According to the Digital Nomad Index from VisaGuide.World, these are the top countries for digital nomads right now, based on factors like the availability of a digital nomad visa, affordability, Internet speed, tourism popularity, and more.

5. Croatia

It’s no surprise that Croatia is in the top five when it comes to the best countries for digital nomads. Croatia is one of the most-loved digital nomad hubs in the world.

This beautiful European country offers gorgeous nature, fabulous islands and beaches, quaint and historic cities, and good weather. Although prices have been increasing, it’s also still relatively affordable compared to many destinations in Europe.

The best location for digital nomads in Croatia is Split. This beautiful, lively city is perfectly positioned for exploring national parks, islands, and other coastal towns.

4. United Arab Emirates

Next up, the UAE is a good choice for digital nomads who are looking for a base in the Middle East. Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi are popular cities for digital nomads.

Unlike other countries on this list, living in the UAE will come with a higher price tag. It also requires that digital nomads earn at least $5,000 per month to qualify for the country’s digital nomad visa.

But if you don’t mind the higher cost of living, you can still enjoy a great lifestyle in the UAE at a lower cost compared to major cities in the United States.

3. Romania

Romania is one of the top destinations in Europe for digital nomads. This Eastern European country has been growing in popularity with digital nomads and remote workers.

Why? It’s a stunning yet underrated country, with the Transylvania region being one of the most beautiful destinations in all of Europe. Bucharest, Romania’s capital city, is also extremely cool. It’s extremely affordable, and it makes a great base for digital nomads.

Interestingly, Romania also has some of the fastest Internet speeds in the world — which may seem like a small thing, but it’s actually huge for digital nomads!

2. Argentina

The top country in South America for digital nomads is Argentina. This massive country is filled with breathtaking scenery, from Patagonia in the south to Iguazu Falls in the north.

Argentina is also home to an amazing capital. Buenos Aires is the best city in South America for digital nomads. I spent a month there myself, and I was blown away by how awesome this city is. There’s always so much to do, and the cost of living is incredibly low.

In fact, Argentina is the most affordable country on this list for digital nomads, and yet you won’t sacrifice any quality of life here. Aside from Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Mendoza are two other major cities that are great for digital nomads.

1. Spain

Finally, Spain comes in at number one for the best digital nomad countries in the world.

You can’t beat life in Spain. It’s one of the most affordable countries in Western Europe. Cities in beautiful southern Spain, such as Seville, Granada, and Malaga, are notably less expensive than bigger cities like Madrid and Barcelona. There’s so much to explore in Spain, and getting around is easy.

Spain also offers one of the easiest digital nomad visas in Europe, with a minimum monthly earning requirement of approximately $2,270. This is significantly lower than the requirements in some other countries.

Why This Less Visited Country Was Just Ranked Best In Europe For Digital Nomads

The digital nomad lifestyle is a different way of traveling that allows you to get a more complete experience of what life is like in a country compared to traditional, shorter tourism trips.

Even in countries that don’t have specific digital nomad visas, staying longer and continuing your work while you travel is a great way to dive deeper into a place.

Often, the most challenging part of this lifestyle is choosing where to go – so how does the country that just ranked best in Europe for remote work sound?

That prestigious honor belongs to the underrated Scandinavian nation of Denmark, which came out on top in the 2023 Global Remote Work Index by network access provider Nordlayer.

Countries were judged on factors including cyber safety, economic safety, social safety, and digital and physical infrastructure.

Here’s why Denmark secured the number one position and why it is one of my favorite countries in Europe:

Safe And Modern

Denmark is known for being a safe country. In fact, it ranked second in the whole world in the 2023 Global Peace Index.

Not only does the country have low levels of crime, but it’s also strong on issues such as social safety and digital and cyber security, which are important considerations for digital nomads.

Denmark is a modern country with great infrastructure – from its reliable public transport network to its widely available and stable internet connections.

It also has great healthcare, and English is very widely spoken, especially in and around the capital city of Copenhagen.

This solid infrastructure does, however, mean that Denmark is not the cheapest option when it comes to digital nomad destinations in Europe.

Hip And Trendy

Scandinavia is known for its unique style, with Denmark at the heart of that.

From the simple and striking architecture of its cities to social wellness concepts such as Hygge (a feeling of coziness), Denmark has been a trendsetter on the global stage for many years now.

And if you want to check out one of the trendiest places in this very hip country, then look no further than the Havnen district of Denmark’s capital city, Copenhagen, which was recently voted the fourth coolest neighborhood in the world by Time Out.

Its stylish waterfront cafés and bars are the perfect place to sit with a laptop and get through a couple of hours of work in style.

An Easy Place To Visit

While Denmark has no specific digital nomad visa, American citizens benefit from visa-free entry into the country for stays of up of 90 days, which gives you plenty of flexibility to stay for a few months.

As mentioned above, English is very widely spoken, which makes arranging places to stay and getting around the country very easy.

Many Danes help to improve their English by watching American movies and TV shows.

The currency used in Denmark is the Danish Krone, which at the time of writing had a conversion of about 7 Krone to US$1.

You can fly to Copenhagen airport directly from many American cities, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Something For Every Taste

Whether it’s exploring the pretty and colorful waterfront boulevard of Nyhavn in Copenhagen or taking long walks on the pristine sandy beaches in the west of Jutland, Denmark has a little of something for everyone.

The country is relatively small and can be easily traversed in four or five hours via the train network.

Here are three of my favorite surprise destinations in Denmark:

Møns Klint

For those of you who thought Denmark was flat, think again.

Tucked away in the southeast corner of the country is the Møns Klint, a dramatic white cliff face that juts up more than 400 feet above the sea below.

This four-mile stretch of impressive landscape is a great place to take in some wild nature or enjoy a picnic in warmer months.

Bornholm

A remote and beautiful island located away from the Danish mainland in the Baltic Sea, Bornholm is a fantastic place for a quiet retreat.

The island boasts cute fishing villages, iconic and historic Danish architecture, and a slow-paced way of life.

It also has great food, including what the Danish Tourism Board claims could be the world’s only Michelin-starred beach shack at Dueodde Beach.

Aarhus

This region is about a three-hour drive from Copenhagen and boasts a cultural city, some fascinating museums, and also some beautiful nature.

The Mols Bjerge National Park is a fabulous place to see in this area, as is the Djursland Peninsula.

As some of Europe’s biggest hotspots become increasingly commercialized, those looking for an authentic, laid-back experience sightseeing The Old Continent are struggling to find a destination worth going to.

Luckily, Europe has yet to be overtaken entirely by mass tourism, as there are still plenty of towns and cities that boast the kind of charm most tourists pay to experience.

There is a relatively unknown Czech city, for example, that has recently attracted interest thanks to a Booking report that listed it as one of 2023’s top travel destinations. Since then, it has been touted as one of Europe’s best-kept secrets.

Rich History

Olomouc boasts a long, rich history that dates back to the 7th century, though the city wasn’t officially founded until the 13th century.

Its historical significance is mirrored by the stunning, well-preserved architecture, some of which (namely, the Holy Trinity Column) is even preserved by UNESCO.

A Lot To See And Do

History buffs aren’t the only ones who can appreciate the allure of Olomouc.

There’s a lot to see and do in the city, so if you’re only planning to stay a couple of days, prepare for a jam-packed itinerary.

Other landmarks you’ll want to visit aside from the Holy Trinity Column include the Astronomical Clock, the city’s Botanical Gardens, the 6 Baroque fountains, and Palacky University, which is one of the oldest institutions in Central Europe, dating back to 1573.

While sightseeing, you won’t want to miss out on the Olomouc Castle either, which has been a National Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic since 1962.

Consider adding Hradisko Monastery, Bezruč Park, the St. Wenceslas Cathedral, and the Museum of Modern Art to your list of must-sees as well.

The local cuisine is just as charming and impressive as the architecture.

Olomouc specialties such as tvarůžky or Moravian-style kolaches will have even the pickiest eaters asking for seconds.

While at it, don’t forget to try some locally-made beer from nearby breweries. A 0.5 l (17 ounces) pint costs less than $2 in most places, so you won’t have to compromise your budget for a good drink here.

However, if you really want to get the full Olomouc experience, I recommend visiting one of the local markets, where you can walk among locals and sample fresh produce, cheeses, and more.

Charming Atmosphere

Though Olomouc provides tourists with lots to see and do, what really sets it apart from other big cities in Central Europe is the fact that it still retains a certain kind of charm that’s hard to find in the likes of Prague, Vienna, or Warsaw.

The city is rarely crowded, so you can walk around at your own pace without feeling overwhelmed or anxious.

The picturesque cobblestone streets will just add to the quaint, cozy atmosphere that you’ll experience here.

If you happen to visit Olomouc near Christmas time, be sure to go to the Moravian Christmas markets at least once – that’s the quintessential Olomouc experience.

The locals are lovely, too. Not to mention nearly everyone speaks English, so the language barrier shouldn’t be much of an issue.

Excellent Location

Located only a two-hour train ride away from Prague, Olomouc is very easy to get to and out of.

The city is well connected by both train and road, not only with other major cities in the Czech Republic but also with neighboring countries.

So, if you’d still rather spend most of your trip in a bigger city like Prague, you can always set aside a day or two to visit Olomouc and just commute back and forth.

Stunning Scenery

With the city being nestled under Hrubý Jeseník (one of the highest mountain ranges in the Czech Republic), walking through the streets of Olomouc will feel like something straight out of a movie.

If you go during spring or fall, you’ll get to experience the vibrant mosaic of colors created by the maples, oaks, and pines.

The same level of effort that has been put toward preserving the area’s historical buildings can also be felt in the way the city has maintained its natural beauty, offering tourists the opportunity to walk, hike, and enjoy all outdoor activities while taking in the stunning scenery.

The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has recently unveiled its list of best villages to visit around the world, based not only on their quaintness and charm, but also social and environmental sustainability. Interestingly, 3 small towns in Spain are among those listed, recognized for their sheer beauty, medieval History and inestimable cultural value.

This year, demand for travel to Spain soared to new heights, especially after it reopened for international travel, restriction-free. For the first time, however, it’s the lesser-known destinations that are gaining the most traction as millions of sun-seeking Americans journey across the pond in search of their idyllic Mediterranean getaway.

If the buzzing crowds and energetic atmosphere of cities like Barcelona and Madrid are not for you, this is where you should be heading instead:

Rupit, Catalonia

Rupit is a gorgeous rustic gem in the heart of Catalonia, one of the autonomous provinces of Spain with a regional identity so strong it could be its own nation. The stone-built Old Town, which dates back to the 12th century and has been left virtually unspoiled amid the country’s rapid 20th century urbanization, is easily the main point of interest.

Having grown out of the fortified gates of a hilltop castle, the village blends naturally with the mountainous scenery and craggy surroundings. It’s almost as if the ancient houses, dating back at least 500 years, and the winding cobblestone streets that lead to secret passageways and tiny plazoletas rise naturally out of the rock formations.

Rupit is definitely not on everyone’s radar, or plagued by overdevelopment, and being a short two-hour drive north of Barcelona, it makes for a perfect day trip idea, especially for those looking to escape the Instagram hordes cramming into every possible Game of Thrones filming location in Girona, or the overpriced beach towns lining Costa Brava.

Alquezar, Aragon

If you consider yourself an outdoorsy person, you should definitely make Alquezar a priority on your next travel itinerary. Located in a bucolic setting at the foot of the Pyrenees, it acts as a gateway to an area of truly outstanding natural beauty. Hiking spots, nature trails, a meandering stream and sweeping mountain views: it truly has it all.

The most popular pastime among visitors to Alquezar is tracing the path beginning in the Monchiriguel Fountain, in the center of town, and ending in the La Fuente canyon. A remarkable little town famous for its traditional architecture, it is the proud home of the imposing 14th century Monastery of Saint Mary of Guadalupe, one of Spain’s finest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For History aficionados, the monastery is a must-see landmark: is the exact spot where Christopher Columbus made his first pilgrimage after ‘discovering’ the Americas in 1492, thanking the heavens for the achievement. His love for Guadaloupe is well-documented: he went as far as naming a Caribbean island in its honor.

Besides being a culturally and religiously important site, Guadeloupe is often used as a base for travelers exploring the wider province of Caceres. Other regional attractions include the Monfrague National Park, a sought-after hotspot in the birdwatching community, and Trujillo, a heavily fortified town packed with medieval and Renaissance buildings.

Spain Has The Most Entries Out Of Any Country On The List

The director of the Spanish Tourist Office in London was quoted saying they were ‘delighted’ the three Spanish villages were acknowledged as distinguished tourism hubs, especially now that the nation is expanding its promotional efforts to under-visited towns: ‘we aim to promote community-led tourism across Spain and are thrilled at the international recognition‘.

A total of 136 villages were submitted for consideration, with each UN member state allowed to nominate up to three candidates. This means all three of Spain’s submissions – Rupit, Alquezar and Guadalupe – made it to the final list, more than any other country. The full list of 32 destinations feature other beautiful villages in Switzerland, Italy, China and Vietnam.

The UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili, stated toruism can be a ‘true gamechanger’ for rural communities, creating more jobs, supporting hard-hit businesses in the wake of the Covid crisis, and ‘keeping traditions alive‘. For Pololikashvili, the list showcases the ‘power’ of the sector in driving ‘economic diversification’ outside large urban centers.

Cancun is calling, once again.

TripAdvisor released its fall travel index this week and the verdict is in: Mexico ranks #1 for U.S. travelers this fall, with Cancun being the top destination of choice for 2022.

While Cancun broke records for its number of international arrivals over the pandemic, things don’t seem to be slowing down for Cancun. With pristine beaches, plenty of all-inclusive getaway opportunities, festivals galore, great food, a huge party scene, and so much more, tourists can’t seem to get enough of Cancun.

In this post, we’ll go through what to look forward to when visiting Cancun for the fall season 2022.

Fall Is The Ideal Season To Travel To Cancun

Visiting Cancun during the fall months (October-December) means that you’ll have escaped the intense heat (well, more intense than usual) of the summer months. Instead, you’ll be treated with evening breezes and mild morning temperatures.

Just be aware that October is typically the tail end of the hurricane season which is most of late August and September, so you might encounter some bits of rain or stormy weather.

October Marks The End Of ‘Sargassum Season’

One of the biggest environmental issues in the Caribbean over the past years is the record-breaking amounts of sargassum that have been appearing on beaches in Cancun and the nearby regions.

If you visit Cancun this fall, you won’t have to worry about it as much. The high season for sargassum (typically) begins in March and lasts until September, so you can hope for sargassum-free beaches on your October trip to Cancun.

According to some of the most extensive research on the subject, sargassum appears to be the result of lots of factors including warming water temperatures and over-nutrified water from a growing human nitrogen footprint.

Cancun’s majestic ‘Hotel Zone’ and the surrounding area is where you can find some of the most top notch beaches in the world. And, it’s also where you can pamper yourself at some of Mexico’s most stylish all-inclusive resorts.

Large hotel chains have been adding new all-inclusive hotels to the area over the past few years, so luxury tourists definitely won’t be starved for choice when it comes to picking their perfect getaway.

What To Do In The Riviera Maya: Day Trips Galore

Cancun is the beginning of the beautiful Mayan Riviera.

From the hotel zone in Cancun, to Playa del Carmen, Akumal, and beyond, this strip of land is not only filled with powdery, white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, but plenty of day trips and excursion opportunities for an unforgettable vacation.

If you’re looking for some excursions, start with the MUSA, an underwater conservation museum where you can snorkel or dive amongst sculptures and some local marine life. Or, you can opt for a glass-bottom boat tour of the area!

Top destinations for American travelers such as Canada, Costa Rica, France, and the United Kingdom are on Level 3

A few weeks ago the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States changed its travel advisory levels. “Level 4 Special Circumstances/Do Not Travel”, which used to be the highest risk category is now restricted for extreme cases such as health care infrastructure collapse or if a new COVID-19 variant emerges.

Level 3 is currently called “COVID-19 High” and it is the highest risk category, the destinations on this level are not recommended for travelers. A country is assigned to this level when there have been over 100 cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people over the last 28 days. At the moment there are 109 countries in this category, including the British Virgin Islands, a destination added last Monday.

If travelers visit high-risk locations on level 3, they should have their vaccines up to date. CDC considers that those who visit destinations in this category are more likely to get sick from COVID-19, especially without vaccinations or with a weakened immune system.

Despite the ease of travel restrictions worldwide and new routes and services offered by airlines, some popular destinations for American travelers are of high risk. According to the CDC, these top destinations are still on Level 3:
- Aruba
- Belgium
- Canada
- Costa Rica
- Cuba
- France
- Germany
- Greece
- Italy
- Portugal
- Spain
- The United Kingdom
The United States is not included in this list but it is also in red color in the map provided by the CDC.

Other Destinations On Level 3

Travelers should stay up to date with travel restrictions and the CDC recommendations. To see all countries included in the list of each category, they must visit the COVID-19 Travel Recommendations by Destination page. But here’s a good summary of the most visited locations.

Perhaps Europe is the continent with the most popular countries for travelers included in the list. The CDC considered these countries of high risk: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, The Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

In the Caribbean, these islands have high levels of COVID-19 according to the information provided by the CDC: Aruba, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curaçao, and Dominica.

In North America, Canada and the United States are also marked as high risk. In Central America, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Panama; and in the south, the CDC has warned about Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, and Uruguay.

Australia and New Zealand were also flagged as dangerous and, according to the agency, adventurous travelers visiting attractive destinations in Asia should stay cautious before visiting Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives, or Vietnam, also included on level 3.

CDC’s Recommendations

Even though many airlines removed the mask mandate and many countries removed covid–related travel restrictions, the CDC still urges travelers to wear masks during flights, stay up to date with covid vaccines —including boosters—, and consider the destination’s specific travel recommendations.

At the moment, almost 25 countries are in “Level 2: Covid-19 Moderate” —which means 50 to 100 covid cases per 100,000 residents in the past 28 days. In this category are included attractive destinations such as Mexico, The Bahamas, Fiji, and Paraguay.

Those who prefer to follow the agency’s advice can visit destinations on “Level 1: COVID-19 Low”, which includes countries with 50 or fewer cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people. There are over 50 countries on this list, including attractive destinations like Colombia, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, the Philippines, and India.

The level categories represent a dynamic system that is constantly changing and being updated depending on recent information related to each destination. Revising CDC’s updates and detailed information on a country is a good strategy for travelers who will be visiting foreign countries and want to stay safe.
