Americans Are Traveling In Record Numbers To These 3 Lesser Known Destinations In Spain

When you think of Spain, it’s probably places like Andalusia, Catalonia, and the Balearics that first come to mind.

Concentrating some of the country’s top beaches and world-renowned landmarks, and boasting an unrivaled gastronomy and social scenes, these three regions are probably Spain’s leading regions for tourism.

Given their undeniable popularity, you’d expect them to also lead in numbers as far as year-on-year growth goes, especially among Americans. Surprisingly, they’re far from claiming the top spot.

The fastest-growing Spanish region in terms of overnight stays by U.S. tourists is, in fact, the lesser-known Extremadura, in the southwestern part of Spain:

Americans Now Flocking Into Extremadura

According to data published by Spain’s National Statistics Institute, Extremadura has registered a record-breaking 45 percent increase in the number of American visitors between January and July of this year, compared to the same period in 2024.

For comparison purposes, it outperforms the runner-up region, the Balearic Islands, which is home to popular beach destinations like Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza (up 14 percent), and it’s significantly ahead of the national average of only 2 percent.

In actual figures, 15,587 overnight stays fulfilled by Americans were recorded in 2025. This does not mean, of course, Extremadura is now more popular as a destination than, say, Barcelona or Seville, but it does signify it’s getting trendier at a surprisingly fast pace.

That being said, Extremadura is a vast region, steeped in history, and characterized by its millennia-old towns and mountainous terrain—so where could Americans possibly be headed?

City-specific visitation numbers haven’t been provided, but we can take a wild guess and assume Extremadura’s triad of culture-loaded cities:

Trujillo

One of Spain’s best-kept secrets, Trujillo is the perfect starting point for exploring Extremadura.

Perched on a hill overlooking verdant plains, it is distinguished by its postcard-ready Old Town, virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages, a sturdy, imposing Trujillo Castle, which dominates the idyllic townscape, and architectural charm.

The Church of Santa María la Mayor is a prime example of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, whereas Conquistadors’ Houses are a set of palatial complexes and dwellings that once belonged to explorers who first made landfall in the Americas.

Trujillo also feels quieter than your average Spanish destination, with smaller crowds and a slower-paced lifestyle, and if you love grilled meats, definitely add the Michelin Guide-listed Corral del Rey to your restaurant wishlist.

If you’re looking for something a little more, you know, medieval-themed to go with the overall aesthetics of the place, El Medievo, best known for its pork sirloin with Serena cheese sauce, and delicious torrija with cinnamon ice cream.

Cáceres

The shining gem in Extremadura’s crown, Cáceres, is widely considered a part of Spain’s ensemble of best-preserved medieval settlements.

Picture narrow cobblestone streets lined with centuries-old houses and taverns, pastoral plazas with storybook-like wishing wells, and monumental fortifications to top it off.

The Old Town, known locally as Ciudad Monumental, is entirely encircled by walls, built by the Moors upon their conquest of southwestern Spain, and it features a whopping 30 towers, several of which remain intact.

The most famous of these towers, Torre de Bujaco, commands a breathtaking panorama of the city’s red-bricked roofs and whitewashed Baroque cathedral, though if you’re hoping to soak up all that Old World allure whilst being in the center of the action, Plaza Mayor is where you should be headed.

Ringed by historic buildings, it is the best spot to grab some tapas and an off-season tinto de verano as you people-watch, and take in all the amazing details of the stone-built edifices that surround you—if we may add, the square’s Cafeteria Chocolat’s is home to the best pastries in town.

Mérida

Informally considered the ‘Rome of Spain’, and the capital of Extremadura, Mérida is one of the most referenced examples of a Roman-era city in Iberia.

It features theaters, temples, aqueducts, and even an urban layout that’s largely preserved from Ancient Times. Before it became the administrative center and cultural heart of Extremadura, it was formally the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania, and it feels nothing short of imperial indeed.

Its Roman Theater & Amphitheater, still hosting performances to this day, are among the best-preserved in Spain, and in the heart of the Historic Center, there stands a Temple of Diana, with surviving columns and an ornately carved main portal.

If you’re into museums, you can’t miss out on the National Museum of Roman Art, probably the best of its kind you’ll find in Spain, and the permanent home of Mérida’s fascinating archaeological finds, or the towering Catedral de Santa María de Mérida.

It’s distinguished as one of Spain’s oldest cathedrals still in use, having first served as a Roman temple, and its grandiose nave, and solemn interior still whisper tales of bygone civilizations and fallen empires.

When you think of Latin America, it’s probably tourism giants like Mexico, Argentina and Colombia that come to mind, and that’s only understandable:

Between one’s luxurious Caribbean resorts and ancient Mayan sites and the others’ charming colonial cities and delectable street food, they’re often a first-time visitor’s preferred pick when planning a trip to the Global South, and they’re undoubtedly extremely popular.

That being said, there’s been renewed interest in what’s the historically-overlooked central part of LatAm, stereotypically known for being a no man’s land full of unmapped and marred with underdevelopment––but to which extent is all of that true?

And if so, why is Costa Rica of all places breaking its own all-time arrival record and positioning itself among the key players in the subcontinent’s market?

On Costa Rica’s Popularity Rise

A name you’re likely to have come across at some point in your Instagram feed or travel searches, Costa Rica is a small, transitory country in Central America boasting a vast biodiversity and naturally Rich Coastlines––pun intended, and yes, in the plural:

Not only is a quarter of its landmass comprised of protected greenery, making the country a sanctuary for wildlife, it offers access to both the Caribbean and Pacific Coasts, with up-and-coming resort towns and crowd-free beaches galore.

For the first half of 2024, tourism in Costa Rica soared, already registering a 14.5% increase year-on-year, and it’s likely to grow further, especially with the abundance of cheap flights traveling to San Jose––roundtrip flights from Miami starting from a shockingly cheap $232.

According to Tourism Minister William Rodriguez, 92% of visitors to Costa Rica arrive by air, mainly from the U.S. and Canada, and this year, the number of U.S. vacationers, in particular, has increased by 18% compared to the same period in 2023.

At this rate, it looks set for a record-breaking 2024.

The question is, what is it about this lesser-known Latin gem that has got them so hooked?

This Is What Makes Costa Rica Actually Great

Costa Rica’s main attraction is its thriving nature, which is probably one of the most diverse in Latin America, despite the country’s less-advantageous size: other than the honey-colored beaches, we’re talking volcanoes, cloud and rainforests, and lake-dotted provinces.

It plays host to a number of LatAm’s most magnificent natural landmarks, including La Fortuna Waterfall, a vertiginous, fast-flowing drop emptying into shallow, swim-friendly pools and surrounded by lush scenery.

The waterfall is already worth flying all the way to Costa Rica to see, but wait until you see the trail that leads you there, with the towering trees, chirping of rare birds, and even the occasional sighting of endangered spider monkeys.

At the foot of the majestic Arenal Volcano, Mistico Arenal is yet another national park you can’t miss during an excursion to Costa Rica, mainly for the scenic freshwater lake and the iconic hanging bridges you will find here.

Nearby, also boasting views of the volcano, Monteverde has a 1.3-mile long trail lapping around a cloud forest, and if you’re keen on escaping into nature for longer than a day, Tortuguero is the perfect spot to base yourself:

This large eco-reserve is located in the heart of the jungle, and according to Booking.com, there are at least 22 accommodation options, ranging from cheap hostels to pricier four-star hotels.

As for the park itself, it provides guided wildlife sighting tours––watch out for those big-toothed crocs if you’re going near the water!––boat rides through winding, nature-made canals, and as it borders the Caribbean Coast, there are even beaches in the proximity of the tourist facilities.

How Does Costa Rica Fare As A Beach Destination?

Unlike the Mexican Caribbean or Colombia’s Northern Coast, Costa Rica is not primarily a beach destination.

While it does boast over 800 miles of coastline, the country is, in fact, best known for its numerous waterfalls and untouched landscape.

What we’re trying to say is, don’t come to Costa Rica expecting to find a hotel-packed Cancun or a lively Cartagena anywhere on the Pacific or Caribbean sides: there are coastal resorts, but they’re far more laid-back, and tourism is (much) smaller in scale––and that’s the beauty of it.

Vacationing in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica’s best-loved resort district on the Central Pacific Coast, you can expect truly unspoiled public beaches completely unclaimed by hospitality giants, more wildlife refuges, including a butterfly atrium and crocodile lagoon, and tourist-friendly treks.

There are some bars and nightlife venues scattered along the shoreline, but Tulum-goers should bear in mind this is not a major party destination––that’s not to say you can’t find the odd beach bar or entertainment venue within a short distance of your jungle retreat.

Accommodation is considerably less expensive here, too: an overnight stay at Hotel Plaza Yara, a four-star listing 800 meters from Manuel Antonio’s main beach, will set you back by $113 per night, while more-modest alternative Hospedaje Colibri costs as little as $23 to book.

Budget-Friendly Adventures

Costa Rica is a small nation, roughly the size of West Virginia, making it incredibly easy to explore, whether you’re traveling solo on a road trip through the jungle-dominated hinterland or being accompanied by a guide.

As smooth a ride as Costa Rica may be, compared to its Central American counterparts, anyway, we would still recommend the latter:

By booking a guided tour, you get to optimize your time, visit hidden gems that wouldn’t normally feature on mainstream travel brochures––and only locals have heard of––and maximize your safety when heading deep into the rainforest.

Departing from Costa Rican capital San Jose, there are countless activities to choose from this Arenal Volcano, Hot Springs & Zip Lining Tour (with meals) from $179, to the top-rated Tortuga Island Tour with Snorkeling and Lunch––warm seas and turquoise waters from as cheap as $115!

From La Fortuna, another popular base for tourists in Costa Rica, you can join a nighttime tour walking through the rainforest for the best possible chance of spotting elusive animals in their natural habitat, starting from $42.50.

Alternatively, in order to beat the crowds, book this $48 early-bird Arenal Volcano Tour with lunch and a hot spring visit added––running on a duration of only 6 hours, and avoiding the challenging sections of the hike, it is perfect for mobility-challenged individuals, or inexperienced trekkers in general.

Costa Rica Is One Of The Safest Destinations In LatAm

Safety is a major concern for Americans traveling in Latin America.

There is definitely a level of exaggeration on American media’s part, but we won’t sugarcoat it and paint LatAm as a perfectly safe destination: local crime levels are generally higher than most U.S. states or Europe, and extra precaution is needed when venturing into certain areas.

In Costa Rica’s case, however, safety issues are not as prominent.

That is because the country has a long-standing reputation of being a ‘neutral’ zone in the Central American strip, with a stable constitutional democracy and fast-developing economy setting it apart from nearby dictatorships and failing states.

Crime in tourism hotspots is not unheard of, yet it is by no means widespread, much like the Mexican Caribbean or Punta Cana.

The U.S. State Department itself classes Costa Rica as a moderately safe destination, having added it to Level 2 of its Travel Advisory, meaning Americans are not discouraged from visiting––on the other hand, they must exercise increased caution due to crime.

They add the Costa Rican authorities provide ‘additional security resources’ in areas tourists frequent, and by ‘increased caution‘, they mean avoiding flashing valuable items like expensive jewelry and electronic devices and booking activities through reputable providers only.

Between January and November of 2022, Mexico welcomed an estimated 18.4 million tourists through its international airports. That number represents an 8% increase from the same period in 2019, and a whopping 52% increase over 2021 arrivals. Americans alone made up 11.7 million of those international tourists. This is an increase of 30% in 2021 numbers and up 24% from 2019.

Home to Mariachi music and raicilla (the local drink), visitors get swept away in the city’s vibrant neighborhooods and tourist attractions while marveling at the stunning mountain landscapes.

This resort town has lots of all-inclusives to choose from, making it accessible to families, couples, and budget solo travelers. It’s no wonder that Puerto Vallarta is one of the most popular spots to vacation in Mexico.

When to visit: Most tourists to Los Cabos visit during the high season of December – April when the weather is ideal. Travelers looking to avoid the crowds but still have nice weather should go between May and June.

Mexico City

Mexico City is one of the oldest cities in North America. It is also the fifth most populated city in the world. It is a great destination for tourists looking to immerse themselves in Mexican culture. With over 150 museums and galleries, sprawling public squares and parks, ancient Aztec ruins, and vibrant neighborhoods, tourists could spend a lifetime exploring all Mexico City has to offer.

Dominican Republic Sets New Tourism Record And Now Has Over 100 All Inclusive Resorts

Following the trend of several other sunny destinations, the Dominican Republic has just set another all-time tourism record. In August of this year, the Dominican Republic welcomed over 620,000 tourists, shattering its previous 2019 record. World-renowned beaches spotted with luxury all inclusives keep visitors coming back to this Caribbean gem year after year.

How Much Has Tourism Grown?

The Dominican Republic – especially Punta Cana – is becoming a staple on every tropical traveler’s wish list. New resorts are constantly springing up, and visitor counts continue to outpace previous years. The last year before the pandemic, 2019, was the country’s biggest year ever for tourism. However, 2022 has consistently been bigger. Air arrivals from January through August 2019 amounted to 4,664,036 visitors. This year saw an increase of about 5.15%, with total air arrivals for the same months amounting to 4,904,160 visitors.

Who Is Visiting?

Americans are the biggest market for the Dominican Republic, followed by Canadians. From January to August of this year, about 1.64 million Americans have flown to the Dominican Republic, taking up a 38.4% share of all international air arrivals. In second place is Canada, which has sent just over 384,700 air arrivals to the country. Hotel occupancy rates have been high all year, with an average rate of 72.4% between January and July. July was the most-booked month, with a hotel occupancy rate of 77.4%.

What’s Special About The Dominican Republic?

The Resorts

The Dominican Republic draws many different types of travelers. One of the most popular ways people visit the country is by staying at an all-inclusive resort. Most of the popular resorts are located in Punta Cana, which, like Cancun, is becoming an area known for its incredible beaches and a vast range of all-inclusive resorts. The Dominican Republic is home to over 100 all inclusives, and Punta Cana claims over 70 of them.

Travel Off Path recently looked at Punta Cana all-inclusives from January 14^th through January 21^st to get an idea of average costs for this coming winter. We found that, on average, Punta Cana’s 4-star all-inclusives were $239 per night, and there were 5 properties available for the dates chosen. For 5-star all-inclusives, the average nightly price was $422 per night, and there were 63 properties available. Compared to another all-inclusive hotspot, Cancun, the prices are quite favorable.

The Beaches

Punta Cana’s beaches are not as developed as Cancun’s, but that’s not a criticism. Punta Cana offers a better chance of finding a secluded place along the beach to call your own for an afternoon. The most popular beach is Bavaro Beach, which gives travelers a chance to feel like they are walking right into a postcard due to its appeal to the eye. For travelers taking advantage of an all-inclusive property, there are endless options dotting the beaches in Punta Cana.

The Weather

Many travelers head to the Caribbean every year to escape the cold for a week or two over winter. Indeed, the Dominican Republic is the perfect escape, and the weather in the most popular region, Punta Cana, is ideal in January. The average temperature is 76.6°F (24.8°C), and there are typically only 11 days of rain. Likewise, the ocean is inviting at an average temperature of 80°F (27°C), and the sun dutifully shines over the clear-blue waters each day. It can get a bit humid, with an average humidity of 76%, but with a bit of shade and a cold drink, most travelers would never notice.

Getting There

Most travelers to the Dominican Republic fly into Punta Cana Airport. Presently, Punta Cana does not have quite as many direct flights as Cancun. Still, airlines are noticing Punta Cana’s increase in popularity and have begun offering more nonstop flights. As a result, for a getaway in January, twenty U.S. cities will fly directly to Punta Cana (PUJ). Canadians will have eight cities flying directly to PUJ. Record Amount Of Seaweed Washing Up On Miami Beaches

Tons of sargassum seaweed have been invading the most popular beaches, including top destinations like Cancun and Puerto Rico, and ruining travelers’ vacations— or at least their beach expectations.

These algae have also arrived in South Florida. Miami Beach has been one of the places where the sargassum has covered its white sand and pristine water, annoying tourists with its smell and unpleasant presence.

Only in June, more than 24 tons of this seaweed were collected across the Atlantic coast, a record high compared to the previous year.

NBC News Channel interviewed beachgoers in Miami that weren’t impressed by the sargassum. Tana Suarez had spent some time on the beach this week and tried to swim but said: “It’s all over the place. We tried to go farther but the farther you get the more seaweed you’re gonna get all over.”

Gigi Rodriguez, another frequent visitor said: “I’ve never seen it like this. Never.” Seasonal seaweed has been reaching the coast of Florida for a long time and has been significantly growing since 2011, but it has considerably increased its size and presence this year.

The large amounts of sargassum across the Atlantic have been causing concern among authorities and experts worldwide.

What Travelers Must Know About Seaweed In Miami

The Miami-Dade county recently published guidelines and relevant information about the sargassum seaweed on their official website. These are the most important facts and recommendations for travelers:
- Seaweed season in Miami is from March through October.
- Coastal areas worldwide experience two tides per day. The second tide arrives in the afternoon and, if there is wind, it can bring the seaweed to the shoreline.
- Authorities and workers at Miami-Dade Parks tackle the sargassum very early in the morning before beachgoers arrive. So, if you are in Miami, the best time to go to the beach would be in the morning after the seaweed has been cleaned out.
- According to experts, the great sargassum belt could be the “new norm” and should be expected in the following years. Miami lovers should consider the sargassum season when planning their trips to this fascinating destination.
- The seaweed itself cannot harm people, but small creatures living in it can cause rashes or blisters on the skin. Travelers should avoid touching it.
- When sargassum decomposes it gives off hydrogen sulfide, a substance that smells like rotten eggs and can also irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. Visitors with asthma or breathing illnesses should take precautions although the current levels of hydrogen sulfide at the beach are not considered harmful.
- Special permits are required to manage this seaweed on the beach since it could affect turtle nesting season which takes place during the same period. Before the cleaning operation of the 17 miles of coastline begins every morning, the Miami Dade County Parks’ Sea Turtle team must survey and mark sea turtle nests for their protection.
- The sargassum cannot be removed from the water before it reaches the shoreline. The water is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Environmental Resource Management and the “The Sargassum Fishery Management Plan” approved in 2003 prohibits and limits the seaweed harvest.
- The seaweed removed is transported to a special landfill where it dries and is composted and recycled into fertilizer.
- Radical measures to avoid or remove sargassum from the coastline cannot be taken considering that this seaweed provides crucial habitat for many species including sea turtles.
Travelers must consider these algae when planning their vacations and understand that the sargassum belt is here to stay. It not only affects the coast of Florida. Other destinations like Cancun, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Barbados have beaches covered by this seaweed as well.

It is an international matter and organizations across the world, including the United Nations, are working on sustainable solutions to contain and reduce seaweed growth.
