There are certain places that check all the boxes for the typical American traveler — and as an American myself, I can really tell when a place puts effort into making sure they set themselves apart to make us feel right at home.

Most recently, I had a fantastic stay at the Live Aqua Beach Resort Punta Cana all-inclusive in the Dominican Republic, where I was blown away by how perfect it was, especially for Americans.

What Do Americans Look For On Vacation?

This question has an easy answer…

    Easy

While not every American traveler wants to sit on the beach and sip on cocktails all day, many of us are looking for an escape from our day-to-day life. As such, we are looking for one thing above all else — we want everything to be easy.

The average American only gets 11 days of paid vacation per year. And while we could write a whole post on that fact alone, it is what it is.

As a result, most Americans don’t want to have to spend their days off worrying about where to eat, how much they are spending, how to find what they need, or anything else.

Easy, simple, fast, comfortable and convenient. That’s what most Americans are looking for on vacation, and the Live Aqua Beach Resort Punta Cana makes sure to provide it.

Here are 5 reasons why the Live Aqua Punta Cana all-inclusive is perfect for American travelers:

    Everything Is Easy

This cannot be overstated. Staying at the Live Aqua Punta Cana made me realize just how much I want to live on a resort for the rest of my life ????. They made everything so incredibly easy I felt like I didn’t even have to think about doing anything for myself.

From the moment you check in until the moment you leave, your every need is catered to. In fact, you’ll may grow accustomed to their amazing service even before you land.

I had flight issues on the day I traveled down and ended up having to change my flight to land in Santo Domingo rather than Punta Cana. I could have pushed the flight back another day and stayed in Charlotte for the night, but I had plans I really did not want to miss the next day and was happy to pay the difference if needed.

99% of travelers will fly into the Punta Cana International Airport, and roundtrip airport transportation is included in their stay with Live Aqua.

As a result of my flight issues, I had to change my ground transport at the last minute, and the concierge was more than accommodating in making this happen. I never felt worried it wouldn’t be sorted out by the time I landed, and I was right not to.

Though my time on the road was much longer (and later) than I had anticipated, I landed in Santo Domingo and was quickly whisked away to the Live Aqua.

When I finally reached the resort, it was a bit after midnight. I wondered how check-in would go since it was so late, and it was a breeze! I was checked in within a minute or so, and the concierge took my bags, loaded them onto a golf cart, and drove me right to my room.

    @traveloffpath

Check in at Live Aqua Punta Cana is a breeze!

    ♬ Lazy Weekend

This level of service was already impressive and very welcomed after such a long travel day. When I got to my room, I scanned in with my new Live Aqua bracelet (another feature that makes staying there so easy) and got some much-needed rest in an ultra-comfy bed.

Here are some highlights of why everything is so easy at Live Aqua:

    • Resort Bracelet: No need to worry about forgetting your key while at the Live Aqua Punta Cana. When you check in, you’ll get a bracelet (don’t worry, it’s really comfy) that acts as your room key.
    • Personal Butler on WhatsApp: If you stay in a suite or book at club level, you’ll have constant access to your own butler via WhatsApp. This comes in handy when you have any requests at all, such as restocking the mini-fridge or bringing extra water bottles.
    • Food Is Always a Few Steps Away: There are so many food options, which are outlined more below, and you can always order room service too! In fact, when I arrived after midnight, the concierge made sure to ask if I was hungry after my long travel day. Anytime you are hungry, there will be food around.
    • Check-In/Out: I touched on this above, but checking into the Live Aqua Punta Cana was the easiest process ever, and checking out was exactly the same, which was great as I was rushing to make sure I made my flight out.

Endless Food Options With Good Portions

Americans are used to, quite frankly, portions that are more than necessary. For better or worse, most meals ordered out while in the States could easily be turned into 2, and this is what we are used to.

When traveling in certain areas of the world, I always have to remind myself not to expect the same thing abroad.

However, the Live Aqua Punta Cana makes you feel right at home with their portion sizes, and it doesn’t matter which restaurant you visit. And speaking of restaurants, you will never get bored of the variety. The Live Aqua boasts so many different places to eat and grab drinks it might even be hard to try them all!

    @traveloffpath

Soooooo many options for food with Live Aqua Punta Cana!

    ♬ Food!

Best of all, there is no need to make a reservation!

Many all-inclusives may have fine dining included as part of the stay, but you are often limited to certain nights, and you have to reserve your dinner in advance.

At Live Aqua, this is completely unnecessary. Want some fine-dining Italian food on a whim? Not a problem!

Places you can eat and drink include:

    1. Liberi: This is the go-to spot when you want a bit of everything. A buffet-style restaurant that is great for breakfast or any other times you just want to stop in and eat right away.
    2. Seishin: This is the perfect spot for people who love Asian fusion.
    3. Cool Fever: This is the resort’s coffee shop, perfect for a quick pick me up after a morning walk on the beach.
    4. Sospiro: This restaurant offers a feast of traditional Italian cuisine and was one of my favorites. I’m a sucker for Italian food, and this did not disappoint.
    5. Compton St: This is a cool little sports bar offering quick bites and tasty drinks. It’s also a great place to play a round of pool.
    6. Chez Rose: This is the perfect place for a more formal dinner and the French cuisine here is to die for. Highly recommend visiting at least once!
    7. Miraflores: Get your Instagram ready, this casual spot is right on the beach and is the perfect place for a lunch with gorgeous views and a refreshing ocean breeze.

    1. ATL: Who doesn’t love Mexican food? Live Aqua is a Mexican-based brand, so they know what they are doing in ATL. Trust me, you’ll want to stop in.
    2. Wonderpool: This is an outdoor casual area in the middle of all of the pools where you can take in the beautiful gardens a scenery with a tasty drink in hand.
    3. Moonada: This rooftop bar overlooks the entire property as well as the beach and is a great spot to enjoy music and cocktails.
    4. Huzur: A covered outdoor Mediterranean restaurant that overlooks one of the prettiest beaches in the Dominican Republic… what’s not to love?
    5. The Strainer (aka the Lobby Bar): Don’t discount the lobby, it’s one of the prettiest parts of the resort! It’s also a great place to grab drinks and socialize while waiting for transportation before heading off on any day trips.

    Constant Comfort

Are you sensing a theme here? Prepare for everything to be easy. Prepare to be constantly pampered. Prepare to have the most relaxing vacation you’ve ever had.

Live Aqua Punta Cana is one of the most relaxing places I have ever been, and I was beyond comfortable the entire time I was there.

Live Aqua punta cana entrance with rubber duckies

The second you walk in, you are met with Live Aqua’s signature rubber duckies as well as their signature scent that immediately lets you know it is time to kick back and enjoy yourself.

I don’t know what the blend is, but if I had it at home, I don’t think I would ever get any work done ????.

My room was a den of comfort, and I still find myself daydreaming about the day bed right next to my own entrance to the swim-up pool just outside my room.

    @traveloffpath

Nothing quite beats that swim-up suite feeling! Live Aqua Punta Cana totally delivers.

    ♬ Cozy

If you get the chance to book a swim-up suite or room, do it! It is so nice to be able to wake up and have a coffee in the inviting water just steps away from your bed while the sun comes up. After this trip, I’m totally sold on swim-up rooms and find myself looking for them whenever I travel.

But the comfort doesn’t stop in the room. All over the resort, you will find cozy spaces to dig into a bit of relaxation time. From the cabanas by the pool and beach to the inviting sofas in the lobby, you’ll not find an inch of the Live Aqua that doesn’t scream (or whisper, perhaps) relaaaxxx ????.

And if the constant comfort surrounding you isn’t enough to fill your cup, then head to the Feel Harmony Spa! Enjoy the different water rituals before heading to the sauna, or reverse order if you like. Just be sure to book the best massage you’ve had in ages before leaving!

I tried the deep tissue massage and felt like a new person when it was over. Seriously, the flight back to Punta Cana would be worth it just for another massage. Working entirely remotely means hours and hours on the computer, and I’m not the best at making sure I’m conscious of my posture.

As a result, my neck is pretty much always sore. After my deep tissue massage, I was able to move my head around pain-free for the first time in a long time!

    Fast Service

I’ve lived in the Caribbean before for a time, and to spare specific islands any negativity, I’ll refrain from naming where. But one thing that can ring true in many areas is island time. And usually, this is a welcome experience after the constant go go go of the U.S.

However, waiting too long for food or drinks can get old for anyone if it takes too long, but most Americans (including myself) are used to very quick service.

Waiting more than a few minutes for a drink feels unnatural unless you live somewhere long enough to get used to it.

Luckily this was no issue at Live Aqua. Not only do they make sure to give the best service possible, but they also make sure it is quick. Whether it’s food, drinks, a request from your butler, or anything else, it’s unlikely that you’ll be waiting for long.

    Constant Entertainment

America is known for constant entertainment, and as a result, we as Americans are always looking for the next thing to do, watch, or explore. I can only sit on the beach and read a book for so long before I feel like I need to move on to the next adventure.

I had no issue finding things to do at the Live Aqua, and I definitely plan to go back to explore some more. Not only does the resort itself have constant entertainment lined up for guests, but there are many fun day trips that are easy to set up right at the resort.

If you are headed to Punta Cana, I would highly recommend visiting the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve with Tropical Incentives. On your way there, your guide will give you information about Punta Cana, and the history of the area is very interesting in and of itself.

    @traveloffpath

No better place to explore than the Dominican Republic

    ♬ Nature Love

Once on the reserve, you’ll be able to spot beautiful tropical birds, turtles, and more as you make your way through the reserve on your way to explore several cenotes. The water is clear as can be and super refreshing on a hot day.

Typically, I’d say the cenotes are a perfect way to get away from sargassum-covered beaches, but you don’t even have to worry about that at the Live Aqua, as they have sargassum barriers in place to keep their beaches pristine.

Sargassum Barriers at Live Aqua Punta Cana

While at the resort, you can join in on the fun by checking out some of the shows they have at night or getting a workout in at one of the super-fun group fitness classes. There is always something going on, whether it be a fun group workout, bumping music, games, or a show.

The resort makes it easy to know what is going on as they give you the schedule when you check in, and they also post it on a giant board on your way to Liberi.

    Summing Up

Punta Cana is an absolutely gorgeous slice of the Caribbean, and you would be doing yourself a disservice by staying in anything less than the best while there. Live Aqua is certainly among the best and is the perfect place for Americans (and everyone else) to unwind and enjoy all that Punta Cana has to offer.

Top 3 Places To Visit In The Dominican Republic Other Than Punta Cana

The Dominican Republic has long been a favorite among American travelers, and this year is no exception. The country’s diverse cultures and rich history, coupled with its stunning natural beauty and prime location in the Caribbean, all combine to make it a top destination for anyone looking for sun and sea.

Aerial veiw of man on a beach in dominican republic

Out of the 8.5 million who visited last year alone, most flock to Punta Cana, and for good reason. Yes, Punta Cana is indisputably beautiful, and its location at the crossing point between the Caribbean and the Atlantic brings with it some truly postcard-esque beaches. While Punta Cana’s beauty is a major selling point for tourists choosing to come to the Dominican Republic, there is so much more to the island to explore.

Here are 3 top places to visit in the Dominican Republic, other than Punta Cana:

    samana national park republic

    Cabarete

If it’s action you are seeking, Cabarete is the place for you. This smaller beachside town is located about an hour from the popular Puerto Plata, a common starting point for visitors arriving from both cruise ships and international flights. Cabarete beach is technically a bay, and the waters are kept calm due to a coral reef protecting them from the open ocean.

Calm as they might seem, Cabarete is notoriously breezy, helping it to secure its spot as one of the most famous water sports hotspots in Latin America. The beaches here are world-famous for kiteboarding and windsurfing.

saina island blue sea dominican republic

Cabarete has a surf town vibe, yet not one that has been overtaken by foreigners completely. The locals here are colorful and eclectic, and everyone lives alongside each other with little problems.

The nightlife in Cabarete is also quite notorious, and you can dance the night away at the many beachside bars.

    Bahia de Las Aguilas

Those who are adventurous enough to venture to the Dominican Republic’s wild and undeveloped west coast will be rewarded with Bahia de Las Aguilas. Widely considered amongst the Dominicans as the most beautiful beach in the country, Bahia de Las Aguilas is part of the Jaragua National Park. This natural paradise has kept commercialization at bay, and nature is preserved by not allowing hotels, shops, or restaurants.

The beach here is fine white sand and reaches almost five miles. To reach Bahia de Las Aguilas, you must come by boat or 4×4 vehicle, and once you have arrived, you can enjoy a unique ecosystem and spot various endangered species. This largest protected natural area in the Caribbean is definitely worth a visit, if not solely for the adventure of reaching it.

    beach in domincan republic

    Las Terrenas

This former unknown fishing village has enjoyed a tourism boom in recent years, with many choosing to explore this northern area of the island. The numerous beaches here range from completely natural to a bit rugged, with not one major hotel to be found. Beaches such as Playa Bonita or Playa Coson are favorites among the locals and tourists, and most of the area’s coastline needs to be accessed by ATV.

You will not have to fight anyone for space on the beach nor pay for access anywhere. There is also no shortage of beach bars and seafood houses to enjoy. Las Terrenas is also famous for its surreal crystal-clear waters and powder white sand. If you are looking for a natural coastline unspoiled by massive resorts yet still with a town full of amenities, then Las Terrenas is your kind of place.

    beach in Dominican republic

    Bonus:

Looking for a cool spot to check out away from the beach? Just outside the vibrant capital city of Santo Domingo, you can find Los Tres Ojos (Three Eyes) National Park. This open-air limestone cave system with a series of crystal clear lakes looks something like a Mexican cenote. To visit, you can take a taxi or local bus, and costing less than 5 USD to enter. This place is a bargain.

Movies such as Jurassic Park 3 and Tarzan have shot scenes here, and you can see why. An easy afternoon away from the city, Tres Ojos will provide the backdrop for some stunning vacation snaps.

Cancun Vs. Punta Cana: Which Is The Best All Inclusive Destination?

There’s no question that Cancun and Punta Cana are two of the most popular destinations for an all-inclusive vacation. Cancun is the most visited Destinations in Mexico, while Punta Cana is the most visited destination in the Dominican Republic. Each location offers visitors a wide selection of all-inclusive properties at prices that range from ultra-luxurious to totally affordable. Both destinations have been breaking records this summer, proving that tourists are flocking to the regions. For those who are on the fence about which area to choose, this article will help determine a winner!

Cancun hotel zone with paraglider in the foreground

Travel Off Path has pitted each location against each other in a head-to-head comparison to determine the best all-inclusive destination. For clarity, we’ve broken things down into sections, including pricing and resort options, beaches, weather, activities, safety, as well as flight connectivity and cost, and traveler interest.

For this comparison, we assumed a one-week vacation during January, a peak travel month for both areas. Specifically, we chose January 14th to January 21st, with flights in and out on each of those days as well. All prices shown are based on two people traveling together.

    All Inclusive Costs & Options

One of the driving decision-making factors for vacations is cost, so it’s worth exploring how Cancun and Punta Cana rank against each other. To make the comparison of properties relevant to more than just luxury travelers, we will explore two categories; 4-star properties & 5-star properties. Average costs were found using booking.com and the dates of January 14th through January 21st.

Only all-inclusive properties were considered, and pricing data was pulled on September 5th. We combed through all available properties to get an average cost of each category, and the results are below:

    Pricing: Who Wins?

Based on average prices alone, Punta Cana has the upper hand in this category.

In total, Cancun has 74 all inclusive properties to choose from, while Punta Cana has 72. Cancun has more 4-star options than Punta Cana, implying more affordability. However, on average, Cancun’s 4-star properties are over $30 more per night than Punta Cana. Similarly, Cancun’s 5-star properties are, on average, about $80 more per night than Punta Cana. This isn’t to say that Cancun has no affordable options, though.

For instance, the 4-star Hotel Dos Playas Faranda Cancún is just $200 per night for the dates explored. The cheapest option for a 4-star stay in Punta Cana, the whala!bávaro, comes out a little more affordable at $187 per night. It should also be noted that, on average, Cancun’s 4-star and 5-star properties have slightly higher user ratings.

    Beaches

What’s a tropical vacation without a beautiful beach? That first step onto that white-sand Caribbean beach is almost worth the cost of the flight alone. When choosing between Cancun or Punta Cana, it’s important to know which has beaches better suited to your travel style. We’ll break down the top 5 beaches for each destination and their differences. Beach rankings were found using Tripadvisor.

    Biggest Differences

The single biggest difference between beach days in Cancun vs. Punta Cana is the level of development. In Cancun, the long stretch of sand in the hotel zone is jam-packed with restaurants, shops, hotels, and endless activities for tourists to take advantage of.

Conversely, Punta Cana’s beaches are less developed and offer a more authentic tropical beach vibe. While hotels certainly dot the shores, it’s much easier to find a secluded stretch of sand to soak up the sun.

    Beaches: Who Wins?

When it comes to beaches, there’s no specific metric that can decide whether Cancun or Punta Cana is the ultimate winner. However, it can certainly be an influencing factor when deciding which destination is for you.

If you prefer your beach days to be close to a seemingly endless array of activities, Cancun may be for you. The tradeoff is that the beaches will be much more busy and crowded. But if that’s your vibe, then Cancun is perfect!

Punta Cana will be a better place for travelers who like to carve out their own space at the beach. However, the price you’ll pay for fewer crowds and seclusion will be less access to amenities. That’s certainly not to say there aren’t activities and restaurants to try, simply that they are not as condensed into one area as they are in Cancun.

    Weather

The gorgeous weather offered by both Cancun and Punta Cana is one of the many reasons travelers flock to these areas over the fall and winter. A week of sunshine and warm weather is a wonderful way to break up the winter into more manageable sections. January is the dry season for both locations, and rain doesn’t tend to stick around. For days that it does rain, it often storms for a short period and quickly goes back to beautiful sunshine.

Below, we have laid out average temperatures and other information for the month of January in each destination.

    Cancun

    • Temperature:

    • Average Humidity: 76%
    • Average Water Temperature: 80°F (27°C)

    Weather: Who Wins?

Cancun and Punta Cana have such similar averages in January that it is difficult to determine an ultimate winner in this category. Both destinations will offer a welcome respite from the cold of winter. However, for those who don’t like it too hot, Cancun may be better on average due to the lower humidity levels and slightly lower average temperatures.

    Activities

Cancun and Punta Cana offer a wide range of activities to enjoy during your stay. The most significant difference in offerings is the style of activities available. While there are many overlaps, such as snorkeling, watersports, and swimming in cenotes, each destination has its own feel and unique offerings for travelers to enjoy.

    Cancun Activities

Cancun’s hotel zone is like a giant 15-mile-long playground. It is the heart of tourism in Mexico and is designed to offer endless entertainment to those visiting its shores. Nightclubs, restaurants, shopping malls, beach clubs, and more are all just a quick taxi ride or walk away when you stay in the hotel zone. An extensive list of every activity available would require several pages, so we’ve listed a few of note below:

    • Xoximilco Cancun – A self-named “Floating Fiesta” awaits visitors heading to Xoximilco. Guests board colorfully decorated gondolas with an open bar and a three-course meal. As you venture through the park’s canals, you will see many different bands and shows. This is just one of Cancun’s many dinner shows, but it certainly sets itself apart from the rest!
    • Nightlife – Cancun’s nightlife is incredible, and there are some wildly popular places to go. Coco Bongo is a must and is arguably Cancun’s most famous nightclub. With live performances, balloons, confetti, bubbles, full stage lighting, incredible music, and much more, guests will enjoy the party of a lifetime.
    • Day Trips Galore – Not only is Cancun itself packed with things to do, but it also has easy access to some pretty incredible day trips. From Cenotes to ancient ruins, many adventures await. Tulum is one of the most popular day trips, allowing visitors to visit an ancient Mayan archaeological site.

    Punta Cana Activities

Punta Cana is an excellent place for travelers who appreciate the outdoors and have an adventurous spirit. While it also has nightlife options, there aren’t nearly as many as Cancun. For an adventurous day off the resort, travelers can ride ATVs through the interior forests, zipline through the trees, swim in a cenote, or ride a horse on the beach at sunset. Here are a few activities of note in Punta Cana below:

    Saona Island Dominican Republic
    • Scape Park – This 247-acre park is a great way to take part in a host of outdoor activities all in one place. Swim in underground caves, zipline along a cliff, go caving, snorkel at Bucaneros reef, or float around in the turquoise waters of Hoyo Azul, a hidden cenote.
    • Visit Saona Island – Saona Island lies off the southern coast of the Dominican Republic and is a nature reserve free from major development. If you want to feel like you are walking along the beach in an untouched tropical paradise, this is where to do it. Day trips include a boat ride to the island, often with an open bar and a buffet lunch.
    • Unique Night Life – While Punta Cana may not have as many options as Cancun when it comes to nightlife, it certainly has some unique ones. One of the most interesting has to be Imagine Cave Disco. Built right into natural caves, this nightclub sets the tone for what is sure to be a memorable night.

    Activities: Who Wins?

If we base the winner purely on the number of activities offered, then Cancun is a clear winner. However, every traveler has their own unique tastes when they visit a new place. For travelers looking to spend more time outdoors adventuring, Punta Cana may be the way to go. Cancun is the way to go for travelers seeking a destination that feels much more urban and is teeming with endless things to do.

    Safety

All inclusive properties in Cancun and Punta Cana are considered safe destinations. When venturing away from the resorts however, visitors should exercise increased caution. The most common crime affecting tourists in both destinations is petty theft. Criminals assume that tourists have a lot of money, smartphones, jewelry, and other valuables.

The U.S State Department classifies The Dominican Republic and the Quintana Roo State (where Cancun resides) as Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. Advice from the state department for Level 2 areas includes:

    • Stay aware of surroundings
    • Do not resist a robbery
    • Don’t display signs of wealth
    • Follow local advice of resort or tour guides for safety

Both countries should be safe for travelers who stick to well-known tourist areas and activities. However, by the numbers, Cancun comes out ahead for safety. Mexico has a crime rate of 54.19 while the Dominican Republic has a crime rate of 61.02. This means that per every 100,000 people, 61 of them are subject to a crime in the Dominican Republic while 54 are subject to a crime in Mexico.

    Flights: Who Wins?

Cancun is the winner when it comes to both flight connectivity and flight prices. While flights to Punta Cana aren’t overwhelmingly more expensive, Cancun consistently has lower prices. Also, Cancun has double the number of direct flights to both the U.S. and Canada. Cancun also has further reaching nonstop flights, whereas Punta Cana only goes as far west as Austin, Texas. As Punta Cana continues to grow in popularity, we will likely see more cities offering direct flights. For now, however, Cancun is cheaper and easier to fly to.

    Traveler Interest

One key indication of the general population’s interest in something is how many people search for it on Google. To see how interested people have been in Cancun and Punta Cana over the last year, we compared the two using Google Trends.

Looking at the graph above, we can see that for the past year, Punta Cana has been about half as popular as Cancun when it comes to Google searches. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Cancun is better, simply that it is searched for more often. Also, this only takes into account searches within the United States.

    The Bottom Line

Cancun and Punta Cana both offer incredible all-inclusive experiences for travelers heading for warmer weather and sandy shores. Which one comes out on top will ultimately be a decision for each individual traveler.

Cancun is better connected and cheaper to fly to, offers endless activities, and has world-class beaches with incredible amenities right along the shore. If you are after easy access to activities, late-night parties, and a more lively vibe, Cancun is for you.

    cancun skyline

Punta Cana has cheaper accommodations, offers more secluded beach experiences, and caters to travelers who enjoy adventuring outdoors when they aren’t relaxing at one of its luxurious all-inclusive properties. If you are after a location that feels less developed and more authentic, Punta Cana is for you.

Both destinations offer amazing experiences that will be remembered for a lifetime, and either one would be well worth a visit. Punta Cana and Cancun are both winners in our book. The best advice we can give travelers wondering which one to choose would be… choose both!
