Spring is a time when most travelers stay put and try to save for that long-awaited summer getaway, but if you’re looking to get the best bang for your buck on your upcoming vacation, the first thing you need to do is to rethink your schedule.

Visiting some of the world’s top beach destinations smack dab in the middle of summer is far from ideal since the timing guarantees that you’ll be dealing with sky-high prices and insufferable crowds.

That’s why Kayak’s “Best Time To Travel” tool, an algorithm based on the latest data surrounding destination prices, weather, and traveler numbers, suggests that several amazing warm destinations are best visited in the spring.

For example, if you’re thinking about going to Hawaii, Phuket, or Cartagena this summer, what you’re about to read might convince you to take that vacation a bit earlier than planned.

Hawaii

Those who want to keep their travel domestic this spring can’t go wrong with Hawaii, where the paradisic weather and movie-like beaches are bound to get you officially out of that wintery mindset.

These upcoming months, return tickets to Hawaii will start at just over $110, giving all travelers, no matter their budget, a chance to hike along the lush trails, snorkel on the crystal-clear waters, or simply lounge around the soft-sanded shores of the 50th state.

Hotel prices in Honolulu, Hawaii’s beating heart, will hover a little over $200 a night, and remember, most of these places are all-inclusive resorts where several meals are included in the upfront fee.

However, I do want to note that scheduling your trip a bit later on in spring might be a smart choice, at least if you want to avoid peak-season crowds.

According to Kayak’s data, December and March are the most popular months in the state, so those looking to enjoy a peaceful, relaxing experience will want to plan their trip in April or May instead.

And I’m not even getting into how dreamy the weather gets this time of year, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the mid-80s (24-29°C).

Phuket

Are you itching to go somewhere warm and remote this spring? Phuket might just be the place for you.

From March through May, the Thai gem offers everything you could wish for and more, from great prices to fantastic sightseeing opportunities.

Plane tickets to Phuket reach their annual low in March, when a round-trip will cost roughly $859.

In comparison, the same exact ticket would set you back $1322 if you were to schedule your trip in July, marking a remarkable $463 difference – money that would be much better spent toward fun experiences or better accommodation options.

While airfare to Phuket will be steep no matter the time of year, the good news is you can save quite a bit on accommodation instead.

Stays in the city during April and May have an average daily rate of $37, but depending on the neighborhood, it can go as low as $21 a night—that’s less than what most of us are paying for a fast-food meal!

Now that the holiday season has officially passed, you can explore the region’s gorgeous beaches and cultural attractions crowd-free while enjoying the sweet 82°F (28°C) weather.

Cartagena

While the Caribbean coast of Colombia offers the type of picture-perfect views that can be enjoyed all year long, April is hands-down the best month you can choose for your Cartagena getaway.

That’s when the winter crowds have subdued and local beaches enjoy what you’d consider the ideal sunbathing weather – with temperatures that range from 75°F to 88°F (24-31°C).

Value-seeking travelers will be delighted to learn that flight and accommodation prices are at their lowest, too – airfare will cost you around $195, while hotels and short-term rentals have daily rates that rarely go over $75.

So, if you’ve been dreaming about strolling through Cartagena’s cobbled streets, exploring its Old Town, and seeing the iconic Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, scheduling your visit this spring will guarantee that you get the best bang for your buck.

If you are on your own way or have already taken a trip to the beautiful beaches of Florida or Mexico this month, you couldn’t have timed your vacation better.

Travelers fork over huge amounts of money to visit the best beaches, but sometimes Mother Nature has other plans.

Hurricanes or untimely rain are one thing, but icky, smelly sargassum can ruin the whole vibe of a picture-perfect sunny beach getaway.

Bits of seaweed are bound to wash up from time to time, but sargassum is an unsightly brown seaweed that tends to be more like an aquatic invasion.

For those planning on heading to Florida or Mexico, experts from the University of South Florida (USF) have been monitoring the sargassum blooms and providing reports each month.

Popular Beaches Affected This Spring

Whether you’re packing a passport or not, some of the most popular beaches this spring are expected to see brown goop wash ashore.

Spring Breakers, in particular, always seem to have Florida and Mexico at the top of the list and that’s exactly where tourists are being warned about.

As the giant blobs of sargassum make their way to land through the Caribbean, travelers still have time to alter their plans or, at the very least, change their expectations.

Florida is expected to be directly impacted by April, according to USF. Although, southwest Florida, including the Keys, may not see sizable amounts until late April or May.

Cancun, for example, has already been hit earlier than expected.

Mexico’s top beach destination has some of the most out-of-this-world blue waters imaginable, and it is close to the States.

Given it’s the most popular international vacation spot for Americans to visit, many will surely be disappointed with the eyesore of sargassum ruining their ocean views.

Even though beaches are being impacted, sargassum is no stranger to Mexico’s shores; Tulum and Playa del Carmen are always affected, too.

The Good News

This isn’t the first rodeo for these destinations. When spring arrives, somebody somewhere across major beach destinations is preparing for worst-case sargassum scenarios.

As these vacation spots thrive on tourism, it’s not like they want to deal with the bad press of ugly, stinky beaches.

While there doesn’t seem to be a bulletproof solution, there are some strategies being implemented, including the installation of barriers and cleanup crews.

Even the Mexican Navy is getting involved to better protect beaches to give tourists the best possible vacation experience.

Sargassum arriving on popular beaches is inevitable, but the good news is substantially less is expected to arrive this spring than previous years.

Experts Continue To Monitor Sargassum Movement

Each destination handles sargassum invasions their own way, but experts will continue to monitor its movement across the ocean and update accordingly.

Until then, it’s wise to check the latest reports on whichever destination you’re planning a beach trip to and temper expectations just in case.

Mother Nature is undefeated, after all. For now, the biggest blooms seem to be expanding through the East Atlantic and Caribbean Sea, which just so happens to have some incredible beaches in its path.

USF has issued some very insightful reports, but the March bulletin has not yet been issued.

What About The Gulf?

Florida may be super popular but the U.S. is home to some awesome beach getaways, including Florida’s neighbor Alabama, which is surging in popularity already.

The latest reports show minuscule amounts of sargassum in the Gulf of Mexico, where there are many beach vacation destinations to choose from.

Of course, there is no guarantee, but this region may serve as a great alternative beach spot. With some highly underrated and super cheap beach getaways, sargassum-free vacations are not hard to find with just a little digging.

As for Mexico, Los Cabos is one of the most popular beach destinations for Americans and not at risk of seeing sargassum given its prime location on the southern tip of Baja.

There’s No Cheapest Time To Fly To Puerto Vallarta

You don’t have to consider yourself a budget-conscious traveler to appreciate a good deal – and that’s exactly what you’ll get if you schedule your Puerto Vallarta trip this spring.

According to Skyscanner, March is the cheapest time to fly from the U.S. to Puerto Vallarta, followed by May and April, in that order.

Return tickets booked during these months start at $225, which is roughly $100 less than what you’d pay during peak season (right around the winter holidays).

Hotels and short-term rentals in the city are pretty reasonably priced this time of year, too.

The average daily rate hovers around $140, but some stays can go for as low as $72.

While not dirt cheap, this is still pretty good, considering you’re planning a dreamy beach vacation in Mexico.

The Weather Is Impeccable

Low prices aren’t enough to convince even the stingiest travelers, especially when that means going during a time of dreadful weather.

Luckily, that couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to visiting Puerto Vallarta in spring.

In these upcoming months, the climate in the city will be impeccable – sunny, dry, and with temperatures that hover around the comfortable mid-70s to mid-80s.

Remember, though, that the gentle sea breeze that keeps you from overheating throughout the day can get a bit chilly at night, so bringing a shawl or light jacket along for those late-night seaside strolls is always a good idea.

Explore The Wonders Of Puerto Vallarta Crowd-Free

If you’re anything like me, even a visit to the most stunning destination on Earth will end up feeling stressful if you’re surrounded by hundreds of other people invading your personal space every step you take.

That’s why timing your Puerto Vallarta visit to coincide with the later spring months can end up being the best decision you can make for that quiet, crowd-free experience you’ve been seeking.

In this case, however, March is out of the question since it’s one of the most popular months of the year to visit the Mexican hub (along with December).

Hyatt Regency Mexico City is currently offering rooms for 20% less than its normal rate, St. Regis has discounted its prices by 37%, whereas those who want to go all out and stay at the Ritz-Carlton will be happy to learn that their $905-a-night rooms are currently being listed at just $489, marking a whopping 41% discount.

You don’t need me telling you how balmy Mexico is, but unfortunately, there can be such a thing as too warm, and if you want to avoid the sweltering summer heat, booking your trip now could be the best decision you make.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Visiting this lesser-known national park is a unique experience.

Located 200 miles south of Denver, spring is the best time to visit this national park before the weather becomes uncomfortably hot.

Hot Springs National Park

If chasing the rare eclipse totality is a priority for you, this underrated national park is a great spring destination.

One of only 2 national parks that will experience totality this year, you can watch the eclipse from Hot Springs on April 8th.

The charmed surrounding town of Hot Springs, Arkansas will be hosting all kinds of eclipse festivities including music festivals and vendor booths.

Spring is also the perfect time to enjoy soaking in the glorious hot springs while daytime temperatures are still cool.

Joshua Tree National Park

If you want more solitude and fewer selfie sticks, spring is the time to visit this wildly popular park.

Yellowstone is home to the greatest wildlife density in the lower 48 states, and visiting in April is a magical time to see baby animals.

Young bison nurse at their mothers’ sides, bear cubs crawl out of their dens, and wolf packs play with their young during this special time of year.

Death Valley

This national park lives up to its name as its 120 degree daytime highs can be dangerous in the summertime.

Death Valley’s landscape is fascinating and varied–you can check out the lowest point in the North America (Bad Water Basin), or look out over rolling hills and geological formations.

Vacation rental marketplace Home2Go just released its annual Beach Index.

Using search data, this index was compiled by prioritizing the destinations with the best weather, the least searches on Google for “spring travel” (hello less crowds), and affordable accommodation prices.

We present to you the five most underrated beach destinations in the U.S.:

Sombrero Beach, Marathon, Florida

While Florida may be one of the most popular spots for Americans on holiday, there are still some places here that feel like a secret.

Sombrero Beach in Marathon, a small island community between Key Largo and Key West, is one of these hidden treasures.

This stretch of paradise is a place that attracts mostly Floridians, and you’re likely to have more breathing room to replenish with its natural beauty.

Boasting clear turquoise waters and powdery soft sand, this beach is one of the best in the Keys.

Outside of playing in the ocean, Marathon has plenty to offer visitors, including The Turtle Hospital and Dolphin Research Center–both of which offer tours.

Adventure lovers will find excellent diving and snorkeling opportunities among the reefs, and Marathon Beach is also well known for its world-class fishing.

Boca Chica Beach, Boca Chica Village, Texas

When we start talking about Texas, your mind may go to rodeos and trendy Austin, but this mega-state is home to some pretty incredible beaches as well.

If you’re like me and crave long, desolate stretches of sand and shore over the beaches commercialized with resorts and bars, then Boca Chica Beach is the place for you.

You won’t find restaurants, hotels, or even restroom facilities here, only miles of pristine nature and emerald waters.

This is the perfect place to escape civilization and recharge in nature.

Boca Chica Beach has excellent birdwatching, mangrove orchards, and if you’re lucky you’l even spot some turtles nesting during the spring and summer months.

It also happens that this area is home to Elon Musk’s SpaceX Center; if you’re looking for a unique activity, you can head over and check out the rockets for yourself.

While I did not find an exact official date yet, there is predicted to be another launch in March of 2024!

Saint George Island State Park, Saint George Florida

Located on a barrier island off of Florida’s “forgotten coast”, you’ll find peaceful stretches of empty sand and waves here instead of high rises.

Saint George Island remains relatively undeveloped despite consistently being rated as one of the best beaches in America.

This park has a classically beautiful beach, fishing opportunities, and top-notch places to snorkel and scuba dive.

Once the sun goes down, you can take advantage of the dark sky here and stargaze by the ocean.

St George Island is a quaint island town with a laid-back atmosphere and plentiful restaurants with great fresh seafood options to try.

Surfside Beach, Surfside Texas

Located just an hour outside of Houston, this quiet beach town is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Surfside Beach has warm water from the Gulf of Mexico and plenty of waves to play in.

In fact, this lesser-known spot is one of the best places for surfing in Texas.

This sleepy Texas town lacks commercial hotels, and is best defined by its colorful beach houses available to rent from locals on Vrbo or Airbnb.

Gulf Shores Beach, Gulf Shores Alabama

When it comes to dreamy travel destinations in the U.S., Alabama may not have been a state that you thought had much to offer.

But Gulf Shores Alabama will pleasantly surprise you–with miles of sugary white beaches, award winning restaurants, and plenty to do, this Southern gem may just be your new favorite escape.

While the town’s highlight is definitely its glittering coastline, you can also explore the Civil War era Fort Morgan, take a dolphin spotting cruise, or spend the day fishing.

As the ground finally starts to thaw, travelers are starting to plan their long-awaited spring getaways, and a good chunk of them are thinking about making the long, overseas trip to Europe, where the allure of attraction-filled cities remains as strong as ever.

At least that’s what the newest European Travel Commission Long-Haul Travel Barometer revealed.

The aim of the report was not only to discover how people are currently feeling about overseas travel but also to shed some light on the most popular international destinations of spring 2024.

According to ETC’s meticulously curated polls, these 10 European countries stood out as the most popular hotspots among American travelers.

1. France

It seems like the most visited country on Earth still has travelers in a chokehold, drawing in millions of people through its famous cultural scene and even better-known attractions.

Chances are that if you’ve been dreaming about traveling the world for some time now, France has already made its way onto your bucket list – and millions of lucky Americans are crossing it off of theirs this spring.

Of the U.S. citizens planning to go to Europe these upcoming months, a whopping 35% have chosen France as their destination, which is nothing short of remarkable.

So, take this as a sign that you, too, can fulfill your dreams of seeing Paris from the Eiffel Tower, lounging on the soft-sanded beaches of Nice, or enjoying a glass of wine in the vineyards Bordeaux.

2. Italy

The gorgeous Mediterranean country fell just one percentage point short of beating France to the no. 1 spot, which goes to show just how popular Italy has gotten this last year – and for good reason.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a destination as gorgeous, charming, and stunningly diverse, not only in Europe but the entire world.

Think about it – where else can you find something that compares to the historic ruins of Rome, the artsy streets of Florence, the rolling hills of Tuscany, the fairytale-like beaches of Capri, or the breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast?

3. UK

While miles away from your typical Mediterranean hotspot, what the UK lacks in beachy charm, it more than makes up for in culture, history, and lively city scene.

In a surprising turn of events, the fourth and fifth spot in today’s ranking will be shared among four different countries.

I know this might seem a bit weird, but considering how much Americans are traveling to Europe and how many destinations they’re eager to explore, the fact that there’s stiff competition between these hubs should come as no surprise.

This time, at least, those who know what they’re looking for in their next vacation have their choice already made for them.

If you’re looking to go somewhere warm, fun, and beachy, you can’t go wrong with one of the many dreamy hotspots that dot the Spanish coastline, whereas those who can’t stand the heat and would prefer somewhere cooler where they can take long sightseeing excursions will definitely enjoy Germany a bit more.

5. Austria & Greece

The fifth place is shared between Austria and Greece, two wildly different but equally fascinating countries.

A lot’s been said about Greece, its record-breaking year, and paradisic beaches these past few months, so chances are you already know what to expect from the iconic Mediterranean country.

However, for those of you seeking the ultimate Alpine experience, complete with historical wonders and outdoor activities, Austria might just be the better choice, not to mention that Vienna, the capital, is one of those cities that needs to be experienced at least once in a lifetime.

Rounding Up The Top 10

Since there were four countries occupying the fourth and fifth spots, there are only three destinations left to complete the top 10 ranking of the most popular European destinations this spring.

Ireland is the proud holder of the no. 6 spot, with over 10% of surveyed travelers planning to explore the Emerald Isle, followed by Portugal and Belgium, which enjoy a visitor share of 9% and 8%, respectively.

And from Galveston, you can take a 5-night cruise on Royal Caribbean that visits Cozumel and Costa Maya for just $504 per person in April 2024.

These deals were discovered on Cruise Critic, which is a great website for finding the cheapest cruises and comparing your options.

This makes a cruise to Mexico significantly more affordable than staying at a resort. And your cruise fare includes accommodations on the ship, all food, some drinks, and entertainment. (Alcoholic beverages, soda, WiFi, and shore excursions are typically extra.)

Plus, you get to visit multiple destinations in one trip, eliminating transportation costs.

There are lots of options out there for every type of traveler when it comes to cruises to Mexico.

Based on a survey of the most popular cruise lines, some fan favorites are Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, and Virgin Voyages.

7 Reasons Why You Should Not Visit Rome This Spring

Spring has long been considered the perfect time for a European city break – the weather is warm but not scalding, the streets have yet to be filled with kids getting the most out of their summer school break, and the views are to die for.

However, in an effort to get ahead of this year’s travel trends (and the chaotic spring crowds), I decided to visit Rome, one of the continent’s most fascinating hubs, before peak season even starts.

And even though this was a trip that made me fall in love with the city, its jaw-dropping sights, and most importantly, its people, it also proved one thing I’ve always known to be true – no matter how beautiful or attraction-filled a destination is, it’s not going to be for everyone.

In fact, as much as I enjoyed my time in the Italian capital (and am already planning to go back again), I also realized that there are at least 7 good reasons why someone planning to visit Rome this spring might need to reconsider their plans.

You’re Bound To Experience Delays

We’ve all heard of the jokes about Italians being chronically late or generally unbothered about schedules, and, as it turns out, there’s some merit to what I’d previously assumed were just stereotypes.

For the trip from the airport to the hotel, I had to take a bus and then a train – the former came 30 minutes late, while the latter experienced a 70-minute shutdown because of a blockage.

Now, the train delay might’ve just been a one-off thing, but when you combine all that with the fact that many cafes in major tourist hotspots opened their doors after 10:00 AM and even more of them took 3-4 hours long lunch breaks, you start to see where the stereotype comes from.

As someone who shares a similar go-with-the-flow mindset as Italians, I didn’t mind tweaking my schedule every once in a while, but if you’re someone who likes to follow a strict itinerary while traveling, Rome might not be the best choice for you.

Long Lines Almost Everywhere You Go

This one is a drawback for every major destination around the world, and Rome is no exception.

I visited the city in February, which is a couple of months before peak season starts, and I still had to make my way through suffocating crowds and wait for hours in line to enter St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City (which was hands-down the busiest attraction I saw).

Trams And Busses Are Pretty Dated

Those used to high-speed trains and state-of-the-art metro systems might find Rome’s public transportation system a bit lackluster.

Don’t get me wrong, there were plenty of options to get around, and metros and trains, in particular, were pretty modern and easy to navigate.

However, busses, and especially trams, were dated and not very well-maintained, which made getting around the city a bit more stressful than it needed to be.

Not The Best Place For Outdoor Adventures

Rome is a fascinating place with so much to see that you’ll need at least a full week to take in all of the attractions the city has to offer; however, if you’re someone who’s keen on adventure travel, you’re better off traveling to less curated parts of Italy.

Instead, Rome is a mecca for history buffs, architecture lovers, and foodies, so as long as you keep your priorities in mind, you’ll be good to go.

It Can Get A Bit Pricey

While Rome is hardly the most expensive place you can visit in Europe, it can still get quite pricey, especially if you don’t do enough due diligence beforehand.

For example, things like taking a taxi at the airport or buying tickets for each attraction separately can end up wasting you hundreds of dollars – and so can going to the first restaurant you see in major attractions (where the food is twice as expensive and half as good).

My main advice would be to research everything you plan on doing online, compare prices, check out reviews, and book everything you can beforehand so you’re less prone to overspending.

Not Your Typical Skyscraper-Filled City Skyline

When most people think of a city break, their mind immediately goes to that typical skyscraper-filled skyline, loud streets, and neon signs that fill every space you look at – that’s not the case with Rome.

Buildings in most major parts of the city rarely exceed 7 or 8 stories, and most of the buildings are pretty light-colored and monochrome, whereas billboards and advertisements are remarkably rare.

Partygoers Might Feel A Bit Bored

One of the things that surprised me the most about Rome was seeing just how quiet the city got after 11:00 PM.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s no shortage of great pubs and clubs in the city, but there just wasn’t a big nightlife scene – the Italian capital mainly caters to families, couples, and solo travelers looking to take in some of the world’s most stunning views during the day and recharge during the night.
