This Cruise Ship Is Making It Possible For Digital Nomads To Live At Sea – But What’s The Catch?

A cruise ship might not seem like the ideal home for a digital nomad.  With small cabins and notoriously bad internet service, it can be hard to imagine living aboard a cruise ship for any length of time, much less getting any work done.  But Miray Cruises is launching a brand new kind of ship to do just that.

Their MV Gemini ship is being remodeled to become a long-term floating home geared towards remote workers.  The ship will set sail in the fall of this year and will visit every continent throughout its journey, taking along over 1,000 lucky passengers.

    Onboard Amenities

The company has gone to great lengths to adapt the ship to meet the needs of digital nomads. Along with high-speed WiFi throughout, the ship is equipped with a full-scale business center, offices, meeting rooms, and a business library and lounge. There is also a 24-hour hospital with medical visits at no extra cost. Passengers will be treated to more spacious cabins and onboard community-building initiatives for a more comfortable long-term experience.

Due to the extended nature of the cruise, there will also be longer stops at various ports throughout the journey.  With 208 overnight stops out of the 375 planned ports, guests will have more time to explore onshore.

In addition to these welcome changes, passengers can expect all of the typical cruise amenities, such as a swimming pool, wellness center, sundeck, auditorium, spa, and salon.

    Where Will It Go?

A better question might be, “Where won’t it go?”  The ship is set to embark on a 130,000-mile journey, stopping at hundreds of ports along the way.  There are 135 countries included on the itinerary, spanning all 7 continents.  It is the ultimate around the world sailing trip.

The ship will stop at several ports throughout the Caribbean, sail the entire coastline of South America, up the west coast of the United States before hitting both Hawaii and then Alaska, and then over to Asia.  It will then make stops in Japan and South Korea before continuing throughout Southeast Asia, then around Australia and New Zealand.  Finally, it will pass India, loop the entire coastline of Africa, then make its way up to the Mediterranean and Europe.

    How Much Does It Cost?

Cruises can range from very affordable to quite expensive, depending on the location, amenities, and level of luxury that you desire. You might think a cruise around the world would lean towards the expensive side, and for that, you would be both right and wrong.  The Life at Sea Cruise is not a cheap vacation.  However, taking all factors into account, it could come up to less than your life at home.

A cruise ship sailing at sea, seen from a tropical beach

The lowest-priced room, a standard inside cabin at 130 square feet, comes up to $30,000 per person per year. That’s around $2500 a month, which is lower than the average rent for major U.S. cities like Los Angeles and New York.

It’s also not much more than what many remote workers already pay for coliving or digital nomad groups that move around month to month.  On top of all that, this is meant to be both long-term and all-inclusive, so there are no grocery bills, utilities, or other similar costs people typically spend in their home country.

Full service breakfast on a cruise ship balcony

Prices do vary by cabin, with the largest being a 322-square foot balcony room at $110,000 per person for the year.  The prices are more ideal for couples, but single travelers do get a small discount – 15% off the double occupancy rate.  Financing options are available, but a pretty hefty downpayment of $45,000 is required.  Although the monthly rate could be enough for some to handle, the downpayment might be a dealbreaker.

Cruise ship balconies with a tropical shoreline in the background

    What’s The Catch?

The cost, itinerary, and amenities seem very straightforward. However, there is one very big catch.  Travelers must commit to the entire journey – not one, not two, but three years. Yes, the ship will sail for a solid three years, and passengers are expected to sign on for the whole time. Though there is an option to split your cabin with other passengers (somewhat like a timeshare), even one year aboard a cruise ship is a huge commitment for most to make. Another drawback is that the Life at Sea sets sail from Istanbul on November 1, 2023, leaving very little time to get your affairs in order.

Cruise vacations are making an incredible post-pandemic recovery and are becoming more and more popular with travelers. The influx of new ships, new destinations, and new ports means more cruisers and, with that, inevitably, more mishaps. It is always important to be prepared for anything, especially when traveling, but do you know what to do if you miss your cruise ship? What are your rights, and can you get a refund?

a larger white cruise ship waits for passengers on a long wooden pier

Plenty of bad things can happen on a cruise vacation. Accidents and natural disasters can derail a planned sailing. Bad weather or outbreaks of sickness onboard can ruin a vacation for a whole shipload of people. While many bad scenarios are out of your control, there is one common misfortune that typically is not. Missing a cruise ship’s departure is usually avoidable, but it still happens.

Imagine standing at the dock, watching your ship sail away without you. What if you are in a foreign country, and all your belongings are slowly sailing away from you? Cruisers should always be prepared for this situation and take precautions to avoid it. They should, however, also be prepared for what to do if they do miss their ship and know if they are entitled to a refund.

What To Do If You Miss Your Cruise Ship

If you find yourself on the pier running after your ship, you know you’re not in a good situation. Unless you are coming from a shore excursion booked through the ship, it is unlikely that the ship will wait for you. If you’ve tried contacting the ship and they’ve confirmed you cannot board, there are a few things you can do.

a group of passengers try not to miss their cruise ship by walking down the pier towards two large cruise ships

First, locate a port agent and explain your situation. Oftentimes, the ship’s crew will have located your passport prior to your missed departure and left it with the port agent. If they do have your passport, you’ll have a few options.

a female tourists looks at a map while standing next to a large white cruise ship

Sometimes it is possible to make travel arrangements to meet the ship at its next destination. The cost to do this will come at the passenger’s expense. That means that any ground transportation, hotel stays, and airfare to get there are up to you. If you booked your cruise through a travel agent, they will be able to help with the logistics.

A large white cruise ship sails through the waters next to a small boat. there are mountains and an orange sky in the distance

One exception for passengers who miss their cruise departure while on a shore excursion booked through the ship. In that instance, the cruise line will make arrangements and pay for passengers to meet up with the ship at its next destination.

15 March 2019 Cozumel, Mexico: Royal Caribbean “Harmony of the Seas” is moored at her Puerta Maya Cruise Ship Terminal berth as her guests come and go for excursions, shopping, and food / drink. Harmony of the Seas and her sister ship Allure of the Seas hold the record for largest crew ship in operation. Her maiden voyage was 29 May 2016. The ship is 362.12 m (1,188.1 ft) long with a beam of 66 m (217 ft) and weighs 226,963 Gross Tons. She has 18 decks, carries 6,780 passengers maximum and a crew of 2,300 at a cruise speed of 22 knots (41 km/h; 25 mph)

If meeting your missed ship at the next port is not an option, you’ll need to make plans to get home at your own expense. Passengers need to contact the cruise line to make arrangements to have any belongings shipped back home and will be responsible for the cost of doing so.

In the event that your passport was not left with the port agent (assuming you are in a foreign country), you’ll need to locate the nearest embassy of your home country. Officials at the embassy will help you with a new passport. Again, the expense of doing this, and for your onward journey, is up to you.

    Will You Get A Refund?

Missing your cruise ship is a costly mistake. While it is best to avoid doing it in the first place, you should know beforehand what you are entitled to if you do miss your ship. While a full refund is likely out of the question, policies will differ between companies. The reason for a missed departure can also make a difference.

a woman holds her hand over her eyes as she talks on a white cell phone looking upset

Don’t count on a refund if you missed your initial departure due to delayed or canceled flights, with one exception. If you booked your flight through the cruise line, they will work with you to get you to the ship or possibly provide you with a travel credit. Either way, contact the cruise company to see what the options are.

Cruise ship in beautiful cove with sailboats

If you miss your ship because of illness, you could be eligible for a future cruise credit if enough notice is given. Each cruise company has a different policy, so be sure to check this before you book.

Passengers who miss their ship because they simply didn’t make it in time are less likely to receive compensation. Regardless of the situation, always call your cruise line and ask what the options are. They might be willing to work with you and offer some sort of compensation to ease the blow of missing out. Cruise lines will sometimes refund the cost of pre-booked activities or other onboard components that have already been paid for.

Tips To Avoid Missing The Boat

The best thing to do is to avoid missing your cruise in the first place. There are many things cruisers can do to ensure this won’t happen. Here are a few top tips:

Puerto Vallarta - Mexico: This Cruise Ship from the United States just arrived in Puerto Vallarta in Mexico and many of the hundreds of visitors are coming ashore and many inquiring regarding local tours as musicians wander around the newly arrived tourist and on this March day with all the excitement in the air it is a beautiful day under the cloudy sky.
    • Book flights through the cruise line – they’ll be more likely to help you out in the event of delay or cancellation
    • Arrive at least one day early for your cruise departure
    • Set your clocks to “ship time” if you are traveling through different time zones
    • Know your scheduled “all aboard” times and get there well in advance
    • Book your on-shore excursions through the cruise company
    • Contact the ship if you are running late
    • Purchase travel insurance with trip interruption coverage. Be sure to read the fine print, as not all policies will cover a missed departure
    • Don’t overdo it on excursions. Don’t travel too far (unless you are on a ship-sponsored tour). If you plan on drinking, take extra precautions to ensure you’ll make it back to the ship on time

In summary, missing your cruise ship can ruin your vacation. Plan ahead for the worst-case scenario. Always take the necessary measures to ensure you make the boat on time. If you miss your ship you likely won’t receive a refund. Regardless, it is always a good idea to ask for some sort of compensation.

Disney Cruise Line is finally all set to launch its newest cruise ship, having taken receipt of the vessel during the week. When it comes to travel, few experiences can match the magic, wonder and memories that are provided by a Disney vacation, with fun for all the family all but a guarantee – and the experience is just as magical out on the open seas as it is at a Disney theme park

Whether a Disneyphile, a cruise lover or simply a wanderlust traveler, the addition of a new ship to Disney’s fleet has something for all types of travelers to get excited about.

Here’s what travelers can expect from Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, including what kind of amenities it will have on board, which destinations it will be sailing to and how the magic of the happiest place on Earth is recreated on the waves.

Disney’s Latest Ship – Information For Travelers

Founded in 1995, Disney Cruise Line might not be the biggest name in the cruise industry, but it might just be the most loved. Sailing a number of different routes, such as along the Pacific Coast, the Caribbean and Europe, Disney Cruise Line currently has four ships in its fleet – Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy – but very soon, its total number of vessels will grow to five.

After years of waiting for the completion of the building process and test sailing events, Disney Cruise Line finally took ownership of their latest mega-ship, Disney Wish, which is the first of several planned Triton class ships for the company. The ship is scheduled to arrive at Port Canaveral on June 20th, before setting sail later on this year – much to the delight of Disney and cruise fans across the country.

As one may expect, Disney touches can be found all over the ship, from subtle motifs to immersive experiences. Each of the ship’s staterooms are “equipped with innovations that ensure the ultimate in comfort and relaxation for Guests of all ages”, and allow guests to relax in the utmost comfort whilst still tastefully carrying on the Disney theme throughout.

On board Wish, guests can expect to receive the royal Disney treatment. Kids both big and small can look forward to the world’s first Frozen-themed theatrical dining experience, where they will be treated to musical numbers by Elsa and Olaf whilst enjoying hearty Norwegian-inspired cuisine, all in honor of celebrating the engagement of Queen Anna and Kristoff. If that doesn’t float your boat, there’s also the Marvel cinematic dining experience, where you can look forward to meeting your favorite superheroes whilst enjoying top-quality cuisine.

The ship is packed full of things to do for people of ages. From Disney’s first attraction at sea, AquaMouse, to six different swimming pools and a specially designed Toy Story zone, Disney has pulled out all the stops for Disney Wish. Kids can enjoy a stellar Kids Club on Disney Wish, giving them the chance to meet their Disney favorites and enjoy a wide range of fun activities.

For adults, there are a series of subtly decorated Disney bars and restaurants to enjoy, including the Star Wars-themed Hyperspace Lounge and the Cinderella-esque Nightingale’s piano bar – though there are also several regular joints to enjoy when it all gets a bit too much. Quiet Cove is an adult-only district, complete with an infinity pool, bar, and cafe, providing the perfect place to slink away and enjoy being at sea.

The ship’s maiden voyage from Florida is scheduled July 14th, and will include a water salute to mark the occasion. Following that, it will leave for regular three and four-night sailings through to Nassau, The Bahamas, and Disney’s own island, Castaway Cay. With flight and hot prices reaching record highs, cruises are a top alternative for travelers – and the Disney Wish will be hard to beat.

New Cruise Ship Celebrity Beyond Launching This Month

Cruise industry giant Celebrity Cruises is set to launch the newest addition to its fleet, the Celebrity Beyond. Later this month, the Beyond will set sail on the first of several different itineraries that have been programmed for the next few years. Beyond will become the third Edge-class cruise ship in Celebrity’s fleet, joining Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex, with a fourth expected late next year.

The launch of the new ship is set to be a moment to celebrate for Celebrity Cruises and cruise enthusiasts alike, serving as a source of good news at the end of what has been a period of turbulence and uncertainty for the industry as a whole.

Here’s a closer look at Celebrity Beyond, including what features guests can look forward to onboard, what makes the new cruise ship stand out, and where it will be sailing first.

Celebrity Beyond Launching – What Travelers Should Know

Following its initial order back in 2016 and the beginning of its construction in November of last year, Celebrity Beyond is now finally ready to get out on the open seas later this month. The Edge class cruise ship was formally accepted into the Celebrity fleet during the week after delivery from the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard, in a celebration that saw the new ship’s 1,400-strong crew and its captain, Kate McCue, welcome it into the family.

Beyond may be the latest Edge class ship, but it is the longest, coming in at 20 meters longer than the first two ships in the class with its length of 327m and width of 39m. The Beyond uses all of its space, boasting a double occupancy figure of 3,260, with 1,646 cabins spread across its 16 decks. As well as having plenty of luxury private spaces for guests to enjoy, the new ship also has the same type of high-quality shared spaces, services, and amenities on board that have helped to put Celebrity on the map.

Expertly crafted by engineers and architects, Beyond offers guests a taste of innovation and luxury at every corner. From its top-class lounging and first-class offerings at the ship’s Retreat area to its Michelin-inspired menus, luxury retail offerings, and stellar onboard entertainment choices, Celebrity is set to live up to its name and offer all of its guests the star treatment and red carpet treatment they signed up for.

Lisa Lutoff-Perlo – the CEO and President of Celebrity Cruises – praised the new ship’s design, and claimed it fit in with the type of experiences that travelers were looking for in 2022. “With its innovative offerings that reach far beyond expectations from some of today’s most talented designers, artists and creative minds, we believe that Beyond speaks to the growing trend of people seeking new luxury experiences that are personalized, effortless and meaningful.”

Lutoff-Perlo also addressed the growing demand for travel, adding:

“We are seeing a continued desire to travel as business steadily increases, and we see Beyond leading the cruise industry into the next era of luxury. We are more than ready to welcome our guests onboard and show them just how incredible this ship is!”

Beyond will kick things off with its inaugural 10-night tour of Western Europe from April 27th, where it will depart from Southampton, UKK, visiting Bordeaux, France; Lisbon, Portugal; and Seville, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, and Barcelona, Spain. The Beyond will continue to go on several European tours until October, when it will embark upon a series of tours of the Caribbean.
