According to PortugalResident U.S. attendees at the most recent ‘Living in Portugal’ show were keen to learn more about living in the country, as well as Portugal’s popular digital nomad scheme.

But where do they want to live when they arrive?

The answer is The Algarve.

49.9% of show visitors wanted information on this region over all other parts of Portugal.

High Quality Of Life

There are many affordable small villages in the Algarve that are welcoming digital nomads with open arms thanks to the boost that they give to local economies.

The Algarve is a particularly attractive location for adventurers who want a relaxed, laid-back lifestyle and want to spend time on the beach or in the great outdoors.

Idyllic Beaches And Great Beach Weather

If you feel happier when you’re relaxing in the sunshine then you’ll love living in the Algarve.

That’s because temperatures in the Algarve are much warmer than in the rest of Portugal.

A combination of hot, dry summers and mild winters make this the perfect spot for beach lovers.

And when it comes to beaches, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

The Algarve is huge. It covers an area of 4,997 km2 (1,929 sq mi), and its coastline is roughly 155 km long. This means that its beaches are incredibly diverse.

Some of the very best beaches in the area include Praia da Salema in Salema, which is located in the Costa Vincentina Natural Park.

This is an idyllic and authentic Portuguese fishing village, and the beach is fringed by limestone cliffs.

If you enjoy surfing, then you should head to the famous waves of Ericeira, which attract adrenaline junkie locals as well as digital nomads.

For a classic stretch of golden sand, the Blue Flag Beach of Alvor is a great option. This beach spot is popular with families, kite surfers, and easily accessible too.

Boring but essential, a key factor for digital nomads is how good the digital infrastructure is in their chosen location.

And the Algarve boasts an incredibly robust digital infrastructure as well as a great safety record.

You’ll find reliable high speed internet connections here and the number of shared workspaces specifically for digital nomads is growing steadily.

You’ll also find networking events, workshops, and meetups hosted throughout the region to ensure digital nomads have the chance to meet likeminded world explorers.

Whether you want to work from the comfort of your own apartment, from a desk in a shared workspace, or even take in the views from a beachfront cafe, digital nomads really are spoiled for choice in the Algarve.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Algarve is considered one of the safest regions in Portugal.

Digital nomads are often cautioned to remain cautious of pickpockets, particularly if they’re exploring the more touristy areas of the region, but outside of this, there are very few safety concerns to consider when living in the Algarve.

A Gateway To The Greek Islands

Athens is incredible but it is also a noisy, busy city with very little green space.

For this reason many travelers choose to use Athens as a stopover on route to a more relaxing vacation on one of the many Greek islands.

If you land in Athens, you could fly straight back to your preferred island. But most people choose to spend a few days exploring the city and then travel to the Greek islands by ferry. This tends to be not only cheaper but also a more picturesque way to travel.

Easy To Reach

This year, there are more non-stop flights from the U.S. to Greece than ever.

Delta and American Airlines are offering non-stop flights from New York JFK.

If your starting point is Boston then you can take a daily flight with Delta. This is the fastest possible non-stop route between Greece and the U.S.

You can fly between Chicago or Philadelphia and Greece with American Airlines.

United Airlines offers a non-stop route from Washington. And if you want to head out from Atlanta then Delta is the airline for you.

All of these flights have Athens as their arrival city, which is a great place to start your Greek adventures. And from there it’s easy to reach almost any of the most beautiful Greek islands by jumping on a short flight or taking a passenger ferry.

A huge number of Greek island cruises from Athens depart from the port of Piraeus in the city too, so this is a great place to start if you want to hop from island to island and see as much as possible in your trip.

It’s also worth noting that U.S. travelers don’t need a visa to travel to Greece, which makes visiting the country even more straightforward.

A Rich Cultural Heritage

Cultural and historical destinations are always popular with American travelers. Greek is said to be the first and, therefore, oldest civilization in Europe.

Many important ancient attractions in the country are remarkably well-preserved thanks to its dry, Mediterranean climate, which means there is an abundance of things to see and do for culture vultures.

Despite facing competition from Europe and the Global South, often deemed the world’s main tourist playgrounds, the Middle East is surging in popularity among travelers right now, with a growing number of them picking the sunny spot for their vacations instead.

Though the likes of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar are often listed as the region’s main tourist destinations, it’s two other countries that are leading booking trends now, having registered a significant increase in visitor numbers.

Why, then, are they so attracting so many foreigners, especially Westerners?

Turkiye And Egypt Are The New Middle Eastern Faves

According to UK-based travel firm On the Beach, specializing in sunny holiday packages, the countries of Turkiye, formerly known as Turkey, and Egypt are the most sought-after among their customers, with more than double the number of bookings they received in 2019.

As the travel experts have highlighted, this is partly attributed to the weakness of the Turkish lira, Turkiye’s national currency, and the Egyptian pound, Egypt’s. In the last five years, the severely depreciated Turkish currency declined in value by more than 80 percent against the dollar.

In 2018, one US dollar equalled 4.5 liras, while today it buys as many as 23 liras, owing it to Turkiye’s unorthodox economic policies.

Similarly, the Egyptian pound is going through a rough patch, ranking among the worst-performing currencies this year.

Though inflation must be taken into account, there’s no denying the decline in strength has boosted not only exports but holiday bookings.

After all, crisis-stricken Westerners, particularly Americans, now strongly favor cheaper destinations where their tourist dollar stretches further.

How Affordable Are Turkiye And Egypt?

Holidaying in Bodrum, one of the leading resort cities in Turkiye, as well as one of the most affordable in 2023, the average hotel price is a fairly reasonable $57 per night, with an even lower median price of only $51, as reported by BudgetYourTrip.

Consumer prices in Bodrum are also significantly lower than other Mediterranean destinations, with meals at mid-range restaurants being up to 60.2% cheaper than in Marbella, Spain, or 56.1% compared to Saint-Tropez’, in France’s hugely expensive Southern coast.

Egypt isn’t too far behind in terms of affordability:

Based on data collected from 121 hotels, the average hotel rate in Sharm el-Sheikh, perhaps the country’s most luxurious resort zone, stands at $84.

Granted, inexpensive dining and budget-friendly hotels are not the only reasons why these Middle Eastern gems are exploding in popularity right now.

What Else Do These Countries Have To Offer?

Turkiye and Egypt may be huge beach destinations boasting sandy beaches lapped by turquoise waters and vibrant city breaks, but their main appeal rests on their accumulated millennia of History and ancient treasures.

Prior to the existence of Turkiye as a country, the Anatolian Peninsula where it is located was home to some of the most important cities of Antiquity, such as Troy, Ephesus, where parts of the Bible were written, and Attaleia, a major trading port.

Attaleia – modern-day Antalya – is still jam-packed with historical landmarks, including Hadrian’s Gate, a 1st-century Roman city gate, and well-preserved city walls. These all coexist alongside a modern seafront resort’s bustling atmosphere, making Antalya a one-of-a-kind destination.

In Istanbul, the remnants of the all-too-powerful Roman Empire complement other late Byzantine and Ottoman-era structures, with city icons such as Hagia Sophia, formerly the largest Christian cathedral in ancient times, now turned into a mosque.

Turkiye is a nation of beautiful, impossible juxtapositions sure to keep History buffs entertained, more so than it is simply a trendy sunny hotspot for beachgoers, though it definitely excels at both categories.

Egypt is no different, and it certainly does not require an introduction, what with its world-renowned pyramids, with origins lost to time, primeval burial tombs and temples, and sprawling metropolises that sit atop long-forgotten civilizations.

The powerful duo is at the front of the Middle East’s tourist offer, and they could be challenging the UAE for the number one spot in the region.

Tourists Are Still Flocking To Hawaii Despite Soaring Prices – Here’s Why It’s More Popular Than Ever

The cost of travel has increased exponentially this year, influenced by the economic crisis and the pent-up demand resulting from two years of pandemic management. Interestingly, several destinations continued reporting record revenues: one of them is Hawaii, a place tourists continue flocking into despite soaring prices.

Hawaii’s latest visitor numbers are incredibly close to reaching pre-pandemic levels, proving the population’s perceived drop of buying power has not influenced the tropical state’s performance on the tourism front. In fact, it received nearly one million visitors in July only, securing the status of America’s favorite domestic beach destination.

Taking into account the volatile scenario and the financial hurdles facing a majority of travelers, why is the ultra-expensive Hawaii still so attractive?

Hawaii Outpaces Other U.S. Destinations In Tourism Recovery

In the pre-pandemic years, Hawaii used to attract more tourism revenue than the busy hotspots of Cambodia, Brazil and Costa Rica combined. While arrivals notably reached historic lows in the turbulent years of 2020 and 2021, judging by its latest numbers, which signal a 92.4 per cent recovery compared to 2019, the Aloha State is now reclaiming its prestige.

July’s figures account for the highest volume of visitors the islands have received since January 2020, when the virus erupted and tough measures were brought in to curb its dissemination, including the closure of external Hawaiian borders. In total, $1.94 billion in tourist dollars were spent last month, 14.3 percent more than July 2019.

While we do not have access to data confirming this, this could be a reflection of the rise in costs, especially flight tickets and hotels, seeing that a full tourism recovery has not been achieved yet. Nevertheless, more than 90% of Hawaii’s once-shunned tourists are back, and inflated fares do not seem to be a huge concern here.

In July, hotel prices in the U.S. reached another historical peak of $159.08 on average per night, according to STR, or 17.5 per cent more than July 2019. Some destinations were particularly affected, such as Miami, where a sharp 50 per cent increase was observed. Hawaii’s was lower at a more moderate 36.1 per cent – still, it was far above the national average.

This Is How Much A Hotel In Hawaii Will Cost You In 2022

When visiting Hawaii in general, mainland Americans can expect to pay roughly $413.57 nightly, though some individual islands, like Oahu, may offer cheaper rates (17.9 increase only). Additionally, Hawaiian authorities have increased the controversial tourist tax, now 39.3 per cent higher than it used to be in 2019.

These latest hikes, placing Hawaii on a list of destinations openly discouraging budget travelers from returning, have not had a detrimental effect on the state’s growing popularity. The government reports a hotel occupancy rate of 81.5 per cent, a negligible 3.8 points lower than pre-Covid 2019. On top of that, Hawaii is already fighting overtourism only five months after reopening.

To draw a comparison, occupancy rates for the whole of the U.S. were actually down to 69.6 per cent in July following a 70 per cent peak in June, its most successful month since early 2020 – even then, significantly lower than Hawaii’s 81.5 points. In simpler terms, the Pacific retreat is more popular than it ever was.

So yes, it’s true travel demand is at its peak, notwithstanding inflation, but why Hawaii specifically?

The Answer Lies With Hawaii’s Natural Assets And Diversity

As asserted in a study conducted by booking platform Hostelworld on current solo travel trends, 74% of respondents claimed their primary goal when traveling now that the darker days of Covid are past is ‘natural world experiences’. This is partly why Central America is experiencing a boom in tourism lately, alongside other sub-regions where nature exists in abundance.

There is no state like Hawaii in the whole of the United States: an archipelago of 137 volcanic islands spanning close to 1,500 miles, this Pacific treasure is home to some of the nation’s most beautiful, and naturally diverse ecoparks, as well as a few of the world’s top-rated beaches and outdoor activities.

All of the six main Hawaiian islands – Kauai, Oahu, Molojai, Lanai, Mahui and the eponymous Hawaii – have their own distinct vibe and offer visitors unique experiences, be it luxury all-inclusives, nature retreats, or just pure beach relaxation. Of course, Hawaii is famous for its shiny blue ocean and white-sand beaches, rivaling those of popular sunny breaks like Cancun and The Dominican Republic.

Furthermore, the Westernmost state has been recognized by CNN as a trendy fall destination, with writers mentioning the rich marine life found here, whale watching and other open sea attractions. Other travel experts have also listed it as the perfect ‘babymoon‘ destination, surfing capital of the world, an LGBTQ+ haven – especially Oahu – and countless other accolades and titles.

In sum, there is a Hawaii island for every traveler profile:

- Honeymooners
- Babymooners/families
- LGBTQ+ travelers of all ages
Having dropped all of its Covid restrictions, including mandatory mask wearing in public spaces, and rescinding travel rules applying to those coming from other U.S. destinations, the state is one of the most welcoming destinations in the Western World right now, making it even more appealing among restriction-wary Americans… even if that means they’ll be paying a higher price for one week in paradise.

This summer has seen a massive increase in travel demand as the world continues to shed Covid-era restrictions. As a result, airfares surged by more than 50% when demand was skyrocketing. Although there may be some reprieve for flight costs this fall, prices remain high, leaving some travelers wondering if it is even worth booking a trip. However, for those not locked in on any particular travel dates, there is a simple trick to find international fares for under $200. The tool used is likely familiar, but the method and feature used may not be. Using a feature of Google Flights and some helpful filters, travelers can find an international flight to many destinations at a price point that doesn’t break the bank.

Requirements
1. In order for this method to work, the number one requirement for travelers is flexibility, either with their intended destination, their trip dates, or both. Maximum flight savings will trend with maximum flexibility.
2. While not a set-in-stone requirement, traveling out of a larger airport hub will net the most savings. For example, international flights from New York City are almost always cheaper than those from smaller, less-connected airlines. If travelers live near a larger airport, it may be worth the drive to save on fares.
3. Time. Travelers will have to spend a bit more time researching with this method, but the savings can be worth it. In particular, it’s worth investigating what hidden fees may be lurking behind a cheap fare, such as extra baggage fees.
The Feature & Methods Used

The first step will be heading over to the Google Flights landing page. From here, rather than punching in destinations and dates, click on the “Explore” tab. From here, travelers can find flights and trip ideas that will fit their criteria and, hopefully, a great deal! As mentioned above, this method is most useful for travelers who either don’t have a particular destination in mind, don’t have specific travel dates in mind, or both. This article will outline best practices for each circumstance.

2. Put your departure city in & change the trip to “one way” to find the best deals.
3. The default search parameter for dates is a “Trip in the next months”. Completely flexible travelers can feel free to leave this setting untouched.

An example with the above parameters using New York City as the departure city and Europe as the region of interest lies above. As you can see, there are several European cities with fares that are less than $200, including Rome, Athens, Milan, Berlin, Lisbon, and London. Dragging the map over to the Caribbean and South America also yields favorable fares, with many closer to $100 than $200.

Travelers With Specific Dates Or Destinations

While travelers with less flexibility will not be able to find deals as good as those with complete flexibility, this method is still worth using to find savings. Depending on the criteria for the trip, travelers only need to change one setting in the search to match their needs.
- Specific Dates – For travelers with particular dates, click on the box that, by default, reads, “Trip in the next 6 months.” Click “Specific dates” and enter your departure date.
- Specific Destinations – For travelers with particular destinations, click the box that says “Where to?” and input your destination. The “Trip in the next 6 months” box should remain unchanged.
Travelers with specific dates and destinations are less likely to find fares for under $200, but it isn’t impossible. If no results show, prices and the number of stops may need to be adjusted to find the lowest pricing. Similarly, suppose there is a better-connected airport within driving distance. In that case, it may be worth checking to see what deals can be found by switching departure airports.

Final Tips

The Explore tab is a great way to find flight deals when you can be flexible with destinations or dates. A good rule of thumb is more flexibility means more savings. However, travelers can filter by month, specific dates, non-stop vs. multiple stops, continent, country, or city. A new and exciting place could be waiting that you’d never considered before, and this is a method to use to find it.
