That’s right; while Boston is a winner in all seasons, fall is a magical time in Beantown. The trees begin to change color, and the air becomes crisp, making for the most picturesque cityscapes in the U.S.

And if Bostonians are one thing — it’s spirited.

The city’s people are extremely proud of their sports culture but also know how to celebrate a season or two. If you visit in the fall, expect to see pumpkins… everywhere!

Decor Done Right

If you’re familiar with Boston, then you’ve heard of Beacon Hill, one of the most charming neighborhoods in the city; think: narrow alleyways, towering brownstones, and decorative stoops.

Each year, residents go above and beyond in a stoop competition in the fall. Last year, the city saw an entire house inspired by the Harry Potter movies, graveyards, and more- it’s really something not to be missed if you’re here.

Another neighborhood that goes above and beyond is the South End. If you take a stroll down any of the side streets in the fall, you’ll feel as though you’ve taken a day trip to Disney!

Hundreds of tourists visit each year to catch a glimpse of the spooky show. One house in particular is known for its politically-themed Halloween decor if you need a good laugh!

So Many Day Trips

If you’re worried about what to do when you visit a new place… don’t be. In a prime location on the East Coast, Boston makes it easy to take an abundance of day trips from the city.

Short, long, overnight: no matter how much time you’re spending here, there’s something for you. Well connected to other U.S. States and MA towns, Boston’s public transportation is pretty easy to navigate for newbies.
- Trips under an hour or so → If you want to keep it short and simple, there’s plenty to see. Take a quick boat trip to Provincetown, venture over to spooky Salem, or hop on the commuter rail to Newburyport, Rockport, or Gloucester.
- Longer day trips → Rent a car and drive through the Berkshires to see some of the best foliage in the country or pop over to New Hampshire for the day. It’s even possible to drive or take a train to Cape Cod, and then sail over to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard.
Boston Knows How To Do Oktoberfest

I did say Boston was a spirited city, and the fall really brings this out of people. The entire city celebrates Oktoberfest, almost to the extent Germans do!

This year alone, there are over 5 celebrations around Boston. Breweries decorated, people donning lederhosen and dirndls, oompah bands, and free-flowing beer: you’re sure to have a good time at any one of these!

For a day of family fun, Harvard Square celebrates its legendary Oktoberfest celebration each year with a music parade, sidewalk sales, and an array of food vendors and beer gardens.

Beautiful Hotels

Looking to stay directly in the city? Luckily for you, there are plenty of hotels that also offer some of the best views around Boston. Small boutique options facing tree-lined streets and luxurious towers with rooftop bars: you’re bound to enjoy some good foliage spotting.

So, I’ve convinced you to stay in Beacon Hill? The Liberty is one of the city’s most beautiful hotels with an eerie past. A former prison with an eye-catching lobby area, the hotel is on the outskirts of Beacon Hill and across from the Charles River — ideal for leaf-peeping!

The city’s newest opening has stirred some excitement. The first Raffles Hotel in the U.S. has found its home in Boston! With a sky-lounge, spa, and speakeasy, Raffles is a new hotspot in the Copley area (aka a foliage haven near Newbury Street!)

Prime Location

This one doesn’t need much explanation. As a central hub for travel, flights to Boston are usually pretty affordable if you get them early enough!

Flights in October can be found from Chicago to Boston for under $100 roundtrip, and from San Francisco, they’re as low as $220 roundtrip. As one of the busiest times of the year in the city, these flight prices are extremely reasonable to visit.

Playa San Juan del Sur

This is the main beach in the heart of San Juan del Sur and one of its most beautiful. There are endless options for food and entertainment both day and night right along the gorgeous sands. Plus, it’s only a 10-minute walk from La Santa Maria Resort.

Playa Escameca

This beach is the most secluded out of the three listed, but don’t let that stop you from visiting!

The coolest way to see this beach is by booking a horse riding tour. You’ll ride through the beautiful jungle, where you may even spot some howler monkeys!

Making your way out of the jungle you will come upon Playa Escameca, offering an incredible view of the Pacific. If you look across the water, you’ll even be able to catch some views of Costa Rica’s coast.

Affordable & Easy To Get To

One of the best parts about visiting San Juan del Sur is its affordability. If you want to save some serious cash, you can find hostel accommodations for under $15 a night, and you can opt for a private room in a hotel for under $100 a night easily.

Drinks and food are cheap too. You can easily find domestic beers for a few dollars each, and a meal at a decent restaurant shouldn’t run you more than $20 or so.

As for getting there, while it isn’t as easy as a direct flight straight to San Juan del Sur, it is an easy journey. The closest major airport to fly to will be Managua.

Americans will connect either through Houston, Miami, or Fort Lauderdale. Once you land in Managua, you’ll have a 2.5-hour drive to San Juan del Sur. You can get there by bus for just a few dollars, or for a more comfortable journey, you can book a private transfer for about $80 per person.

**One thing travelers should know is that you will be required to pay a $10 USD fee to get into the country. This is a tourist fee and must be paid in cash.**

Friendly & Laid-Back Atmosphere

You can’t help but feel like the wheel of time has slowed when walking the charming streets of San Juan del Sur. The bohemian vibe with colorful buildings and cute shops makes it feel like you are walking through a movie set.

Talking to the locals and other travelers, you’ll get the sense that nobody is ever in a rush, and you can truly unwind and relax during your time here.

All the restaurants you can visit are inviting and it’s totally fine (and expected) to make an evening of your meal.

Incredible Activities

If you get bored in San Juan del Sur something is wrong. There is so much to do here that you could easily stay for a month without ever feeling like you’ve run out of things to do. Best of all, La Santa Maria can help set you up with any tours or activities you want.

Some of our favorite activities included:

Surfing

San Juan del Sur is renowned for having some of the best surfing in the world. We went to Playa Remanzo with Tribu Surf Nicaragua for some private lessons and had the hang of it within the hour (we are newbies).

Horseback Riding

One of the coolest ways to take in a destination is on horseback, and Nicaragua is no exception.

We left La Santa Maria and within 30 minutes we were riding horses through the jungle on our way to Playa Escameca where we were able to watch the sunset over the gorgeous Pacific water.

During our ride, we saw some howler monkeys and even heard them in the distance as we left the area.

Cristo de La Misericordia

Overlooking San Juan del Sur is the Cristo de La Misericordia statue. It sits on top of a hill offering an incredible view of the town below.

You can take a taxi close to the top, or for more of a workout, you can start your walk from the bottom.

We opted for the hard way, and the views at the top were definitely worth the effort. If for no other reason, be sure to visit this spot for a great picture to take home with you!

Sunday Funday

While we didn’t get to experience this during our stay, if you are looking for a party, San Juan del Sur offers one of the best in Central America. Best of all, it is every week!

Sunday Funday is one of the most well-known party traditions in Central America and offers a nonstop party every week for travelers, locals, and expats to enjoy.

No fall vacation is complete without a hike, or, at the very least, a sightseeing tour. Luckily, Austria offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, complete with the type of scenery that most of us only get to see in postcards.

After the record-setting temperatures of the summer, travelers are finally getting to partake in their favorite sports and physical activities without having to battle with the extreme heat.

If that sounds like you, the first stop in your itinerary should be Austria.

Walk along the picturesque paths of Trin, cycle alongside the Danube, or trek through the North Austrian lakes.

Just don’t forget to stop every once and again to take in the fields, mountains, and valleys that’ll be dressed in hues of orange in honor of the start of the new season.

As the summer crowds dissipate, Austria becomes even more pleasant to experience.

Though Central Europe tends to garner more interest come fall, since there are fewer people taking September or October trips overall, you should still be able to enjoy a peaceful fall getaway in the country.

Even Vienna starts to quiet down once the August rush subsides, providing you with all the perks of visiting a big European city with none of the chaos.

New York’s subway system is convenient and efficient, making it a breeze for solo travelers to get around the city without spending a fortune on taxis or Ubers.

An unlimited 7-day MetroCard is $34, and individual rides on the subway are $2.90, so it’s affordable and easy to use public transportation once you get the hang of it.

New York is also one of the most walkable cities in the world, and you can often get around more easily and see more on your own two feet than by another form of transportation.

Solo female travel is on the rise, and we all want to chase the adventurous path towards our biggest travel desires. As a woman, there’s much more to consider when traveling alone than most people tend to realize.

From varying cultural norms worldwide to idealizations of what the word ‘woman’ means worldwide, it’s often difficult to navigate these specifics as a female traveler.

While there’s certainly much more of the world for me to see, I’ve traveled to 32 countries on the hunt for what makes a destination feel safe for solo female travelers. Backpacking through Spain and Portugal for over 6 weeks, I’ve found the happy medium.

It’s arduous to talk about Porto without feeling a rush of emotions as I recall spending 2 weeks solo within the charming city. While I did begin my travels solo, I ended up with a family of fellow travelers and a new place to call home.

A beautiful coastal city in the Northwest region of Portugal, Porto is an under-the-radar spot most solo travelers don’t seem to mention. With its rolling hills, medieval pathways, and vibrant Port history, the city is making its way out of the shadows and onto the passports of wanderers.

The City Itself

The moment I stepped foot in Porto, I felt an overwhelming feeling of being home. Every traveler is different, but I tend to seek out cities that are large enough to explore yet small enough to settle and get to know the people and its streets with ease.

Think Edinburgh and Seville; both remind me a lot of Porto in many ways: medieval vibes, cobblestone streets, small enough to feel homely. Traveling alone comes with many emotions, yet Porto makes it easy to navigate and become well acquainted with the way of life.

The city itself is divided into two sides: Ribeira (Porto) and Vila Nova de Gaia. Separated by a bridge, it’s fairly easy to explore both sides without getting lost.

Ribeira is the ‘main’ part of the city, filled with restaurants, local stores, and hotels. Vila Nova de Gaia is dotted with wine merchants, small churches, and food establishments.

Hostel Vibes

Depending on your comfort zone, hostels are always a surefire way to meet travelers with the same mindset. I stayed at OneFam Porto and couldn’t have had a better hostel experience. After staying in over 20 hostels worldwide, this one takes the cake.

Little did I know going in that I’d leave with several close friends who I’d end up backpacking the country with. With day and night activities, OneFam makes it easy to make new friends (without the pressure of constantly drinking).

Location Location Location

In the Northwest of the country, it’s convenient to explore other parts of Portugal with Porto as your base. About 3 hours from Lisbon, Porto is also close to some of the best surf towns.

During my stay, I visited the quaint town of Cascais, which was also a 3-hour Flix bus ride away (and is super close to Sintra if you want to explore the palace). If you’re into surfing, other notable spots to visit are Nazare and Peniche along the coast!

Friendly Faces

Some of the friendliest people I’ve met on my travels have been the Portuguese. Porto also attracts many expats opening their own businesses, so there’s always someone to meet!

I opted to ‘slow travel’ Porto- spending more than 2 weeks in the city. After scoping out a few local spots and visiting them more frequently, many of them began to recognize me and say hello. The locals enjoy helping tourists, especially when it comes to food and wine recs.

Due to its close proximity to other spots in Europe (and its safety), you’ll often find fellow solo travelers in the streets too. I went for an early morning breakfast in the city and came back with a new friend from Costa Rica: the beauty of traveling alone.

Less Discovered Caribbean Coast

Belize uses its own dollar, but the U.S. dollar is also widely accepted in the country. At the time of writing, one Belize dollar is worth about 50 cents U.S., making the conversion easy.

No Visa Required

One nice thing about Belize is that it isn’t too strict on visas for entry.

American citizens can enter and stay in Belize for up to 30 days without any kind of visa.

You can then extend that stay by visiting an immigration office and applying for a Belize Visitor’s Permit Extension. Often you will require proof of your intent to depart the country.

Belize offers similar visa-less entry to nationals of Canada and many European nations too.

Combine With A Trip To Mexico

Belize’s unique location and relatively small size mean you can easily tag on a few days visiting it while on a longer trip to Mexico.

The Mexican beach resort of Chetumal is right on the border with Belize, so you could quite easily enjoy a slow meander down the coast of Quintana Roo and then on into Belize, crossing the land border.

If you already have plans to visit this super popular part of Mexico, then venturing a little further south to escape the crowds could make Belize very appealing.
