of cases continue climbing in July, they will introduce booster doses as a travel requirement for ‘the common good’. Despite the warning, the Minister reaffirmed the pandemic remains under control across Indonesia, even as the BA4 and BA5 Omicron sub-variants disseminate.

‘Singapore, which is close to us, sees a high increase in cases’, the Minister added, referring to the neighboring destination that has removed all testing for vaccinated travelers a couple of months ago. ‘Malaysia also reports a high case surge’, he stressed, mentioning yet another country that has eased testing rules, asking ‘all to be disciplined’.

If the data shared by Reuters is anything to go by, the Covid situation in Indonesia has a tendency to aggravate. Unless there is a clear shift in pandemic trends, vacationers with their hearts set on Bali, and who are yet to receive an additional dose, will need to update their vaccination card in order to be granted permission to travel.

So far, Bali’s entry rules have not changed. The province still considers foreigners who have been given two doses of an approved vaccine to be fully immunized, and thus eligible to bypass both testing and quarantine orders, but the fact that Indonesian Ministers are openly discussing tightening existing rules should not be overlooked.

What Are The Rules For Visiting Bali Right Now?

Currently, in order to enter Bali, travelers must show one of the following documents at the border:
- A vaccination certificate (two doses are enough for now)
- A recovery certificate issued up to 30 days before departure
Those who fail to produce one of the above will have to undergo testing on arrival, and observe a five-day quarantine until a second RT-PCR test is performed prior to release. We do not know, at this point, whether the non-vaccinated, or those holding a recovery certificate, will be allowed to enter Bali if a booster mandate is issued.

Entering Indonesia now, most travelers, regardless of vaccination status, must apply for a Visa On Arrival costing IDR 500.000, or USD 33.76. U.S., Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand and European Union citizens are all eligible to obtain this entry permit once landing in Bali, or eight other entry points across Indonesia.

- Sam Ratulangi North Sulawesi

- Hang Nadim Batam, Riau Islands
- Zainuddin Abdul Majid West Nusa Tenggara
The visa is valid for up to 30 days, and can be extended once a traveler is inside Indonesia. Those seeking an extension must submit an application to the Immigration Office, requesting an additional 30 days. When planning to stay longer, digital nomads will soon be able to apply for a 5-year visa to reside in Bali, tax-free.

Lastly, tourists must install the Peduli Lundungi application ahead of flying to Bali, and may be subject to a temperature check once landing. There may be different requirements in place across separate provinces, including mandatory proof of a booster dose in order to travel to select domestic destinations.

For that reason, tourists planning to travel beyond Bali are advised to contact their airlines for more information.
