Latin America is one of the trendiest tourist destinations among Americans currently.

A cross-continental region extending as North as Mexico and as South as Argentina, it is famous for its warm culture, native folklore, Luso-Hispanic heritage, and delectable cuisine.

While countries like the aforementioned Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia make headlines as tropical getaways, however, other LatAm countries are often ignored, even though they have just as much to offer on the nature front, and they may even be safer to visit.

That is the case with this lesser-known Global South country, which may not straddle the Caribbean nor have a glamorous beach as famous as Copacabana, but still makes for an incredible fall getaway…

Or should we say spring?

The Most Geographically Unique Country In The Global South

Perhaps the most unique South American country when geography is concerned, Chile’s territorial boundaries run for an elongated 4,000-plus miles along the South Pacific Ocean, giving it a strip-like shape.

It fully blocks Argentina‘s access to the Pacific, and it’s bordered to the North and Northeast by both Peru and Bolivia, respectively.

Other than Chile’s unusual shape, you may be wondering why exactly anyone would feel the impetus to fly there when tickets are not as cheap as when traveling to Central America or Colombia, and the country’s exposure to the Pacific and proximity to the South Pole make it much colder.

Well, if your love for South America is not restricted only to tropical beach resorts, and a rugged nature, majestic snow-capped Andean peaks, and rolling green hills dotted with vineyards also pique your interest, then you should give Chile a chance:

Chilean nature is truly a force to be reckoned with, as the country boasts one of the most diverse topographies anywhere in the world.

From the salt flats and arid, moon-like landscapes of the Atacama Desert to the impressive glaciers and ice fields of Patagonia and every valley, volcanic territory, and marine reserves in between, the country has a plethora of natural wonders awaiting discovery.

While fall is already descending upon the Northern Hemisphere, the Global South is about to bid farewell to winter and enter springtime, which means temperatures will start rising across Chile, flowers will be in full bloom, and you likely won’t need multiple layers of clothing being out in the open.

Of course, that depends on where you’re going.

Go On A Relaxing Vacay On The Chilean Pacific

If it’s the thought of kicking it back for a week in the upscale seaside resort of Viña del Mar that makes your heart skip a beat, you will find the weather surprisingly pleasant for sightseeing, and you may even attempt a dip in the ocean, though it certainly won’t be as warm as summer later in the year.

Luckily, Viña del Mar has a lot more to offer than just beaches.

It is a popular destination among Chileans themselves due to its lush gardens, high-rise buildings, casino resorts, and 19th-century colonial architecture. It even has a castle – Wulff – arguably the most picturesque in all of Latin America.

Further down the Chilean coast, Valparaíso is just as charming, full of colorful houses perched on clifftops overlooking the azure Pacific, accessible via long, steep funiculars, and home to a world-class Pablo Neruda museum housed in La Sebastiana, one of his former residences.

The national poet of Chile, he was an influential figure of the 20th century with strong links to Valparaíso.

The Beautiful La Serena

If you’re looking for a purely beach-based destination, La Serena is probably where you should spend most of your time.

The capital of the Coquimbo region, it boasts long, sandy beaches lapped by bright-blue waters and an up-and-coming resort scene with affordable overnight rates.

Staying at the Hotel Club La Serena on the oceanfront, Americans can expect to pay as little as $98 for a single bed with breakfast included, while rooms at the more upscale Laguna del Mar, with a private pool and beach access, start from roughly $148 this fall (or spring in Chile).

Once again, spring may not be the best time for swimming or sunbathing in Chile as days are still colder, with daytime averages of 69.8°F and as low as 44.6°F in the evenings, but there’s nothing stopping you from admiring the sights or having incredible gastronomy experiences.

Whether you’re a meat eater or you’re vegetarian/vegan/on a restricted diet, you will find relatively affordable restaurants specializing in Chile’s famous corn casseroles, that can be either stuffed with meat or veggies, cazuelas, a homemade stew with corn, rice, and potatoes, and the classic asado.

Explore The Fascinating Atacama Desert

San Pedro de Atacama is a favorite among adventurers flying to Chile, as it serves as the gateway to the desert, and it’s a small, traditionally Andean high-altitude town with whitewashed, thatched-roof houses.

The city of Pucón is also a popular stop on the way to the fascinating Chilean Lake Region. Sitting on the shores of Lake Villarrica, where white-water rafting and kayaking can be practiced, it offers views of the snow-dusted Villarrica Volcano.

Nature enthusiasts can choose from numerous hiking trails starting in Pucón, leading to forested valleys, natural hot springs, and sandy lake beaches. The most famous terms, the Geometricas Thermal Baths, is a hot spring with as many as 60 sources of water, hugged by an emerald forest.

In Puerto Varas, in the Southern Lake District, tourists will find a bucolic town with a distinct German architecture, which serves as a reminder of Chile’s multicultural demographic, surrounded by snowy mountains, including the Osorno and Calbuco Volcanoes, still in activity.

See Glaciers In Southern Patagonia

More dramatic nature can be found near Puerto Natales, a coastal port in Southern Patagonia, close to the South Pole.

It is a popular starting point for travelers headed for Torres del Paine, a national park packed with towering blue icebergs, glaciers, and granite formations.

From Puerto Natales, tours of the Patagonian fjords are also available, with several local tour companies offering day excursions of these remote wonders of nature for as cheap as $157, weather-dependent, such as Denomades.

Chile Is Safe For Visitors

Then, of course, there is Santiago del Chile, the country’s cosmopolitan capital and one of the safest in the Americas.

Chile is currently considered a Level 2 destination by U.S. authorities, which means Americans are not discouraged from visiting nor expressly told not to go.

When walking the skyscraper-lined boulevards of Santiago or exploring the city’s historic center, they must simply be aware of their surroundings, as pickpocketing remains a risk, and avoid flashing expensive valuables unnecessarily.

Santiago’s Sky Costanera is the tallest building in South America, rising 980 feet above ground, and for only $12, you can ascend to the very top and enjoy a breathtaking view of the sprawling metropolitan zone below and the Andes mountain range encircling it in the distance.

Both San Cristóbal and Santa Lucia Hills are other popular viewpoints for admiring Santiago’s memorable skyline.

From Santiago, popular day trips include visits to Valle Nevado, part of the Andean range and a natural park housing a ski station, and the historic Colchaga Valley, famous for its vineyards and wine-tasting experiences.

Is Chile Affordable?

When it comes to consumer prices, it’s a well-known fact Chile is not the most affordable Latin American destination.

It is, after all, the most developed country in the Global South, ahead of Brazil and Argentina even, and the standards of living can be considerably higher.

On average, travelers have spent $113 per day on vacation to Chile, according to BudgetYourTrip, owing mostly to the higher cost of accommodation and tourist experiences.

A hotel room for a couple is an average $129, but on the bright side, food can be remarkably cheap if you know where to go, with travelers spending an average of $25 on meals per day.

This fall, Americans can fly nonstop to Santiago from Miami for as cheap as $464 one-way.

Croatia is the go-to sunny spot for Americans taking Transatlantic trips this summer and fall, and while the walled Dubrovnik and vibrant Split have dominated headlines in recent weeks, other lesser-explored parts of the country have continued to fly under the radar of most.

That is the case with Pula, a smaller city in Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula, far away from the busy and over-touristed Dalmatia, and one that tourists often tended to ignore as they traveled South to the resort zone of Neretva County.

The Most Italian Of Croatia’s Cities

With a metropolitan area home to over 90,000 people, Pula is the largest city in the Istria region and one of Croatia’s most culturally-charged ports.

Historically a part of the Itallic world – Pula was in fact an Italian city up until the Second World War – it is more closely related to the Latin World than Slavic proper.

Pula’s most famous landmark, in fact, is a Roman Amphitheater, one of the most impressive of the wider Roman World and one that rivals Rome’s Colosseum in beauty. For instance, it is the only Roman structure of its kind to have its arena ring and side towers entirely preserved.

Known as the Pula Arena, it was erected between the years 27 BC and 68 AD, and it’s both one of the last six largest surviving arenas of the Roman period, as well as Croatia’s best-preserved ancient monument.

A Booming Cultural Scene

Additionally, the city is the gateway to the wider Istrian Peninsula, where vineyards dot the rolling green hills, pebbly beaches straddle the turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea, perhaps the clearest arm of the Mediterranean, and marine parks extend for miles on end.

Pula has got so trendy in recent years that it is now planning on strengthening infrastructure amid a new influx of young visitors. Despite the recent price surges observed across Croatia, especially after the country joined the Eurozone, Pula seems to always be on the brink of ‘selling out’.

Is Pula Croatia’s Next Hotspot?

As reported by Total Croatia News, the city of Roman wonders and festivals has hosted up to 25 thousand guests at a time, and as early as May 2023, private accommodation units were all sold out and bars and restaurants full.

As a hotel owner from Pula stated, visitors to Croatia stay in ‘one destination for a shorter period’, cramming as many coastal attractions as they can into a single itinerary, so Pula is ‘reduced to a type of station tourism’.

This means accommodation providers have had to level up and provide the best possible service so to attract the most short-term visitors, and despite the rising prices, a direct result of the aforementioned tourism model which creates ‘additional costs’ for hoteliers, Pula continues to grow.

They weren’t common before, but now hostels are also popping up along the Istrian coast, and there are about 20 of them in Pula proper, making this destination more accessible to young travelers on a stricter budget.

Are Transatlantic Flights Next?

Finally, yet another proof Pula is set to become Croatia’s next hotspot is the lengthening of the airport’s runway in a bid to host Transatlantic flights for the first time ever in the coming years. Should the local authorities’ plan materialize, Pula will be only the third in Croatia to do so.

Right now, Air Transat operates flights from Zagreb, the country’s capital and financial center to Toronto in Canada, carrying passengers on an Airbus A330-200. Additionally, Drubovnik is served by a United Airlines Boeing 767-300 seasonally, with flights departing from Newark.

Connectivity between the U.S. and Canada and the Balkan Peninsula (excluding mainland Greece) is generally poor, with very limited flight options and flight itineraries generally including a stopover in a larger international hub elsewhere in Europe.

The only Balkan country to host year-round nonstop flights from North America is Serbia, yet it remains one of the least-visited destinations by Americans in the continent. Should Pula attain its goal, it will be a game-changer for Istria – and Croatia as a whole.

No plans for an official launch date, which American hubs would be served, nor which airlines could possibly operate on this route have been revealed yet, as this is still early stages, with construction underway and development plans yet to be laid out, but the news are very promising.

One of these hidden gems is Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nestled in the heart of the Balkan region, this country is filled with beauty, warmth, and seemingly countless other reasons to visit. While the Balkans have seen a vast increase in tourism in the past couple of years, some countries have emerged more popular than others.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of those places that has remained a bit of a secret amongst travelers, and the country is hoping to change that with a reinvested interest in bringing travelers in.

Here is why Bosnia and Herzegovina should be on your travel radar this year:

Culture & History

To get to know Bosnia and Herzegovina, start in the vibrant capital of Sarajevo. A favorite amongst those who visit, this city is jam-packed with history and wears the scars of its horrific past for the world to see. Just look for the ‘Sarajevo roses’ all over the pavement, with the markings of past shells that have been painted red to commemorate those who lost their lives in the world’s longest siege that gripped the city in the 90s.

With a history so complex, getting into it here would not do it justice. A visit to Sarajevo will educate travelers on the major plot lines of what they need to know. Just be aware that the country is home to three main ethnic groups, Bosniaks, Serbians, and Croats. And the Bosnian war (to sum it up) was fought amongst these groups, although now they live alongside each other more or less peacefully.

As with most of its Balkan neighbors, one big plus with visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina is the fact that it remains an incredibly budget-friendly destination, and your money will go much farther here than in other European countries.

In fact, this is one of the cheapest countries in Europe, with food and drink coming in way less than even nearby Croatia or Montenegro. Accommodation and transportation are also much cheaper here, and one bonus is that there really isn’t ‘high season’ here yet, meaning there are no price increases depending on the month you visit.

Nature For All Seasons

While there isn’t technically a high and low season, there are, of course, times of the year when more and fewer people visit. Similar to many countries in the surrounding area, the tourism season here is centered around April, June, July, August, and September. While these warmer months offer the chance to experience the country during its long and sunny days, sometimes the heat can get a bit much. Mostar, for example, can get a bit crowded, with its narrow and windy lanes filled with tourists, some of whom come on day trips from cruises that have docked at nearby Croatia.

Those who are looking for a beach holiday will often not consider Bosnia and Herzegovina, although the small 20km stretch of coast along the Adriatic makes it the second smallest coastline in the world and does offer some beaches.

Popular places to visit in the warmer months include Una National Park, Jajce, and of course, Mostar. Watch the divers on Start Most collect money from onlookers before they make the trying plunge into the shallow waters below and enjoy the picturesque restaurants with terraces that hang over the Neretva River.

Winter activities are popular here in February and March when the winter sun shines, and the days are starting to grow longer than in December and January. The mountain towns are especially picturesque when covered in snow, and skiing and other winter sports are popular here (after all, it did host the Winter Olympics). Not only is hitting the slopes here much cheaper than in other European countries, but the number of dreamy winter lodges makes it an ideal place to cozy up from the cold.

Food & Drink

First things first, drinking Bosnian coffee might be worth the trip on its own. Although some say it’s nearly identical to Turkish coffee, it still should be experienced to be understood. The daily ritual of taking a small cup of strong coffee from the copper-plated pot, topping it off with a bit of sugar, and finishing it off with a small Turkish delight candy, is a must-do while visiting. Just remember not to tip the whole cup back and drink the thick grounds from the bottom, as I may or may not have done my first time.

Coffee aside, Bosnian cuisine is similar to its Balkan neighbors and is meat and bread heavy, with an emphasis on seasonal vegetables and stewed pots of deliciousness. Cevapi is a popular choice amongst people from all walks of life, and the grilled sausages are served with raw onions and grilled bread.

Another famous grab-and-go dish is Burek, which is a stuffed pasty well known among many Balkan countries. Desserts are worth the calories here as well, and the fruit-based Tufahija or biscuity Hurmašica are both popular options.

Writing an article about Bosnia and Herzegovina and not mentioning the country’s growing wine scene would be a shame, as the over 2 million cases that they produce are winning over more visitors each year. Most of the grapes come from the area surrounding Mostar, and the most well-known variety is Žilavka. Much more budget-friendly than other options, a bottle of Bosnian wine pairs perfectly with your grilled meats and stewed vegetables.

Easily Accessible

Having been recognized as a “candidate country” by the EU, Bosnia and Herzegovina is working to become more connected to other European cities. While buses, roads, and rail within the country are developing (very slowly, as some locals might say), access from nearby neighboring countries is pretty straightforward. Many come from Croatia, starting from the cities of Split or Dubrovnik. Busses from Serbia and Montenegro are options as well.

There are a few other airports in the country, but Sarajevo is by far the biggest and most popular option for travelers coming from further afield than the Balkan states. Although it was previously serviced by budget airline Wizz Air, the company has left this route and now Sarajevo International Airport is in talks with Ryanair to establish a hub here.

So, for now, budget airlines are not an option to fly into Sarajevo, but Turkish air and other main carriers are good options for connection routes. For example, when trying to return to New York in 2021, I found a much cheaper ticket from Sarajevo (with a short connection in Istanbul) than I could find in nearby Split, Croatia.

So while it might not be the easiest place to find cheap flights to, it’s definitely possible to fly here for a lower cost than some other nearby cities, and of course, a bit of flexibility with the dates helps as well.

Coming in 10th on the list, we find the capital city of this underrated destination, with a global holiday safety score of 7.56/10. Ljubljana scores high marks since violent crime is rare, and the city is known to be very safe, as is the country of Slovenia in general.

Some have claimed this small city is the safest capital of the Eastern European countries, and visitors can walk around at night with no more than a normal level of awareness and precautions. The city’s old town, in general, has a reputation amongst traverses as being safe and welcoming, and those who visit can explore the streets and cafes even after the sun goes down.

Bern, Switzerland

This Swiss capital city ranked second on the list, making it one of the safest cities in the world for tourists, with an overall global holiday safety score of 8.64/10. While this city tends to get passed over by many tourists who flock to the more famous Swiss cities, there are plenty of reasons to explore safe and charming Bern.

The city scored high marks in particular for both the reliability of police and rule of law categories, as well as LGBT social acceptance. So, if you find yourself exploring Switzerland this year, don’t miss Bern! Tallinn, Estonia

While you might not need any more reasons to visit this underrated capital city, the high marks it received for its global holiday safety score might help to entice you to book the trip and explore this small Baltic gem. With a score of 7.16/10, Tallinn ranks 17 amongst the 100 destinations included in this study, making it considerably safer than many other European cities.

High marks for this city included a large percentage of people who feel safe walking alone at night (almost 70%) and a global terrorism index of 0. Tallinn is a city that gets into people’s hearts quite quickly, and travelers who go there often stay longer than expected. In fact, some make it a long-term base for traveling the nearby Baltic region.

Bruges, Belgium

Named one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Europe to visit, Bruges just made the top 20 list for safest holiday destinations. The city ties with Prague as number 19, both scoring 6.98/10 for a global holiday safety score. Bruges ranks high for LGBT acceptance and low for the percentage of people worried about being mugged or robbed.

While violent crime is very rare in this picturesque city, it’s important to remember that normal precautions should be then to avoid petty theft, as it is a tourist destination, after all. So sit back and drink some of the famous Belgium Beer in one of the many cafes tucked along the postcard-worthy canal-side streets as you watch the tour boats float by.

Salzburg, Austria

If a country has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, such as Austria, it should come as no surprise to see one of its cities on this list. Salzburg scores a 7.88/10 for this global holiday safety index, with high marks for both people feeling safe waking at night, as well as rule of law and the reliability of police.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is full of culture and beautiful sights. From beer gardens, museums, and riverside cafes, to Mozart and the Von Trapp family, there is so much to see and do in Salzburg. Many miss this city in favor of Vienna (which is understandable as Vienna is a fantastic destination in its own right), but those who are looking for a safe and culture-packed trip set amongst the Salzach River and the foothills of the Alps should check out Salzburg this year.
