This is a natural oasis of crystal-clear lagoons and scenic mountain ranges and it’s beautiful regardless of season, but we’ll argue summer is probably the best period to visit, as the seas around Lofoten are not frozen, snowing is restricted to some mountain peaks, and daylight hours are plentiful.

Whether it’s an evening kayak tour off the Svolvær coast, when the sun’s setting over the mountains, or a guided summiting of the landmark Svolværgeita, there are countless activities to keep the adventurer in you entertained over a long weekend, if not a whole week.

Just don’t, you know, jump in the water expecting it to be as warm as the Mediterranean, or you may be in for an unpleasant surprise.

For enthusiastic hikers, Tjeldbergtind is a popular mountain to conquer.

It takes roughly two hours to complete and offers priceless views of the archipelago’s snow-dusted peaks and the several tiny islets scattered along the bay.

A 2 hours up and 2 hours down trail, the eerie-sounding Devil’s Gate (Djevelporten) is where you find Norway’s second-most iconic suspended rock lodged between two cliffs, after the one in Kjeragbolten:

Visitors commonly pose for pictures on top of it, and though accidents have not been recorded, do so at your own risk––of course; the most fascinating part is the sweeping panorama of the rocky formations bounded by azure waters in the distance.

Near Moskenes, the Reinebringen hike is another must-do.

It rises as high as 448 meters above sea level and is best enjoyed between May and September when it’s not super chilly to climb and the sun’s relatively warm and pleasant.

There’s certainly no shortage of nature-made wonders to admire around Lofoten, and hiking options are numerous, but if you’re searching for something manmade and truly unique, the walk from Nusfjord to Nesland should be at the top of your list.

Nusfjord is one of the oldest villages in Lofoten, and if you’re planning on staying overnight to complete the hike at a relaxed pace, consider booking a cottage stay with fjord views at the marvelous Nusfjord Arctic Resort, starting from $282.59 a night this summer.

The pathway to the equally picturesque village of Nesland can be steep and strenuous in certain sections, but the completely undisturbed Arctic nature makes it all worthwhile.

Has Lofoten Got Anything To Offer On The Culture Front?

You’ve likely come all the way to Northern Europe to experience some of that Old World, Scandi charm, and you’ll be thrilled to learn that one of the most beautiful towns in all of Norway, the postcardy Reine, sits on a small bay on Moskenesøya Island.

With its vividly red, wooded houses, Reine must (probably) be the most-photographed spot in the archipelago, but its largest town, often called ‘smallest big city in the world’, is the surprisingly-lively Svolvær:

As pretty as the other villages are, this compact regional ‘capital’ is the best place to stay in Lofoten, with its World War II memorial museum, art galleries, casual seafood restaurants, and well-equipped tourist facilities.

If you’re looking for an authentic restaurant to sample Norwegian food––they do have the best-smoked salmon in the world––make sure you add Børsen Spiseri, in the heart of Svolvær, to your list.

Norway is known to have some of the highest prices in Europe, and accommodation is no exception to the rule, but there are still a fair few good deals to be found around Lofoten, particularly in Svolvær, where there are more listings to choose from.

For example, an overnight stay at the privately-managed Kule gule huset guesthouse will only set you back by $89 per night on wide-availability dates this summer, while a double standard room at the centrally-located, basic-amenities Marina Hotel costs an acceptable $143 to book.

Those would be on the cheaper end, but of course, room rates can go much, much higher once you start looking for some more comfort and maybe a continental breakfast included.

What we’re trying to say is that Lofoten is definitely not the cheapest summer adventure to embark on once you start adding secondary expenses, like car rentals–trust us, you will need one to get around unless you fancy walking long distances or taking ferries–but it is worth a shot.

Essex Steam Train, Connecticut

If you are looking for a combination rail and river expedition, then the Essex Steam Train might be just what you need. Located in the Connectivity River Valley, an often overlooked beautiful part of the country, this trip will offer some serious views.

Free WiFi on airplanes is still not very common, but there are a handful of airlines around the world that offer it — including one major airline that just announced free WiFi for all passengers.

In the United States, only two airlines currently offer free WiFi.

Internationally, there are a number of airlines that offer free WiFi as well.

As with anything “free,” there are a few catches to getting free onboard WiFi. Some airlines offer it on select routes only or for a limited amount of time.

Here are all the major airlines that currently offer free WiFi on most flights:

1. JetBlue

JetBlue was the first U.S. airline to start offering free WiFi to all passengers through their Fly-Fi service in 2013. Since then, it has expanded to cover almost all flights in the United States, as well as many flights to Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as select flights to Europe.

This makes JetBlue one of the best airlines to fly if you’re looking for free WiFi — but coverage may vary depending on the route and type of plane.

2. Delta Air Lines

The most recent airline to announce free WiFi for all is Singapore Airlines.

According to Simple Flying, free WiFi will be available for passengers in all cabins starting July 1. Previously, passengers flying in premium cabins already enjoyed free WiFi, so this roll-out is expected to cover all flights and routes immediately.

Now, passengers seated in economy class will be able to connect to free WiFi too. Similar to Delta, travelers will need to join Singapore Airlines’ free KrisFlyer loyalty program prior to connecting.

4. Qatar Airways

Another airline to offer free WiFi is Qatar Airways — but it does come with a caveat.

In order to access free WiFi on your Qatar Airways flight, you must be a member of the airline’s Privilege Club frequent flyer program (it’s free to join.)

Even then, you’ll only get one hour of complimentary WiFi. After that, you can choose to upgrade to a paid package to continue surfing the web.

5. Norwegian Airlines

European low-cost carrier Norwegian Airlines offers free WiFi on many of their flights. Travelers on short-haul flights within Europe will have access to complimentary WiFi, and as of 2020, it’s available on many long-haul trans-Atlantic flights too.

However, the free WiFi only applies to the “Basic” plan. If you want faster service or the ability to stream video content, you’ll need to pay for a premium WiFi package.

These airlines offer limited free WiFi on select routes or to limited destinations:
- Philippine Airlines: Offers 30 minutes of free WiFi on select international flights
- Qantas: Offers complimentary WiFi on all domestic flights within Australia
- Nok Air: Offers free WiFi on all flights (mainly flies within Thailand)
- Air New Zealand: Offers complimentary WiFi on select flights
Free WiFi on flights seems to be a growing trend, and more airlines may offer this benefit in the future, making it easier than ever to stay connected.

Grenada

Applicants will need to prove that they have earnings of at least $37,000 per year to qualify, as well as pay a $1,500 application fee. The visa lasts for up to 12 months, with the possibility of extending it for an additional 12 months.

Grenada has a lower cost of living compared to many other Caribbean countries and is cheaper than the United States.

Barbados

The Barbados Welcome Stamp is a digital nomad visa that allows remote workers to live and work in Barbados for up to 12 months.

Applicants must demonstrate that they earn $50,000 per year and pay a $1,000 application fee. Although this is steep, it’s lower than many other Caribbean digital nomad visas, and Barbados has a relatively affordable cost of living compared to its neighbors.

Antigua & Barbuda

Similar to Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda offers a digital nomad visa that requires applicants to earn at least $50,000 a year and pay a $1,500 application fee.

This visa is valid for up to 2 years, making it a good option for remote workers who want to relocate for a longer amount of time.

Caribbean Digital Nomad Visas To Avoid

Not every digital nomad visa offered by a Caribbean country is as easy to obtain. These digital nomad visas come with much higher minimum earnings requirements and other drawbacks:
- Cayman Islands: Their Global Citizen Concierge Program requires minimum annual earnings of $100,000 a year, making it inaccessible for many. The Cayman Islands also have a high cost of living.
- Montserrat: Montserrat is a very tiny and isolated island with a population of just 5,900. The Montserrat Remote Work Stamp requires annual earnings of $70,000.
- Dominica: Although Dominica is a very beautiful and relatively affordable island, the minimum earning requirement of $70,000 per year makes this inaccessible to many applicants.

United Airlines Becomes The First U.S. Carrier To Offer Nonstop Flights To Dubai

Proving the ties between North America and the Middle East are stronger than ever now that Covid restrictions have eased, United Airlines has just been granted the honor of being the first U.S. carrier to offer nonstop flights to Dubai, at least in a long while. Pretty soon, Dubai and its many wonders will be a lot more accessible to Americans.

Demand for the United Arab Emirates has soared this year after international tourism resumed: even though the country had remained open, albeit with varying degrees of restrictions, throughout most of the crisis, it wasn’t until recently that bookings went through the roof and an accentuated recovery was noted.

Now, it is without a question one of the most sought-after destinations, both by Americans and globally:

United Returns To Dubai For The First Time In Six Years

Starting next year, United Airlines will have a direct link between its New York hub of Newark (EWR) and Dubai International (DXB), marking the first time a U.S. carrier returns to the Emirate since 2016. At the time, a feud had started between America’s three largest airlines, namely United, Delta and American Airlines, and Persian Gulf’s main carriers.

The daily service is launching officially on March 25, 2023, and is a sign of change for two airlines that had once been hostile to one another over market share for nearly six years. In fact, Emirates Airlines, Dubai’s main server, even warmed to the idea of initiating a codeshare agreement in what could be described as a watershed moment for U.S.-UAE connectivity.

On top of that, customers on both ends will have access to each other’s Frequent Flyer membership, and all the perks that this status confers, whether it’s Business Class upgrades, access to exclusive airport lounges and much more. Luckily, those most enthusiastic about Emirates’ world-class service won’t have to sacrifice their comfort when flying United.

United Brings In Its Boeing 777-200ER

A Boeing 777-200ER has been deployed for the trajectory, and it features a total of 276 seats. Out of those, 50 are Business Class (or Polaris), 24 Premium Plus, or United’s equivalent to ‘premium economy seats’, 46 Economy Plus with extra legroom, and 156 regular Economy, at the lowest-possible fare.

On those, tickets can go as low as $548 one-way.

Emirates has gained a reputation for being a high end airline with true inflight luxury, and has nearly become an essential part of the overall ‘Dubai experience’. United is well aware of that, and while it is no longer Emirates’ fierce competitor, it is rising up to the challenge in providing its loyal Polaris customer a near, if not equal, Emirates-level of quality.

United’s business seats were ‘designed for comfort and convenience’, and have been described as ideal both for those who want to relax ahead of landing at their final destination, or work for a few hours during their flight. Some of the features are a ‘six-way adjustable headrest’ and a seat cushion that ‘cradles’ passengers when reclining.

Also included:
- Multiple storage spaces for personal items;
- A water bottle console;
- An electronic device holder fit for both smartphones and tablets;
- Universal AC power plug;
- An extendable cocktail table;
- DIRECTTV access, etc.
More Details About The Flight

As for the flight itself, duration is 13h25 eastbound and 14h50 westbound. The daily scheduled is as follows: UA164 departs Newark at 22:15, arriving in Dubai 19:40 local time, on the following day. Returning home, flight UA163 leaves Dubai at 2:15 in the morning, arriving back to New York-Newark at 9:05 in the same calendar date EST.

Prior to the launch, United’s route to the Emirate departing from Newark had mandatory layovers in other airports in Europe, such as Paris’ Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam’s Schiphol, which has been facing severe travel delays lately. On the other hand, Emirates has been flying nonstop to JFK for years, a hub that has persistently shunned United’s efforts to expand.

The agreement will allow Emirates to continue operating from JFK, where it even maintains a lounge and has built strong partnerships, while United serves Newark instead. Moving forward, we expect to see this relationship deepen further, and new routes to be announced from the U.S. to the Middle East now that the air bridge has been amended.

Delta May Offer You $10,000 Dollars To Get Off An Overbooked Flight

One of the airlines most heavily affected by the 2022 aviation crisis, Delta is reportedly resorting to more radical measures to ensure operations run as smoothly as possible, going as far as offering passengers on an overbooked flight 10,000 dollars to peacefully leave the aircraft. You know what they say…

Every cloud has a silver lining.

These have been interesting times for air travel, to say the least. Even though Covid is being treated more and more like a moderate disease, and the world has finally reopened following endless months of draconian travel rules, a wave of flight disruptions has marred the first restriction-free summer of travel.

Besides staffing shortages, overbooking on some airlines’ part is also helping make this a turbulent season:

Delta Is Offering Some Pretty Hefty Compensation For Passengers Booked On Oversold Flights

Passengers who were scheduled to fly from Grand Rapids (GRR) to Minnesota (MSP) on a Delta Airlines flight last week were reportedly offered 10,000 U.S. dollars to leave their overbooked flight. According to Jason Aten, who writes for Inc. Magazine, Delta crew made the announcement minutes before the aircraft was due to leave the gate.

In Mr. Aten’s account of events, the airline offered the beefy, immediate compensation to eight volunteers, although Delta representatives have not confirmed this information as of yet. Despite lack of an official statement, other passengers who were on the same flight took to Twitter to back Aten’s reports.

As stated by Todd McCrumb, a Twitter user, it is a ‘true story’, though he could not take up the offer as he was flying with his wife, who has ‘very limited eyesight’ and needs him nearby when traveling. In an interview with KTVB 7, Mr. McCrumb further asserted that Delta was willing to give out 80,000 dollars to avoid some major disruption.

While he did not opt for the money prize, citing his wife’s limitations, he saw ‘at least four others’ accept the offer. The June 27 flight, initially scheduled to depart Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids at 6:45 AM, ended up taking off 20 minutes later until enough volunteers came forth. Mr. Aten himself didn’t leave the aircraft.

As he revealed to Fortune, not a single person in his group of eight, who were on a connecting flight with Alaska as a final destination, raised their hands as they ‘didn’t immediately know how many volunteers were needed’. However, had they known it was eight, the exact number of seats booked for the group, they would have gotten off.

It then became too late for Mr. Aten to volunteer when ‘four or five people had already left’. As for the compensation itself, flight attendants seemingly stated passengers accepting the deal would receive the money instantly, especially if they had Apple Pay. We were not able to verify this part of Mr. Aten’s statement.

What’s Behind The Recent Travel Chaos?

Nearly every major American airline has reported severe staffing shortages affecting their ability to fulfill their summer schedule. American Airlines has paused sales on Amsterdam routes at Amsterdam’s airport own request, while United has been forced to suspend seven of its most important flight routes in order to protect others.

These issues have been largely attributed to staffing constraints, resulting from the Covid-induced mass layoffs of the last two years. Throughout 2020 and 2021, as air travel nearly came to a halt, both airport authorities and airlines significantly scaled back operations, meaning some of its highly qualified personnel had to be let go.

Delta is no exceptions and their delays have been well documented, with CEO Ed Bastian apologizing to customers via a lengthy LinkedIn post. Bastian reaffirms that Delta’s team of 75,000+ professionals around the globe ‘remain focused on providing the very best care‘ for customers and their loved ones.

Besides the limited capacity, airlines are visibly struggling to cope with their new reality, and they have only reluctantly adjusted their schedules to accommodate passengers. Expressly, overbooked flights are becoming increasingly common, especially now that carriers are keen on maximizing profit amid the travel chaos.

Was This A One-Off Or Is It A New Delta Policy?

We do not know, at this point, whether this has been a one-off, or Delta is willing to continue taking drastic measures to ensure flights leave on time – and reliable customers getting bumped from overbooked aircraft don’t turn into some of their active detractors. But don’t worry: we will keep an eye out for similar stories.

Legally, airlines can oversell tickets, but this does not mean kicking passengers off a plane is an ideal move when they are already under fire over the recent spate of delays. Fortunately for Delta customers, the compensation they may be offered when being escorted out of an overbooked flight could now far outweigh these inconveniences.

This Major U.S. Airline Plans To Offer Free Wifi

One of America’s largest airline carriers is offering FREE WiFi to all passengers on board some of its flights – up until 10 June.

Having begun the trial just a few days ago (4 May), Southwest Airlines – which is the world’s largest low-cost carrier – is currently offering free WiFi on board a number of its Boeing 737 airplanes.

The trial is part of a test for new hardware – which has recently been installed on 40 of the airline’s fleet – to see if it can cope with large numbers of users at one time, as well as provide faster internet to all passengers that connect to it.

Which Flights Are Offering Free WiFi?

As just mentioned, the trial of free WiFi is currently taking place on board 40 of Southwest’s Boeing 737 planes – with these aircrafts operating flights throughout the western part of the United States.

Will You Be Able To Stream Netflix Using The FREE WiFi?

Passengers that are on board any of Southwest’s flights that are part of the Free WiFi trial will be able to “stream, browse, and engage on the internet,” according to Southwest’s Vice President of Customer Experience and Customer Relations, Tony Roach.

So, it does look like passengers will be able to stream their latest Netflix or HBO series whilst cruising at 30,000 feet in the air.

The airline’s current offering of WiFi – which is available on board Southwest’s WiFi-enabled aircrafts at a cost of $8 – does not allow passengers to stream movies and content from websites such as Netflix, HBO Max, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams.

This is due to the airline’s WiFi blocking access to high-bandwidth websites, applications and video conferencing services.

How Long Will The Trial Last For?

The trial is set to last for six weeks, with all passengers on board the 40 flights – that has the new WiFi hardware installed – being able to connect to the WiFi at no cost.

The trial began on 4 May and will continue up until 10 June.

Is Free WiFi Available On All Southwest Flights?

At this moment in time, no.

However, it could well be in the near future – especially if the newly installed hardware on some of Southwest’s airplanes can cope with large numbers of users at one time.

The airline does currently offer WiFi to all passengers on board its flights at a cost of $8 per passenger to use it – with the service being free to connect to for Southwest’s A-List Preferred Members.

Will Southwest Be Offering FREE WiFi On Board All Of Its Flights In The Future?

At this moment in time, this is unknown.

However, if the trial is a success then it could be that in the future all Southwest passengers will be able to connect to FREE WiFi – which would allow them to stream their favorite movie or TV series whilst flying high in the sky.

Speaking about the airline’s trial of their upgraded WiFi, Southwest’s Vice President of Customer Experience and Customer Relations, Tony Roach, explained the company’s vision:

“Our goal is to evaluate how the new hardware improves performance while delivering a reliable internet experience used by a large volume of Customers.”

Do Any Other Of The Major Airlines In The U.S. Offer Free WiFi?

Right now, only one of America’s major airlines – JetBlue – offers free WiFi to all passengers on board any of its flights.

However, just a month ago we reported that five airlines in the U.S. had lowered the cost of their onboard WiFi services.

And, just last week it was revealed that Hawaiian Airlines will become the first major airline to provide Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service to passengers on board its flights from next year.
