When you think of Cambodia, the most famous site that comes to mind is probably the jaw-dropping Angkor Wat. As one of the most popular tourist attractions in Asia and one of the most famous landmarks in the world, Angkor Wat is an absolute must-see. While Khmer is the official language, English is wildly spoken and understood in most of the places that a tourist would go.

Note: while infrastructure is improving, in some areas, it seems to be doing more harm than good. For example, what was once the beach paradise backpacking hub of Sihanoukville has now become a giant tourist trap, with littered beaches and a complete washout of the original charm.

If you are looking for beaches nowadays people skip Sihanoukville and head to Koh Rong Sanloem, Koh Rong, or Sok San Beach. As a solo traveler, you will have no issues on the beach in the daytime, not to mention you should have no problem finding parties after dark to meet other travelers.

Walking along the cobblestone streets surrounded by the distinct waft of Tapas foods, the laughter of locals, and the stomping of feet as a Flamenco show was being performed at Plaza de España.

It was at this moment I realized Sevilla was one of my favorite cities as a solo traveler.

The capital of Andalusia, Sevilla is located in the Southwest region of the country within close proximity to other popular parts of Spain.

I’ve traveled here twice now and have also visited many, many cities around Europe: but this one certainly has a special place in my heart.

If you’re new to solo travel or are a seasoned pro, Sevilla should definitely be on your list if you’re looking for a safe starting point in Spain. Easy to navigate, extremely friendly locals, and a homely feel — these are some of the many reasons Sevilla is a must for solo travelers!

Safety

After traveling around Spain and most of Europe, I’ve definitely felt the safest exploring Sevilla. During the day, tourists and locals are buzzing around the streets, but similarly at night the city comes alive with people looking for good food and better drinks.

The Spaniards are known for taking mid-day siestas and resurfacing as the sun sets. It’s pretty common here to eat dinner after 9 pm, so as a solo traveler, you’ll always see people around the streets- which is a comforting feeling in a new city.

Crime rates in Sevilla are extremely low, and the streets are well-lit, so if you’ve had a long evening, you’ll be okay here alone. Taxis, Ubers, and public transportation are also very safe and reliable. Like any city, pickpockets are around occasionally, so just be careful with that.

Hostel Culture

If you’re into hostels, there are so many scattered throughout Sevilla. I stayed at Oasis Backpackers during my stay and had the best time.

With organized bar crawls, events, and a bonus pool on the rooftop, it’s a surefire way to meet other like-minded travelers.

Most of the hostels are located close to each other, so you’ll also sometimes meet others in the area. Depending on what you’re looking for, there are quieter hostels or ones that organize a few more social events. I always opt for the social ones when I’m solo to get to know people.

Location

Sevilla is the prime spot to explore other parts of Spain. While I was here, I managed to squeeze in the White Villages, Ronda, and Cadiz.

It’s also really close to Faro in Portugal- which I also recommend as a solo traveler. It’s easy to hop on the local buses or trains to travel around Spain but be prepared for cancellations and delays during the busier seasons.

If you’re in the mood to see some monkeys, Gibraltar is also a popular day trip from Seville. Malaga and Granada are just under 3 hours from the city but book your transportation well in advance because they sell out quickly in the summer with locals and tourists looking to explore.

The People

A big draw for me when choosing a travel location is always the people- and in Sevilla, they’re some of the friendliest! Even with a slight language barrier, you’ll always be greeted with a smile.

I was in a restaurant here where the waiter had no idea what I was saying, but he still spoke to me in Spanish and helped me out with the menu.

Most of the locals are willing to offer up tips and recommendations of what to eat and where to go: so you’re in luck!

Having featured extensively in the media and existing in our collective imagination as Italy’s magical city on water, it draws in millions of tourists every year.

Sadly, Venice has been battling its own serious issues lately, and it seems to be failing to overcome them, making it an increasingly less attractive destination in what’s already an overcrowded country.

But how exactly is the maritime power meeting its downfall – once again – and why should you avoid it?

In this article, we will give you 5 reasons why Venice is best avoided this year (and early fall):

Pickpockets Are Out In Droves

Unless you’ve been living under a rock in the last few weeks, you’ve probably scrolled past a series of videos of an enthusiastic Italian woman denouncing ‘borseggiatori’ in Venice.

The infamous ‘pickpockets’ roam the canal city targeting newcomers who are not yet familiar with local safety measures.

Recently, Italy was named the absolute worst for pickpocketing in Europe, and a majority of occurrences seem to be centered in the tourist hotspots of Rome, Milan, Florence, and of course, Venice, as it is one of the country’s leading destinations.

Overall, there are 463 pickpocketing mentions across Italian cities for every million visitors, the highest figure in Europe.

Speaking in an American or British accent, you will soon notice some Venetians may look at you as if they’re rolling their eyes internally, or you could even get a taste of their world-renowned rudeness towards tourists.

Don’t get us wrong, Italians are incredibly warm, friendly people, but they are navigating a fine line between being receptive to tourism, as it is part of their income, and having their livelihoods disrupted due to an uncontrolled increase in the number of visitors – and they have made their dissatisfaction known a number of times before.

There Is A Ticketing System Coming

Venice is so fed up with tourists that it now wants to introduce a ticketing system set to affect all American, British, and European passport holders visiting the lagoon and its many islands.

In other words, you will need to buy a ticket to enter the city, which only adds to the cost of visiting, as tourists are already subject to a visitor tax, and a ban on day trips when traveling as cruise passengers. Though the measure is yet to be implemented, it has already been confirmed.

Once implemented, tickets will be issued as QR codes to be checked upon entry at one of the city’s to-be-designated entry points. As you can see, this is a destination that has made it clear tourists should reconsider visiting unless they are willing to stay longer and pay up.

Venice Is Mad Expensive

On the topic of affordability, Venice is probably one of the most expensive cities for tourists not only in Italy but all of Southern Europe.

According to the popular crowd-sourced database Budget Your Trip, a peak-season trip to Venice will cost on average $253 per day, with tourists expected to spend on average $71 for meals per day at mid-range restaurants and around $30 on public transportation.

Additionally, hotel prices for two individuals average $265 per night, increasing the cost of a week-long sejour in Venice to roughly $3,542.

Unless you’re saving up by not eating out most nights, staying in a shared room in a hostel, and skipping museums, a Venice vacay surely has the potential to break the bank if you’re a budget traveler.

Venice Risks Becoming A World Heritage Site In Danger

Finally, UNESCO has recommended adding Venice to its list of World Heritage Sites in danger, largely due to overtourism concerns and the city’s failed attempts at adapting to the climate crisis.

As you should know by now, Venice is built on a complex ecosystem of islands scattered around a shallow lagoon, and it often sees either flooding or disruptive droughts depending on the season that often leave its picturesque canals drained for days on end.

These disturbances continuously threaten to damage the city’s architectural treasures, not to mention the scale of tourism it experiences, which contributes to more littering, the degradation of public spaces, and overall deterioration as a result of human interference.

UNESCO now believes Venice, one of our civilization’s greatest feats, faces ‘irreversible damage’, and proposes it is added to the organization’s in-danger listing from September. This means tourists should expect heightened surveillance and even more restrictive measures to curb visitation.
