When it comes to international travel, Americans’ go-to destinations are pretty well-established by now, with Mexico and Canada sitting comfortably at number 1 and 2 respectively, partly due to their many cultural and natural wonders and partly due to their geographical proximity.

However, what about the places Americans are crossing oceans to visit – where do those rank in comparison to one another?

The newest Outbound Survey of International Travelers released by the National Travel and Tourism Office shed some light on this very question by releasing the official ranking of the most visited overseas destinations by U.S. travelers during the first two quarters of 2023.

One interesting fact to note is that the countries you’ll see below are not only this year’s favorite among North American travelers, but they’re also being visited in never-seen-before numbers that far surpass the traffic we’ve seen before the pandemic.

Here’s why:

5. Spain

Having welcomed over 867,000 U.S. tourists, Spain saw an 18% increase in this demographic compared to its pre-pandemic highs.

Between the architectural wonders of Barcelona, the historic charm of Seville, and the sun-kissed beaches of the Costa del Sol, travelers have a lot to experience in Spain, a country whose passion for life is evident in every single corner.

So, while there, try to take in some of the region’s warm, lively atmosphere, either through the buzzing festivals of La Tomatina and Running of the Bulls, the spirited flamenco performances, or the world-class culinary scene.

4. Dominican Republic

For those who doubted the Dominican Republic’s meteoric rise in popularity this past year, the fact that this stunning Caribbean country is the only non-European destination on today’s list goes to show just how much Americans have grown to love this previously overlooked gem.

With its pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and warm, genuine atmosphere, the Dominican Republic has become the ultimate place to be for those seeking sun and excitement, especially this time of year.

Here you can explore the crystal-clear waters of Punta Cana, the historical allure of Santo Domingo, or the captivating rhythms of Bachata in Santiago de los Caballeros – one thing’s for sure, you’ll leave every single one of your stops with a renewed sense of excitement and appreciation for life.

3. France

Though impressive in their own right, these numbers don’t seem all that surprising – that’s because the country is so rich in culture, history, and breathtaking sights that you’ll be hard-pressed to find someone who wouldn’t want to experience it all firsthand if given a chance.

Italy’s unshakable allure isn’t concentrated in a single region of the country.

1. Yucatán, Mexico

It kind of had to be, didn’t it? The Mexican state of Yucatán has long been a favorite of American travelers and that looks set to continue into next year.

From pretty beach towns like Sisal and Chicxulub Puerto, to the mysterious and beautiful Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Uxmal, Yucatán has something for everyone.

The colorful, cobbled streets of Merida are a great place to base yourself while you explore this stunning place.

And the whole region is about to get easier to visit thanks to new flights direct from the United States into the brand-new Tulum International Airport in the neighboring state Quintana Roo, as well as the introduction of the Maya Train which will connect them.

2. Gizo, Solomon Islands

This location is for those who truly love to get away from it all when they travel.

Gizo is a small town located on Ghizo Island in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands.

This island paradise offers a stunning place to relax and unwind and has relatively good access, considering how remote it is – you can fly into a small airstrip on Nusa Tupe Island and then hop on a short boat ride to Gizo from there.

Gizo also offers unrivaled bird and wildlife watching, amazing diving, and several wrecks of machinery from the Second World War that you can visit close-up.

3. Stavanger, Norway

Nothing can spoil a trip quite like falling victim to a scam.

They’re nothing new to traveling, and the experienced among us probably believe that we know many of the main ones, but it always pays to stay up to speed with the most common scams of the present moment.

Insurance company InsureandGo recently put together a list of the most common travel scams by analyzing the data of millions of users on the social media site Reddit.

The data, which was correct as of September 2023, shows a wide range of scams that are in operation around the world that could really spoil a trip you’ve been so looking forward to.

So, here are the top trending scams and how to avoid them:

Taxi Driver Scams

These scams are some of the most commonplace all over the world.

Tricks such as not having a meter and then overcharging you massively for a journey, taking an unnecessarily long route in order to increase the fare, and even driving away with your luggage were all found in the data that InsureandGo put together.

I think almost everyone who has done any serious traveling will have had a taxi or tuk-tuk driver attempt some sort of scam on them; it’s just part of the game sadly.

How to avoid:

Where possible, try to get official taxis that are licensed correctly – if something seems a bit ‘off’ about the taxi you’re considering getting into, then it probably is.

Always make sure the driver has a working meter. If not, it’s a good idea to agree a fee for your journey before it begins.

Using ride apps such as Uber with good built-in safety features can help you avoid scams. However, they are not totally immune to them.

Kind Strangers

I’m ashamed to say that in my younger years, I once fell for this kind of scam myself.

The premise is simple: a friendly stranger approaches you and either offers to show you around or wants to speak with you to practice their English.

It appears that they don’t immediately want anything from you, so it’s easy to not feel threatened.

Eventually, they might see if you’d like to grab a coffee or some food at a nearby restaurant – however the scam is the fact that this ‘kind stranger’ is working on commission for the establishment and will leave before you get grossly overcharged for whatever was ordered.

I was lucky that I managed to haggle the high price down a little when I was stung by this one, but the scam is still out there.

How to avoid:

It’s best to be vigilant when being approached by strangers in places that are unfamiliar to you.

It may seem a harsh outlook to disregard anyone who seems to want to befriend you, as meeting new people is one of the joys of traveling. However, try to have your wits about you.

If you are invited into an unfamiliar establishment in this way, it’s best to politely decline and say you have other plans.

Restaurant Scams

The temptation to try authentic restaurants that offer a more genuine experience is real when traveling, and it’s no bad thing.

However, be careful of restaurants pulling commonly experienced scams in this research, such as extortionate mandatory tips, charging for appetizers you never asked for, or simply overcharging for basic items.

Of course, you expect to spend a certain amount of money when dining abroad, especially in touristy areas, but always have a concept of what things should cost by doing some research beforehand.

How to avoid:

I like to heavily research dining options on the fly while traveling.

I usually compare their reviews on multiple sources (Google, Tripadvisor and more) and read a few of them to get a general feel of what the place is like.

Just spending five minutes doing this before deciding can help you avoid such scams.

Another great method is to get recommendations from fellow travelers who have already visited the place you are headed.

Photo Opportunities

This one is probably less of a scam and more a general rule of street performers – if you take a photo of a street performer or have your photo taken with one, don’t expect it to be free.

It seems the users of Reddit have been caught out by choosing to do this and then being surprised when the performer tries to force you to pay.

Remember that anyone in the street providing entertainment is not doing it for fun; they’re doing it to try and earn a living.

How to avoid:

Don’t take photos of street performers is the obvious answer, unless of course you are happy to throw them a few dollars so you can enjoy their show.

Don’t expect anything for free from people who are out there trying to earn money for themselves.

Free Gifts

If anyone offers you any kind of gift while you’re traveling, then be cautious, as this is a common scam.

It can involve small and insignificant items like flowers or bracelets, but it’s very rare that these free gifts are actually free.

More often than not, you may be pressured into giving the person money or donating to them because of the ‘free’ gift.

How to avoid:

Quite simply, don’t accept any gifts from anyone you don’t know while traveling.

Always remain polite and give people a smile, but there’s nothing wrong with refusing an offer of any kind from a stranger.

It sometimes really helps to make an effort to learn a few words of the language of where you are visiting too, to make your refusal clearer.

Khuvsgul Lake, otherwise known as the “Blue Pearl of Mongolia,” is a must-see, especially for nature lovers looking to take the pictures of a lifetime.

With all that said, travelers lucky enough to make it here have more to enjoy than just the pretty sights.

Historical attractions like the Erdene Zuu Monastery and the ruins of Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, offer a glimpse into the country’s captivating past, leaving travelers with a deepened sense of understanding of the local culture.

If you want to experience something truly unique, though, you’ll want to make a stop at the Flaming Cliffs, a paleontological treasure trove where the very first dinosaur eggs were discovered.

India

Why Hotels Are Cheaper Than Airbnb In Most Destinations, According To New Report

Airbnb has been getting a bad rap recently. In 2021, Barcelona became the first European city to effectively ban Airbnb. A cascade of cities and even counties followed.

Then, earlier this month, New York followed suit by banning booking service platforms like Airbnb from offering short-term unregistered rentals in the city.

And to add insult to injury, now a new report from Which? has found that Airbnb’s aren’t actually any cheaper than hotels in most destinations anyway.

The study found that a one-bedroom short-term let from a platform such as Airbnb is more expensive than a hotel room in 38 of the 50 destinations surveyed.

This might come as a surprise to many because when they first launched, private rental sites such as Airbnb and Vrbo offered a cheaper alternative to booking a hotel in many in-demand cities.

These are the destinations where the differences were the biggest:

Big Savings In Capital Cities

Hotels were cheaper than Airbnb in every capital city included in the investigation.

The following 7 capital cities are a clear example of this:

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in Amsterdam is $224. The average price of a hotel room is $143.

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in Singapore is $174. The average price of a hotel room is $100.

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in Greater London is $200. The average price of a hotel room is $126.

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in Dubai is $157. The average price of a hotel room is $87.

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in Barcelona is $172. The average price of a hotel room is $116.

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in Hong Kong is $121. The average price of a hotel room is $65.

The average price of a one-bedroom Airbnb in San Fransisco is $201. The average price of a hotel room is $157.

New York, New York

Because the effective banning of Airbnb in New York has been such a big media focus in the past couple of months, the study also looked at the costs of hotels versus Airbnb in New York City.

It found that not only were Airbnb’s in the city more expensive than equivalent hotel rooms but also that many New York options still listed on the site are actually illegal.

You are no longer allowed to rent out a whole home for less than 30 days in New York. This means that the only legal Airbnb options in the city are those where the owner resides in the property and where the property is officially registered for short-term rental.

This change is expected to drive up nightly rates in the city further.

The trend of banning Airbnb and other short-term rental sites is only set to continue. From October 1 Scotland will also introduce a restrictive licensing scheme for short-term lets, for example.

Are Hotel Rooms Really Better?

When asked to respond to the study, Airbnb said “This data is wrong and based on flawed methodology” because private lets generally have more space than hotel rooms.

And it is worth mentioning that when you book an Airbnb, you will typically have more space than a hotel room. But this isn’t always the case.

You will also often have a kitchen or cooking facilities, which means you could save money in the long run if you compare the costs of eating out with the costs of cooking for yourself.

It is ideal if you enjoy cooking for yourself on vacation but not important if you feel eating out is part of the fun of the trip.

Finally, the Which? study concludes that a bigger Airbnb may still be better value for a group as the cost of a larger let is often cheaper than the combined cost of several hotel rooms. Many families also prefer the space and flexibility offered by Airbnb.

Many are in Eastern Europe, which is usually considered the cheapest area in Europe to travel and spend time. But you may be surprised to discover that two of the destinations are in the heart of popular Spain.

Galicia, Spain

Located in the northwest of Spain, along the Atlantic coast, Galicia has all the charm of the country’s more popular destinations such as Andalusia and the Costa Brava, but on a more attractive budget.

With a population of over 2.5 million, Galicia is a vast region famous for its wild beaches, lighthouses, and verdant green landscapes.

Peak summer travel season is just weeks away, and tourists are beginning to get excited about the epic trips they have planned.

With more tourists than ever expected to travel abroad this year, and most trips already booked, we now have access to new data showing this year’s travel trends.

A new report from travel insurance company Squaremouth breaks down info on the destinations, expenses, and demographics for travel in summer 2023.

Higher Average Trip Costs

According to Squaremouth’s report, which analyzed data from thousands of travel insurance policies that were purchased for this summer, travelers are spending more.

For the third year in a row, travel costs have increased, making summer 2023 the most expensive year to date.

On average, travelers are spending $9,333 on trips this summer. That price is nearly 7% higher than in 2022 and 27% higher than 2021’s costs.

Boomers Are Back

In 2021 when Covid was more prevalent and older people were at a higher risk of health complications, baby boomers only made up 29% of Squaremouth’s travelers.

Last year that increased to 33%, and now it has risen to 40%. The percentage of Gen Xers traveling this summer is second highest at 22%, followed by Gen Z at 15% and Millennials at just 12%.

However, it is important to note that the data is based on information gathered from people who have purchased travel insurance policies from Squaremouth. So while it is generally interesting information, it is only one piece of the puzzle.

Are millennials traveling less? Not necessarily – they could be purchasing insurance from other companies or not buying it at all.

Additionally, a higher percentage of baby boomers traveling does not mean that fewer younger generations are packing their bags; it simply means that the proportion of boomers has increased at a higher rate.

Travelers Are Headed Abroad

A whopping 76% of Squaremouth customers are headed abroad this summer. One region, in particular, accounted for 42% of all travel insurance sales – Europe. In fact, 8 of the top 10 international destinations are in Europe.

So where are all these travelers headed? By breaking down the percentage of travel insurance policy sales by destination, Squaremouth has reported the 10 most popular international destinations.

10. Norway

Stunning Norway is the 10^th most popular international destination, with 2.2% of travelers headed to the Scandinavian Adventureland.

With dramatic scenery, terrific cultural festivals, and some of the best places to view the Northern Lights, Norway is becoming more and more popular with American tourists.

9. Ireland

A long-time favorite destination for U.S. tourists, Ireland frequently receives accolades for its multitude of travel opportunities.

8. Germany
