Sayulita is a small town of 5,000 people, while Puerto Vallarta is a big city of over 220,000 people.
You won’t find sprawling all-inclusive resorts in Sayulita, but rather a selection of boutique accommodations ranging from small luxury hotels to budget-friendly hostels.
Sayulita is known for being one of the best surfing destinations in Mexico, attracting beginner and experienced surfers alike. If you want to take surfing lessons, Sayulita is a great place to do it.
In recent years, Sayulita has also become known as a party destination, and there’s always something going on as new restaurants and bars continue to open. There are also many yoga classes, fitness classes, tours, and other activities happening in Sayulita.
San Pancho, Mexico
If you’re looking for an even smaller and more laid-back beach destination, San Pancho might be the perfect place for you.
This small town is located about fifteen minutes further up the Riviera Nayarit from Sayulita, but it feels much quieter. The town has a population of just 3,000 people, and it has not gotten as crowded as Sayulita yet.
If you want to spend time on the beach or go surfing in San Pancho, you’ll have less competition than you would in Sayulita.
Although there are still plenty of restaurants and bars in San Pancho for how small it is, there is less going on compared to Sayulita. If you’re looking for a place to truly relax and disconnect, then San Pancho might be the better choice for you.
Benefits Of Sayulita And San Pancho
Both Sayulita and San Pancho are very popular with tourists, but they still don’t see as much tourism as nearby Puerto Vallarta.

However, I just completely unplugged for the first time in a long time after spending a few days at the most relaxing resort in Puerto Vallarta, The Westin, which is only a quick five-minute drive from the airport.
Trying To Unwind Can Actually Be Stressful
Have you ever tried to relax? The statement itself is a bit of an oxymoron. Try to relax? Attempting to relax and being unsuccessful can be its own source of stress. Relaxing should be effortless, and at The Westin, it was.
To really understand how rare this experience was for me, I’ve got to let you in on a secret…
I love my job.
No, seriously. I have never been as passionate about anything else in my entire life, and I am so grateful to be able to say that! However, it can be hard to unwind or unplug when you are so invested and interested in something. I don’t really see this as a downside because it’s what I am most passionate about.
Still, regardless of how I feel about it, it’s wise to unplug every now and then for mental health and relaxation. Lucky for me, The Westin didn’t give me a choice! Even if I tried to work (which I did), I was able to relax more than I had in months.

Worry-Free From The Start
I was lucky enough to have the row to myself on the flight in, and things only got easier from there. Getting through customs in Puerto Vallarta is a breeze, and transport from the airport was arranged through The Westin.
When I walked outside, my driver was already waiting for me with a sign that had my name on it. A quick 5-minute drive later, and I was greeted by The Westin’s beautiful lobby and signature White Tea scent. My senses were pleasantly overwhelmed, and I felt like I’d entered another world.
**Author’s Airport Tip**
One quick tip for navigating Puerto Vallarta’s airport — make sure you don’t fall for any of the timeshare people’s tactics in the “shark tank.” People inside the airport will try to convince you that they are your transport, don’t fall for it. Walk all the way outside of the airport, where the actual transport operators will be waiting.
The scale of the building, the perfect weather, and the wonderful immediate service made everything feel surreal. My bags were quickly whisked away to be taken to my room, check-in took all of two minutes, and I was in my room shortly after. I’d only landed just over thirty minutes prior and was already enjoying a cup of afternoon tea while taking in the incredible view from my balcony.

A Dinner That Will Ground You, Literally
As a solo traveler and borderline introvert, getting to know new people can sometimes be challenging. After a long day of flying, my energy levels can make it difficult to put the effort forth to get to know people I’ve never met or even catch up with those that I already know. That all changed during the first evening’s dinner at The Westin.
Our group (who had only met virtually up to this point) met in the lobby before walking through the gorgeous property to our dinner location. The Westin sits on what used to be a palm tree farm, and great effort was taken to preserve the trees. Even the pools were built around existing trees. The whole resort feels cozy — as if you’re closed off from the entire world, so the walk already made the evening feel special.

When we reached our dinner spot, the ambiance really kicked in. We had booked a ‘sunset picnic’ right on the lawn overlooking the beach, and I instantly knew it was going to be a great night. Getting down closer to the ground gave the entire experience a much more intimate feel.
Smiles were plenty, and conversation was easy. This was definitely the best way to get to know people, and would be perfect for families and friends to enjoy together and catch up. The string lights over the table lit up as the sun went down, and fireworks started a short way down the beach, adding a whole other element to the evening as we enjoyed our desserts. As the night came to a close, I knew I’d made some good friends that I would keep beyond the trip.
After wrapping up dinner, I went back to my room to end the night in the most comfortable hotel bed I’ve ever been in. (I later found out that The Westin has their own signature Heavenly® Beds, no wonder I slept so well!) When I go back to The Westin (and I will be going back), I will absolutely be booking a sunset picnic again.

Sometimes The Best Way To Relax Is With Intentional Stress
I am the kind of person who finds it challenging to sit still. Lounging on a beach all day is hard for me, and I find it much more enjoyable to go hiking, snorkeling, or, in this trip’s case, ziplining. As a person with a healthy fear of heights, I can confidently say that my stress levels were raised!
After about a 20-minute scenic ride, we arrived at Canopy River, where we ziplined across the mountains 11 times before taking a donkey ride back to the top. If you find yourself here, make sure to check out Jorullo Bridge after your ziplining tour. It’s the longest suspension bridge in the world, and offers some great views!
The tallest zipline was 500ft in the air and 1500ft long! Certainly enough to kick up my cortisol levels, but it was a blast! After the initial fear wore off, the views offered while suspended between two mountains were almost therapeutic. The rest of my day felt so calm after starting it off with such a rush. In fact, I spent several hours lounging next to the pool, reading a book. Something I usually wouldn’t be able to do for very long.
The Most Relaxing Day Of 2022
It’s been a busy year for me, and life has changed drastically since the start of 2022. I set many goals for myself, and I’ve basically worked nonstop to meet them. In the midst of that, it’s been difficult to allow myself to relax. However, during my third day at The Westin, I reached a level of tranquility I hadn’t achieved in ages.
This will likely come as a surprise to no one, but my most relaxing day of 2022 began with a trip to The Westin Spa. I am not exaggerating in the slightest when I say it was the best massage of my life. Before beginning, I was asked if I had any areas that needed special attention, and I definitely did. My neck has been stiff for months, and I’ve been too busy with life to really do anything about it. My therapist nodded and said they would take care of it, and they did! For the first time in months, I could bend my neck completely without any pain.
After the massage, I spent another hour taking advantage of the steam room, sauna, and sleep room, where I was able to fall asleep for about 30 minutes. When I finally decided to leave (and it took some convincing!), I felt like I was floating. Not many things can get me to completely unwind, but The Westin Spa (thankfully) gave me no choice.
Tips For A Relaxing Time In Downtown Puerto Vallarta
While I can’t recommend The Westin enough, it’s worth getting off the property to explore some of the surrounding areas. Staying at The Westin makes this very easy. To check out the immediate area, I’d recommend renting a Move Well bike from the front desk. The roads and sidewalks around the resort are all very bike friendly, and it’s the perfect way to wake yourself back up after a life-changing massage.
For a more unique experience, I highly recommend checking out downtown Puerto Vallarta, particularly the Malecón, a 12-block boardwalk along the ocean. One of the coolest parts about downtown is that every street is historic, as they have all retained their original cobblestone structure.
After the sun goes down, I suggest taking an after-dark taco tour with Vallarta Food Tours. My new favorite way to take in a new place is via food tours, and this was one of my favorite parts of the trip. Just like the food tour I recently took in Old San Juan, it was a history lesson in disguise, and I felt like I knew the city on a much deeper level afterward. Plus, as a solo traveler, food tours are a fantastic way to see more of the city with a group to meet new people and make friends!
Going with a group, and especially with a guide, is one of the most relaxing ways to take in a new place. You are with someone who knows the area really well, and you don’t have to worry about checking your phone every few seconds to make sure you are going in the right direction. Plus, walking around at night alone can be uncomfortable. Taking a food tour with a group is a great way to see the city at night when it is most alive without going it alone.
This was one of the best trips — and certainly the most relaxing — that I have ever taken. Since the airport was only 5 minutes away and the hotel could arrange transport, I had zero worry about making it to the airport on time. I still feel refreshed, and I’ve been home for a week! I went to Puerto Vallarta not knowing what to expect, and, as usual, life surprised me. I left with a refreshed mind and body, wonderful new friends, and an appreciation for fully unplugging every once in a while.
One thing is certain. I can’t wait to go back.

A Sunshine-Inspired Lightshow
Located in the San Juan metro region, Puerto Rico’s massive new entertainment complex DISTRITO T-Mobile will be putting on a unique light show inspired by the Pantone color using its 14,000 feet of LED screens, including America’s largest 4K horizontal LED screen.
Senor Paleta is a specialty store in Old San Juan known for creamy and fruity frozen desserts on a stick, otherwise known as Paletas. The artisanal shop has created a Puerto Rico Sunshine-inspired paleta with papaya and pineapple flavors. Make sure you take your paleta to-go so you can enjoy it during the sunset over San Juan Bay.
Stunning Beaches
You’ll be spoiled for choice with Puerto Rico’s many glorious beaches as you wait for its orange-hue sun to disappear at the end of the day. Playa Pastillo is known for its turquoise waters and its cave, Cuevas de Las Golondrinas, which is only accessible during the summer months. During winter, you can take a casual beach walk to view it. If you want something for the whole family, Sun Bay beach offers all the amenities you need, while an off-the-beaten-path option is Zoni Beach which has fewer crowds and offers natural caves and sea grapevines.

The Highest Peak

With over 140 categories, it is one of the largest award shows in the travel industry and one of the most relevant, with sponsorship from big companies like Allianz Partners, Air Canada, and Enterprise Holders. Seeing that Mexico is America’s favorite sunny getaway, it has its own sub-categories under the ‘Best Destinations’ listings.
When it comes to the best in Mexico, Cabo came out triumphant with a ‘Gold’ medal, followed by Puerto Vallarta (Silver) and Cancun (Bronze). Once again, it trumps all other coastal hubs and openly challenges Cancun for the top spot domestically – so why is Cabo being showered with so much love when it lags behind*the Caribbean in numbers, one may wonder?
Cabo Is Cancun’s Biggest Threat Internally
*First of all, does it?
Cancun Airport’s arrival figures may be poised to be Mexico’s highest during the peak season, but it pales in comparison to Cabo in terms of recovery. Effectively, Cancun had accumulated a lower 14.6 percent growth in 2022 by late September; at the same time, the dual ‘Los Cabos’ hit the 17.9 percent mark.
Cancun is a tour de force almost impossible to be surpassed, but should this trend continue, the Capes will keep increasing their chances of toppling the Mayan giant. In simpler terms, more and more tourists are falling in love with Cabo, and this newfound fame is attributed both to a laudable tourism campaign and the region’s remarkably low crime levels.
At a time when state governments deploy army officials and even the Navy to reinforce security along Mexico’s easternmost coast in response to gang activity and the occasional shooting, Cabo authorities have averted most of the bad press plaguing Cancun and Tulum by being firm and keeping the streets safe. In Mexico, Los Cabos – both San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas – are the safest to live and/or visit in the short term, as concluded in an INEGI report (the acronym stands for National Institute of Statistics and Geography). Masses of sargassum seaweed have been invading popular and touristic Caribbean destinations—from Puerto Rico to Barbados— for months, ruining travelers’ vacations and worrying local authorities about economic and environmental consequences.
“This year has been the worst year on record,” said the researcher and faculty member with Florida Sea Grant Lisa Krimsky as reported by the news agency Associated Press (AP).
Krimsky, also Water Resource Regional Specialized Agent based in southeast Florida added: “It is absolutely devastating for the region.”
Over 18.8 million tons in May and over 24 million tons of these brown algae spread across the Atlantic Ocean this year and during July authorities informed that the sargassum keeps arriving non-stop and numbers have not decreased.
This year’s numbers have been considered by the University of South Florida’s Optical Oceanography Lab as “a new historical record” in a report recently published.
Oceanography professor Chuanmin Hu said that according to the data analyzed, the previous record was noted in May 2018 and this year the sargassum levels were higher by 20%. The professor confessed his reaction: “I was scared.”
Over 800 tons of sargassum were collected in June only from Cancun beaches. The different authorities in the Caribbean have been dealing with this problem by applying different strategies to protect local nature and prevent tourism chaos.
What Travelers Should Know About Sargassum
The large brown seaweed is considered harmless to humans but gives off an unpleasant smell —similar to rotten eggs— when it decomposes, covers beautiful sands and pristine waters, and can affect the local ecosystem.
Some people have reported rashes and blisters after being in contact with this seaweed. According to Florida Health’s report, this is caused by sea creatures that live within this algae. So, it’s better to avoid contact with it.
The sargassum creates island-like masses in the ocean that help animals migrate and has an important role in our ecosystem, but it gives off hydrogen sulfide that can irritate the eyes, throat, and nose. Travelers with asthma or other breathing illnesses might be more affected or could have trouble breathing after being exposed to it.
These are general recommendations when visiting a beach with sargassum:
Avoid touching it.
Use gloves if you have to handle it.
Close doors and windows if you are staying near beaches or coasts with sargassum.
Avoid the beach or staying for too long if you have asthma or respiratory problems.
Do not cook it or eat it. It is not edible, it can contain metals like arsenic and cadmium.
Another strategy for travelers is to plan their Caribbean vacations during times when they can avoid these algae or consider locations where it doesn’t usually sit.
The best times to visit the Caribbean are between November and March, sargassum’s peak season is usually between May and September.
Top Destinations Dealing With Sargassum
Cancun authorities have assigned local workers to collect sargassum away from there to beaches. Travelers have opted for beaches and locations that do not have these algae like Isla Mujeres or visit spectacular Cenotes around the Quintana Roo state.
In Puerto Rico, local authorities worry about sargassum because they believe that it can affect one of the hottest spots on the island, the bioluminescent bay Fajardo. Tourism kayak companies and the government are studying the sargassum and working on solutions while cleaning it from their coasts.
In Costa Rica, authorities assigned a team to take care of the algae and protect the nesting process of sea turtles. The government also worries about the offshore industry and has been working in collaboration with other nations.
International organizations, including the United Nations, are studying the sargassum, trying to understand why it keeps growing, and working on the best solutions.
Also, different local companies are turning sargassum into new products —from gas to cosmetic products to vegan leather— to use its excess and turn it into innovative solutions.

Great news for those who enjoy taking a break from the Canadian winter! The Canadian low-cost carrier Flair Airlines recently announced two new routes to the popular Mexican coastal city Puerto Vallarta. Services will begin in winter 2022.
The company wants to offer Canadian travelers the possibility to experience the warm weather and sandy beaches of Puerto Vallarta by the end of the year, just like the American low-cost carrier JetBlue is doing at the moment.
According to the information shared in a press release, Flair Airlines will allow more Canadian travelers to escape winter and enjoy this sunny destination with affordable tickets. Non-stop flights will connect Edmonton and Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR).
Flair Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Jones said: “We’re here to offer affordable options to Canadians, and growing our network in Mexico is an exciting step forward as we continue our international expansion.”
Jones also mentioned weather conditions: “We are looking forward to partnering with Puerto Vallarta International Airport to bring another sunny destination to our passengers. We know it will be a hot destination this winter, with temperatures averaging 30 degrees in November.”
The new services will begin on November 3 from Edmonton and November 5 from Vancouver. One-way fares will start at $99.
The company wants to position itself as Canada’s main ultra-low-cost carrier and is also currently offering travelers a special promo—until May 5— with domestic flights for $39 per service.
More Affordable Vacation Options For Canadian Travelers
Canadian families will have more affordable options to fly to Mexico. Now, along with other low-cost Canadian carriers such as Swoop—also offering flights to the Dominican Republic— Flair will be offering passengers the possibility to explore popular and exotic destinations at prices surprisingly low.
Starting in November, from Edmonton and Vancouver, Canadians can take direct flights into paradise with Flair Airlines. Myron Keehn, Vice President Air Service, Business Development, ESG and Government Relations, Edmonton International Airport, said: “Flair is bringing the fun with another non-stop Mexican destination from Edmonton International Airport.”
Keehn also added: “Puerto Vallarta and its beautiful beaches are a popular destination from Edmonton with plenty of ways to relax and enjoy a great vacation. We’re glad to have Flair headquartered at EIA and helping bring more options for low-cost travel to our communities.”
The new non-stop flights to Puerto Vallarta will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays, twice a week from Edmonton and prices start at $109. From Vancouver, the carrier announced weekly flights on Saturdays and one-way fares begin at $99.
Canadians will be able to enjoy one of the most beautiful Mexican cities in the Pacific for just about $200 round trip. They can explore the traditional villages, swim in the warm crystal clear waters of beaches like Playa Los Muertos or Playa de Oro, and have exciting adventures diving or water skiing.
Flair Airlines’ Expansion
The Canadian airline, headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, currently operates in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Flair Airlines was launched in 2017 and, according to data provided by FlightConnections they currently serve direct flights to over 50 destinations.
In Canada, the carrier’s top destinations are Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Halifax, Ottawa, and Victoria, but also serves other cities like Montreal, Abbotsford, Waterloo, Kelowna, Victoria, and Grand Prairie.
Flair Airlines states on its website its intention “to disrupt the monopolistic practices of Canadian airlines” and has been rapidly expanding to fulfill its mission: “We will liberate the lives of Canadians by providing affordable air travel that connects them to the people and experiences they love.”

From the sandy beaches of the world-famous Riviera Maya to its picturesque Pacific Coast, Mexico has been grappling with an increase in violence lately. Although Cancun suffered the brunt of it, and in the midst of a long-awaited tourist season, it is now Puerto Vallarta that has woken up to the news the U.S. has issued a security alert for the city.
Much like its rivals on the Caribbean coast, Puerto Vallarta is a massively popular destination among Americans. A well-developed city with an unparalleled cultural offer, it famously features some of Mexico’s most famous beaches, including Playa de Los Muertos, plus numerous resorts and tourist complexes that rarely see the odd quiet month.
While Puerto Vallarta had managed, so far, to dodge the level of scrutiny Cancun has been under, this may not be the case anymore as more incidents make the headlines:
Confrontation Between Police And Local Gangs Increases In Puerto Vallarta
Following a recent shooting near the Marina Vallarta resort stretch, resulting from a clash between local police and criminal groups, as well as reports of abduction, the U.S. Mission to Mexico was quick to assert safety levels in the region were compromised, mainly as a result of the ‘increased presence of Mexican security forces‘.
While it is easy to think increased security would, in fact, mean the opposite, the U.S. mentions ‘the potential for confrontations between criminal groups and security forces in the Puerto Vallarta area and in the Guadalajara metropolitan area’. Although criminals rarely target tourists, they could still be in danger of getting caught in the crossfire.
As authorities warn, shootings can occur in public places and bystanders risk being injured even when not directly engaged in the conflict. Despite reminding Americans of this gloomy prospect, the U.S. does not mention any particular event as the reason behind the alert, which also encompasses other tourist hotspots in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit.
When vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, Americans are advised to:
Follow local news for security updates
Be aware of their surroundings
Review personal security plans
Call 911 during an emergency
They should also ‘reconsider travel’ to the whole state of Jalisco due to ‘crime and kidnapping’. Sadly, Jalisco is not the only destination Americans are now discouraged to visit: Baja California, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, the State of Mexico, which comprises Mexico City, Morelos, and Zacatecas are among other regions listed.
How Actually Dangerous Is Puerto Vallarta Right Now?
Even though crime has increased, it is far from being rampant and U.S. authorities seem aware of that. Unlike the states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas, Jalisco has not been placed under a ‘no-travel list’, and there seems to be only a moderate to low exposure to violence in the area.

That is not to say security alerts should be ignored, especially when issued by security experts.
