Dining out in Ubud, one of the most popular retreat zones on the island, tourists can expect to pay as little as $26.15 for a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant, while inexpensive restaurants will hand you a bill of a negligible $2.45 or less.

Additionally, a half liter of domestic beer costs on average $2.29, and if you’re cooking from your AirBnB or long-stay accommodation, you can certainly get by just fine spending between $20 and $30 on groceries every week.

Bali Has A Digital Nomad Visa

Regarding the latter part, the final reason why Bali has become so popular among digital nomads is its relaxed visa policies directly benefit the category.

Indonesia was one of the first in Southeast Asia to launch a Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), enabling remote workers to apply for a residence permit and set up a home base in the paradisaical island since September 2022.

Although it is not a classic DNV, like Colombia’s or Greece’s, being called a ‘socio-cultural’ B211a visa instead, it does allow eligible applicants to enter Indonesia for a ‘workcation’, provided they fulfill all of the existing criteria.

This involves holding a valid passport for at least a year, for single-entry visa applications on a duration of 180 days, or a travel document with at least six months of validity left, for a 60-day visa.

Whichever category you fit into, you must provide funds of at least $2000 (two thousand U.S. dollars), or the equivalent of that sum, to support yourself while in Indonesia, as well as a return or outward ticket to be redeemed at the intended date of exit.

Not all Mediterranean countries are well known to the American public, however, who will often falter in naming countries that are not Spain, Italy, or Greece, when in fact, one of the most beautiful islands in the basin does not belong to any of these major states – and believe it or not:

It is simply the perfect fall destination, being best enjoyed in the off-season. Here are 5 reasons why Cyprus should be your next international trip:

The Gateway To Olympus

Before our European readers rush to the comment section to denounce our classification of Cyprus as a ‘lesser-known’ country, you must know it is very much so an off-path destination for a majority of Americans, who rank nowhere in Cyprus’ top-ten most frequent visitors.

To our American readers who might never have heard of Cyprus before, it is an Eastern Mediterranean island just south of Turkiye (formerly spelled Turkey) with Hellenic origins. This means Cyprus is, in essence, a Greek-speaking island, except it is not part of Greece.

Cyprus is its own country, and although the Greek language is most widely spoken, and ethnic Greek Cypriots form a majority, Turkish is also an official language at the national level due to the island’s strong cultural ties to its closest neighbor.

A bit of History, if we may: Cyprus has been an island divided since the 1970s, when Turkish forces occupied the Northern third of the island, and the self-declared, breakaway state of TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) was declared to very limited international recognition.

A Middle Eastern Island That Is Part Of Europe?

If you look at a mapa mundis, you will see Cyprus is firmly planted in the Middle East, which would make it in theory an Asian country, as it is closer to Turkiye (70 km), Syria (110 km), Lebanon (200 km), and Israel (300 km), and Syria than it is to Greece, the closest European neighbor (800 km).

Still, Cyprus is geopolitically and culturally a European nation, being a member of the European Union (EU), and having the Euro as its official currency.

Now that we have got the technicalities out of the way and given you the shortest possible introduction to Cyprus, here’s why it is perfect for an autumn getaway:

Prices Will Drop This Fall

As it is remote, being the Southeastern-most country in the EU, Cyprus is very remote and trickier to get to, especially if you’re traveling from America. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

It may not host nonstop Transatlantic flights, but it is served by several low-cost airlines operating in Europe and the wider Mediterranean region, with airfares as cheap as $39 departing from certain British hubs.

As traveling to Cyprus will inevitably require a layover in a third European country, Americans get to pick which departure point is the cheapest out of a vast continent with plenty of budget-friendly offers – and lucky for them, prices are set to drop significantly this fall.

Great Connectivity

Fall is the off-season in Europe when air passenger numbers plummet as a result of the start of the school year and end of the summer holidays, and though connectivity to Cyprus is affected – some Cyprus-bound routes are seasonal – connectivity to mainland Europe is certainly not severed.

Traveling from Paris (Beauvais) to Larnaca (LCA), the busiest airport in Cyprus in late September, Americans can find flights as cheap as $38 one-way flying WizzAir, as seen on Skyscanner, while London Luton departures start at just $27.

Cyprus is served by budget airlines from all over Europe, and you’ll certainly be spoiled for choice as long as you get to Europe first.

Maybe couple a beach break in Cyprus with these other trendy European countries, using the mainland as a starting point.

It Is Unbelievably Hot

One of the reasons why Cyprus is still so well-frequented in the off-season is its amazing weather.

As you might have guessed glancing at the map, it is essentially a Middle Eastern destination more than it is Southern European proper, which means the shoulder seasons are pretty mild.

While you do get snow in the mountainous inland of Cyprus over winter, the coast remains relatively warm, enjoying highs of 68°F even in February. If winters are that mild, you can imagine how warm autumns are.

According to TUI, a Britain-based travel agency, ‘days are usually hot with balmy evenings’, and tourists are encouraged to ‘pack light and cool clothing’ long after summer is through. The average daily maximum is 89°F in September, with a minimum of 71°F.

In October, the temperature remains high at 82°F, on average, dropping to a pleasant 73°F in November. In sum, Cyprus stays warm the entire off-season, and as it is a Mediterranean island, the seas also remain much warmer than other European swimming sites.

It Is A Year-Round Destination

This fall, Cyprus is expected to register a high occupancy, with hotels close to being sold out at least two months after the peak of summer.

Looking at its gorgeous weather, this is hardly a surprise, but it’s maybe the first time Cyprus has had such a long and successful tourist season.

In a way, it seems to have consolidated its spot as one of the top shoulder season destinations not only in Europe or the wider Eurasia but the whole world.

It seems the Tourism Ministry’s efforts for Cyprus to become an all-year-round tourist destination have paid off, with recent data pointing that ‘tourist units will have high occupancies until mid-October’.

‘Our tourism partners report that in some areas, such as Paphos, there will be an increase in tourists from November 2023 – February 2024, compared to previous years‘, he added, referring to one of the trendiest resort cities on the island.

Paphos is best known as the birthplace of Aphrodite and an ancient port home to UNESCO-listed monuments, including the landmark Tombs of the Kings, a vast necropolis with well-preserved Doric columns and frescoes.

While there has not been a ‘uniformity’ across Cyprus, with other resort regions like Famagusta reporting a drop in bookings as early as June, the overall picture looks good.

Cyprus Is Still Not As Touristy As Other Mediterranean Countries

Finally, Cyprus is less busy than Greece or Italy. That’s not to stay it is a hidden gem awaiting discovery.

It may not be the first destination Americans think of when planning an off-season beach vacation, either due to a lack of knowledge on Southeastern Europe, or the absence of nonstop flights which makes getting to Cyprus harder, but it is a hugely popular sunny getaway for Europeans.

You should expect well-frequented beaches and lively cities brimming with life and tourists, but it is still nowhere near the crazy levels of tourism seen in Italian hotspots such as Rome, Florence, and Venice, or neighboring Greece’s Santorini and Mykonos.

Visitor numbers will probably not dwindle significantly in the fall, but Cyprus will still be considerably less hectic than its European counterparts, as its all-time high for yearly figures peaked at only 4.12 million in 2019.

Last year, only 1.94 million tourists vacationed in Cyprus, a majority having arrived between the summer months.

While many remote workers surely have dreams of globetrotting with their laptop in tow, maybe their work arrangement just doesn’t quite match up.

The remote work takeover has its set of controversies ranging from frustrated bosses to empty commercial real estate spaces.

Digital nomads tend to say, “that sounds like a personal problem!”, as they hop from place to place and getting paid to do so.

A new study by MBO Partners revealed the latest trend of tethered nomading, which basically means more remote workers are staying put in the U.S.

In fact, the study concluded that 53% of digital nomads in the U.S. plan to stay in the country year-round compared to just 10% who plan on jet-setting internationally.

Just about any U.S. city worth planting roots in is going to be costlier than traveling abroad, but that isn’t stopping remote workers from giving it a go.

After the record-setting temperatures of the summer, travelers are finally getting to partake in their favorite sports and physical activities without having to battle with the extreme heat.

If that sounds like you, the first stop in your itinerary should be Austria.

Walk along the picturesque paths of Trin, cycle alongside the Danube, or trek through the North Austrian lakes.

Just don’t forget to stop every once and again to take in the fields, mountains, and valleys that’ll be dressed in hues of orange in honor of the start of the new season.

New York’s subway system is convenient and efficient, making it a breeze for solo travelers to get around the city without spending a fortune on taxis or Ubers.

An unlimited 7-day MetroCard is $34, and individual rides on the subway are $2.90, so it’s affordable and easy to use public transportation once you get the hang of it.

New York is also one of the most walkable cities in the world, and you can often get around more easily and see more on your own two feet than by another form of transportation.

5. Save Money On Accommodation

One of the biggest hurdles that solo travelers face in NYC is the cost. It’s no secret that New York was recently ranked as the number one most expensive city in the world.

With the summer season officially coming to a close, it’s time to file away those summer travel memories and start planning for a fall trip.

While many of us are back at work and school, fall is the time to plan getaways closer to home, helping to maximize a long weekend and save those precious vacation days for a longer trip.

Luckily, across the U.S. cities and states are gearing up for the time when they show off the most.

Fall is a unique time across the country as the foliage sweeps across the landscape, the air starts to chill, and many enjoy their pumpkin spice latte (or pumpkin beer) in front of a football game.

While classic destinations such as New York, Seattle, and Boston are great fall options, it’s no secret that they are more expensive choices.

Lucky for us, there is no shortage of smaller and underrated cities across the country that also make for a great fall getaway without breaking the bank.

Here’s Why These 5 U.S. Cities Are Perfect For A Cheap Fall Getaway:

Buffalo, New York

As Western New York’s favorite city for a getaway, fall is when the up-and-coming city of Buffalo really comes alive. Blame it on Bills-mania, or the many Oktoberfests that are all over the region, but cheap activities in Buffalo are ripe for the (apple or pumpkin) picking in the fall.

With such close proximity to world-famous Niagara Falls, there is no shortage of places to stay in the Buffalo area on a budget. Make sure to check out the Ellicottville area and ride the chair lift for the best views of the foliage for around $12 a person.

And while catching a Buffalo Bills game might not be in the budget, tailgating is a cheap way to soak in the atmosphere for a fraction of the price. Uber to the stadium and party with the fans, then head to a fan-favorite Bills bar to catch the game.

Cleveland is a very underrated city, and although the main attractions here such as The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame are not free for out-of-towners, there are many things to do here that won’t cost a thing.

One thing Cleveland is known for is the many parks and walking trails around the city, offering free views and a workout as well. Without leaving the city you can explore the beloved Towpath Trail, which is over 100 miles long.

You can also check the events calendar at Crocker Park for free concerts or check out the Cleveland Public Theater’s free shows. Recently named one of the best free attractions in America, The Cleveland Museum of Art is always free and absolutely worth a visit.

For cheap eats, head to Cleveland’s historic public market, where everything from artisanal olives to homemade desserts are on offer for a fraction of what a sit-down meal would cost. Don’t forget to check out the impressive street art of the area when you are done eating your way through the market.

While Chicago might be the more famous Lake Michigan city, Milwaukee deserves consideration for a fall trip for many reasons. Cheaper, smaller, and quirkier than its more famous neighbor, Milwaukee is home to the bronze Fonz, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and the Harley Davidson Museum.

Accommodation won’t break the bank here, and Airbnb’s in the more eclectic neighborhoods might offer a chance to see the city as the locals do, at a fraction of the price of a downtown hotel.

Make sure to explore the Historic Third Ward, The Riverwalk, The Public Market, and the Basilica of St. Josaphat. For a low cost of $10, you can take a tour of the historic Miller Brewery, with samples along the way.

And if you are flying from Chicago or just want to add it as another stop on the trip, catch the Amtrak that runs multiple times daily for around $30.

The trendy city of Stowe might be Vermont’s number one claim to fame in the fall season, but missing a chance to visit Burlington at this time of year would be a mistake.
