Mexico Dominates Top 5 Island Destinations In North America

Mexico has three of the top five islands in North America, according to a poll conducted by the renowned travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler. Every year, their editors compile the world’s favorite destinations based on their readers’ preferences, and this time, those surveyed sent a clear message that the Riviera Maya remains highly sought-after for beach breaks.

Throughout the pandemic, while most of the world shut down for tourism, the Mexican Caribbean remained open and continue to welcome foreigners, irrespective of their immunization status and with very few entry requirements. As a result, Mexico easily outpaced other global competitors and is on track to claim the unofficial title of King of Tourism.

It may have taken a health crisis for the more skeptical tourist to turn their eyes to Mexico, but now that they have seen firsthand all the wonders it hides, they don’t want to go anywhere else:

Mexico Is Officially America’s Favorite Sunny Destination

The Mexican Caribbean is easily Mexico’s best-selling product when it comes to international tourism. Home to an internationalized Cancun and featuring an extensive list of traditional fishing villages and historical sites of invaluable importance, it has arguably become the top-rated sunny destination in North America.

This winter alone, the state of Quintana Roo is projected to host nine million visitors, easily surpassing an already record-breaking 2019, and this fast-paced recovery has shown no signs of slowing down. Naturally, part of the Riviera’s irresistible appeal lies in a triad of islands that have been recently recognized for their enviable advances on the tourism front.

According to Condé Nast Traveler (CN Traveler), a respected source that has been tracking travel trends for more than three decades, three of North America’s top five island destinations are now claimed by the Mexican Caribbean. For the 35th edition of their Readers’ Choice Awards, the publication heard 240,000 readers, and the masses have spoken:

Isla Holbox is 2022’s trendiest North American island.

Isla Holbox Is The Number One Island Destination

Isla Holbox, situated north of the Yucatán Peninsula in the Quintana Roo state, is officially the region’s best-loved island. Isla Holbox is famous for its wildlife, which includes elegant pink flamingos wandering turquoise water beaches. Moreover, it is car-free, making it much more quaint than the continental Quintana Roo.

Overall, it has a score of 88.96 on CN Traveler’s ranking, placing it at number one. It was almost a tie between Isla Holbox and the second-best placed, the beautiful Isla Mujeres, but the former still came out ahead with slightly more points. Interestingly, these two islands do not have a commercial airport.

While Cancun, Tulum, and the like have direct international links to cities across the United States and Canada, most visitors attempting to reach Isla Holbox do so by ferry, even though there is a small aerodrome hosting air taxis and other private jets. Similarly, the gateway into Isla Mujeres, located only 13 kilometers off the Cancun coast, is also Cancun Airport.

These islands’ relative exclusivity, at least when it comes to the incredibly well-connected Cozumel, proves North American travelers are favoring destinations that offer more peace and quiet and are not as overrun by tourists as the coast. Regarding its score, Isla Mujeres ranks in the runner-up slot with an enviable 88.01 points – marginally fewer than Holbox.

Cozumel Rounds Out The Top Five

When it comes to the aforementioned Cozumel, the Riviera Maya’s most popular island based on arrival figures alone, it charts at a lower number five, scoring 80.22 points. Rounding out the ranking, the island is served by an international airport, unlike Holbox and Isla Mujeres, and is much more densely populated, with over 100,000 inhabitants.

The full top five can be seen below, Mexico being the definitive winner with three out of five entries:
1. Isla Holbox, Mexico
2. Isla Mujeres, Mexico
3. Cape Breton, Canada
4. Vancouver Island, Canada
5. Cozumel, Mexico
Additionally, readers elected Cape Breton and Vancouver Island as the third and fourth-best islands in North America, respectively. These Canadian gems are the only ones in the list that have not been attributed to winter breaks or beach holidays: Cape Breton has a rugged coastline and dramatic scenery, while Vancouver Island is a well-known metropolitan hub.

One of Mexico’s colonial cities has just been named ‘the most beautiful’ in the country, beating household names like Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and even the wider Mayan Riviera to the number one spot. The honor was bestowed by Mexico’s own Travel Awards, and it’s fair to say many were surprised with how voting went.

Mexico’s fame as the King of Tourism may be almost exclusively attributed to its Caribbean hubs and a plethora of well-preserved pre-Columbian settlements. While Mexico’s Mayan World is still largely responsible for the country’s record-breaking numbers, yet another facet of its multicultural appeal is emerging as an equally-powerful attraction.

Namely, Mexico’s colonial era cities, that are among some of the first European settlements in the Americas, with one in particular eclipsing all others in beauty and charm:

Mexico’s Beauty Lies In Its Multicultural Past

Mexico Travel Awards is a yearly event where the nation’s top tourism authorities gather to celebrate achievements across different sectors of the industry, such as the most outstanding and best performing municipalities. In any case, there is one trophy not based purely on broken records and booking trends.

This year, 20 municipalities were nominated for the title of Mexico’s Most Beautiful, including San Miguel de Allende, a Neo-Gothic/Baroque fusion that has been rediscovered by the American audience in recent months, Merida, the Yucatan state’s number one city, and of course, Mexico City, the vibrant, sprawling mess of a capital.

Despite being strong contenders, none of them took the award home in the end. Mexico’s crown jewel turns out to be the unsung Guanajuato City, the capital of its namesake state and one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the Americas – even before Spain’s path got intertwined with pre-Columbian Mexico’s.

Much like the aforementioned San Miguel, Guanajuato is famous around the world for nearly-intact colonial monuments, though on a much larger scale. Its Old Town, or Ciudad vieja district has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site all the way back in 1988, not only due to its architectural wonders, but the History it carries.

The Rising Trend Of ‘Colonial’ Tourism

Guanajuato was founded by Spaniards on the site of other native American settlements in the mid-16th century, and served at one point as the world’s top silver exporter before turning its back to the Empire and joining the fight for an independent Mexico. Naturally, this turbulent, yet fascinating past has been engraved in the city’s urban landscape.

It is composed of a maze of narrow winding streets lined with colorful traditional houses resembling those found in Iberian Europe – Spain and Portugal – and it is dotted with Baroque gems, including the Valenciana Temple and the most easily recognized landmark, the Saint Francis church, featuring its iconic bright yellow hue.

Although it is not as huge as Cancun or its main rival Mexico City yet, Guanajuato is surely becoming more popular every year. The state itself, which carries the same name, has witnessed a steady increase in arrival figures from 2007 to 2018 culminating in 956,000+ yearly visitors. However, that was years before Mexico’s Renaissance had officially begun.

This year, eight to nine million visitors are expected, a sharp increase from 2018’s figures, just shy of the millionth landmark. This proves Guanajuato has a key role to play in promoting Mexico as a diverse destination, and a world capital for culture acknowledged for more than just its pristine beaches and luxury all-inclusives.

The top 4 most voted cities, excluding Guanajuato, were:

The Mexico Travel Awards is, in fact, a tourist-voted award, proving Guanajuato is indeed the most appealing city out of all the twenty surveyed. Other than being lauded for its architectural grandeur and contribution to History, it has been described as a ‘culturally rich city with numerous museums, theaters, music venues and festivals‘.

All of the top five cities have one thing in common: they have managed to retain their Spanish-era allure, in spite of the turning of the centuries and the overwhelming wave of industrialization that spread across North America throughout the 20th, and early 21st centuries, tearing down everything ancient standing on its path.

According to the information shared by the Mexican travel news site Reportur, in the report, Best Day shared the top 9 destinations for locals:

- Riviera Nayarit
- Ixtapa
- Mazatlán
- Huatulco
The report studied Mexican searches and reservations and those were the most visited during the last few weeks. Santiago Elijovich, Best Day Vicepresident, said: “Mexicans really want to go on vacation and summer is an ideal time to do it. This was reflected in this season’s sales since we obtained an increase of 68% compared to the summer of 2021, which makes us very happy”

It is not a surprise that top destinations like Cancun, Acapulco, and Puerto Vallarta rank among the first results. We’ve also noticed common grounds with American vacation interests: Cancun ranked as the most popular destination for American travelers.

Mexicans Prefer Beach Destinations

Best Day’s report stated that Mexicans prefer beach destinations. The top 9 locations are famous for the beautiful beaches with delicious weather and pristine waters, and represent 70% of the sales for vacation purchases made by Mexicans.

The travel agency also highlighted that 40% of Mexicans prefer to book vacation bundles —including hotels and transportation or tours—, and 33% only hotels. The average stay in the Mexican Caribbean is 5 days and on the Pacific coast 4 days. Mexicans have also made reservations for 3 to 4 people on average, demonstrating that summer is ideal for family vacations.

Best Day’s CEO, Alejandro Calligaris, said that it was a good sign to see Mexican travelers’ interest increase. Calligaris stated: “Surviving this crisis and learning from it points us to several opportunities for the future. It became clear that, after so many restrictions, people really want to travel, and it is a dream that we can make come true. And that comes with new travel habits, which we have to be aware of.”

Mexicans and foreign visitors are eager to enjoy the beauty and the relaxing benefits of the spectacular Mexican beaches.

The favorite destinations in the Mexican Caribbean are Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and the Riviera Maya. The Quintana Roo region has been one of the favorites for travelers from all over the world and it also pleases Mexican travelers’ interest.

More Immigration Staff Being Brought In To Reduce Waiting

One of the most stressful, and anxiety-inducing procedures for travelers, especially those going abroad for the first time, is braving immigration. Besides the usual bureaucracy involved with carrying all the relevant documentation, such as a valid passport and hotel bookings, waiting in line to be stamped into Mexico by a border officer can easily take longer than an hour during the peak season.

Lately, the risk of missing travel connections, or hotel transfers upon arrival due to airport bottlenecks has greatly increased, mainly because the industry has not been able to cope with a surging travel demand amid its own worker shortage. In stark contrast with Mexico City, where air traffic congestion is yet to be tackled, Cancun Airport is a much safer bet.

Authorities are bringing in more immigration staff to deal with the surging demand, with 130 new hires having been confirmed, bringing the number of available border agents to 329. This will ensure Americans are screened much quicker, whether their final destination is Cancun or they’re on a connecting flight elsewhere within Mexico.

Digital Kioks For Automated Passport Control

Serving the most popular vacation hotspot in the country, Cancun Airport can get absolutely packed in the high season, which at times can make it an extremely unpleasant hub to transit. Nevertheless, the local Government never got comfortable in their ceaseless struggle to improve security wait times, and now lines will move much faster with the introduction of new digital kiosks.

While they have not been operating staff-free yet due to pending changes in Mexico’s border regulations, these kiosks will allow Americans to automatically check in and out of Cancun simply by scanning their passports, as easily as entering their own home country. At the time, even airport authorities urged visitors to depart as early as 5 hours not to miss their flights as traffic jams were expected. Now, some serious progress has been made in their bid to ease traffic.

According to the municipal government, this is how long it takes to transit all roads leading to the city, from the airport:
- Boulevard Colosio – 34 minutes
- Huyacan Avenue – 38 minutes
- Kukulcan Boulevard – 62 minutes
These average times correspond to peak hours when traffic is at busiest, meaning the drive can be much shorter. Notably, the best option for Cancun arrivals in getting to their resort faster remains Boulevard Colosio, at just 34 minutes. In comparison, those attempting to reach the Hotel Zone via Kukulcan Boulevard face an hour-long drive.

Immigration Form Removed

Lastly, Cancun has scrapped its customs form passengers were made to fill out upon landing, where they were expected to provide their passport number, birth date, hotel address, specify the purpose of travel, and other information. Albeit easy to complete, this document was hindering the smooth influx of visitors into Mexico, as prior to the decision, they were required to first complete the questionnaire ahead of proceeding to border control.

Starting this week, tourists are no longer required to present the FMM form, nor retain part of it for screening purposes once again when leaving Cancun, making the city the first major destination in Mexico to remove what many saw as a bureaucratic step. Following the move, we expect border movements to be much quicker in Cancun compared to the rest of the country.

Cancun Is The Best Place To Fly To Mexico From Abroad

Taking into account the four measures listed above, we can safely infer that Cancun is, without a question, the best place to fly into Mexico currently:
- Wait lines have been significantly reduced
- Major infrastructure projects are ensuring visitors get in and out of Cancun Airport in the shortest time possible
- Airport authorities are keen on dropping bureaucracy and streamlining border crossings
- More staff is being deployed to avoid the infamous immigration bottlenecks and improve the tourist experience
Additionally, Cancun has remained at Level 2 Travel Advisory in the latest U.S. Department of State revision of travel risks in Mexico. In other words, the pearl of the Caribbean is one of the safest destinations south of the border.

Without a question, Mexico is America’s favorite vacation spot. U.S. citizens comprise the vast majority of foreigners visiting the tourism-dependent country, and are behind its rebound following the Covid crisis. Now, the top 5 cities Americans love the most in Mexico have been revealed, and while old classics featured, the list includes other surprises as well.

Between January and May 2022, Mexico reported a 65.8% increase in American arrivals compared to last year’s figures. In total, 5 million and 530 thousand more tourists traveled south of the border this year so far, and that number is likely to keep rising now that social curbs have been dropped and the U.S. no longer requires testing for returning citizens.

The whole of Mexico is brimming with tourists, but the cities with the largest concentrations, according to official data provider Datatur, are the following:

The home of tequila and the traditional mariachi music, Guadalajara is the fifth busiest entry point into Mexico this year. Unpredictable Stay Lengths Will Disappear As Pilot Program Is Tested In Cancun

Tourists arriving in Cancun will now automatically receive 180 days to stay in Mexico, after a frustrating piece of paperwork was removed from the immigration process. The news will be a breath of fresh air for Digital Nomads, in particular, who utilize long stays.

The decision has been made to drop the FMM or Forma Multipla Migratoria in the Cancun airport. It should be noted that only Cancun International Airport is piloting the program, so anyone visiting through other airports in Mexico will still be expected to abide by the old protocol and may receive far less than the 180 days. It may be expanded if the Cancun trial goes well and no problems arise.

For years, the Mexican immigration department used the FMM, to help regulate the tourists entering the country. The system was a frustrating one and could add an hour or more to the immigration process. Although there was an option for tourists to fill the form out online, this often was futile, and those tourists ended up taking longer.

Passengers on planes were typically given the form on the plane to begin filling out, but as many had already filled it online, they assumed they didn’t need to, helping create further backlogs in the immigration line after they were turned back by officers.

As the airports continue to fight massive lines and wait times, the new rules will hopefully alleviate some of the pressure and ease the process for tourists.

Under the FMM system, tourists were left at the mercy of the immigration officer as to how long a stay they received. In years prior to Covid, 180 days was an expected allotment of time, but unexplained reasons during the pandemic saw the officers becoming far more specific in their decisions.

Even if a tourist explained they wanted to stay for a month or more, the decision was left to the officer, and a random amount of days could be scrawled at the top of the paper. As no explicit announcement was made regarding the change in stance, many tourists barely registered the number of days given and would often overstay.

One of our own writers traveled into the country via Mexico City, unaware of the rule changes. He was given 32 days, while his partner was given 13. Neither of them was aware of the number of days offered until they were denied boarding a bus as one of them had overstayed.

There was also the issue of keeping ahold of the FMM itself. Visitors were expected to keep the form and offer it upon exiting the country. If evidence of an overstay was found, they would be denied entry to the departures area and sent to pay a fine. Although this is fairly normal for immigration documents, the FMM itself was a tiny piece of paper, barely the size of a passport page, and easily lost. Many accidentally threw it away thinking it was a receipt, or just misplaced it.

But the developments in Cancun mean those are now a thing of the past. Instead of a form, online or otherwise, visitors will now receive a stamp on arrival, streamlining the process and giving clarity to the length of time tourists can stay in the country.

The new process is available for most countries, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, but a few select countries like Brazil, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, and Venezuela, will not be offered 180 days. Instead, they will receive 30 days and still need to fill out the FMM before being admitted to the country.

Digital Nomads will be extremely happy about the news, as extending stays can be a complicated process in Mexico. Cities like Tulum and Mexico City are now seen as major hubs for remote workers, and having a guarantee of six months can make a huge difference in planning for them.

Regardless of the new process, tourists should still ensure they have any supporting documents as to how long they intend to stay, where they are living, and what the purpose of their stay is, as immigration officers still have the ability to question and deny anyone trying to enter the country.

3 Popular Beaches In Mexico Considered Unsafe For Swimming Due To Bacteria

Three beaches in a top resort destination in Mexico have failed cleanliness tests, a story that’s bound to come as a blow to travelers who have plans to visit these areas. Whilst the vast majority of beaches passed the cleanliness guidelines put forth by the World Health Organization (WHO), the three beaches that failed have taken the headlines, and could have an impact on the overall levels of beach tourism in Mexico going forward.

It’s been a troubling few months for the beaches of Mexico, with authorities not only battling hard against the spread of the stinky seaweed sargassum for weeks, but now also having to contend with this latest development. However, there’s no need to go ahead and cancel your travel plans just yet. Here’s everything travelers need to know about the three beaches that failed the WHO’s cleanliness test, plus a look at how the situation regarding the spread of sargassum is at present.

Beaches Fail Cleanliness Tests – Information For Travelers

When it comes to determining the cleanliness of beach water, a range of standard bacterial indicators are used, testing for a range of issues such as E. Coli, fecal matter and enterococci. According to the WHO’s guidelines, beaches must have fewer than 200 enterococcus faecalis – that’s bacteria from a fecal origin – per every 100 milliliters of water. Unfortunately for Mexico, three of its beaches exceeded these limits, making them unsafe for recreational use and potentially jeapordizing the travel plans of many travelers.

The investigation, which was completed by COFEPRIS (the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk), found that the three beaches to exceed the limit were all in the same city, Acapulco – a destination that had recently posted tourist arrivals figures higher than the likes of Cancun and Mexico City. The beaches in question are Manzanillo, Hornos and Suave, and their levels of enterocci were 373, 292 and 241 respectively – figures that put them way above the permitted allowance of 200 needed to vacation there safely.

Last Easter, only one beach was deemed unsafe to visit, yet whilst the situation may appear to be getting worse, that’s not how travelers should see it. Avoiding the three beaches in Acapulco may be a pain for travelers who have already booked to visit that region, however there are plenty of other beaches across the country that are perfectly safe to visit, with an overwhelming majority of Mexican beaches deemed clean enough to enjoy.

A total of 98.96% of the beaches tested by COFEPRIS passed the analysis – meaning travelers really won’t have to go far to find a clean beach. Some destinations proved particularly clean, such as Yutucan and Tamaulipas, whilst the ever-popular destination Quintana Roo – home to Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum – was also found to have impressively low levels of enterococci on its beaches.

The 10 beaches that had the most bacteria are as follows:
1. Manzanillo, Acapulco – 373 enterococci per 100ml water
2. Hornos, Acapulco – 292 enterococci per 100ml water
3. Mild, Acapulco – 241 enterococci per 100ml water
4. Icacos I, Acapulco – 199 enterococci per 100ml water
5. Nexpa 1, Aquila Michoacán – 194 enterococci per 100ml water
6. Caleta, Acapulco – 193 enterococci per 100ml water
7. Yelapa, Jalisco – 181 enterococci per 100ml water
8. Tumbao II, Veracruz – 173 enterococci per 100ml water
9. El Bosque, Tabasco – 172 enterococci per 100ml water
10. Quimixto, Jalisco – 172 enterococci per 100ml water
Unfortunately, fecal matter isn’t the only thing to blight Mexican shores this year. The country has been beseiged by high levels of sargassum – a harmless, yet unsightly and stinky seaweed that has been washing up all over the Caribbean but has landed in Quintana Roo in particularly large volumes. Whilst help in containing the seaweed has come in the shape of an army of hotel workers and the Navy, travelers should brace themselves for its sulphuric stench and aesthetic-damaging properties.

At last, Time Magazine has revealed its yearly list of the World’s Top 50 Greatest Places. While some old classics have unsurprisingly made the list, such as Miami, Istanbul and Bali, a couple of up-and-coming destinations were also featured, including a beach strip in Mexico that attained the coveted title of World’s Hidden Gem. On this post, you will learn why this destination has been awarded the honor, what makes it special, and where exactly you should go based on your own travel preferences.

Although Cancun and the wider Riviera Maya get all the international recognition, this spot has equally stunning beaches. It runs for nearly 200 miles up Mexico’s Pacific coastline, nestled between the historical San Blas port and Banderas Bay, where countless natural landmarks and picturesque seaside towns can be found.

In compiling the list, Time accepted nominations from their international network of ‘correspondents and contributors’, with a particular focus on ‘new and exciting experiences‘. As an off path travel blog, we couldn’t help but gravitate towards 2022’s ‘Hidden Gem’ – or namely, the absolutely stunning Riviera Nayarit in Mexico, that does not get half as many tourists as the ultra-packed Ca n cun or Tulum, though it is definitely growing in popularity. As Time Magazine points out, Nayarit is home to the Pacific’s ‘most unspoiled tropical beauty’.

Mexico has always been a vacation hotspot, and its relaxed attitude towards Covid have now crowned it the unnoficial ‘King of Tourism‘. This year alone, 40 million visitors are expected, superseding major tourism powerhouses, such as Spain and France, whose weaker-than-expected rebound is attributed to stricter health regulations.

Mexico has been open to tourism from the get go, long before vaccination certificates were introduced for travel and all of these European countries started dropping curbs. This bold move is now being acknowledged, with Time adding country’s rising star as one of the top picks on its revered yearly travel list.

What Are Some Of Nayarit’s Strongest Assets?

As the publication details, the ’emerald forests’ of Sierra Madre and the clear blue Pacific Ocean are two of Nayarit’s strongest assets, as well as its extensive list of luxury hotels that are either open for the season, or will launch soon. The best thing is: it doesn’t matter which hotel you’ll be staying, you’re never too far from the ocean.

Time specifically mentions the all-inclusive haven of Susurros del Corazon, an Auberge Resorts, scheduled to open this November. Additionally, the magazine lists the all-inclusive, adults-only Naviva resort as one of the reasons why the Nayarit Riviera is the ultimate vacation destination. In fact, it might as well become the next Cancun, especially now that safety concerns are widespread across the Riviera Maya.

On top of that, the beaches in Nuevo Vallarta, the gateway into Nayarit, have been named the third best in all of Mexico, beating the crowded Playa Delfines in Cancun and Cabo’s Medano Beach. Snorkeling and horseback riding tours are among some of the other best rated activities tourists can undertake in the region.

Where To Visit In Riviera Nayarit?

The Riviera Nayarit is divided into five sections:
- Bahia de Banderas
- Southern Nayarit
- Jaltemba Bay
- Central Nayarit
- Northern Nayarit
Bahia de Banderas is home to Nuevo Vallarta and all of the most popular hotels, including several golf courses and family-friendly beaches. Southern Nayarit, on the other hand, is the furthest point from the main urban centers, and where various secret beaches and small Mexican towns are ready to be discovered.

If you’re looking for more classic Mexican cityscapes, with all the vibrant colors and Instagrammable streets, then you should head instead to Jaltemba Bay, especially the towns of Rincon de Guayabitos and La Peñita. Central Nayarit is for the countryside, animal sanctuaries and outdoor tourism; lastly, Northern Nayarit is where Mexico’s colonial past is displayed in both architecture and customs.

San Blas, in the Northern section of the Riviera, is renowned for its Spanish-era architecture, 18th century ruins, museums and the landmark Las Ilitas cliffs, a must-see for all who visit the state. As you can see, the Riviera Nayarit truly has it all, from culture to beach retreats, and it is really no wonder Time Magazine has named it 2022’s Hidden Gem.
