    Mexican tourism has exploded in popularity. The country is the number 1 destination for U.S. travelers and is smashing visitor number records over and over.

    To manage these huge visitor numbers, the Mexican government is investing heavily in its travel infrastructure.

    A new airport has opened in Tulum, and the Maya Train is making exploring the Yucatan Peninsula easier than ever.

    And now another new international airport is set to open in the country.

    Here’s what you need to know:

    Explore The Beautiful State Of Nayarit

    Exploring the beautiful Mexican State of Nayarit is set to be easier than ever. That’s because a new international airport will open here.

    Tepic Airport is located in the north-central part of the state. This airport is forecasted to welcome at least 4 million passengers a year, and the project will include a new terminal building, jet bridges, a new air traffic control tower, and more than 33,000 square feet of shops and restaurants.

    Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit Mexico

    While the airport itself has already existed for many years, its massive expansion will make a new international airport within Mexico.

    It is in a prime position for adventurous tourists. You’ll find it 3 hours west of Guadalajara and 3 hours north of Puerto Vallarta.

    Most visitors to the Riviera Nayarit currently fly into the airport in Puerto Vallarta, which is why the southern portion of the state tends to welcome significantly more visitors than the north.

    This airport will open up travel to 3 Mexican destinations well worth exploring: San Blas, Costa Canuva, and Rincon de Guayabitos.

    Along with the revamped airport, a new highway will also be built in the region.

    This is expected to be completed this year and will shorten the drive time between Tepic and the Riviera Nayarit considerably. This journey currently takes 3 hours, but once the new highway is completed, it will take just 1 hour and 15 minutes.

    San Blas

    San Blas is a beautiful and pristine destination popular with eco-tourists and animal lovers. These travelers are attracted here because the landscapes and surroundings are so picturesque.

    The resort area boasts a 4-mile expanse of fine sand beach, and the area has a rich and fascinating history.

    The town was founded in 1530, and you can tour the Contaduria stronghold as well as the Nuestra Senora de Rosario Temple, which are both fine examples of the architecture of the city.

    A highlight of any visit here is a guided boat tour through the La Tovara Nature Reserve. San Blas is also popular with sailing enthusiasts and water sports fans, particularly surfers, as there are few hurricanes on this coastline.

    Costa Canuva

    Costa Canuva is a relatively understated resort area, and it is often referred to as the best-kept secret of the Riviera Nayarit.

    It is 59km from the Puerto Vallarta airport and 3.5 hours from the Guadalajara airport, but the new Tepic airport will open it up further.

    The beaches are breathtakingly beautiful, and the resort area features miles of hiking and biking trails.

    There are 5 luxury hotels in Costa Canuva as well as more than 2,500 residential properties and a PGA-standard golf course so luxury lovers will be spoilt for choice here.

    This is a great spot if you’re looking for a break that is both relaxing and culturally enriching. Costa Canuva is considered one of Riviera Nayarit’s best spots in the winter months.

    Rincon De Guayabitos

    Rincon de Guayabitos is a small touristy town packed full of amenities. The people here are friendly and welcoming and the town is incredibly safe which makes it an appealing spot for U.S. tourists.

    Aerial View Of A White Sand Beach In Rincon de Guayabitos, Nayarit Riviera, Mexico

    Here, you’ll find huge expanses of white sand beaches, a beautiful shaded hot spring, and every Monday morning during the winter months, there is a small and fun market in the main town square. The town is known for its gentle waves, reasonable prices, and convenient location.

    Rincon de Guayabitos boasts everything the discerning tourist could need.

    This Mayan Ruin South Of Cancun Will Open To The Public For The First Time Ever

    [ad_1]

    Mayan ruins are a big part of the reason why Mexico is so popular as a tourist destination, particularly among History enthusiasts.

    Belonging to the wider Mayan World, it is home to over 200 archaeological zones, where some of the most impressive structures of the ancient civilization, including the world-famous step pyramids and the ball courts, can still be seen.

    Step Pyramid In Ichkabal, Mexican Caribbean, Yucatan Peninsula Of Mexico

    While open-air museums like Chichen Itza and the Tulum ruins are well-known to the wider public, one of Mexico’s priceless Mayan treasures had remained sealed off for decades as excavations and conservation efforts were underway, though that is changing soon.

    A Mayan ruin with restricted access is opening for visitors for the first time, and if you’re planning a trip to Cancun for 2024, you could be among the first to explore it:

    The Legendary Ichkabal Is Opening To The Public For The First Time In History

    Step Pyramid In Ichkabal, Mexican Caribbean, Yucatan Peninsula Of Mexico

    After a decade since it was first announced as Mexico’s next protected archaeological site, the unexplored Mayan city of Ichkabal will host its first foreign visitors.

    As revealed by Diego Prieto, Director General of the country’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), renovation works in the ruins will be finished soon, allowing it to welcome tourists as early as summer 2024.

    In his own words, ‘the Federation’s instruction is that the opening of the archaeological zone of Ichkabal be in August 2024, so they with the ejidatarios to reach an agreement‘.

    Bacalar, Lake Bacalar, Quintana Roo, Mexico

    The ruins are only a two-and-a-half hour drive South of Cancun, towards the trendy resort town of Bacalar, and its opening coincides with the launch of the Mayan Train later this year.

    From December 2023, travelers based in Cancun will be able to hop on an affordable scenic train to Bacalar, the major town nearest to the ruins in question, and the gateway to the seven-colored Lake Bacalar, a popular alternative to the Tulum coast this summer.

    From the planned Maya Train station in Bacalar, the drive to Ichkabal will take less than 25 minutes.

    Why Is Ichkabal Important?

    Aerial View Of Ichkabal Pyramid In The Yucatan Peninsula Of Mexico

    Ichkabal was once one of the most important urban centers in pre-Columbian America.

    Settled by the Mayans as early as 400 B.C., it stood among an elite group of cities on the Mayan trade route, due to its privileged location, in close proximity to the Central American isthmus, offering easy links to all of the major Mayan hubs beyond the Yucatan Peninsula.

    Although it was a secondary power and not as relevant a cultural center as the likes of Chichen Itza – currently one of Mexico’s best preserved ancient cities – or Tikal, in Northern Guatemala, Ichkabal was able to flourish as a key trading hub in the pre-classic era.

    Chichen Itza, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

    Much like Chichen Itza, its more famous sister city-state, it consisted of several temples and sacrificial sites built as a means to bring the Mayans closer to their deities, wide avenues flanked by stone houses and public buildings, and ball courts and other entertainment areas.

    It was inhabited until the early 16th century, when the natives were pushed out or exterminated following the Spanish Conquest, and the city fell into abandonment.

    As the ‘Hispanicization’ of Mexico took place, and the native Mexicans eventually assimilated into Hispanic culture, Ichkabal’s existence was all but forgotten as the construction of post-colonial settlements advanced, and nature slowly reclaimed it.

    mayan ruins

    It wasn’t until the 20th century that a renewed interest in Ichkabal was noted, particularly following the rise of tourism in the Mexican Caribbean, leading historians and archaeologists to intensify their efforts in restoring the lost city to its former glory.

    What Are The Rules For Visiting Ichkabal?

    At this point, we do not yet know how much it will cost to visit the ruins or whether there are additional rules visitors must familiarize themselves with not to be on the wrong side of the law.

    mayan ruins

    Recently, a number of tourists have been penalized, or issued fines, for climbing Mayan structures in Chichen Itza and other protected ancient reserves in Mexico.

    Some of the pyramids in the Aztec city of Teotihuacan, close to Mexico City, are now also off-limits to climbers.

    Regarding Ichkabal’s state of preservation and whether its temples are accessible and safe to enter, we will only know more once the site is formally open and the visitation rules are available for consultation.

    While Ichkabal is not open, you can still explore countless other Mayan ruins accessible to visitors within driving distance of Cancun. Learn more about them here.

  • South America’s First Digital Nomad Village Will Open In Brazil

    South America’s First Digital Nomad Village Will Open In Brazil

    [ad_1]

    Share The Article

    Last Updated

    South America’s first-ever digital nomad village is set to open in Brazil, where remote workers will be able to base themselves as they explore one of the continent’s most exciting and culturally diverse countries. However, if you’re thinking tourist cliches like Rio or Sao Paulo have been selected as host cities, you are in for a big surprise.

    Pipa In Northeastern Brazil, South America

    Having spent two and a half years mostly sealed off from the rest of the world, Brazil is now keen on boosting tourism and being ahead of the curve when it comes to the latest travel trends. One of them is digital nomadism, a lifestyle that’s exploding in popularity in the post-Covid world, and on which the nation is banking on to boost its economy.

    Having announced its own Digital Nomad Visa recently, it seems South America’s largest nation is preparing to become a major nomad hotspot:

    First, Why Brazil

    Aerial View Of Tropical Beach In Northeastern Brazil, South America

    The Nomad Village Brazil is a project run by the Portugal-based startup Nomad X, who identified the country, with which the European nation has close historical ties to, as the ideal location for building a digital worker hub. Of course, the kinship between Portugal and Brazil is not the only reason for this favoritism:

    Europe may have come out ahead of other markets by opening up to nomadism a lot sooner, with Croatia being one of the first in the world to launch a specific visa for this category, but unlike Brazil, where the sun shines all year round, the Old Continent normally gets chilly and grey in the long winter months. Yes, even in the Mediterranean.

    Even in the low season, coastal states in Brazil, especially in the North, still record temperatures well above 30 degrees, making it an ideal place for long-term travelers looking for somewhere warmer to linger a while longer. Interestingly, NomadX didn’t pick ‘The Wonderful City’, namely Rio, to welcome guests.

    Instead, they are setting up the village in the unheard-of Pipa, a small coastal town in Northeastern Brazil where some of the country’s most breathtakingly beautiful beaches are located. Branding it an ‘escape’ from the harsh Northern Hemisphere winter, the company has picked Pipa’s Morada dos Ventos guest house to welcome participants.

    A Cozy, Picturesque Retreat Nestled In Northeastern Brazil

    The picturesque property is located in a natural setting only 800 meters from the gorgeous Amor Beach, and a 13-minute walk from the landmark Pipa Beach, the area’s main attraction. It features 3 pools, tropical gardens adorned with sky-high coconut trees, and bungalow-style apartments with varying levels of comfort. In sum, just the perfect nomad haven.

    The guest house will serve this purpose from November 1, 2022 to April 23, 2023, comprising the Brazilian summer and some of the hottest months in the calendar year. Pre-registration is also open, and nomads can already secure their slots through the Nomad Village Brazil official website, where more information can be accessed.

    Other perks include:

    • A Brazilian-style breakfast every morning
    • Free Wi-Fi
    • A bar
    • A poolside restaurant serving food throughout the day and in the evening
    • Airport shuttles available

    How Can Nomads Get To Pipa?

    Young Female Traveler Smiling As She Checks Her Phone At An Airport

    The nearest airport to the place is Sao Gonçalo do Amarante International, serving the city of Natal, some 62 miles away. Currently, the only international flights arriving in Natal originate from Lisbon, Portugal, meaning there are no direct links from North America. Still, Americans can easily reach it via short layovers.

    Brazil’s main entry points are in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, both only 3h10 or 3h20 away from Natal by plane. Yes, it’s a bit trickier to get to, but once you’re there, trust us, you won’t ever want to leave. As you might have realized, this is a pretty unusual location to set up a nomad village, far from Brazil’s busy urban centers and traditional tourist route.

    Young Male Watching The Twin Brothers Rock Formation In Fernando De Noronha, Pernambuco, Brazil

    On the other hand, the Brazilian Northeast is also where the country’s most scenic coastline is found, lined with up-and-coming tourist spots like Jericoacoara and Canoa Quebrada. Pipa itself is famous for its energetic nightlife and Bohemian vibe, known to attract thousands of tourists, both from neighboring municipalities and abroad, every year.

    In fact, its relative remoteness is precisely what makes it an enticing destination: without being in a big, sprawling city where making meaningful connections can be more challenging, guests will be able to interact, and exchange experiences, much more easily, besides being surrounded by the stunning Brazilian nature in a quieter setting.

    What Are The Conditions For Applying To Live In Brazil As A Digital Nomad?

    Anyone who satisfies all of the requirements below can apply to live in Brazil for up to two years as a digital nomad:

    • Have earnings of more than $1,500 per month, either as entrepreneurs or employees of a foreign company
    • A valid passport for the entirety of their time in Brazil
    • Valid health insurance covering the intended stay

    *It is worth noting citizens of Mercosur and Mercosur-associated countries, such as Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Colombia and others, already enjoy freedom of movement within Brazil and do not need to apply for visas working in the country

    Aerial View Of Christ The Redeemer Statue In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

    Although the Digital Nomad Village has an end date, as of now, it may well be extended into the future should it prove successful. Naturally, visitors wishing to stay longer can make their own private reservations for dates beyond April 2023, or move base elsewhere in the country (these 4 off path Brazilian cities could be a good starting point).

Serving a delectable fusion of Japanese and South American cuisine, trips to Nobu’s restaurant are bound to be a highlight of many travelers’ stays at the hotel.

Riviera Maya boasts a wealth of natural settings for travelers to enjoy, including miles of soft, white sand beaches, well-preserved Mayan ruins to explore in the region, and one of the world’s largest barrier reefs for snorkelers and adventure-seekers to admire below the waves.

    The new hotel will be a partnership between Nobu and RCD Hotels, their second in Mexico following a project in Los Cabos. Speaking about the new development, Trevor Horwell, CEO of Nobu Hospitality, said:

    “We are extremely proud to have achieved our 30th hotel milestone in just nine years and honored to share the vision of our hotel owning partners and thankful for the passion of our Nobu colleagues around the world.”

    • a 7,500-seater auditorium
    • a hot air balloon attraction

    There are also plans for the theme park to feature an area of 80,000 square meters of water – which visitors will be able to enjoy – however, at this present time it has not been confirmed whether this will be an actual water park or another water-based attraction.

    As well as the above mentioned features, visitors to Malltertainment will also be able to choose from a number of restaurants options on site, as well as shops and other amenities which are sure to meet the needs of all of those who enter its doors.

    Palace Resorts is the company group behind the Malltertainment project, with their new theme park complex set to open right next to one of their biggest – and one of Cancun’s most-popular all-inclusive hotel resorts – the Moon Palace Cancun.

    The company behind the construction of the Malltertainment theme park is Gicsa – a Mexico-based real estate development company.

    And, if the news that visitors to the Moon Palace Cancun will soon be able to enjoy a day-trip to the new nearby theme park complex, Malltertainment, wasn’t enough – there is still a huge amount of entertainment that the Moon Palace Cancun, itself, offers visitors.

    That is because the all-inclusive hotel resort offers thousands of rooms, several swimming pools, as many as 16 on-site restaurants to choose from – as well as a luxury spa, fitness center, tennis and basketball courts, a selection of bars and clubs to party the night away in, a children’s playroom, and much much more.

    So, the news that there is soon to be a new mega theme park opening in the area is no doubt going to attract even more visitors – with millions of tourists already having enjoyed all that is on offer in this hugely popular part of the city of Cancun.

    5 Off The Beaten Path Destinations In Africa Open For Tourism

    Still relatively unexplored by Westerners, Africa is perhaps the most underrated continent in the world. From its Pacific to Indian Coasts, the cradle of humanity is brimming with culture and ready to be re-discovered following two years Covid.

    Unlike several well-known destinations in Asia or the Caribbean, which still impose stricter travel rules, others in Africa, which are just as paradisiac, are welcoming U.S. travelers with open arms and very simple entry requirements.

    Here you will find 5 off the beaten path destinations in the African continent which are currently open for American, Canadian, and British visitors, whether testing or vaccination is needed for entry, and most importantly: what these unheard-of countries have to offer.

    Cape Verde

    Santa Maria Beach In Sal, Cape Verde

    Looking for spotless beaches with the clearest of waters, luxury resorts that are much more affordable than similar beach retreats in the Maldives or Cancun, and a warm tropical climate all year-round? Cape Verde might be that dream destination you never knew you needed.

    An archipelago off the Western coast of Africa, this country is steeped in History, owing its dual European-African identity to its strong links to Portugal, and featuring several island getaways vacationers can pick from, including the tourist hotspots of Sal and Boa Vista.

    Covid Entry Requirements For Cape Verde

    When it comes to Covid entry requirements, Cape Verde is noticeably one of the easiest countries to visit in the African continent right now. In order to enter, Americans need to fill out a Travel Form in advance and present only one of the following documents:

    • A vaccination certificate certifying full immunization with all required doses of an approved vaccination scheme;
    • A recovery letter dated no earlier than 90 days prior to departure;
    • A negative PCR test result issued within 72 hours of flying;
    • A negative Rapid Antigen test result obtained 48 hours before flying.

    Once in Cape Verde, other than regular temperature checks at the airport, visitors are not required to undergo further testing or observe quarantine, being able to enjoy their time in the sun worries-free. On the other hand, presenting Covid documents may be necessary for inter-island travel.

    Mozambique

    African Huts In The Hills Of Mozambique

    Like Cape Verde, Mozambique is a former Portuguese colony and a nation boasting incredible wildlife, beaches, and marine parks. Straddling the Indian Ocean coast, this hidden gem is just as intriguing as its neighbor South Africa, but without the usual crowds of tourists.

    Here you can visit the Quirimbas Archipelago, comprising 250km of coral islands, explore the impressive ruins of Ibo, an island owing much of its History to the Portuguese colonial period, or then just relax at quieter beaches such as Tofo.

    Covid Entry Requirements For Mozambique

    While Mozambique does not require proof of vaccination to enter, it also does not differentiate between existing categories of travelers, expecting all incoming passengers to present proof of a negative PCR test, issued up to 72 hours prior to travel.

    U.S. citizens also require a visa to visit Mozambique, which is issued upon arrival. Travelers are advised to contact Mozambican authorities in order to obtain more information on visa fees, which may vary depending on the duration of their stay. In summary, they must carry:

    • A negative PCR test result issued up to 72 hours prior to traveling;
    • A return ticket;
    • An accommodation booking.

    Despite the availability of visas on arrival, the U.S. Embassy in Mozambique advises Americans to obtain their visas in advance from the Mozambican Embassy in Washington, noting that some ‘U.S. citizens have been denied entry for not having obtained the proper type of visa in advance’.

    Seychelles

    Baie Beau Vallon Beach On Mahe Island In Seychelles

    Seychelles is an archipelago country in the Indian ocean, off the Eastern coast of Africa, and one of the most developed nations in the whole continent. Its small capital, Victoria, offers a more relaxed city break, while the Morne Seychellois National Park allows visitors to get back in touch with nature.

    Boat trips are also a common activity across the Seychellois islands, which are famous for water activities and some of the most beautiful secret beaches in Africa. When visiting, travelers are likely to land in Mahé, the main island, and the country’s most important hub.

    Covid Entry Requirements For Seychelles

    As of March 15, 2022, fully vaccinated visitors no longer need to take Covid tests before traveling to Seychelles. If more than six months have passed since completion of a primary vaccination scheme, they must have received a booster in order to continue being eligible to bypass testing.`

    Other travelers are also welcome, though they may have to undergo testing prior to flying, especially those who are unvaccinated and have not had Covid in the year preceding travel. Generally, travelers must select one of the Covid proofs of entry below:

    • A vaccination certificate dated less than 6 months;
    • A booster dose;
    • A recovery certificate dated less than a year prior to travel;
    • A negative PCR test within 72 hours of travel;
    • A negative Rapid Antigen test in under 24 hours.

    Tanzania

    Safari 4x4 Car Driving Through The African Saharan Landscape, Tanzania

    Tanzania is yet another surprising destination in Southeastern Africa, cornered between snowy peaks to the North, the nations of Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi to the West, Mozambique to the South, and the Indian Ocean to the East.

    It is home to the impressive Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in all of Africa, and the autonomous island of Zanzibar, which features the UNESCO-listed Stone City. Classical African safaris and wildlife observation are also popular activities among visitors.

    Arab Fort In Stone City, Zanzibar, Tanzania

    Covid Entry Requirements For Tanzania

    Tanzania is open for tourism.

    Those who have been fully vaccinated against Covid are exempt from all kinds of testing before and after arrival to Tanzania, but they must be able to present a valid certificate with a readable QR code upon landing. This means U.S. citizens who only hold a physical CDC card may face further challenges.

    Alternatively, those who do not hold a valid vaccination certificate can enter by presenting either a negative RT-PCR or NAAT test result. The test must be performed within 72 hours of departure and presented at the border upon landing. Thus, Americans are advised to hold either a:

    • Digital vaccination certificate with a QR code; or a
    • Negative PCR or NAAT test result performed 72 hours prior to flying.

    São Tomé and Principe

    Sunset In Santo Antonio, Capital Of Sao Tome And Principe, Africa

    An island-country located in the Gulf of Guinea, São Tomé and Principe has been made famous for its striking nature, which includes unique rock formations and an abundance of rainforests. As another former colony of Portugal, its cities also feature traditional Portuguese architecture.

    Beach lovers will also inevitably fall in love with the country, which boasts miles of pristine coastline. Some of its most famous attractions are the Rolas Island, a small island with turquoise water beaches, the Cão Grande peak, which is a major national landmark, and the Blue Lagoon.

    Cao Grande Peak In Sao Tome And Principe, Africa

    Covid Entry Requirements For São Tomé and Principe

    São Tomé and Principe has some of the easiest Covid entry requirements on this list. All are welcome irrespective of vaccination status, though all travelers must undergo testing prior to departure. Once through the border, Americans are free to explore the islands unrestricted.

    In sum, they must present a single document:

    • A negative PCR test result obtained within 72 hours of traveling.
    Masai Villager In Kenya, Africa

    Whether it’s unexpected beach breaks, once-in-a-lifetime experiences in the Saharan drylands, or city-hopping across different nations, there is surely no shortage of landmarks to be visited in Africa.

    As more countries in this continent reopen for tourism, Americans are advised to follow official CDC guidance ahead of making travel plans, and ensure they are covered for any Covid-related eventualities while abroad.
