Soon, flying into Cancun will no longer be a requirement to reach Tulum as the new international airport is now open, with new flights from the U.S. beginning to arrive in spring.

Plus, travelers will be able to hop aboard the highly anticipated Maya Train to visit Tulum as well. However you get here, you simply won’t regret being here.

This magic town is beginning to feel more like a magic city with its growth and surge in popularity. Already home to a booming arts scene, travelers have been packing in for more natural attractions, such as Playa Paraiso Beach and the Cristal and Escondido cenotes.

Many of the beautiful island countries that make up the Caribbean have been experiencing a real boom in tourism so far this winter.

A recent report showed that several of the countries in this beautiful part of the world are reporting double-digit growth at the end of 2023 and becoming hugely popular as winter sun destinations.

But one set of islands in particular is really making its mark in the minds of travelers this year.

The U.S. Virgin Islands

Tourism visitor numbers for the fourth quarter of 2023 are up almost 40% on the same period in 2019, according to the latest information from the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism.

What’s driving this surge besides the fact that this country is very safe and most people’s idea of paradise?

Let’s take a closer look:

Sun, Sea, Sand, And Culture

The U.S. Virgin Islands are made up of three main islands – St Croix, St Thomas, and St John – and are situated just off the east coast of Puerto Rico, with the British Virgin Islands on the other side.

St Croix has a fascinating history, having previously been colonial territory of England, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Malta, and even Denmark.

The latter of those gives the island’s largest town its name – Christiansted – and it’s a beautiful place of colorful buildings, old forts, and quaint cobbled streets.

Besides the colonial history, St Croix has its fair share of stunning beaches, such as Rainbow Beach and Cane Bay Beach, as well as great nightlife and casinos.

Over in St Thomas, you can find some of the U.S. Virgin Islands’ best dining with fantastic seafood restaurants and local eateries run by friendly folk.

This island has plenty of fascinating history of its own, being home to the 17th-century Danish-Norwegian fort of Fort Christian.

Not to be outdone, St John is widely regarded as a premiere snorkeling and diving location in the Caribbean.

It is also home to the incredible Virgin Islands National Park, which covers 5,500 acres and is packed with hiking trails and jungle experiences.

Air Travel Availability Is Improving

Americans can already fly to the U.S. Virgin Islands from a host of different cities, but the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism states that seat capacity has increased from the mainland by 23% to the island of St Croix and 21% to St Thomas.

The tourist board is working hard to continue increasing the flight options and states, “Our focus is on adding flights to St. Croix from the United States, Canada, and Europe.”

Meanwhile, Trunk Bay on St Thomas was named one of the world’s best beaches and also featured in Conde Nast’s Best Places To Go In 2023 List.

A Great Cruise Stop Off

The tourism board has also been working closely with cruise companies to expand the opportunities to visit via this mode of travel.

It has recently partnered with the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association to help with this.

Predictions are that the cruise passenger visitor numbers could grow by as much as 80% in 2024.

Easy For Americans To Visit

For American travelers, visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands is essentially the same as a domestic trip due to the fact it is official United States territory.

If you are flying from the U.S. mainland or Puerto Rico, you do not even need a passport to enter these islands, and you can enjoy other benefits such as online check-in and no need for a visa.

There are many tempting destinations when it comes to considering a European trip, not least of all in sunny Spain.

Cities like Barcelona, Seville, and Madrid are tempting enough before you even begin to consider beach destinations such as the Costa del Sol, the Balearic Islands, or even the Canary Islands – Spain really does have it all.

And the fact of the matter is that American travelers have simply been loving Spain over the past year.

The latest data from the Spanish Ministry of Tourism shows that more than 3.5 million Americans have visited Spain in 2023, which is over 17% higher than in the last pre-pandemic year 2019.

And the forecast for 2024 shows that this figure could continue to grow – so just why is one of Europe’s cultural gems so popular with American travelers right now?

Universal Appeal

As mentioned above, Spain has a little bit of something for everyone.

Iconic attractions such as the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona or Plaza Mayor in Madrid will always draw in the crowds who love to experience the archetypal European city break.

Then there’s the region of Andalusia in the south of Spain with intriguing cities that show the country’s Moorish history such as Seville, Cordoba, and Malaga.

From Malaga, head east along the coast to find some of Spain’s best resorts, which are perfect for families and couples.

There are even many idyllic island destinations to choose from, such as the Balearic Islands, which recently smashed their tourism record, and the volcanic Canary Islands, which lie off the coast of northwest Africa.

For those who prefer to wander from the beaten path, Spain has some lesser-known destinations such as Galicia that are ideal for discovering different, more rustic sides of the country.

Flights Are Plentiful And Affordable

The choice of flights from the U.S. to Spain has increased alongside the popularity of the country.

Americans can fly nonstop to a wide range of destinations in Spain including the likes of Mallorca.

According to travel booking website Kayak, roundtrip flights from New York to Spain can cost as little as $400, and from Los Angeles, they can cost around $500.

However, the prices of flights vary massively depending on the time of year – be flexible with your dates and you’re bound to find a good deal.

Digital Nomads Are Welcome

The Spanish digital nomad visa has been very popular since it first launched back in May 2023 as part of the country’s StartUp Act.

To be eligible, you must prove you earn double the Spanish minimum wage (about $2,700 per month), must be from outside the European Economic Area, and must not have been a resident in Spain in the last five years.

You can stay for up to a year on the visa and can then apply for an extension after that – you can also bring a spouse or partner, but the amount you must earn goes up by around 25% if you do.

The visa even allows you to work for Spanish companies, provided the money from that makes up no more than 20% of your total income.

Cities such as Seville and Valencia have proven to be very popular hangouts for digital nomads thanks to their great weather, interesting culture, and great transport links.

Spanish Life Is Great

Immersing yourself in the culture of Spain for a few weeks is good for the soul.

Life here is a slower pace than in America, with time taken out to enjoy coffee with friends an essential part of life (as are afternoon siestas).

Evening plans tend to happen much later in Spain than in America too – if you’re heading out for dinner, realistically don’t even think about it until at least 8pm (and even that is a little early for Spain).

People in Spain also know how to throw a party, with a rich calendar of fiestas throughout the year that are often a great way to see some of the traditions in action such as Flamenco dancing and great music.

After three years of confusing travel rules, 2023 finally marked the comeback of tourism across the globe.

Throughout the year, we have seen a boom in bookings as travelers took to the skies in droves in search of that bucket list spot they could only dream about visiting a while back (but couldn’t).

As per usual, Google has been tracking this fast-growing trend, and in the top ten of their ‘Year in Search’ list, one country in particular was highlighted as the most sought-after destination in its own continent, as well as a cultural behemoth awaiting (re)discovery now that normality has resumed.

Egypt is the eighth most-searched country currently, and with record growth expected ahead of the annual round-up, it seems pretty safe to say it has been one of 2023’s rising stars.

The question is: why?

Why Is Egypt So Popular In Google Searches Right Now?

A country as ancient as civilization itself, Egypt has been on the radar of Americans for years, and you know already why that may be.

It is the land of Pharaos, boasting unique landscapes, a fascinating culture, and a plethora of world wonders.

We won’t bore you with yet another copy-and-paste article on the marvels of pyramid-dotted Egypt: there are plenty of those doing the rounds already.

Instead, we would like to divert your attention to why Egypt is trending right now, and posting record rates of growth in 2023 specifically, and what has changed compared to previous years.

In other words, why are more Americans taking the 11-hour-plus Transatlantic flight to Cairo when there is an exhaustive list of alternative destinations they could explore instead?

Egypt Was A Less Tense To Visit In 2023

First of all, if you’ve been to Egypt at all in the last two or three years, and you have returned yet again in 2023, you might have noticed the atmosphere is a lot less tense.

The pandemic has finally subsided, and the unfathomable sanitary controls that changed with little warning numerous times in the span of a single week no longer apply.

U.S. citizens – in fact, every other foreigner – can once again visit Egypt curb-free.

Other than the visa-on-arrival policy, a bureaucratic hurdle the Egyptian Government is yet to loosen, you are no longer required to satisfy health-related entry requirements, fill out complicated forms at the airport, or observe crazy rules while being a guest at a resort.

The return of normality is one reason why Egypt’s soaring in popularity in 2023, but that is not all.

After all, every single country has axed restrictions as well, some much sooner than Egypt.

Is Egyptomania Back?

This brings us to reason number two, and perhaps the most important one of all: the renewed interest in cultural expeditions among Americans.

2023 has been the year of the culturephile, and the resurgence of South American colonial cities, off-path Europe, and mystical Southeast Asia as trendy tourism hotspots only go to show there are truly no limits as to how far Westerners will go to have more meaningful experiences when traveling.

In terms of cultural expeditions, Egypt is really a no-brainer.

Its History dates back several millennia, and some of the oldest structures created by man can be found within its borders, including the Great Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza, but these alone can’t explain Egyptomania picking up steam this year specifically.

Instead, we must look at new developments that are fuelling more searches, and thus holiday bookings than the expected average, and the biggest one of them is the soon-to-be-launched Great Egyptian Museum, opening in early 2024.

20 years in the making, and to the tune of a billion dollars, this majestic center for the culture and sciences is finally bowing after much anticipation, presenting to the public for the first time a vast selection of artifacts that previously did not have a permanent home.

One of them is Tutankhamen’s sarcophagus, its associated 5,000 artifacts that were unearthed when the legendary Pharao’s tomb was discovered in the 1920s, a 3,200-year-old statue of Ramses the Great, and the relatively well-preserved sun-powered, 2,500-year-old Khufu ship.

Aside from the cultural stuff, a string of new hotel openings and experiences has improved Egypt’s tourist offer this year, from a luxurious Four Seasons palace in Sharm El Sheik, the country’s leading resort city, to the announcement of a new 282-key state-of-the-art Hilton in Marsa Alam.

Elsewhere along the Nile, cruise liner Viking has debuted one of its most remarkable products yet, the five-star Viking Aton river cruise, taking guests on a 12-day ‘Pharaos & Pyramids’ adventure, starting with a three-night stay in Cairo before proceeding to an eight-day journey down the Nile.

Points of interest include the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens, as well as its counterpart Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings, visits to the Temples of Khnum, Dendera, Abu Simbel, and High Dam, and traditional Nubian villages.

All in all, it’s an exciting period to visit Egypt, as the country is waking up from its pandemic slumber, and it has a number of tricks up its sleeve.

Did we mention already it even has its own Bali? Yep. Get those flight tickets right away.

Egypt Is Affordable By Western Standards

Finally, a huge part of why Egypt is racking up large arrival numbers is its high affordability.

For an all-expenses-paid vacation on the Red Sea coast, you will likely have to fork out at least a couple thousand dollars for a one-week stint at a resort, but for those on a budget and who are not necessarily looking to splurge on a vacation, they can definitely get by on a ‘mid’ $361 for the week.

The figure is based on data gathered by Budget Your Trip, and includes acommodation, transport, food, and tourist attractions.

According to the platform, in the past travelers have spent on average $26 per day, or the equivalent in the local currency, when opting for a mid-range style of travel, or a very reasonable $68 when indulging in some luxury.

The average cost of an overnight at a budget hotel is $23, though it can be a lot more expensive depending on a traveler’s preferences and whether they are the Four Seasons or family-owned, affordable neighborhood hotel type.

The point is that consumer prices in Egypt are typically lower for tourists due to the devalued currency, and that is why it won’t weigh heavily on anyone’s pockets, even if they are actively looking to spend more on comfort.

Egypt has made its mark in 2023 as one of the trendiest destinations of the post-pandemic scene, and based on Google searches alone, it could be set for a historical 2024.

Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam – the choices when it comes to visiting Southeast Asia are handsome.

But what if you’re looking for somewhere a little more off-path in this region?

The answer is the beautiful and underrated country that borders all three of those aforementioned favorites: Laos.

This landlocked nation has enjoyed an impressive 285% year-on-year increase in visitors in 2023 according to local media, with travelers from the U.S. making up a decent chunk of those figures.

So, just why is Laos grabbing its own share of the Southeast Asia limelight and why could it be the perfect place for you to sample this fascinating part of the world? Let’s find out.

An Affordable Entry To Southeast Asia

One of the main things Laos (or the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to give it its full title) has going for it is the fact that it’s a cheap place to visit.

That’s a general rule for Southeast Asia, but Laos definitely comes up cheaper than some of its near rivals – it’s not out of the question to budget as little as $40 a day, maybe even less in remote areas.

The currency used in the country is the Lao Kip, which works out to about 20,000 to the dollar at the time of writing.

It’s worth bearing in mind that the U.S. dollar and the Thai Baht are widely accepted in Laos, but make sure you have some local currency with you just in case.

You should also be prepared for mixed currency transactions, e.g., paying in dollars and getting change in kip.

An Alternative Way To Cruise

Cruise? But didn’t I mention earlier that Laos is landlocked?

You’re right, I did – however, literally hundreds of miles of one of Asia’s most famous rivers runs right through the north of the country and then along its western border with Thailand.

That river? The mighty Mekong – and you can enjoy cruises up and down this amazing river to see parts of the dense forest interior of the country that are inaccessible via roads.

While no cruise is strictly ‘cheap’, doing one such as this is likely to be far kinder to your wallet than an ocean cruise around the Caribbean or Mediterranean.

Fascinating Culture And Influences

Laos is a predominantly Buddhist country with many temples and religious complexes dedicated to the faith.

This makes for a laidback, almost spiritual vibe to many of the places you’ll visit.

You can also see a European colonial influence in the larger towns and cities here, as Laos was a protectorate of France from 1893 to 1953.

Another interesting thing to note about Laos is that it’s the most bombed country in the world, with a fascinating museum in Luang Prabang dedicated to this fact.

There is still a lot of unexploded ordnance in the country, so it’s best not to go off wandering into the wilderness on your own.

The Friendliest Folk

This is something people say about a lot of places, but take it from me when I say that Laotian people are incredibly friendly.

Provided you are respectful to them and their culture, you will be warmly welcomed and often asked many questions about the country you come from and what it’s like there.

The country is generally safe with low levels of crime too, making it an ideal solo traveler backpacking destination.

Three Places You Should See in Laos:

1. Luang Prabang

This mountain city lies at the confluence of the Mekong and the Nam Khan rivers and has previously been rated as one of the top 10 cities in Asia to visit.

It features an enchanting blend of traditional Buddhist temples and shrines, combined with a vibrant food scene that is influenced by a large number of European expats who live here.

2. Vientiane

The capital of Laos is also the country’s largest city and a major port on the banks of the Mekong River.

The city perfectly blends ancient Buddhist architecture with more modern colonial buildings from its time under French rule.

3. Vang Vieng

This small and unassuming rural town has become an iconic place to visit for travelers thanks to its incredible outdoor adventure offerings and growing party scene.

Think motorcycling through jungles on mountain roads, bathing at the foot of dramatic waterfalls, and riding down the river in a rubber ring (yes, really).

4 Lesser Known Destinations In Mexico Surging In Popularity Right Now

Mexico is currently one of the most popular international destinations, having hosted over 30 million visitors last year alone and is poised for additional growth in 2023, and though Cancun and Los Cabos lead booking trends, they’re not the only ones behind this resounding success.

Now more than ever, travelers are seeking more unique, authentic experiences when going abroad, particularly Americans who, for the best part of the previous three years, were forced to be confined at home – unsurprisingly, interest in lesser-known, off-path sites has surged.

In Mexico, it’s the unsung ‘Magical Cities’ that are helping boost recovery, and five in particular are being touted as the next tourist hotspots:

Tequisquiapan

The first one is Tequisquiapan, a traditional municipality in the state of Queretaro, in Central Mexico, famous for its cobblestone streets, rustic buildings with wooden windowsills and wrought iron ornaments, and its colonial legacy.

As reported by Cronica earlier this year, Tequisquiapan is one of Mexico’s criminally underrated wellness hubs, as besides the historical weight it carries as a 300-year-old settlement, it boasts a high number of resort spas and natural hot springs.

For decades now, Mexicans have been driving all the way here from neighboring Queretaro City and as far as Mexico City for weekend escapades, yet Tequisquiapan is only now reaching its global breakthrough.

At this year’s International Tourism Fait (FITUR), held in Madrid, it took home the award for best ‘Wellness Tourism Paradise‘: there are as many as 1,200 hotel rooms available, over 1,000 AirBnB stays, and more than 250 eateries where visitors can experiment with traditional Mexican cuisine.

Tequila

Though Tequila is not exactly an unheard-of gem, being a permanent feature in travel brochures on the cultural side of Mexico, it’s definitely not one to be underestimated amid the ongoing Mexican Reinassance, with over 334,000 guests registered between January and August of this year.

On average, this small, quaint town hosts half a million tourists per year, indicating it is on a clear path towards recovery, if not record-breaking figures come December, and this cannot be solely attributed to the trademark distilled beverage which originated in Tequila:

A perfectly-preserved colonial settlement of Spanish Mexico, home to a beautiful central plaza, regal palaces that combine elements of both Iberian and Moorish architecture, much like continental Spain, as well as the iconic Church of Santiago Apostol, with its striking stone facade.

Owing to its rich History, architectural wealth, and the immaterial heritage that is tequila (the drink), made from the blue agave plant, native to the region, Tequila is one of the best destinations to sample some culture South of the border.

Cholula

Perhaps Mexico’s best-hidden secret and one most foreigners are yet to be let in on, Cholula is a literal ‘Magical Town‘ of the state of Puebla that has recently attained the distinction of being the most visited statewide.

Though it is attached to the state capital, Cholula has a unique character, and it stands on its own as a cultural center, divided into eighteen neighborhoods, each of them with its own patron saint, and concentrating both colonial-era and ancient landmarks.

The most impressive of them, the Great Pyramid, is the largest complex of its kind in the Americas, as well as the largest pyramid by volume in the world today.

It may not rise as high as Mayan structures across Yucatan, or the Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, but its base dimensions are much wider.

Other attractions in Cholula include the San Gabriel Franciscan Convent, established by the Spaniards in the 16th century – one of the oldest in the Americas – and the colorful, shop-lined Morelos Street.

According to local authorities, alongside other ‘Magical Towns’ of Puebla, Cholula has attracted more than 1.4 million this year already, 68 percent more than in 2022.

Izamal

Yucatan is best known for Caribbean beaches, state-of-the-art resorts and luxurious shopping, but there’s yet another side to the paradisaical peninsula foreigners are only now starting to discover: it is crammed with picturesque, Instagrammable towns that just ooze character.

One of those is Izamal, ‘The Yellow City’ of Yucatan, where the cobble-laden alleys are flanked by vibrant, jaune-colored houses; two cultures clash – Hispanic and pre-Columbian – and Spanish structures, erected out of Mayan stones, dominate the grid-like, yellow landscape.

Walking around Izamal, tourists will be met with the City of Hills, an archaeological complex that once housed a Mayan outpost before Spanish settlers stormed in and occupied the area, and a large Franciscan Monastery, whose open atrium is second in size only to the Vatican.

This year, the town has been experiencing a popularity boom as demand for cultural expeditions grows out of Cancun, roughly three hours away, and it is set to consolidate itself as a popular destination once the Maya Train launches December 1, with a stop in Izamal.

There are some places you know instinctively you want to visit. You learn about them in school, read about them in books, and hear about your friends and family members’ adventures there.

But there are some lesser-known destinations that you discover later and unexpectedly.

One relatively new trend in finding these unexpected spots is choosing to visit a destination because you saw it in a television series or film.

This is sometimes known as the ‘Game of Thrones’ effect because the number of visitors to Dubrovnik exploded once it was featured in the series.

And now it’s set to happen again.

Here’s why this lesser-known European city is surging in popularity:

Beautiful Bucharest

Research by Expedia has found that search volume for trips to Romania is up 105% since the Netflix series Wednesday aired.

Filming for the series partly took place in the Romanian capital of Bucharest, and this beautiful city is seeing a huge increase in tourism as a result. A trend that is only expected to increase in 2024.

And it’s easy to see why.

The city’s architecture is considered some of the best in Europe. The Romanian Athenaeum is one of the most beautiful and photographed buildings in the city and puts some of the architecture in Athens itself to shame!

The Palace of the Parliament is another awe-inspiring structure worth exploring. This is the world’s second-largest Parliament building as well as the heaviest building in the world.

And of course the highlight of any visit to Bucharest is a trip to the Old Town where you will find neoclassical and neo-baroque buildings alongside terraces, cafes, restaurants, and shops.

This is the bustling heart of Bucharest and is a particularly popular spot with tourists year-round.

A Winter Wonderland

Winters are cold in Bucharest and the city often sees snowfall. This creates a winter wonderland effect and if you visit in December this will only be enhanced by the twinkly lights and the abundance of Christmas markets.

Though not as famous as the Christmas markets in Germany or France the Christmas markets in Bucharest are just as well regarded.

Targul de Craciun Bucuresti includes over 100 Christmas cottages and is just one of several Christmas markets spread out across the city.

Although not an obvious choice for a winter vacation thanks to the harsh cold weather and the shortened daylight hours, Bucharest is a city that comes alive during the winter months and the locals certainly don’t let the weather stop all the fun you can have in the capital.

Because winter is low season in the city this is also the most affordable time for budget travelers to visit Bucharest and a great time to really immerse yourself in the local culture.

A Hub For Relaxation

Romania is a country best known for its fictional vampires and its incredible castles and fortresses. But not many people know that it is a European hub for relaxation too.

Therme Budapest is Europe’s largest wellness and relaxation center. Therme is a temple to relaxation and is so much more than a simple spa. It offers 10 pools, scented saunas, and the largest urban beach in Europe. You’ll also find waterslides or aerobics sessions depending on the kind of experience you’re looking for.

It’s also incredibly good value: a 3 hour session costs from just 59 Romanian Leu ($12.72).

Prefer something smaller and more intimate? Therme isn’t the only thermal spa in Bucharest, although it is the most famous. Romania has a long history of mineral springs and thermal bathing and there are several other smaller spas in the city.

Beat The Crowds

Even though Bucharest is poised to witness an explosion of popularity, it will remain considerably less crowded than other major European destinations like Rome and Paris.

It hasn’t been on the tourist radar for long which means that it’s still considered an off the beaten track destination with the low crowd levels to match.

That’s not to say there won’t be tourists and tourist crowds in the city. But Bucharest is not suffocated with the long queues that you often find in other European cities, particularly during the height of the summer season.

Make the most of Bucharest’s vibrant cultural scene. Submerge yourself in the local culture such as theatre, ballet, music, and contemporary art.

And enjoy the large parks and green spaces such as the Cismigiu park, which has an old-world charm and is just a few minutes’ stroll away from the Old Town.

Mexico may be the number one destination for Americans going abroad, hosting tens of millions of tourists every year, but while resort zones along the coast concentrate the majority of tourist arrivals, other lesser-known spots in the hinterland have been largely ignored for years.

This year, this trend has changed.

Now more than ever, U.S. vacationers are keen on exploring different parts of Mexico and experiencing the country beyond their luxurious enclaves, and that’s when this incredibly exciting yet lesser-known colonial city has come into play:

One Of The Last Hidden Gems Of Mexico

Located in North-Central Mexico, a 2-hour drive from equally underrated Aguascalientes, Zacatecas has never been traditionally promoted as a tourist destination on the international stage, even though it is one of Mexico’s most culturally wealthy and historically significant cities.

It’s a remarkably popular cultural destination among Mexican locals themselves, but there’s no denying international tourism in Zacatecas, particularly concerning American visitors, has been severely limited, mostly due to poor promotion.

Now, its potential looks set to be fully unleashed as the local Government turns its focus to tourism, formally identified as one of the main drives behind the city’s economic growth this year, and campaigns to position Zacatecas as a ‘romantic‘ city break.

So what makes it so unique, and what have Americans who restrict their movements to the Yucatan Peninsula, or Mexico City at best, been missing out on all these years?

One Of The Oldest Settlements Of The Americas

Firstly, Zacatecas is one of the oldest European settlements in all of the Americas, and this alone warrants consideration, especially if you’re passionate about Mexican culture.

It was originally founded by the Spanish settlers in the mid-16th century, and like many of its sister cities in Spanish America, it went on to become an important trading hub and a rich mining center due to the area’s abundance of silver and far rarer minerals.

While most of the riches flowed across the Atlantic into mainland Spain, Zacatecas did flourish as an important center of Baroque art upon the rise of a now-defunct empire, housing some of Mexico’s prettiest civic buildings and one of its best-preserved Old Towns.

The Centro Historico in Zacatecas is, in fact, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 in recognition of the city’s 16th and 17th-century landmarks and its colonial townscape, dominated by narrow alleys etched onto steep slopes and a magnificent Spanish cathedral.

Unlike other historical cities of its standing, however, Zacatecas has evolved with the times without sacrificing its past.

A Historic City That’s Evolved With The Times Without Losing Its Essence

Its famous Plaza de Toros, inaugurated in 1866, is now home to the Quinta Real Zacatecas Hotel, while several other historical structures in the center have been repurposed and now either house shops, cultural centers, or other organizations, without defacing the building or changing its facade.

Walking picturesque Downtown Zacatecas, you may have the impression not much has changed since the Spanish conquered Mexico and laid the first stone in the centrally-located Plaza de Armas, yet it only takes a furtive peek beneath the surface to learn this is a creative, youthful city.

Yes, there are beautiful colonial mansions, a Spanish-styled Hidalgo Avenue lined with boutique shops, a historic Central Market, temples, and every other possible feature you would expect a colonial city to have, but it is more than a mere open-air museum.

This is a metropolitan area home to over 1.6 million people, after all, and there is no shortage of nightlife spots, particularly in the Historic Quarter, points of interest further afield, and artsy, modern districts to explore.

Nonstop Flights From The States

Luckily for Americans, Zacatecas is served by its own international airport.

Naturally, as this is a smaller destination, it does not boast the same flight frequency, nor the impressive connectivity Cancun, Cabo, Mexico City, or other far more popular vacation spots do, but it does host flights from Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago O’Hare, Chicago-Midway, Los Angeles, and San Jose (CA).

The process is simple. Enter the country as a tourist, then apply for the card and sign an affidavit confirming you have the financial means to live here.

The best part of all is there is no salary requirement, making it one of the easiest digital nomad visas in the world.
