Costa Mujeres

Though Costa Mujeres is a relatively new gem on the Mexican Caribbean’s map, it’s quickly becoming one of the region’s most sought-after destinations.

This pristine stretch of coastline is probably best known for its indulgent, all-inclusive resorts filled with state-of-the-art amenities like private beaches, gourmet dining experiences, and exclusive spas, just to name a few.

If you’re ever lucky enough to vacation in these parts of the Mexican Caribbean, you won’t want to miss out on Playa Nortem in nearby Isla Mujeres, consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches on Earth.

However, those feeling particularly adventurous might prefer the nearby Isla Blanca a bit more, known for kite surfing, water sports, and its secluded beauty.

What really sets Costa Mujeres apart from other gorgeous resort towns in the Mexican Caribbean is its laid-back, serene atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re a thousand miles away from the chaotic streets of neighboring Cancun.

Why I Love Visiting These 3 Popular European Cities In The Winter

There’s a lot to be said for traveling to Europe during the summer.

Long days, lots of sunshine, and a vibrant atmosphere make summer the most popular time of year to travel to Europe’s hotspots.

But there are three extremely popular destinations that I’ve visited in both summer and winter — and I found winter to be the best time to visit by far.

Those three cities are:
- Venice, Italy
- Dubrovnik, Croatia
- Barcelona, Spain
These destinations have several things in common: the peak season for visiting is in the summer, they’re all incredibly popular destinations that draw millions of visitors each year, they’re all notoriously expensive, they’re all popular with cruise ships, and they’re all suffering from overtourism.

Here’s why winter is actually the best time to travel to these trending European destinations.

Venice, Italy

Venice is one of my favorite cities in all of Europe. It’s truly magical and enchanting, with its breathtaking architecture and hundreds of bridges and canals.

During the summer months, though, visiting Venice can feel like visiting an overcrowded theme park rather than a historic city. The crowds have gotten so bad that Venice will soon implement a visitor fee of 5 euros to enter the city on peak days.

But Venice in the winter is a completely different story. The crowds are nearly nonexistent, and although the weather can be chilly and overcast, it adds to the moody, mysterious atmosphere of the city.

Winter is also the best time to visit for lower prices, with average hotel prices dropping more than 50% compared to the summer months.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is a stunning historic city on the Adriatic Sea, famous for its walled Old Town. This is a destination that has been exploding in popularity in recent years, with the summer of 2023 ushering in a new tourism record for Dubrovnik.

Like Venice, this is a city that has been suffering immensely from extreme crowds and overtourism. Dubrovnik has also seen skyrocketing prices in the past few years, especially after officially joining the Schengen Zone and adopting the euro as currency at the beginning of 2023.

Winter is my favorite time to visit Dubrovnik because there are very few tourists, and you can enjoy activities like walking the City Walls without shoulder-to-shoulder crowds.

It may be too cold to visit the beach or go swimming in the Adriatic Sea, but it’s still sunny and mild, with average temperatures in the high fifties during the winter.

Barcelona, Spain

Finally, Barcelona is another European hotspot I prefer visiting in the winter compared to the summer.

While there are certainly pros to visiting Barcelona in the summer — you can go to the beach, there are lots of concerts and festivals going on — there are also plenty of cons. Summer in Barcelona can be unbearably hot, and everything is extremely crowded.

This is because Barcelona is a major cruise port, so cruise tourists flood the city in the summer months (much like Venice and Dubrovnik.) It’s also peak season for tourism in general.

But Barcelona is very much a year-round city, so there’s no shortage of things to do during the winter. You can enjoy all that the city has to offer with far fewer crowds and lower prices. Plus Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate, so even during the winter, temperatures are often in the low sixties.

Surprisingly, Barcelona is also a great holiday destination. I love the city during the Christmas season, especially on Three Kings Day on January 6th, when there’s a huge parade.

European Hotspots Best Visited In Winter

Overall, Venice, Dubrovnik, and Barcelona are three European cities I definitely prefer visiting during the winter compared to the summer.

In the winter, you don’t have to deal with huge crowds, expensive prices, or extremely hot weather. You can enjoy these destinations without the hordes of cruise ship tourists and take advantage of lower off-season prices.

The Dominican Republic is located in the heart of the Caribbean meaning that it enjoys year-round warm weather.

This is important because the beautiful and pristine white-sand beaches are one of the main highlights of a trip to the Dominican Republic.

Away from the beaches the Dominican Republic boasts a large lush and green rainforest as well as the tallest mountain in the Caribbean. Pico Duarte attracts adventure enthusiasts such as climbers and hikers.

Like most of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is also a great year-round diving destination. Many of the dive sites in the country are suitable for beginners but if you’re new to the sport then head to the southern coast where currents are calmer.

Why You Should Book Your Winter Getaway To This Popular Beach Town In Mexico Right Now

The Mexican Caribbean has always been a hugely popular tourist destination for American travelers.

Boasting miles on miles of tropical coastline, a world-renowned hospitality industry, and luxurious resort zones, it is their go-to spot for relaxing and letting go of their mundane worries.

This year, however, this popularity seems to have soared to unprecedented new highs, leaving us wondering whether ‘shoulder season’ is even a concept still applicable to the region. That is particularly true in a trendy beach town that’s witnessing a record increase in bookings.

Playa Del Carmen is already filling up for winter, and travelers are now being advised to book their year-end getaway as soon as possible before they’re left out:

There Are Far Fewer Rooms Available This Winter Already

Following the start of the school year, it’s normally expected for bookings to decrease as families return home from the holidays and resort communities slow down operations in preparation for a much busier winter.

In that sense, 2023 has been rather atypical, as numerous destinations in Quintana Roo, especially those straddling the Mayan Riviera, have been recording a high number of hotel reservations as early as September.

A small beach town a short one-hour drive south of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen is no exception.

According to data gathered by the Cancun Sun, the leading news source on everything Cancun, 40 percent of rooms in Carmen are already filled for the peak season, which comprises December 2023 through February 2024.

September has been traditionally less busy, but now reservations are beginning to build as early as the fall period, with vacationers anticipating the high winter prices and either taking trips during the shoulder months or booking their winter getaway well in advance.

That seems to be the case for a majority, as highlighted by Osner Arjona, President of the Association of Small Hotels of Playa Del Carmen, who was quoted saying the town already has a ‘movement of reservations’ for late 2023 and early 2024.

This trend is expected to intensify further in October, the busiest month for winter bookings, as prices begin to increase and undecided tourists are forced to either make a decision or miss out on their Mexican Caribbean experience altogether.

The fact that bookings already sit at a whopping 40% should be perceived as worrying for those who plan on jetting off to Playa del Carmen this winter, as we are still early on into fall, and vacancy is already down significantly, as low as they would have been normally later in the year.

There is simply no way of telling how much lower occupancy rates will be come October or November.

The Longer You Wait, The Less Attractive Getaway Deals Will Be

While Carmen is unlikely to sell out completely – there are far too many accommodation options to consider, from luxurious resorts to more affordable AirBnB listings – the main concern here is the fluctuation in prices.

The higher the occupation rate, the more expensive accommodation gets, as a result of decreased competition and surging demand, so that is why you are advised to make those reservations right now, not only to secure the best prices, but also a beachfront spot.

Still, you may be wondering why exactly Carmen is suddenly on everyone’s radar.

Why Is Playa Del Carmen So Popular?

Carmen has a high concentration of luxurious resorts, wellness centers, and entertainment venues that place it at the front of the Mexican Caribbean’s tourism offer, up there with Cancun and Tulum.

In fact, one could even argue these three beach zones complement each other, with Cancun serving as the entertainment capital, Tulum the cultural heart and nightlife spot, and Playa Del Carmen the more laid-back alternative.

When going abroad, Americans strongly favor destinations where it’s easy to go and where they can get pampered without worrying excessively about the complexities of planning an international trip. With only 11 days of paid vacation on average per year on average, they want an all-inclusive vacay.

Carmen’s well-equipped resort zone gives them just that, with all of their favorite hospitality brands like the Hyatt, Thompson, Fairmont, and Marriott (just to name a few) having set up residence on the pristine coast.

Other than the ancient Mayan ruins and indigenous culture, the Mexican Caribbean is often associated with the five-star beachfront properties and the thin, white-sand beaches bounded by turquoise-colored seas, all boxes Playa Del Carmen effortlessly ticks off.

As it is much smaller than Cancun, it has a reputation for being more exclusive, though it is not exactly as quaint as the lesser-known Akumal: thousands flock to its bars and beach clubs every weekend for a taste of the (in)famous local nightlife.

It Is Extremely Safe

Another reason why Carmen has been exploding in popularity is the high level of safety, following improvements made by the current administration, responsible for the revitalization of the tourist zone, and deployment of more police to critical sites.

Due to the increased surveillance and zero-tolerance approach towards criminals, it is now one of the safest resort towns in Mexico, following years of being ill-reputed as a dangerous place for tourists.

The Cancun Sun went as far as stating Carmen may be added to the ‘Magic Neighborhoods’ program, a designation awarded by the Mexican Ministry of Tourism in recognition of an area’s cultural, historical, environmental, or economic significance.

The town will also be easier to get to from Cancun this winter, as it will be a stop on the Maya Train route, a new scenic railway linking all of the main tourist hotspots across the Mexican Caribbean, yet another factor that is certain to boost tourism and impact on hotel occupancy.

All things considered, it’s best you book that getaway sooner rather than later.

Right now, the train is expected to begin operations in December 2023, just in time for the winter season.

Playa Del Carmen has become a hotspot in Mexico known for its stunning beaches, lively parties and great nightlife, and luxurious resorts.

5. Tulum

Another one of the top international destinations this winter is Tulum, Mexico. Tulum has long been a popular destination thanks to its gorgeous beaches, luxe beach clubs, high-end dining and nightlife, and nearby Mayan ruins, but it’s likely set to explore even more in popularity.

This is because it will be easier than ever to get to Tulum this winter. Previously, travelers had to fly into Cancun, two hours north of Tulum, and then drive or take a bus.

But in December, Tulum is opening a brand-new international airport with direct flights from the United States. Travelers will also have the option of taking the new Maya Train from Cancun to Tulum.

And the opening of the Maya Train in December will also make it easier than before to visit Bacalar (AKA the “new Tulum”) and Chetumal, two Quintana Roo destinations south of Tulum.

4. Bahamas

The Bahamas is an island paradise within close reach for many American travelers. Made up of 700 islands, only 30 of which are inhabited, the Bahamas lie to the east of Florida.

Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is one of the most popular destinations in the country, known for its sprawling Atlantis resort. However, other islands like Great Exuma (famous for its wild swimming pigs) and Eleuthra are also perfect if you’re looking for a getaway to island paradise.

Several airlines, including JetBlue and Alaska Airlines, have launched new direct flights to the Bahamas from the U.S. this year.

3. Punta Cana

We’re getting into the top three territory now with Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. American travelers have been visiting the Dominican Republic in record numbers this year, and it’s not hard to see why.

Resume.io dissected thousands of Instagram posts using the hashtag #digitalnomad in an effort to discover where most of the digital nomads reside around the globe, and they found that 3 cities in South America outranked all others.

After scouring through thousands of posts across all continents, they found that London had the most vibrant nomad community in Europe, NYC in the U.S., and Bangkok was found to be the second-busiest destination for nomads globally.

From this report, it’s clear to see that digital nomads take up space all over the world. Offering sunny weather, low cost of living, and affordable flights from the U.S., nomads wanting to live in South America are increasing in large numbers.

According to Resume.io, Buenos Aires, Rio De Janeiro, and Medellin saw the highest populations of nomads based on the posts found on social media.

Buenos Aires

Ranking at number 1, the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires has 8.3% more digital nomads than Rio. The vibrant city didn’t make the top spot on Resume.io’s 2022 report, which shows that it’s growing in popularity: so now’s the time to go!

A cultural haven in South America with reasonable prices, it’s no surprise digital nomads are drawn to this way of living.

Local start-ups and a friendly expat community make it easy for those relocating to get involved with the local cultures and people.

The city heard, and they delivered! Buenos Aires has many co-working spaces around the city for remote workers. A few of these spaces host events specifically for digital nomads, making it easy to grow your community as a newbie.

It can often be quite intimidating to move to a new country- especially when there’s a language barrier. Fortunately for nomads, Buenos Aires makes every effort to make the move less stressful and chaotic.

Rio De Janeiro

Sun, seaside, and a lively culture? What more could you ask for? Often considered one of the friendliest cities in South America, Rio makes a big move feel effortless.

Income requirements for the visa are to make at least $1,500 a month — which is quite low compared to most (or you must show you have a minimum of $18,000 saved).

Medellin

Colombia has certainly grown over the years in terms of safety and tourism.

Resume.io shows that 3 cities in this South American country made it in the top 10 for 2023: Bogota (#9), Santa Marta (#7), and Medellin (#3).

The government is hoping to draw over 45,000 nomads to the country by next summer after releasing their new digital nomad visa earlier this year.

While not all nomads crave the buzzing city life, the outskirts of Medellin are also filled with quaint neighborhoods with vibrant traveler populations.

I visited Colombia last summer, staying in the popular (and safe) area of El Poblado. A chic community just 20 minutes from the city of Medellin, it’s the perfect spot for digital nomads.

With its tree-lined streets, hostels, and an array of restaurants/bars, this neighborhood is teeming with nomads and solo travelers. There are also many cafes around and working spaces.

Why? Winter is the off season at most national parks in the United States, which means that you can enjoy lower prices and fewer crowds.

Many national parks look different (but equally as beautiful) in the winter compared to the more popular summer season. As long as you don’t mind bundling up for the cold weather, you can enjoy a great winter trip to U.S. national parks.

Here are the national parks that are best visited during the winter in order to save money, according to a study from The Manual.

1. Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is America’s first national park and one of its most popular. November and December are the best months to visit Yellowstone to save money, with average hotel rates at 50% compared to the peak months of June and July.

Although Yellowstone gets very cold during the winter and some roads become impossible from mid-December to mid-March, a November or early December trip is a great time to visit to save money and still enjoy this iconic national park.

2. Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado is the fourth most-visited national park in the United States. Like Yellowstone, it’s most expensive to visit in June and July.

But hotel rates in nearby Estes Park (the town closest to the national park) fall from $180 per night to $85 per night during the months of November, December, and January.

Winter is a fantastic time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park because of the beautiful snow-capped peaks and landscapes and numerous outdoor recreation options. You can try snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sledding, and more during the winter.

3. Zion National Park

Summer is a popular time to visit Zion National Park, along with spring and fall. In fact, hotel rates near Zion in the towns of St. George and Hurricane are highest from February through April, while they are 25% to 30% less in December and January.

Winter is a good time to visit Zion because, unlike the previous two parks on this list, the weather is not nearly as cold in December and January (although you’ll still want to bundle up!)

Zion’s rocky red cliffs and peaks are even prettier during the winter when covered by a light dusting of snow, and you can enjoy this park without the usual major crowds.

4. Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona is the second most popular national park in the United States. Millions of visitors flock to this national park every year to see the iconic landscapes of the Grand Canyon, which is 277 miles long and 18 miles wide.

The most expensive time to visit this national park is April, May, and June when hotel rates top $200 per night. However, in December and January, you can find hotels nearby for as little as $75 per night and enjoy this popular national park without the crowds.

5. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Finally, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a great one to visit in the winter. This national park on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina is the most visited in the world.

Peak season is July through October, but those who visit during the winter months of December and January can find better deals on hotels in nearby Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.

Being located in the Southern United States, winter in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is not quite as cold as other parts of the country, although it can still be quite chilly.

Greece has wrapped up the summer season as Europe’s top destination, surpassing the likes of Spain, France, and even Italy.

It’s clear that tourists are flocking to the country’s idyllic, white-sanded beaches in record numbers.

According to the INSETE research body, the Mediterranean country is expecting over 4 million international visitors this month, and there are three destinations that have recorded the largest increase in tourists since last year.

Thessaloniki

This highly influential port city is set to become Greece’s trendiest hotspot this fall, expecting the biggest visitor arrival increase for September – a jump of almost 20% from the same time last year.

With an estimated 315,000 tourists arriving this month, Thessaloniki is about to turn into the country’s liveliest hotspot.

You can expect some of the city’s main attractions (The White Tower of Thessaloniki, Aristotelous Square, The Archeological Museum of Thessaloniki, and the ancient Roman Forum) to be extra busy during weekends, so make sure to plan ahead.

Since Greece is mostly known as a summer destination in the international travel community, the fact that a port city like Thessaloniki can experience such a surge of visitors only once the temperatures cool down might come as a surprise.

However, if you ever get to see the city for yourself, you’ll see why it’s so much more than just another resort town.

For starters, though Thessaloniki lies adjacent to the Aegean Sea, sunbathing in the city is not an option.

Those who spend their summers here need to travel back and forth to nearby beaches if they want to tan or take a swim.

Instead of beaches, the city boasts a long, stunning promenade that borders the sea, offering unparalleled views, especially this time of the year.

Beware though, that nights can get pretty windy, so make sure to bring a jacket with you if you’re a fan of seaside walks.

Shopping enthusiasts will have the time of their lives here. Aside from the numerous shops located near Aristotle Square, they can also find a great outlet center named One Salonica right near the outskirts of the city.

Some of the most popular brands in the world (Nike, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Guess, Lacoste, Levi’s, Tommy Hilfiger, etc.) sell their merchandise here at heavily discounted prices,

Athens

Though the capital comes in at number two in terms of its increase in visitors from last year (15.4%), it’s still drawing in the highest number of tourists in the country.

Over 1.2 million people from more than 45 countries are expected to visit Athens this September.

Between the Parthenon, the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora of Athens, and the many, many museums that proudly display the city’s rich history, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to filling up your itinerary with cultural landmarks.

Moreover, the city provides all the perks of spending a fun night out in a gorgeous Mediterranean city without all the extra costs of getting around a place like Rome or Milan.

Rhodes

The third spot on the list is held by Rhodes, a famous summer hotspot that continues to draw in more than 437,000 visitors a month even as its beaches start to empty.

The largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands has apparently recovered from the devastating fires of July, seeing a 7.1% increase in visitors this fall compared to the same time last year.

Home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the island holds remarkable cultural value that tourists are able to enjoy all year long.

Its natural beauty, delectable cuisine, and fun year-round events further explain why tourists are still flocking to the Greek island even though peak season is over.

Summer in Italy is peak season, with the months of July and August seeing the highest crowds. However, things considerably cool off (both literally and figuratively) in September and October.

But during the fall, you won’t have to wait in a massive line at popular tourist attractions like Rome’s Colosseum or Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice. You won’t find yourself elbowing through crowds in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery or searching in vain for an open spot on the beach in Positano.

Instead, you can enjoy fewer crowds and a calmer pace of travel during the fall. Many popular spots are devoid of crowds during the fall since it’s still an underrated time to travel to Italy.

2. Better Weather

Another benefit to visiting Italy in the fall is the milder weather.

Unfortunately, Italy has been suffering from extreme heat waves during the past few summers.

In July, temperatures hit a record-breaking 118° F (48° C) in parts of Sardinia and Sicily, the latter of which suffered from debilitating and destructive fires sparked by the extreme heat.

Throughout the rest of the country, temperatures were regularly above 100° F (38° C) this summer. Such extreme heat takes the fun out of exploring Italy.

It’s hard to enjoy sightseeing at the Colosseum or the Roman Forum under the scorching sun, and it makes other outdoor activities like hiking in Cinque Terre unpleasant and borderline dangerous.

This is why fall is such a great time to visit Italy. In the southern part of the country, the weather cools down considerably, but it’s still warm enough that you can have a beach getaway in a destination like Sardinia or the Amalfi Coast.

In the northern part of the country, fall also brings pleasant, cooler weather to destinations like Venice that can be unbearable in the summer.

3. Cheaper Prices

Finally, cheaper prices are drawing more and more travelers to Italy during the fall.

From early June through the end of August, travelers can expect to pay elevated prices for hotels in Italy. Not to mention, flights are also much more expensive.

With flight prices up more than 25% in 2023, many travelers found the cost of a trip to Italy to be too much this summer. However, flights during the months of September, October, and November tend to be significantly cheaper than flights during the summer.

You can also save a fortune on hotels in Italy during the fall, especially in coastal destinations like the Amalfi Coast, Ischia, or Cinque Terre where fall marks the beginning of the “shoulder season” slump in tourism.

Although fall is becoming a more and more popular time of year to visit Italy, you can still take advantage of these benefits right now while it remains somewhat underrated.
